HELPING HANDS

BELMONT 16S invest in Eco Future The benefits of solar power are obvious, making the decision to install a considerable solar panel asset to the Club last month an easy one. The June long weekend delivery of the panels took careful consideration and months of preparation, installation was also staged over several weeks with deliberate placement of the panels to be largely unseen from the road. The new 222 Reclaim Solar Energy panels system will feed a reasonably large percentage of the Club's daytime power load and will export very little back to the grid, meaning the Club will benefit 100% directly from the energy produced. This system is heavily supervised with remote back to base monitoring allowing for regular review of it's 25 year guaranteed performance.

3

Being commonly acknowledged as the single most effective step you can take towards reducing carbon emissions Belmont 16s CEO, Scott Williams says:

"The investment in a 100kw solar array on the auditorium roof is a solid stride towards improving our sustainability."

COMMODORE’S REPORT

River Wild

10 10

This year Club racing was back to normal across all classes, with the skiffs enjoying average weekly fleet sizes well into the mid 20’s. Saturday afternoon saw consistent numbers of Cherubs, while the Laser fleet was again very strong, all very encouraging signs. Will Howard, Richard Howard, and Corey Hamilton teamed up to claim the Lion Club Championship this year, sailing Contender Sailcloth. Tom Dawson, Joel Castle and Jamie Woods sailed East Coast Marine & Sail to victory in the Aristocrat Yearly Pointscore. Wonderful recognition for what was a very consistent performance this season, congratulations! On the representative stage Belmont crews performed strongly. River Wild sailed by Warwick Rooklyn, Tom Burton & Sam Phillips claimed victory in the Australian 16’ Skiff Titles, hosted by Gosford Sailing Club. NFPG sailed by Ben Bruniges, Justin Sharrock & Dave Hickey finished 2nd overall. The State Titles were hosted by both Port Hunter and Illawarra Yacht Club this season.

The Cherubs saw their National Championships abandoned due to COVID-19, however they did compete on a State level. Schmicky Shmootin sailed by Kris Fay and Tom Drury were 1st Overall NSW State Championships. At the club level, Cherub Club Champion this year was Schmicky Shmootin – Kris Fay & Tom Drury, while the Cherub Pointscore Winner was Gold Digger – Nicole Barnes & Brett Lancaster. In the Lasers our Club Champion this year was Hurley – Thomas Farley and the Yearly Pointscore Champion was No Hassles – Wayne Thomas. Continuing to the Laser radials – Peter Heywood on Kick was crowned Club Champion with Hornet– Sebastian Hornsby claiming the Yearly Pointscore Honours. As always, I congratulate our various Start Crews, Rescue Boat Crews, Radio Officers, and numerous Volunteers. Without these individuals giving so freely of their time, week in and week

out, our racing simply would not be possible. Thanks, must also go to our generous Sponsors, the Club, its Board of Directors, Management and Staff. We are all extremely fortunate to benefit from your support and assistance. Finally, I would like to thank our ViceCommodore Mat Waters, our Sailing Committee and Administration staff Nadine Steenson and Adam Gillson. Their advice and support throughout the year has been greatly appreciated, contributing strongly to another successful and enjoyable season. Please enjoy your evening as we celebrate the achievements of this season while also looking forward in anticipation to next year. Fingers crossed season 2021-2022, will be back to normal both on and off the water. Enjoy the winter break. James Griffiths Commodore

“Ignite the Apprentice Program Staff development is a constant focus at Belmont 16s. Our Ignite employee rewards program established nine years ago has created a high level customer service and a proactive team culture. The success of this program has recently placed an additional focus within our Kitchen Apprenticeship team. “The first few years of being introduced into the workforce can be daunting” says Human Resources Manager, Rachael Grant, adding “Knowing that as a tradesperson in those first few years Chefs can be undervalued, I wanted to shine a light on the fact that becoming a qualified Chef can present a world of opportunity to not only be creative and travel anywhere with this skillset, but that becoming a chef is a trade that has a valued place in so many different industries from Hospitality and Tourism to Journalism and Healthcare Sectors.“   Recognising this and working with our Apprentices, Rachael along with Executive Chef Tony Maher have created " The Apprenticeship Program", where an emphasis is placed on positive daily communications of expected behaviours, performance recognition as well as fostering constructive work place relationships, the aim of which is to ensure that they learn not only to qualify in their trade but to be able to move confidently towards becoming , highly employable, versatile and well respected Chefs in our Community.   In addition to the Apprentices' mentoring in and out of the kitchen, The Human Resources Department has been busy developing " The Ignite Feast Challenge", an inaugural internal competition of sorts where apprentices are given the freedom and scope to plan and then pull off a dining feast. This Ignite Feast Challenge will be held in August and be judged by a selection of Industry professionals.
