Youth Lacrosse Has Great Spring Season

The spring 2015 lacrosse season was a tremendous success for Bellingham Area Youth Lacrosse Organization (BAYLO). In its 3rd operating season, BAYLO was able to field 6 teams in the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League’s (MBYLL’s) Classic Division—2 teams each in the U9 and U11 divisions, as well as 1 team in each of the U13 and U15. Our teams played competitively against lacrosse programs that have been in existence for 10 years or more.

On Saturday, June 6, 2 players from each of the U11, U13 and U15 teams were recognized for their outstanding achievement and contribution to the MBYLL and the BAYLO by being asked to play in the North West Regional Recognition Game in Leominster.

Representing U11: Derek Pepin, Brady Pelletier Evan Paturzo, and Liam Keating; U13: Kyle Mastroianni and Ethan Stanley; and U15: Cade Linehan and Mic Flynn. In addition, BAYLO President Steve Linehan was recognized for his effort and work within BAYLO and

MBYLL, and was asked to coach the U15 All Star Team.

The BAYLO is already gearing up for another successful season in 2016 and looks forward to fielding our first girls lacrosse team. Any and all interested players can contact us at hawxlax@gmail.com or by visiting www.Bellinghamhawx.org.

The Bellingham Area Youth Lacrosse Organization strives to provide an environment that supports and practices positive coaching philosophies so that all players and families have a rewarding experience.

All BAYLO coaches are volunteers, focusing on player skills and game fundamentals. They work diligently during the season, and the off-season, to develop each athlete to the best of their potential. They are all encouraged to gain certification through the MBYLL coaching certification program. MBYLL is a non-competitive league, with no standings and no playoffs. BYBA Announces Registration

Online registration for the 2015-’16 season is now open. In-town and senior league for grades 3–12 is $110/pp; travel league for grades 4–8 is $210/pp; swish kids for grades 1–2 is $60/pp. The family max is $420. Please register now at www. bellinghamhoops.org.

BYBA will once again sponsor summer open courts at the middle school outdoor courts. Sessions will run on Tues. and Thurs., 6-8 pm, July 7– Aug. 20, and will be supervised by a BYBA board

member. The BYBA is happy to announce that a senior league will be available for grades 9–12.

Available for students who are not playing varsity basketball, the senior league will play on Sunday mornings at the middle school. We are hoping to accommodate both boys and girls, depending on the turnout. Registration is $100/pp; please register by Sept. 1 to ensure we have enough players.

Final Arts Week at Macy Elementary School Is Joyful and Sad

written by MARJORIE TURNER HOLLMAN, Contributing Writer Clara Macy Elementary School has been nurturing and educating Bellingham children since the 1960s and has been carrying on the tradition of “Arts Week” for the past thirty-two years. As the plans for closing the much-loved school have progressed, one of the biggest losses for many will be the tradition of Arts Week. There was another redistricting that took place in Bellingham around 1990 (my own children were transferred from South School to Macy School). Many at the time were dismayed and angry about the change, but I assured parents, “Macy has Arts Week.”

Now another transition is about to occur, and with the closing of Macy School comes the end of Arts Week. Or will it be the end? As my grandchildren enter the Bellingham School system, it is my hope that somehow this grand tradition will find a home, perhaps in both South and Stall Brook schools, so that all this town’s children can enjoy the benefits of Arts Week, in whatever form it might take in the coming years. As inspiration, here’s the story of this most recent—but I truly hope not last—Arts Week!

Arts Week began in the 1981-82 school year with an idea. Then-Macy-principal Annette Packard approached the staff about having an entire week set aside devoted to the arts. Carolyn Carey was on that original Arts Week committee, and returned as she has each year since retiring, offering dance and drama classes. “Originally we put everything aside for an entire week,” Carey related. “There was not all the testing that we have these days. We found five days was a bit much, so we moved the event to the week after Memorial Day to ensure it was four days, not five. It took some adjustment, working out the loss of planning periods and such.”

Maryann Donahue was also on the original Arts Week committee. Retired thirteen years, she has been back for every Arts Week since she retired, and once again taught music classes, along with Debbie Hoppe, who retired three years ago. “Arts Week is my favorite time of year,” Donahue smiled.

“I’m here all week!”

Hoppe nodded in agreement with Donahue and explained, “When all the school is focused on an idea, everything comes into focus—the kids internalize it.”

Anne Carey, a former Macy teacher who now teaches dance, yoga, stress reduction, and physical education at Lexington High School, took a personal day off to join her mother, Carolyn, to teach dance and drama to the children. “It’s been like alumni week here at Macy,” Anne said. “Many staff have been returning to visit.”

Carolyn Carey noted, “For many years we had a staff and teacher show and talent sharing. That all started with a child who was outstanding in her piano playing—we wanted to give her a chance to share so we came up with the talent show.”

In recent years the team leader and driving force

behind Arts Week has been the very personable Arts teacher at Macy and Stall Brook elementary schools, Maria Eydenberg. She in fact exemplified its spirit each year by devising her outfits during Arts Week so that they illustrated the theme of the week. The students knew she would do this and looked forward to seeing how she would be dressed each day. She made Arts Week an around-the-world adventure and a way of having the students enter into the many different cultures of our global community.

Despite sadness at the ending of this tradition, Arts Week continued in full swing. The week began with a parade, but this year the parade was also the opportunity for Donahue and Carolyn Carey to honor the current Arts Week committee for their work continuing the tradition. That afternoon the children from the 4th-grade chorus offered a concert for the entire school to enjoy. Throughout the week additional former students and retired teachers provided classes—Kim Harris taught Spanish songs and stories; Susan Penswick, Wendy Trudeau, Paula Richards, and Joanne Phillips offered stories and crafts; and Linda Baxter Lasco taught quilting.

Wednesday morning the Bamidele Dancers and drummers brought rhythms of West Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean to life. A number of children were invited up to use the instruments. Later, most of the teachers joined the group on stage and danced to the lively sounds of rhythm instruments that reflect the West African diaspora throughout the western world. The colorful costumes, call and response songs, the infectious rhythms kept the children’s attention throughout the program.

School superintendent Ed Fleury (his last year also) nodded as he watched the performance. “I love this. It’s one of the best programs I’ve seen for elementary age—it would be great for older kids too—the 5th and 6th graders.”

Arts teacher Maria Eydenberg continued her custom of dressing for the theme; in western garb, she is square-dancing with 2nd grader Eshaan Potnis. how to dance using some old, traditional group dances. Thursday and Friday evenings, families were invited to return to Macy school to enjoy square dancing. The Parkes are skilled teachers of contra and square dance in the Boston area and beyond. Their teaching was laced with humor and shared with clarity.

The middle school band returned to Macy for one more concert Friday morning, while Leland Faulkner created shadow art, combined with storytelling and magic, for the children Friday afternoon.

Principal Jaime Slaney explained, “This is a celebration of Macy School—Arts Week is dedicated to all kinds of arts, music, and dance. It’s what Macy School stands for. This is my 8th year at Macy; one of the questions I was asked when I was interviewed was, would I keep and support Arts Week. If we had a school motto, it would be ‘Whatever it takes.’ This whole process of leaving is tough, and we’re putting the kids first until the end.” She continued, “Each year we ‘clap out’ the 4th-graders at the end of the year—it was a tradition at one of my former schools. But this year, we’re doing it for the whole school. We plan to walk through the neighborhood on the last day of school to say goodbye.”

Hopefully, rather than being an end, the traditions of Macy School will continue and become part of the wider town’s school traditions. How this might happen will undoubtedly be distinctive in each school, but the lessons learned at Macy are worth sharing.

Library’s Highly Anticipated Summer Program Aims to Keep Kids Reading

The Bellingham Public Library ’s summer reading theme this year is “Every Hero Has a Story!” There are three ways to win prizes as part of this program: (1) Get a Bingo on Your Superhero Bingo Card; (2) Be a Hero in Your Community; (3) Be a Super Reader (for more details, visit http:// goo.gl/Uo2v0L).

• Super Hero Egg Drop—For all ages. Create a team comprising your family or some friends and make a superhero egg-drop creation for our competition on August 13. Please register in order to receive egg-drop rules and guidelines.

• Every Hero Has a Story Film Challenge—For families. You are hereby challenged to create a film that tells one of those heroes’ stories. How you tell the story is up to you, as long as it is under five minutes long. Every participant will receive a raffle ticket.

Please register in order to receive more information. Everyone’s films will premiere at our film festival on Monday evening, August 17.

• Animal Affair Petting Zoo—For

families. Thursday, July 2. Drop by between 1 and 3 pm to get up close with barnyard animals, Animal Affair is bringing their traveling petting zoo to the library. You will see chicks, goats, bunnies, ducklings, chickens, and piglets. No registration necessary.

• Fancy Nancy Super-Secret Surprise Party— For ages 4 & up. Thursday, July 9, 6:30 pm. We will read Fancy Nancy’s newest book, Super-Secret Surprise Party, and throw our own surprise party. But who is the party for? Come dressed in your best to find out—you won’t be disappointed. Please register.

• Villain Party—Recommended for children at least 4 years old. Thursday, July 16, 6:30 pm. Every hero has a story, but most of them wouldn’t without a villain. This nefarious program will celebrate some of the most contemptuous villains in pop culture. Vile costumes encouraged. Please register.

• Deborah Sampson: Farm Girl on the Front Lines— For ages 7 through adult. Tuesday, July 21, 6:30 pm. Deborah Sampson certainly qualifies as a hero—with a Bellingham connection

to boot. Portrayed by Janet Parnes of Royal Tea Parties by Lady J., Deborah takes the lead, as children and adults dive into the story of this patriot who lived a life of simplicity, yet prevailed as the only woman to serve as a soldier in the Revolutionary War without detection. Please register to attend this entertaining and educational program.

• Built-to-Win Challenge— For families with children ages 6 and up.

Thursday, July 23, 4 pm. This program is presented by the USS Constitution Museum. Is your family up for two heroic, historic challenges? To start, President George Washington needs your family to create one of the country’s first naval ships. Build your own model ship and put it through tests of strength and speed. Then, step into the role of the courageous crew who manned USS Constitution’s cannons in battle. Please register; space is limited.

• Super Night— For all ages. Friday, July 24, 6:30–8 pm. You won’t want to miss this program. Superhero appearances, obstacle course runs, super crafts, and lots more! There

will be something for everyone, from toddlers to teenagers, so bring the whole family.

Monday, July 27, 6:30 pm. Join Kathy Wotton of Artworks Studio for an evening of canvas painting. The cost for this program is $10 total for a parent and a child, due at registration. “Are You OK?”

The Are you OK? program provides safety and security for elderly people living alone. Every day of the year, an officer from the Norfolk County Sheriff ’s Office places a phone call to check on the well-being of people who have signed up for the program. If they fail to answer or indicate they need emergency aid, the officer summons help immediately. Sheriff Bellotti introduced the freeof-charge program into Norfolk County in 2001.

Since then, officers have registered over 70 saves by calling for help for seniors who suffered falls or a variety of other medical problems. Fallon Ambulance Service became a partner with Sheriff Bellotti in administering the program in 2009.

People interested in learning more about Are You OK? or signing up for the program should call the Norfolk County Sheriff ’s Office, toll-free, at 1-866900-7865 (RUOK).

The BWOT will take a break during July and August but are already thinking about the fall. We will be at the Pumpkin Stroll in October with the duck pond and of course Muffins with Santa and the annual Telethon for families in need.

These are just some of the BWOT activities. We would like you to join us as we continue to serve our community. We are open to men and women 18 years or older. We meet in the Police Department Youth Center, located behind the Dairy Queen, on the first Monday of the month at 7:30, September through June.
