FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
ello summer … oh, how I’ve missed you! My favorite issue of the year is done and in your hands, and I couldn’t love it more!
First, let me start with the amazing Robin McGraw, who is gracing the cover of our annual Hamptons issue. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Robin in her stunning Beverly Hills home when I was in LA in May. During our interview I honestly felt moved by the experience. You would assume someone of her stature would be a bit closed off to a journalist, but she had me at “Hello.” A self-professed “Dr. Phil Show” fan, I have watched Robin time and again display grace, composure, and strength as she has listened, spoken to, and given back to the millions of viewers who look to her as a role model. Robin thought it was funny I called her a role model, as she is just as humble as can be. She genuinely cares about helping people get back the beauty in their lives, which we agreed was synergistic with BELLA’s message. As you read her interview, I know you will be as awestruck with her as I was. She’s truly a woman on a mission who has her priorities in life straight: God, family, and giving
back. Although she may not personally feel like a “role model,” she is someone I look up to and aspire to be more like. On the topic of aspiration, the fabulousness doesn’t stop there! We gave ourselves a bit of a makeover (I love makeovers!), and the look and feel of this issue is our best yet. Inside we have everything you need to live your most BELLA life this season — summer beauty, fashion, and wellness tips; travel destinations for ultimate summer getaways; our annual Best of BELLA, where we chose our top 17 places to wine, dine, stay, and explore; and an amazing six-page feature with the female cast of one of my favorite Bravo shows "Odd Mom Out.” And that’s just a sampling — take a peek, and get lost in the beauty of summer. I’ll see you again in the fall, with our new LA edition in hand and with lots of pics and updates from our 4th Annual Hamptons White Party in August — my favorite BELLA party of the year! Enjoy your summer!

THE STYLE REPORT STYLE PROFILE

TRACY MARGOLIES, CHIEF MERCHANT, SAKS FIFTH AVENUE UPON READING OVER HER LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS, DEDICATION IS ONE WORD THAT COULD BE USED TO DESCRIBE TRACY MARGOLIES. BUT TAKE A DEEPER LOOK INTO HER LIFE AND CAREER PATH, AND YOU’RE SURE TO AGREE THAT MARGOLIES IS ACTUALLY A SECRET WEAPON. EVER SINCE HER DAYS AT UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, SHE KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE A FASHION BUYER. SHE’S SINCE BECOME ONE OF FASHION’S MOST AUTHORITATIVE VOICES OF HER TIME. BELLA’S FASHION DIRECTOR MARCUS STEWART CAUGHT UP WITH MARGOLIES TO CHAT ABOUT SAKS, THE CREATION OF 1022-SHOE, AND WHAT’S NEXT FOR THIS BUSINESS CHAMPION.
34 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
How did you get involved in the fashion industry? Ever since I was in college, I wanted to be a buyer. While studying psychology at the University of Maryland, the idea of buying intrigued me – it seemed fascinating, yet challenging. At that point, I didn’t know much about the field or exactly what it entailed, however, my curiosity compelled me to take a chance. That led to internships in various retail stores. What is the role of a chief merchant? As chief merchant, I oversee merchandise selection for all channels as well as lead the strategic product direction for Saks Fifth Avenue each season. What would you say has been instrumental in creating a great track record for you and your lasting success? I constantly challenge myself to discover new and emerging fashion in order to stay true to our customer. During market, I aim to secure exclusive and unique product that can only be found at Saks Fifth Avenue. Ultimately, it’s about providing an outstanding, unparalleled selection and experience for our Saks customer.
Your role seems to have a nice right/left brain balance. What areas of your career are business centered and what parts are creative centered? On the business side, I develop and implement merchandising strategies and initiatives to deliver the right products to the right places for our clients while cementing and enhancing Saks Fifth Avenue’s competitive position. On the creative side, I work with cross-functional teams to surprise and delight our customers through exclusive events and experiences, creative brand campaigns, advertising, and social media. You have had a working love affair with Saks for some time now and at this stage you have many career options. What keeps you interested in creating magic there? Saks Fifth Avenue is constantly evolving. We’re growing rapidly and investing in key areas of our business, from the redevelopment of our New York flagship to our entry into Canada. We’re opening new stores and making major renovations to existing stores across the country. Saks is a very exciting place to be right now!
What does Saks Fifth Avenue mean to you? Saks Fifth Avenue is an iconic New York institution. For me, having grown up just outside the City, Saks was always a magical place synonymous with fashionable, gracious living. Today, I am proud to be part a company with such a rich history.
of great style, whether that’s a bold statement piece or a classic staple.
Do you believe that one can truly have it all? What is your definition of having it all? I do believe it is possible to have it all, depending on how an individual defines that. Personally, I’m committed to balancing work and life priorities. I’m excited to come to work every morning to face new opportunities and challenges, but I also value time outside of work with family and friends.
What’s next for Saks? We have many exciting things happening at Saks, including the amazing renovation in my hometown at Saks Walt Whitman. Not only are we celebrating 10022-SHOE, but we are also celebrating the renovation of the first floor, which will debut in the fall. Additionally, Saks continues to expand with new store openings, including Waikiki, Hawaii, Brookfield Place in downtown New York, and Greenwich, Connecticut. Saks Greenwich will feature three new store concepts – jewelry, contemporary women’s ready-to-wear, and a stand-alone 10022-SHOE, the very first for Saks.
How did footwear and accessories become the driving force of most fashion brands? Footwear and accessories have evolved into driving forces within the fashion industry. For me, adding a shoe or handbag to my denim and blazer outfit instantly changes my look from business casual to evening in a matter of minutes. The best thing about accessories is no matter what size you are, they always fit and I think we can all appreciate that!
What is a day in your life like? Take us with you from sun up ‘til sun down. No two days at Saks Fifth Avenue are ever the same. During market season, I travel to view new collections and select merchandise for our 40 doors and Saks.com along with my team of merchants. When I’m not in market or attending fashion week in New York, London, Paris, or Milan, I’m in the office meeting with vendors or visiting stores and discussing what is next for Saks.
How did the concept for 10022-SHOE come about? Did you realize it would become as famous as it is now? Prior to my current role as chief merchant, I was vice president of women’s footwear at Saks for seven years. As VP, my team and I saw the growing demand for shoes and bought aggressively to meet it. With this came the realization that we did not have a dedicated environment to showcase the shoes. Ready-to-wear had its own floor in most department stores, but none of our competitors had a floor solely featuring shoes.
What keeps you motivated and focused? For me, it’s about the 3 P’s: people, passion, and product. I’m also highly competitive — continuing Saks’ reputation as a fashion leader keeps me motivated!
When planning started, we decided the shoe floor was so big that it needed its own zip code, and 10022SHOE was born. Today, with the addition of Saks Walt Whitman, 10022-SHOE lives in 22 Saks stores. I am so proud of how 10022-SHOE was embraced nationwide and very excited about the concept’s continued growth. What gives a shoe or a bag the “Saks” stamp of approval? Saks Fifth Avenue is a premiere luxury retail destination; our customers expect our assortment to push them beyond their fashion boundaries and ensure they are on the forefront

Who is your style idol, and why? I’m obsessed with Sarah Jessica Parker’s flawless personal style. Whether she’s in a ball gown or jeans and a t-shirt, she has a quirky elegance that inspires women to have fun and take risks with fashion. What was the turning point in your career when you realized that you were becoming not just a successful career woman but also a respected force? Becoming a manager and providing assistance to my team, from resolving issues to coaching and counseling. My peers appreciate my expertise and trust my advice. I truly enjoy being a mentor. Name one thing career wise and personally that you wish to achieve in the future? Currently, I am happy and appreciating the present. I have been fortunate to experience great opportunities and successes thus far in my life, and I only hope it will continue as such in the future.

DEAR FASHION DOCTOR, I’m a 35-year-old S&S woman, which stands for Single & Successful. That seems to be an epidemic in NYC, but I won’t bore you with a “Woe is me” story. I’m a therapist by day and part of my job is to be realistic yet optimistic with my patients. DEAR SINGLE WEDDING ATTENDANT, I love your attitude! You seem full of life and very optimistic, which in my experience is important to living a successful life both professionally and personally. Let’s jump right into it …
Bag Add some personality to your classic look with this bold, brass crossbody clutch. Pair this item with wide leg jeans and a t-shirt for a downtown funky look! #Versatility Dress Nothing says classic fun like a ruffled hemline! This dress is proper enough for weddings yet transitional enough to be worn out for a casual chic dinner paired with jeweled flats.
Weddings can be a constant reminder for a single gal of what she may be missing, but when you are dressed well and feel great about yourself, that wedding invite does not seem so scary after all. The key for you will be to wear something that does not scream, “I’m single!” Elegance is always the best option.
SUMMER STYLE SECRETS FROM DESIGNER LISA SHALLERGOLDBERG
Opt for a dress that is shorter with a flirty hemline. Not only is this on trend, but a shorter dress is always a great idea for summer weddings because you will get more wear out of the garment after the “I Do’s” are done.
Lisa Shaller-Goldberg, founder of Minnie Rose Cashmere, shares her secrets for luxurious summer style.
Also remember to have fun with your jewels. Don’t be afraid to add statement pieces that’ll give you that glam look you want! And heels! The higher, the better! Go for a single sole strappy heel. A metallic sandal is always a great idea for a summer luxe look. Have a look at my prescription for you! Signed,
The Fashion Doctor
What are some new styles we can expect to see this summer? Our Summer collection is focused on color. I was inspired by the colors of Burano, Italy, and our line is comprised of rich tomato, limoncello, persimmon, mint, and pink lace. The collection features whisper-light cotton tunics and kaftans that pair perfectly with a bright bikini or with a simple tank for a night on the Italian coast. You can never have too much… Jewelry. I vividly remember my grandmother always wearing a large charm bracelet. I always loved the sound it made as she walked around. Now I am the owner of that bracelet and cherish it as my good luck charm. What are your main fashion/style inspirations? It doesn’t come from any one place. Living in NYC and having children exposes you to new things every day. Do you have a favorite piece in the collection that you are wearing? Anything that is a kaftan, and of course, I love fringe. To view the entire collection, visit MinnieRose.com. BELLANYC.COM 37

The allure of gentle breezes, rolling dunes, and sparkling waters brings me back to The Hamptons season after season. My casual-chic East Coast look comes together with a classic high-waisted bikini, espadrille wedges, and a popof-color accessory. Add a dust of shimmering powder to give skin a golden glow in the soft summer light. The key to taking this look from day into dusk is having a comfy sweater to throw on!
Sun-filled summers in Southern CA call for plenty of beach time. My laid-back West Coast look comes together with a halter top and shorts paired with gold sandals and a dab of sparkly lip gloss. A fun tote is essential for the extras like sunnies, snacks, and that fashion mag you can’t put down.

“Stila Eyes Are The Window Shadow Palette - Spirit is my favorite palette to use for day and night! I like to use Oasis for under my eyes instead of a heavy liner, which is good for day or night. At night, I add Kitten in the inner corners of my eye and darken my shadow with the same colors I use under my eye.” $49, StilaCosmetics.com

BEAUTY SCENE TREND ALERT BLUE IS BACK! By Rachel Paul
BLUE EYE MAKEUP WAS POPPING UP ALL OVER SPRING/ SUMMER 2016 RUNWAYS — MISSONI, ROKSANDA, MARC JACOBS, PHILIP LIM, DIANE VON FURSTENBERG, AND JENNY PACKHAM, TO NAME A FEW. IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH TO CONVINCE US OF BLUE’S RETURN TO THE SPOTLIGHT, CHANEL SENT THEIR MODELS DOWN THE RUNWAY WITH A BANDIT MASK OF BLUE EYESHADOW. So, what’s so great about blue? Blue looks great on every skin tone. Depending on the application and specific shade, the intensity is easily adjustable for any comfort level. Blue will make the whites of your eyes appear brighter, creating a well-rested look.
THREE SIMPLE WAYS TO WAKE UP YOUR MAKEUP WITH BLUE: 1. Step out of the box. The easiest way to join the fun
is to swap out your black eyeliner for a blue one. If you can’t imagine parting ways with black, start slowly with a midnight or navy shade, which will add a touch of brightness without being obvious. Chances are that most of your friends won’t even notice something is different. Ready to take a bigger leap? Go for a cobalt or jewel-toned blue to really make a statement.
2. Stay low. Lining the bottom lashes is a great way to get your feet wet without fully committing to the trend. Use a thin liner brush to dust the blue of your choice under the lashes, starting from the outer corner, then work your way in. Be sure to wiggle the brush right in between the lashes so there’s no gap between the lashes and the pigment. Kick up the drama and make it pop by choosing a shade that contrasts with your complexion, wetting the brush, and drawing a thicker line. Look at you now!
3. Go all in. Want more blue? Use a tight brush to
concentrate the color on the lid, starting at the base of the lash line and slowly blending into the crease. Always (always!) use an eyeshadow primer to get the true shade of shadow and to prevent it from migrating throughout the day. Take note from the radiant Kate Bosworth and Alicia Keys.

HOW DO THE STARS GET THEIR SKIN SO SPECTACULAR THEY SIZZLE IN EVERY SEASON, ESPECIALLY SUMMER? SHHH… WE SCORED SECRETS FROM SKINCARE EXPERT DEBORAH DEPIANO. IN HER 20-YEAR CAREER AS A WEST HOLLYWOOD ESTHETICIAN, SHE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TREATED THOUSANDS OF CLIENTS, INCLUDING CELEBRITIES AND VIPS. “Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin,” says DePiano. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. “If you have severe scarring and tissue damage, I have seen some remarkable before and after’s – but only with someone very skilled who works in a doctor’s office.” Tip: You can experience the benefits microneedling at home by using a DermaRoller device. “Look for 0.20 or 0.25 (needle length),” DePiano advises. “It’s great to use before Growth Factor Serums for deeper penetration.”
We’ve all heard how coconut oil is great for your hair, skin, and body. One of he best properties of coconut oil, points out DePiano, is its longevity. “When you apply it on the skin, it can work for a longer time, unlike many other oils. Due to the presence of medium chain fatty acids, the fats eliminate the moisture loss through the pores.” DePiano’s top choice: Skinny Coconut Oil. “It’s the only 100 percent raw, alkaline coconut oil in the world.” She also recommends Dr. Bronner Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Whole Kernel: “It’s very light and a little goes a long way. Apply ½-teaspoon to face and neck, massage well, and then apply your skin block.” Tip: Remember: The products you apply to your body go into your system, so make sure they are as pure as possible, says DePiano. CUT & COLOR Which style, cut, or color is really hot right now? Any upcoming hair trends we should know about? Ombre is out, and “Bronde” is really hot right now. It’s not quite blonde or ombre; it’s more for brunettes who aren’t able to commit to a full blonde head. Bronde leaves them with fabulous hair and is the perfect way for people to go lighter without taking the huge step of bleaching their whole head. It’s flattering on almost everyone and is very low maintenance. Bronde gives you just the right amount of a sunkissed glow for the summer. Also, another upcoming hair trend that’s popular right now is collarbone-length hair, or a little below the collarbone. This hair length can be styled with very long layers that’s piecey with a little bit more shag.
TOOLS What’s the one must-have hair tool for summer? The José Eber wand for beautiful, beachy hair.
Summer heat and swimming can wreak havoc on our hair. What products would you suggest to restore moisture? Phytoplage Protective Sun Oil is amazing for the summer. Spray this oil in your hair before going in the water and it’ll protect against UV rays — and it’s waterproof! Phytoplage Shampoo and Conditioner are also summer musthaves because they eliminate chlorine and salt water from the hair. HELLO, BEACHY WAVES WANT GORGEOUS, WIND-BLOWN WAVES? HERE, JOSÉ EBER SHARES A STEP-BY-STEP:
PRIOR TO STYLING THE HAIR, APPLY KERASTASE NECTAR THERMIQUE, WHICH WILL PROTECT FROM HEAT STYLING.
TAKE JOSE EBER CLIPLESS WAND, DIVIDE YOUR HAIR INTO 1½-INCH SECTIONS, AND WRAP EACH SECTION AROUND THE CURLING IRON.
TAKE KERASTASE TOUCHE PERFECTION (A REPLENISHING BALM FOR DRY ENDS) AND APPLY IT TO YOUR FINGERTIPS, THEN RUN YOUR FINGERS VERY LIGHTLY THROUGH THE HAIR TO SEPARATE INTO NATURAL-LOOKING CURLS.

ALLY HILFIGER FIGHTING AN INVISIBLE DISEASE AND FINDING HER STRENGTH
UPON HEARING HER NAME, ONE CAN’T HELP BUT THINK OF THE BRAND THAT MADE HER FATHER, TOMMY HILFIGER, A HOUSEHOLD NAME. WHILE ALEXANDRIA “ALLY” HILFIGER GREW UP IN A WORLD OF FASHION AND PRIVILEGE, THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED WERE ANYTHING BUT GLAMOROUS. PAIN AND STRUGGLE MARKED MUCH OF HER CHILDHOOD, A TIME MOST ADULTS LOOK BACK ON FONDLY. By Alexandra Anastasio Photos: Douglas Friedman
ALLY HILFIGER @ALLYHILFIGER1 ALLY HILFIGER
THE NEW YORK LIFE As a child growing up between Manhattan and Greenwich, CT, Hilfiger dreamed of being on stage. Her love of acting and the movies were passions she would pursue later through various projects in front of and behind the camera. “My mother named me Alexandria because she had this vision of me becoming a ballerina and thought it would be a cool stage name,” she explains.
A BEAUTIFUL BEGINNING
With both parents possessing creative genes (mom Susie Hilfiger is creative director of Best & Co., a children’s boutique in Greenwich, CT), it was no surprise that Hilfiger also exhibited similar traits. “I truly have deep passions for all the creative areas,” she says, “I enjoy all forms of creating, from cooking, to putting clothing together, to singing, to acting and producing; it would be difficult to pick just one because I love them all . . . it’s fun to be involved in different creative outlets.” Hilfiger immerses herself entirely in each project she works on, and says they each provide something different. “They’re fulfilling in different ways, and I’m extremely lucky and grateful that I can explore all these outlets.” Her younger years were filled with opportunities that not all teens are as fortunate to experience. She produced various projects such as “Proud,” the true story of one of only two U.S. Navy ships with a black crew that saw combat in World War II, and “Rich Girls,” an MTV reality show. She also launched her own clothing line, NAHM, with fellow designer Nary Manivong, and worked alongside her father. “I feel like I went to university and graduate school by sitting around the kitchen table with my parents and going to their offices because they taught us so much; they still do.” Her input helped her father decide on the scent for the brand’s perfume, Tommy Girl. “I was always kind of an advisor to my father,” says the designer. He and I would sit down and choose fabrics, colors, and prints. We bounced ideas off of one another and collaborated creatively.”
Despite such wonderful opportunities, behind closed doors Hilfiger was a child struggling with debilitating pain. Bitten by a tick at age 7, the once happy and playful little girl began suffering the unimaginable. Tests for Lyme disease came back inconclusive and, while there were no medical signs pointing to the disease, her body began to betray her. Throughout the next 22 years she would experience symptoms such as extreme pain in her joints, severe headaches, weight loss, unexplainably collapses, and brain fog. It was a struggle both academically and socially. Misdiagnosed with a myriad of things from

growing pains to arthritis to fibromyalgia, Hilfiger saw countless doctors and tried everything possible to find the cause and some sense of comfort. “I tried so many different treatments that didn’t work,” she says. While feeling despondent, the one thing Hilfiger never did was give up hope. At 19 years old she finally received a proper diagnosis, but it would be another 10 years before her body began to feel healthy again. Upon receiving confirmation it was indeed Lyme disease that had stolen countless years, Hilfiger felt relieved. “I felt like I won the lottery because finally there were real answers and — I hoped — an easy solution.” Unfortunately, an easy solution to remedy the damage done to her body was not right around the corner. It would take another 12 doctors and countless more treatments that left her feeling sicker than ever before she saw the light at the end of the tunnel. “I never thought it was Lyme, I was really in the dark,” says Hilfiger. “When you go to the doctor you think they’re the ones who are correct but we weren’t educated enough around the disease.” Through the years of unexplainable pain, Hilfiger’s dream of becoming a mother and having a family kept her pushing forward. “That was the light at the end of my tunnel; I kept my eye on that dream and I didn’t let the tunnel go completely dark.”
RECLAIMING HER LIFE
In 2014, when her dream of motherhood became a reality, a pregnant Hilfiger made the decision to share her story and shed light on a disease that currently has no cure. She wanted to help others and be a part of finding answers. “I went from victim, to warrior to now a survivor.” “One of the most misunderstood things about Lyme is that it’s a lot more serious than people realize,” she comments. “Just because you start to feel better does not mean it’s forever and that’s what’s scary. You’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop.” With her new book, “Bite Me,” published this past May, Hilfiger didn’t hold back when detailing the roller coaster ride she’s been on. Brutally honest and raw, the first-time author opens herself up completely, inviting readers to see how dark and dramatic things

KEEP FIGHTING NO MATTER HOW BAD AND CHALLENGING TIMES GET.” became. “The book is not just for people with Lyme disease, but for anyone going through some sort of struggle.” Her advice? “Keep fighting no matter how bad and challenging times get.” She also suggests creating a spiritual toolbox to dive into when in need of support. For Hilfiger it was accumulating phone numbers of family and friends to turn to, adopting a healthier diet, enjoying nature, and meditating — anything that brought a sense of calm when the difficult times became too much. “Thank God I was able to gather different methods of pulling myself out of those moments and keep fighting.”
A NEW PURPOSE
In addition to sharing her story, Hilfiger committed to aiding in the fight for education and research. The Global Lyme Alliance, the largest non-profit for Lyme in the country, and Project Lyme, founded by Heather Hearst in 2015, a goal advocacy organization for prevention and early detection of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, are two organizations she joined. However, she makes it clear she will never limit herself to one charity alone. “I will support anybody who is fighting for Lyme.” A true New Yorker at heart, Hilfiger and her partner, along with their 17-month-old daughter, currently call Los Angeles home. Although she misses the city and its energy, right now a more relaxed and warmer environment is necessary. “I needed to be somewhere my body could thrive,” she adds. “But I will always be a New Yorker and hope to one day move back.” These days Hilfiger feels better than she has in a very long time and enjoys her role as a mother. “I wake up excited to get out of bed, hold my daughter, and see what she’s going to do that day,” says Hilfiger. “We have the sweetest little family and it’s just another reason to be healthy every single day.” B TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LYME DISEASE, VISIT: GLOBALLYMEALLIANCE.ORG PROJECTLYME.ORG ALLYHILFIGER.COM

FUSING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TO CREATE THE PERFECT SPACE By Alexandra Anastasio
INTERIOR DESIGNER CARRIE MCCALL HAS HAD A LOVE FOR FASHION AND A KEEN EYE FOR DESIGN SINCE CHILDHOOD. A 15-YEAR CAREER IN THE FASHION BUSINESS PAVED THE WAY FOR HER TO START HER OWN BUSINESS, CKM HOME DESIGN, FOUR YEARS AGO. “WORKING IN FASHION TAUGHT ME ABOUT COLOR, FABRIC, AND TEXTILE, SO IT WAS AN EASY TRANSITION GOING FROM ONE AREA TO THE OTHER,” SAYS THE DESIGNER AND LICENSED BUILDER, WHOSE BUSINESS IS BASED IN SUMMIT, NJ.
SOPHISTICATED SPACES HOME DESIGN
70 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
McCall has worked on everything from custom built homes in New Jersey, to a $2.5 million-dollar apartment in New York City, and is now gearing up for her next project, a home in Chicago. “By year’s end I hope to have a few states under my belt,” she says. BELLA New York sat down with the multi-talented McCall to learn more about how she fuses together her love of design and construction to create the perfect space. As an interior designer and a builder, what makes your company different than others? I always tell potential clients it’s better to pull me in earlier than later because if there is a construction element to the job I can work with the architect while the plans are being laid out. Having experience on both ends allows my clients to get the best of both worlds. Whether it’s a one-room renovation, filling an entire space with furniture, or a custom-built home, we can do it all. The possibilities are endless with design and construction. What are your design philosophies? I always try to fuse the old with the new, vintage with modern, and mix higherend pieces with more affordable furniture and accessories. I approach the design process with the thinking that this will last a long time, so I go for comfort as well. I like to bring one color throughout the home; without knowing, your eye travels from room to room, so there’s cohesiveness. And I always introduce candles – there has to be warmth and an inviting aroma in the home. I also love to use the color black. Everybody looks at white as a neutral but I look at black as a neutral and then add a pop of color. Things change seasonally, so black goes with everything. What advice do you share with clients when you begin working together on a project, big or small? A house evolves and it’s not going to be ready overnight. I let them know we’re going to be married to each other for a while. It’s a collaborative effort, and I am always accessible. As a designer what are your first steps? When I first meet with a client, I always look at what they’re wearing, their furniture, and find out what they want to do so I can get a sense of their style. I share the work I’ve done so they can get a sense of who I am. Then I’ll create a checklist of what they want to accomplish and a mockup of the budget. Since it’s a joint effort we’ll talk and come up with a plan together.
MY JOB IS TO PUSH [CLIENTS] SLIGHTLY OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE AND TAKE SOME RISKS. AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU WANT TO HAVE A WARM, INVITING SPACE TO COME HOME TO.”
Some clients leave everything in my hands while others want to be a part of the process. I love Pinterest and we create a lot of Pinterest and mood boards; that way, we can go back and forth and get an overall look together before we begin. My job is to push them slightly out of their comfort zone and take some risks. At the end of the day you want to have a warm, inviting space to come home to.
What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of the job? The most challenging part of the job is working with couples; whether it’s as a mediator, coach, or counselor, it’s helping them see the direction we’re going in and for both to be happy with what we’re doing. And the reward to all of this is when a client says, “Thank you – you did exactly what I wanted you to do.”
Any particular project that stands out for you as a favorite? On the design end, I’d say the apartment in New York City. It was the most challenging due to the quick turnaround that was required. After the seller closed we literally had four days to get everything ready before we handed over the keys.
This past June you launched your own TV show, “Design Talk with Carrie,” featured on Summit’s Home Town TV; what can viewers expect? We’ll be airing half hour episodes, once a month, where we introduce up-andcoming projects along with sharing tips viewers can apply in their own home. We’re also going to incorporate food and cocktail recipes, making it more of a complete lifestyle show. The show will be breaking down the walls of design and construction and because of my background I think it’s going to be unique and different. I love what I do and I’m super excited to take the business to the next level. B
From a construction perspective, it would be the house in Summit, NJ that I recently finished building. It’s the first custom design build home for CKM Home Design. I worked with the architect from scratch; we knocked it down and turned it around. I ran the whole project so it is near and dear to my heart.
SOPHISTICATED SPACES SPOTLIGHT Within a generation, his vision came to fruition: Harry’s son Bobby Zarin, and his grandson and company President David Zarin, joined the family business and developed it to include multiple storefronts on the Lower East Side, while positioning it as the go-to store for fabric, fabric supplies, and DIY re-upholstery tools. Bobby’s wife, Jill Zarin (one of the original “Real Housewives of New York City” for four seasons) is brand ambassador. A-listers like Taylor Swift, Jessica Lange, Emma Watson, and Roberta Flack have stepped through their doors, and their product has been featured on hit shows like “Madame Secretary,” “The Knick,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Girls,” and “Law & Order,” as well as many Broadway productions. Exclusively for BELLA, Bobby Zarin opens the doors of this three-floor fabric wonderland and shares the secrets of their longevity and success… Zarin Fabrics is about to celebrate its 80th anniversary. What do you feel has contributed to your success? There are many things, but I think the most important one is the people who work at Zarin Fabrics, many of whom have been here for over 20 years. They have the experience that cannot be replicated by hiring a designer who just graduated from school. This experience covers all aspects of the business, from choosing the right fabric for a particular project to ensuring that a custom window treatment or upholstery job is fabricated perfectly, which requires more knowledge than most consumers and even interior designers realize. ZARIN FABRICS, A LOWER EAST SIDE INSTITUTION, HAS DEFIED NEW YORK REAL ESTATE TRENDS TO CELEBRATE ITS 80TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. THE LARGEST PROVIDER OF DISCOUNTED FABRICS IN THE TRI-STATE AREA AND ONE OF THE LARGEST ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ZARIN FABRICS REMAINS A FAMILY-RUN BUSINESS THAT CONTINUES TO GROW AND EXPAND WITH EACH NEW YEAR. WHEN HARRY ZARIN OPENED THE BUSINESS IN 1936, HE OPERATED OUT OF A PUSHCART ON ORCHARD STREET ON MANHATTAN’S LOWER EAST SIDE WITH A VISION OF CREATING A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR ALL THINGS FABRIC-RELATED. 72 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
Do you have any special events lined up to celebrate the anniversary? We recently became the exclusive New York retailer for Robert Allen’s Madcap Cottage line of fabrics, and had the dynamo team behind the line, Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke, on hand for a launch party. Bringing a brand name into our famous fabric warehouse was a new concept for us, and our customers can expect more to come. We are also planning a fall event for our 80th anniversary! What’s the best part of running a family business? As a family business, we have the flexibility to work without constraints. This means we can bring in all sorts of wonderful fabrics even if they don’t fit within a certain line. This is a major reason why Bobby, Jill, and David Zarin so many interior designers, set decorators, and homeowners shop with us. The smart ones come to us first, but the ones who can’t find what they are looking for while perusing through samples at fabric showrooms will usually find something that works for them at Zarin Fabrics.
What’s hot right now? What emerging home decor trends are you seeing? In juxtaposition to each other, stark contrasting colors will be big — think blacks with whites. And on the other side of the spectrum, soft, soothing colors will dominate in homes and hospitality. Also, the use of fabric for window treatments is really showing strength. Instead of blinds and roller shades, we are seeing a big increase in the use of Roman Shades with draping covering the windows from wall to wall. Do you offer anything besides fabric? We do any custom work that utilizes fabric, from window treatments to upholstery and decorative pillows. We also have a full floor of upholstery supplies and decorative hardware for window treatments, including all track systems, which we can customize. We also opened a new showroom at 69 Orchard Street that contains a curated collection of furniture and home décor items.
Can we find current designer fabrics at your lower East Side fabric warehouse? Yes! In fact, many people who haven’t shopped with us SALON in a long time are surprised to see that while we still carry beautiful discontinued fabrics at very reasonable prices compared to fabric showrooms, we also have thousands of current, re-orderable designer fabrics. These fabrics can run up to $200 per yard, but are still relatively inexpensive compared to similar fabrics that one would have to order and possibly wait weeks for at the fabric showrooms. In the off chance one cannot find what they like in stock at our warehouse, we also have one of the largest libraries of fabric books in NYC. When you come to Zarin Fabrics you won’t have to go anywhere else! B

SUMMER STAGES THAT STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT By Barbara Bellesi
It’s called “Broadway in the Finger Lakes” for good reason: Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival (FLMTF) is the largest professional musical theatre organization in the state outside of Manhattan’s theatre district. Multiple venues make FLMTF a theatre lover’s dream come true. The Preston H. Thomas Theatre at the Merry-GoRound Playhouse is the site of main stage productions, while new works take flight at Theatre Mack, located in downtown Auburn. The festival flourishes further this year with yet another production at Rochester’s Callahan Theatre, located at Nazareth College Arts Center.
FLMTF is also home to the country’s largest touring company focused on youth education. When school is in session, the Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre visits schools in over 70 districts throughout New York State, bringing joy to more than 125,000 students each year. School might be out during the summer, but the show must go on: the troupe takes to libraries, parks, county fairs, playgrounds, and other recreation centers to keep kids entertained all year round.
What We’re Excited About
FLMTF also hosts “The PiTCH,” which is an opportunity for musicals in their infancy to take their first steps on stage. Located in the 80-seat Theatre Mack, the creative team behind each musical pitches their material to a live audience (how’s that for an audition?) and a dialogue ensues regarding the musical in progress.

THE LIGHTS OF BROADWAY SHINE YEAR-ROUND, BUT AS THE TEMPERATURES CLIMB, IT’S TIME FOR SUMMER STAGES ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO STEAL SOME OF THE SPOTLIGHT. IF YOU LOVE THEATRE AND ARE LOOKING TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE CITY FOR THE SUMMER, HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITE SUMMER THEATRE COMPANIES IN THE NORTHEAST THAT JUST MIGHT INSPIRE YOUR VACATION PLANS. While much of the season is dedicated to producing Shakespeare’s plays, Shakespeare & Company also presents classic and contemporary theatrical works, as well as new plays that reflect important socio-political issues. The result is a collaboration of some of the best, brightest, and most diverse theatre professionals who bring Shakespeare’s plays as well as his artistic values to the modern stage.

England might have been William Shakespeare’s home, but his spirit is alive and well in New England – Western Massachusetts, to be exact. Nestled in the Berkshires is Shakespeare & Company, one of the country’s largest festivals dedicated to the Bard. Since 1978, the town of Lenox, MA has been synonymous with Shakespearean theatre. Each season, over 75,000 theatregoers flock to Lenox, MA to revel in the handiwork of a company of over 150 actors, directors, designers, and more.
A new look for the Tina Packer Playhouse, named after the founding artistic director of Shakespeare & Company, promises a real thrill for theatregoers this season. “With a new in-the-round stage configuration in the Tina Packer Playhouse, we will offer greater intimacy between performers and audience,” said co-artistic director Jonathan Croy. “The actor-to-audience relationship will be 360 degrees, which presents an exciting new dynamic for both actor and audience—and this intimacy of the relationship with the audience supports dynamic personal interactions and our fascination with language.”

Williamstown Theatre Festival (WTF) has been Broadway’s summer home since 1955, beckoning many of the best actors, playwrights, directors, and designers to spend their summers creating outstanding theatre with the Berkshires as a scenic backdrop. For more than 60 seasons, WTF has produced classic plays and has served as the birthplace for the premieres of new plays and musicals. In addition to its main stage productions, WTF presents a variety of special events, including cabarets, workshops, readings, and a host of education programs for theatre students of all ages and experience levels.
With the exception of Tennessee Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo” (starring Marisa Tomei) and Wendy Wasserstein’s “An American Daughter,” all of the plays this season are having either their American or world premiere. First-time productions of this magnitude often call out the big guns when it comes to their casting, and this season at WTF is no exception: Jane Kaczmarek and Alfred Molina will be part of the American debut of “And No More Shall We Part.”

GETTING TO KNOW Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman was adopted at just 12 days old. He delved into the world of modeling at the age of 16, and then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia when he was 19 to further his career. While lunching with a friend in a downtown restaurant one day in 2006, he was approached by director Ron Oliver, who asked him to read for, “Shock to the System.” He auditioned the next day and was cast on the spot. BELLA caught up with the actor and model to find what he had to say about life and his growing career. Growing up in Rimbey, Alberta, what were some of the challenges you faced pursuing an acting career in a smaller city? It was something I always dreamed I would do. The logistics of it were kind of complicated because I really had no example to go by. I just had to dig my way through it and find my way, meet the right people, start the right conversations and ask the right questions. How did you get your start as a model? I was enamored by the world of fashion but the first time it was offered to me as an opportunity or even a possibility, I was 16. My eyes had gotten very bright and I thought this could be a way to get out, to broaden my perspective of the world, meet all sorts of people, and use that as a ledge to get into the world of acting.
THERE’S NOTHING UNREAL ABOUT JEFFREY BOWYER-CHAPMAN By Vanessa Coppes
YOU MAY KNOW HIM AS BRADLEY IN “DIRTY GRANDPA,” OR AS THE VOICE OF BLACK PANTHER IN “IRON MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.” BUT REALLY, THIS ALBERTA, CANADA TRANSPLANT HAS US GLUED TO OUR SEATS IN LIFETIME’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DRAMA, “UNREAL.”
78 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
There seems to be a diversity to the movies you’ve acted in — from mystery to romantic comedy to science fiction. What’s your favorite genre? I really like broad, raw comedies like “Dirty Grandpa.” It’s not necessarily my type of humor to watch, but playing that type of humor is so much fun. On the flipside, I really like doing darker dramas and comedies. I did “Dear Mr. Gacy” years ago for HBO, in which I played the role of a male prostitute who escapes. I read the biography of John Wayne Gacy, watched documentaries, and spent time with actual male streetwalkers and drug addicts in Vancouver just to see what a day in the life of a character like this would be like. As dark as that was, there was something so deeply satisfying about it that I loved so much. You’ve lived in both Canada and the United States. What is your favorite thing about each of them? There are certainly events that were shaped by my growing up in Canada and things that were shaped by the US — New York, specifically.
LAW THE WAY IT SHOULD BE PRACTICED We’re really blessed up in Canada, kind of sheltered in a way from things that seem simple but are actually very complicated, like gun control laws. We don’t have it at the forefront of our minds, like — “Is anyone carrying a gun? Could there be a potential of a mass public shooting?” When I spend time in major cities in the States, [however,] it’s very much at the forefront of people’s minds. It’s the same with gay rights. For as long as I can remember, it has been legal and broadly accepted [in Canada], so to come to America and try to comprehend the concept of things like gay rights has taken a long time for me to wrap my mind around. It wasn’t until I moved to New York that I realized how naïve I was in many ways.
MY EYES HAD GOTTEN VERY BRIGHT AND I THOUGHT [FASHION] COULD BE A WAY TO GET OUT, TO BROADEN MY PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD, MEET ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE, AND USE THAT AS A LEDGE TO GET INTO THE WORLD OF ACTING.”
Handling your case personally, compassionately and aggressively.
What’s your definition of beauty? Authenticity and light. Having voiced the character Black Panther in “Ironman: The Animated Series,” who is your favorite comic book hero? The Black Panther, T’Challa, of course! I was still so young when I got that job. I felt like it was the best and the worst of auditions. Wakanda — where Black Panther, T’Challa comes from — is not a real African country, so I had to go in there and kind of wing it with this weird, generic African accent. When I booked the role I was not familiar with the Black Panther, but I fell in love with him and started buying comic books and novels. Black Panther is a pivotal and groundbreaking character. To have a black male as a super hero, I can’t wait to see what he does next. What career goals are you focusing on now? Human rights is something I’ve always been very passionate about. To share my story and hopefully inspire others to share their stories and their truth is a message that is very important to me, and I would like to see spread far and wide. Aside from that I love the art of conversation, I would really like to start a podcast or an interview series. I’ve kept journals since I was about 12 years old; I just continued to go through volumes and volumes of them. My favorite types of literature that I’ve always been drawn to are memoirs and autobiographies. I would really love to compile some volumes of my journals into a memoir at some point. B

NYC SPOTLIGHT What was it like playing on the tour? It was fantastic, a great experience. I got to travel the world and played against people who were heroes of mine growing up. What were your most memorable matches? Six weeks into the tour, I won my first doubles title, which was really exciting. Also, playing against the famed doubles team of Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver, and playing singles against Chris Evert at Wimbledon was great. There was camaraderie on the tour back then. Zina Garrison became a close friend and mentor.
THE U.S. OPEN BEGINS ON AUGUST 29 AND WILL RUN THROUGH SEPTEMBER 11. FIND OUT MORE AT USOPEN.ORG.
What led you to the USTA? After my career ended I worked as a National Coach for the USTA for four years. I then wanted to give back to the sport as a volunteer and was asked to be on the board of the USTA. That’s where I began to understand what the USTA was all about.
What was your biggest initial challenge at the USTA? There have been several challenges since I arrived. The inclusion of the Hispanic community in the country has been one of our main goals. Also, only a small percentage of the 350,000 high school tennis players are playing junior USTA matches after their season ends. We want to increase that by creating options for these players to still compete in a recreational format year-round. Another challenge has been to increase the integrity of the game among young people by teaching them the importance of sportsmanship.

FOR KATRINA ADAMS, IT’S ALL A RACKET SUCCESS JUST DIDN’T HAPPEN UPON KATRINA ADAMS. SHE EARNED IT THE GOOD OLD-FASHIONED WAY — THROUGH HARD WORK, PERSEVERANCE, AND A PASSION FOR HER PROFESSION.
Her prowess on the courts began while attending Northwestern University, where she majored in communications. While there, she helped the Wildcats win Big Ten championships in 1986 and 1987. She was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rookie (ITA) of the Year in 1986 and an NCAA All-American in 1986 and 1987. Also in 1987, she became the first African-American to win the NCAA doubles title.
By Roger Sands
Adams played on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour and was ranked as high as No. 67 in singles and No. 8 in doubles. She captured 20 career doubles titles and reached the quarterfinals or better in doubles at all four Grand Slam events. Her best Grand Slam singles result was reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 1988.
In 2015, after a successful career on the tennis courts and a decade-long climb up the United States Tennis Association (USTA) ladder, Adams became the first African-American and first former professional tennis player to serve as the association’s chairman of the board, CEO, and president. The USTA oversees the US Open in Queens, NY, the highest-attended sporting event in the country each year.
While an active pro, Adams served on the board of directors of the WTA as a player representative for four one-year terms and on the WTA’s Players Association for five two-year terms. After leaving the tour, Adams was a USTA National Tennis Coach from 1999 to 2002. She joined the USTA’s board of directors in 2005, serving as a director at large and as the association’s vice president and first vice president.
80 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
How can you grow the sport? Has the USTA made any special accommodations to assist young ones with learning how to play the game at their level? The creation of the shorter court and lower net helps kids learn the game more easily and has been extremely successful at clubs across the country. Also, our player development program at the USTA has been doing a great job of developing highly skilled young players. We currently have a number of young men and women who are ranked in the Top 100 in the world. What does the US Open mean to NYC? It means everything to New York. There’s a real excitement and buzz created throughout the city. Hotels and restaurants are packed with people from around the world. Describe the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program. I’ve been involved with this program for 10 years, which helps support young people in underserved communities. Our goal is to assist these kids and help them reach their highest potential through tennis, character building, and education. Some eventually earn college scholarships. What do you like about NYC? What’s not to like about New York? Everything happens here with its diverse cultures. I enjoy going to the theater. Also, the USTA is based in White Plains, so I have the best of both worlds. What are your future plans? I always want to make a difference, so I’ll continue my relationship with Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program, and I might get back into doing some commentating for television, which I enjoy. B

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
HER TIME TO SHINE
WITH A PASSION FOR THE ARTS SINCE CHILDHOOD, DANCER-TURNED-ACTRESS ROCHELLE AYTES HAS BEEN HEATING UP THE SCREEN ON ONE OF SUMMER’S HOTTEST SHOWS. NOW IN ITS FOURTH SEASON, ABC’S “MISTRESSES” HAS CAPTURED AUDIENCES WITH ITS STEAMY DRAMA AND ROMANCE. By Alexandra Anastasio Photography: Rowan Daily
Before she set her sights on Hollywood, this native New Yorker was committed to a career in dance. After graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, the performing arts school depicted in the hit ‘80s TV show “Fame,” Aytes went on to the State University of New York at Purchase, where she graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in dance. From there she performed and toured with Ballet Hispanico and the Broadway show “Aida.” It was during “Aida” that Aytes caught the acting bug. From there the desire to pursue this creative outlet blossomed, and, as she says, “I haven’t looked back.” While taking acting classes and immersing herself in the craft, the triple threat got her first break – an episode in season 6 of “Sex and the City.” “At that time I was auditioning for commercials, doing print modeling, and anything else related to the business to get comfortable in front of the camera,” says Aytes. While the part on “Sex and the City” was small, it was her first speaking role and it gave her a foot in the door. Two years later Aytes was cast in the 2004 Wayans brothers’ comedy, “White Chicks,” which she says was her breakout role. “It was my first movie and I was elated, scared, and shocked at the same time,” she says. While she found it difficult to wrap her mind around all that was happening – she questioned whether she was ready for it – she says her faith in God and her belief that people are never given more than they can handle convinced her it was her time to shine.
A RISING STAR
Ready or not, Aytes’ star continued to rise and her career took off, both in film and on TV. She starred in Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Family Reunion” and has appeared in such hit shows as “NCIS,” “Bones,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “The Forgotten,” to name just a few. After working on a number of TV series, Aytes was cast as one of the four leads in a new drama series, “Mistresses,” which began airing in 2013 on ABC. The show is centered on the lives of four women and their complex relationships, and Aytes’ character has seen her fair share of drama these past three seasons – from a dead husband who turned out to be alive, to that husband’s mistress and their love child.
UP CLOSE & PERSONAL “My previous role was a detective on a show called ‘The Forgotten,’ which was very serious; this gave me an opportunity to play and have much more of a personal life,” says Aytes. “When I first read this script I thought it was fun; I loved the character and how quirky and awkward she was.” She describes her character, April, as a loving, devoted single mom who can be a bit neurotic but always tries to do what’s right, even though she fails at times. “April is often the victim of lies and deceit, but over the course of the show she’s proven to be strong and resilient,” says Aytes. In the fourth season, fans can expect to see Aytes’ character start to find real happiness and explore new creative outlets. “April has had to deal with a lot, but continues to learn and grow. There’s no time to wallow in a dead husband or his mistress, but finding comfort in the arms of a certain man usually helps with that,” teases Aytes.
I AM DEFINITELY A STRONG AND DETERMINED PERSON WHO BOUNCES BACK WHEN I’VE BEEN HURT. NO MATTER WHAT THE STRUGGLE, WE BOTH COME OUT BETTER ON THE OTHER SIDE.”
While the actress doesn’t confront the same types of drama her alter ego encounters, she does see similarities between herself and April.
“I am definitely a strong and determined person who bounces back when I’ve been hurt,” says Aytes. “No matter what the struggle, we both come out better on the other side.”
TRANSITIONS & CHALLENGES
In addition to appearing on “Mistresses,” the hardworking actress also pulled double duty on “Criminal Minds” as the love interest to Shemar Moore’s character. Fortunately, the shows filmed at different parts of the year so she didn’t have to shoot two shows simultaneously. Aytes admits it was challenging at times to transition from one role to the next, especially after having played the same character for the past few years. “That’s why I think it’s important to keep working on different characters so you don’t get stuck,” she says. “When you find yourself at the end of a character’s journey and have to audition all over again…you are in for a rude awakening.” Though her time on “Criminal Minds” ended earlier this year when Moore left the show, Aytes says she wasn’t surprised by the news. “I was sad to see him go, but after 11 years on the show I totally understand someone having the desire to express themselves in another way,” she says. “We’re all artists and have the need for change.” She recalls her time there as wonderful, and credits the cast and crew for making the experience a memorable one. “They’re a well-oiled machine over there,” says Aytes. The show was completely different than what the actress had been doing, which is one of the things she appreciated about it. “I love to change things up; it’s what challenges me to be better.” Aytes also challenged herself creatively by portraying reallife pop and contemporary singer/songwriter Perri “Pebbles” Reid in the VH1 film “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” in 2013. A fan of TLC growing up, Aytes admits she felt pressure when portraying Pebbles.
84 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
“I knew how much of an honor it was to be part of the film, and I absolutely wanted to do this character and person justice and give depth and humanity to the role.”
Though Aytes’ work on “Criminal Minds” has wrapped, there still isn’t much downtime in her schedule. Along with working on “Mistresses,” she’s also taken on another big project: wedding planning. After becoming engaged last summer to her longtime partner, she says she can now add the title of producer to her resume. “One of my married friends said to me when I got engaged, “Congratulations on your first production!” When she’s not working or planning her wedding, Aytes enjoys decorating and designing her new home. “They’ve become new hobbies of mine,” she says. Looking to the future, Aytes has her sights set on more films. “Dancing in a movie is still my dream, but an action hero would be fun, too,” she says. “I would also love to go back to Broadway at some point.” A return to the stage would bring Aytes back to New York, a place she says will always be home. Because she’s been in Los Angeles for more than a decade, frequent trips home are what keep the actress and her family connected. “I’m truly bicoastal and would surely miss New York if I didn’t go back as much as I do,” she says. Happiest when she is fully living out her purpose, Aytes stays grounded by keeping good, honest, and loyal people in her life and putting God first. That, she says, “will never change.” B

Robin McGraw THE ULTIMATE ROLE MODEL OF STYLE, GRACE, AND GIVING BACK By Courtenay Cooper-Hall Photographer: John Russo Hair: Mimi Vodnoy Love Makeup: Cool Benson Wardrobe Stylist: Fiona Gebreselassie
When it comes to living your best life, Robin McGraw is front and center, creating a legacy for her family all while doing it with grace and style. A woman who holds an array of titles — wife, mother, grandmother, philanthropist, entrepreneur, two-time #1 New York Times best-selling author, and TV personality — McGraw is warm, caring, and has chosen a path working to help those in need, as well as serve as a role model for women all over the world. McGraw holds her relationship with God and her family at the forefront of her life, and has found that strength and a revelation from childhood have enabled her to become the woman she was always meant to be. “When I hear the words ‘role model’ I think ‘Oh no,’” she says. “I cannot believe anyone would call me that.” Feeling fortunate to be where she is right now, the humble McGraw sees herself more as someone who has a lot of people watching what she does, and believes it’s important to show her true, authentic self at all times. Here, McGraw shares with BELLA what drives and inspires her…

Not Perfect, But Perfect Together
Married for 40 years, McGraw has always believed she was put on Earth to be a wife and mother. Together with her husband, Phillip (better known to most as “Dr. Phil”), the couple raised two sons, Jay, 36, and Jordan, 29, and are also proud grandparents to Avery Elizabeth, 6, and London Phillip, 4½. While the couple made it a priority to create memories that would last a lifetime for their children, they have also set forth the best example of a happy marriage. “It’s kind of crazy that it’s going on 40 years,” she says. “Sometimes it feels like yesterday – we have a lot to be proud of.” In order to achieve a happy and healthy marriage, McGraw credits the fact the couple did their homework first. “Early on, we spoke about what we could and could not live with,” she says. She grew up in a home with an alcoholic father, so she knew that was not an environment she wanted for herself or her future family. “I would not live with, nor would I raise children, in a home with an alcoholic,” she says.
Welcoming the Spotlight of Scrutiny
Through her experiences have come life lessons that have guided McGraw both personally and professionally. “I have learned that if I don’t step up and defend what I know to be true and right to protect my family, no one else will,” she says. It’s a lesson that has proved helpful ever since her husband began his popular daytime show in 2002. While going from a normal home life to being thrust into the spotlight may seem like a tough transition, McGraw looked at it as a huge, positive change. A daily presence on “The Dr. Phil” show, McGraw knows there are people who will want to judge, criticize, and say hurtful things despite not knowing who she really is. “But that’s okay,” she says.
EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO THEIR OPINION AND TO SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE A RIGHT NOT TO REACT.” “Everyone has a right to their opinion and to say whatever they want, but you also have a right not to react,” she says. “I think to myself, say whatever you want, I know the truth,” says McGraw. She credits her husband for teaching her this lesson very early on in their marriage. And while McGraw says he never “Dr. Phil’s” her, it has been the best advice she’s ever received.
Following in Her Mother’s Footsteps — Almost
McGraw, who encourages others to follow their passion, leads by example for the millions of women who look up to her. Her own inspiration comes from her mother, who unexpectedly passed away from a massive heart attack at the young age of 58. McGraw recalls her as an amazing woman who always put her family’s needs above her own, including her health. “I truly believe that if she had gone to the doctor just one time, she might still be here.” Her mother’s passing was a wake-up call to ensure she, too, didn’t perpetuate a legacy of self-neglect. From that day on, McGraw made it her mission to take care of herself so she could, in turn, take care of the ones she loves. “I want to be just like her in every way but that one thing,” she says.
THE ONE CONSTANT THING I KNEW I COULD COUNT ON WAS MY MOTHER, AND THAT SMILE SHE WOULD HAVE ON HER FACE. IT DIDN’T MATTER HOW SCARED OR UNCERTAIN I WAS, IF SHE WAS SMILING, IT COULDN’T BE THAT BAD.”
From Uncertainty to Smiles
In the 14 seasons of the “Dr. Phil Show,” McGraw says the guests that move her the most are the victims of domestic violence. “The stories we’ve heard are heart-wrenching,” she says. “You can’t listen to a woman or a man talk about this and not be so moved that you don’t want to do something.” The desire to help those in need led to the creation of a foundation she named after her mother, Georgia, who she credits with shaping her life. In October 2013 (Domestic Violence Awareness Month), McGraw launched “When Georgia Smiled, The Robin McGraw Revelation Foundation.” Shortly after, Robin introduced the “AveryLasting Love” lip gloss collection, named after her granddaughter, and the “Light of My Life” candle collection, named for her husband, Phillip, sons Jay and Jordan, and grandson, London. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the sale of the lip gloss and candle collections go to benefit and support the foundation. “Growing up with an alcoholic father, I lived a life of uncertainty,” she says. “But the one constant thing I knew I could count on was my mother, and that smile she would have on her face. It didn’t matter how scared or uncertain I was, if she was smiling, it couldn’t be that bad.” It’s that same sense of safety and calm that McGraw wants to uphold. “That same sense of peace I remember from the smile on my mother’s face is what I want to bring to those who are suffering,” she says. With the launch of When Georgia Smiled, Robin introduced two powerful tools to assist: first, the “Aspire Initiative,” a free, interactive domestic violence curriculum to educate tweens, young adults, and adults about abusive relationships. The program is available in English and Spanish and is being used in schools across the country. The second tool, the “Aspire News” app, is a free, potentially lifesaving smartphone app that allows the user to create pre-written text or voice messages to be sent to designated numbers. The app has been downloaded more than 300,000 times around the world. “Phillip and I came up with the concept for the app while sitting around the kitchen table talking one morning,” says McGraw. “I told him I wish I could create a way for a victim to alert family and friends.” Launched in 2013, the app was recognized on Capitol Hill by the National Health Collaborative as one of the top two apps of 2014 most beneficial in the fight to end domestic violence. “I was so proud for it to be considered such a valuable tool in this fight against this silent epidemic,” says McGraw.
Ensuring Advocacy for Those in Need
As part of giving back, both McGraw and her husband are national spokespersons for the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA). Together, they are responsible for bringing in

more than 76,000 volunteers and donating 7 million+ hours to advocate for abused and neglected children. They’ve also raised over $90 million dollars in donations for CASA. “Without the CASA volunteers, most of these children go into the courtroom without anyone to stand beside them and help give them a voice,” says McGraw. “We’ve done a lot of shows on foster children who are abused, starved, tied up, or beaten, and it breaks your heart. They need someone they can talk to, someone they can tell the trauma they are experiencing and also share what’s going on in their daily lives.”
Aspiration and Faith
In addition to her philanthropic work, McGraw is also a best-selling author; both of her books have reached the New York Times bestseller list. “Both times I was told, I was surprised and extremely proud … it’s a feeling I will never forget.” As for writing a third, it’s something McGraw is seriously considering. “At this point in my life, at 62, I feel like I have more life experience to write about.” With a full schedule that only keeps getting busier, she makes it a point to take time for herself, something she says is important for women. “Whether it’s taking a bubble bath (my personal favorite), writing in a journal, or time spent in prayer, women need their own time,” McGraw emphasizes. With strong religious beliefs, McGraw says she trusts in the plan God has for her. Each morning and every evening, she reads a Bible verse she keeps framed in her bathroom, Luke 1:45. “What I love about the verse is that it’s about belief and trust and knowing He has made a promise to me. I just have to believe and I do.” McGraw, whose huge heart knows no limits, says she feels most beautiful when doing the things she was put here to do. “If I can reach out and help to change someone’s life by being who I am and helping in whatever way I can, knowing that I’ve done my best, that is when I feel beautiful.” B
McGRAW’S BEAUTY “REVELATION”
As a firm believer that it’s never too late to start something new, McGraw launched her purpose-driven lifestyle brand, “Robin McGraw Revelation” in April 2014 to record-breaking success. Her mission: To empower women to embrace their beauty, health, and happiness without guilt. The first product collection launched under the brand was skincare. “When I started, I knew I wanted something that would be easy to use and that worked,” she says. “I’ve had many people over the years ask what I do to take care of my skin so I wanted to create the same regime that works for me and that I believed in.” New luxury skincare products will be added to the Revelation collection this fall. Her newest line, Me O’ My, consists of nine fun and useful products McGraw says will make life a bit easier and glamorous for moms. With whimsical names like “Chickee Chew” (inspired by her love of bubble gum), “Handy Candy” antibacterial wipes, “Lippy Lovey” lip balm, “Dog-Gone-It” and “Owie-Meowie” bandages, “Nosey Cozy” tissues, “Flossy Glossy” floss picks, “Kissy Permissy” breath mints, and “Sticky Stackers” sticky note and pen sets, McGraw is gearing up to introduce even more items to this collection soon. In Manhattan’s prestigious Upper East Side neighborhood where the ultra-wealthy reside, it can be difficult for some to navigate among those who appear to “have it all.” From summer homes out east, to private jets, drivers, nannies, and exposure to the best of the best New York City and the world has to offer, the Upper East Side (UES) represents a life of privilege that might sound foreign, but does in fact exist for the privileged few. So much so that native New Yorker and lifelong resident of this prestigious zip code, Jill Kargman, together with the Bravo network, has created the hit comedy “Odd Mom Out.” Now in its second season, the hit TV show satirizes the world in which the one percent of New York City inhabits. As Kargman’s character, Jill Weber, struggles to fit into this lifestyle of perfectly coifed blond moms who seem to have a handle on everything, the show is relatable on many levels because everyone at one time or another feels like the “odd mom out.”

Comprised of a fabulous and funny cast, the women who personify these characters took some time to sit down with BELLA New York to dish about the show that’s given them license to create some truly jawdropping, laugh-out-loud comedy.
Surrounded by a world of excess, it might be surprising to know that writer-turned-actor Jill Kargman is having the time of her life sharing through comedy the hilarious and outrageous situations that have been her “norm.” While she’s ensconced in a world that can be quite crazy even to her, Kargman credits her parents for the down-to-earth childhood she and her brother experienced, as compared to some of the overthe-top lifestyles that surrounded them in Manhattan’s upscale Upper East Side neighborhood. “I feel like growing up in the 1970s it wasn’t the same level of conspicuous consumption that is it now,” says Kargman. “We learned to appreciate everything and were reminded of how lucky we were to eat out at beautiful restaurants and not have to worry about what to order,” she says.
“THE CHARACTER IN THE SHOW IS ME WHEN I WAS 28.” JILLKARGMAN @JILLKARGMAN JILL KARGMAN
That sense of appreciation and exposure to all the culture New York City has to offer is the same way in which Kargman and her husband have chosen to raise their three children, while still living in the neighborhood she grew up in. “We still don’t have a country house and I want to keep it that way,” quips Kargman. “I have no lust for a second home like most people in my neighborhood.

102 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
Instead, Kargman aspires to continued success. Even after graduating from Yale, where she was a part of the theater, becoming an actress was never part of her long-term plan. “It’s a career where you can have extreme talent and work hard and still not move up, and that to me is a frustrating path I wouldn’t have taken,” she says.
When Bravo originally approached Kargman, they wanted her in front of the camera but she made it clear that reality television just wasn’t for her. “I definitely did not want a camera following me around,” she says. After working through the logistics, they decided to create a satirical version of Kargman’s life with her as the star. “The character in the show is me when I was 28,” she says. In those early days, she felt isolated and vulnerable, especially while trying to navigate her way through the world of super-wealthy, over-the-top momzillas. And while the UES neighborhood provides Kargman and her team with an unending flow of material, she says the response from the moms has been nothing but wonderful. “I am really lucky I have cool moms in my school,” she says. “I’ve gotten nothing but high-fives.” Kargman is most proud of the fact that the show has garnered some pretty amazing guest stars. From Blythe Danner, Dan Hedaya, Drew Barrymore, John Hodgeman, Amy Sedaris, Molly Ringwald, and Meredith Viera, this group of all-star talent has her feeling proud. “They’re all in demand and they wouldn’t have done the show unless they responded to season one,” she declares. Whether Kargman plans to continue acting in the future is anyone’s guess; right now she’s focused on her show. “If the right thing came along, I would do it but I’m not trying to be famous.” When she’s not working, the mom of three spends time with her family and says that what makes her happiest is when they’re all together sharing a beautiful dinner. “I think ultimate happiness is the best accessory.”

“I FELT LIKE THE ODD PERSON OUT IN A LOT OF SITUATIONS.” LILCUTIEFOREVER @ELLIOTTDOTABBY
She’s wildly funny, but then again the comedic trait is one that runs in the family, so it’s no wonder actress Abby Elliott is making waves on-screen in “Odd Mom Out.” While she’s garnering laughs each week, Elliott says she didn’t set out to be a comedian. “From a young age I wanted to act, whether it was musical theatre, or dramatic acting; I just remember not wanting to do anything else,” she says. Her dreams of performing led to auditions at some of the most prestigious acting schools. But when she realized she was getting more laughs in her auditions than she probably should have, a conversation with her father – actor and comedian Chris Elliott – led her to try improv, which opened doors she might not have otherwise sought.
At age 16 she started traveling into New York City from her home in Fairfield County, Connecticut to pursue her career. She attended college at Manhattan Marymount but left after a month to move out to Los Angeles. “I was so eager to start working that I couldn’t stay put,” she says. In just a few short years she headed back to NYC to join the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” While the work she performed on SNL was mostly as an impressionist, she’s proud of her time there. “I have definitely grown as a result of the experience,” the actress says. Being on the 8H stage and performing for Lorne Michaels [SNL’s creator] was a career highlight that the actress will not soon forget. With her role on “Odd Mom Out,” the comedic actor is finally doing what she loves. As Brooke Von Weber, the quintessential momzilla who is highly-competitive within the uber-rich world she inhabits, the actress says her character is someone who really wants to have it all. “She’s obsessed with appearance and is completely self-absorbed,” she says. “But I think beneath all of that she is pretty insecure; the obsession with wanting to be perfect comes from a darker place.” Past experiences have also proved helpful when digging deep to portray a woman so vastly different than herself. Growing up in Connecticut as the daughter of an actor, Elliott felt different than her peers. “I felt like the odd person out in a lot of situations,” she says. “Wanting to go into acting professionally I think is pretty alienating and the whole essence of what our show is based upon, feeling like the odd one out.” With a moment to reflect, it’s clear the actress is taking her father’s advice, to make things as fun as possible. “He always told me if you’re not having fun then what’s the point,” she says. It’s clear that Elliott, who is happiest after she’s completed a successful day and gets to head home to her fiancé and family, is having fun. “I feel most beautiful when I know that I’ve done the best that I can.”

“IT WAS EITHER THAT OR A WAITRESS AT FRIENDLY’S.” KKGLICK @KKGLICK
For as long as she can remember, KK Glick has always wanted to be an actress. She recalls writing an autobiography in kindergarten stating her career ambitions. “It was either that or a waitress at Friendly’s,” she says. Without missing a beat, it’s that wisecracking sense of humor that has Glick winning over audiences as the funny and relatable ER doctor in “Odd Mom Out.” Although Glick has found her place among an all-star cast, the actress says she experienced a quick decade of rejection before landing her breakout role. While others around her were working professionally and building upon smaller roles, the future star was doing community theatre. And while she would have perhaps liked to have met Kargman a little bit sooner, she wouldn’t change a thing. “It was a slow build but it worked for me,” says Glick.
“I DIDN’T GO TO SCHOOL FOR THIS, I JUST OBSERVED, AND THANK GOODNESS I HAVE A GOOD EYE.”
Her first initial reaction when reading the material was that “this is laugh-outloud funny.” “The comedy hits you in the face,” she says. “It’s this over-thetop affluent world, but the way [Kargman] writes everything is extremely relatable.” According to the actress who is married but does not have children, you don’t have to be a mom on the UES to feel like the “odd mom out.” Glick’s character, Vanessa, is the antitheses of the crazy momzillas who inhabit the Upper East Side. “I love how calm, cool, and collected they write her,” the actress says. “It’s nice to play someone with a calm moral center because I’m more in the land of the neurotic New Yorker.” And while the two might have the same deadpan dry humor, Glick finds it funny that she’s playing a doctor when she’s the biggest hypochondriac. “I would be the worst doctor; it’s great to play someone so smart and grounded. I hope she’s rubbing off on me,” she says. When she’s not on set, Glick keeps busy studying her craft. “I still take acting classes between jobs, which I think surprises people,” she says. “I also love studying French and will be back in class soon.” And while she might be relatively new to audiences, it’s clear her aspirations to make a living from acting shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve. Glick’s not only having the time of her life, she has also taken the advice her mother once shared – “to stand up straight” – and put it into practice. “It’s all about having confidence, knowing who you are and being comfortable with it,” the actress says. “You can’t wait for your life to start until your dreams come true; be happy now.”
JOANNA CASSIDY @JOANNAVCASSIDY
Top: Ramy Brook
With an extensive resume of work under her belt, actress Joanna Cassidy has proven that you don’t necessarily have to start off early to be successful as a performer. Up until her mid-20s she didn’t have the slightest desire to become an actor. Modeling to support her two children, Cassidy heard about a movie being cast and boldly called up for an audition. “I just said, I think you should see me for this job, and I got it,” says the actress, who plays Candace Von Weber on “Odd Mom Out.” Up until that point, she didn’t have any experience except as an extra on a Steve McQueen film. “I didn’t go to school for this, I just observed, and thank goodness I have a good eye,” says Cassidy. “It takes a while to hone these skills although there are some people who right out of the gate — like Jill [Kargman] — just have it.” Since then the actress has been working steadily, with roles on TV in “Six Feet Under,” “Buffalo Bill,” “Body of Proof,” and in films such as “Under Fire,” “ Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” and “Blade Runner,” a film she credits as her breakout role. These days Cassidy is focusing on a much different genre with her work on Bravo. As the matriarch of the Von Weber family, her character Candace, while trying to convince everyone around her that she’s in control, is terribly insecure. “She’s really uncomfortable with herself but covers it up well.”
The actress credits this amazing character to the writers. “I think they’re rock stars,” she says. She also has a large amount of respect for her fellow actors, all of whom, Cassidy says, are perfectionists. “A lot of hard work goes into this and it’s far from effortless,” she says. In addition to her career on-screen, Cassidy has also made it a point to be involved in charitable causes close to her heart. She’s involved with Warriors and Wolves, a therapeutic program for returning combat veterans at the Lockwood Animal Rescue Center in California. “I really want to help raise money for the sanctuary,” says the actress. With longevity in a business that can be fleeting, Cassidy credits her success to not giving up or taking no for an answer. A spiritual person who takes time to meditate, she says as a single mother she had to work hard; nothing was ever just handed to her. “I made it happen because I didn’t give up,” she says. “I’ve been a very fortunate human being.”

Ten straight days riding a HarleyDavidson Dyna Wide Glide along classic Route 66. You’re heading to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the Black Hills of South Dakota, wearing full leathers and wraparound shades, and enjoying a lifetime experience you won’t soon forget.
How others see it
Folks were already concerned with the constant quotes from “Sons of Anarchy,” not to mention the deep depression you fell into when the series ended. Add in the leather chaps you recently started wearing to work, and suddenly your rebel holiday looks less like some weird biker fantasy and more like a specific club initiation. Watch closely for friends wearing a “wire.”
Vacation #2 The Missionary How you see it
THE VACATION EXPLANATION YOU AND YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER’S CHOICE OF VACATION SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU… AND IT’S NOT ALWAYS GOOD. By Jarrod Thalheimer
106 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
You’ve busted your hump at work for months (or, more likely, fooled around on Candy Crush as much as you could plausibly get away with) but that’s all done now. It’s finally time for a holiday! But you have to be careful. In a world that marinates in social media, anyone’s vacation plans become fair game for comment. In fact, whatever you and your honey do – and ultimately choose to share – will probably be judged far more harshly than you’d ever guess. See for yourself.…
Determined to give back, you scheduled two weeks to help people in a third-world country. Long days of building homes and digging wells in the hot sun will be followed by hard nights in bug-infested huts on thin mats. Comfort and treats may be at a minimum, but the personal rewards for your soul are limitless.
How others see it
Unfortunately, because you never fully grasped how much Facebook posting is too much, your “friends” have already had just about enough of your do-gooding. You’ve droned on and on for six months about how selfless and important this trip is and how much giving back should matter to them, too. That means any photos you post showing some trench you’ve dug or villagers you’ve helped will be received like fingernails on a chalkboard. Don’t be surprised if your snazzy BMW back home sees a few keys dragged along the side before you return.
Vacation #3 The Hedonist How you see it
Deciding to visit a famous naturist preserve was a lifelong fascination you simply had to explore. Sure, you’ve been uncomfortable with your own nudity for years – even in the shower – but a chance to overcome such a thing is positive growth. What a tremendous opportunity to refresh and improve your emotional well-being at the same time.
How others see it
Cheers to your personal growth, but you’d better skip the shoulder rubs you used to offer so generously around the office. Thanks to your, um… inspired choice of holiday, “desk massages” from you have now acquired a somewhat creepy connotation. Fair? Not by a long shot. BTW, you might want to cool it on pushing for an office volleyball team. Some things – even imagined – can’t ever be unimagined. Know what I mean?
Vacation #4 The Jock How you see it
Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to follow their favorite sports team for a whole two weeks? Great seats at super stadiums, pro jerseys, and tons of cheering – it’s an incredible chance to bond with fellow fans and share some of the realties experienced by professional athletes on the move.
How others see it
While friends may finally understand why you insist on painting your face in team colors at every opportunity, you are providing insight into your aggressive attitude on days your team wins and the petty outbursts you utter when they don’t. Expect either an intervention or a moratorium on discussing sports when you get back to the office.
Vacation #5 The Fanboy (Or Girl) How you see it
A solid week dedicated to everything Harry Potter – you get to dress in Hogwarts robes and enjoy the visceral magic of the films, brought to stunning life in one of the most amazing theme parks ever created. Riding the Hogwarts Express, munching on Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, and getting photos with a roaming Hagrid spell a magical adventure for your senses.
How others see it
While slightly charming at first, any grown adult over-identifying with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is clearly a problem. Things like insisting on “holding your wand” at all business meetings, dividing the doughnuts in the break room with a “sorting hat,” and making endless Slytherin jokes at your boss’ expense already had you marked for a sit-down with the company shrink. Enjoy your holiday because after this trip, the spell is officially broken.
Vacation #6 The Gambler How you see it
Everybody loves Vegas, and this trip was a great deal. Top-of-the-line shows, crazy-cool hotels, and more slots and blackjack than you can handle. It’s a great chance to blow off some steam and (maybe) win some cash.

All of the sudden, your constant attempts to bet on everything at work appear more worrisome. Also, weren’t you the one who handled all the cash in the March Madness pool? Without a doubt, asking the accounting department to look into the mathematics of card counting a week before you left was not the best idea. Expect to see some pamphlets from Gamblers Anonymous posted in the lunchroom.
Vacation #7 The Dreamer How you see it
You’re off to Burning Man, an annual gathering in the Nevada desert dedicated to the precepts of community, art, and decommodification. You’re looking forward to a week of artistic selfexpression and the giving of one’s unique talents for the enjoyment of all in a communal, non-commercial way.

While the folks at work learned to accept the hammock you replaced your desk with, they are having a bit more trouble with “no socks-no shoes Wednesdays.” Add to that the scents produced by your all-hummus diet and your idea to ditch the office radio in favor of a CD playing Native American chants on a loop, and your co-workers have reached the end of their collective rope. Fearful of appearing racist for opposing whatever comes next, they simply voted to close the business down before you return.

Vacation #8 The Millionaire How you see it
You’ve saved for almost 10 years to take the ultimate vacation: first-class air and five-star hotels combined with backstage passes and VIP entrances to only the best of the best. It was awful skipping vacations for a decade, but for the next two weeks, you will finally get to splurge and see how the one-percenters truly live.

This recent addition to Manhattan’s Lower East Side puts the trend in trendy. The rooftop locale, part of the Indigo Hotel, is certainly a spot that will give jaded New Yorkers a place to talk about. Adorned with comfy couches, high-top tables, and intimate lighting, Mr. Purple pays homage to the cool kid art scene vibe for which the LES is known. With two terraces, complete with a swimming pool and outdoor bar, it’s a no brainer to put your feet up, cocktail in hand, and enjoy the views here this summer. Tasty nibbles will keep you satiated as you cool off with one of Mr. Purple’s signature cocktails. We highly recommend the Beecher’s mac and cheese, which you will be dreaming of for weeks to come. A hidden gem in Manhattan’s lower east side, Red Compass is a familyowned eatery that serves up traditional Georgian and European cuisine. With influences from both Europe and Middle Eastern culinary traditions, guests will find the atmosphere intimate and cozy with live music on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Feast on traditional dishes from the different regions, and — for cheese lovers — Adjaruli Khachapuri is a must. With the use of traditional herbs and spices, Georgian cuisine is heavy on their meat dishes but offers a wide variety of vegetarian as well. A separate garden room features a touch of Georgia, from the clay pots used to serve meals to the large selection of wines in a winery-inspired room that’s the perfect option for private parties and special events. And with Georgia serving as one of the oldest wine regions in the world, wine tastings pay homage to the country and introduce their native wines and culture to NYC. -Alexandra Anastasio

Mind+Body “EVERYGIRL” COOKING (AND EATING!) ADVICE FROM MARIA MENOUNOS By Sari Beth Rosenberg
Multi-talented is an understatement when describing E! News anchor, Maria Menounos. She has already scored major success as a journalist, actress, radio host, producer, CEO, guest WWE professional wrestler … and now as a two-time New York Times bestselling author, thanks to her EveryGirl’s Guide series. The most recent addition, “The EveryGirl’s Guide to Cooking,” is a collection of 150 easy-to-prepare and delicious recipes. We got to talk to Menounos about how to make healthy choices and be a part of her EveryGirl lifestyle revolution.
HER EVERYGIRL INSPIRATION
When writing the cookbook for her EveryGirl squad, Menounos was inspired by her own life experiences and Greek heritage. She lost 40 pounds in college, kept it off, and still maintains her beautiful physique, despite her hectic schedule, thanks to the recipes she shares in her book. She explains, “The recipes in this book are literally what I eat every day.” From her tantalizing recipes for “Apple Pie Quinoa Porridge” to “Spinach and Walnut-Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms,” to protein-packed smoothies, Menounos has a difficult time choosing her favorite: “It’s hard to pick one. They are all my favorites!”
114 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
GIVE YOURSELF SOME WIGGLE ROOM
Gazing at her abs gracing all those magazine covers, it’s surprising to discover that Menounos allows herself cheat days. Here’s how she does it: • She follows the “75/25 Ruleâ€? by eating as clean as she can 75 percent of the time, then “leaving a little room for the rest.â€? Connect: MariaMenounos.com @MariaMenounos
Photos: Elise Sinagra
Menounos has surprising advice about dieting: “Don’t go on a diet! Instead, she suggests making small changes. Cut back a little in the beginning, she says, because “you’re still eating anything you want, just a little bit less. And, once that gets easy, Menounos says, “you do little bit more, and that accumulates. She lost 20 pounds in five months following this strategy. Additionally, she recommends keeping the whole process a secret: “I never told anyone I was on a diet, and I never told myself I was on a diet. It is the biggest tip ever, because [telling others] sets you up for failure.
• Because she’s staying healthy most of the time, she doesn’t feel guilty eating some of her “Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies with Toasted Pecansâ€? (recipe on page 208 of her book).
MAKE IT A LIFESTYLE
When looking to lose weight, Menounos explains, “it really is all about making those little changes, cutting back slowly, and feeling out what works for you. Since she has a family history of diabetes, the super-fit celeb has always been more concerned about being healthy, not skinny. “You really have to make it a lifestyle and it’s even more fun when you can do that with your partner and family.
THE HIDDEN HEALTH BENEFITS OF SHOPPING AT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS’ MARKET
WE GOT SOME HELPFUL TIPS FROM KRISTIN CANTY – FILMMAKER, SMALL FARM ADVOCATE, AND FARM AND RESTAURANT OWNER – ABOUT HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR NEXT TRIP TO THE FARMERS’ MARKET THIS SUMMER AND TAP INTO THE NUTRITIONAL ADVANTAGES OF SHOPPING LOCALLY.
By Sari Beth Rosenberg
“The food (from small farms) is more nutrient dense,” says Canty, “and most of the vitamins, minerals and probiotics that people are taking in abundance now can be found naturally in your food.”
“Cucumbers and zucchini are very hydrating for your skin and it’s a no brainer that what grows in season is exactly what your body needs. Since we need to hydrate in the summer, cucumbers, zucchini and watermelon grow.” Radishes are a colder weather crop, but they deserve a mention because they are still around in the summer. “They contain a lot of antioxidants that protect your skin, as do berries.”
SHOP LOCALLY, BENEFIT NUTRITIONALLY
“Small farms have hidden health benefits based on the ways that they take care of their soil,” says Canty. • THEY DON’T SPRAY HARMFUL CHEMICALS. • THEY ROTATE THEIR ANIMALS AND THEIR CROPS. Photo: Heidi Murphy

MIND+BODY HAIR TIPS + TRICKS
An advice column by Elline Surianello, hair expert, and LeMetric Hair Studio founder
5 TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN ROCKING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS THIS SUMMER READY OR NOT, SUMMER IS HERE AND THE TEMPERATURE IS RISING. JUST LIKE YOU HAVE THE NEED TO ADJUST YOUR WARDROBE TO MATCH THE SEASON, YOUR HAIRCARE REGIME WILL NEED TO CHANGE AS WELL. HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL POINTERS TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION NOW THAT WE’VE BROKEN OUT THE FLIPFLOPS AND ARE HITTING THE BEACH!
• Be mindful of swimming in extensions. Saltwater and chlorine can have an extreme impact on the look and feel of your extensions. The higher the quality of hair, the more versatility you have, but you still want to keep an eye out for what the summer environment is doing to your hair. • Embrace your natural hair texture. If you have curly hair, don't fight the curl! Do yourself a favor and and get curly extensions and pieces to better match your hair so you don’t have to worry about going back and forth with textures too often. This will ultimately give you low maintenance and natural looks that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine. • Avoid gross summer dirt and product build up by washing your hair as needed. The golden rule is if you think your hair is dirty – it is – so go wash it! We usually wash our hair on a schedule every couple of days, but during the summer we are adding much more sweat and outdoor activities to the mix, and extensions can easily become dirty and weighed down much quicker than normal. I suggest you also consider using more lightweight moisturizers for summer months. • Summer is a great time to consider changing your hair. In many cases shorter styles, a few highlights, or an allover color changes are the way to go to refresh your look. Consider adding bangs or going for that shade of rich golden honey you always wanted to try, and give yourself that pep in your step that only a new hairdo can. • Keep extensions for a maximum 2 to 3 months. I know that getting your hair done can be a hassle. You have to make time for it, your have to find the perfect stylist (I highly recommend LeMetric, but I am a bit biased!), and we all know that the quality hair costs a pretty penny. The hinderance can keep you from renewing your hair but if you’re keeping your install in longer than 2 to 3 months, you’re doing yourself a disservice. It is not unsanitary (you can develop dandruff issues, or the much dreaded scalp fungus among other things) and your natural hair needs attention.

DON’T FORGET TO HYDRATE!
“Kneaded” Advice By Laurie Towers
As commonplace as massage has become in our society, it’s still surprising how so many people haven’t experienced this form of well-being. Whether the massage is for relaxation or as a form of physical rehabilitation, you should be clear on what you want from the session as well as what to expect, especially if you’re a first-timer. Here’s what to keep in mind as you prepare for rejuvenation: Choose a reputable establishment. Word of mouth is always the best recommendation (friends, colleagues, or other health professionals will be honest about their experience). Make sure all therapists are licensed and have documentation of credibility. Select the right therapist. Your masseuse should be professionally attired and will begin a dialogue as to your medical history, chief complaints, and the reasons that brought you in. Feedback on pressure, as well as anything else that comes up during the session, is paramount. Embrace open communication. An essential part of any relationship, especially when dealing with a health professional, is to be honest. Holding back will only short-change you in the long run. As with any other health practitioner, it may take some time to find the “right one,” but any investment in your body is a worthy one.

MIND+BODY better about themselves. I have seen more consultations recently for breast reductions, breast augmentations, and abdominoplasty [tummy tuck] procedures, thanks in part to what I perceive as an improving fitness level among these women.
Can you tell us how your practice is responding to that need? The field as a whole has truly evolved, and
there is now certainly a more aggressive approach to solving patient problems with less invasive procedures — doing more with less, so to speak.
Speaking of less invasive procedures, which types of treatments do you provide that don’t involve surgery? Along with the more well-known

PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY: A VAST ARRAY OF LIFE-ENHANCING SOLUTIONS By Maria Kavan
AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES, SO DOES OUR DESIRE TO LOOK AND FEEL OUR BEST… Most of us, when we think of resolutions, think January 1. That’s the day we turn our minds to self-improvement, resolving to take better care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. All too frequently, however, the snow, cold, and those extra layers of clothing quash that burning desire. But then the weather turns warm, heating up our longing to look and feel our best. Outdoor activities and lighter clothes make us take a closer look at the state of our health and appearance. In some cases, we may want to consider cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, or perhaps restorative procedures. With that in mind, we checked in with Dr. Alfred T. Culliford, the director of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Hand Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital. We asked him about the latest advances in the field, and the ways his team, which includes physician assistant Agnieszka Lantowski, works to bring patients to optimum well-being.
What trends do you see in your practice? What I’ve observed over
the past eight years is that more and more patients want to lead a healthier lifestyle. People are coming in with significant amounts of weight loss — whether through surgery, or because of diet and exercise — and they want to complete their fitness journey with body contour surgery. Women have definitely become more body-image conscious; they look better and naturally, want to feel
126 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
What made you choose this specialty?
Plastic surgery is an incredibly broad discipline in which patients are essentially reborn. We help the victim of an accident or trauma one day, a recovering cancer patient the next, and a child born with a congenital anomaly the following day. What other specialty can say that? We have the most varied patient population in all of medicine, and that’s what challenges me. I have operated on a child born 12 weeks premature and someone who was 101 years old. Every problem is unique, and every procedure and consultation we perform has the ability to drastically change someone’s life.
Tell us about the training and education you’ve received, and how that led to your current position. After completing my undergraduate degree at
Wesleyan University and earning a medical degree with honors from New York University’s School of Medicine, I completed a five-year general surgery residency at NYU and graduated with distinction in research. I did a two-year research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a three-year fellowship at the Institute of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at New York University Medical Center, and was certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. I’ve been a full-time faculty member and have worked exclusively at Staten Island University Hospital since 2006. In 2013, I became the director of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at SIUH. In December of 2014, I earned my MBA.
You certainly have a broad range of focus areas in your field. Is there any particular aspect that stands out for you? Patients who want cosmetic surgery have generally been thinking about it for a long time. On the other hand, those who need reconstructive surgery are often dealing with a situation on a more timesensitive basis. Surgery to reconstruct a breast after cancer treatment or surgery to reconstruct a leg after a motor vehicle accident are two examples of the opportunities plastic surgeons have to improve patient’s lives. It’s those types of procedures – the operations that help people live their everyday lives and allow them to do things they want to do – that can really make the most impact.”

TRYING TO CONCEIVE: WHAT ARE MY TREATMENT OPTIONS? By Dr. Katherine Melzer-Ross, GENESIS Fertility and Reproductive Medicine
MANY WOMEN TRYING TO BECOME PREGNANT ARE HESITANT TO VISIT A FERTILITY SPECIALIST, POSSIBLY DUE TO MANY MYTHS ABOUT TREATMENTS. HERE ARE FIVE MEDICAL OPTIONS A FERTILITY SPECIALIST COULD RECOMMEND. A WOMAN’S TREATMENT SHOULD BE TAILORED TO HER AND HER PARTNER’S NEEDS AS THERE IS NO “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” WHEN IT COMES TO FERTILITY OPTIONS.
128 THE HAMPTONS ISSUE
For some women, especially those with irregular menstrual cycles, it is difficult to predict their fertile window. A doctor will determine if a woman is ovulating on a regular basis through ultrasound and blood test results. Then he or she can map the most fertile time to attempt conception. This is similar to women using ovulation predictor kits and basal body temperature charting at home. However, doing the testing at a fertility center will yield more accurate results.
INDUCTION OF OVULATION
For women who are not ovulating regularly, or those who have been unsuccessful trying to conceive with regular ovulation, a fertility specialist will often recommend “ovulation induction.” This refers to administration of oral medicine (either clomiphene citrate or letrozole) or an injectable medication on specific days of their cycle. The medications are designed to guide the ovaries to create an egg follicle (or two) at a more predictable time. This is generally paired with monitoring of the women’s response to make sure the medicine is working and not too many egg follicles have developed. The risk of having twins is slightly increased with this treatment.
For certain couples, there is the option of intrauterine insemination, commonly referred to as “IUI.” The IUI procedure is performed in a doctor’s office and may be done in conjunction with “ovulation induction.” The sperm is prepared in the lab using a special technique to maximize its movement. Then the prepared sperm is placed directly inside the uterus using a small catheter, similar to having a pap smear. Insemination can be performed using donor sperm in same-sex female couples, or in heterosexual couples where there is a suboptimal sperm count or difficulties with sexual relations.
In-vitro fertilization (“IVF”) is a process originally developed for women whose fallopian tubes were damaged or blocked (due to infection, surgeries, anatomical issues, etc.), but is now used for a wide array of conditions. It involves the retrieval of eggs from the female partner in an outpatient surgery setting and fertilization with sperm from a male partner or donor. The fertilized embryos are then cultured in the lab until they are ready to be placed back into the woman’s uterus. In couples that have been found to be carriers of any recessive disorders (e.g., cystic fibrosis), the embryos can be tested to ensure the disorder will not affect their child.
“EACH COUPLE’S JOURNEY IS UNIQUE AND TREATMENTS SHOULD BE MODIFIED TO ACCOUNT FOR PERSONAL DIFFERENCES AND PREFERENCES.” SURGERY
For women with a fertility issue secondary to an anatomic problem, surgery may be the first step. For example, some women are found to have polyps or fibroids within their uterine cavity. These have been shown to decrease the chances for implantation, so removal of these lesions can often improve fertility outcomes. In women who have fibroids on the outside of their uterus or endometriosis, a condition that causes scarring of the tubes, a fertility doctor may recommend a laparoscopy to look inside the pelvis and correct any problems. While there are other fertility treatment options, these are the “mainstays.” Each couple’s journey is unique and treatments should be modified to account for personal differences and preferences. If you think you might benefit from the services of a fertility specialist, now is the time to contact one. The chances for successful treatment are greater for women at a younger age, so it is better to have a consultation earlier rather than later.

A NOVEL IDEA “Sarong Party Girls”
Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan (William Morrow)
The term “sarong party girl” actually has roots in Singapore’s Colonial days, when British soldiers would have pretty sarong-wearing local girls escort them to parties. The modern-day definition closely aligns with what we’d call a gold digger, and there’s four of them in Lu-Lien Tan’s novel. Jazzy and three of her friends, all modern SPGs, as they call themselves, are on the hunt for wealthy, white ex-pat husbands who will keep them in the lap of luxury. “Chanel babies,” the name given to the coveted half-Asian, half-white babies who are status symbols in their own right, are also in their sights. Can Jazzy and her friends battle their way through gender politics and class wars to up their status in Singapore society? Lu-Lien Tan’s book, written in “Singlish,” will reel you in, just like the SPGs reel in their men.
“Santorini Sunsets” Anita Hughes (St. Martin)
Hughes has a way of transporting us to the most exotic places with her writing. In her latest novel, we’re swept off to Santorini, an impossibly gorgeous Greek island, where Brigit, a New York socialite, is about to get married. Brigit seems to have it all, including her engagement to Hollywood hottie Blake Crawford. That is, until she finds out that her ex-husband, Nathaniel, is the reporter assigned to cover their wedding. It’s just the beginning of a bumpy road to happily-ever-after for Brigit, who will discover a secret about her fiancé that will show her being alone isn’t such a bad thing after all.
“The Girl from the Savoy” Hazel Gaynor (HarperCollins)
War is hell, especially for Dolly Lane, an English maid who is mourning the loss of the soldier she loved. After the Great War, Dolly tries to get her life back on track by taking a job at The Savoy, a posh hotel where London’s “Bright Young Things” get their kicks. Life starts looking up when she answers an ad from a songwriter searching for a “muse,” but things are never the same once she gets swept up into the lives of actress Loretta May and her brother, Perry. Dolly’s own life is looking brighter and brighter – but what will her future happiness cost her today?

“Cured by Nature: How to Heal from the Inside Out, Find Happiness and Discover Your True Self” Tara Mackey (Skyhorse Publishing)
When life stresses us out, it’s easy to turn to medication to make us feel better. Mackey, a certified lab analyst and environmental technician, started The Organic Life Blog to show us there’s a better, more natural way to take care of ourselves. In her book, which is part how-to and part memoir, Mackey shares with readers how she pulled herself off antidepression and anxiety medications at age 24, opting instead to transform her life and find happiness without a prescription bottle.
EMPOWERING OUR DAUGHTERS When Photoshopped magazine covers are the norm, it can be difficult to raise young girls in ways that encourage them to be themselves. That’s why it’s great to have someone like Tara Mackey around to remind us that leading healthy, natural lives is more important than focusing on thigh gap and Botox. To her readers who are raising young daughters in our appearance-focused world, Mackey says, “I think [we should] encourage them to be themselves and to remind them it’s hard being a kid … that there’s nothing wrong with them. They’re not broken. They’re not flawed. They’re perfect human beings, and [it’s important] to take their actions in stride.”
“Suicide Squad” hits theaters August 5th, 2016
COMICS TAKE OVER THE CINEMA
If it seems like there’s a new comic book superhero movie being released every month or so, you’re right: Comics are where it’s at when it comes to big-budget movies. This summer is no different. Riding in on the wake of “Captain America: Civil War” released by Marvel in May is Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad,” based on the group of super villains from the “Batman” comics published by DC. The aptly named crew of misfit assassins, including Jared Leto as the psychotic Joker and Margot Robbie as the gorgeous-but-insane Harley Quinn, have been given dangerous top-secret missions in lieu of prison sentences. Will this movie have us cheering for the bad guys? Head to theaters this August to find out. B

While most teenagers these days are interested in spending their free time on “screen time,” Sydney Levine is a refreshing exception. You’ll find this 16-year-old using her spare time to raise awareness for kidney disease. Why? When Sydney’s brother Matthew was 2 years old, a blood test revealed levels of protein in his blood high enough to be indicative of kidney failure. For several years since, Sydney has focused on increasing kidney awareness and fundraising efforts in her Long Island, NY community. The uber-classic exteriors of two mid-1800 homes (and a barn) are packed with contemporary luxury, modern touches of fun, and comfort inside 22 eclectic rooms and suites. This is not your grandmother’s inn, but she would surely approve of the location one block from where the Revolution began and the staff’s above-and-beyond service. Complimentary touches; like a gourmet breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking, bikes, and more make this a smart option, even for nearby Boston stays. InnatHastingsPark.com

Personal Porchetta Parties can be arranged on terrace suite balconies, though the real scene is in the tony boutique hotel’s Living Room where guests flock to enjoy cocktails and complimentary wine. Four Seasons Resort & Spa
Hidden above the Historic Hamilton Estate, the Bananas Bistro and Art Gallery is perfection under the stars. Built high in the palm trees, like a fantastical treehouse, I was able to channel all of my Robinson Crusoe dreams, which is why this restaurant is at the top of my list. Bananas exudes major character, as it is full of shabby chic touches, with ornate chandeliers hanging from the rustic roofing. The dining terrace overlooks lush gardens with the Caribbean Sea visible in the distance. We sat down for dinner just in time to see the stunning Nevis sunset while sipping the delicious signature Passion fruit martini.
What better way to relax on an island than to enjoy a sensational massage at one of the top spas? On our day trip to the only Four Seasons Resort in the Caribbean, we enjoyed our “Sunday Funday” with a traditional massage, which was a tranquil escape and a wonderful way to recharge our batteries before hitting the sauna and cooling off near the infinity pool. A healthy spa lunch and a well-deserved nap was the perfect ending to a peaceful afternoon.
Montpelier Plantation, our weeklong home away from home, played host to our stay. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience for a peaceful getaway. The property is unique in that it was built on a historic sugar plantation and is designed to let the fresh sea air and tranquility connect you to a simpler way of life. This Relais and Chateaux property offers great hospitality along with a serene tropical surrounding and the best rum punches on the island. Be sure to dine at their restaurants during your stay. The property’s restaurants – 750, Mill Privee, and Indigo – will not only delight your senses but your palette as well. Between the pool, spa, and daily monkey sightings, we love this place more than you will ever know.
Golden Rock Inn Gardens
Dating back to the early 1800s, Golden Rock sits on 100 square acres stretching up the verdant slopes of Nevis Peak. Unlike the island’s other slopes, the Golden Rock offers a quaint and private stay with spectacular views of other Caribbean islands including Antigua, Redonda, and Montserrat. We chose to take a walk around the garden art gallery of artists Helen and Brice Marden, which looks like a tropical wonderland. With the juxtaposition of the architectural landscape and flowering plants that provided an exotic aroma, it is easy to be enticed by these incredible views.
Nisbet Plantation & Beach Club
Nestled on thirty acres, Nisbet Plantation is the Caribbean’s only historical plantation inn on a beach. Located along the silky sands and shimmering seas of Nevis, Nisbet Plantation’s swaying palms surround its 36 casually magnificent accommodations. Under the night sky, we kicked off our sandals and danced the night away to a live reggae band, with a Caribbean beer in hand and a smile on our face. As promised, Nisbet Planation’s old-warm charm created an authentic, remarkable experience.
Nevis Equestrian Centre
If you’re looking for a grand adventure, head on over to the Nevis Equestrian Centre for a sunset beach and trail ride. On a picturesque early evening we had the pleasure of being guided by the owner, John Guilbert, who led us through beautiful trails where we experienced some of the most breathtaking scenery Nevis has to offer. During the ride you will explore pristine beaches and historic ruins while also journeying through Charlestown, taking in the deep-rooted history and nature of the island. This will be remembered as one of the best rides of our lives.
Even if you’ve never heard of the quiet island of Nevis, you’ve surely heard about its most popular beach bar, Sunshine’s, located on Pinney Beach. This local favorite is great spot to enjoy a sensational rum cocktail called The Killer Bee. (It’s named Killer Bee for a reason!)
ESCAPE TO GRACE BAY’S LUXURIOUS AND SERENE HAVEN: THE PALMS TURKS AND CAICOS By Dara Kaplan
GRACE BAY BEACH ON TURKS AND CAICOS IS KNOWN FAR AND WIDE AS ONE OF THE TOP BEACHES IN THE WORLD, AND FOR GOOD REASON. EVEN AVID CARIBBEAN TRAVELERS AND SEASONED BEACHGOERS ARE IN AWE OF THE PRISTINE GRACE BAY. ADJECTIVES LIKE “POWDER WHITE” AND “CRYSTAL BLUE TURQUOISE” CANNOT ADEQUATELY CONVEY THE PURENESS OF THE SAND AND THE VIBRANCY OF THE WATERS. GRACE BAY BEACH IS A SERENE HAVEN, RICH WITH AQUATIC LIFE AND CORAL REEFS. A FAVORITE HIDEOUT FOR CELEBRITIES LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER, BRUCE WILLIS, AND BRANGELINA, TURKS AND CAICOS MAY BE THE IDEAL SANCTUARY FOR YOU, TOO.

A Gem of a Resort
While there are many resorts to choose from on these beautiful islands, The Palms Turks and Caicos is a cut above the rest. An impressive combination of exclusivity, luxury, and serenity, The Palms Turks and Caicos is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy five-star amenities, minus the pretension. The resort provides a stylish boutique feel in a laidback, relaxing environment. Whether you choose to stay in one of the ocean-view guest rooms or an over-the-top penthouse, you’ll find richly appointed marble doublesink bathrooms with soaking tubs,
and wraparound balconies with daybeds. Sleep your stress away on top of the hand-tufted kingsize bedding while listening to the ocean breeze through the window, or tan and relax by the infinity pool located in the center of the resort.
Beachgoers will love the leisure activities at The Palms, which include an Instagram-worthy infinity pool, a lavish-but-Zen spa, and to-die-for shops that sell everything from luxury handmade home items to Ralph Lauren and Robert Rodriguez. More active guests can take advantage of the resort’s snorkel equipment,
Hobie Cat sailboats, and kayaks. If you choose to use your time to veg out, you never even have to leave the beach. Take advantage of the beachside service and order from Plunge Bar, the poolside restaurant. Our personal favorite menu items were the freshly caught fish tacos and the signature Grace Bay Breeze.
For the spa junkies among us, the Spa at The Palms is one of the most acclaimed and award-winning spas in the Caribbean. This oasis is tucked away in its own luxurious location for anyone looking to re-center. Water surrounds each stand-alone treatment room, which offers different features depending on the time of day. Start your experience with the 25-minute Zareeba, which takes place in the Spa’s secret garden. Your own journeymen will take you to the enclosed hut, where you’ll find a clay pot of steaming herbs to detoxify your body and help you find inner peace. This one-of-a-kind experience will begin your journey to serenity and tranquility. Of course, the Spa also offers classics such as massages and facials, which are blissful and relaxing.
The food at The Palms Turks and Caicos cannot be missed. Parallel23, located on top of a wide terrace, combines Caribbean flavor with a wood-burning oven. Indulge in classic seafood and steak in an elegant and refined outdoor environment. The huge French doors and high-tech display kitchen allow diners to watch their food being prepared while sipping on spirits from the boutique wine list. Whether you’re looking for a formal dinner or afternoon drinks, this is a restaurant that rivals the top eateries in New York City. If you’re seeking a more casual dining experience that’s also superbly romantic, try the beachside 72 West. Do yourself a favor and request a table surrounded by tiki torches so you can dine with your toes in the sand and delight on the conch fritters. Heavenly! The Palms Turks and Caicos allows travelers to experience the riches of the Caribbean while basking in the resort’s serenity and tranquility. When planning your next beach vacation, put this hotspot at the top of your list – you’ll thank us later!

Summer Sojourn in Laguna Niguel
There’s nothing more delightful than spending lazy days at the beach during SoCal’s spectacular summers. One of my favorite places to enjoy this seasonal pastime is at the fantastic Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel where you’ll be spoiled beyond measure with their playful approach to luxury. Magnificently displayed atop a 150foot seaside bluff with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the popular Salt Creek Beach below, this resort is perfect for couples, families, or even if you’re traveling alone. RITZ CARLTON LAGUNA NIGUEL IS THE PERFECT SUMMER VACAY SPOT AND HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.”
Dining at their pan-Latin restaurant Raya is a particular delight for lunch, not least because of the spectacular unobstructed views from the floor-to-ceiling windows and also due to their delicious fare, including lobster tacos, truffle manchego fries, and pan-seared scallops with char sui pork belly. Delicious! Other dining options include Enosteak restaurant, renowned for their organic produce grown locally in Orange Country and grass-fed, pasture-raised beef for amazing steak meals, coupled with their signature compound butters and sauces to tantalize your taste buds. Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel is the perfect summer vacay spot and has something for everyone, including adventure seekers who have 15 eco-excursions to choose from; it’s a paradise for surfing fans and you can experience the serene spa with a comprehensive program of massages and treatments for the more tranquil traveler. One of the featured treatments is the Beach Stone Therapy, where smooth beach stones are heated and placed at strategic parts of the body and then incorporated into a relaxing massage to relieve stress and tension of the mind, body, and spirit. And one of the best things to experience to top off your days are the spectacular and colorful ocean sunsets at Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel. Everything you’ll love and more. New American Flavor at Norah It’s easy to get lost in the plethora of eateries to choose from in West Hollywood, but Norah stands boldly on Santa Monica Boulevard with a very distinct culinary aesthetic and a beautiful environment in which to enjoy it. Designed by Thomas Schoos, the dining space is charming and inviting with delicious New American fare. The high ceilings opened to the rafters give a bright and airy feel with wood, glass, leather, and steel touches for a modern, but comfy interior. Their daily market crudo is always a surprise treat with a rotating selection,
and the pork belly and octopus dish is a hearty choice. Standout dishes are the confit of rabbit with grits, heritage pork with cider glaze, and the lobster Bolognese. But always start with the cast iron cornbread with rosemary and honey butter, just because it’ll make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. There are two bars on either side of the dining room and the sink-into-them leather sofas are perfect to enjoy the craft cocktails with bites like the cauliflower popcorn, and fried hominy cakes. Yum! NorahRestaurant.com

NEW YORK 9 1. Best thing about growing up in NYC? I got to experience the tail end of the 1970s in NYC. I have memories of Studio 54 in its heyday, Double Day and Scribner bookstore on Fifth Avenue, Fiorucci on 59th Street, and roller discos. SoHo was gritty and artistic, and New York was a very, very interesting and exciting place filled with wild and artistic people. New York in the 1970s was my favorite era. It’s too homogeneous and “corporate, scrubbed-up, bland vanilla” now. There is an element of glamour that’s missing to all of the homogeneity. 2. Favorite NYC restaurant? Le Charlot on 69th and Madison. I have always liked small, charming, and homey places that serve excellent food and where they know your name. Le Charlot hits every sweet spot for me. 3. Favorite neighborhood? It depends on my mood. There are different moods to every neighborhood, but I have a very deep attachment to the Lincoln Center area. 4. The best part of my job... Conceptualizing the products and creating the formulations. There is nothing more exciting to me than visualizing something and then bringing it into reality and having it be amazing. The creative process is what I thrive on. I’m a bit of a mad scientist, so I am very dedicated to the recipe side of things. Cutting-edge science is key. 5. A visit to New York isn’t complete unitl... You have a glass of champagne at the King Cole Lounge in the St. Regis, hit the shops on Madison for high fashion in a charming setting, and end the day at the Frick Museum gazing at timeless art.
VENDÔME PARIS’ ALEXANDRA WHITCOMBE Alexandra Whitcombe is the creator and visionary spirit of Vendôme Paris, a family-run enterprise that brings beauty to life through innovation. The daughter of a New York City model and a fine arts aficionado, her 1970’s childhood was a swirl of gallery openings, ballet shows, and high fashion glamour. She grew up within the walls of iconic venues like the Velvet Underground and Studio 54. It was there that she found passion in the world to which she was born and belonged … modeling and ballet were her hobbies; fashion, art history, and botanicals her fields of expertise. Vendome Paris is the product of Whitcombe’s background, her worldliness, and her scientific awareness. She personally sources materials from the highest-quality local vendors in Switzerland, France, and Italy to create a cosmetics line that is technologically engineered to make women look and feel BELLA.

6. Subways or cabs? The subway – it’s a love-hate relationship. 7. Best advice you’ve ever received? “Know when not to speak and never burn your bridges.” These two pieces of advice have served me very, very well. 8. Your one “must-have” beauty item? Really anything from my line, Vendôme Beaute. These days my favorite item is the Magic Wand: All Day Under Eye Plumping Pen. It’s infused with three formulations of all-day releasing hyaluronic acids (and other great ingredients!) for all-day plumping. 9. What’s your definition of beauty? My definition is more European. A lot of my girlfriends are from Europe and have a very different concept of beauty, where they are uniquely and confidently themselves. They are unapologetic in who they are … I love that and can really relate. B
