FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
What can I say? It was a fabulous summer – one of the best so far – and I am definitely going to miss it. So much happened and I enjoyed every minute of it! Spending time in Los Angeles with the family was super fun, and we even got BELLA on a few newsstands when we were there. No matter where we are, BELLA is never too far behind, and we love that now the women in LA can read along too and share in our message of “Beauty Defined By You.” Following that, we hosted our third annual (and most amazing) White Party in August at Beautique at the Capri Hotel in Southampton, with cover/host Lisa Vanderpump. All I can say is WOW … the sponsors, the venue, the guests, the celebs, the press…! It was so fabulous that we had to dedicate eight pages in our Around Town section to recap it all for you (don’t miss pages 156-163).
Courtenay C. Hall EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Courtenay@BellaNYC.com @CourtenayCHall @CourtenayHall
With summer behind us and a fabulous fall ahead, it was absolutely fitting to kick off the season with a fall fashion issue anchored by our exclusive with the newly married Nicky Hilton Rothschild. She was so lovely and gave BELLA’s Dana Priggé – and all of us – an amazing look into her world. Nicky is not only fashionable, she is everything the BELLA woman represents: class, inner beauty, humility, and grace, and we were thrilled to have her on this amazing cover. Honestly, the entire issue is beyond fab – I love every single page and I think, as always, it’s our best issue yet. We have some pretty special features, with guest contributor supermodel and Tsunami survivor Petra Němcová interviewing world-renowned celebrity photographer and author John Russo, as well as a true look at New York fashion with our fall fashion feature starring singer Alexa Ray Joel (yes, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley’s daughter). One last thing I wanted to share is that I have recently become a Special Correspondent for OK! TV and will be appearing every Wednesday talking about celebs, parties, and life in NYC. It is definitely something new and fun, and I am really looking forward to it. Love those new adventures!

THE STYLE REPORT
KAREN KANE Karen Kane is one of the most respected brands in women’s apparel today – a distinction that comes from the label’s namesake designer. BELLA New York sat down with her to discuss her multi-decade career, and what’s next for her eponymous fashion company. Listen in… By Laura Camerlengo You launched your label with your husband in a Studio City garage in 1979. What inspired you to start your own brand? Back in the late ‘70s, I met my husband (and future business partner) Lonnie while working at a junior apparel company in Los Angeles. We both felt like there was a void in the market for fashion-forward women’s clothing that was also easy to wear. For our first collection, we decided to screen-print a series of animals on different silk tops. We worked out of our garage, often until 3 or 4 a.m. each night. From that first collection, we had one style that really took off and allowed us to create a second collection. That’s how it all began. What about starting your own label was most surprising or challenging for you? The entire process was a challenge! It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The hours were grueling, the work wasn’t (and still isn’t) glamorous, and getting our first orders was tough. But once we started to get re-orders we knew we had found our customers, and that feeling was incredible. It’s so exciting to work in an industry where trends move quickly and you have to constantly adapt. You know that you’ll never have two days that are the same.
ALL STYLES AVAILABLE AT KARENKANE.COM

How have your designs changed after nearly 40 years in business? Our business has changed in many ways. In the beginning, it was a limited offering with a select set of styles. Today, we offer products in a wider range of sizes and to a much wider geographic audience. Designing for Southern California was much easier. Now, with the Internet and major nationwide department stores, we have to account for weather and lifestyles that are very different than where we live. It’s an exciting challenge to have, and it definitely impacts the way we approach each season. In 1979, every garment we sold was purchased by a customer in a boutique. Today, one out of every four garments we make is purchased online and shipped directly to the customer. That changes the way people discover new products and try out new styles. What three words best describe a Karen Kane design? Easy, versatile, and unique.
Tell us about the inspiration for your fall 2015 collection. Fall 2015 has a nature-inspired mood with details like fringe and faux fur that are reminiscent of the free-spirited ‘70s. There is a lot of romantic allure from that decade – beautifully deep colors, luxurious textures, and bohemian silhouettes. With our jewelry, we played with a lot of new colors we haven’t done before in accessories. We’re also layering in additional textures like glass and new semi-precious stones. If a BELLA reader were to invest in one Karen Kane design for fall, what should it be? I really love our Tranquil Water Reversible Pendant Necklace. It’s a long silver tone pendant with reversible white and black howlite stones on each side. It’s very easy to wear and an incredible complement to an endless number of outfits. After nearly 40 years in business, what keeps you motivated? Every day is different! I know that I’ll never get bored as long as fashion keeps evolving and changing. That’s the only constant in this industry – change! What’s next for your company? We’re really excited about our first fall jewelry collection! Later in the year, we’ll be launching a swimwear collection, and in early 2016, we’ll be introducing our first active and yoga collection.

HERE’S MY PRESCRIPTION FOR A CHIC AND SAVVY WAY TO TRANSITION THIS FALL SEASON…
By Marcus Stewart
Dear Fashion Doctor, I need your help! I’m a 43-yearold married mom who lives in Manhattan. Without heels, I’m about 5’8” and in great shape. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for what seems like forever, but now it is time for a change. My set of twins are both entering their second year of high school and I have loads of free time now and am itching to rehabilitate my boring look and resurrect myself from my style-less PTA deathbed.
TREND ALERT ERA: The 70s COLOR: Brown ITEM: Turtlenecks PREEN NAVY PEPLUM CURZON SKIRT $920, MODAOPERANDI.COM Why wear a pencil skirt this season when you can wear a “personality skirt”? The flounce hem screams both flirty and fun… plus, it’s ideal for work and play!
My life is pretty casual but I still want to look like effort was put into my look. I attend a few “girls’ only” and “couples’ only” dinners each month, and I’m planning to assist around the office at my husbands’ elite plastic surgery center once or twice a week. I want to look relevant but approachable and appropriate. I want my wardrobe to reflect who I am and how I feel, which is liberated and happy!
H&M BROCADE CROPPED ZIP FRONT JACKET $39, HM.COM Want to jazz up a simple look? Add brocade to your outerwear for a chic yet elegant look.
H&M KNIT RIBBED METALLIC TURTLENECK $29, HM.COM A neutral-colored turtleneck is a must-have this season and it’s perfect when paired with a statement necklace. The hint of metallic adds glamour to any daytime look
Can you help? Signed,
Dear Active Mom, Kudos to you for owning where you are in life and realizing that it’s always a good idea to stay active. And it’s never too late to reintroduce yourself to the world – and to yourself! It seems that you are having a mid-life awakening moment. This is a great thing! It is also a common thing. You are at the perfect age for a “second time around F” moment – fashion moment, that is.
FALLON PAVE BARBED WIRE COLLAR NECKLACE $440; MODAOPERANDI.COM Add a fashion-forward edge to your modern look with this statement collar piece. EDDIE BORGO MOSAIC RING $250, MODAOPERANDI.COM Create finger art by choosing bold statement rings. Don’t be afraid to wear multiple rings!
CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA RENEE CROC EMBOSSED CALF LEATHER PUMPS $845, MODAOPERANDI.COM Nothing says 70’s chic like this chunky ankle strap pump. This sturdy heel is a perfect no-fuss match when transitioning from day to night.
It’s time to illuminate your desire to resurrect who you were before the PTA meetings and the “couples’ only” dinners came along. We want to embrace those truths but not let them determine whom you are or how you should dress ... 40 is the new 20! You are bolder, wiser and more beautiful! You know your body and you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Your wardrobe should showcase this new and exciting chapter in your life in an appropriate, luxe, and confident way. Signed,

As a psychotherapist, I understand how fashion is more than just some frivolous endeavor. It can become the gateway to creating a myriad of ways to express and reinvent ourselves, experience excitement, and in some cases, even heighten our performance level. Sounds like a win-win situation! Underscoring this idea, I came across a fabulous quote recently by the famed Hollywood designer Edith Head. She was an American costume designer who won a record eight Academy Awards for best costume design:
“YOU CAN HAVE ANYTHING YOU WANT IN LIFE IF YOU DRESS FOR IT.” Edith Head knew what she was talking about, and I just love her philosophy! To help us discover our most glamorous selves for autumn, I turned to my sister, Ramy Sharp (our family’s personal style guru) and the creative founder and director of Ramy Brook (RamyBrook.com) to discover what her personal inspiration and recommendations are for this season’s most fashionable fall picks.
FABULOUS FALL PICKS TO FULFILL YOUR INNER FASHIONISTA FANTASIES When the first hint of cool, exhilarating fall air hits, it’s a thrilling time of year. It is not only exciting for those who love the change of seasons, but also for those of us who pleasantly anticipate one of the most exciting fashion times of the year. This is the season we jumpstart the beginning of our new style, new attitude, and a more stylish, sophisticated self. With fall and its fashionable trends, we get to give the world that special version of our ourselves. By Dr. Robi Ludwig

AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF RAMY BROOK, WHAT’S THE FASHION PHILOSOPHY BEHIND YOUR LINE? The Ramy Brook line empowers women to feel sexy. The clothing is sophisticated with a cool edge; it has the look of high-end designers at the cost of a contemporary brand. WHO IS THE “RAMY BROOK WOMAN”? We like to say the Ramy Brook woman ranges from 18 to 80 years old. When she wears Ramy Brook she feels happy, sexy, and strong! She stays busy and active between working as a mom and having a social life. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE FALL FASHION FOR 2015-16? So much of our fall collection is exciting; it has become my favorite season to design. Our sweaters are fabulous! They aren’t your average sweaters – they’re fashionable and on-trend, a staple for every woman’s fall wardrobe! WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE RAMY BROOK FALL PIECES THAT YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? I find it hard to live without the Ramy Brook classic styles, especially our tops. They make the perfect day to night outfit. The “Harriet” is my go-to top: It goes with everything, looks sexy, and I can wear a cool necklace with it to change the look.
WHAT SHOULD FASHION-MINDED WOMEN INCLUDE IN THEIR WARDROBE THIS FALL TO FEEL SPECIAL AND FABULOUS? Everyone should own one sexy black top. If you already have one in your closet, then it’s time to break out of the box and get one in a jewel-toned color!
Sweater: Jessica Skirt: Jessie
WHAT SETS THIS FALL’S COLLECTION APART AT RAMY BROOK? Ramy Brook has always been the place for the perfect goingout outfit. Especially with the fall collection, there is really something for everyone, from our tops to our bottoms. When you really do not know what to wear, the jumpsuit is the answer – one and done! For newness, sweaters are major for us and really make a statement in this season’s collection. IS THERE A COLOR THEME YOU ARE DRAWN TO MOST THIS TIME OF YEAR? I love the color blush! It’s neutral but also has personality. It never reads last season.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST FASHION ADVICE FOR THE BELLA LADIES OUT THERE? Be yourself. Your clothes should not identify who you are. You should identify who you are by putting something on that makes you feel confident. This guarantees you will have a fabulous day! B

TO REAL WAY FIVE HIGH-FASHION TRENDS TO TRY THIS FALL From relaxed fit pantsuits to luxurious leather separates, there are many easy-to-wear trends to embrace this season. Check out BELLA NYC’s top five favorites from New York Fashion Week along with our how-to-wear-them tips. By Laura Camerlengo
After several seasons of skinny styles, pantsuits finally relax this season. Countless designers featured relaxed-fit jacket-and-pants ensembles in fall-appropriate fabrics, like tweeds and wools in shades of brown and gray. To top your suit off with style, take cues from the Derek Lam and Carolina Herrera runways. Lam opted for a more traditional take on this trend, pairing his suits with shell tops, button down blouses, and crewneck sweaters. For a more fashion-forward look, pick a matching or monochrome top, like those seen on Carolina Herrera’s runway.

TURTLENECKS A cold weather wardrobe staple, turtlenecks appeared on countless fall 2015 runways, and ranged in style from chunky to lightweight, opaque to semi-sheer. Derek Lam offered a colorful spin on this classic style by pairing a fuchsia and black color-blocked knit turtleneck with a rust-orange wide leg suit – another fall fashion must have. In a slightly sexier take on this trend, Zimmerman presented a cowl-neck lace turtleneck with wide leg slacks and a long, wool coat, while TOME’s cozy turtlenecks looked downright risqué when worn over their semi-sheer lace skirt. Want to try this racy style at home? Be sure to pick an extra-long, thigh-skimming turtleneck top.
BCBG Max Azria
Spring’s biggest trend remains chic for fall, as designers continue to seek inspiration in the bohemian fashions of the 1970s. While spring 2015’s bohemian styles manifested sheer, flowing fabrics, feathers, and metallic leathers, fall’s boho-inspired designs feature rich, dark suedes, fringe, and embroidered and fur-covered extras. Anna Sui, Rebecca Minkoff, and BCBG Max Azria conjured the free-spirited silhouettes of the ‘70s with miniskirts and mini dresses, thigh-high boots, and lush, long coats.
September/October 2015 | BELLANYC.COM 51
NEON HUES Neon colors like juicy citron, shocking pink, and electric blue gave vibrancy to many fall 2015 runways. To make these bright shades fall-friendly, designers paired their neon fashions with neutral separates and accessories. To easily incorporate neon pieces into your cold-weather wardrobe, seek inspiration from Milly, who featured oh-soNew-York black and gray ensembles with pops of color in the form of neon jackets and skirts. If you’re feeling bold, pair brilliant neon separates with pale colors, like baby blue and pastel purple, as seen in TOME’s fall presentation.
From jackets to skirts, and pants to dresses, leather was everywhere at New York Fashion Week – and the blacker, the better. For a fresh take on this enduring trend, take a cue from Nicole Miller and pair your favorite leather jacket with a printed miniskirt and contrasting patterned tights. Leather pants, another fall wardrobe staple, also make a comeback this season, and Rebecca Minkoff evoked rock ‘n’ roll glam by pairing her leather pants with a crisp white blazer – and little else. For a lady-like take on this bad girl trend, follow the lead of Vivienne Tam, who adapted her lavish leathers into fit-and-flare quilted dresses.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
As a young girl in England, actress Camilla Luddington was determined and focused to make a career out of doing what she loved and following in the footsteps of her childhood hero. As a result, she won her first talent show at the age of 4 and landed a talent agent at 11. Luddington’s dreams of stage and screen were slowly beginning to take shape. While it wouldn’t be until her late teens that the “Grey’s Anatomy” star’s time to shine on screen would arrive, she says the struggles that have come with such a career haven’t bothered her. “I couldn’t imagine doing anything else; it’s been tough, but worth it.”

“KIDS WERE FASCINATED WITH ME SINCE I WAS THE ONLY BRITISH GIRL THEY KNEW.” When she was 14, Luddington and her family moved to Texas for a year for her father’s job. While most girls that age might be upset over such a life-changing event, the future star embraced the change without hesitation. “I always loved America,” she says. In fact, she credits the popularity of the English pop band, The Spice Girls, with helping her fit in. The group was at the height of their success at the time, which made it easier to acclimate to a new environment. “Kids were fascinated with me since I was the only British girl they knew.” The family returned to England while Luddington was in high school, but it wasn’t long before the actress made her return across the pond to continue her education. After a brief stint at a university in Pennsylvania, which proved to not be the right fit, Luddington chose to attend New York Film Academy. She didn’t feel as comfortable in front of the camera as she did on stage, so she knew it was important to shake things up.
PURSUING A DREAM
After graduation, when most new actors are pounding the pavement, Luddington returned back home again to England. “I wanted to save some money so I could get a place in LA,” she says. But after waitressing for a year (something she says she was “no good at”), it was time to start pursuing the dream. She found a roommate through Craigslist, something the actress says she’d never do today. “We would never search for roommates online now, but we’re glad we did because now we’re like family.”
With a few minor projects under her belt, Luddington’s breakout role came in 2011 when she was cast as Catherine Middleton in “William and Kate: The Movie.” The Lifetime Original movie chronicled the relationship between William and Kate from their courtship in college through their engagement. The film was released just two weeks before the royal wedding. “There was a lot of frenzy surrounding the royals, and it felt like we were a part of it,” says the British beauty. At the time of filming, the Duchess of Cambridge had only done a few interviews about her engagement, so the opportunity to portray someone who was relatively a mystery to the public was “super intriguing” for the actress. With a total of 72 costume changes (all replicas of the outfits Kate wore), Luddington says she enjoyed portraying the future Duchess’ transition from her college years through her more glamorous looks. When filming wrapped, Luddington’s star continued to grow; she booked recurring roles on shows like HBO’s “True Blood” and Showtime’s “Californication.” The characters she portrayed were far cries from the role she had just wrapped up, but for the talented actress that’s one of the things she loves about acting – the opportunity to transform into someone else. “It’s always fun to play something different.”
REPORTING FOR DUTY
Shortly thereafter, Luddington auditioned for a role in a new TV show being created by the Shonda Rhimes. While she didn’t get the part (the show never made it to air), the down-to-earth actress eventually got a second chance. “Shonda was looking to add five new interns to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and hadn’t found what she was looking for,” says Luddington. This time she landed the part. “It’s amazing working on one of Shonda’s shows. I’m glad she remembered me.” A super-fan of “Grey’s,” Luddington was not only excited to join the cast in the role of Dr. Jo Wilson but says she was even more elated to learn her character’s love interest was Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers). She recalls their first meeting a few days before their first scene together. “Justin stopped by my trailer and broke the ice when he said, ‘I hear you’re my new girlfriend.’” With a similar response, Luddington says he was so sweet in the initial meeting and remembers thinking “thank God he is so nice!”

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
“IF I COULD DO ANYTHING, I’D LOVE TO ONE DAY HAVE A PET SANCTUARY.” While her character has been saving lives since season 9 (the show is going into its 12th season this fall), Luddington loves the strength her character embodies. She’s battled inner demons her entire life yet continues to break through and put herself out there. “Jo has huge trust issues, and in season 12 not everything comes easy for her; I like playing that.” Welcoming the challenges her character must face, she’s invested in Jo and fiercely protective of her. Luddington lost her mom when she was 19 years old and knows the feeling of having your world turned upside down. She hopes those watching feel inspired that they too can overcome whatever adversity they’re going through. For Luddington, she can relate to the ambition, struggle, and feeling of loss her character has experienced, but that’s as far as the similarities reach, she says. And while she has thankfully never experienced the abuse and the aggression that Jo has, she says it’s an interesting story to explore and share with the audience.
EXPANDING HER REACH
In addition to her work on the hit ABC medical drama, Luddington has been hard at work on a myriad of projects. This past summer she wrapped up filming the movie, “The Healer,” starring Jonathan Pryce, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kaitlyn Bernard, and Jorge Garcia (find out more at Instagram.com/HealerMovie). While the actress describes the project as “funny and charming,” there are some heavier issues in the story

that deal with childhood cancer, she says. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Newman’s Own Foundation, the private foundation the late actor Paul Newman established in 2005 to sustain the legacy of his philanthropic work. Luddington also provides the voice and motion capture of Lara Croft in the 2013 game, “Tomb Raider” and the upcoming sequel, “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” set for release in November. After watching what goes into making these games and the physicality they require, Luddington says she has a newfound appreciation for them. She even had to change up her workout to include other types of physical activity to train her body to move in different ways. “Every part of making those games was amazing, and I’m definitely a fan more so than ever.”
Luddington is currently working on a “topsecret project” that’s set for next year, one she says is “really exciting.” She promises fans she’ll Tweet about it once she can officially discuss it. “It’s something different to anything I’ve ever done before.” With all this busy actress has going on, she still makes time to lend her support to the things that matter most to her. A lover of dogs, Luddington currently has a terrier mix named Gus and recently adopted another rescue pup, 3-year-old Sully from a shelter in Los Angeles, making her work with charities such as The Best Friends Animal Rescue and LA Animal Rescue an easy fit. “If I could do anything, I’d love to one day have a [pet] sanctuary,” says the actress who admits she is most happiest when she’s at home with her puppy. “Waking up with him is perfection!” B

But after doing a quick search of before and afters, I was astounded to see some beautiful work out there. Among these talented artists was Emilia Berry, founder of PermaLine Cosmetics and one of the most highly regarded professionals in the field of permanent makeup in Europe and the United States. I linked up with her to get the real deal on tattooed makeup. Here’s what she had to say: WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR PERMANENT MAKEUP? “Permanent makeup is for everyone. Not only does it help clients with conditions such as alopecia, it provides the convenience of not having to constantly apply makeup. It’s a huge timesaver for all women and makes life easier for people with glasses. It’s also great for women who go to the gym or the beach. Additionally, paramedical permanent makeup techniques can camouflage scars, stimulate hair [growth] on the scalp, and recreate areolas.” WHAT ARE THE RISKS? “There are no risks if you go to a licensed, reputable company that follows health code and uses quality pigments and products. Make sure to choose a very experienced permanent makeup artist and always ask for before-andafter pictures. Do your homework and research, research, research! “While pricing is important, never decide to go with the cheapest. Your safety and final results should be your primary concern.”
Emilia Berry, founder of PermaLine Cosmetics
PERMANENT MAKEUP DONE RIGHT By Rachel Paul
As a makeup artist, I have worked with clients who have been victims of everything from botched facelifts to overdone brow plugs. There’s not much that surprises me. That being said, I still scratch my head when I see tattooed makeup gone wrong. If I had a nickel for every green eyebrow I had to correct, I would be one wealthy woman!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL? “There is very little, to no, downtime. Most clients go back to work after their treatment. Depending on the area treated, the healing process takes 3-5 days. After the skin is healed, there will be fading that can take up to 14 days.” HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY NEW LOOK? “There is no particular maintenance required, however, if you want to extend the life and vibrancy of your new permanent makeup, sunscreen is a must to prevent early fading. Also it’s important to know that anti-aging products containing Retin-A, Vitamin C, and AHA will fade your permanent makeup earlier. We recommend a refresher approximately every 18-24 months (based on your metabolism and skin regiment) for sun lovers or those who don’t want to skimp on all their beauty regiments.” WHERE SHOULD I START? “The most common first permanent makeup treatment women choose is eyebrows because they’re such a focal point of the face. Correctly shaped eyebrows can greatly improve an appearance and make you look younger.”

TARYN MANNING’S BEAUTY PRODUCT PRAISES By Janene Mascarella
You may recognize Taryn Manning as a regular on the cult hit, “Orange Is The New Black,” playing controversial religious zealot “Pennsatucky,” but this Arizona-born beauty has been in the industry for over a decade as an actress, singer-songwriter/DJ, and fashion designer. In addition to her acting credits, which also include the movies “Crossroads,” “Hustle & Flow,” and “8 Mile,” Manning began releasing music with her band Boomkat in 2003. She also launched a clothing line, Born Uniqorn, with her best friend in 2005. Most recently, she collaborated on a new collection with independent clothing company Jawbreaking and also co-wrote, produced and directed her first web series. Her first solo EP will be released later this year. BELLA caught up with Manning and she shared some details about her favorite beauty line, Geri G. “I love all Geri G. products and her wealth of knowledge about eating raw and making it easy to get all your natural supplements on the go. [She shares] easy ways to eat healthy (and tasty!), but my biggest beauty product that I love is actually something that I drink every morning…”
72 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
“Geri G. ESSENTIAL DAILY GREENS is my beauty staple. It gives my body the key nutrients to help me wake up, feel energized and gives my skin such a glow.”
“I always have Geri’s TRANSCEUTICAL CANVAS (TC) with me as my skin savor. It hydrates my skin and makes my makeup stay on all day without touch-ups! I just love how I don’t have to use foundation on my off days when I have TC on. It just makes my makeup look flawless.”
“I’m very picky about mascara because if it makes my lashes feel heavy or crusty, I just want to pull my eyelids out. Geri G. PLUSH MASCARA IN BLACK is gentle, spreads lashes out nicely (not clumpy or drying), and it comes in a small nice tube that is easy to travel with.”
“Also, Geri G.’s LIP GLOSS CRÈME is flawless and it lasts. It’s not gooey at all and all the colors are simple. Plus, there’s just the right amount of colors and palette so you aren’t overwhelmed by so many to choose from. I am a ‘less-is-more’ kind of girl.”

FROM THE RUNWAY TO THE GALLERY FALL FASHION EXHIBITS IN NYC By Barbara Bellesi
Fashion Week hits New York in early September, and everyone who is anyone in the fashion industry will be on hand to gaze at models as they strut down the runway wearing the latest creations. Of course, unless you happen to be close friends with Anna Wintour or Beyonce and Jay Z, the likelihood of your getting past the tents is slim to none. You could go window-shopping to get your dose of couture, or … you could spend a day at a museum?! That’s right: Museums aren’t just for housing classic paintings or ancient artifacts. Some museums have permanent collections featuring centuries of clothing and accessories, while others launch special exhibits that focus on a particular trend in fashion. Here are a few museum options that will allow you to get up close and personal with some jaw-dropping ensembles and accessories this fall.

THE MUSEUM AT FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Seventh Avenue at 27th Street New York, NY 10001 FITNYC.edu/museum In a town packed full of world-renowned learning institutions, there’s one that’s school that stands out from the crowd: Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). The Museum at FIT completes the ensemble. From September 18 – December 5, The Museum at FIT’s Special Exhibitions Gallery will play host to “Fashion Underground: The World of Susanne Bartsch.” Bartsch has been one of the key movers and shakers of Manhattan nightlife since the 1980s, thanks in large part to her affinity for outrageous styles in fashion and makeup. The Swiss-born Bartsch came to New York by way of London and opened her Soho boutique in 1981, selling clothing and accessories from the likes of John Galliano and Leigh Bowery. Five years later, she was hosting parties at clubs like Savage and Copacabana, attracting an eclectic group of people from all over the city. This exhibit is a veritable love letter to Bartsch and her mutual love affair with fashion and New York City. FASHION FACT: Stay tuned this December for the opening of The Museum at FIT’s “Denim: Fashion’s Frontier,” which pays homage to denim in all its glory and its ever-changing history from durable workwear to indispensible fashion.

THE COSTUME INSTITUTE AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART 1000 Fifth Avenue (at 82nd Street) New York, NY 10028 MetMuseum.org Most people think of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in regard to the art that’s hanging on the wall, but don’t forget about the art that’s hanging on the rack. The Met’s Costume Institute houses over 35,000 costumes and accessories reflecting fashions of five continents dating back to the 15th century. The Costume Institute space underwent an extensive renovation and reopened in 2014 as the Anna Wintour Costume Center. The
Center is home to exhibition galleries, a costume conservation laboratory, storage facilities, and the world-renowned Irene Lewisohn Costume Reference Library. A visit to the Costume Institute is a feast for the eyes any day, thanks to two year-round tours offered. “Fashion in Art” focuses on costume history in relation to the Met’s armor, textile, sculpture, painting, and decorative arts collections. “Costume: The Art of Dress” is an audio guide spotlighting historical fashions throughout the galleries of the Met and is narrated by actress and “Sex and the City” fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker. FASHION FACT: Anna Wintour, the famous Vogue editor, is a trustee of the Met. Wintour used her clout in the fashion and publishing worlds to raise about $125 million over the past 20 years for the Costume Institute. B

NYC ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
“BEAUTIFUL” AND BEYOND: CHILINA KENNEDY By Roger Sands
Stage and screen icon Julie Andrews once famously said, “Broadway is a tough, tough arena for singing.” You wouldn’t know that by watching Chilina Kennedy perform. Kennedy, who currently stars as legendary singer/songwriter Carole King in Broadway’s smash hit “Beautiful,” unleashes a captivating performance in this demanding role. At curtain call the audience is on its feet, and people leave the theater singing, “I Feel the Earth Move,” a sure sign that something special has just occurred.
Photos: Joan Marcus
It’s no enviable task following a Tony award winner, but Kennedy – who replaced Jesse Mueller (Best Lead Actress) – doesn’t miss a beat, literally. She artfully modulates her voice with a richness that resonates throughout the Stephen Sondheim Theater. It requires a special talent to exhibit such vocal control, especially on a Broadway stage, but Kennedy seems very much at ease with her surroundings. Supported by a wonderful cast, Kennedy poignantly portrays King as a woman scorned by her two-timing songwriting partner and husband, but one who ultimately liberates herself from his cheating ways. King eventually finds her own voice with her masterpiece “Tapestry.” Kennedy, a native of Toronto, is no stranger to Broadway, having starred in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the classic rock opera by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Other credits for the talented actress have included roles in the national tour of “Mamma Mia” and “West Side Story.”
86 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
BELLA GOT A “BEAUTIFUL” ONE-ONONE EXCLUSIVE WITH KENNEDY… HOW MUCH DID YOU KNOW ABOUT CAROLE KING BEFORE THE PLAY? Honestly, I didn’t know very much at all and I had no idea that she had written all of those number one hits. Although I was a fan of “Tapestry,” I was surprised to learn just how prolific she was. I had the privilege of meeting her back stage after one of the shows, and she was so generous with her time, telling stories and playing the piano for us. YOU’RE ON STAGE A VAST MAJORITY OF THE TIME. DOES THAT PRESENT ANY SPECIAL CHALLENGES FOR YOU? I consider it a blessing and think of it as a moving train that you don’t get off of until the end. I like that about the play. It makes it very easy to keep your focus. I’ve been in other plays where there is a lot of down time back stage, but this one is action packed from beginning to end.
HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SHOW FRESH EACH NIGHT? That’s part of the craft, I guess. It’s important to have a different point of focus each night, and listening to the other actors really helps. You can’t recreate a performance, but it’s important to remember that it’s probably the first time the audience has seen the play. That certainly helps to motivate you. HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE RESIDING IN NEW YORK TO TORONTO? Actually, I’m not a big city girl. When I’m not working my home is in a small city near Toronto where I can sit on my deck and relax. New York and Toronto are two vastly different cities. It’s hard to compare them, but I love New York and the people are very warm and vibrant.
Chilina Kennedy as Carole King in Beautiful - The Carole King Musical on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theater Left: The current cast of Beautiful: Kennedy, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jarrod Spector, Scott J. Campbell
YOU AND YOUR PARTNER ARE RAISING A SMALL CHILD. WHAT’S IT LIKE COMBINING ACTING AND PARENTHOOD? It’s pretty fantastic. I have a wonderful partner who I met in high school, and he is very supportive. He’ll often bring in our son before the shows so we can have dinner or a snack back stage. Acting is really a great profession for a parent because I’m free most of the day in order to be with him and I’m working at night when he’s sleeping. ONE REVIEWER CALLED YOUR NEW ALBUM, “WHAT YOU FIND IN A BOTTLE,” PURE HONESTY WITH A SOULFUL TWIST AND PROFOUND LYRICS. DID YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC THEME IN MIND? The album is very personal and tells of some rougher times along with the better moments of the last 10 years or so. WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? I’ve always admired Joni Mitchell. Her lyrics are so interesting. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? Actors are always thinking about the next step, and New York City is a great place to be because there’s always a reading somewhere. However, I’ll be in “Beautiful” for awhile. B

BRIDGING THE BROADWAY GAP By Jaclyn M. Tacoronte
Founded in 2010, The Harbor Lights Theater Company has built an artistic bridge between Staten Island, NY and Broadway, bringing the nation’s best to work with their community’s finest. Executive Artistic Director Tamara Jenkins and Founder/Co-Artistic Director Jay Montgomery carefully select material to present in professional productions featuring scores of Broadway veterans, among them Tony and Emmy award winners and nominees, directors, designers, musicians, and choreographers.

The Harbor Lights Theater Company is the first and only Equity theater company in the history of Staten Island. Partnering with the Smithsonian Affiliate Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden and the historic St. George Theatre this season, Harbor Lights offers accessible and affordable professional productions on Staten Island.
This summer, The Harbor Lights Theater Company produced the all-time classic Gypsy, considered by most to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. Directed by award-winning Bill Castellino, the cast of Broadway veterans and local actors was be led by Tony nominee Sally Mayes starring as “Rose.” Adding to the magic, Harbor Lights presented this classic vaudeville masterpiece at an authentic vaudeville theater, Staten Island’s own gem, the historic St. George Theatre. With St. George’s new technical capabilities, the production showcased numerous set and scene changes, and created a fast moving kaleidoscope of music, song, and storytelling.
This fall, The Harbor Lights Theater Company will present Rent, the landmark 1996 Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical, at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. Harbor Lights’ production, again featuring a cast of Broadway veterans, kicks off the show’s 20th anniversary. Based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent transfers Puccini’s young artists to New York City’s Bohemian East Village and Alphabet City at the end of the millennium, instantly capturing a turbulent period in New York City’s history – a period marked by sweeping social change. Hugely influential both as theater and commentary, Rent is a celebration of art, friendship, love, loss, survival, and the contemporary struggle to find meaning in life. If you plan on visiting Broadway shows in the city, average single tickets can range anywhere from $70 to $300. The Harbor Lights Theater Company offers affordable and accessible options for the community ranging from $35 to $55 for a single ticket.

Enter Stage Right offers continuing classes year round, and a Summer Intensive for youth, ranging from ages 1118, that focuses on acting, vocal technique, theater dance, and song interpretation. Classes are taught by Broadway Master Teachers. B

THE NEW YORK LIFE
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SCENT OF NEW YORK CITY By Alexandra Anastasio
A passion for beauty and art inspired Laurice Rahme, the founder and president behind the infamous scents at Bond No. 9 that pay homage to New York City, to switch fields to something a bit more “sweeter.”
Born and educated in Paris, France, Rahme took an interest in the art and rich culture that surrounded her. She studied art history, worked for a well-known antiques dealer, and at one point opened up her own shop. But a desire to travel and experience the world led her to seek a new path, one that would allow her to combine the things she loved with a new direction. “After a few years, my passion for art and beauty took me into the heart of the beauty industry,” says Rahme. “It’s this background of art and authentic heritage that informs what we do at Bond No. 9 to this day.”
SETTING THE STAGE
In the 1970s, the future businesswoman and entrepreneur began her foray into the world of beauty, first working at Lancome as its international training director and then with L’Oreal when she assumed the role of director of the Lancome Institut de Beaute. Rahme’s entrance into the world of perfumes came from the opportunities to “work with some of the greatest names in the fragrance universe.” One of those greats was the famous perfume creator Annick Goutal, whom ignited her passion for fragrance. It is because of Goutal that Rahme moved to the United States almost 30 years ago to introduce the famed perfumer’s brand and creations to the US market. Transforming a small-scale business into an international success, Rahme was inadvertently laying the foundation for her future down the same triumphant path.
90 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
Since arriving in the Big Apple, Rahme has called New York City her home. “New York has incredible energy, like no other city,” she says. “It’s always fresh and new, and all of us who live here feel that constant renewing, fast-paced, forward-motion that sparks creativity. It’s those feelings that inform everything we do.” On September 11th, 2001, New Yorkers, along with the rest of the country, were tested in a way no one could have imagined. In the aftermath, communities came together and the unbreakable strength of a city was enforced. Fueled by a deep love for her home city, Rahme wanted to celebrate NYC’s courage and creativity by being courageous and creative. Out of this desire to breathe new life back into the wounded city came Rahme’s company, Bond No. 9. She launched with a collection of women’s, men’s, and unisex eaux de parfum in 2003. “It was a big risk, of course, but we had no fear,” Rahme recalls. “We followed our intuition and our desire to be different.” She and her team began creating fragrances to celebrate NYC’s neighborhoods and showcase the city’s unbreakable spirit. Their mission was to restore artistry to perfumery and give a scent to each neighborhood.

REDEFINING AN INDUSTRY
To Rahme’s big surprise and excitement, her business plan launched a whole new category in the fragrance industry: The Scent of a Place. “In the end I am just an artistic perfume creator at heart who believes that what we do brings a bit of beauty, hope, and delight back into the world.” Her main shop, located at 9 Bond Street in Manhattan’s NoHo (North of Houston), is in one of the most desirable and in-demand neighborhoods, hence the name of this now-famous company. In choosing the locations for her creations, Rahme keeps up-to-date on the real estate section of The New York Times as it describes the new and happening local neighborhoods. The spirit of a specific area is the inspiration her team aspires to capture and bring to life. Each bottle is a beautiful work of art, a collector’s piece, setting Bond No. 9 apart from other perfume companies. “Our packaging and our fragrances celebrate the uniqueness that is found in each neighborhood,” says Rahme. The company also offers custom blending to customers, mixed by blenders referred to as “Bond Perfumists.”

THE NEW YORK LIFE

Today’s consumers are looking for extraordinary products and are more interested in creative scents and packaging.” When Bond No. 9 first launched, Rahme envisioned her scents being strictly for New Yorkers; never in her wildest dreams did she think that 12 years later, the scents she created in an effort to heal her city would be available in 35 global markets. To date there are 72 scents, with collections covering NYC neighborhoods uptown, midtown, and downtown; I Love NY (baring the famous I Love NY logo celebrating the entire state of New York); New York Beaches; and a collection specifically designed for Harrods. Rahme’s latest fragrance, Park Avenue South, launched this past March, and features a fresh, flirtatious scent of one of the city’s most well known hotspots.
PAYING IT FORWARD
In addition to being the woman behind these scents, Rahme thinks it’s just as important as a businesswoman to interact on a personal level. She says she learns so much when meeting her fans. Rahme is also involved with the “I Love New York” organization, donating a percentage of sales from Bond No. 9’s I Love New York collection to the state of NY for funding of statewide programs, including recycling and park restoration. Like the city it represents, Bond No. 9 never rests: The line extends past perfumes to include candles, body creams, and pocket sprays. Always working on something new, Rahme is currently developing their next new scent. And while she loves all of the perfumes in her collection, she says, “the one I’m working on right now is my favorite.” What sets Rahme and her brand apart is uniqueness and energy. “Today’s consumers are looking for extraordinary products and are more interested in creative scents and packaging.” While the company remains true to its heritage and roots, Rahme’s goal is to keep collectors and customers intrigued, so the possibilities for the future remain endless.

“Very early in my career, Robert Salmon at L’Oreal told me two things that have been most important,” says Rahme. “First, always focus on creativity – all the rest will follow. Second, not to be afraid to be different. He always reminded me that it is important to be myself, not to follow, and not to look at what others are doing, but to find the path that is right for me.” B

TITLE You are one of the busiest men in Hollywood. Between flying all over the world to shoot covers of A-list celebrities and models for Vogue, GQ, and Harper’s Bazaar to major campaigns such as Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, and Gucci, you hold down quite a vigorous schedule. How do you manage your schedule and keep it all in check? I try to keep a balance and not let work control every aspect of my life, which is so easy to let happen. I eat healthy and play a lot of tennis, which gives me the energy and endorphins to get through the day. My incredible team helps me get from A to Z, and remind me of all the little details I might have forgotten. To be honest, I really love what I do so I never feel like I’m working. Tell us about your current book project 100 Making a Difference? What inspired you to do this project? 100 MAD features philanthropists who have started a charity and devoted their lives to making a difference in the lives of others. We went into the book with certain people in mind, but since working on it we have discovered many more people who are passionate about making a difference. I was inspired by all of the celebrities and unsung heroes who continually amaze me with their dedication and generosity. I wanted to not only meet them, but to photograph them and share their stories with the world. How do you choose the subjects you want to include in the book? 100 MAD features philanthropists working with all types of charities, but no matter the type, they have all devoted countless hours to their causes. We didn’t want to have the book full of celebrities who volunteered once at a soup kitchen (and called the paparazzi on themselves in the process!), but instead people who truly want to make a difference. We went into the book with certain people in mind, but since working on it, we have discovered many more people who are passionate about making a difference. Which subjects for the book most intrigued you? Each and every person is so fascinating in their own way! But actually, Petra, your story is so inspiring to me. [Němcová survived the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami by clinging to a tree for eight hours before she was rescued. Her then-finance lost his life.] So many people, if they went through what you did, would become bitter and resentful. But you took a bad situation and turned it into the Happy Hearts Fund, and have brought education, awareness, and joy to so many children. In this book, there are so many more people with this type of dedication.

Who are your dream participants? As far as celebrities, Oprah for Oprah’s Angel Network, Lady Gaga for Born This Way Foundation, and (selfishly!) Madonna for Raising Malawi. But in reality, I enjoy photographing the unsung heroes just as much as the celebrities. They have devoted their lives to these causes, and it’s nice to give them a moment in the spotlight and show them they are recognized and appreciated.
get to experience this, but my beauty line’s aim is to give the everyday woman a glimpse into this fabulous phenomenon. If a woman wakes up and puts on my fragrance, nail lacquer, and/or lipstick, she will go throughout the day feeling like a million bucks. And when you feel good about yourself, you are sure to make amazing things happen! You can find my line at luxury spas, hotels, and boutiques around the country. But visiting JohnRussoBeauty.com is the best place to start. You travel extensively. What are your favorite places, and why? My great grandparents are originally from Italy, so I have a very strong connection to Italian culture. The Amalfi coast will always be my favorite destination. I also have a home in Montecito, California, and even though it’s my own house, I will always feel like I’m on vacation when I’m there. It’s great to escape the chaos of LA! What make you happy in life? While a new house or new car might be fun in the moment, it’s my relationships with friends, family, and clients that bring real meaning and happiness to my life. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am.
SWEATER: MICHAEL KORS WATCH: ROLEX
Why are you so passionate about philanthropy? I think my passion for philanthropy stems from the fortunate life I have been able to live. I have a career I love, an amazing family and wonderful friends. Philanthropy inspires me because its goal is to help meet the needs of others in all different areas of their lives. It’s just the right thing to do. Are there any people you wished you would have photographed for the book but who have passed away? Would it be to cliché to say Mother Teresa? But really, she is one of the greatest examples of philanthropy in our day. Andrew Carnegie and his monumental efforts in promoting the arts have benefited millions, including myself. Also, Paul Walker and his work with Reach Out Worldwide was incredible. I hope to still photograph someone from his organization. Who have been your most memorable photo shoots? I’d have to say that shooting Gwyneth Paltrow in Paris for a cover of Vogue was one of my most memorable shoots. I have always been a fan of her work, both on and off screen. It was truly a defining moment in my career. I see you have a very successful beauty line call John Russo. What made you start this business? Where can we find your products? John Russo Beauty has been an evolution. Every photo shoot I work on has a hair stylist, a makeup artist, a wardrobe stylist, a manicurist, etc., and whomever I am shooting is totally pampered from the beginning of the shoot to the end. Most women will never
What inspires you? I think an easier question might be “What doesn’t inspire you?” because I can find inspiration in almost anything. I can be inspired by everything from the geometric shape of a plant to a scene from a music video. I also am very inspired by people and my interactions with them, whether they are friends or strangers. What quotes are closest to your heart and keep you motivated? You should see the camera roll on my phone – there are so many motivational quotes that I screenshot! Most of the quotes I’m drawn to have to do with finding the good in your life, and striving to be the best version of yourself. Two that I love are “It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full… Be grateful that you have a glass, and there is something in it…” and then on the same note, “While you were debating if the glass was empty or full… I sold it.” I think these show both aspects of my personality. I’m grateful for what I have, but I’m always hustling to make new things happen. What are the most important life lessons that you have learned and that you feel would help others? The journey to get where I am today was not easy. Throughout life, you will experience trials, roadblocks, and heartbreak, but these things mold us into the person we are meant to become. All the people in my book had the opportunity to make the hard decision or the easy decision, the obvious choice or the unexpected. It’s when we take chances and roll with the punches that we grow. What’s next for John Russo? Wow, what is next? World domination of some sort is on the horizon, I think! But really, I think I’ll stay on the track that I’m on and continue to make good things happen while surrounded by great people. I want to do a book called EPIC: The Work of John Russo that features some of my favorite photographs from the last two decades of my career. I would eventually like to have kids as well. I think fatherhood is an aspect of myself that I’ve never tapped into that could give me a new way of looking at life. Oh, and of course, meet a great guy to spend my life with. That would be the icing on the cake! B

“Everyone starts from somewhere,” says Hilton. Despite her status as a socialite now wedded to the scion of one of Europe’s most illustrious families, the accomplished model and designer remains humble and approachable. “You have to work your way up, I know,” she continues. “Beginning experiences learning the ropes will really shape you into the business person you become.” Hilton’s down-to-earth nature was on display upon her arrival for her exclusive BELLA photo shoot. There was no entourage, no publicist, no personal stylist or anyone other than Hilton dressed in a casual city style upon her arrival. She was just as confident fresh-faced as she was when her makeup was perfected and the camera started flashing. Hilton knows who she is, what she wants, and what she stands for. She may have been born into a wellknown family and background, but she’s spent her adult life establishing her own unique identify as a multi-talented designer, stylist, and businesswoman.
THE RADIANT CITY
Hilton’s many business collaborations take her from Los Angeles to London to Paris and back to New York, but for her, Manhattan matters most. “I’m a New Yorker at heart. I was born and raised here,” Hilton says. “I’m addicted to New York. I love everything about it – the good [and] the bad. It’s one of the most exciting cities in the world – everything’s happening here.” Hilton split her childhood growing up in Beverly Hills, the Hamptons, and New York, and attended the prestigious international college preparatory Dwight School on the Upper West Side. During her graduation, Hilton showcased her impeccable personal style and hinted at her blossoming future when she donned a custom-made dress designed by family friend, Vera Wang.
100 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
Instrumental in her fashion sense was her early exposure, along with sister Paris, to the New York and Paris fashion scene by her mother, Kathy. “I grew up modeling in New York City with access to some of the biggest designers and stylists along the way,” Hilton recalls. “I found my personal style in my late teens/early twenties. I started seeing what silhouettes and styles that I took to, and carved my own sense of style, which was pretty eclectic.”
STYLE SENSE & SENSIBILITY
Hilton has always remained the charming and demure counterpart to her notably more outgoing sister Paris. Fashion choices often reflect personalities, which is certainly the case with Hilton’s stylish and distinctive looks. It is that sense of style that brought Hilton to publish her acclaimed book 365 Style. Despite never having employed (or let’s face it – needed) a stylist, Hilton says it was her being put in the role of stylist for others that served as inspiration. “When the social media craze kicked off, I had so many people asking for style tips for different occasions that I thought, ‘Maybe I should write a book about this.’” Hilton defines her style as “sophisticated with an edge.” Her travels often influence her current style as she is able to locate distinct items in surprising locations. “I find my unique pieces when I’m travelling. That’s why I love going to flea markets and getting things I know that no one back home is going to have. I always call myself a style chameleon, since I love to change my look based upon my environment.” For her five fashion must-haves, Hilton emphasizes that less is more, recommending “ballet flats, a blazer, an oversized envelope clutch, nude heels, and a black pump.” While she says her looks between California and New York have a mix of influences, she emphasizes her supreme love of city fashion. “In New York, I love coats. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing underneath – as long as you have a fabulous coat on top, you’re perfect. I love wearing my boots, my coats, and my layers in New York.” For men’s style, Hilton again emphasizes simplicity. “I don’t like it when a guy looks like he’s trying too hard. That’s anything but effortless,” she says. “I love men in the classics – button-down shirts, sweaters, and blazers. You can never go wrong in those timeless pieces.”
A DESIGN OF ONE’S OWN
With a successful career in fashion and beauty, Hilton has collaborated with some of the premier labels to create lines that are distinctly her own. Her recent partnership with Smashbox Cosmetics has yielded captivating cat eye kits. Upon being approached by Davis Factor, co-founder of Smashbox, to collaborate, Hilton says “I immediately said, let’s make a cat eye kit. Let’s not make one, but three of them.” The new collection is nothing less than stunning. Each of the three kits is named after the cities where Hilton splits her time. There’s the LA Effortless Cat Eye, the New York Classic Cat Eye, and the London Ultra Mod Cat Eye. As for her favorite, Hilton says she wears the New York one the most. “I have blue eyes, so the brown shadows really complement them.”

Each set comes in a distinctive bag that doubles as a small clutch, mirroring Hilton’s own versatility and personality. “The kits come with a trio of shadow, mascara, and liquid gel liner. I went to the Smashbox headquarters in LA and sat in their lab for hours on end testing all of the makeup, pigments, and colors. When I was done, I said ‘I’m definitely designing a really cute kitty bag to go with it. It doubles as a purse, I wear mine out and throw my keys in it.”
One of my first jobs was interning for a glamorous magazine. On the first day, they told me I was going to take lunch orders and take out the trash, and I was fine with that.”
THE LOVELY BAGS
The dual cat eye collection bag/clutch is part of Hilton’s distinctive accessory designs. She first began designing handbags at the age of 18, and most recently collaborated with handbag, belt, and leather goods company Linea Pelle to design a collection that will debut in September. The NICKY HILTON x linea pelle capsule collection features timeless, yet fashion-forward pieces for everyday use, says Hilton. “As I got older with my design process, I wanted pieces to be in my wardrobe for years to come,” she says. “I tried to stick with timeless shapes in classic colors. In this collection, we did a lot of black and leopard – two strong color schemes for fall – with interesting shapes named after my favorite hotels. There’s the Waldorf cross-body, the Gallery fast pack, and the Mercer tote, among others.” The distinctive designs are a reflection of Hilton’s personal style sense she espoused in 365 Style. The 6 pieces reflect everything a woman may require – a backpack, round crossbody, frame bag, and others – and brings a versatile collection to the market just in time for Fall Fashion Week. As she describes the thought process behind the collection, we couldn’t help but notice the parallels to her own personality and sense. “I just wanted to make classic, really pretty bags you can wear in your everyday life.”
PRIDE, PREJUDICE & PARTNERSHIPS
Hilton attributes her accomplishments to the lessons she’s learned during her lengthy career in fashion and beauty. In addition, her strong work ethic can be seen in her multitude of collections and designs. According to Hilton, her career in fashion began much like others – as an intern. “One of my first jobs was interning for a glamorous magazine. On the first day, they told me I was going to take lunch orders and take out the trash, and I was fine with that.” “The lesson is to never think you’re too good,” says Hilton. Her advice to those trying to carve their own niche in this modern and fast-paced world is similarly “Never be too proud. Everyone starts from somewhere. Those beginning experiences learning the ropes will really shape you into the business person you become.” Those life experiences are what forged Hilton’s identity, she says, and provided her with a lifetime’s worth of insight and wisdom. The opportunities she undertakes are carefully selected and intentional. “I don’t believe in putting my name on a product I don’t believe in,” she explains.
Her collaborations are much the same. “A partnership in business is like a marriage. You have to spend a lot of time with your partners, and you have to like them.” Hilton’s personal admiration for various designers goes beyond the superficial. “I think Diane von Furstenberg is such an inspirational designer and woman.” She continues, “Before reading her book, The Woman I Wanted to Be, I didn’t know her mother was in a concentration camp. With all the hardships she’s overcome, it’s so incredible what an inspiring woman she’s become.”
MEETING BY ACCIDENT
Much like other aspects of her life, Hilton’s recent marriage to James Rothschild was the result of being in the right place at the right time, followed by dedication. Hilton met the scion of the Rothschild banking family at the 2011 wedding of Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone. “We met the old fashioned way – at a wedding – which I thought was sweet,” Hilton gushes. “He just came up to me and approached me after the reception. I was living in LA at the time, and he was in London – it was very long distance. We really enjoyed each other and just made it work.” Ever the man of tradition, Rothschild reportedly proposed to Hilton on one knee while on a boat in the middle of Lake Como, Italy, after having asked her father for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The fairytale continued, as the two exchanged vows at Kensington Palace in London this past July. Hilton wore a stunning Valentino dress and shared with us that she “dreamed of [Valentino] making a wedding dress for me ever since I was a little girl.”
A SECRET TOLD
Beyond her status as a jet-setting heiress traveling around the world, or her wonderful fashion-forward pieces, Hilton enjoys many of the simple pleasures. While a reservation at any table in the world is but a phone call away, Hilton says “I love to cook. I love making tacos or lasagna!” “I am most happy when I am home,” she says, describing herself as a homebody who enjoys relaxing, watching movies, and reading books. Given all that she has accomplished, Hilton has also worked out of the spotlight to promote many children’s charities, including the Make-a-Wish Foundation. She credits her upbringing as formative in her work with these causes. “I think since my parents exposed us to these charities at such a young age, it was a natural instinct to want to be involved and give back,” Hilton says. “I know I’m very fortunate, and I love being involved in helping these great causes.” B

CORY CONNOR DESIGNS WHERE EVERY SPACE TELLS A STORY By Alexandra Anastasio
What started out as a childhood passion has turned into a lifelong career for interior designer Cory Connor. When other little girls were playing with dolls, Connor was rearranging furniture and playing with color. Transforming interior spaces captivated this future designer who says her talents are all “self-taught” thanks to her creativity and passion.
106 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
Designing is a creative process that allows you to create these unique spaces. How do you go about transforming your client’s vision into a reality? It all depends on the client. If they have an idea of what they’d like it’s easy. If they don’t then I put together mood boards with different vibes to see what directly appeals to them. By looking at these boards I see what they do and don’t like, and it gives me direction on where to go next. The Internet has made it simpler for clients to find ideas and photos of what they’re visualizing. The best client is the one who says, “Do whatever you want.” They’re putting 100 percent trust in you, and I find the more trust a client has in me, the better the finished product. I find these rooms are the most wonderful.
Connor’s career began gradually with design projects she worked on for herself, and then for family and friends. Once her talents started gaining notoriety, word began to spread and she officially launched her company, Cory Connor Designs, in 2007. Currently based in Chatham, New Jersey, Connor tends to service local and neighboring towns to ensure her clients her 100 percent attention. She does have designs on flourishing and expanding into the future, of course. Connor says her work has been successful because she focuses on finding the right balance between combining the old with the new, vintage with contemporary. From the beginning stages all the way through completion, Connor’s keen eye and intuitive sense of the people she’s designing for play a major role in the overall plans, she says. “I strive for beauty that is both comfortable and functional, creating a unique and tailored space.” One of her specialties is furniture transformation – giving new life to the pieces of the past and creating a whole new flair for a room. BELLA had the opportunity to sit down with the woman behind some of the tristate area’s most beautiful transformations. Here, her inside tips and secrets to creating your own design story…
When you begin planning a design, what are the key elements you look to incorporate? Every room is totally different, it’s not “one size fits all.” You have to take into account everything when designing a space – the way they live, how they’ve decorated other rooms, etc. You want the overall look to be beautiful yet functional, and there are ways to do that. I call it the high/low; you have your larger items that are more costly but to balance that out you accessorize with items from stores like Target and Home Goods. Are there particular “must-have” items you believe every room should incorporate? Pillows! They give a nice added flair, and the beauty is you can change them out without being hard on your budget. Switching up your pillows can change the whole feel of a room. Focus on a neutral couch and then add the backdrop. It’s fine to be trendy, just do it with your pillows. What elements can someone bring into a room after it’s designed to fit with the changing seasons? Change your accessories, add some flowers to the room. Use the color of the season to incorporate subtle changes; nothing crazy that will shift the entire feel of the room.
September/October 2015 | BELLANYC.COM 107
Home design is often thought of as extremely costly. Is it possible to achieve an interior transformation without spending an exorbitant amount of money? Totally! There are so many places like Joss & Main and One Kings Lane. The flash sales allow you to get that sophisticated look but on a budget. Mix these pieces with other high-end pieces and you can’t tell what’s high or what’s low. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to accessorize; there are ways to get around spending a fortune. You do it all, from professional consulting on new construction and home renovations, to assisting clients with decorating for a special event. Do you have one particular area you enjoy the most? I love starting a room from scratch – having a blank canvas and working from the ground up to create a special place. I enjoy working with architects from the beginning stages. Looking at their designs allows me to visualize what each space will need and then share that with them. My job is to focus on the aesthetics and placement of furniture.
CORYCONNORDESIGNS.COM FACEBOOK, PINTEREST & HOUZZ: CORY CONNOR DESIGNS INSTAGRAM: CORYCONNORDESIGNS
What is your personal style? I love neutrals; grey is my all-time favorite color. It is the perfect backdrop for anything and then you can add pops of color. I like patterns but I prefer things to be subtle. When you think of beauty in relation to design, what comes to mind? A beautiful space is one where you can gather the whole family together. To me, cozy is beautiful. My favorite room to design is a family room and it circles back to the fact I love seeing people gather together. Home design incorporates a lot of different elements; what do you love most about the process? I love the whole “people aspect.” You get so entrenched with it and it’s fun developing relationships with clients and watching them enjoy their new space. It’s a great feeling seeing the transformation of something a client didn’t like before come to life. It’s a real nice sense of accomplishment. B

If you suffer from knee pain, you have lots of company. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 52 million Americans are told by their doctors that they have arthritis. Often, it’s a painful, frustrating, and life-limiting arthritis. As a Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, I’ve treated thousands of patients for knee pain. I always start with conservative treatment: heat or cold packs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Acetaminophen, and/or lowimpact aerobic exercises. I also work with my patients who need to lose some of that excess weight.
A NEW, NATURAL WAY TO TREAT ARTHRITIC KNEE PAIN By Didier Demesmin MD - University Pain Medicine Center, Somerset, NJ, New Jersey Top Doctor for 6 Consecutive Years
118 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
But sometimes the conservative approach doesn’t last and the pain comes back so much that my patient’s quality of life is affected. When that happens, we look to other approaches like steroid injections or hyaluronic acid (HA) injections to treat the arthritis pain. Both of those approaches work well, but are temporary fixes that may not be right for everyone.
My clinic was one of 28 clinics from around the United States to study this new, natural approach. Earlier this year I presented the interim results from all the sites at two major physician conferences. While still early, the results are very exciting. Here is a summary of what I presented at the Florida Pain Seminar and later, the American Pain Management meeting.
• Thirty days after receiving an injection of processed amniotic fluid, 84% of patients in our study reported that their pain had declined by 40% or more. • We asked patients to return again at three months, at which point, we discovered that 81% still had pain relief greater than 40%. • Six months later, the percentage of patients who reported their pain was lower by at least 40% was hanging in there at 67%. These were preliminary results, and not all patients will experience this kind of pain relief. Furthermore, the relief did tail off at the six-month mark. Nonetheless, this is very encouraging data. It tells us that amniotic fluid is a promising natural alternative to steroid injections and traditional hyaluronic acid injections. One of the effects of knee arthritis is that it breaks down your synovial fluid and takes away its ability to cushion and lubricate moving knee joints. Our hypothesis for the study was that amniotic fluid, very similar to healthy synovial fluid, would help restore natural lubrication and protection.
NEW TREATMENT FROM A SURPRISING PLACE
About a year ago I was asked to be a lead investigator in a clinical study for a new and very interesting alternative to either steroids or traditional HA injections. In fact, the new injection for arthritic knees I was testing may surprise you: It’s donated and concentrated amniotic fluid! Yes, amniotic fluid is what is normally discarded after women give birth to a new bouncing baby girl or boy. But we’ve since discovered that it may well have a second life post-birth as a treatment for arthritic knee pain. The donated amniotic fluid came to us from a company that collects it from women and thoroughly tests it for safety according to the FDA and American Association of Tissue Bank (AATB) guidelines.
WHY AMNIOTIC FLUID?
The data is telling us that it did that and we clearly saw patients with much less pain as a result.
There will be more testing, but with these results, amnio-viscosupplementation is now a part of my practice for patients with knee arthritis. After all these years of addressing the complex problem of joint pain, I can say that arthritic knee pain is very treatable, and there are several ways to minimize its effect on your life. For most patients, the conservative approaches work well. But when, despite your best efforts, the pain in your knee stops you from living the life you want, it may be time for something more.
First, it is discarded after birth, so it’s available. Second, it is very slippery and has almost all the same compounds (like hyaluronan, phospholipids, and cholesterol) that healthy synovial knee fluid has. Our theory is that using donated amniotic fluid to treat arthritic knees might just be an effective way to supplement the existing, but deteriorating synovial fluid. The result: improved lubrication and cushioning that can thereby reduce the stiffness and pain of an arthritic knee.
For more information about me, my clinics, or the amnioviscosupplementation study, visit upmcnj.com, or call 844600-7246 or 732-873-6868.

AN URGENT CARE CENTER THAT LOOKS AS GOOD AS YOU DO “Traditional” was not part of the design plan for the North Shore-LIJ/ GoHealth Urgent Care Centers that have been opening throughout Long Island, Queens, and Staten Island since 2014. The GoHealth centers have taken the typical boring and sterile design elements of most healthcare facilities and made it sleek, curvy, and inviting. These centers are designed more like an Apple Store than an Urgent Care. GoHealth treats most minor, everyday illnesses and injuries, much more than just colds and flus. With on-site X-ray and lab services, they can easily remedy sports injuries, household injuries, fractures, cuts, burns, rashes, infections, and viruses, as well as provide immunizations. For families, these facilities can also treat children and teens, and are a great option when you want to address the multiple needs of your family and your regular doctor is not available. For those on the go, GoHealth has early morning and extended hours, so busy parents and professionals can schedule appointments around work and school schedules. GoHealth welcomes walk-ins or has an online check-in process so you can be seen when it works for your schedule.
GoHealth’s waiting areas feature flat screen TVs to keep the kids (and you!) entertained, as well as individual charging stations for smartphones and laptops. Usually, you are escorted to a treatment room and met by a provider in less than 15 minutes.
GoHealth has created a new design model in the healthcare experience, replacing right angles with rounded edges and curves that guide patients through the care experience. Natural light, fresh flowers, and high ceilings complement these features and create a peaceful, inviting environment.
120 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
GoHealth’s exam rooms are 40 percent larger than traditional exam rooms. This means there is plenty of room for patients and their families or friends, if needed. Treatment rooms are entered through sliding doors that open and close seamlessly within treatment room walls.
GoHealth’s exam rooms feature state-of-the-art privacy glass, which turns from translucent to opaque with the flip of a switch to ensure patients’ privacy and comfort.
Technology is everywhere you turn at GoHealth. Whether it is their medical records integration system with North Shore-LIJ or the flat screen TVs in each exam room, patients and providers are always on the same page.

MIND+BODY GRANOLA & GREEN MILK
WOW SAKARA LIFE By Sari Beth Rosenberg
Sakara Life is the hot, new organic and vegan home delivery meal service loved by anyone who doesn’t want to sacrifice nutrition for a busy lifestyle. Taylor Swift, Lena Duhham, and Victoria’s Secret Angels, including Lily Aldridge and Erin Heatherton, comprise their growing list of celeb customers. Founders Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise (who look runway-ready themselves!) created Sakara Life when trying to get their own bodies back on track. The Sakara Life nutrition plan is comprised of hydrating foods, greens, good fats, “eating the rainbow,” and sulfur-rich vegetables. What isn’t included is calorie information. This omission is based on the philosophy that it’s unnecessary to count calories when you follow a whole-food, plant-rich diet, say Tingle and DuBoise. There are a variety of meal plan options that are delivered to your doorstep (in a cute bag with Instagram-worthy packaging!) by 6 a.m. every morning, Monday through Friday.

Our Sakara Life package contained delicious and nutritious Chia and Coconut Protein Waffles for breakfast, and a Spring Pea and Zucchini Salad for lunch with a Creamy Béchamel dressing that was surprisingly healthy. Dinner was another salad, the Green Caesar with Polenta Croutons, but since the dressing was loaded with hemp protein, a tasty and filling healthy fat, it left us fully satisfied and totally hooked on the idea of eating this way every day. We also got a pack of detox tea and two of Sakara’s signature waters: the Morning Water made with anti-inflammatory and soothing rose oil as well as silica that’s billed to give you a morning healthy glow. The Night Water, made from high quality alkaline water with trace minerals and chlorella, was the ultimate day-end detox drink. We could definitely get used to eating (and drinking) like this every day, the Sakara way!

MIND+BODY It is ideal for many areas, including the abdomen, “love handles,” thighs, upper arms, back, and neck. My SmartLipoTM liposuction patients recover quicker than with traditional liposuction, and with less bruising and swelling. In addition, the SmartLipoTM laser can also improve cellulite at the areas being treated.
The CellulazeTM laser has also been developed for the specific treatment of cellulite. CellulazeTM is a minimally invasive laser procedure that directly treats the causes of cellulite under the skin and delivers long-lasting results in a single treatment. Cellulite is the rippling and dimpling of skin, affecting at least 85 percent of women. Structural factors that cause cellulite include connective tissue bands surrounding fat cells and dimpling the skin, enlarged pockets of fat trapped by the bands and pushing against the skin, and thinning of the skin making the appearance of cellulite even worse. These can all contribute to the “cottage cheese” look of cellulite. Other factors that contribute to cellulite include aging, heredity, hormones, and weight changes.

PLASTIC SURGERY AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT LASER APPLICATIONS FOR BODY CONTOURING, CELLULITE TREATMENT, AND FACIAL REJUVENATION By Arnold Breitbart, MD, FACS
Since Albert Einstein first theorized the concept of the laser in 1917, and the subsequent development of the laser by scientists in 1960, lasers have enjoyed wide applications in science, industry, and medicine. Lasers have been used in retinal procedures, as a surgical cutting tool, and in skin resurfacing. Most recently, in plastic surgery, lasers have been used in body contouring, cellulite treatment, and facial rejuvenation.
In body contouring, lasers have been used to improve results in liposuction procedures. With traditional liposuction, a suction tube is used to suction unwanted fat. With laser liposuction, prior to the suctioning, a small laser device is inserted through a tiny skin incision into the fat. Laser energy is then delivered through the device to the fat and overlying skin, causing the fat to liquefy and the overlying skin to tighten. A small liposuction tube then removes the unwanted fat, which suctions out more easily and evenly, resulting in a much improved contour. In addition, there is better skin tightening than with traditional liposuction. In my own practice, I have been using SmartLipo TriplexTM laser liposuction as my liposuction technique of choice for the last several years. The procedure is done as an outpatient procedure under either local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia, with a usual recovery time of 1-3 days.
126 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
Previous cellulite treatments, such as creams, lotions, and skin surface therapies, had to be used repetitively, and only resulted in minimal temporary improvement of cellulite. CellulazeTM, however, directly treats the causes of cellulite under the skin using a specially designed SideLight laser to release the connective tissue bands, reduce the fat pockets, and improve the quality of the skin. CellulazeTM has been shown to deliver long-lasting results with only a single treatment. The procedure lasts about an hour and is performed under local anesthesia. Recovery time is typically no more than 1-2 days.
Precision TxTM (also known as LazerLift) is a minimally invasive laser procedure that has been developed for facial rejuvenation. It is ideal for patients with moderate face and neck laxity who do not want, or are not quite ready, for a more extensive surgical facelift. I perform the procedure under local anesthesia, where the Precision TxTM laser device is inserted under the skin through tiny incisions behind the ears and under the chin. Laser energy is then delivered to achieve tightening of the jowl and neck areas. I often combine it with liposuction of the neck to achieve a more optimal neck contour. Recovery is quite quick, typically 1-2 days. Lasers have revolutionized the field of medicine. In plastic surgery, in particular, lasers have substantially improved the results and recovery time of minimally invasive body contouring and facial rejuvenation procedures.

HOW TO GET BACK TO YOUR CORE THIS FALL:
INSPIRATIONAL TIPS FROM NITIKA CHOPRA By Sari Beth Rosenberg
As a motivational speaker and talk show host for the holistic channel Z Living’s “Naturally Living” and for QVC, Nitika Chopra exudes a happiness that’s contagious. Her effervescent spirit comes from overcoming 16 years of the debilitating and painful skin condition, psoriasis. Chopra shared her personal journey to a career as a wellness entrepreneur/motivational lifestyle guru/certified life coach as well as some helpful strategies for achieving center in your life this autumn. AN “A-HA MOMENT” AT THE BOTTOM OF HER CLOSET
Chopra was only 12 years old and ready to give up. Her painful skin condition, combined with bullying and poor grades, left her crying and praying on her closet floor. It was then that she experienced an “a-ha moment” – she could either see her skin condition as a punishment or as something bigger and not a reflection of her as a person. She opted for the positive perspective. This allowed Chopra to triumph over the pain and turn her discoveries into a career helping others.
FOR MORE INSPIRATIONAL WISDOM, CHECK OUT NITIKACHOPRA.COM WHERE YOU CAN ALSO LOOK OUT FOR HER UPCOMING EVENTS. HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE, AND CONFIDENCE IS KEY Chopra believes we need to make a choice to stay happy and not give in to our suffering. Additionally, lacking confidence is what she sees as the worst culprit for holding us back. “Any time I’ve held myself back it’s because I saw myself as this little girl who got bullied and not [as] my true self.” To build confidence and achieve your dreams, it is all about practicing daily self-love and staying centered, she says.
128 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
TAKE A “BOOKENDS APPROACH”
Chopra sees autumn as the perfect time to get centered after luxuriating in the relaxing days of summer. She recommends the following rituals and routines for the morning and evening bookends of your day.
BOOKEND #1. MORNING: 1) Find a song that relaxes you. Chopra’s go-to song is “I Am Light” by India Arie. “It makes me feel like my cells are taking a deep, centering breath.” 2) Take five minutes to clean up your surroundings – “it will make you feel less internally cluttered.” 3) Apply essential oils. She suggests frankincense and lemon as immediate mood boosters, or rose and sandalwood if you are feeling vulnerable or anxious.
BOOKEND #2. EVENING: 1) Turn it all off. Chopra explains that when you have 10-15 percent energy left you should turn off all electronics and lights to subconsciously signal that it’s time to wind down. 2) Focus on your skin. You get more inwardly focused when you take some time to apply your favorite creams, she says. 3) Make a “thankful” list. Keep a journal every evening that solely focuses on your inner workings, she advises, and “freewrite to get out any stresses, disappointments, or pent-up emotional energy.” Then, make a list of three to five things for which you are incredibly thankful. You will wake up feeling centered.
Chopra is so passionate about skincare that she recently teamed up with the creators of Biossance ™ The Revitalizer, a product that replenishes the skin by using one of the natural moisturizers already present in the human body. She also participated in The Embodied Project, which helps women live life to the fullest and nurture their health in mind, body, and spirit while elevating the beauty of their skin.

LOVE IN THE CITY
When it comes to technology, caller ID may be laughably old news but that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the single, best inventions ever created for keeping couples together. The simple act of knowing exactly who is calling (and when) quite literally erases any guesswork when it comes to modern communication. That might not seem like much, but when you only have enough battery to answer one call, guess who it’s gonna be? Double incomes and busy schedules more or less put a bullet through the 1950’s ideal of Lil’ Wifey in the kitchen making dinner. Still, all that really happened is the so-called traditional duties surrounding daily meal prep got chopped up and shared around between all involved. This is why take-out is so glorious. Only in a hyper-kinetic world like ours could a spouse get full kudos for spending five whole minutes buying, unwrapping, and then laying out a pre-cooked meal. That relationship goodwill can be purchased so cost-effectively is truly a modern miracle.
THE AGING PROCESS
Yes, we all spend big bucks on gyms, clinics, supplements, and more, waging an endless battle to slow the advance of old age. But why? Aging is actually one of the best ways ever to keep a relationship rock solid – and it’s allnatural! Watch as poor eyesight magically erases wrinkles, bad hearing shuts out annoying moans and complaints, and a bad hip casually makes a speed-walking partner finally slow enough to hold hands with. Mother Nature knows a thing or two!
10 THINGS ANYONE IN A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR Being in a long-term relationship doesn’t always come easy. You put in a lot of work year-round to keep things sailing smoothly, and that includes the little bits of help that seem to come your way every now and again. Not familiar with them? You should be giving thanks, because day in and day out these silly, little things might just be making all the difference. By Jarrod Thalheimer

THE BATHROOM DOOR
That large, wood rectangle does far more than you think it does. Not only can it provide enforced privacy when required, but it routinely hides away the foulest, most embarrassing activities we as humans get up to. Remember back when you were first dating how carefully you guarded what went on behind that door? No reason to stop now. It locked things down back then. Let it do the same today. Give thanks for the bathroom door. It works.
YOUR OWN FRIENDS
Nothing beats good, solid friends who belong to you and you alone. Long-term relationships mean lots of “us” and “we” – and that’s great, but so is having someone in your corner who only clicks for you. “Couple friends” can get confusing, especially when the pressures of life take a spike. Just like having the best attorney ever on retainer is important, a friend who exists only for you is a must – no matter what case is pending before the court.
THE WORD “QUIRKY”
Facing the same person year after year means you’re going to come across at least a few habits or characteristics that are downright crazy. Thankfully, having the word “quirky” available allows one to bundle up such unsettling horrors within a package of explanation far more plausible to the cocktail circuit. Sure, it’s funny and cute when she freaks out over a little bug, but screaming irrationally, throwing things, and running for cover whenever a bird flies within 10 cubic yards demands something stronger. “Quirky” it is!
Granted, having a steady relationship is what guarantees them in the first place, but in-laws are still something to be thankful for. Don’t think so? Well, does your partner chew with his mouth open? Not nearly as much as his father does. Is your sweetheart a tad passive-aggressive at times? She’s got nothing on her mother. Anytime you make a pilgrimage and visit the source of your long-time love’s idiosyncrasies you get to come away with a whole new appreciation for the version you shacked up with.
A DIGITAL PVR
Many a relationship has split in two over control of the television. Do you even remember the bad old days when only one TV show could be watched at once? How about the dawn of videotape recorders? Fumbling around with poor quality tapes, missed start times, and wrong channels recorded? Thanks to a non-judgemental hard drive that hunts, records, and saves, digital PVRs will ensure relationship harmony even within a universe of a million channels.
Watch as poor eyesight magically erases wrinkles, bad hearing shuts out annoying moans and complaints, and a bad hip casually makes a speed-walking partner finally slow enough to hold hands with.”
Noisy, smelly, and frustrating are just some of the adjectives related to the rearing of children. Don’t get me wrong – the gifts kids provide are many – but when it comes to keeping you two together forever, nothing beats the brats as common enemy #1. Just try to fight with each other when your snotty little son is having a tantrum by stuffing broccoli down his shorts. How about not laughing together as your daughter lies her butt off in the face of video proof? Spousal arguments of almost any kind are nearly impossible when kids double-down on the idiot-card. Be thankful for this developmental (and hopefully transitional) stupidity. It builds love – for you both.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but death is actually the greatest part about being in a long-term relationship. When you’re single, the biggest fear bouncing around your psyche is the possibility that you might somehow die alone without anyone knowing or caring. Well, guess what? Now that you’re in a long-term relationship, that little nugget of concern is officially dead and buried (sorry … had to do it!). That means you can be secure and happy in the knowledge that you are loved, appreciated, and no longer alone – and officially free to die whenever. How awesome is that?

“THE ART OF MEMOIR”
Mary Karr (HarperCollins) Karr’s 1995 memoir “The Liars’ Club” spent a year at the top of The New York Times bestseller list and is largely noted as the inspiration for the resulting frenzy of published memoirs. The author is a master of this literary form, having taught and mentored students at Syracuse for 30 years. This book, which features writer anecdotes and excerpts of some of Karr’s favorite memoirs, allows us to peer inside the head of a literary genius. Aspiring writers will especially savor the opportunity for a glimpse into Karr’s technique, but readers in general will also appreciate this reflection on story and memory.

His book also reminds us to laugh a little – or maybe a lot – at ourselves as we try to navigate this crazy journey we call life.

“THE NEW SINGLE: Finding, Fixing, and Falling Back in Love with Yourself After a Breakup or Divorce”
Tamsen Fadal (St. Martin’s Griffin) Emmy-winning TV host and journalist Tamsen Fadal’s divorce landed her on the infamous Page Six of the New York Post. It’s hard to wallow when your job is to appear before millions of viewers, so Fadal got up, brushed herself off, and rebooted her life into something better than ever. “The New Single” is her testament to the fact that not only can you survive heartbreak, but you can also remake yourself into a stronger, more confident person.
“THE NEW SINGLE” HELPS CREATE A NEW YOU AFTER HEARTBREAK Tamsen Fadal’s father once gave her some really great advice: “It’s far better to be alone than it is to be lonely with someone else.” The Emmy-winning news anchor wouldn’t truly understand her dad’s words until after her very public divorce from Matt Titus, with whom she had run a matchmaking service and co-authored relationship books. So she set out to make things right for herself again. “The New Single” is Fadal’s newest book about rebuilding self-confidence after a painful separation, with a focus on the first 90 days. “There’s no science to it but, for me, 90 days was not so long that I couldn’t get there and not so short that it didn’t make it become a habit,” Fadal explains.
“IT’S FAR BETTER TO BE ALONE THAN IT IS TO BE LONELY WITH SOMEONE ELSE.”
Fadal took it day by day, and encourages her readers to do the same. “It’s difficult. There’s no easy cure for it,” she says. “I did make sure every day, though, that I had a goal and that’s what got me through everything,” explaining that even little goals – such as eating healthy or meeting a friend for coffee – are the key to recovery after heartbreak. For many, moving on after a divorce or breakup often means finding someone new, which Fadal supports, although she stresses that’s not what “The New Single” is about. “It’s not about dating and finding somebody new. It’s about making sure you find yourself and keep yourself,” she says.

SALSA, SUN, AND OLD-WORLD GLAMOUR IN HAVANA By Maxine Albert Ever since I first saw the film “The Buena Vista Social Club,” with those suave romantic ballads crooned on Havana’s streets, I yearned to visit Cuba. The music, so rhapsodic, stirred my being; its sweet, sultry Latin sound was the very heart and soul of this storied locale. A sun-drenched tropical island with a rich culture and warm people, it’s now hotter than ever with the recent “opening,” and the fashionable and fabulous are taking note. It’s no surprise that America’s first couple of music royalty, Beyonce and Jay Z, celebrated their fifth anniversary in Cuba. In its heyday in the 1950s, glamorous Havana was the place to go, frequented by wealthy playboys, dazzling dames, and movie stars like Frank Sinatra and Eva Gardner. The dashing young Marlon Brando, a conga drums enthusiast, said he came to Havana because of the music. “The discovery of Cuban music almost made me lose my head.” The moment you de-plane, you too will feel the magic. Havana oozes beauty and romance. Its breezy seawall promenade, royal palm trees, fragrant orchids, and magnificent buildings with ornate carvings and wrought iron balconies – some being restored, others in varying states of disrepair – are sights to behold. Then there’s the excitement of seeing a place that’s been forbidden for more than five decades, a veritable time warp with vintage cars and some of the best music and dancing on the planet. You can’t help but be enthralled by the brightly colored 50’s Thunderbirds, Chryslers, and Cadillacs; many are taxis. Riding in these mint condition antique beauties, with cool sounds on the radio, is a signature Havana experience.
142 BELLANYC.COM | September/October 2015
Another must-do is taking a salsa lesson before dancing with the suave locals in Havana’s hot nocturnal haunts. My friend Laurie and I headed to La Casa del Son dance studio where we met our sultry Cuban teachers. The music started and Laurie’s partner, Lordanys, smiled, held her close and twirled her. My maestro, Ushua, more macho, gave me “the look” with his deep brown eyes, repeated that he was “the guy” and I must follow his lead, then winked.
WHERE TO STAY The 5-star Saratoga Hotel, the swankiest one in Havana, boasts posh suites and a glamorous rooftop terrace with swimming pool and bar, knockout mojitos, and panoramic Havana vistas. We finished our salsa-thon quite thirsty, so we zipped over to the famed Floridita, Ernest Hemingway’s Havana hangout. Photographs of the famed author adorned the walls of the bar where the lime daiquiri was created. Los Hombres, a band of four handsome guys, sang “Besa me Mucho” while we downed the delicious concoctions, the best in town. Close by you’ll find Hotel Ambos Mundos where Hemingway stayed in Room 511 while writing “For Whom The Bell Tolls.” I gazed at his very typewriter, then went up to the roof to enjoy mojitos and glorious views while a live band, Los Reinos, serenaded us. By day, I took in the city’s wondrous sights, walking the winding cobblestone streets and splendid historic squares of Old Havana, leafy Plaza de Armas with its outdoor book market, and the lively, tree-lined Paseo del Prado, marveling at the colonial and art deco architecture. After meeting with local artists and visiting the superb Habana Compas Dance Company, I rode in a cherry red 1957 Chevy convertible to the legendary Nacional Hotel for a Cubanito (bloody Mary with rum) at the bar. Nights in Havana are sexy, with visitors and locals strolling the dreamy
seafront boulevard, the Malecon, caressed by gentle breezes off the bay. On the streets and in clubs and bars such as Casa de la Musica and Café Taberna, lovers dance to the sound of the Buena Vista Social Club and Guantanamera, or kick up their heels as they rumba, salsa, and cha cha. Nightclubs like the Cabaret Parisien and the Tropicana, where Beyonce got up on stage with the gals, offer entertainment extravaganzas with showgirls and costumes galore that hark back to Havana’s golden era. The annual Habaños Cigar Festival has become quite the social event, attracting jetsetters and celebrities who turn Havana into party central. Joining this year’s soiree, Paris Hilton posed for a photo in front of grandfather Conrad’s original Habana Hilton Hotel, now the Hotel Habana Libre, and Tweeted “Cuba Baby!” before taking a selfie with Fidel Castro’s son. Following in the footsteps of Bey and Jay Z, I made my way to Havana’s most famous paladar (privately run restaurant) La Guarida, located on the top floor of a rundown tenement. Upon entering I found an elegant eatery with German silver cutlery, striking objets d’art, and a wall of photos of notable guests like Queen Sofia of Spain, Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, and Benicio del Toro, to name a few. Amid a fashionable crowd, I dined on luscious lobster and papaya lasagna and snapper carpaccio paired with fine wine. At Paladar Los Mercaderes rose petals strewn on marble steps lead to a charming pink room with stained glass windows and beautiful chandeliers. A violinist played romantic music while guests savored specialties like 12-hour roasted spare ribs. I found Havana to be a jewel box with precious gems nestled in every corner. B

LA Living By Dionne Clarke
WEST COAST LIVING FOR EAST COAST DWELLERS ... THE BEST OF WHAT TO DO THE NEXT TIME YOU’RE IN CALIFORNIA.
RANCHO VALENCIA ROCKS There will not be adequate words to fully describe the splendor that is Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa, but suffice it to say – it’s nirvana! Two hours south of Los Angeles, in a little town called Rancho Sante Fe, sits 45 acres of lush gardens with 49 luxuriously appointed casitas on the all-suite property in what is Southern California’s only Relais & Châteaux. The exquisite Mediterranean-inspired living spaces are nestled amongst orange trees and olive groves. I stayed in the 1,300-square-foot Valencia Suite, which has a master bedroom with king bed, separate living/dining area, fireplace, microwave, spacious bathroom with deep soaking tub, heated Toto toilet seat, and double vanity. And if that wasn’t enough, the large, private wraparound patio with outdoor fireplace and hot tub will be sufficient for you to become so ensconced that you’ll never want to leave. No, seriously… I really didn’t want to leave! The vaulted high ceilings, wood beams, wrought iron fixtures, hardwood floors, and peek-a-boo shutters that open up to an onslaught of natural light is the perfect sanctuary to enjoy everything Rancho Valencia has to offer. And less we forget … the fleet of Porsches at the resort for use at guests’ disposal just takes Rancho Valencia deliciously off of the luxury hotel edge making it one of my absolute favorite places in SoCal. Bravo! THE SPA AT RANCHO VALENCIA The Spa at Rancho Valencia is perfectly designed to invigorate and relax you to the core with its alluring treatments to rejuvenate the body, enrich the mind, and soothe the spirit.
The Citrus Supreme treatment is a must beginning with a mandarin exfoliation, which you rinse off in the oh-so-sexy outdoor shower. Come back inside to be cocooned in a citrus soufflé mask and cream application. The antioxidant facial rounds out the 135-minute blissed out treatment.
Using the best herbs, flowers, oils, and minerals, The Spa is a true haven to give you stillness and peace from the hectic world outside. Lush gardens and palm trees envelop the outdoor pool. You can also enjoy their rejuvenating steam and sauna rooms, dedicated yoga studio, award-winning tennis program, bike rides, and more from the wellness-orientated fitness program.
VELADORA With a farm-to-table philosophy and focus on creating a menu from ingredients locally grown, you really can’t go wrong with anything you choose from the menu at Rancho Valencia’s signature restaurant Veladora. The olive oil, herbs, and honey are all cultivated right on the Rancho Santa Fe property, ensuring the freshest and most sublime tap dance on your taste buds. The delicious Coastal Ranch cuisine in the beautifully designed hacienda-style dining room is the perfect setting to indulge while taking in the valley views. Highlights are the Poached Main Lobster & RV Citrus Salad, Hawaiian Mero Sea Bass, and the Chateaubriand served with parmesan black truffle bread pudding and fondant potatoes. RANCHOVALENCIA.COM

THE NEW YORKER
DR. TABASUM MIR
New York physician and beauty expert Dr. Tabasum Mir has been ahead of the curve her whole life, beginning at age 12 when she enrolled in high school in Michigan. After graduating from NYU and building her practice, she expanded her brand to include her own skin care line, MirSkin. She carries her passion for health into the charity world, offering her time, talents, and funds to a host of philanthropic organizations, including Operation Smile and Charity: Water. This NYC beauty doctor let BELLA in on what beauty and life in NYC mean to her ... 1. Best thing about living in NYC? I really love how there is any opportunity you need here at your fingertips. Anything you desire you can get here. 2. Favorite restaurant? I love Nobu! It’s always good, and I don’t even have to look at the menu before I order! 3. Favorite neighborhood? Union Square. To me, it’s the center of the city. When I was in training at NYU Medical Center, I was living in Murray Hill, but as soon as I graduated, I moved to Union Square and I finally felt like I lived in NYC. 4. The best part of my job is… Seeing how happy and excited my clients are after a treatment – that’s definitely one of the best parts. I love getting the happy emails and texts thanking me after. It makes me happiest to see I’ve made other people’s lives better. 5. A visit to New York isn’t complete until… You walk through Central Park. 6. Subways or cabs? Cabs! I can take phone calls, answer emails, and get to where I’m going! 7. Best advice you’ve ever received? I once told my mom that I wished sometimes I could be like other girls we grew up with. They seemed to have it so easy and were so content being married and having kids. She said to me, “You weren’t made that way, so why bother feeling bad about it? You are who you are; wear it proudly!” 8. One “must-have” beauty item? Lip gloss. 9. How do you define beauty? I feel most beautiful when I’m laughing. Happiness is true beauty, when you are smiling from your soul. B
