love fall! It’s my favorite season in the Northeast: Crisper days, beautiful colors everywhere, and — in my opinion — it boasts the best fashion of all the seasons. There’s a reason New York City is bustling at this time of year: School is back in session, weekending in the Hamptons has turned to weekending in the city, and the most sought-after tickets (New York Fashion Week, not “Hamilton”) are hard to come by. What’s better than NYFW, when top designers showcase their spectacular spring lines?! It’s the best of both worlds as fall fashion is in full effect, but dreaming of next spring and what’s to come is truly a NY fashionista’s dream. With that in mind, we’ve filled the pages of this issue with so much style inspiration that no matter what your budget, we have you covered when it comes to looking BELLA-fabulous this fall. Our fashion team, led by Fashion Director Marcus Stewart, has done an amazing job of capturing the New York woman in both our fashion editorials and style pages. I love the new look Marcus has incorporated, and I must admit that I went a little crazy shopping these pages myself (there are so many good buys!).

Another very exciting addition to the BELLA family is our new sister publication launching this month — BELLA Los Angeles. It’s finally here, and I can’t be more excited to have two amazing publications in two amazing cities (my favorite cities, no less!). Although the LA version will have its own, authentic West Coast vibe, our message will remain the same, and I am eager to see how LA women define the beauty in their lives and how we can incorporate that message into those pages. RUFFLES Designers: Christian Siriano, Giambattista Valli, Gucci The return of the ultimate feminine lady is back, and she is here to stay! Ruffles and frills were at an all-time high this season. From sheer tiers to structured frills, everywhere you looked there was sure to be a cascade of dramatic elegance in dresses, tops, coats, and skirts. TIP: If you are a beginner to risky fashion choices, try this trend in small proportions. Choose a ruffled hemline on a skirt or a blouse with a sweet and delicate ruffled neckline. Regardless of your ruffle dosage, this trend is sure to make you feel a bit more feminine and dainty.

STATEMENT FUR Designers: Michael Kors, Versace, Rochas Universally, fur—both real and faux— commanded an impressive and strong presence on this season’s runways. Designers decided that the days of traditional and dated fur pieces should be a thing of the past. The “new” fur featured bright colors and graphic prints—a great way to go bold! TIP: Pair your fur with a sexy dress and sky-high heels when you’re feeling glamorous, or opt for skinny jeans and flats for a chic weekend casual look.

THE CAPE Designers: Missoni, Tommy Hilfiger, Derek Lam Move over, plaid ponchos! The cape is back and the runways showed many variations that were both retro and chic! From micro caplets that just cover the shoulder to dramatic and colorful capes by Missoni, the cape is the new jacket! TIP: This trend is perfect for all shapes and sizes. Go for a mid-length piece in a basic color like navy or black with soft shoulders. This style is perfect for those chilly but not-too-cold fall days. For a sleeker look, pair your cape with something fitted on the bottom.

VELVET Designers: Alberta Ferretti, Ralph Lauren, Roland Mouret Viva la velvet! To say it’ll be a season full of creamy velvets would be an understatement. Designers fell head over heels in love with this rich, luxe material. From long, elegant evening gowns by Ralph Lauren to rock ‘n roll, overthe-top, embellished velvet pieces by Anna Sui, velvet rocked the runways. This year we are seeing a broader range of offerings, from luxe and comfy dresses to show-stopping blouses. BORN IN ITALY INTO A FAMILY FIRMLY SITUATED IN FASHION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP, DOMENICO VACCA WAS GROOMED TO BECOME A MAN OF LUXURY. IN THE 1940S, HIS GRANDMOTHER HAD A FASHION HOUSE IN HIS HOMETOWN OF ANDRIA, LOCATED IN THE PUGLIA REGION OF THE SOUTH OF ITALY. IT’S HERE THAT VACCA WOULD WATCH HER DESIGN AND MAKE BEAUTIFUL DRESSES FOR WOMEN. 40 THE FASHION ISSUE

These early experiences of up close and personal craftsmanship, paired with a growing understanding of true luxury, have helped cultivate the world renowned designer’s vision for his eponymous brand and his own fashion house that encompasses a 10-story building off Fifth Avenue. A recent $20 million overhaul includes men’s and women’s retail, fragrance, tableware, home goods, a bespoke atelier, an Italian espresso bar and cafe, barber shop, beauty salon, rooftop terrace, art gallery, private members-only club, and 30 long-term-stay furnished residential units designed by Vacca himself. Vacca has long been known as an expert in luxury Italian tailoring for both men and women and has outfitted some of the biggest stars in Hollywood for both red carpet and on-camera roles, among them Jeremy Piven’s suits for “Entourage,” Glenn Close in “Damages,” and Denzel Washington in “American Gangster.” Some of his regular clientele include Arianna Huffington, Forest Whitaker, Jeremy Piven, Maxwell, Mickey Rourke, and Ivana Trump. The launch of his new flagship location on Fifth Avenue has taken Vacca from celebrity designer to complete lifestyle

brand, with a concept he calls “casual luxury” aimed at reviving in-store retail with a completely sensory experience. BELLA got the inside scoop on this huge undertaking — listen in to hear Vacca’s take on luxury and the state of design… What was your inspiration was for this project, and how did this all happen? Were you aware of how big of a project this would be? Yes, we are perfectly conscious about this. I only take on projects when I feel comfortable and clear about what I want to do. I’m at the point in my life where I want and could do exactly what I am passionate about, so I did. I have the best team in place and my job is to give them confidence so they can do their jobs. It all started with the DV brand, of course. I love clothes, and my father was one the best-dressed men in South Italy, so style and fashion have always been there. The brand organically grew over the years and I saw a void … I saw a change in what my customers wanted and expected, so I decided to create it. Now, the brand has gone above and beyond the clothes. We aren’t just a boutique; we will have a salon, café, art gallery, and a members-only club. It’s a full lifestyle house.


Were you very hands-on in the design and layout process? I was involved in every detail of the house, from the layout, furniture, crystal paint, and Italian leather chairs. I design everything, which makes it a very personal and special project that I hope everyone will enjoy. This place is huge but it still feels peaceful and intimate. How long did it take you to design the floor plan so that your clients can experience that same feeling? It took me two months to design the floor plan because I wanted everything to make sense. The models can go upstairs and have hair and make-up done, downstairs to get dressed, into the club to do the runway show for editorials, and then outside to the beautiful terrace to shoot for the lookbook. Then the customers can go downstairs and shop. It’s a full-service, vertical-run business.

You are synonymous with luxury clothing, but a members-only club and a residence? What was your exact inspiration for incorporating this into your space? I like hotels; I live nine months out of the year in them, so I have always thought it would be great to create a living space — something that is very intimate and beautiful. Then when you go out every night for meetings, dinners, and so on, you get tired of the typical nightclub or social house experience. I thought about my clients. If you’re 30+ and want to be social, you don’t want to deal with the promoters and the door. Sometimes the clubs don’t understand these are the guys you should treat well. Not only do they spend very well, but they are also repeat customers and very loyal. I wanted to create something that’s very intimate for this [clientele], where they can feel at home. Here you can text and say you’re coming, and once you arrive we will say “I was waiting for you.” We will know what you like to drink, your table will be set up to your liking instead of the usual, “Are you a member, let us see your member ID?” That is not what the customer wants; that is not true luxury. You also have an amazing, separate fullservice salon for both men and women and your own product line. How has it been managing this new addition of beauty to your clothing empire? It’s like doing a movie (laughs), and since we outfit a lot of movie stars I know a little bit about what goes into that process. The simple answer is you take it step by step. We do one thing at a time and when we are done with that step, we take a step back and see how it fits in with the overall brand and that’s how it goes. Either it works or we rework it so that it will work. We take no short cuts. For our beauty products we use no harsh chemicals and nothing is tested on animals. For me, it’s very important that everything be organic. The same is true with the food offerings you will find here.

Lets talk a bit about fashion, specifically suiting. You’ve been doing custom bespoke forever. Recently there has been a huge spike in these bespoke companies popping up. From someone with a fashion degree and 10 years+ of experience, these places aren’t truly offering bespoke … what are your thoughts? Not only is it not bespoke, but the quality and skillset are not there. People think now they can have a bespoke suit done by hand for $500 and the delivery date will be the next morning. If you know where this is possible, let me know and I will buy (laughter). It’s simply not possible. My point is some people do not realize the difference. All consumers are not educated, so this is what happens. It has not changed our business because it’s a different client, but I understand how this is not a good thing for the menswear business as a whole. Let’s talk about the future of style and fashion. What are your words of advice for young designers? In order to be a designer you have to have a very strong point of view, whatever it is. Now you can cultivate that by going to school. But if you don’t have anything that can set you apart, you’re going to blend in too much. Your clothes have to be sellable. Your point of view has to make sense. You want to see people wearing your clothes — this is the reward.

You have to be 80 percent artist, 20 percent business-minded. You want to position yourself to create something timeless. I designed a bag 15 years ago; I loved it and everyone did. It’s called the “Julie” and we are still selling it today — it’s a classic. Develop things that go beyond a collection; collections are just for the season. You want to go beyond the seasons. What’s next for you? We have lots in the works. We have an offer to now create this same idea in Mexico City, London, and Dubai. This is the new way to do retail. Cellfina for Cellulite

Most women have cellulite, and unfortunately, genetics and anatomy are to blame. Until recently, the only way to reduce cellulite was with massage therapy. The results of massage therapy have varied, and women have only seen a 10-15 percent improvement in their affected areas. Until now. Cellfina is a new procedure approved by the FDA that promises to improve the lumps and bumps associated with cellulite. Cellfina achieves its results by releasing fibrous bands that pull on the skin from below the fat. This leads to a flatter skin surface, thus minimizing cellulite. Treatments are about an hour, but in order to maximize your results, you must be within 10 pounds of your normal body weight. The three bungalows that comprise the salon offer a relaxing respite from the bustling city — a soothing sanctuary, if you will. Realizing a Dream

When he’s not working, Dean enjoys spending time with his four Labradors — Hunter, Spencer, Bella Moon, and Riley June — or working out. He also likes to visit farmers’ markets and cook. And if a fan stops to ask how many pumps of WEN they should use (or even how crazy Lewis is), he’s always happy to answer. As much as he loves his work, time away from it makes him a better businessman, too. “Many times I find inspiration for upcoming projects while I’m out in nature or running everyday errands,” he adds.

“As a photographer, I could explain to a stylist what I envisioned and what the model should look like, but I was never satisfied with how the look came out,” he says. He later attended cosmetology school to perfect the images of styles and cuts he saw in his mind. To this day, he is the one taking photos for his salon and product labels.

Dean’s salon was originally located in Bel-Air and moved to its current location in 1993. Since then, he has become a well-known leader in the beauty industry. Dean still spends a few days a week directly with clients in the salon. “My salon is my passion, and I love to spend as much time as possible there.” The rest of his time is spent with his product development team as the WEN

Life is hectic for Dean, as he balances the demands of running his salon and product line, along with appearances and home renovations. Staying centered and humble has been key to managing all of his obligations. “I use my platform to help others and hope to be an inspiration for those looking for motivation in achieving their dreams,” he says. “As someone who worked and fought hard to build what I have now, I know my journey was tough but well worth it. For Gregory M. Roache, real estate broker and father of four, living in NYC was something he envisioned since childhood. Trips with his mother into the city’s Garment District in the early 1980s left him intrigued by its pace and energy. “Ever since I was a kid I loved the city,” says Roache. “I knew back then that I wanted to run my own business and live here when I got older.” The youngest of five children, Roache grew up in River Edge, NJ. At just 14 years old, the future broker started his own landscaping company – Greg’s Lawn Service – and after one year amassed more than 30 properties in town as clients. “This was my first taste at running my own business and I absolutely loved it,” he says. Watching both his father and his brother start their own businesses, which would later grow into larger companies, lit the fire inside Roache to do the same. As he worked his way up in the real estate industry, first with rentals and then cooperative and condo sales, he landed a job with the prestigious real estate firm of Brown Harris Stevens in 2000, a position he says was a “dream come true.” The decision to join the company turned out to be one of the best Roache has made both professionally and personally. A year and a half later, he met his wife, Emily, who worked at the firm; together they decided to sell real estate as a team. “We made a pact to each other that we were going to be successful,” he says. BELLA sat down with Roache, one of the most sought-after brokers in the industry, to talk about his life and career, and why he thinks the Big Apple is one of the best cities in the world. What is it about the real estate business you enjoy most? The satisfaction that comes from people [both buyers and sellers] entrusting me and looking for my guidance in the most important decision and often their most significant investment. I enjoy the process of listening to buyers and spending time with them to understand what they’re looking for in a home and guiding them to the right buildings. Approaching 20 years in the business of finding homes for New Yorkers, there are very few buildings that I have not been inside.

The best compliment is when buyers tell me that I’m not like any other broker they’ve met and they don’t feel any sales pressure. For me, I have my own business and I am focused on building relationships, not trying to make a quick sale. What qualities do you think are necessary to be a successful broker in NYC? Someone once told me very early on in my career, “If you’re afraid of wasting time, you’re in the wrong business.” I feel in this business one needs to be ready and willing to take risks and be resilient when you hear “no” from time to time. Along with all of the positivity and satisfaction that I enjoy in working with buyers and sellers, there are plenty of times for one reason or another things don’t work out, oftentimes in the 11th hour of the process. Now in hindsight I realize that nothing is a waste of time; every relationship is important, even the ones that don’t result in a sale.

Which neighborhoods are in high demand these days? Which is your personal favorite? There’s been a big shift from Upper East Side and Upper West Side to Downtown Manhattan. A surge in new construction downtown has led to several great new schools and more beautiful, polished neighborhoods that uptown folks would not have considered five to 10 years ago. Harlem is my personal favorite. Since we are growing out of our apartment on Central Park West in the 100s, we are looking for a new apartment in that neighborhood. Harlem is such an incredibly beautiful part of town. The architecture and the building inventory consist mostly of brownstones and shorter buildings, which lend themselves to much less congestion and brighter living spaces. To date, what is the most extravagant home you have listed, and what made it so special? I am proud to say that I have sold in every neighborhood of Manhattan, from a small onebedroom to elaborate homes in excess of $20 million. One of my personal favorites is a fourbedroom that I have currently listed at Manhattan House. This home, designed by the brilliant Nina Seirafi, is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and incredibly spacious homes I have listed.

How would you describe the quintessential New Yorker? New Yorkers are caring people who keep to themselves but are there for you when you need them. They have an innate and effortless sense of style that is only New York. I know I am biased, but I really feel my four kids are great examples of quintessential New Yorkers.

I KNOW I AM BIASED, BUT I REALLY FEEL MY FOUR KIDS ARE GREAT EXAMPLES OF QUINTESSENTIAL NEW YORKERS.”

For example, every morning during the school year we take the C train on our way to the boys’ school, and as we get off at Columbus Circle, my 9-year old son Giles heads straight for the singer/piano player to say hello. At least once a week he drops his own dollar in the jar. It’s always interesting to watch their faces as we pass by the more interesting characters. From my 12-year-old Liam down to my 4-year old Slane, they don’t bat an eyelash. It is a live-and-let-live mentality rather than simply being desensitized by the sometimes chaotic surroundings. As a father of four young children, what led you to choose city life over the suburbs? What do you think the benefits are to raising your family in NYC? I have always wanted my children to be exposed to things at a young age that I don’t feel could be as feasible anywhere but here. For the obvious reasons, within several miles of our front door we have the culture and diversity of the entire world. The city life provides a safe level of autonomy for my children, which is such an important part of growing up. Since my business is based in Manhattan, my wife and I made the decision early on to sacrifice space for a quick commute home. The best piece of advice you’ve received? It would be from my older brother Kevin – to take risks. In running my business, this advice has proven to be golden on countless occasions. Personally, I feel that taking risks and taking the harder road go hand in hand. What I’ve learned is that when faced with a decision, the more difficult path is most often the better one. To quote Malcolm Forbes: “Failure is success if we learn from it.” I think this applies to every area of life and business. As a New Yorker, what are some of your favorite things to see and do? Like many New Yorkers, Emily and I have a love/hate relationship with running that we’re passing along to our children. Another favorite is eating. We love Upstate in the East Village for oysters and beer and frequent Josh Capon’s El Toro Blanco for the best margaritas and Mexican street corn in NYC. The Cecil in Harlem has the most amazing Afro-Asian fare and I feel like New Wonjo on 32nd Street is our second home; hands down it’s the best Korean BBQ (charcoal) restaurant in the city. In your opinion, why is New York City the best city in the world to live in? There is a strange pull that New York has – no matter where we go for vacation and however beautiful that place may be, we are always happy to come home. B

Kelli Barrett and Jarrod Spector possess a special artistry and chemistry that captivate an audience. With their engaging personas and playful banter between songs, they light up a room ever so easily.

The Broadway stars, who tied the knot in 2014, have taken their original act, “This Is Dedicated: Music’s Greatest Marriages,” to venues throughout the New York region. A poignant and often hilarious musical they co-wrote, the show treats the audience to a very enjoyable evening of musical nostalgia.

Directed by Eric Michael Gillett, with music direction by Adam Ben-David and backed by a team of seven musicians, the show highlights Barrett’s and Spector’s endless energy. They will be back by popular demand at Feinstein’s on November 1-5 this fall to premier a brand new show. “We were always talking about doing

a show together and this concept of the music of husband and wife teams was a natural fit,” says Spector. When performing together, they will rehearse whenever possible at their apartment in Harlem as well as at other venues. They wrote part of “This is Dedicated” while riding in the car to the Jersey Shore. “While we don’t break out in spontaneous song at home, we do sing together quite often,” adds Barrett. “We have the opportunity to rehearse together whenever we want, so that helps the creative process, which at times can be all-consuming.” Despite having starred on Broadway’s biggest stages, both agree that smaller venues give them a personal rapport with the audience that is hard to duplicate at larger theaters. “It’s very intimate being so close to the


audience,” explains Barrett. “Also, we have complete control over our own shows and that’s truly satisfying from an artist’s perspective.” Both Barrett and Spector are blessed with powerful, melodic voices that can produce one magical moment after another. With her striking looks and easy smile, Barrett’s onstage presence complements Spector’s innate charm and palpable charisma.

They take the responsibilities that come with performing on Broadway and other venues very seriously, and always try to honor their professional commitment to the show and the audience. “There are always new faces in the audience each night, so it’s important to keep the show fresh,” says Spector. Spector, who hails from Philadelphia, starred in Broadway’s “Jersey Boys” for a record 1,500 performances and received a Tony nomination for Broadway’s “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” You might say that Spector was born to perform. “Performing was kind of decided for me, and I began taking voice lessons before I was three years old, and was on television shortly afterwards,” he recalls. A child performer, he debuted on Broadway at age nine in “Les Miserables.” The demanding repertoires of “Jersey Boys” and “Beautiful” require a vocal range and precision that few in show business will attempt. A self-described “rock tenor,” Spector says his unique voice has been inspired by a wide variety of musical backgrounds, from the classic sounds of the Great American Songbook to the Beatles and Billy Joel. Barrett, a native of Virginia Beach, originated the lead role in Broadway’s “Doctor Zhivago.” Other Broadway credits include principle roles in “Wicked” and “The Royal Family.” Barrett has starred in over 20 films and TV shows, including “NCIS,” “Blue Bloods,” “Ugly Betty,” and “Law & Order: SVU.” Barrett wouldn’t want to do anything else. She says, “It’s all about discovering who you are and pushing yourself to the limits. Besides, I can’t imagine working nine-to-five.”

They met at a reading in 2010. “We became really close friends before we started dating,” Spector says. Barrett recalls their memorable engagement. “He reserved space at a favorite restaurant as a surprise and had several of his friends casing the place to make sure everything went according to plan.” Jumping back and forth from Broadway to smaller theaters can be challenging, but it affords them the opportunity to control the show’s production and creative process. “For the most part, we only perform songs during our shows that we would want to listen to ourselves,” says Barrett. Often that includes songs from the ‘60s. “Away from Broadway we are in complete control and we can get a sense of an audience rather quickly. This allows us to adjust the show as necessary.”

While neither is complaining and both feel fortunate to be given the opportunity to perform regularly on Broadway – the ultimate theatrical experience – the process behind a Broadway production can be daunting. “The show’s schedule can suddenly change according to the demands of the producer, who may decide to switch the schedule to five-show weekends,” explains Spector. “And with shows six nights per week and two matinee days, your time is never really your own.” As they well know, Broadway is always bigger than the stars it creates, and keeping things in perspective is a crucial ingredient of their marriage. “Despite our professional obligations, it is very important for us to always find the time to be together,” Barrett says. In 2010, at the height of the Great Recession, Michelle Pais was a 29-year-old real estate sales associate dreaming of one day owning her own business. As firms were closing left and right, Pais decided to make a bold move and founded her own firm, Signature Realty NJ despite the economy being in its worst state in close to 100 years.  Today, Pais — who is known as “The Barbara Corcoran of New Jersey” — is blazing trails for female Millennials as one of the top selling brokers in the country, and the top 1 percent worldwide. BELLA sat down with Pais to get an inside look at how the young real estate dynamo is defying conventional wisdom and flourishing in a tough economy.

When many real estate firms were closing their doors in 2010, what made you decide to launch your own firm? I was ready, dedicated, and committed, and failure was never an option. People were very surprised, since some of the firms that were closing doors had been around for 100 years. I was even discouraged by family and friends who were trying to “protect” me from the current economic status, but I was determined and knew this was my time. What’s the secret to staying successful during a challenging economy? A big part of it is being aware of current trends and keeping up to date with technology and education. It’s not about what the economy is doing, it’s about what you are doing in the economy. During a hot market everyone takes advantage of the opportunity, but when times get tough, the cream of the crop rises. Being a female entrepreneur and a Millennial, what are some challenges you’ve had to face and overcome? I’ve learned to balance working “in” the business vs. working “on” the business. The difference is when you’re working “in” the business, you’re focused on the day-to-day tasks, while working “on” the business requires taking a step back and focusing on high-level strategy, company culture, and figuring out ways to serve customers at a higher level. My biggest challenge is finding a balance of the two. We may soon have a woman as president for the first time ever. Tell us what being a woman in this industry has meant to you. I definitely think being a woman gives me a competitive advantage, because women are better listeners and have more intuition. Today, entrepreneurial women all across the country are setting much higher expectations. Just as I’ve been inspired to follow my ambitions by powerful women leaders, I hope I can be a source of inspiration for Millennial women today and into the future. BELLANYC.COM 89

GABRIELLE DENNIS

Fans of the hit show “Rosewood” know her as the smart, fun-loving, protective toxicologist expert Pippy (and sister to Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr.), but actress Gabrielle Dennis has been making a name for herself ever since she arrived in Los Angeles after graduating from Howard University. “I got my start on a wing and a prayer,” she says. “I hopped in my car and drove cross-country; the rest is history.” Acting wasn’t her first love, however. “My initial goal was to be the first Misty Copeland – before we knew Misty Copeland,” says the former dancer. “I wanted to be a full-fledged ballerina.” Over time, injuries sidelined that dream; however, after starring in some commercials and small productions in her hometown of Cincinnati, Dennis caught the acting bug. “It’s funny how we have a plan and God has something different in mind,” she says. Before joining “Rosewood,” Dennis found work on smaller projects. In 1998 she served as a co-host on “Teen Summit,” a teenage talk show on BET, and in 2006 she worked with Damon Wayans on his sketch comedy show “The Underground.”


“That was one of my ‘pinch-me’ moments,” Dennis says. “Landing that show, I thought I had made it. But after one season we were canceled – that was my first taste of failure in Hollywood.” Fast-forward a few years to her breakout role on “The Game,” a show that brought her more into the public eye. “People started recognizing me and it felt a bit strange,” she says. “Now being on ‘Rosewood’ puts me on a whole other level – it’s that next tier appearing on network TV.” Dennis enjoys being part of the “Rosewood” cast and working with consummate professionals, both in front of and behind the camera. “There’s a bit of magic and energy that surrounds our set because most of us haven’t been here before,” she says of her fellow young actors. She also gives a shout-out to the more experienced talent who set an example for the rest of the cast. Fans of the show can expect to see Dennis’ character rediscovering her passion for music this season. “She gave up singing when she went to work with her brother, but now that she’s quit her job and lost her fiancé, it’s time to see her dealing with real-life issues of heartbreak and loss,” says Dennis. “It will be interesting to see how Pippy deals with this pain.” Beyond her work on-screen, Dennis makes sure to give back through volunteering. From helping feed the homeless at a friend’s church to working with Habitat for Humanity and assisting fellow actor Pooch Hall and his wife Linda with their organization Djanai’s Angels, the actress is committed to philanthropy. Recently, she spent time in Jamaica with the RuJohn Foundation, helping children who are less fortunate see that they can accomplish their dreams. “I try to surround myself with people who want to give back,” says Dennis. “Maybe one day I’ll start my own non-profit.” Happiest when she is surrounded by the people she loves, Dennis is embracing all of the amazing opportunities she’s encountered since getting her start. “The sky’s the limit and I don’t feel like I’ve peaked yet,” she says. “I’m on my way.”

LAROYCE HAWKINS

Actor and comedian LaRoyce Hawkins credits a speech tournament in high school for his start in the business. “After winning a particular tournament, a judge told me he would have paid to see my performance. In my head I was in the business from that moment on,” says Hawkins. As a kid growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Hawkins explored many varied interests. While entertainment felt the most natural and provided the most fulfillment, he says what was most important was having the love and support of those closest to him. “That’s a major key for a kid, and I have to thank God for the powerful support system I grew up with,” he says. While studying acting in college, Hawkins began doing stand-up comedy and participating in open mic nights. Although he has made his career on-screen as an actor, he’s never truly separated his talents; it’s what makes him a well-rounded entertainer. “I’ve always felt like each gift was racing the other to see which would pop first, and I guess acting won,” he says. Still, he continues to perform at comedy shows a few times a month.

In addition to a handful of guest-starring roles, the actor is now pulling full-time duty as Officer Kevin Atwater, his biggest role to date, on NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” Upon learning he had landed the part, Hawkins says he thanked God and couldn’t wait to tell his family. “I felt like we did this and I knew this would be an opportunity that would change our lives, not just mine.” As the only cast member originally from the Chicago area, Hawkins says his character is a lot like him. Both are from Harvey, a south suburb of Chicago, and grew up with limited resources. Atwater’s decision to become a cop stemmed from his motivation to protect his little sister and brothers after losing their parents to the prison system. And while cops aren’t always respected, Hawkins and his castmates portray the kinds of cops they all can look up to. “Being from Chicago forces everything to resonate,” he says. “Most of our stories hit home enough for me to pull powerful personal references.” The actor promises nothing less than excellence when the show returns for its fourth season in September. Excited about the stories they’re telling, Hawkins also loves the camaraderie among his castmates. After all, he has always drawn inspiration from those around him. Actors like Eamonn Walker, Jason Beghe, Jon Seda, and Elias Koteas are amazing examples of the type of talent he’s surrounded by daily. “I’m blessed to be able to work with the dopest veterans in the game,” says Hawkins. While the show is his number-one priority right now, Hawkins knows he will continue to tell great stories and portray great characters as he moves forward in his career. “I hope that no matter what I do, my work inspires good vibes somewhere,” he says. “I have a vision of a pretty fun career.”

For a girl who didn’t set out to be a performer, actress Shalita Grant has achieved significant success on stage and on screen. During her sophomore year of high school, the Virginia native moved to Baltimore and auditioned for the local arts school. “I was too old and too late to audition, but the head of the program at the Baltimore School for the Arts gave me a shot,” says Grant. From there she was encouraged to audition for The Juilliard School in New York City, unaware of the school’s prestigious reputation. Accepted on a scholarship, the future actress’ life was about to change. “It wasn’t until after the first week there that I realized what had just happened to me, or rather, what I had accomplished,” she says. Her big break came when she appeared in the Tony Award-winning Broadway play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” In 2013, she was nominated for her first Tony Award for her role as Cassandra, the psychic cleaning woman.

CANDICE PATTON

“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Those words, spoken by her father, ring true for actress Candice Patton, best known for her role as Iris West on the CW’s hit show “The Flash.” With a desire to act since childhood, Patton grew up watching “I Love Lucy” and idolizing Lucille Ball. “I knew I wanted to entertain like her – to make people feel as good as she made me feel when I would escape into her show every night,” says Patton. Following a brief stint on “The Young and the Restless” while still in college, Patton has worked steadily ever since, earning guest-starring roles on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” and “The Game,” to name just a few. In 2014, she landed her first series regular role on “The Flash.” “It was my goal for a long time to book a long-term contract role on a show,” says Patton. “When I got the call from my manager, I fell to my knees – mostly out of sheer relief that I had reached that goal.” When auditioning for a part in the series based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Patton didn’t know much about “The Flash” specifically, as she was more of a Batman fan growing up. “To prepare for the part, I read a few of the comics to get a feel for the tone of this world and the characters, but a lot of my creation of Iris came from the scripts,” she says. “I didn’t want her to be a carbon copy of the comics; I wanted her to feel real to me,” says Patton. For fans of the series, it’s obvious that

Iris West is no damsel in distress – she’s a strong woman who can clearly hold her own. “She’s positive and hopeful, and I love that she’s not a superhero,” says Patton. “But that doesn’t stop her from wanting to help and do positive things for her community.” Iris West is also the long-time best friend and love interest for Barry Allen (aka The Flash). As a reporter at Picture News, she helps Team Flash protect Central City and the world. “I love the loyalty and deep connection she has to Barry,” says Patton. It’s something fans of the couple will get to see more of this season, along with the introduction of new villains. And while Patton and West both assert themselves and are clear about what they believe in, the actress says her character is a lot more fearless and self-assured than she is. Patton’s future aspirations include focusing on film, both independent features and blockbusters. “I’m excited to eventually move into that world when the timing is right,” she says. “I’d also love to develop projects later in my career and be at the helm of making creative and diverse decisions in Hollywood.” As she moves forward, Patton admits it’s not easy to choose that “one moment” in her career that has been defining. “There have been a lot of cool moments, but in the same breath, all of it feels right,” she says. “I have a lot of gratitude for where I am and how far I’ve come. Somewhere deep inside I know that I was destined for this journey.”

Once she wrapped up her run on stage, the actress took a leap of faith and left New York City for Los Angeles to forge a career in television. Judging from her role on the hit CBS show “NCIS: New Orleans,” the decision to move was the right one. Joining the popular franchise in a recurring role, both the character and Grant caught on with viewers and the powers that be. So when the show returned for its second season, Grant was promoted to a series regular. “I found out the news my last day on set and I wasn’t sure if it was really happening, but I was over the moon that they really wanted me on the show,” says the actress. In her role as Special Agent Sonja Percy, Grant has been able to put her strength and fitness to use. Her character is smart, tough, sassy, and bold, which sometimes gets her in trouble. “Part of her learning curve is being a member of a team and asking for permission rather than apologizing,” she says. Early in 2016, Grant also starred in the first season of the PBS Civil War miniseries “Mercy Street.” Portraying an escaped slave who was brutally taken advantage of pushed the actress to places she hasn’t been artistically since she was at Juilliard. “It meant a lot to me to tell her story, especially because the resilience of black women is not often portrayed in such a compassionate light,” Grant says. “It’s always a privilege to tell a three-dimensional story.” Along with acting, Grant is passionate about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Not only is it beneficial for her body, but focusing on strength training also allows for less use of a stunt double. “There’s so much more I can do without one, and it’s so empowering,” she says.

As the daughter of military parents, Floridaborn actress Erica Ash never spent much time in one place. So after graduating from college, she decided to spend a year in Japan before starting medical school. Her time of self-discovery altered her life’s course, as it was then that she discovered performing arts as a career. “I’ve always been a bit of a ham,” says the actress. “It’s just the personality I was born with.” After a brief stop in Los Angeles, Ash settled in New York City. Her early work included the final season of “MADtv” as well as the Broadway National Tour for both “The Lion King” and “The Color Purple.” The actress made her Broadway debut with “Baby It’s You!” “I was an original cast member,” says Ash. “It was my face on the buildings and billboards, and my voice on the original cast album.” With

aspirations to revisit the stage at some point in her career, she says, “Broadway has not seen the last of me for sure.” Since 2013, the actress has appeared in two hit TV shows – “Real Husbands of Hollywood” and “Survivor’s Remorse.” On “Real Husbands of Hollywood,” Ash says she has been blessed to work with some of the funniest names in comedy, spending her days with seasoned professionals who help her become a better comedic actress. “I get a free comedy show every day and I get paid for it,” says the actress. “I’ve always learned best on the job, and I could not have asked for better teachers.” Her character, Bridgette Hart, is the fictional ex-wife of actor and comedian Kevin Hart. She’s a hustler who is not only crazy, but also gets a ton of laughs. “She’s everything my mother and father raised me not to be!” jokes Ash. Bridgette is the type of person who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and Ash is enjoying the opportunity to play such a character. “I have the excuse, ‘Because it’s my job,’” she says.

The show is a parody of reality TV, a phenomenon audiences can’t seem to get enough of. “It’s a form of release for people,” says Ash. On “Survivor’s Remorse,” the actress is enjoying a completely different type of role, one in which she is able to dig deeper creatively. Her character, Mary “M-Chuck” Charles, is multi-dimensional and cynical – she says whatever is on her mind, much like the actress herself. “We’re both ballsy, but my character takes everything a few steps further than I would,” says Ash. Basketball superstar LeBron James is one of the executive producers of the show, something Ash says is “epic” for both the show and for her, especially after he led his team to victory this summer, breaking a 52year no-championship streak for Cleveland. “It figuratively and literally lets me know how close I am to greatness,” she says. A beautiful and talented actress, Ash believes it’s how you feel that radiates beauty. “If you sell it, people will surely buy it,” she says. “I am happiest when I am living an optimal healthy lifestyle.”

At an age when most girls are playing dress-up, actress Lori Loughlin, popularly known as “Aunt Becky” on the hit ‘90s sitcom “Full House”— and its recent resurgence, “Fuller House”— had a strong idea where she was headed.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL “My gateway into acting was the modeling world,” says Loughlin. At 11 years old, she accompanied a friend to an open casting call and walked out with a modeling contract. The Long Island native credits her parents for being so supportive of a career they knew little about. “At first my mom thought I was just a kid talking when I said I wanted to be an actress, and I’d outgrow it,” she shares. “I didn’t though; I was always consistent.” Only the Beginning Loughlin’s strong determination is evident when looking at her extensive resume. After getting her foot in the door in print ads and then commercials, she landed her breakout role on the soap opera “The Edge of Night.” “That role made people aware of me,” she says, “not just with fans of daytime TV, but people in the entertainment industry as well.” One of the industry people to take notice was Jeff Franklin, the creator of “Full House.” She joined the show in season two, and was under contract for only six episodes. But from her first day on set, Loughlin knew she’d be on for however long it ran. “I remember calling my mom and telling her, ‘If this show is successful, I’m going to be staying on it.’ And I did!” Her character was the missing link that completed the cast’s family circle. Her rapport with fellow cast member and onscreen love interest John Stamos (“Uncle Jesse”) resonated with the audience. “John and I had really good chemistry and I think the fans wanted to see us together,” she says. The reason for the show’s success was twofold: Not only was it a fun, lighthearted program, but it also consisted of a talented group of actors who truly bonded. That closeness came across on-screen, and people wanted to spend time with them each week. “I think the combination of both is what made it so successful,” says Loughlin. The show was such a hit that 21 years later, the cast reunited in the reprise, “Fuller House.” Gearing up for the second season on Netflix, audiences are again enjoying characters that feel like family, proving that after many years you can go home again. Though the actors remained close through their years apart, stepping back on that stage again for the first time was emotional and also surreal, shares Loughlin. “It was a little bit of an out-of-body experience,” she explains. “Even though we stayed in touch, we hadn’t worked together, so you had to keep pinching yourself and

Life After “Full House” When “Full House” ended in 1995, Loughlin’s star continued to rise with projects like “Summerland,” which she starred in, co-created, and produced, and “90210,” a spin-off of the iconic ‘90s hit show “Beverly Hills, 90210,” as well as other roles. In addition to the second season of “Fuller House,” set to return next year, the actress is busy with many other projects. She currently stars on Hallmark’s Movies & Mysteries channel in the “Garage Sale Mystery” series. Their newest movie, “Garage Sale Mystery: The Art of Murder,” will air this coming January. The series is described as a throwback to TV shows like “Murder, She Wrote,” “Columbo,” and “McMillan & Wife.” Loughlin was a big fan of those shows because they weren’t violent in nature. They were more of a good old-fashioned mystery, containing positive elements of family, friendship, intrigue, and, of course, a good puzzle to solve, she says. While the original plan was to film just one movie, Loughlin knew after reading the script that there was potential for more. As it turns out, her prediction was right; they’ve currently produced a total of seven movies and are contracted for four more. “I never dreamed we’d end up doing a dozen of them,” says the actress. “But they’ve done extremely well for the network and I just love doing them.” Another role she’s enjoying immensely is her character Abigail in the period piece, “When Calls the Heart” on the Hallmark Channel. The family drama series was inspired

by the book penned by Janette Oke as part of her Canadian West series. Loughlin portrays a widow in the early 1900s who lost her husband in a mining accident. Due to that tragedy, she becomes a symbol of strength and hope for others in their town. “Abigail is the moral compass; she’s very grounded and centered, the voice of reason,” says Loughlin. “It reminds you of ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ It’s about love, family, community, helping one another, triumph over tragedy — all the elements that make for an interesting TV show.” Loughlin says she was excited to do a period piece and was drawn to the project by the simplicity of the time, along with the heartfelt and uplifting stories they tell. “That seemed really cool to me.” The cast is currently filming their third season, set to air in 2017. Love and Family When she’s not working, Loughlin dedicates time to causes close to her heart. A big advocate for animals, she works closely with Much Love Animal Rescue in Los Angeles and films public service announcements for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). “I love animals and try to donate as much time as possible to help out wherever I can.” She is also an advocate for Charity Water, a privately funded charity that builds clean water drinking wells for villages in Africa. Their mission, to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person in the world. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Loughlin is helping to raise money that will go directly to the cause. “I met Scott Harrison, the founder, while doing a corporate job for Emergen C, the vitamin water supplement,” says the actress. “They have also partnered with Charity Water to raise money and awareness about the lack of access to clean water globally. The married mother of three (two daughters and a stepson) has always put family above all. Finding a balance was challenging at times, she says, but by only accepting jobs in the Los Angeles area, she had the opportunity to be hands-on when her children were younger. “When they were little I did not leave town for work,” she says. “Looking at my girls now, it’s evident my being present really shaped who they are today.” This coming November, Loughlin will star alongside her oldest daughter, Isabella, in the Hallmark Christmas movie “Christmas Makeover.” “This was her very first acting job and the first time I’ve worked with any of my children, so it was a lot of fun.” While both girls have expressed interest in following in their mother’s footsteps, Loughlin has shared with them some of the life lessons she’s learned along the way. “It’s not an easy business. You live your life like a gypsy, and if you’re down with that, that’s great,” she says. “It’s also about being a good person and not getting caught up in all that’s flattering. Keep it real and don’t be afraid to take hold of your own destiny.” B

would go into their mother’s boudoir, looking through all the beautiful bottles and scents. “We would have fun dressing up in her closet and spraying perfume on ourselves, and I told my mother one day I would have my own,” says Hilton. “Now I have 20 – it’s a dream come true.”

Fixtures in the world of entertainment, Paris Hilton and her family are no strangers to the media. Living life under a microscope is the norm for Hilton, whose life is constantly reported on, but none of that fazes her. In fact, what many people don’t realize is that the hotel heiress is more than just a socialite born into a wealthy family. She’s also a woman with business aspirations who is following in the footsteps of generations before her, including her talented grandfather and father. “I have incredible mentors in these men whom I’ve always looked up to, and I have always wanted to make them proud,” she says. Hilton has earned recognition in her own right as a TV personality, singer, model, actress, author, and DJ, to name just a few. It’s safe to say that this entrepreneur isn’t afraid to take chances. “Being born into my family, I feel that entrepreneurship runs in my blood.”

Following Her Passions

Born in New York City, Hilton split her time as a child between the East and West Coasts. These days, she spends a large portion of her time traveling the world for business, and right now she considers Ibiza her third home. “I’ll be there for the next few months for my DJ residency at Amnesia,” she says. Although she’s been playing different stages around the world for the past six years, Hilton didn’t just jump right in; instead, she hired the best people in the business to teach her the art of being a DJ. Her passion was sparked by an invitation to perform in concert, closing out for Jennifer Lopez. Hilton

says she fell in love with playing on the stage and knew it was something she wished to pursue further. “I’ve been going to Rebel [a former NYC nightclub] since I was 15 years old,” she says. “I have always loved dance music.” In 2014, she was named best female DJ at the NRJ Awards in Monaco. Though she plays many different places, Hilton’s favorite is her foam and diamonds party at Amnesia in Ibiza. “There is nothing like playing on that stage,” she says. In addition to achieving success as a DJ, the blonde beauty released her debut album, “Paris,” in 2006, and followed up shortly thereafter with a second album. Music is one of her true passions, and her hits have topped the Billboard dance charts. She’s currently working in the studio on her next album. “I love making music.”

Fulfilling a Childhood Dream

Music isn’t Hilton’s only passion, though. She also has her own fragrance line – something she’s wanted to create since she was a little girl. Her love of perfumes began when she and her younger sister Nicky

This past June, Hilton launched Gold Rush, her 20th fragrance. The inspiration behind her latest scent is the feeling you get when you meet someone new, that rush of love you feel, and that attraction that runs through your body, she says. “I want the women who wear my new fragrance to feel confident, beautiful, and sexy.” And while Gold Rush is just hitting stores, Hilton already has plans to release her 21st scent by the beginning of the new year. With so many different scents in her collection, it’s hard to choose a favorite. “I love all of my fragrances, but right now my favorite is Gold Rush; it’s my newest one and I receive so many compliments every time I wear it,” she says. “It’s my new favorite accessory.” As part of her growing empire, Hilton has parlayed her love of fashion and accessories into a growing business with a multitude of stores worldwide that bear her name – 50, to be exact! With everything from handbags and accessories to watches, shoes, and her fragrances, Hilton says she plans to open additional stores in the United States in the near future. As someone who has always had an eye for fashion, Hilton’s go-to designers include Balmain, Givenchy, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace. She says she’s inspired by style icons such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Victoria Beckham, and cites Beckham as someone whom she looks up to not only for her fashion sense, but also as a businesswoman. “I love her style and am impressed with the brand and the fashion empire she’s created for herself,” says Hilton. Hilton is passionate about what she does, and says she is driven by success and a deep sense of pride in her work. “I love what I do,” she says. “I’m proud of the empire I’ve built.”

Living in Front of the Camera

Before beginning her business ventures, Hilton started modeling at a young age and signed with Donald Trump’s modeling agency when she was 19 years old. From there she

began appearing in numerous TV and film projects, including a host spot on “Saturday Night Live” and roles in “Zoolander,” “Wonderland,” and “House of Wax.” Her breakout TV role came in 2003 on the reality show “The Simple Life,” alongside best friend Nicole Richie. The show was ahead of its time, and Hilton and Richie set the tone for a genre that would eventually take audiences by storm. Leaving behind all the trappings to which they were accustomed, the girls visited different cities where they tried to live “the simple life.” Throughout the series, viewers watched as the girls performed jobs as camp counselors, fast-food restaurant servers, and farmhands, and traveled cross-country on a Greyhound bus for internships on the East Coast.

With a good sense of humor about themselves and their public personas, Hilton and Richie had fun with the show and the storylines. “It was a lot of fun traveling with my best friend, experiencing new things together, and always laughing and having a good time,” says Hilton.

Creating a Legacy

In the fall of 2004, Hilton tackled another creative outlet, this time as an author. Her first book, an autobiography entitled “Confessions of an Heiress: A Tonguein-Chic Peek Behind the Pose,” reached number seven on the New York Times best-seller list. She followed up with a second book a year later, “Your Heiress Diary: Confess It All to Me,” and has plans to write a third. “I loved writing my books and am so proud to be on the New York Times best-seller list,” she says.

While Hilton has led a very public life, there are still a few things she thinks fans would be surprised to know about her. A self-professed tomboy, Hilton loves spending time outdoors. Whether it’s fishing, scuba diving, skydiving, or surfing, Hilton definitely considers herself a daredevil. “I even played on the ice hockey team in high school,” she says. No matter what the soft-spoken Hilton tries her hand at, she knows the support of her family is ever present. She credits her parents with instilling a sense of humility in her and keeping her grounded. The oldest of the four Hilton children, she recently became an aunt for the first time when her sister Nicky gave birth to a baby girl this summer. “I am truly at my happiest when I am surrounded by my family, my pets, and my loved ones,” she says. While few cities offer the kind of knee-jerk, uncompromising love of all causes green and good that Los Angeles does, it remains a shocking reality that those choosing to live without cars are viewed with very deep contempt. In

In the kingdom of the backhanded compliment, evil smiles replace spitting sneers as insults are delivered on the sly: When I first met you I never believed you’d be so successful, or I wouldn’t have the guts to wear that skirt if I were your size. And those barely scratch the surface. Absolutely no one ever says anything directly bad to anyone else’s face. Insults are either carefully veiled or delivered so far behind your back that you have absolutely no idea what’s going on or whom you can trust. This leads to intense paranoia and fear, which in turn leads to the insecurity necessary to continue insulting others in such a lily-livered way.


Nudity… In NYC

New Yorkers are certainly not prudes, but they generally see nudity as something reserved for the more intimate moments of life — places like a doctor’s office, deep inside a health spa, the shower, central booking, maybe even in bed (but not necessarily). No wonder clothing plays such a big role in New York life. Fashion Week suddenly makes way more sense.

In LA

Granted, when the sun shines for 12 months of the year, the temptation to disrobe is far greater than it is elsewhere, but in Los Angeles the social acceptability of nudity reaches a whole other level. Gyms, juice bars, parks, restaurants, concerts, movie premieres, supermarkets, weddings, funerals — you name it and there is someone attending with most of their “assets” barely covered. A problem? Not if you’re genetically predisposed to physical perfection or have mastered the art of eating tissues to stay thin.

Food and Eating... In NYC

Famous for some of the best restaurants around, New York also boasts some of the most varied and numerous street vendors anywhere. Any food from any spot on the globe is available at all times in the city that never sleeps, and a true New Yorker doesn’t waste time talking about calories or fat content. In New York, food is to be savored, enjoyed, and messily consumed. And when you have some of the best pizza, hot dogs, bagels, and cheesecake ever, that’s pretty easy to pull off.

In LA

Here, the more picky, annoying, or precious you are about what you choose to eat, the higher your personal status climbs. Low carb? Gluten-free? That’s so yesterday. Try pesca-pescatarian. That’s someone who will eat only fish that eat other fish. Without a doubt, behaving like a spoiled 4-year-old when it comes to the victuals placed before you is a sign of intellectual heft and new age insight. Food is about more than eating. It’s about evolution.

Exercise... In NYC

Gyms are the same all over, but New York adds in the real-life activities of regular, everyday walking: climbing upstairs, heading downstairs, dodging cars and trucks, fighting for cabs,

More akin to finding a religion, your chosen form of exercise goes beyond simply “burning calories.” Holistic regimes, quasispiritual retreats, or even physically demanding purges not attempted (on purpose) since the Middle Ages are de rigueur. In LA, sweat is for animals. True fitness is a state of being.

Earthquakes... In NYC

Consider for a moment that a huge part of the city exists above five stories. Then figure that something like an earthquake would pretty much present a clear and present danger to folks living in such locales. That makes a hysterical, screaming response to even the mildest of earth shakes a perfectly rational and totally appropriate course of action. Those who survive are often those who run the fastest.

In LA

When your entire city straddles a huge stretch of the San Andreas Fault and you’ve been experiencing quakes and their subsequent aftershocks for the better part of your life, any response to an actual earthquake — beyond rolling over and going back to sleep — will always seem like irrational overkill to a jaded local. STRIPED SALAD WITH HONEY BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE This is such a great way to serve a Cobb salad. It is easy to assemble and sure to impress! Serve it in as large a serving piece as you can find — these gorgeous colors need a giant canvas. You can really use any type of ingredients you like … add in diced ham, avocado, or anything else you love in a salad! 112 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE

PREPARATION

Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette ½ cup balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice 2 tbsp honey 1 cup extra virgin olive oil Salt and cracked black pepper

Vinaigrette Instructions: 1. Whisk vinegar, lemon juice, and honey in a medium bowl. 2. Gradually whisk in olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Salad 1 head romaine lettuce, chopped 1 large bag of mixed greens 3 tomatoes, diced into ½-inch cubes 1 can sweet corn, drained ¾ cup pine nuts 2 small red onions, diced 1 packet bacon, chopped 2 grilled chicken breasts diced into ½-inch cubes 6 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes 3 carrots, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes 2 cans cooked beets, diced into ½-inch cubes 1 cup crumbled blue cheese

Salad Instructions: 1. In a small pan, fry bacon until crisp. Remove from pan and let drain on a paper towel. 2. In a large bowl, toss the lettuce with half the dressing. Place your lettuce into your serving bowl or spread over a large, deep platter. 3. Arrange the rest of the ingredients in stripes along the salad. Try and alternate color tones so that the individual ingredients stand out. You can also put an ingredient all the way around the outside of the bowl like I’ve done here with the beets. 4. Serve with the remaining dressing on the side.

PREPARATION 1. Cut melon into bitesized pieces. 2. Roll up strips of the prosciutto. 3. Place a toothpick into each piece of prosciutto then add the melon. 4. Set on a plate, drizzle with olive oil, and crack black pepper over the top. 5. Garnish with basil and rose petals.

BLUEBERRY ICE CREAM There’s nothing better than fresh blueberries as summer winds down, especially when they’re bursting with flavor and blended into a rich, creamy, delectable ice cream! This is one of my favorite desserts — at our house we eat it all year long since it’s a great way to keep your summer berries on the table throughout the fall! Try it alone, on top of grilled fruit, or even in a fresh fruit sundae with layers of whipped cream, fresh berries, and berry purée. Enjoy!

1. Blend blueberries in a blender. 2. Add blueberry purée and sugar to a saucepan over a medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves (about 4-5 minutes). Don’t let it boil! 3. Refrigerate the mixture until cold. 4. Add in vanilla, salt, milk, and heavy cream; mix until combined. 5. Squeeze in lemon wedge and stir until combined. 6. Pour into ice cream maker and churn according to its instructions (usually 20 minutes on speed 1). 7. Freeze for at least an hour to allow your ice cream to set. 8. Enjoy with fresh blueberries! After a horrific bus accident, Troy left her job as a dress buyer in New York City to create an alternative healing group in Boston, where she researched organ functioning, nutrition, anatomy, and physiology. As part of the natural aging process, the skin and underlying muscles of the face and neck loosen and sag. Family Roots Kept Her “Real”

Even though she became an international model at age 15, Swan attributes her Midwestern upbringing (she grew up outside of Detroit), fused with her mom’s European influence, for keeping her so grounded. A ONE-DAY BREAST CANCER TREATMENT SUCCESS STORY By Sari Beth Rosenberg

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH AND THERE IS SOME EXCITING NEWS ON THAT FRONT. INTRAOPERATIVE RADIATION THERAPY (IORT) IS A ONE-DAY TREATMENT CYNARA COOMER, M.D., FACS, CHIEF OF BREAST SURGERY AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE FLORINA RUSI- MARKE COMPREHENSIVE BREAST CENTER AT STATEN ISLAND UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, HAS USED IN TREATING MORE THAN 100 PATIENTS, INCLUDING BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR, CARLA DIMAGGIO. What is IORT?

Based on a technique originally developed at the University of College London in 1998, IORT is an electronic form of targeted radiation treatment that can treat early-stage breast cancer patients in one day. And studies show IORT offers a number of benefits for patients, including added convenience, reduced costs, fewer side effects, and shorter treatment times than traditional external beam radiation. Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is equipped with the Xoft®

Dr. Coomer explains, “IORT allows breast surgeons to work together with radiation oncologists in the OR to precisely deliver a single dose of radiation at the time of lumpectomy while the patient is still under anesthesia.” Coomer continues, “For women whose cancer is stage 1 or 2 that has not progressed to the lymph nodes, this procedure can allow them to return to normal daily activities within days, rather than weeks, as is the case with traditional treatment.”

The Perfect Candidate

When survivor Carla DiMaggio first learned she had breast cancer, she was terrified about both having the disease and undergoing the rigors of traditional radiation. She had already watched four of her seven aunts succumb to breast cancer and witnessed others grapple with the difficult side effects and costs of radiation treatment. “In addition to the physical challenges, they also had to face significant financial costs, inconvenience, and emotional challenges as a result of having to visit a treatment center every day for several weeks,” recalls DiMaggio. That’s why she was intrigued to learn from Dr. Coomer that she was “the perfect candidate” for IORT. In January 2015, Carla went to SIUH for the outpatient surgery. Dr. Coomer used the Xoft System to administer the targeted dose of radiation in as little as eight minutes, immediately following Carla’s lumpectomy. When Carla woke up from surgery, she felt an overwhelming sense of relief. “It just felt great to know that my entire course of treatment was over. I was home that same day and felt great! I spent that evening visiting and playing cards with my sister and granddaughter!”

Facing the Unthinkable

In 2012, John and Sarah Bartosz lost their son Jack, just a few months shy of his 10th birthday, to cancer. Diagnosed at the age of four with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, Jack endured countless surgeries, treatments, and clinical trials, all with the hopes of beating the disease. Despite everything they did, it was a battle they couldn’t surpass. Upon learning they were out of options, the Bartoszs were faced with the difficult task of breaking the news to their daughter Annie, Jack’s twin sister. The loss left Annie with questions. How was this possible when Jack was considered a survivor, having lived more than five years beyond his diagnosis? “After six years and 11 months of battling the disease, he was still considered a success story even though the disease was always present,” says Sarah Bartosz. Armed with the belief that something had to be done – not only to create new treatments, but also to elevate awareness

of the need for support for families affected by childhood cancer – Annie suggested that she and her parents create a foundation. The couple spent months talking to their daughter about what it was she hoped to achieve. “Having just lost our son, we didn’t feel we were in a position to dictate to her what we should do,” says Bartosz. “She was quite insistent and we wanted her to feel a sense of ownership. We hoped it would help with her grief and healing.” After seeing the world turn pink in October for breast cancer, Annie was determined to do the same for pediatric cancer. With gold the designated national color for childhood cancer and September (the 9th month) being National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, G9 was born. Accompanying her twin brother around the country for various treatments put Annie in the unique position of meeting other children battling cancer. It also gave her a firsthand view of the impact the disease has on patients and families, and the pressing need for advancement in the field.

Watching their young daughter take action left the couple feeling bittersweet. “As parents, we were in a position to grieve one child, but also allow our other child to flourish and blossom,” says Bartosz. “How do you juxtapose this overwhelming grief with overwhelming pride?” Six and a half months pregnant with their son Tommy at the time of Jack’s death, Sarah also wanted to do something to make the world a better place, not only for her own kids, but all children.

Turning the World Gold

G9 became a registered charitable trust in 2013. The foundation’s mission is focused on taking action and moving the needle further for pediatric cancer. Statistics indicate 80 percent of children will survive childhood cancer, but that number is based only on that five-year benchmark. “There are 69 on average life years lost when a child dies from childhood cancer,” says Bartosz. “It’s completely unacceptable.” While at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the family worked with others to collectively help fund the development of a new treatment and were successful in doing so. “It gave us the momentum to know that change can happen on a grassroots level, but we shouldn’t have to rely on the families fighting cancer to find and fund new treatments,” she says.

“My daughter Annie summed it up best to a room full of people when she said, ‘We can’t rely on the families fighting if we are going to win this war – that’s like sending the wounded in to fight the war alone,’” says Bartosz. As a fundraising organization, G9 has put their stake in the ground to raise funds to support Early Phase Clinical Trials and assist in the development of new, less toxic treatments. Currently, there are only 27 hospitals in North America that can offer Early Phase Trials, and the foundation is providing funding to assist all of them. They’ve also received support from Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In 2011, Jack had the good fortune of meeting the football star and an immediate friendship blossomed, one that lasted throughout Jack’s short life. In 2014, #itsAaron, a web-series created by Rodgers to highlight local organizations doing good work in the Milwaukee area, featured G9. “Aaron really helped to put us on the map and generate the kind of awareness we needed, which was wonderful,” says Bartosz.

As the family continues in their efforts to raise awareness about childhood cancers and change the conversation, Bartosz is adamant when she says cures, along with safer treatments, must be discovered for both pediatric and adult cancers. Statistics show that 95 percent of childhood survivors will have a life-threatening side effect by age 45. That statistic became a reality for the family when they suffered another devastating loss this past March. John, at the age of 47, passed away from the aftereffects of the treatments he received in his early 20s when he, too, had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. “My husband quite literally disintegrated from the vast amount of radiation he was given that was supposedly his cure,” she says. It’s difficult to fathom that the treatments available are the very same ones that ultimately could do harm. “As parents we are put in a nowin situation, knowing the only option we have to help save our children is this horrible, toxic therapy that they might later pass away from,” says Bartosz. With the help of a nation united in gold, the goal is to give people a sense of hope, not just to survive, but also to thrive. This month they will be using the hashtag #growGOLD in their efforts to increase awareness.

Pergament has been one of NY1’s star reporters and anchors from the very beginning, and her credentials are as impressive as her refined and professional TV manner. Her undergraduate degree is from Duke University, and she holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. In other words, Annika Pergament is the total package! Pergament and I first met when she was guest anchoring at Court TV. Back in the day, Court TV shows were quite lengthy, which gave us the unique opportunity to get to know each other. This was one of the perks of my job for which I am truly grateful. Clearly, I’m not the only one impressed with Pergament’s talent. In addition to her role as the senior business anchor for NY1 and Charter Communications’ other news channels across the United States, she also leads the news business coverage from the New York Stock Exchange.

When did you know you wanted to be a TV journalist? It very much flowed from my love of history, and wanting to be in a place where I could witness and report on current events. When I was a history major at Duke I used a lot of primary source material to learn about how events were covered at the time. For example, when I was studying Nat Turner, the leader of the 1831 slave insurrection in Southampton, Virginia, I read the original transcript from “The Confessions of Nat Turner,” which inspired William Styron’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It took me back to that time and gave me an insight into how recording events can be skewed by bias. After college, I began freelance writing for a small Los Angeles paper and had a wonderful mentor there named Ed Boyer. My assignments took me into pockets of the city I’d otherwise never have learned about and I loved it. This experience helped confirm for me that I wanted to be a journalist, so I decided to go to graduate school and got a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern. What do you find the most rewarding aspect of your job at NY1? What might surprise people about your job there? NY1 is a special place. I started as a political reporter, then moved to the Manhattan beat, and now cover business, so it’s the kind of environment where you can take risks and try new things. The most rewarding part is seeing how hard everyone works to keep New Yorkers informed on a wide variety of subjects. Since we are a 24-hour news channel, we have the ability to spend more time on a variety of topics, from theater to politics to education and business. We can really explore what’s behind the headlines. Viewers see the final product that hits the air, but I think they would be surprised at the amount of effort it takes from an army of dedicated people behind the scenes to make that a reality.


Who or what inspires you these days? I’m inspired by people and companies who have the courage and vision to take a fresh look at how we live, work, and eat. For example, WeWork is totally transforming how we think about the workspace. Impossible Foods is trying to create a plant-based version of beef that is better for your health and better for the environment. I really admire entrepreneurs who are socially conscious. I think that many of the things that we take for granted today may be radically different in the next five or 10 years. In addition to being an anchor for NY1, you’re also a wife and mother of two young boys. How do you balance it all? What’s your secret? I feel very fortunate. I have a job I love and my schedule allows me to be home in the afternoon when my boys come home from school. I try to exercise every day and catch up on sleep on the weekends. There’s no secret. We all lead busy lives; you just make it work. Your fans probably already know this about you, but you’ve been in quite a few movies and a couple of TV shows, too. Do you have a favorite movie or show that you’ve been in? Did you get to meet the stars when you were taping them? It all started with “The Sopranos,” and that remains my favorite. Georgianne Walken cast me as a reporter in the first season and I went on to do 17 episodes. David Chase, the creator of the series, was very kind and supportive. James Gandolfini was a fan of NY1 and he loved to talk about the latest news stories. I’ve had the opportunity to do a number of movies and TV shows, and it’s always fun. I had a role in the movie “Broken City,” and had one of those incredible New York City experiences by getting to shoot a scene with Kyle Chandler, the star of “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline,” twotemp of my favorite series. On the personal side, it’s helping to raise my boys so that they are welladjusted and prepared to thrive in their lives. On the professional side, I want to keep working on interesting stories, meeting inspiring people, and to keep challenging myself. Any advice or parting words for people who want to venture into the world of TV journalism today? TV journalism has been very rewarding for me. You need to be able to work well under pressure, be able to distill complex subjects into something viewers can understand, and be willing to work hard with demanding hours. Journalism is changing rapidly with so many new platforms, but in the end it’s all about telling a story. That’s what drew me to journalism in the first place and it’s what drives me to keep getting up at 3 a.m. B
