You all know I love a good pampering session when it comes to my skin. & there’s nothing better than an all body skin treatment like a bath. I mean why not, treat yourself right? Especially since life can get so chaotic sometimes, it’s really important to take time out to decompress and unwind. There’s something very luxurious and relaxing about taking baths. Since I haven’t had time to really do a spa day, I try to pamper myself at home now! Beyond the relaxation part, there are also proven health benefits to taking baths. The hot/warm water is known to induce a sweat which helps remove toxins, and also the heat of the water kills bacteria decreasing the number of cold you may get during the year. It also promotes blood circulation and on top of that it improves your immune system to help fight infections & colds. So today I’ll be sharing with you my 7 bathing essential that I use to create a relaxing at home spa experience!

ESSENTIALS FOR DIY SPA SKIN YOU CAN ENJOY EVERYDAY

roses

I know, I’m just obsessed with roses. Roses for my office, for my home, and definitely for my baths. It’s just that roses are so classic and beautiful, seeing them just brightens my day! But aside from personal preference, the natural oils found in roses can help retain moisture in the skin. This results in your skin feeling smooth and soft. And did you guys know the rose scent is actually found to help with anxiety and nervous tension, which is perfect to use when in stressful situations. It’s quite versatile as well since it restores even the most sensitive skin!

candles

Ingredients Glycerin, Sea Salt (Maris Sal), Propylene Glycol, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Sucrose, Sodium Cocoylisethionate, Fragrance (Parfum), Stearic Acid, Tocopherylacetate.

scents

Scents are so important in creating a relaxing environment. I love adding scents through essential oils or candles or even flowers like lavender! I don’t know about you guys, but for me, certain scents can immediately relax me or make me feel happy. Like the smell of Allen’s cologne, or Chloe after she’s had her own bath! Try using oils also because hot water combined with essential oils can create a spa-like treatment and can ease symptoms of physical ailments (like my shoulder). Different oils have properties and benefits. Taking baths with oils are so great since it is so customizable  and you can choose certain ones or combinations to suit your needs!

BEAUTY FOR YOU Bobbi Brown

What's the one makeup tip you wish every woman knew? “Use a color corrector under concealer. The corrector will get rid of the darkness and counteract green or purple shadows, and then concealer lightens the area so it blends into your skin. For medium skin tones all the way to darker black, you'll need a peach toned corrector, and if you're paler, you'll want to go for a pink or bisque. When you find the right combination, it's magic. Also, don't just use it under the eye, dab it at the top of your nose by the eye socket. When you lighten that up, it really opens up the eye.

“I truly believe that your attitude and perspective determines how successful you will be and how far you will go”

Photographer Keith Claytor “Time Frozen Photography” Photography chose me. On an expedition to Nigeria in 2003, images that I took as creative vacation photos were well received - so much so that they have been featured in art galleries throughout CT and NYC. From that experience I realized my purpose and dove headfirst into pursuing a passion.

YES YOU
 CAN!

EVERYDAY CAN BE A GOOD DAY!

JUNE ARCHER

I believe that we have the power to change our lives when we change our perspectives and my goal is to help you do just that. I wasn't always a motivational teacher. I was kinda in the music business. OK...not kinda; I was deep in the music industry. I worked my way up from winning in school singing contests, to winning contests at the world famous Apollo Theatre. I went from singing in a driveway in Windsor, Connecticut, to signing a major record deal in New York City. I went from reporting to the president of a record label to becoming the president of a record label. I went from working with unsigned artists

BELLE New York Magazine

careers, to working with the likes of Jay Z and Russell Simmons. How? I changed my perspective to gain my accomplishments in life. You see, all of those things I mentioned before, they weren't handed to me. Doors closed on me, but I saw the alternative side to it and knew it meant that other doors were going to open for me. So here I am 2 published books later, former major record label executive, owner of a marketing company, and motivational teacher. All I am saying is if you view things differently, you will have a better chance at success.

July/August 2016 bellenewyork.com

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE. CHANGE YOUR LIFE

BELLE NEW YORK MAGAZINE LIFE.STYLE JUNE ARCHER How did you get started and what do you think is the most important trait of a motivational teacher? I was a national recording artist with the R&B group Room Service signed to Elektra Records in the 90's. After the group disbanded I dove into the role of Music Executive working with artists such as Beyonce, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Mario and Omarion to name a few. After looking for a change in 2010, I decided to motivate and inspire those around me with daily quotes. After much encouragement from those who enjoyed these "Keys To Success" as I called them, I found myself putting those quotes into one and producing a book. Thus birthing and publishing my first project, "Yes, Everyday Can Be A Good Day". People enjoyed it so much they started to ask me to speak at certain events, schools, colleges, juvenile detention centers, graduations and corporate mixers to talk about my story and my quotes.

After speaking at my first few events it became clear the most important trait of a motivational speaker is being as transparent as you can in order to inspire and motivate your audience.

What was your first experience like speaking in front of your audience? Because I was used to performing in front of large audiences speaking came naturally easy. My first time was amazing because it was the first time on stage speaking to inspire people rather than performing to entertain them. The feeling was incredible!

How did you get your first break into the industry? My first break on the motivational speaking circuit came from me telling a promoter that he needed to book me to open up for Trent Shelton and Eric Thomas, two incredible motivational speakers. I had just met both of them at a chance meeting and brief encounter before an event they were booked to speak at. Weeks later I got a call from that same promoter asking if I was serious and interested in being an opener for Trent Shelton. I went on my first tour opening up for Trent Shelton and it was an amazing experience.

What motivates you as a motivational teacher? The thing that motivates me the most is being blessed to wake up every morning with the opportunity to live my dreams, make my dreams come true and inspire others to do the same.

How do you prepare your message to ensure it makes an impact beyond the event? My preparation before an event starts with me asking the promoter what do you specifically want your students, employees or audience to walk away with? What do you want taught or reinforced. Every talk is different and is tailored to that specific event. I like to walk around and get a sense of what the energy is like. What kind of mood is the room in? Who am I talking to? What do they want to hear...? I take all of that and walk myself into a corner and pray for clarity of thought, clarity of words and clarity of delivery, that is able to

touch at least one person in the room. That is how I have prepared for every event and I will continue to stick with what got me here so far. That is until I find myself on Oprah's couch! I will diligently prepare much differently for that.

Who is your biggest influential speaker/teacher? Why? I am a student of life and get my influences from so many people and places. If I had to choose who has been the most influential it would have to be a toss-up between Trent Shelton, Inky Johnson and Eric Thomas. The conviction they all have and the love for people and their own families is what I admire most. To see that means a lot to me.

What is the biggest risk you’ve taken and did you learn from it? In 2003, I walked away from corporate america after being told by my manager that I need to put in my two weeks notice. She felt that my talents were not being used to the fullest potential and told me I didn't belong there. It taught me that no matter how much we run from our passion it will find a way to haunt us. The other lesson was to never settle after you've been defeated. Get back up and fight for what you love! My recording group disbanded after we lost our record deal and I went back to corporate america as my plan b. It was a safe place but a place that stifled my dreams and aspirations to move forward. The experience was great but my time was up at that junction along my journey.

What is your favorite quote and how does it inspire you? My favorite quote would have to be one of my own... "Yes! Everyday Can Be A Good Day" because it reminds me daily that no matter what happens, the minute you wake up you have a choice to make the best of your day or situations that cross your path. That choice is the difference between, everyday will not always be a good day and everyday can be a good day because you make sure you see the glass half-full instead of half-empty.

Life is about balance. How do you balance your work life with family life? Life balance is very important if you want to be successful. Being successful is creating a work / life balance that allows you to be successful and share your success with your family and friends. I am blessed to be an entrepreneur with the ability to make my own schedule so that I can have the opportunity to do things with my family. My family is more precious than anything in the world to me. Being able to work towards making my dreams come true in order to spend more time with them is what inspires me every day. More importantly, the support that I get from my wife is equal to none. She is supportive and patient even when I go to her with my next big idea, dream or potential opportunity to be of service to the community. For that reason alone motivates me to find and create that balance.

Photographer Keith Claytor “Time Frozen Photography

What is your story? What would you like for people who are reading this article to know about you? My story is one that can inspire just about anyone. I was a kid who had big dreams, who loves people and wants to make the world a better place. My dreams took me places I could only dream about but the key was, I truly believe dreams do come true. Just because you had a dream come true doesn't mean you stop dreaming. You dream even bigger! We all have more than one dream in us, we just have to be obedient in order to pursue them so they can come true. Where does it say that you can only make one dream come true?

Where do you see June Archer in ten years? In ten years, I would love to have written two or three more books. Have the opportunity to speak at colleges and hopefully where I went to college, Central Connecticut State University on the topic of "What it means to make your dreams come true" or "Marketing and Branding your Business". I want to travel the globe sharing what it means to dream and make your dreams come true. Lastly, I want to have my own daytime television show that will inspire and motivate people to follow their dreams.

What advice would you like to oer to the person who desires to follow in your footsteps as a motivational teacher? The best advice I can share with anyone who wants to be a motivational speaker or life coach is to make sure you have a testimony that you are willing to share and be transparent about. If you want to inspire others you have to connect with them on something or about something. You are going to go through some things! After you do, write about it, talk about it and teach others how to navigate the same things they are going through. If you are willing to do that, you will find your calling and walk in favor.

There has been so much tragedy in recent years and even more so this week with police against African American males, how do you feel about what is going on? What we have seen over the past few weeks and years with our men of color and law enforcement is the lack of communication. We need more dialogue between the police and the communities they are hired to protect and serve. Once we gain a new found understanding we will be able to hold each other accountable for our actions. Community leaders and the chiefs of these departments have to come together to establish a respect for following the law and the law establishing an understanding of the community and those who live within it. Once we do that we can begin the healing process, learn and unlearn stereotypes and start to move forward.

We can no longer have men of color being treated this way. However, if we don't encourage our men of color to stop killing each other we will not be able to justify to others why they should stop killing us. We can't crucify others for killing our own when we don't crucify our own for killing our own.

How can we help change the perception when it comes to African American males in our time? The best way to change the perception is to show them images of greatness. Take them into environments of greatness. Introduce them to men who are successful in all walks of life earning a living doing the right thing. We are trying to change that perception in our own community and surrounding areas with our 100 Men of Color Black Tie Gala and Awards. An idea I created after the death of Trayvon Martin. Our young men need to see examples of greatness as well as the blueprint to being successful. They need these images now more than ever!

What is your biggest fear as an African American male? My fear is that I don't dream big enough to show my own son that you can do whatever your heart desires. By showing him, I prove to other men of color that anything is possible.

What is the biggest downfall when it comes to success? The biggest downfall when it comes to success is the fear of success. Most of us are afraid to succeed and do better out of fear of what others will think. Don't worry about what they think. Be successful. Come back to the community and inspire them. Show them they can do it. Your presence means more to them than you think. Most of them don't want anything from you expect to give back. Not just money. Give back your time to the schools and community centers.

What is the biggest fear when it comes to being successful? The biggest fear when it comes to being successful is not knowing when to say no. As you climb the ladder of success you will be pulled in many directions. You can't be everything to all people. Nor will you be able to please everyone. Do what you can and do what you can to protect and grow your brand. You will have to say no at times. Being successful means learning when to say yes and when to say no. The fear comes in because you feel if you say no you will lose friends or make enemies.

How do you get over the word no, when yes is all we want to hear? I get over the word no easier these days after a mentor of mine taught me that, "If you aren't getting enough "no's", you're not working hard enough and you're asking for too little".

How can we change our perspective in order to change our life? The best way to change your perspective and change your life is to appreciate the moment you wake up. Understanding that you are truly blessed and that you have the chance to make your dreams come true or continue to pursue your dreams.

TIPS TO

MAKE YOUR LEGS LOOK LONGER Leg circles Will strengthen your hips flexors while stretching the hamstrings muscles and quadriceps. This stretching combination will help elongate your legs. To do the exercise, lie flat on the back and let the abdominal muscles pull in to the stomach. Lift the right foot straight to point to the ceiling as the left leg remain flat on the ground. By keeping both hips firmly to the ground, circle your right leg towards your opposite shoulder and then back as you inhale deeply. Exhale as you rotate the right foot back to the straightened position. Circle for five times in the same direction before switching directions. Having done that, change feet and do repeat the same exercise with the left leg.

Yoga Squat This is a modified squat that’s done when you’ve widened the space between your legs. The exercise concentrates on your inner thighs. To do this exercise, stand on your feet by maintaining a wider space between your feet than the hip width. With your toes turned out, squat down to as low as possible while keeping the chest upright and letting the arms hang down in front of you. Swing the arms up and to the sides when you are standing up so that they curve above the head. Do these exercises ten times a day.

Single-Straight Leg Stretch Single Straight Leg Stretch is an intense exercise meant to help keep the muscles of your legs from bulking up. The exercise makes them grow stronger and longer because of the sleek muscle that develops in your upper leg. To do the exercise, lie flat on your back and lift both knees towards your neck. Now extend the right foot straight out and hold it 6 inches above the ground. Stretch the left foot straight up. By holding the ankle of your left foot with both hands, elevate your shoulders and head off the ground. Pulse your left leg in towards the torso in two quick successions. After that keep your legs straight and quickly scissor them to switch the right leg to the top. Repeat the exercise with your right leg at the top. Perform 5 to 10 sets of this exercise per day.

THE TRUTH BEHIND BOTTLED WATER

7 REASONS TO NEVER DRINK BOTTLED WATER AGAIN by Christiana Z. Peppard

How we drink our water shows us what kind of society we are. I want my body and my society to reflect sustainable values, so I only drink disposable, plastic bottled water if there is absolutely no alternative. If I were in a truly extreme situation—say, a cholera epidemic, an area without reliable water supply, or a desert, for example—then I would drink bottled water. Happily, most of us are not in those situations. And wonderful alternatives are easily available. Sound extreme? It’s not, when you consider these 7 truths about bottled water. Read on, and become a healthier person, a smarter consumer, and a global citizen!

1. Plastic bottles are not sustainable, no matter what we've been told. Using vast quantities of fossil fuels and water, these bottles are manufactured, filled, and shipped around the globe. (Not a good carbon footprint!) Neither are bottles biodegradable in any meaningful way: what you drink in a few minutes can stick around for a thousand years. Even with recycling efforts, 6 out of 7 plastic bottles consumed in the U.S. are “downcycled”—sent somewhere out of sight and out of mind where, for the next millennia, toxins from degrading plastic containers can leach into watersheds and soil. That’s just not something we need to give to global neighbors and future generations. 2. Some bottled water is glorified tap water at 10,000 times the cost. The label on your bottled water may depict a peaceful mountain stream, but that doesn't mean the water inside is pure and pristine. Only some bottled water comes from springs or groundwater sources. It turns out that approximately 25% of bottled water is sourced from ... the tap. Sure, some companies filter or radiate the tap water with ultraviolet light before selling it to you at several thousand times the cost of municipal tap water. (Examples include Aquafina, Dasani, and many other brands.) Moreover, studies show that bottled water samples can contain phthalates, mold, microbes, benzene, trihalomethanes, even arsenic. And only recently did the FDA start regulating bottled water for E. Coli, thanks to advocacy by the Natural Resources Defense Council. Health standards are often a wash and may even favor tap water. (If you’re concerned about municipal water supply and want to know more, check out this helpful resource, which can help you learn about your municipal water supply and decide if filtration or purification is right for you.) 3. Many bottled waters contain toxins, even if they've nixed BPA. Plastic isn't just bad for the planet, it’s not good for you, either. Bottled water companies increasingly use BPA-free plastic, but laced into plastic bottles are other chemicals that can seep out if bottles are exposed to heat or sit around for a long time. Some of these chemicals are possible endocrine disruptors. No one knows for sure what the health outcomes are. Do you really want your body to undergo that experiment? 4. Fashion, foodies, and sustainable cities are taking back the tap. New York City’s Fashion Week, Chez Panisse, the city of San Francisco and Grand Canyon National Park have all reduced or eliminated bottled water! AVEDA teamed up with New York’s Department of

Environmental Protection during Fashion Week to provide free drinking fountains on the streets of New York. 5. Local water is the new complement to local, organic food. Local food is everywhere these days: CSAs, farmers markets, farm-to-table dining. That local food is grown and cooked with … local water! It’s the invisible part of the sustainable, healthy food you eat. So, locavores, it’s time to get your hydrophilia on and appreciate your water supply just as much as you do your CSA. Shouldn’t we care for and support our water sources like we support healthy, organic, local farms? 6. There ARE gorgeous alternatives for on-the-go hydrophiles! Choose a durable, re-useable water bottle (BPA-free or, even better, stainless steel) in whatever size or shape and design you like. I think of it as an accessory: at my most recent job interview, a team member commented on my green, reusable water bottle. (I got the job.) For home, try the new, limited edition Soma water carafe and filter. It’s a sleek, glass carafe with the first-ever fully biodegradable filter (made from coconut shells—stupendously cool), with a new filter sent automatically every 60 days. As a working professional and parent with an eye for design, I love this. For those who want an in-sink filtration system, check out this helpful resource from Food & Water Watch. And for sparkling water addicts (like myself), I highly recommend Soda Stream. 7. Change is simple—and makes a real difference! When you ditch disposable bottled water, you save money, live healthier, and join a movement for global sustainability. Plus, it’s easy. And you’ll save money.

LIFE.STYLE WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE

CAN I CHECK THOSE BAGS?

Curbside Check-in as Time Saver Some of the people I spoke with used curbside both to check in and check bags, while others checked in online and simply dropped their bags at the curb before heading into the airport. Everyone cited not having to wait in line more than five minutes (if at all) as the biggest perk. While the lines moved at a snails pace inside, they could always count on their skycaps to speed them through the process. The Curbside Check-in Type The people who were most enthusiastic about curbside check-in fell roughly into a few categories. There were those traveling with kids (especially small kids). And there were also those who, for a variety of

reasons, were traveling with a lot of stuff. The broadest group was anyone in a hurry—that included the chronically late, frequent travelers trying to minimize transit, and anyone who had battled traffic on the way to the airport. And finally, there were the people with mobility issues, who appreciated that the distance between car and bag drop could be measured in mere feet. TSA Pre-Check One significant result of these new policies is heightened security measures at airports, as TSA agents now assume full responsibility for screening all commercial passengers and luggage. If you've traveled frequently through U.S. airports in the

past decade, you're probably familiar with the long, tedious process of getting through airport security. This process includes sorting and limiting the amount of liquids you have, taking off belts and shoes, and going through a body scanner. Luckily, TSA Pre-Check allows a number of low-risk travelers (and their children of 12 years and younger) to go through a more efficient and expedited screening process. Since its inception in 2011, over 55 million travelers have been able to use TSA Pre-Check. While it was initially available only to frequent fliers of certain airlines who opted into the program, the application for TSA Pre-Check has been opened to the general public since December 2013.
