FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF It’s the most wonderful time of the year … SUMMER! I love everything about it: the warm, gorgeous days, traveling with the family, and of course our summer Hamptons party in August! When I was preparing for this issue I spent a lot of time thinking about who I would want to host our annual event, and Lisa Vanderpump was the first to come to mind. Not only is she the beautiful star of two of BRAVO’s hottest shows, but she is also a successful restaurateur, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and advocate. Really, she is the embodiment of the BELLA woman, and I was thrilled when she agreed to do it! We shot Lisa’s amazing cover story with the uber talented celeb photographer John Russo at her Beverly Hills home in May, and the images were so stunning, I decided to turn it into an eightpage feature (our first), as I couldn’t bear to cut any of it. I think you will be as blown away as we were when you read it!

Courtenay C. Hall EDITOR-IN-CHIEF @CourtenayCHall @CourtenayHall

But that’s just the beginning of the summer star wattage in our annual Hamptons issue! We have a wonderful “Stars of Summer” feature, in addition to two of this season’s hottest male stars, Juan Pablo DiPace of “A.D.” and Adam Rodriguez of “Magic Mike” and “Empire.” Now that’s a star lineup, all written by BELLA’s amazing Entertainment Editor Alexandra Anastasio, who always delivers an exceptional in-depth piece. You know the ones – where you finish reading feeling like you truly know a lot more about the person than before you started. That exclusive access is what BELLA’s all about. We love to provide our readers with an inside, behind-the-scenes look at their favorite stars. Another exciting addition to this issue is a new page called “My Favorite Things,” where I’m showcasing brands and products I cannot live without this season. It’s fun and flirty, and I hope you enjoy the recommendations I’ve personally handpicked. Check it out on page 26. As always, you will find everything you need to live your most BELLA life within this issue: Beauty, Fashion, Travel, Wellness, Celebrity, Arts & Culture, Dining, and some amazing Around Town pages, where we highlight our memorable BELLA events both in NYC and LA. In fact, we co-hosted our first LA event this past May with contributor Jordana Woodland at her gorgeous Naked Princess Flagship store. It was a huge success; see for yourself on page 150! Yes, the BELLA brand is expanding to the west coast, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! I hope you all have a fantastic time during these summer months (I know I will), and I look forward to your feedback on the issue. Safe travels, and be well!

A great taste to discover

THE STYLE REPORT Shoshanna Odessa Dress, $395,

Shoshanna Eugenia Maxi Dress, $560,

By Laura Camerlengo

Native New Yorker Shoshanna Gruss revolutionized dress departments in 1998 when she launched her eponymous figure-flattering collection, Shoshanna. Since then, Gruss has continued to make waves in the marketplace, from the debut of her innovative swimwear line in 2001 – the first to have lingerie-inspired sizing – to the recent launch of her eveningwear line, Shoshanna Midnight. BELLA sat down with the busy fashion mogul to talk about her new collection, summer fashion, and dressing for the Hamptons. Listen in…

You started your fashion line in 1998 out of frustration that there were few clothing options for well-endowed women – a frustration that you had experienced first-hand. What pushed you to launch your label? I was pretty young when I launched my label – it wasn’t part of my plan. I had attended college at University of California, Los Angeles, and worked for a boutique called Tracy Ross. It was one of the first curated clothing boutiques, and the boutique at the time. For years, I had a hard time finding clothes that worked for my shape, and that weren’t overtly sexy or matronly. While working at Tracy Ross, I saw a lot of young designers come in and show their lines, and that sparked the idea to launch my own label. I saw that you could build something out of a good concept and with decent samples. Although I didn’t have the background or training for this – I had thought I would work in finance after college – I had this feeling in my tummy that creating my own label was something that I should do. I just couldn’t shake it. I knew that this idea of a clothing collection that was inclusive of all women’s shapes would strike a nerve with a lot of women – and it did. How does your desire for figure-flattering clothing continue to inspire your collections? It’s always our goal to create collections that are as inclusive of many body types. When I started my collection I was designing everything by myself, but now I have a great team of designers and we all work together to make sure that our designs suit many shapes. We don’t only ask the question, “Where would you wear this?” but also “Who is wearing this?” We want to create clothes that look as good on a 15-year-old girl as they do on a 45-year-old woman. A design is not just a piece of artwork, but something that will accentuate a woman’s shape and make her feel beautiful, confident, and celebrated.

24 BELLANYC.COM | July/August 2015

You revolutionized the swimwear industry in 2001 when you created swimwear separates inspired by lingerie sizing. When did this idea come to you? I was so extremely curvy that I had to have all of my swimsuits custom-made, and the process was very expensive and time-consuming. I thought, “You don’t buy your bras and underwear as a set – swimwear should be like that.” Our first line had 13 top sizes, with two sizes for each cup size, and seven bottom sizes. I had lots of push back from stores at first; many were concerned that they would have leftover stock from tops and bottoms that didn’t sell. I was confident that women would respond well to the collection, and offered to take back items that didn’t sell. The line was very successful, and put the Shoshanna label on the map even more. As a young woman, it was great to be three years into a collection and to have a boom. Swimwear shopping is difficult for many women. What advice can you offer them for finding a swimsuit that suits their shape? I think it’s important for women to find the part their body that they like best and highlight it. We create about 10 to 15 different tops for our line, but I know that only three or four of these fit me best so I stick to those. I like bikinis; they break up my body and make me appear taller. Figure out what works for you and stick to that. And when in doubt, a well-fitting black bikini is always flattering. Tell us about your summer 2015 line. What inspired this collection? I love bright colors, especially in the summer, and those appear a lot in this collection. There is a bohemian spirit to the designs for this season, and we have picked up on that with beautiful beadwork, great colors, like mint, blue and green, and paisleys.

Shoshanna Gruss

spent a lot of time out there – for camp, then working. I lived with my parents in New York City for a long time, but bought my first house in the Hamptons when I was 23-years-old. I love it out there. I work out there in the summer with my kids; it’s a beautiful, relaxing, and very special place. My family and I have an amazing time – It’s a great place to unwind. Have your experiences in the Hamptons influenced your designs? Yes, definitely. The Shoshanna collection has a very clean, classic feel but with a preppy undertone and a little edge. Growing up in the Hamptons, I have been inspired by the area’s colors and that oldschool-Hamptons feel in combination with the bohemian feel of places like Montauk and Sag Harbor. All of this is part of my personal fabric and aesthetic as is growing up in New York City. I love gingham but I also love black with grommets.

Shoshanna Halter Bralet Top, $105, and Hipster Bottom, $96,

Bright happy colors appear a lot in our summer Mommy and Me line as well; my oldest daughter, Sienna, helps me with that collection. It’s great to have her point of view on the designs. This issue spotlights New York’s favorite summer spot, the Hamptons. As a born and bred New Yorker, have the Hamptons always been a part of your life? Yes. My parents have had a place there for years, and I have

Let’s say my girlfriend is heading to the Hamptons for the weekend. What three items from your summer collection should she pack in her suitcase? She will likely spend most of her day on the beach, so she will need a bikini. She will also need an awesome day to night cover up – a sexy, flowy dress with an elastic waist can easily transition from the beach to dinner with pretty sandals and fun earrings. And she should pack one cocktail dress just in case she gets invited to an awesome party. I’d also pack one to two pairs of sandals, a great pair of heels, and a straw bag. After 17 years in business, what are you looking forward to next? I am always surprised and excited by what happens next. Two years ago I signed with Elizabeth Arden, which has been an amazing partnership. I am collaborating with Club Monaco, which is fantastic. We found that women are increasingly interested in cocktail and evening dresses, so we just launched an eveningwear line for Shoshanna. I am always looking for what’s next, and look forward to continue to move forward and enjoy my work. I am very grateful.

From the Desk of the EIC

A modern woman is constantly on the go. Balancing it all and looking fabulous while doing so can be a daily challenge. Here are some of my fashionable summer suggestions. Exude confidence and strength while creating your look. Make it appear effortless by wearing a fashionable, yet versatile ensemble. Begin with a flattering dress that takes you from desk to date. Add a touch of glamour with sleek and distinctive jewelry. Dab a signature scent, carry a neutral statement handbag, and finish the look with a nude sandal to elongate your legs. Take each day on with style!

Weighted skin care in summer heat can feel like torture, but don’t assume a warmer climate means your skin doesn’t need TLC. Store away your heavy moisturizer for a few months, but switch to a hydrating serum before bed and a lightweight lotion during the day.

Janene Mascarella BELLA’s Beauty Director recommends…

Touch In Sol Feel Like Honey Moon Skin Base $24, Sephora

SPF is crucial all year long, but daily use is especially necessary in the summer because our skin is more frequently exposed to harmful rays. These rays are the number one accelerator of lines and wrinkles! It’s worth an extra layer and one more step to save your skin!

REMOVE THE MASK. Thanks to groundbreaking technology, we can expect more from our foundation. It should not be used to cover, but to perfect. You can have it all! Look for a lightweight foundation that has sheer coverage and long wearability (usually a demi-matte finish). Use a dab of concealer on blemishes or spots to add coverage instead of opting for a full coverage foundation. But please don’t hide your beautiful freckles!

Achieve a natural sun-kissed look with a liquid or cream blush. It will feel lighter on the skin and beat out powder blush’s staying power in the midst of heat and humidity by hours.

What’s your makeup wardrobe for summer? A wool coat in 80-degree weather is just as out of place as a full coverage, hydrating foundation. With temps rising, it’s time to reassess your beauty products and shed those winter layers! The right formulas for face, lips, and eyes will bring out your natural beauty – without the weight! Most have Shea butter or vitamin E to condition, and some will even have SPF to protect your pout! No matter how bold you go, the application doesn’t require a mirror, so you can apply poolside or even while cycling through Central Park.

It's important to give your face a rest, so once a month I indulge in a face mask with all-natural ingredients. My favorite is from Aniise, whose mask is so natural that you could even eat it!

My go-to makeup look is a matte lipstick. I wear them on a daily basis and love them so much that I came out with my own line, a collaboration with Aniise Skincare. They're all mineral, long lasting, and most importantly cruelty free. To ensure they stay on all day, I also use my line's lip conditioner at night to get a soft plump pout.

On days that I haven't gotten a good night's sleep and my eyes look puffy, I use a cold tea bag or chilled cucumbers to put on my eyes. This helps reduce my eye puffiness. I'm also a huge fan of the Glam Glow Eye Treatment which achieves similar results!

Hamptons 2015 For me, summers out east are all about entertaining at home and avoiding the overcrowded restaurants. Although some of the places have changed, many have stayed the same. My food shopping routine has remained constant since I got my driver’s license many moons ago. My first stop is always the open-air Farmer’s Market in the parking lot of Nick & Toni’s (136 North Main Street, East Hampton, 631-324-3550) for cheeses and olive oils. Art Ludlow, the owner of Mecox Dairy, sells his homemade cheeses from their own cows at this market. The gouda and cheddar are second to none.

Round Swamp Farm

62 BELLANYC.COM | July/August 2015

For the best mozzarella in the world, I head to Red Horse Market (74 Montauk Highway, East Hampton, 631-324-9500, You wait on line watching Pasquale Langelle, one of the owners, make it. When he is done, he hands mozzarella out in small, still warm, batches. My next stop is Round Swamp Farm (184 Three Mile Harbor Road, East Hampton, 631-324-4438, They now have an outpost in Bridgehampton, but my favorite is the original store in East Hampton where the owners walk around, helping people. Everything is delicious, but the chicken dumplings are my daughter’s favorite – I can’t keep enough of them in the house. Lisa, another member of the Round Swamp family, makes perfectly crispy, bite-sized, nut-free chocolate chip cookies. The family that started it still owns it. Claire and Carolyn are behind the counter calmly dealing with the lines that usually circle around the shop. Don’t be put off, they move quickly.

The Seafood Shop

If I’m planning a seafood meal, The Seafood Shop (356 Montauk Highway, Wainscott, 631-537-0633, is my go-to for lobster and fresh fish. One of my favorite dishes during the summer is grilled fish. I’ll buy whatever they tell me is fresh off the boat and throw it on the grill with a little olive oil, fresh squeezed lemon juice, salt and pepper. When I’m feeling lazy, I buy their cooked, cracked boiled lobsters and serve them, as is, at room temperature with melted butter and the shop’s tartare sauce for dipping. I also live for their homemade soups, in particular the seafood Thai curry. A daily must-stop for this foodie is Loaves and Fishes (50 Sagg Main Street, Sagaponack, 631-537-0555, I love their fresh fruit pies, and their homemade baguettes are out of this world. I serve them with cheese – if my children don’t get to them first. Loaves and Fishes is justifiably famous for its lobster salad, but be warned, it’s $100 per pound!

In New York By Boston Scarlette

Paris has long been an American obsession since the Broadway hit “Gigi” premiered in 1951 with the infamous Audrey Hepburn. Now, with Tonywinning “An American In Paris” wowing everyone on Broadway, there’s been a revival of French culture and a new generation of “Francophiles.” The Paris-New York connection is stronger than most realize and can be found in the Highline vs. Culee de Paris, Washington Square Arch vs. Arc de’ triomphe, even the Statue of Liberty! (Paris is home to two smaller replicas of The Statue of Liberty, with the one near Grenelle Bridge on the Île des Cygnes facing toward New York City.) Get ready to trade in your coffee for espresso, bagel for croissant, and cupcake for canelé, and make it a Parisienne summer. Here, the top 10 magnifique ways to experience Paris In New York!

Inspired by Vicente Minnelli’s Oscar-winning musical film “An American In Paris,” starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, director Christopher Wheeldon and Pulitzer Prize-finalist Craig Lucas pay tribute with a new balletic musical on Broadway. Before making it to Broadway’s Palace Theater, the ambitious playbill first premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris at the end of last year. Now, lead actors Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope have New York falling in love with Paris. Make sure to grab your tickets fast!

The Upper West Side has recently seen a shift from restaurants to fashion stores, with Comptoir des Cotonniers, Maje, Sandro’s, and the newest member IRO taking residence along Columbus Avenue. Sandro’s presents many modern, French-inspired answers to the little black dress – our favorite is the Rollander Dress (retail $495). Pair it with the Velcro Activity Sandal (retail $375), and you have the perfect look for taking an evening stroll on the High Line before dinner.,,,

Pirette Hunter, Maille’s U.S. Mustard Sommelier, assists customers in discovering new flavors and recipes to enjoy them. They feature about 24 flavors on shelves and four on tap – yes, on tap! Jars from the on-tap collection can be refilled at any Maille location across the globe. Our favorite is the limited edition Sauternes – we love its fruity and light palette. You can also choose from the White Wine Summer Collection: Toasted Onion with Thyme, Lemon and Garlic, and Fine Herbs – and taste the heritage of Maille in this sleekly-adorned boutique decorated in Maille’s signature black and gold colors.

Le District is a mega-shopping complex of French food galore with exclusive finds like Epices de Cru artisanal spices and Theordor Tea from Paris. There are four districts to peruse, but we were lost for hours in La Cure Gourmande, picking out individual biscuits to make our own tin. Another great highlight at Le District is the Boucherie where you can choose from excellent meats to take home or eat on the spot. Working in FiDi? Make sure to grab a leg of lamb sandwich from the Rotisserie for lunch – it’s become a district favorite! And don’t forget to bring home flowers by Yasmine, whose work is inspired by childhood memories in Provence, France.

Miniature canelés are Paris native Céline’s trademark and “delish” according to Chef JeanGeorges Vongerichten! His interest in where she was selling them sparked the idea for the boutiquesized shop now on the Upper East Side. There are so many savory and sweet flavors, including our favorites – orange and caramel. Summer flavors include peach, fig, and raspberry. What makes Canelés by Céline even better? The minis are only 25 calories!

Presented by the French Institute Alliance Francaise, this is the ultimate féte of the summer. On Sunday, July 12th, Francophiles will come together at 60th Street (between 5th and Lexington) to celebrate Bastille Day – France’s Independence Day. There will even be a drawing to win a trip to France!

A canelé is made from eggs, sugar, milk, flour, vanilla, rum, and a lot of love into a petite cake-like pastry with a custard center and crispy caramelized dark crust. It originates from the Bordeaux region of France but is served in many Parisian pâtisseries! Continued

Racines NY

Dirty French

French cuisine has seen a resurgence in Manhattan with exciting new spots, keeping the Bistro spirit of Paris alive. Dirty French, located inside the Ludlow Hotel, has taken brunch to a whole new level with their duck hash. Imagine moist, shredded duck, scallions, peppers, and potatoes all smothered in two over-easy eggs! It’s pure Parisian lip-licking heaven! Racines NY is a French “neo-bistro” in Tribeca thanks to its extensive natural wine list. It parallels its sister restaurant in Paris under the direction of three partners: Sommelier Arnaud Tronche, David Lanher, and David Lillie. With over 40 wines offered by the glass (we recommend letting Arnaud help choose the perfect one!), make sure you grab a seat at the Chef’s Counter so you can see Michelin star Chef Frederic Duca in action! Pardon My French also offers wines a la ficelle (by the glass), but what they bring to the table is three separate dining experiences – the front room, main dining, and an adjacent speakeasy with cocktail creations by Mixologist Simon Sebbah. The Aviation is a showstopper as the bartender ignites the absinthe. This summer, the real allure is the outside back patio, where you can dine on Executive Chef Guilherme Barreto’s menu in a hipster chic atmosphere. PMF.NYC

In Paris and On “Pointe” At age 17, actress Leslie Caron went from being a Parisienne ballerina to Hollywood royalty. The French Cheese Board is a first floor gallery space devoted to French Cheese. It’s the site of a variety of collaborative pop-up events, the most provocative being a collection of photographs for Les Filles a Fromage, a women’s cheese club. These photos showcase prominent French female athletes sporting haute fashion and sexy poses with cheese (our favorite is of Elodie Clovel). With 1200+ cheeses available in France, French Cheese Board has narrowed it down to a small in-house collection that rotates monthly. B

BEYOND BROADWAY By Barbara Bellesi

Broadway might be considered by most to be the center of the American theatre universe, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only place that has coveted tickets. In fact, if you set your sights east of The Great White Way to Long Island, you’ll find a wealth of theatres dedicated to the performing arts. If you’re looking to avoid the drama of a traffic-filled commute or the summer tourist crowds in the Theatre District, here are three options to titillate your theatrical side right on Long Island.

The John Drew Theater at Guild Hall

158 Main Street, East Hampton, NY 11937 Founded in 1931 Guild Hall is a veritable Titan in the world of the performing and visual arts in that it not only provides outstanding entertainment, but also promotes the work of artists on Eastern Long Island. Founded in 1931 by Mrs. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse to serve the cultural needs of the community, Guild Hall now greets over 40,000 visitors each year to the hundreds of shows, films, lectures, readings, and more that are offered. The John Drew Theater, housed in the Dina Merrill Pavilion, is just one element of Guild Hall that keeps audiences flocking to East Hampton season after season. In fact, there’s something going on just about every evening during July and August. For another dose of art and culture, the Guild Hall Museum houses a permanent collection of over 2,000 art pieces. Guild Hall promotes the work of both renowned and up-andcoming artists, particularly Long Island-based artists, who participate in the community art exhibitions held regularly.

Simply put, a regional theatre is a professional theatre (meaning actors and production crew are paid) operating outside of Manhattan. In one season alone, you might see the national tour of Broadway productions sweep through town for a month-long stay, or a brand new play or musical in its tryout before its New York debut. Additionally, regional theatres often have a strong educational component to them, offering workshops and master classes in the performing arts to emerging artists of all ages.

YOU SAY “THEATER,” I SAY “THEATRE” No need to call the whole thing off: Traditionally, a theatre is a place for live performances, while a theater is the place to watch a movie. However, as you can see on these pages, it really depends on the preference of the organization.

DINE A hybrid of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, Taboon may be the first restaurant to make room for global ingredients. The word Taboon is the Arabic word for the arched oven used to bake the flatbread, set upon an artisan cutting board that you’ll enjoy when seated. Tall windows offer an ethereal, soothing feel that is emphasized by white curtains, white bricks, and white tables. The environment is both inviting and rustic with nods to both Mediterranean cultures and Middle Eastern traditions. We personally enjoyed the baked ricotta gnocchi with its dried porcini mushroom sauce, artichokes and Parmesan, served perfectly. Don’t forget to make a reservation here this summer to enjoy an overseas meal in our very own backyard.

ADAM RODRIGUEZ By Alexandra Anastasio

A true New Yorker, actor Adam Rodriguez says the city with a pulse will always be home. “I am grateful to have had NYC as the place where I was able to create my foundation; the place I learned to see people in a way I don’t think any other place in the world would have given me. I wouldn’t love where I am now if I didn’t know and love NYC; it shaped me.” PHOTOGRAPHER: FERNANDO FORERO STYLING: MINDY GURA, PAULA ORLAN & DANA PRIGGÉ HAIR: BIANCA LYDER GROOMING: CHRIS LANSTON LOCATION: HOTEL GIRAFFE

Born in Yonkers, Rodriguez grew up in New City, NY, and split his time between home and Castle Hill in the Bronx where his extended family lived. “They had a big help in raising me,” says the “Magic Mike,” “Empire,” and former “CSI: Miami” star. With his parents working long hours, he bounced back and forth and says both felt like home. Like many young boys growing up, the actor dreamed of becoming a baseball player. “When I realized this wasn’t going to happen, I started thinking I had to do something I loved and so it became about trying to figure that out,” he says. While enrolled at a community college, Rodriguez took some acting classes (he had dabbled in it while in high school), and soon discovered his passion. “I realized this was something I loved and wanted to do with my life.”

Chasing the Dream

Once his decision was made, the pragmatic side of Rodriguez kicked in. He knew he had to support himself in a job where he could make enough money to build up his nest egg. He embraced his knack for business (he was president of the business club in high school), and set his sights on becoming a stockbroker. At 19 years old, Rodriguez joined a brokerage firm as a trainee and began studying for his tests. “I believed I could make some money doing that.” Within six months, however, he realized this wasn’t the right direction and left the business to focus solely on acting, even if it meant waiting tables to support himself. “I looked around one day at the people I worked with and I didn’t see many happy faces. I didn’t want to get caught up in that life. Before you know it, 20 years goes by and you realize you didn’t live the life you wanted to live.” Rodriguez spent the next three years chasing his dreams. He went on auditions, got an agent, worked in theatre and booked roles as an extra. Then, at the age of 22, he decided it was time to head out to Los Angeles. “That’s where things really got started,” he recalls.

A Foot in the Door

Rodriguez’s first big break came from a connection his father had with a former Army buddy who also happened to be a retired NYC detective. The two men hadn’t spoken in years, but after seeing his friend on TV at the 1996 Emmy Awards, his father reached out and the men reconnected. One thing led to another and Rodriguez was introduced to David Milch and Steven Bochco, the creators of the hit show, “NYPD Blue.” He was given the opportunity to audition for a new show they were creating, “Brooklyn South,” and recalls how the opportunity was a “huge deal” because at the time he didn’t even have a theatrical agent. “That was my first big break and I owe it to my father, Bill Clark, and David Milch.” While he won the role, the show only lasted for a year. He took some time to learn the ropes and figure things out in LA, and then began booking guest starring roles on shows like “Felicity,” “Resurrection Boulevard,” “All Souls,” and “Roswell” with Katherine Heigl. A year after “Roswell” was cancelled in 2002, Rodriguez landed the role of Detective Eric Delko on “CSI: Miami.” “I was excited to land the role because I knew it was a big show and it turned out to be amazing.” The show lasted for 10 years, an experience Rodriguez describes as “incredible!”

Showcasing His Moves

Throughout the show’s 10-year run, Rodriguez recalls some favorite moments. In both season 9 and 10 he had the opportunity to write and direct an episode and describes working with the crew whom he had formed close friendships with as amazing. “To get to work with them as a director as opposed to an actor was a nice experience.” In addition to his work on TV, he’s also appeared on the big screen in such hits as “Magic Mike,” and will reprise his role as Tito in July in “Magic Mike XXL.” Rodriguez describes Tito as a man who is “very money hungry” in the first film with big plans that he’s yet to act upon. In the sequel, audiences will see him acting on those plans to own his own business. “Tito’s the only other guy besides Mike (played by Channing Tatum) who has gone out and pursued his dream.” When it came to preparing for the film, Rodriguez admits this was no kind of dancing he’d ever done. He not only had to learn the steps, but had to “own” the dance, putting a style and flavor to really make it unique. “The two months leading up to filming were intense,” says Rodriguez. Between physical training, dance rehearsals, and strict dieting, the guys were all happy to see that part end although he says it was a sad day when the movie wrapped.

“We all clicked during the filming of the first movie,” says Rodriguez. “All the guys are cool and very down to earth. I want to work with all of these people on every single thing – that’s how much of a good time we had!” Rodriguez even cites the film and his character as his favorite to date. “In terms of putting my all into something, that character is really special to me,” says the actor. He cites the freedom the directors gave him to define and create his character. “You don’t always get that.”

The New Empire Ahead

Next up for Rodriguez is a recurring role this fall on the mega hit TV show, “Empire,” which he says he’s extremely excited about. Already a huge fan of the show, he admits to having some butterflies. “I can’t wait to jump into this world they’ve created. I love that with all the high drama they’re dealing with, they’re also tackling some really important social issues.” Thrilled to be joining such a great cast, Rodriguez’s character, Laz Delgado, is a concert promoter with the gift of gab and can be described as a dynamic guy with a lot of charisma and personality. He’ll cross paths with Cookie, played by Taraji P. Henson, and while sparks are sure to fly, it’s not the first time these two actors have worked together. They appeared on-screen in 2009 in “I Can Do Bad All by Myself,” so he says he’s excited to be reunited with Henson. “I can’t wait to be hanging out with my girl every day.” With all that the actor has going on, his biggest and most important role is being a father to his 1-year-old daughter. He says he’s happiest when his daughter is smiling at him. “Becoming a dad has changed me in ways I don’t even recognize. It’s everything I ever wanted to be.” B

DJ RUCKUS By Daniel G. Hall

When you think of a great party, the music always comes into play, especially when the DJ spinning knows how to read the crowd and the playlist is killer. That winning combination has been the driving force to the international success of one of the most sought after DJs in the world. Ruckus plays upwards of 180 shows per year, including nearly 40 between Las Vegas’ premiere nightclubs Hakkasan and Omnia, where he has been a resident since each club opened. His clientele includes a legion of loyal celebrity fans, including his cousin Lenny Kravitz, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell, Kanye West, and Shaquille O’Neal, all of whom hire Ruckus to spin at their private parties. 80 BELLANYC.COM | July/August 2015

With BELLA’s summer Hamptons party in mind, we thought DJ Ruckus was the perfect NYC Artist Spotlight for the issue. Music and talent are two things that make any event go from good to great, and with Ruckus on the playlist it will be nothing short of spectacular. You began your career in the music business at such a young age; when did you know this was what you were meant to do? When I was 17, I was deejaying a weekly Sunday party in NYC, and one night Diddy came to the booth and told me he was throwing his birthday party in Morocco and was taking me out there to deejay. I think that’s the moment I knew I’d be doing this forever. Is it everything you thought it would be? I don’t think I could have imagined what it would be. It’s taken me to so many great places and around so many great talented people. I’m fortunate to have been able to make a career out of something I love doing. The role of a DJ has evolved so much over the years. What do you bring to the role that others don’t? What makes you different? Being an open format deejay allows me to have a lot of creative freedom and play all different types of events, from my residencies at Hakkasan LV and LIV Miami where I’m playing a high-energy club set, to corporate events for clients like Alexander Wang or Louis Vuitton where the type of music I play will be totally different. I’m able to get really creative with my sets and at any time take the vibe anywhere I feel the crowd will respond; play a song you’d never expect or haven’t heard in a long time; scratch and cut; and so on. I’m able to connect to so many different types of people and crowds through music and give a different show and experience each time I play.

Out of all the celebrities for whom you’ve gotten a chance to perform, which were you most excited for? I’d have to say Oprah. I even taught her how to deejay for a few minutes. That was a pretty surreal moment! What genre of music do you relate to most? I really love all genres – hip-hop, dance, rock, reggae, rock, etc. That really translates in my sets. I’m inspired by all genres and artists. Describe yourself in one sentence. I’m a hardworking, positive, happy person who loves life! How do you balance your personal life and career? It’s definitely hard. I’m on the road so much that it’s pretty common if I’m not home for months at a time. I think, really, the two have become one. There’s not much separation at this point. But I enjoy it because I love the industry I work in, the friends I’ve made, and the lifestyle. What is your favorite part of NYC? I love the authenticity of NYC – from the music scene, to the style and fashion, to the restaurants. It has so much to offer. What advice can you offer the next generation? Work hard and hone your craft. There are a lot of talented people out there doing this now and I think it’s important to set yourself apart and really create your own style and sound. What does being an artist mean to you? Being an artist means being able to create anything – whether it’s music, art, a product, a message – and make an impact with it. I think the most important part about being an artist is connecting with and moving other people through your vision. B

Summer By Alexandra Anastasio

With summer in full swing, days feel longer, weather is warmer, and BELLA’s “Stars of Summer” are turning up the heat! From movies to TV, this talented group of actors is hard at work all year round bringing audiences their favorite shows. From intense, action-packed dramas and sci-fi, to the 20th anniversary of a 90’s iconic classic movie, there’s something here for everyone. As the seasons change, so do our shows and – lucky for us! – the networks aren’t leaving us hanging all summer long. So, while you may be bidding farewell to your favorite fall programs, have no fear – some new favorite hits are here! Meet the stars destined to heat up your summer…

ZOE MCLELLAN Zoe McLellan @Zoe_McLellan

It’s only fitting that the name Zoe means life because Zoe McLellan is passionate when she says she’s lucky to have such an amazing one! She does what she loves week after week on the hit CBS show, “NCIS: New Orleans,” and says that being a part of the wildly popular franchise that viewers have come to love over the past 10 years was her “biggest pinch-me moment” so far. To prepare for her role as Agent Meredith Brody, McLellan shadowed the man the show is based upon, took gun practice, visited naval bases, and spoke with agents about their experiences to ensure a real-life feel to her character. With the show filming in New Orleans, the actress admits she’s never felt more at home. “I’m so glad the people I meet say they are happy to have us here; it makes me feel welcome.” One of the things she loves most is portraying Brody’s personal life: “The relationship stories are my favorite.” If McLellan looks familiar it’s because she boasts an extensive on-screen resume, including roles on “JAG” (which spawned “NCIS” and its spinoffs) and the drama series, “Dirty Sexy Money.” Her greatest accomplishment to date? Becoming a mom, she says. “I feel fortunate as a working mother to be able to bring my son to the set; there’s even a playroom for him at the stage, which makes life a lot easier!”

STACEY DASH RealStaceyLDash @REALStaceyDash

For any young girl growing up in the 90’s, the iconic film “Clueless” and actress Stacey Dash are synonymous. As the popular Dionne Davenport, a rich and pretty high school student, the film was Dash’s breakout role, and this summer marks its 20 th anniversary. Loosely based on Jane Austin’s novel “Emma,” the film resonates with teens of any era. “Dealing with the ups and downs of adolescent life is what all young girls go through whether you’re rich or poor,” says Dash. With dozens of movies, such as “Moving,” “Mo Money,” and “Renaissance Man,” and numerous TV series under her belt – including a spin-off of “Clueless” – Dash admits Dionne is her favorite character. “Every single day was memorable and it was a joy to be surrounded by so much talent.” What started with a Tweet on social media back in 2012 led to a new role for Dash in 2014, as a political news contributor for Fox News. Her viewpoints have sparked debates amongst her peers and have given the actress the opportunity to use her platform to speak out on various topics. Until that first Tweet in support of then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012, Dash wasn’t interested in politics, but she believes when God wants you to go in a certain direction, “He opens doors no one can close.” Switching things up, Dash is working on a new role, one she describes as “very dark,” in a film called “Wretched,” along with a book that comes out this summer. As a working mother of two in Hollywood, Dash says there is no magic plan to make things work. “I do it by the grace of God.” In whatever role she takes on, her goal is to “defend the weak and stand up for what’s right.” Photo: Gilles Toucas

NATURI NAUGHTON Naturi4Real @NaturiNaughton

In Naturi Naughton’s own words, she’s just a “regular girl” from East Orange, NJ who has worked hard and is following her dreams.” Those dreams have led to some pretty amazing opportunities on stage and screen. A singer in the church choir since she was 5, Naughton’s career began as part of the group 3LW. Three years later she branched out to other areas but explains that her passion to sing and perform still drives her. “It’s what helped me become who I am today.” Big-break roles followed: Naughton appeared in “Hairspray” on Broadway for three years and in the film, “Notorious,” portraying real-life rapper/songwriter Lil’ Kim. It was her first time on the big screen, and she knew her life was about to change! These days Naughton can be seen in the hit summer show, “Power,” now in its second season on Starz. As the feisty, sexy, and strong Tasha St. Patrick, Naughton’s having the time of her life in what she says is her favorite role to date. The best part is the wardrobe, she says. Obsessed with the fashion of her character, it’s a girl’s dream to transform into her look. “I’m spoiled when I go to work!” Fans might be surprised to know that Naughton has a competitive streak; she’s a big game-night fanatic and admits she was a Double Dutch champion as a kid. “Give me a rope and I will show off and show out,” says Naughton. It’s that type of commitment and dedication to the things she loves that is helping the actress get closer to her goals.

DYLAN NEAL Dylan Neal @DylanNealStudio Dylan Neal

Canadian actor Dylan Neal has graced the screen for almost 30 years, achieving both success and longevity in a business that can be tough. “Any career is ‘one foot in front of the other,’” says Neal. “You have good years, you have bad years, but what you really need in this business is tenacity and courage.” Driven by creativity, Neal always knew his career should focus on that direction. In addition to acting, he is also a writer and a producer (alongside his wife, Becky Southwell), and says he feels blessed that he gets paid to do what he loves. He’s appeared in countless TV shows, such as “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch,” “Dawson’s Creek,” and “The Bold and The Beautiful,” numerous made-for-TV movies, and this past winter in the box office hit, “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Fans of Neal might be surprised to know that he’s also a woodworker. As a lover of beautiful furniture, especially 18th and 19th century British antiques, he acquired the knowledge and tools to make his own recreations – something he’s been doing now for over 20 years. “I’ve always been interested in how beautiful things are made.” This summer, the married father of two appears in the “Gourmet Detective: A Healthy Place to Die,” the second film in the new franchise series for Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. He will also be returning for the third season of “Cedar Grove,” the American/Canadian drama based on the book series of the same name by author Debbie Macomber.

Partners in life and in work, Neal and his wife have several projects in various stages of development and production. Splitting his time between Los Angeles and Vancouver where he shoots most of the year, the couple has figured out a way to work cross country together. Keeping things in perspective is key, Neal believes. “At the end of the day, your real responsibility lies with your children and family.” B

KSENIA SOLO TheRealKSolo @KseniaSolo

The first few years of actress Ksenia Solo’s life were spent sitting in the wings of a theatre trying to emulate what she saw on stage, so it’s no surprise she followed in the footsteps of her artistic family. Born in Riga, Latvian SSR, Solo moved to Toronto at a young age and landed her first real acting role at 10 years old in a popular Canadian kid’s series. Since then, she’s gone on to star in numerous television shows, such as “Lost Girls,” and on the big screen in films like “Black Swan.” It was at the Venice Film Festival for “Black Swan,” with photographers and fans all vying for her attention, that Solo realized the impact she had. “It was my first red carpet ever and all I could think of was making it to the end without falling on my face!” Currently starring in not one, but three shows – “Turn,” “Lost Girl,” and “Orphan Black” – the busy actress isn’t stopping there. She’s also co-owner of a production company, On-Fire Films, and recently demonstrated her passion for working behind the camera by directing her first music video. Apart from her work onscreen, Solo is deeply involved in causes close to her heart. Bullied as a child, she is a strong advocate and one of the directors of Stand for the Silent, an organization that raises awareness of bullying and the devastation it causes. She also supports the EndPolioNow Movement, helping spread awareness about the disease. In spite of living her life in front of the spotlight, Solo says true beauty is believing in yourself. “Appreciate what you have, and rock it no matter what. That’s what’s attractive!” Photo: Gilles Toucas

more about how I was growing up as an individual, and what was I doing to make the world a better place.” Mowry-Housley continues to view her job as just that, and it doesn’t define who she is. “I have a life outside of Hollywood,” she says. Sharing the screen with Tia until 2009, Mowry-Housley points out that growing up, the sisters were all about “Tia and Tamera.” Now working on themselves as individuals, Mowry-Housley admits they’re very different. “When you have two powerful individuals, you are only going to be greater together.” This past April, Mowry-Housley added published author to her list of achievements. With her sister, she coauthored the first book in a four part preteen series, entitled “Twintuition,” which premiered in bookstores to rave reviews. Described as an “easy, adventurous read,” the book centers on 12-year-old twins who realize they have a special power of premonition. Inspired by the girls’ own crazy intuition and experiences, the actress is very proud and says she is “extremely excited about it.” Mowry-Housley can also be seen weekdays on the popular talk show, “The Real,” alongside her four co-hosts who she says are “a lot of fun.” Teaching women to not be so competitive, but instead to learn from each other’s differences and embrace them, she sees the show as refreshing, one she says she’d watch even if she weren’t involved. “We keep it 100 percent … they chose five women who can’t be fake and cannot hold anything back,” says Mowry-Housley.

Best known for her role on “Sister Sister,” actress Tamera Mowry-Housley, along with her identical twin sister Tia, were a staple in homes across the country during the 90s on what is fondly remembered as ABC’s “TGIF.” In spite of growing up in the spotlight, Mowry-Housley, now a mother of a young son with another on the way, credits her parents for keeping her grounded. “They instilled in me the fact that my job did not define who I was, my character did,” she says. “They cared

When she’s not sharing advice on the show, fans of the actress can head to her blog where Mowry-Housley, a sharer by nature, keeps her fans “in the know,” as she puts it. “If I learn something that is helpful, I like to share it.” Whether it’s fashion, cooking, interior design, or tips on motherhood, there’s something for everyone. Passionate about life, Mowry-Housley knows there’s more to it than just being on-screen. Above all is her family, she says, and being a mom has transformed her into a completely different person. “I’ve learned the true meaning of unconditional love,” she says, “and I am seeing the world in the present through my child’s eyes.” B

Life isn’t all diamonds and rosé, but it should be.” FOR BUSINESSWOMAN AND TV PERSONALITY LISA VANDERPUMP, THESE WORDS RING TRUE – IN FACT, THEY’RE HER TAGLINE AND THE MANTRA BY WHICH SHE LIVES. FROM THE RESTAURANTS SHE OWNS, TO THE MANY BRANDS THAT BARE HER NAME, VANDERPUMP BRINGS A STYLE AND ELEGANCE THAT IS IMPECCABLE. “I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT EVERYTHING,” SAYS THE ENGLISH BEAUTY. While their roots are planted in Beverly Hills, Vanderpump and her husband Ken were living an extraordinary life before deciding to call the west coast home. Together with their two children, Pandora and Max, the family has lived all over Europe. They even lived in Los Angeles for a short period of time (it’s where they adopted Max) before the 1994 earthquake. Vanderpump attributes the experience as the reason she headed back to England. “It scared the life out of me; I’ve never been so terrified,” she says. “I could not believe what we had just experienced.”

With business still in England, the family settled back into life on an old romantic manor house situated on 100 acres of beautiful land, surrounded by animals and nature. Adventurous by nature, the family also spent time in France, London, Monte Carlo, and Monaco.

“We are impulsive,” explains Vanderpump. “Ken and I have this relationship where we can do anything or go anywhere together. But I’m more of a ‘gypsy’ than he is.” Even after 33 years of marriage, the couple shares the sentiment that life is about experiencing new things and continuing to

challenge themselves. Vanderpump recalls her mother in-law asking when they were going to settle down and have children. “I told her I don’t want to stop playing, I just found someone to play with, and together this is how we looked at life” Vanderpump recalls. “I don’t want to look back on my life and see that we stayed in the same house, did the same things. I wanted every couple of years to be a new chapter in our lives.” In addition to owning many successful restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, including the well-known Shadow Lounge in London, fans of Vanderpump might be surprised to know that while living in France, she taught at the kids’ school three days a week. “I absolutely loved motherhood, playing with the children, and being as naughty as them. I loved every moment.”

It wasn’t until their daughter Pandora was preparing for college that Vanderpump and her husband began considering their next adventure. “We understood as the children became older that there were windows of opportunity where we could get up and move, but when kids go off to college and make lifelong friends, roots are firmly planted,” she says.

When Pandora was accepted to Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, the family followed, settling into a home in Beverly Park. As protective parents, they didn’t want to be any further than 30 minutes away from her, so they decided to give the sunny climate a try once more. Upon their return to the states, the couple began considering businesses in which to invest, particularly one they knew something about. A lunchtime visit to a little restaurant named SUR started it all. After a meal and a handshake, they found themselves a partnership and Vanderpump immediately got to work designing the elaborate and beautiful restaurant that today serves as the backdrop for one of her hit TV shows, “Vanderpump Rules.” From there the couple opened the everpopular Villa Blanca Restaurant, and in 2014 they embarked on a third establishment, PUMP, located on what Vanderpump describes as the “most pivotal corner in West Hollywood.”

When it comes to designing, Vanderpump and her husband discuss everything. She draws inspiration for the design by considering a multitude of factors, such as the area’s needs and the surrounding competition. As a fan of ambiance-driven restaurants, Vanderpump admits she’s not interested in a restaurant with good food but a horrible atmosphere.

“I’d rather stay home and cook,” she says. “I want to feel that ambiance, see those flowers, feel that music, and eat in a comfortable setting.” Needing all those boxes checked off to enjoy her dining experience, this restaurateur makes certain all of her establishments meet the same standards. With PUMP, the challenge was a bit more intense, since the space was initially barren. Vanderpump recalls being there every day and thinking, “How can I make this work?” Her vision was to create something unique to the area, and while the planning was “a nightmare,” she was determined to make it visually the most beautiful restaurant in West Hollywood.

It wasn’t until about five years after returning to the states that Vanderpump was approached for “Real Housewives.” Initially reticent, she

In addition to owning the hottest restaurants in California and being recognized for the wildly popular Bravo hit shows in which she stars, “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and “Vanderpump Rules,” this isn’t Vanderpump’s first foray into television. A drama student by the age of 9, she starred in numerous TV shows and films when she was just a child. She then continued acting in small roles in shows such as “Silk Stalkings” and “Baywatch Nights,” as well as a few music videos.

had never watched nor had any idea what the shows were about. Already prominent at the time in Beverly Hills, she agreed to go in for an interview but made it clear they wouldn’t be hearing any conflict in her home. “The kids never even heard us fight.” Still, Bravo extended an offer. Unsure at first, Vanderpump knew she had nothing to hide. “I’ve never said take anything out; if I screwed up, then I should learn from it.” Her feelings of uncertainty have all since disappeared, she says, and she’s had great fun being a part of the show. That’s not to say there haven’t been stressful times, such as in season four when all the women turned on Vanderpump. “I was devastated and had never experienced anything like that,” she says. Feeling low for a few months, she credits her close relationship with both Andy Cohen and Alex Baskin at Evolution Media for helping her navigate through the craziness of those tough times and stand her ground. “While I wanted to walk away, they persuaded me to stay, and I’m glad I did,” says Vanderpump. “If I had left because a few people tried to make my life miserable, then I would have never come full circle and brought it back to the enjoyment we had in season 5.” Vanderpump knows that by being a part of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” she has a responsibility to make a good show and open up her life. “What the audience is

HER NANNY’S KINDNESS LIVES ON Many of Vanderpump’s beliefs around charity were instilled by her beloved Nanny K. She keeps photos and mementos of her grandmother close by, as it inspires her to live a kindness-filled life. “I loved her, worshipped her, adored her,” she says. “She was an eloquent, articulate woman who lived her life with style and grace. She passed away when she was 100 years old and I squeezed every last minute of good and happy times with her.”

depending on is your honesty; your reality is what they want to see. Reality is more interesting than any fiction you’ll ever be able to write … you’re dealing with real people’s emotions.” It was in January of 2013 that Vanderpump debuted another reality show on Bravo, “Vanderpump Rules” (she also serves as producer), which focuses on her restaurant and the employees at SUR. Now filming their fourth season, Vanderpump admits that on day one tensions were high and describes the kids as “a bit unpredictable” and “a little naughty.”

Behind the scenes, this successful, multitalented businesswoman isn’t slowing down. Within the past year Vanderpump started her own line of sangria, LVP Sangria, alongside her daughter and son-in-law Jason. “It was their idea,” she says. “They wanted to bring the best sangria to the market.” While the couple handles the marketing and business end, Vanderpump oversees the aesthetics and the recipe, a staple cocktail that’s been served in her restaurants for years. They currently feature a traditional red sangria, as well as a pink sangria – her signature color – and are working on a white. “They’ve done a brilliant job and are working really hard. It’s all about taking risks and that’s what they’ve done.”

Vanderpump’s love for designing, especially things she enjoys, has led to some wonderful new business ventures. She recently launched Vanderpump Pets, a line of pet accessories, such as the blingy collars her beloved Giggy sports. A portion of all proceeds benefits the American Humane Society. At the end of last year, Vanderpump debuted a home collection of table and barware, bringing the “bling and glamour” she loves to the table at affordable prices. She also launched Vanderpump Estate Jewelry Collection on EVINE Live earlier this year. The exclusive pieces are elegant and glamorous, all representative of the chic taste Vanderpump exudes. “I’m having fun with it,” she says. “If I could sit down and design everything, I would.”

Supportive of the many charities close to her heart, Vanderpump is an advocate for not only animal charities, but for those that support the LGBT community and equal rights. She has also served as a spokesperson for GLAD. Her belief in the fact that people should be judged on their character, not the color of their skin or sexual preference is an important life lesson she’s instilled in her children. “I am an ambassador for change and I want my kids to follow suit in terms of their beliefs in being kind and tolerant.” In a town where beauty is everywhere, Vanderpump says it’s not so much what’s visible on the outside but the sparkle in someone’s eyes, the passion for life, and the classic elegance. “It’s not about perfection, it’s confidence and polish, [someone] always ready to see the funny side. I find funny people attractive,” she says. When asked about her greatest accomplishments – without hesitation – Vanderpump answers, “my two children and my marriage.” And while there are many things that are important to her, family is everything. “I am happiest when I am lying next to my husband, surrounded by pink roses and as many dogs as possible!” B

In a business where success is seldomly achieved overnight, Argentinian-born actor Juan Pablo di Pace has been working hard and making a name for himself for quite some time. Three years after moving to the United States, he took on the role of a lifetime with his portrayal of Jesus Christ in NBC’s “A.D. The Bible Continues.” PHOTOGRAPHER: FERNANDO FORERO STYLING: MINDY GURA & PAULA ORLAN, THE STYLE DUO HAIR: DION MOORE of ANGELO DAVID SALON GROOMING: CHRIS LANSTON LOCATION: THE STRAND HOTEL NYC

di Pace’s love for acting wasn’t something he felt growing up; as a child he says he was, “obsessed with painting and drawing.” In fact, his lifetime goal was to become a painter. “All through school I thought that would be my path.” It wasn’t until he was cast in the school musical of “Grease” in the role of Danny Zuko that everything changed. “That first night on stage was magical, he says. Everything else went silent; it was electric.” After finishing up school at the United World College of the Adriatic in Duino, Trieste, Italy di Pace had a decision to make. With a newfound love for acting and a desire to change paths, he knew if he was going to do this he needed to train in either New York or London. As a European citizen, he decided to study in London and for the next three years immersed himself in acting, dancing, and singing. While he would remain there for 10 years, di Pace made his first professional debut in the London musical, “Chicago” as the understudy for the character of Billy Flynn. Landing the role right out of school was incredible, he recalls, and it gave him the push he needed to move away from dance and on to acting. After an eight-month run, he left the production, hired an agent, and continued to study his craft. Next up was his first on-screen role in the film, “Survival Island,” alongside actor Billy Zane. “It was an incredible experience and it taught me so much about film in general,” says di Pace. Although it wasn’t a huge box office success, the takeaway for the actor was the opportunity to learn and do something new, and to focus on his goals.

Finding Success

While di Pace worked steadily and found success, something felt like it was missing, he says. Soon after, he received an email regarding the role of Tony Manero in the Spanish production of “Saturday Night Fever.” While his goal was to make films, the actor couldn’t say no to the amazing opportunity; plus it was the first time he would be leading a show.

JuanPabloDiPace @JuanPabloDiPace Juan Pablo DiPace

di Pace spent a year and a half with the production; the first six months in Madrid and the remaining time touring the country. “I learned so much; it taught me the energy of the theatre and how you must have your game up every single day because people are paying to see an amazing show. If your energy is down the whole show goes to pot. I realize, with time, [that] the more pressure I have, the better I work,” says di Pace.

There is no such thing as can’t in this business – the only certainty in life is death and anything else is possible.” He recalls Madrid as a place that offered him the opposite of what London had given him. “London gave me the struggle while Spain opened their arms to me.” For the first time di Pace had money, was living comfortably, and was being celebrated for his talent. To be an outsider for 10 years in a country like the UK, I felt like I never really belonged, like a foreigner, and that can hurt when you put in all your time and energy into something,” remembers di Pace.

From Europe to “Dallas”

It’s always tough to start from zero in any country but di Pace’s done it more than once; this time it was a move to the US. It was now or never, he told himself, so he took another leap of faith, leaving everything he had accomplished in Spain to move to Los Angeles in October of 2013. Within days of his arrival he was cast in the role of Nicholas Trevino in the third season of “Dallas.” “To get that role was mind-blowing,” says di Pace. For six months the cast became his family, leaving the actor feeling humbled and overwhelmed. It was an answer to all of his hard work, he says. “A lot of interviews imply I’m just lucky, and things kind of just happened for me, and it really isn’t that way, it’s just the opposite.”

The Role of a Lifetime

After moving on from “Dallas” [the show was cancelled after three seasons], di Pace would take on the role of a lifetime, starring as Jesus Christ in “A.D. The Bible Continues.” Never in

a million years did he think he’d be ready or worthy enough to take on such a role, he says. “As an actor I hoped to one day be involved in a biblical project, yet playing Jesus Christ never entered my mind. After reading the script I knew it was something I had to do.” Once he landed the role it was time to start thinking of how to portray Jesus Christ in a unique, personable way while also portraying his mixture of vulnerability, nobility, and strength. “No one really knows how He was and so it became about choosing one point of view and sticking to it, says di Pace. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to please everyone because people have their own opinions, but I wanted to be truthful.” One of the most difficult scenes to film was the crucifixion, he recalls. “My heart was broken for Him and I was moved to see what He went through,” says the actor. “He didn’t complain and willingly died for others; that was tough.” His mother, religious painter Marta Maineri, was overjoyed to see her son portray Jesus, but the experience of watching him shoot those scenes was difficult. “This time she wasn’t able to separate art from reality,” says di Pace. She no longer saw her son up on the cross, she saw Him; it was Jesus dying, not Juan Pablo. It is a role di Pace is most proud of, one in which he knows he did everything in his power to bring his character to life on-screen. For most actors, new roles entail immersing themselves in their character but since di Pace’s experience was different, he relied on other methods. In an effort to find solitude, he went to the desert and slept in the dunes of Morocco [where the mini-series was shot]. He also experienced withdrawal symptoms once shooting wrapped. “Playing the resurrected Jesus gave me so much, and once I stepped outside of the role and stopped playing Him, it felt strange,” recalls the actor.

Looking Ahead

Up next for di Pace is a much lighter role in the film, “After the Reality,” starring Matthew Morrison, which will hit theatres later this year. He’s also completed his first longfeature script about his experience in London, which he plans to direct, and says he’d love to do another movie musical [he appeared alongside Meryl Streep in “Mamma Mia”]. And, of course, he’d love to hit the Broadway stage. “It’s definitely on my bucket list!” Once told, “There is no such thing as can’t in this business – the only certainty in life is death and anything else is possible,” di Pace’s taken those words to heart as he strives to bring beauty and a truthfulness to all he does. Your work has a sense of elegance and timeless appeal. What do you think helps achieve this in your design? I try not to subscribe to short-lived fads or trends. My clients are self-made people who know the value of a dollar. They want longevity in their design. Can you tell us three key elements that make up a well-designed room? One: You need a focal point. Whether it’s a fireplace, a window, or a kitchen island, I try to design around that element. Two: Scale is paramount. You can completely throw off a room with over- or undersized pieces of furniture. The right-sized coffee table, accent table, and/or sofa is essential in a balanced room. And three: The right amount of color in upholstery, drapery, rugs, pillow, or accessories will bring a room to life. How do you decide the paint color for a room? Ultimately, the clients have to live in the space, so I consult with them first to find what colors they respond to. I always design and paint with a neutral palette. If my client is drawn to red, I won’t necessarily paint a wall with that color but I’ll find a way to bring it into the room using art, flowers, or accent pillows. In your opinion, what do you think is the one must-have item that completes a space? Plants, flowers, or a potted tree – it brings life. What is the most commonly asked question you get asked? It’s “What color should I paint my living room?” Ninety percent of my clients at the moment want greys on their walls. What advice would you give someone about decluttering their home? I remove everything from the room and slowly edit as I bring things back. I find that I don’t need as many pieces of furniture and accessories. What’s your definition of beauty within a space? When scale, color, texture, and color blend seamlessly together. Tell us what your dream home looks like. It changes day to day but at the moment, I would love to build a very modern, sleek, minimal one-story-view home with 14-foot ceilings, concrete floors, and walls of glass that overlook an infinity pool. Our experience began with market fresh beet salad and the colorful tomato salad, with flavor evident of summer’s arrival. We ordered the strip steak since that is the Polo’s signature entrée. The peppercorn crust enhanced the flavor without overpowering the richness of the meat. It absolutely lived up to our expectations. We took our waiter’s suggestion and ordered a bottle of the Silverado Vineyards Cabernet, which was the perfect accompaniment. Dessert doesn’t get better than the decadent, colossal, seven-layer chocolate cake with hot fudge. It’s a must for all chocolate lovers! MIND+BODY Success Comes From Struggle

Horton learned this truth firsthand as a kid struggling in academics and athletics and then as a young adult trying to make ends meet after moving to California from New England. He ultimately experienced a physical and spiritual awakening through these early challenges. “Anybody who manages to succeed often has to go through conflict and adversity,” he says. Keep that in mind when tackling a plan to get into shape!

Count to Four

According to Horton, whose P90X empire spans DVDs, books, equipment, supplements, performance bars, and most recently, a gig with DietBet, an online challenge designed to help people lose weight with prize and cash incentives, four basic components must be in place for a plan to be successful: #1 Purpose: The reason to achieve your goal must be aligned with you wanting to become more active and flexible, Horton says, not based solely on a desired appearance or weight. “If it’s about cosmetics and ego you are going to fail because these are just traps.” #2 Consistency: Your workout and wellness plan needs to be a daily part of your life, something to which you give 100 percent – no matter what. Simply put, says Horton: “Not showing up always gives you nothing.” #3 A Plan: Set aside 15 minutes at the beginning of each month to plan and then write down your day-by-day workout plan for the month. And then, follow it! #4 Accountability: Horton suggests you plan your workouts with a partner or a group. Such “peer pressure” will increase the likelihood that you’ll follow through and stick with it.

Hop Away from the Elliptical

You need to ditch the familiar to see results. That means, if you’re an elliptical junkie, it’s time to hop off. “Variety is the spice of fitness,” says Horton, encouraging you to bust out of the rut he calls “the build and burn model.”

ADVICE ON HOW TO UP YOUR WELLNESS GAME FOR LIFE Tony Horton is at the top of the fitness world for a reason: aside from his Herculean physique and dynamic personality, his revolutionary P90X® total body workouts have transformed millions of lives. And, lucky for us, he shared some exclusive tips on how to create a wellness program to live your best life. By Sari Beth Rosenberg

Women tend to focus on burning calories and men want to just build muscle. Horton puts it this way: “There is no learning curve on the elliptical.” Change comes through fear and pushing yourself with challenging skillsbased exercises that target every body part, he adds.

Food First, Fitness Second

Even if you follow a strong daily workout routine, Horton stresses that without the proper diet, don’t be surprised if you get nowhere. “Food happens three to four times a day, which is essentially 80 to 90 percent of your day.” That’s why healthy eating habits are integral to any fitness plan. Whether you decide to start Tony Horton’s P90X program or just follow his amazing advice, here’s to a summer of taking your wellness and fitness program up a notch!

CONSIDERING FREEZING YOUR EGGS? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW By Dr. Katherine Melzer-Ross, GENESIS Fertility and Reproductive Medicine

Women today encounter myriad life opportunities and choices, some which allow for parenthood at an early age and others that do not. While many of us have dreamed of becoming mothers, life circumstances often make finding the right time for parenthood a challenge.

130 BELLANYC.COM | July/August 2015

Unlike our parents’ generation, nearly one out of five women now wait until after age 35 to have a child, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a physician, I can certainly relate to this since academics and job training were often the focal points of my life. This is true for many women who continue to make personal sacrifices in order to advance their careers and life goals. For them, as for me, the question has never been, “Should I have a child?” but rather, “When is the right time to have a child?” Other women have had to postpone childbearing due to medical conditions, such as cancer or lupus, only to discover after treatment that their chances for parenthood are greatly decreased due to the medications they have received. Egg freezing is a technology that can extend a woman’s fertility potential, enabling her to conceive at a later time in her life, depending on her social or medical circumstances. In naturally occurring pregnancies the female egg is fertilized by sperm from the male and the resulting embryo grows into a baby. Egg freezing (referred to medically as “oocyte cryopreservation”) is a process performed on eggs prior to fertilization. This technology was initially developed in European countries for patients with religious concerns regarding the creation of too many fertilized embryos. Its

use has since been extended as a way of preserving fertility and reproductive autonomy for women who do not yet have a partner as well as for those who are undergoing medical treatments that would risk their fertility. The process involves the extraction of eggs from the ovaries following hormonal stimulation (similar to the in vitro fertilization process), freezing them and storing for later use. While there is no guarantee that future pregnancy will result, egg freezing serves as a way of increasing the possibility of having children in the future. The first child born from a frozen egg occurred over 25 years ago, but the technology has vastly improved in the past five years; success rates approach those of in-vitro fertilization. Egg freezing involves the “flash freezing” (referred to as vitrification) of eggs. The eggs can be thawed at a later date and fertilized to create an embryo for subsequent implantation and birth. There is limited information on how long eggs can remain viable once frozen. However, with the data that is available, we understand that the eggs are usable for at least four years, if not indefinitely. Undergoing this procedure does not increase the risk of genetic or birth defects. Because every woman is born with a finite number of eggs, her fertility potential is best when she is in her twenties and starts to decline in the mid-thirties. With this in mind, the best time to consider egg freezing is by the mid-thirties. This is also because the risk for miscarriage rises after the mid-thirties due to genetic changes that happen in the eggs with aging. Unfortunately, the biological clock keeps ticking even for women living very healthy

Unfortunately, the biological clock keeps ticking even for women living very healthy lifestyles.” lifestyles. For women who are considering egg freezing, we recommend a consultation sooner rather than later. While women have conceived from eggs frozen at later ages (early forties), the chances of pregnancy are lower. On the flip side, we generally do not recommend elective egg freezing for women who are still in their twenties. This is because egg freezing is a considerable financial investment, and many women who freeze eggs at this age will not need to use them. Patients with a cancer diagnosis that threatens their fertility are strongly advised to consider egg freezing if medically possible, regardless of how young they may be. If you are reading this article and think that egg freezing might be for you, I encourage you to speak with your OB/GYN or to see a fertility specialist that offers patients this opportunity. To be a woman today is to encounter a world of opportunities; your chance at parenthood need not be sacrificed in order to experience them.

Trying to have a baby? We can help! Our mission is to help patients realize the dream of parenthood. GENESIS is a nationally recognized center of excellence for the treatment of infertility. In 2005, Sudara founder Shannon Keith took a trip to India that opened her eyes to a tragedy occurring daily to women and girls: modern day slavery. Keith listened to story after story of girls being sold into the sex trade by their families, picked up off the street, and even young mothers just trying to feed their children. Keith returned home determined to do something about it. In 2006, Sudara hired the first six employees for their first sewing center and began teaching each woman how to become a seamstress. The first pair of PUNJAMMIES™ loungewear was produced. Stitch by stitch, the women gained confidence not only in their newfound trade, but also in their newfound freedom.

THE VACATION SITUATION You date ‘em, you dig ‘em, but can you travel together? Without question, spending an entire week away is the single, greatest test any relationship could ever endure. With nowhere to hide, you and yours are trapped together – strangers in a strange land – with nothing to hold onto but each other. Now, intimacy like that can be wonderfully romantic … or (sadly) horrifyingly instructive. Can you guess what I’m going to highlight for you today? By Jarrod Thalheimer

The Freebie Junkie

It started in the hotel room. Before you could even unpack, “Freddy the Freeloader” had scooped enough mini soap, shampoo, and sewing kits to outfit the gift bags at a Munchkins Convention. Regardless of relevancy (or a genuine need of any kind), this sort of baseline attraction to “free” can be a disease without a cure. So even as you marvel at the sheer number of disposable rain ponchos he was able to stuff down his pants at Niagara Falls, or how happy he seems filling yet another pocket-Ziplock with “complimentary” mints from the waitress station, consider: Is a looter of this quality someone you would ever want to leave alone in your mother’s bathroom? I think not…

The Over-Planner

Back home he might seem a little stiff or a tad OCD, but visits to far-off locales knock loose whatever safeties he normally employs. Before you’ve even stepped off the bus from the airport he’s arranged four walking tours, two museum retrospectives, and a group dinner with a team of Hungarian glass blowers. Spontaneity, be damned, as absolutely nothing is left to chance for the rest of the trip. In no time flat your vacation stops being an escape and looks more like the official duties of some hyper-scheduled royal family. Call in sick quick, before it’s too late.

The Plight Of The Navigator

Having a poor sense of direction is one thing but an inability to process even the simplest directional advice is a warning sign to bigger issues. Maps have existed for thousands of years, allowing countless civilizations to survive, thrive, and expand across the world. Today, we live in an age where they can talk back and even lead us around by name. For your partner in life to still be a confused moron when it comes to handling the simplest of locationbased tasks abroad is unacceptable. This idiot may have to get you to a hospital someday and if he can’t even find the Starbucks in the airport without creating an international incident, you need to grab your own map and get!

The Picky Eater

No one is demanding she dig into plates of deep-fried worms or get excited over bowls of chocolate-covered locusts but carrying on like a baby because you can’t find a KFC or Burger King suggests that a rather long future of mono-chromatic food options await you both. If every menu presented is weighed first by its similarity to US-style chain dining, your significant eater is sending some lifetime signals it would be best you not ignore. Send it – and her – back immediately!

The Fashionasty

Caged in by the harsh realities of the average suitcase, these seemingly normal individuals somehow lose touch with reality and begin dressing like color-blind prison escapees who’ve come upon an untended clothesline. Suddenly, they think nothing of stepping out in rainbow socks and sportsandals or pairing a flower-printed (and oddly revealing) tank top with fern-green dress pants. Even a shirt and tie with shorts is somehow considered on-the-money for a fancy dinner out. How the confines of a carry-on led to this embarrassment of epic proportions can never fully be explained, but your response should be to put on dark glasses, and run!

The Constant Complainer

Finding themselves trapped deep inside a weeklong exercise in unfamiliarity, this creature of habit lashes out at each and every single thing that challenges their normal (and soothingly routine) way of life. Note their constant repetition of “We sure don’t do things that way back home” as proof-positive your vacation train is headed straight off the tracks. No worries though. Maybe traveling isn’t your bag either. After all, somebody has to stay home and pick up all those other folks from the airport. B

DISH UP SOME DELECTABLE READING THIS SUMMER Reading a good book can be a vacation of its own – although reading by the pool or the seashore can only heighten the escape. Go ahead and indulge: Pair your reading with a light snack and some wine, or just savor the meals and beverages on the pages of some of these books. Either way, you’ll have created a recipe for delicious reading this summer. By Barbara Bellesi

Robin Givhan (Flatiron Books) The titular “battle” was a fashion show that took place on a November night in 1973 and was originally intended to be a fundraiser for the restoration of the opulent palace of Louis XIV. Instead, some fashion fierceness took place between France’s Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, and Marc Bohan of Christian Dior and America’s Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein, Halston, and Stephen Burrows. Many assumed France would dominate, but it was America’s daring and fashion foresight (10 of the American models were black) that got tongues wagging then and now, more than 40 years later. Forget “The Devil Wears Prada” – this is a real story about some of fashion’s biggest egos going head to head on the runway.

Laura Dave (Simon & Schuster) When Georgia Ford’s impending wedding is on the brink of disaster, she returns home to her family and their Sonoma vineyard that had always meant simpler and happier times to her. But just as Georgia’s fiancé had earth-shattering secrets, so does Georgia’s family – secrets that threaten to take away the vineyard and destroy her family. So much for the simplicity to which she was hoping to escape. Dave’s novel, whose title is a nod to how many grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine, is a story about love, family, and home – for better or for worse.

J. Ryan Stradal (Viking) Lars Thorvald is now a single dad to baby Eva, thanks to his wine-loving wife who ran off with a sommelier. Lars is committed to raising his daughter as a foodie, and as Eva grows up in Minnesota, she is surrounded by delicious foods with a Scandinavian flair. Eva takes her dad’s lead and, as an adult, becomes the hot chef behind a secret supper club. The high point of the story is a meal that is pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate and carries with it an emotional punch that is stronger than any spice on the rack. Stradal’s debut novel, which combines foodie culture with a Midwest accent, is a feast for readers.

“THE GRAND CHATEAUX OF BORDEAUX” Edited by Ralf Frenzel (teNeues) Short of an actual trip to France, this gorgeous coffee table book is a picturesque tour of the world’s most renowned wine region. The book highlights the French chateaux and vineyards where some of the most luscious wines you’ll ever imbibe are created. The book features 250 photos of the vineyards and estates where the winemaking magic is conjured by the skilled vintners and cellar masters. Accompanying text explains the history and architecture of the chateaux and estates, along with details about the grapes and soil – two of the natural ingredients that make French wine such a delight.

Mitzi Libsohn (Page Publishing) Upon her passing in 2008, Libsohn left a substantial collection of poetry written over four decades. It was her dream to see some of it published in book form, but that dream was not fulfilled during her lifetime. Her grieving daughter, Pauli, took it upon herself to fulfill that dream anyway, and so she began the editing process of her mother’s poems. The result is this beautiful book full of poems that, in the words of the author, are more like paintings than poems in their vividness. Pauli feels that this is the way her mother would most like to have seen her poems published, and readers will be pleased as well.

Anita Hughes (St. Martin’s) Actress Amelia Tate thinks she’s hit the big time when she’s cast as Audrey Hepburn’s character in the remake of “Roman Holiday.” However, her relationship with her boyfriend doesn’t have the romantic Hollywood ending that she was hoping for. While filming on location in Rome, Amelia befriends a young woman named Sophie, a princess who is laying low in order to reflect on her own life and choices. Amelia then falls for Philip, a striking journalist who happens to believe that Amelia is the hotel maid. As Amelia struggles to find out who she is as both a woman and an actress, the Eternal City’s charm becomes a character in its own right in this fifth novel by Hughes.

It’s no secret that novelist Anita Hughes has a penchant for Italy. “I absolutely love the food, the fashion, and the history,” she says. “Lake Como” was published in 2013 and now her newest novel, “Rome in Love,” takes us back to the country that is home to the Eternal City. It’s also no secret that Hughes is a fan of Audrey Hepburn – “Oh gosh, am I ever!” she says – and the screen siren’s legacy is writ large in the novel. Amelia, the main character, is an actress who is cast in Hepburn’s role in a remake of “Roman Holiday,” one of Hughes’ favorite films that she watches every Christmas. “There is something about [Hepburn] that is so sophisticated and yet very optimistic and almost childlike,” she says. “She’s absolutely unique.” A prolific writer, Hughes has finished her sixth novel, set in Majorca, which will be released next spring.

THE HAMPTONS By Gwen Wunderlich-Smith

Heading to the Hamptons this summer? So are we! From the best places to wine and dine with family and friends, newest places to unwind, surf and stay, and events where tiki torches, celebrities, and shopping reigns – it’s all there in the famed East End. BELLA NYC explored the Hampton’s newest places and these are the ones we know will ensure summertime smiles and life long memories. Enjoy, and we’ll see you at the beach.

If you know anything about the Hamptons, you know it’s a place where the elite relax, play, and spend their money. This year on July 18, all will gather for the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation’s Art for Life Gala. The mission is dedicated to providing inner city youth across New York City with significant exposure to the arts, as well as to supporting emerging artists with exhibition opportunities. We hope to see you there to show your support of the arts.

Through the bamboo trellis just off the lobby of Sole East, enter The Backyard Restaurant. In that brief moment, the world seems to fade away. With a pool to one side and fire pit to the other, the Backyard is perfectly situated for a leisurely dinner, cocktails under the stars, and conversations that last until closing. The layout mimics the nature of Executive Chef Larry Kolar, which is a combination of cool reserve and serious passion (for cooking).

New to Southampton this summer, L’OBJET is offering designs for the home that are both luxurious and functional. L’OBJET has been responsible for some of tabletops most innovative and exceptional designs. The concept of melding precious metals, layered patterns, and sophisticated styling are synonymous with the company’s name. The home décor collections are as distinctive as they are functional, including hollowware, candles, frames, and accessories. Check it out and pick up some new dinnerware for a summer dinner party.

Summer in the Hamptons is nothing without the beach and there’s no better way to get the full experience than a moonlight paddle at Georgica Beach with our friends at Main Beach Surf. The outing starts with a bonfire overlooking the sunset on a beach adorned with tiki lamps, wine and cheese, and local snacks. The crew then prepares the crafts to set out for a memorable paddle under the moonlight and stars. This is one of our surefire summer faves.

Old and new architecture come together in the Hampton’s Topping Rose. Staying in the Topping Rose is like dwelling at a gallery, with its tasteful setting and contemporary palates. The 22-room luxury inn is a bicycle ride from beaches and wineries. The Main House rooms suggest the home’s 1840s style in the iron beds and historicallyinspired bedside tables, but are offset by modern touches, like a coffee table of white lacquer cubes.

Red Bar is undeniably the ideal locale for both Southampton locals and those who hunt for the finest dining experiences. The food mastered by Chef Erik Nodeland is a balance between French influence and local bounty. Red Bar knows what dinner should feel like: its comfort, its intimacy, its consideration, and its spirit. Whatever occasion brings you here, you’ve arrived, and it should feel good!

Escape to Solé East Resort, a hotel housed in a landmark American Tudor building with bungalow-like rooms, each one unique, and cabana suites. A heated pool with oversized St. Tropez-style beds will keep you cool while your head bops to tunes being spun by the poolside DJ. Lush lawns and gardens with bamboo walkways complete the beach club feel. Just a five-minute walk from Montauk Village and the beach, great vibes and atmosphere abound. Come shop for a good cause. The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation is bringing Super Saturday to the Hamptons on July 25, 2015. Super Saturday is a daylong shopping event that brings top luxury name brands in high fashion, accessories, beauty, children’s items, and home goods at 30 to 50 percent off retail to lovers of fashion, charity, and amazing steals and deals. All of the proceeds from sales of merchandise, tickets, and tables go toward funding OCRF’s programs, so unleash your inner shopaholic with good conscience. B

We could all take a cue from famed rock legends who escape to Montauk for a casual, island beach lifestyle free from disruptions. Historic sentiments like the replica of the iconic Montauk lighthouse will surely draw you in like Jay Gatsby himself, thanks to the property’s aura of classic elegance and modern finesse. The historic maritime culture of Montauk is celebrated throughout the nautical theme of all 103 suites and villas, as well as its 232-slip mega-yacht marina. The seaside village of Montauk is practically the fruition of a dream, so it’s no surprise it has been a perennial playground for the rich and famous for nearly eight decades. Montauk Yacht Club was built in 1928 by entrepreneur Carl Fisher, the legend who turned Miami from a sleepy backwater town into a thriving resort city. Fisher had dreams of replicating his success with the small seaside village designed to be a playground for the rich and famous, with the Montauk Yacht Club as its crowning glory. The club’s original membership included Vincent Astor, J.P. Morgan, Edsel Ford, Harry Payne Whitney, Thomas Eastman, John Wanamaker, and Harold S. Vanderbilt. Among the many early guests were famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, who often flew his seaplane into the harbor to dock at the resort’s marina. The historic architectural style meets the casual elegance of the Hamptons through modern, luxurious touches. The outdoor patio is a barefoot chic haven that will have your feet dancing alongside fire pits and making way to the resort’s speakeasy-style bar for handcrafted cocktails. The beautiful deck off of the Vanderbilt Room overlooking Lake Montauk, creates an ideal setting for a private dinner. The fine dining destination Gulf Coast Kitchen boasts renovations and new menus while Hurricane Alley provides the perfect casual ambiance. Guests never have to leave the historic resort grounds. Soak up the sun by one of two glistening outdoor pools, get a taste of adventure with a surf or sailing lesson, or indulge in a full day of pampering at Spa MYC. From volleyball, tennis, stand-up paddle lessons, paddle tours, surf lessons, and Flotilla Boat Parties designed for large groups to fishing charters and complimentary bicycles, there’s something for everyone. The Montauk Yacht Club provides the grace, refinement, and elegance of yesteryear, preserved and updated for your enjoyment today and beyond. B

New York City “mompreneur” Lyss Stern founded Divalysscious Moms to bridge the gap between a glam, pre-baby lifestyle and a postbaby life. At Divalysscious Moms’ events, they get together to experience sensational events, meet new friends, or catch up with old ones – all with no stress! Favorite restaurant? Peter Lugers Steakhouse 3. Favorite neighborhood? I just love absolutely everything about the West Village. It’s a charming neighborhood that reminds me of a quaint European town.  4. The best part of my job is… Knowing that I am empowering other moms to be the best that they can be. I love getting emails from moms who have started their own businesses because of hearing my story.   5. A visit to New York isn’t complete until… You have visited the magnificent Central Park, taken in a show, shopped, and had a delicious meal. 6. Subways or cabs? Subways... NYC’s public transportation runs 24/7, which means at any time you can get anywhere within the city for only $2.75. But you always have the option to hail a cab at 2 a.m. too!

7. Best advice you’ve ever received? A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous!  8. One “must-have” beauty item? My lips have never been so soft and kissable since I started using BY TERRY Baume de Rose. I never leave home without it! 9. How do you define beauty? Beauty to me isn’t about having a pretty face. It’s about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a beautiful soul. B
