Town Tigers (continued from page 15)

Jordan 11, Tigers 1 The Tigertown Express travelled north on Highway 169 for a Father’s Day match up with the Jordan Brewers. Another day of threatening rain, and rain it would – rain runs. Not much to say, except that the Brewers would do something this writer has never seen, when they had TEN straight singles in the fourth, leading to nine runs. Another thing this writer has never seen was when it was raining and there seemed to be no clouds in the sky for the rain to be coming from. Some Tigers ventured to believe it was tears from the Lord for having to

watch the ugly affair of a game. Team Tigertown had six hits, with no Tiger having more than one. Larson led the sixth off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Trevor Latzke. A Dan Huber sac fly plated Latzke, helping the locals avoid a shutout. Note: Check out the fancy new widget Twitter has come up with (or, visit www.twitter.com/bptigertown). After years as a group on Facebook, the Tigers have a new page on the social media giant that you can ‘Like’ (whether you really do or not) at www.facebook.com/bptigertown.

Training

(continued from page 1) Armed with training Airsoft guns that used C02 to shoot nonlethal rounds, the role-playing included searching for the shooter, pursuit of an active shooter, cornering the shooter and securing the shooter after he was shot and apprehended. “It was a jam-packed three days,” Stolee said. The training included efforts to de-escalate a situation and negotiate when possible and shoot when necessary. “We trained with multiple scenarios, not just the same thing over and over again.” The training was arranged shortly after Lt. David Grossman (U.S. Army retired) visited Belle Plaine and Jordan in January to speak with staff from the two schools plus Belle Plaine and area police on building security in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shootings in December. Superintendent Kelly Smith said the district was happy to host the training since the buildings are free of students and relatively unused now that school is out for the summer. He said the department’s training was “kind of a natural next progression of what should happen” after Grossman’s visit last winter. Since Grossman’s visit, the Belle Plaine School District has implemented an array of security upgrades that include check-in points at school front offices and Internet-based security cameras inside the high school. Last week’s training was provided by the National As-

sociation of School Resource Officers. Stolee said the opportunity to host the training is worthwhile, even if the risk of an active shooter in Belle Plaine School is low. The school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in affluent Newtown, Conn. and reports of a school shooter at New Prague Middle School in March, though a hoax, are reminders that school violence can occur where it is least expected. “I don’t gamble. I don’t play the odds,” Stolee said. “I’m not going to say it won’t happen here.”

Tourney Champs The Belle Plaine 15-year-old traveling baseball team hosted the 15AA Tigers Classic this weekend at Tiger Park and won the tournament. Pictured back row, from left, are coach Dan Giesen, Aiden Ladd, Josh Juaire, Mitchel Stier, Nathan Herman, Danny McCann, Luke Siemon and assistant coach Johnny Millyer. In the front row are assistant coach Jason Ladd, Jon Vinkemeier, Andrew Carey, Marcus Giesen, Wally Schultz, Wes Sarsland and Henry Pesch. Not pictured is Aaron Mancini.

B.P.’s Top Shooters Finish Among Minnesota’s Best at State Meet Belle Plaine seniors Luke Bristlin and Luke Zilverberg finished among the state’s best clay target varsity shooters at the Minnesota State Clay Target League’s state shoot-off in Alexandria. Bristin finished in a tie for sixth with 13 other shooters, hitting 96 out of 100 targets. Zilverberg finished in a 20-shooter tie for seventh. He hit 95 out of 100 targets at the competition. The state’s top shooter, Hasting’s Brendan McCabe hit 98 out of 100 targets. Josiah Barringer finished 20th. He hit 82 out of 100 targets. As a team, the Belle Plaine varsity finished 59th. At the junior varsity shoot-off, Belle Plaine’s Luke Lunow finished among 11 shooters who tied for eighth place. He hit 91 out of 100 targets. Belle Plaine’s Wyatt Herrmann finished 23rd with 29 other shooters. He hit 76 out of 100 targets. BPHS’s Sam Karl and Joshua Mosbeck finished among 25 shooters who tied for 24th, hitting 75 out of 100 targets. Other Belle Plaine junior varsity shooters included Duane Good and Brandon Heitz. Carver County and Alta Investments, LLC, closed on the purchase for the last remaining parcel within the Lake Waconia Regional Park boundary. The 19.29 acre parcel preserves 890 feet of shoreline for conservation and public use. “The purchase marks the end of planned land acquisitions for the Lake Waconia Regional Park,” said Carver County Board Chair Tim Lynch. “Since 1975, Carver County has planned for a Regional Park to preserve a portion of Lake Waconia for conservation and public use.” There are many benefits to acquiring the park property. The purchase is a big step for towards the resolution of Old Beach Lane and will allow for a trail connecting the city to the park. The 40-foot tall hillside provides a natural landscape to allow for a secluded atmosphere in the park while buffering noise. In addition, the purchase will allow the park to realize future

Wright County Conference Accepts New Prague’s Bid for Membership New Prague High School appears to have found a conference home for its co-curricular athletic teams for the 2014-15 school year. The Wright County Conference recently voted to accept the Trojans, a move the New Prague Area School Board is expected to accept Monday (June 24). Hutchinson, which like New Prague, was a member of the Missota Conference before it left for the WCC, cast the only no vote of the 11 teams voting. The WCC is proposed to have two divisions – one for its large schools and the other for smaller schools. Based on current enrollment, New Prague will be the largest of the large schools with 1,123 students. The other large schools include Waconia (1,035), Orono (909), Hutchin-

son (797), Delano (724) and Holy Family (507), the Mew Prague Times recently reported. The small school division is proposed to include Mound Westonka (617), Dassel-Cokato (586), Glencoe-Silver Lake (507), Litchfield (486), Annandale (464) and New LondonSpicer (390). The Missota Conference decided to disband at the end of the coming school year after four member schools – Shakopee, Farmington, Chanhassen and Chaska – decided to leave, the newspaper reported. New Prague had sought entry into the Metro West and Big 9 conferences, applications that were rejected. New Prague was a 35-year-member of the Missota Conference.

recreational opportunities, including a public boat access that is planned in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources. The public water access will help to alleviate parking congestion and hazardous parking conditions along County Road 92 near the DNR access. In April, the Carver County Board approved the amended purchase agreement with Alta Investments, LLC, for this parcel. The negotiated purchase price of $3,552,000 plus $70,000 in closing and professional service fees was reached. It is anticipated that Carver County will receive full reimbursement for the acquisition through the Metropolitan Council. Early concepts for Lake Waconia Regional Park date back

to master plans created in 1975. In 1996, an acquisition master plan was approved through a public process to define the park boundary and provide guidance for the types of recreation to be offered at the park. In 2001, another public input and review process was undertaken to create the development master plan for the park. This plan reaffirmed recreational uses and laid out the proposed locations of roadways, beach, picnic areas, trails, boat access, group use area, sledding hill, playground, parking and areas of conservation.
