Brett Self begins his first year on the sidelines of the Belmont women's basketball program in 2012. Self comes to Belmont after a two-year stint at Wagner College. As a young, first time assistant, he served as recruiting coordinator, defensive coordinator and post development coach for two seasons. Prior to arriving at Wagner, Self worked as a graduate assistant at Auburn University during one of the most successful seasons in Auburn history, 2008-2009. During that time Auburn was the regular season SEC champion and coached by the SEC Coach of the Year, former Olympic head coach, Nell Fortner. The 08-09 Auburn Tiger team finished the season with a 30-4 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. “I am thrilled to have Coach Self join our family this season. He is energetic, exacting and eager to do anything that he can to help the growth of our program. Brett has a vast array of knowledge regarding the post position and skill development for all players. His competitive nature is contagious among the players and his ability to teach is very unique in someone his age,” Ezell said. “Brett is dedicated to our program and through that dedication, his grateful nature and humbleness have endeared him to everyone here at Belmont very quickly. I think we hit a home run with our new addition to the staff.” "I'm very excited to have the opportunity to become part of the Belmont family. I believe in the direction Coach Ezell is taking this program on and off the court,” Self said. “I have a great amount of respect for Coach Ezell. She is a proven winner as a player and a coach. There is a strong foundation already in place and I'm very fortunate to become a part of their winning vision. I'm looking forward to bringing my passion for the game to help accomplish great things here at Belmont." Self graduated from Auburn in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business/Marketing before earning his Master’s in Adult Education. He played four years at Hooper Academy, helping his team win the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Championship in 2004. Self was also a nominee for the Jimmy Hitchcock Top Christian Athlete Award. The Pintlala, Ala., native is the son of Darrell and Barbara Self. Darrell is a legendary high school head coach in the AISA Hall of Fame.
