Sahana is a recent immigrant and single mom living with extended family while she tries to get on her feet. She heard about Breaktime-Mealtime™ from another parent and asked the school how she could enroll her son. She told the Family Connections Center staff member that she really likes the extra support for winter break since they don’t have enough to eat without school meals. She also likes that she can make food that is familiar to her culture and makes her feel at home, even though she is in a new country.

After a fire ravaged Jen’s apartment building, she and her four children spent three months in transitional housing before finding a new apartment in Bellevue. However, the cost of moving had eaten up most of their limited budget and they had few personal possessions remaining. Jen was referred to Bellevue LifeSpring by a school counselor and received clothing vouchers to shop at Thrift Culture. “You don’t want to look like what you’re going through,” Jen said. Thanks to you, Jen and her kids were able to find clothing and shoes to replace some of the things they’d lost in the fire. “My kids don’t have to start school worried about if their clothes are going to be too small, too little, too this, too that,” Jen replied. “Everything matters on that first day of school.”

9

Katia and her siblings grew up supported by their single mother. In high school, their mother became ill and Katia’s stressful home life began to affect her academics. When she failed a class, she wasn’t sure how she could afford to get back on track. In her senior year, Katia was awarded a Grads-On-Track scholarship to recover credit with a summer school course. Thanks to your support, she passed the class and was able to graduate on time with her peers. Most recently, she received a college scholarship from Bellevue LifeSpring to attend Bellevue College and pursue a career in social work.

10

Lwin drove a taxi to support his family, taking as many hours as he could to keep up with bills. Their family was barely making ends meet when Lwin was in an accident caused by a drunk driver. He was unemployed for the next six months, trying to repair his car and working with a lawyer to get funds from the driver who hit him. Meanwhile, they fell behind on rent and were facing eviction. Thanks to your support, Bellevue LifeSpring was able to provide one month’s rent for Lwin, giving him the time to get back on his feet and back to work. He is now a driver for both Lyft and Uber Eats, working two jobs to make up for lost wages. His wife is also looking for work so they aren’t reliant on a single income and won’t face homelessness again.

Highlights A new home for our office and thrift store, a new look for Breaktime-Mealtime™ and new stories made possible with your support – here’s a look at some of the brightest moments and biggest events from the past year.

August

Grand Opening Bellevue LifeSpring and Thrift Culture celebrated a grand opening in their new home on the third floor of Bellevue Square. Thanks to the generosity of Kemper Freeman and the Kemper Freeman family, Bellevue LifeSpring was able to realize their goal of combining their administrative offices with Thrift Culture to create one collective, collaborative space. With room to grow, Bellevue LifeSpring will be better able to address the needs of Bellevue students and their families from one central location.

October

Uncork the Night The 14th annual wine tasting and auction raised more than $545,000 for Bellevue kids. The Fund-A-Need portion of the evening alone raised over $116,000 for Bellevue LifeSpring’s education programs, providing high school credit recovery and college scholarships to students living in poverty. Guests heard from Karissa, a college scholarship recipient and junior at the University of Washington: “You want to do the best you can and meet your own goals, but it can be really hard to focus on that when you don’t know how you can pay for school or books. Bellevue LifeSpring’s renewable scholarship has aided me tremendously in relieving my stress surrounding finances.”

December

Holiday Adopt-A-Family™ This heart-warming program matched 295 families with community sponsors who provided gifts and food to children for the holiday season. “Holiday Adopt-A-Family makes a big difference for our little family,” one recipient shared. “This last year was extremely hard for my son Taylor and me.” Recently homeless, single mother Sherry and threeyear-old Taylor looked forward to spending Christmas with a roof over their heads and, thanks to their sponsor, gifts under their tree. What was on Taylor’s wish list? His family’s sponsors received requests for a warm winter sweater (light blue), Spiderman blanket and a three-wheel scooter. With the support of over 100 volunteers and over 200 sponsors, Taylor and 714 other children truly had something to celebrate this year.

March

Step Up to the Plate The 19th annual benefit luncheon raised over $410,000 to support Bellevue students living in poverty. Guest speaker and Bellevue School District Superintendent Dr. Ivan Duran identified Bellevue LifeSpring as a standout community partner: “Bellevue LifeSpring is responsive to our changing demographics, specifically to the changing needs of our students and families.” Karen and Doug, grandparents with full-time custody of their three grandchildren, all with special needs, also shared their story. “The big picture of being involved in Bellevue LifeSpring is that the kids have a sense of community,” Karen said.

April

Breaktime-Mealtime™ For over 20 years, Breaktime-Mealtime™ has provided kids living in poverty with vital nutrition by providing boxes of non-perishable food and a small grocery store voucher. Without free and reduced-price meals at school, these students would go hungry during school breaks. In early 2018, Bellevue LifeSpring made the decision, with the support of the Bellevue School District, to replace the food boxes with an increased value grocery store voucher. These vouchers allow families to purchase items that fit their cultural, dietary and nutritional needs. Following this change, Breaktime-Mealtime served a record 1,836 students during spring break 2018.
