Tigers Open Playoffs at Jordan Saturday by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School baseball team completed what was a condensed regular season that included 17 games in 26 days. The Tigers finished the Minnesota River Conference campaign with a 7-7 record by splitting a doubleheader at Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday. Friday’s nonconference game at Faribault Academies was cancelled due to rain. Last week began with a 12-2 loss to Holy Family Catholic on Tuesday at Tiger Park. Totino-Grace was scheduled to make a rare appearance in Belle Plaine Tuesday after this edition of the Herald went to press. The game was added to the schedule last week as both teams wanted one more tune up before their respective postseasons get underway. The Tigers, who were 7-9 overall heading into Tuesday’s regular season finale, received the No. 6 seed for the Section 2AA, North Subsection Tournament and will travel to No. 3 seed Jordan (11-3) 1 p.m. this Saturday. The winner of that game will advance to take on the winner between No. 2 seed Glencoe-Silver Lake (12-2) and No. 7 Sibley East (8-8) at the home of the higher seed. The upper bracket of the North Subsection features defending state Class 2A champion and No. 1 seed Holy Family Catholic (113), which received a first-round bye. The Fire will play Tuesday’s victor between No. 4 seed Norwood Young America (9-6) and No. 5 Watertown-Mayer (9-6). The top seed in the South Subsection is Tri-City United, which finished 8-6 in the MRC. The Titans got a first-round bye and will play at home Thursday against the winner between No. 4 seed Maple River and No. 5 Le Sueur-Henderson. The lower bracket of the South Subsection Tuesday had No. 3 St. Peter at home against No. 6 New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva and No. 2 Faribault Academies host to No. 7 Waseca. Note: All tournament games after the first two rounds will be played in Belle Plaine June 1-6. HFC 12, Belle Plaine 2 You cannot commit seven errors and expect to beat a good team like defending state Class 2A champion Holy Family Catholic. Belle Plaine had that many errors and the final score showed it as the visitors won 12-2 last Tuesday at Tiger Park. The Fire scorched the Tigers early with four runs in the first inning, followed by one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to grab a 90 cushion. Belle Plaine’s only two runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gavin Dauwalter started on the mound and took some lumps, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four walks in two innings. Jack

Winders pitched the next four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk. Luke Narveson pitched the final inning and the defense failed him as he surrendered three unearned runs on one hit. “This was not one of our sharpest games as evidenced by our seven errors,” said Tigers coach Pat Schultz. “We were able to get everyone some work as we start the push for the playoffs.” Belle Plaine had just four hits, including a home run by Jayden Howie. Zach Juaire, Derek Dahlke and Colton Hentges had the other hits. Tigers 6, LS-H 5 The Tigers surrendered five unearned runs in the first inning but tied the game and took the lead with six runs in the third inning. Both teams went scoreless the final three innings as Belle Plaine held on for the 6-5 victory in the first of two games Thursday at LS-H. “We got off to a tough start but (starting pitcher) Jacob Meger did a great job of keeping us in the game and didn’t allow a runner past second the rest of the way,” Schultz said. The Tigers’ six-run outburst in the third inning was highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by Mitchell Nelson. “We did a nice job of coming back from the big early deficit and earning a victory,” Schultz said. Meger pitched all six innings for the Tigers, allowing seven hits and no earned runs. He walked one and struck out four. Nick Eliason had a team-high three hits and scored a run. Other offensive leaders for Belle Plaine were Howie (two hits and one RBI), Nelson (one hit and two RBI) and Dahlke (one hit and one RBI). LS-H 4, Tigers 2 The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but that’s where their offense ended as the Giants rallied for a 4-2 victory in Thursday’s nightcap. A double steal and a RBI single by Jordan Johnson led to the Tigers’ lone two runs. Belle Plaine had just two hits, the other coming from Nelson. LSH tied the game with two runs in the top of the second inning and took the lead with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings. “This was another frustrating game where we took an early lead but couldn’t hold it,” Schultz said. “Jordan Johnson threw another strong game for us but was again plagued by errors that led to three unearned runs. Our bats never got going and we seemed uncomfortable all night. We need to continue working on having a good approach and quality at-bats as we head into the playoffs.” Johnson tossed five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits. Eliason pitched the final inning and allowed no runs.

MRC Golf Tournaments Postponed Until Today The Minnesota River Conference boys’ and girls’ golf tournaments scheduled for this past Monday at Timber Creek Golf Course in Watertown were postponed until today (Wednesday) due wet grounds. There is also a change in location, from Timber Creek to Glencoe Country Club. Today’s rounds are scheduled

to get underway at 9 a.m. The Belle Plaine girls enter today with the season lead in the conference point standings, while the Tiger boys are fourth. The subsection tournament is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. next Tuesday at Le Sueur Country Club. The section tournament is set for June 3 at New Prague Golf Course.

Tigers Extend Win Streak to Eight by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School softball team completed the regular season on an eightgame winning streak when it swept Le Sueur-Henderson by scores of 2-0 and 7-5 Thursday at LS-H. Friday’s nonconference game at home against Glencoe-Silver Lake was cancelled due to rain. The Tigers, 10-4 in the Minnesota River Conference, 125 overall, were scheduled to host Jordan (10-9) in the first round of the Section 2AA, North Subsection Tournament Tuesday after this edition of the Herald went to press. The Tigers received the No. 4 seed in the tournament and Jordan No. 5. The winner will take on the winner between No. 1 seed Norwood Young America (15-2) and No. 8 Sibley East (3-13) 5 p.m. this Thursday at the home of highest seed. Tuesday’s losers will be eliminated from the tournament. The lower half of the North Subsection bracket Tuesday had LS-H (9-8) at home against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (105) and Holy Family Catholic (8-5) at home against GlencoeSilver Lake (5-9). The No. 1 seed in the South Subsection, Maple River (133), got a first-round bye and will host the winner between No. 5 seed Tri-City United and No. 4 St. Peter this Thursday. The Tigers beat Maple River 13-5 earlier this season. Tuesday’s other first-round games in the South Subsection had No. 3 seed New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva at home against No. 6 Faribault Academies and No. 2 Waseca playing host to No. 7 Blue Earth Area. Teams that win their first two playoff games will advance to the double-elimination rounds that begin this Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Complete brackets can be found on the MSHSL website. Tigers 2, LS-H 0 Maddie Studnicka pitched a complete-game shutout as the Tigers blanked the Giants 2-0. “We played our best defensive

game of the year,” said Belle Plaine coach Jeremy Kalal. “We did not commit a single error and made some very nice defensive plays to get us out of some innings. We got on top early and our pitching and defense shut them down and killed every threat they tried to mount. It was nice to see us dominate on all aspects of the game tonight.” Studnicka allowed five hits and three walks. She struck out four. The Tigers, who scored the game’s only two runs in the first inning, had just four hits – one apiece from Elizabeth Johnson, Claire Otto, Maddi Lark and Sophie Brazil. Johnson and Otto, the first two batters in the order, scored Belle Plaine’s runs. Tigers 7, LS-H 5 The Tigers rallied twice from multiple-run deficits to earn a sweep over the Giants with a 75 triumph. Belle Plaine fell behind 3-0 in the first inning before battling back to knot the score with a run in the second inning and two more in the fourth. LS-H regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Tigers came right back with four tallies in the bottom frame. “It was awesome to see these girls fight like they did. After going down for a second time, they rallied and put the game away with another four runs, all off of good pitching,” Kalal said. “I’ve never been more proud of a team . . . We’ve been playing some great ball as of late and we are hoping that we can keep this going into the playoffs.” The Tigers had 10 hits, led by Kaylee Hentges and Sam LeMay with three apiece. Hentges drove in three runs and LeMay one. Johnson, Studnicka, Lark and Maddie Haller had Belle Plaine’s other four hits. Studnicka pitched five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and 10 walks. Haller pitched the final two innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Belle Plaine’s Jamie Read (lane 5) and Jessica Weldon (lane 4) were the two front-runners in this preliminary heat of the 100meter dash at Arlington on Thursday. In the finals, Read placed third and Weldon fourth.

Belle Plaine Girls, Boys Defend Titles by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both successfully defended their titles at Thursday’s Minnesota River Conference Championships in Arlington. It is the ninth year in a row the Belle Plaine girls captured the crown and the second in a row for the boys. The Tigers will now set their sights on this Thursday when they travel to Le Sueur-Henderson High School for the subsection meet. The Section 2A Meet is scheduled for June 1 at Mankato West High School.

Girls’ MRC Results

When a team captures all four relays in a meet, it’s a pretty good indicator of who’s going to be roosting at the top of the team standings at the end of the competition. The Tigers did just that en route to compiling 198 team points, well ahead of secondplace Watertown-Mayer’s 116. Rounding out the field were Tri-City United (113), Jordan (70), Mayer Lutheran (62), Norwood Young America (53), Sibley East (50) and Le SueurHenderson (39). Winning relays for Belle Plaine were the 4x800 team of Janessa Meuleners, Emilyn Siemon, Haley Fogarty and Haley Leger (10:08.01); the 4x200 group of Amara Meyer, Jenna Gatz, Jamie Read and Anna Donkhong (1:49.56); the 4x100 squad of

Stender Helps Lead Central College to NCAA Finals Freshman pitcher Kelsey Stender of Belle Plaine played a big role with the Central College (Iowa) softball team this season, helping lead the team to the NCAA Division III championship finals in Eau Claire, Wis. this past weekend. The No. 16-ranked Dutch (3210) captured the eight-team Pella Regional title the previous week, defeating No. 8 St. Thomas (Minn.) 2-1 in the finale. Central College dropped both its games in the Division III championships – 4-1 to No. 3 Montclair State (N.J.) and 54 to No. 5 Texas-Tyler in eight innings .

Stender appeared in three of the team’s four regional tournament games, allowing just one hit and no runs over 7.2 innings. She walked one batter and struck out seven. Statistics from this past weekend’s action were not available. For the season, Stender was 10-4 with a team-best 1.26 earned-run-average heading into the NCAA finals. She had walked 21 batters and struck out 80. Central was making its 25th NCAA Division III tournament appearance and 13th in the finals. The Dutch claimed national championships in 1988, 1991, 1993 and 2003.
