State Sen. Ortman Targets Franken’s U.S. Senate Seat The state representative whose district includes a portion of Carver County near Belle Plaine has larger political aspirations. Sen. Julianne Ortman, RChanhassen, recently announced her plans to run for U.S. Senate and take on Democrat Al Franken. She is of three Republicans who want to face Franken and will likely have to survive a GOP primary to face the Minnesota Democrat. Ortman announced her candidacy Aug. 3 in Waconia. She claims Franken has lacked leadership benefitting Minne-

sota. She claims Franken is another political millionaire and is too focused on quips to address the real issues burdening the country, including government spending, the passage of Obamacare. She also criticized Franken for not alerting citizens the government was monitoring peoples’ e-mails and other communications, a variety of media outlets have reported. Ortman said her own political experience will be put to good use. She has served in the Minnesota Legislature since 2002. Her district includes Carver County.
