FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Spring is (almost) in the air, and I think our Kristin Cavallari cover is the perfect way to get you in a sunny, happy mood. I really love everything about it – the bold colors, the newmom glow that Kristin exuded all day long (her daughter Sailor was only 2 months old when we did the shoot), and her open and honest conversation with our Entertainment Editor Alexandra Anastasio. Kristin may be young, but she’s quite wise with the way she juggles it all: three small children, a bustling career, and a happy marriage. It’s a lot, to say the least, yet she handles it all with grace and that gorgeous smile! To read the full six-page, exclusive interview, turn to page 96. As I write this issue’s letter, I am on a return flight from Los Angeles, where we just launched the West Coast edition of our website BellaLAMag.com at a fabulous charity event on Grammy night at the Playboy Mansion. Yes, just a few hours ago I was lucky enough to be a part of one of the last major events held at the famed mansion, and it didn’t disappoint. No sighting of Hef, but the stars came out in droves, and the evening was nothing short of magical. It’s certainly one that will never be forgotten… #BucketList, for sure!

CONTRIBUTORS MARCH/APRIL 2016
GILLES TOUCAS started out as a professional dancer and choreographer before picking up a camera. Toucas underwent several knee surgeries that curtailed his dancing. “Dancing was my passion and I’m so lucky I found another one.”
DIONNE CLARKE is the managing editor of the newly launched BellaLAMag.com, heading up the BELLA brand on the West Coast. As a celebrity journalist for many years, she has interviewed everyone from Oprah to George Clooney to Richard Branson. Clarke is now parlaying her passion for living a “BELLA lifestyle” to helping Angelenos live their best life via this new endeavor, as she continues to contribute her highlypopular “Postcards From LA” column to BELLA NYC (pages 146-147).

His photographs have appeared in many high profile magazines, such as Elle, Glamour, Vanity Fair, and BELLA. This issue Gilles’ oneof-a-kind style graces BELLA’s cover for the first time. See the full pictorial featuring Kristin Cavallari on pages 96-101.

This issue marks the premiere of a new column from model and actress KAKI WEST, who has been featured on more than a dozen magazine covers in the United States and throughout the world. “Top 5 With Kaki” (pages 36-37) reveals her fashion and style secrets and offers an inside look from the world of Hollywood. Designer Diaries MALAN BRETON By Laura Camerlengo
You have been designing clothing since age 11. What inspired you to pick up the pencil then? My grandmother – she was one of the most stylish women I have ever known. Although you did not formally study fashion, you are selftaught and have trained with top names in the field. Was there someone who really informed your aesthetic? I think most definitely Paul Cuss at Turnbull and Asser; his insight into fabric, old Savile Row construction, and fit were very influential. Your tagline states that your clothes are for those who “love an impeccably made garment.” Why is quality so important to you and your collections? I think without quality and oldworld construction, I would be doing a disservice to my clientele.
Photos: Norman Ding
Malan Breton has been very busy since he appeared on the third cycle of “Project Runway.” The Taiwan-born, New York-based fashion star is the brains behind his signature label, Malan Breton, as well as Malan Breton Fantôme, Malan Breton HOMME, and Malan Breton Bridal Collections. And while his luxurious designs are sought after by celebrity and royalty alike, the award-winning designer maintains that he creates first and foremost for those who “love an impeccably made garment.” Listen in…
Designs from Malan Breton's Spring/Summer 2016 runway presentation After opening a store, you moved into wholesale and opened offices in the Garment District. Why did you decide to keep your business in New York City? I fell in love with New York City when I first came here to live as a model in the 1990s. It is a place of great inspiration, and a great fashion capital of the world. Your designs are known for their beautiful fabrics, elegant materials, and intricate details. From where did you develop these signatures? I started studying fabrics as a boy, having so much glorious inspiration from Taiwan; the beautiful silks and brocades in my grandmother’s garments inspired me greatly. Your Spring/Summer 2015 collection – “A Journey to Taiwan” – was a return to your roots. What is the inspiration for your Spring/ Summer 2016 designs? The 2016 collection was inspired by the most beautiful resort location I have ever known, Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan. Is there a design from your Spring/Summer 2016 offerings that is your favorite? If so, why? I think my favorite pieces from the women’s collection are inspired by Mazu, and Hakka blue shirts – traditional elements of Taiwan.
Your garments have appeared on countless celebrities, both male and female, including Scarlett Johansson, Kerry Washington, Michael Bublé, Ariana Grande, and Daniel Craig, to name just a few. Is there one celebrity who you have especially enjoyed dressing? I would have to say that each of my clients has been a dream to dress, but Ariana Grande and her brother Frankie are very dear to me, like family. We all came up at the same time in New York City. I have so many beautiful memories with them. With countless awards, projects, and collections under your belt, what’s next for Malan Breton? I like the element of surprise, so … surprise! [Laughs] Stay tuned!

How to Sparkle with Substance By Pamela Pekerman
Whether it’s advancements in education, medical research, or other worthy causes, designers are creating dazzling baubles in support of meaningful charities. Here are some of my favorite ways to accessorize this season while also making a difference with your dollars.
Transforming Guns into Glitz Each year more than 17,000 American children fall victim to gun violence, evoking many of us to yearn for new solutions for change. Social entrepreneur Peter Thum is acting on that passion by transforming illegal guns and ammunition provided by police into high-end jewelry. Additionally, every Liberty United jewelry purchase funds non-profit programs to protect and save the lives of at-risk children. LibertyUnited.com
Encouraging Girls to Pursue Engineering Careers
Disrupting the Cycle of Violence After rising to the top editorial ranks in New York’s fashion industry, Ariela Suster returned to her home country of El Salvador with the mission to disrupt the cycle of violence that marks it as one of the most dangerous locations in the world. A series of fateful events led to the creation of SEQUENCE, a lifestyle brand that employs and empowers a group of at-risk youth to create vibrant, handcrafted artisanal products in their own community. Beloved jewelry designer Suz Somersall was shocked when she learned that only 7 percent of mechanical engineers are female. This startling stat lead her to found KiraKira, a 3D design academy that encourages young women to become engineers and jewelry designers. Students learn how to create and submit their own jewelry designs, while KiraKira 3D prints and sells those designs via KiraKira.com. Proceeds of the students’ sales go directly to their college tuition fund. KiraKira.com

Top 5 With
Kaki Hello BELLA readers, I am a model, wife, mother, and lover of all things fabulous. Each issue I will be giving you “Top 5 With Kaki,” as well as an inside scoop from a celebrity or industry insider. I’m so excited to take this journey with you into the land of fabulousness. It’s spring … time to throw off that big black overcoat and walk to the land of floral prints, pastels, and cropped jackets! I have scoured the racks of designer after designer to come up with my top 5 trends for this spring. Enjoy, and please dress fabulously!
Kaki Big kisses,
1. Ruffles, ruffles, and yes – more ruffles. Just thinking about chiffon ruffles makes me giddy! Match a spring sheer floral print sundress with anything ruffled for the perfect day to night look.
5. Slip into a something more comfortable. Inspired by everyone’s fave – sleepwear – slip dresses are going to be everywhere this spring. From the bedroom to the street, we’ll be seeing more sleepwear as daywear soon.
2. Give ‘em the cold shoulder. Spring is all about giving a sneak peek of summer, so show off those sexy shoulders! From shoulder cut-outs to off-the-shoulder blouses to one-shoulder dresses, bare shoulders are definitely in!
3. Drench yourself in silk! Silk is the “it” material this spring. Flowy and sensual, silky sun dresses, blouses, and boxy jackets will be your new favorite spring pieces.
4. Crochet – just in time for Coachella! Throw on a crochet bikini or a crochet cover-up for the perfect spring break or favorite music festival outfit. Think 1970’s vibes meets today’s hipster style.
1. You should always have an array of tape. That includes anything from surgical tape, to masking tape, to scotch tape.
Red Carpet Secrets With Taylor Jacobson, Stylist To The Stars
2. You must own an assortment of undergarments: Spanx, thongs, girdles, and bras. 3. Baby powder is key in case someone can’t fit into their shoes. It helps you slip into them and also cools you off. 4. Always bring a tailor with you. It’s not fun when your dresses get stuck or they bust open. 5. Always keep a Xanax in your clutch. Dear Fashion Doctor,
Kate Spade Lisbeth Trench Coat Nothing will ever be more classic and forever than a neutral-colored trench coat. This is a must-have item when building your wardrobe. $1898, KateSpade.com
A new year has come and my look has stayed the same once again. I’m approaching my ‘30s and I’m in dire need of a new look. I’m 5’7” and pretty lean; I stay in shape by spinning and attending kickboxing classes. I currently work in public relations for a huge athletic company. I spend so much time keeping my physical body healthy and in shape, but I have no idea how to dress this canvas I have created.
I live in Manhattan with my fiancé and we lead a very fun, young, and relaxed lifestyle. I spend most of my time in yoga pants or some other form of hip athletic gear. However, as I transition into my ‘30s, I’m embarking on not only a new life with my fiancé but also a new career. I’m opening my very own boutique PR firm, and while I’m beyond qualified experience-wise and intellectually, I feel that my look is holding me back from confidently walking into my new world.

Dear Lost Fitness Girl, What a story! Let me start by applauding you for knowing and understanding that image is important. As you embark on this new career path, it’s vital that you look the part you’re playing. There is nothing worse than a woman who is knowledgeable, ambitious, and smart, yet her image is childish and coarse. Never think that you have to sacrifice being refined for being youthful. There is no choice to be made. No matter what your personal style, you should always have an elegance to your look. I want you to have fun with your wardrobe, but remember that classic pieces for someone like you who is just beginning to build a wardrobe will be the fluid as your closet needs to create your own personal style. Wear those fun jeans you may own, but add a pair of classic pumps and a crisp white shirt. This is how you create balance. Now is the best time for change – you are exiting your ‘20s and saying hello to your ‘30s, a husband, and a sophisticated new career. My style prescription will give you just what you need for your next chapter in life. Congrats and enjoy! Sincerely,
The Fashion Doctor

A Talented Jewel By Jaclyn Mastropasqua
There’s no question that success is in this beauty queen’s blood. Actress, model, singer, and designer Sophie Tweed-Simmons is the daughter of rock legend Gene Simmons and actress/Playboy model Shannon Tweed. Since starring on A&E’s hit reality show “Gene Simmons: Family Jewels” with her family, the 23-year-old has also appeared on the big screen in movies such as “Sex, Marriage and Infidelity” and “Perception.” Her talents extend way beyond the screen, however. In 2012, we saw a glimpse of Tweed-Simmons’ musical talent when she landed a singing audition for “The X Factor.” Although she was only on the show a short time, her unique voice made it hard to ignore her talent. She later went on to release a cover version of Sixpence None The Richer’s classic song, “Kiss Me,” a single that went to number one on Spotify in October 2015 and garnered more than three million views. It’s no surprise that Tweed-Simmons’ singing career is on the rise as well: Her debut EP, scheduled for release later this year, will feature all of her original songs (yes, she writes and performs!). We’ll also get a chance to watch her combine her two passions, singing and acting, on the big screen in the romantic musical “Country Crush,” which will also premiere this year. Tweed-Simmons appreciates her special ability to leverage the best of both worlds. “If I need advice on music, I can ask my dad, and if I need advice on acting, I can ask my mom. It’s really nice to have a support system that understands what I am aiming for.” Catch up with Sophie on her blog (SophieTSimmons.com) and her new online magazine #NoFilter (SophieTSimmons.com/no-filter). Three Blushes You Need Now By Rachel Paul
Searching for the perfect shade of blush is like searching for glitter left behind by the fairy godmother: It’s a beautiful idea, but it doesn’t exist. I am an artist who believes in wardrobing blushes. No one ever told you to wear only one lipstick, so why should we be constrained to only one blush? I like to have a few blushes in my personal collection; a vibrant, a nude, and a natural… A vibrant blush will steal the show in a fresh and modern way as seen on Naomi Watts. It often hits its popularity pique in the spring and summer. Here, Jennifer Lopez paired a nude blush with her sultry eye and a beige lip. Nudes are usually worn with dramatic makeup looks and are often applied heavily below the cheekbones. A natural blush is the one you reach for to add just enough color. Wear it like Beyoncé to balance out a bold lip in the evening, or during the day to bring life to a lackluster complexion. Now that you know what types of blush you’re looking for, how do you know what vibrant, nude, and natural mean for you? Find your skin tone to find out…
Nude: Muted mauves work best. Stay away from anything too orangey that will create a sallow appearance, and keep the intensity light.
Nude: Creating dimension and depth, a beige blush leaves room for creativity on the eyes or lips.
Nude: Deep mahogany will complement any makeup look. Keep it understated by skipping shimmer on this one.
Vibrant: Go for a crisp watermelon pink. Remember to keep this shade on the apples of the cheeks and blend, blend, blend!
Natural: Find a rose tone that mimics your natural flushed color, which is also probably similar to the inside of your lip. Try a cream or liquid stain for a skin-like finish.
Vibrant: Be bold with a bright coral! Smile and apply with fingertips to the center of the cheeks for a pop of color that will light up a room.
Natural: A slight twinkle of rose gold on the cheeks and a coat of mascara is all you need to put your best face forward. The gold shimmer will prevent the rose from turning too muddy.
Vibrant: Playing with bright colors can be scary, but don’t be intimidated! Once it’s on the skin, you will see how the contrast instantly brightens up the complexion.
Natural: For a natural flush, seek out a plum that has some red to prevent the cool tone from turning ashy.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL
From Actor to Activist and Discovering Her Roots Audiences know her from her multitude of hit TV and film roles, but there’s a lot more to Eliza Dushku than meets the eye. In addition to acting, the Boston native also spends her time as a producer, a college student, and an activist for a charity that’s close to her heart.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL Unexpected Opportunities It was at her brother’s audition that 10-year-old Dushku caught the attention of producers, though not in a conventional way – she tripped and fell. That incident led to a phone call that changed everything. “The first time I was called to go in for a screen test, my mother answered the phone and said, ‘Thank you, but no thank you. I don’t think this is what my daughter’s going to do in her life, but we’re flattered,’” recalls Dushku. Thankfully, Dushku’s brothers suggested she take the offer for a free trip to Hollywood. “They didn’t think I would get the part,” she jokes. But one thing led to another, and Dushku landed her first starring role in the film “That Night” alongside Juliette Lewis and C. Thomas Howell. From there, she went on to appear with heavy-hitters Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in “This Boy’s Life,” and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in “True Lies.”
“I KNEW IT WAS ONE OF THOSE ROLES WHERE YOUR HEART RATE SPEEDS UP AND YOU CAN FEEL AND SEE YOURSELF IN HER.” As Dushku continued to work, she was encouraged by the support of her family. “My mother was always interested in unconventional ways [of doing things], so if I was having fun and it didn’t interfere with my schoolwork, she let me go for it,” says the actress. “When the time came to go to college, she encouraged me to stay in school.”
Just as the actress was preparing to start her freshman year of college, however, along came the call to appear in the WB’s hit show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Slated for just three episodes, Dushku looked at the job as an opportunity to earn some extra money before starting her first semester. But when producers asked her to stay for the season, her education was put on hold – until now.
Heading Back Home “For 15 years I said I was going to go back to Boston to get that freshman year under my belt, and as soon as I did the people from ‘Banshee’ called,” says Dushku. Luckily, the scheduling worked out and the actress was able to film Cinamax’s hit action show without having to defer her education. The fourth and final season begins airing on April 1st. “It’s funny because I sort of live this double life now,” she says. “My friends watch me go from being a study buddy to doing my Hollywood thing.” Though the return to college is recent, Dushku says education has always been a major part of her life. In fact, her mother was a college professor for almost 50 years. “She encouraged me throughout the 25 years I was acting to further my studies in between.” “When I got the call from [co-creator and executive producer] Jonathan Tropper, I knew it was one of those roles where your heart rate speeds up and you can feel and see yourself in her,” says the actress. Dushku had a lot of fun playing special agent Veronica Dawson, a sexy, reckless FBI profiler. “She’s intense but also quick and witty, and a perfectionist when it comes to her work. She knows she’s in a boy’s world, so she finds ways to insert herself into their circle. I can relate to that.” The season was shot last summer in Philadelphia – an experience Dushku describes as “epic.”

ElizaDushku @ElizaDushku Eliza Dushku “It was an awesome shoot and it made me realize there is a part of that world [acting] that fulfills me,” she says. “When I went back to school, I wasn’t sure how things would turn out or how I’d feel. But I know after this experience that acting is a part of me. Now it’s going to be about navigating both worlds and essentially leading a double life.”
Discovering Her Roots To add yet another layer to her double life, the actress and student also runs her own production company, Boston Diva, with her brother Nate. She is extremely proud of the projects they’ve been developing together, especially “Dear Albania,” a story that’s been five years in the making. “It’s a personal story of me going to find my family and my roots, but also with an educational and historical background,” explains Dushku. “There has never been anything like this done on the country, which is difficult to believe.” She describes the project as an hour-long love letter to a country that has been unknown for many years. She and her brother wanted to reintroduce the Albania their ancestors came from, a country their father knew intimately, and share it with the rest of the world. “We were excited to do this and present it to our father, nieces, and nephews, and for all Albanians who don’t feel represented,” says Dushku. Dushku is also looking forward to working on a biopic of the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe this summer. The film is slated for production in New York, and also stars Matt Smith from “Doctor Who” and Zosia Mamet from “Girls.” “This is another project we’ve been working on for many years, and it’s finally coming to
fruition,” says Dushku. In order to do that, the actress took the spring semester off to focus on the project. “My degree is a marathon, not a sprint,” she says. “I have this other life and I want to tend to both responsibly and appropriately.”
Passion Projects In addition to acting, producing, and studying, Dushku is an activist, dedicating her time to the causes about which she’s most passionate. She is on the board of her mother’s nonprofit organization, THRIVEGulu, a non-governmental organization focused on building and operating a trauma-healing and reflection center in Northern Uganda for former child soldiers and victims of war and trauma who are trying to rebuild their lives. In fact, Dushku led her first trip to Africa this month.
“I HAVE THIS OTHER LIFE AND I WANT TO TEND TO BOTH RESPONSIBLY AND APPROPRIATELY.” Looking back to her early days as an actress, Dushku says the best advice she ever received came on the set of “True Lies.” “Jamie Lee Curtis told me, ‘Have another life. Have a plan B, because while this can be the most extraordinary and exciting business, you don’t control it. You don’t know when your next job will be, and you need to have something that fulfills you and brings you joy.’” With the multitude of projects on her plate, Dushku seems to have taken Curtis’ advice to heart. “I went ahead and found [at least] five things in life that fulfill me, and to this day I still hear her words.” B

ZUCKERBERG Forging Her Own Path in a Dot-Com World BY ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO PHOTOS: PHILIP FISCHETTI STYLING: MINDY GURA & PAULA ORLAN HAIR: DION MOORE FOR ANGELO DAVID SALON | ELCHIM MILANO MAKEUP: VIRGINIA ALIAGA FOR ANGELO DAVID SALON | SMASHBOX COSMETICS LOCATION: HOTEL HUGO, NYC
Ranked among one of the “50 Digital Power Players” by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s clear when talking to Randi Zuckerberg that she is breaking ground and forging ahead in the rapidly growing world of technology. Her passion for life and her work is infectious; in talking with Zuckerberg, you can’t help but want to learn more about this businesswoman and mother of two young boys.

THE NEW YORK LIFE GETTING STARTED
“I’m always looking toward amazing women who are doing things in various high places and aspiring to do bigger things,” says Zuckerberg. For all her successes so far, she’s the first to say there’s still a lot more to accomplish. When she was a young girl growing up in Westchester, Zuckerberg’s dreams for the future were much different than the path she’s since followed. “It wasn’t something I could say I wanted to do because social media and all these innovations I work on every day weren’t even a dream anyone had at that point,” she says. Instead, she dreamed of a singing career on Broadway. “That was my biggest life dream and I tabled it to be realistic,” she says. “I kept tabling it through my tech career because I felt that’s what people around me wanted me to do.” With that dream on hold, Zuckerberg’s path led her to Harvard University, where she studied psychology with a focus on business. “Without even knowing it, I was studying how to create a good company culture,” she says. It’s an area that has always been important to her as she advises start-ups and invests in various projects.
“With technology moving at the speed it is, part of being lucky and successful in today’s society is being open to new opportunities.” 82 BELLANYC.COM
Around this time, the computer science era began to emerge. As a freshman in college, Zuckerberg noticed that the seniors who majored in this area were being hired by big tech companies like Microsoft and Google and given six-figure salaries right out of school. “As a woman I felt so far behind that I could never
catch up,” she says. “There were no women in the computer science major, and I felt like it was out of my reach.” These feelings of exclusion were what first drove her to encourage women to pursue technology and entrepreneurship.
LIVING IN A DIGITAL WORLD
Fresh out of college, Zuckerberg began her career at the New York advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, followed by a stint at Forbes, where she worked as a production assistant on the financial TV show “Forbes on Fox.” It was only a year later that Zuckerberg took a leap of faith and left New York to join her brother Mark at Facebook as a marketing director out in Silicon Valley. “I saw myself as a New York girl in the creative industry, and all of a sudden the opportunity presented itself to move all the way out to the suburbs of California to work on a tech start-up.” She describes her time there as an “amazing experience,” one that affirmed her belief in exploring new avenues. “With technology moving at the speed it is, part of being lucky and successful in today’s society is being open to new opportunities.” “It really is such a different experience when you are working on something you have ownership in, and are working with people who are hungry, ambitious, and passionate about what they’re building,” says Zuckerberg. One of her proudest moments from that time was work done during the 2008 election and the 2009 inauguration. Social media changed the entire tone of the political conversation and gave a voice to people who up until then had been voiceless, she says. That opportunity allowed the budding entrepreneur to roll up her sleeves and take on much more responsibility than most at a young age. Her advice for anyone who has

THE NEW YORK LIFE the risk tolerance to start a company or work for a start-up to embrace the opportunity.
MAKING AN IMPACT
In 2011, Zuckerberg was ready to branch out and start making her own mark on the digital world. And in just a few short years she’s achieved a multitude of success. She is now the CEO and founder of Zuckerberg Media, a boutique marketing firm and production company that works with high-profile organizations and Fortune 500 companies. She also serves as editor-in-chief of a digital lifestyle website, and is a New York Times best-selling author of both a children’s book, “Dot,” and an adult nonfiction book, “Dot Complicated: Untangling Our Wired Lives.” That’s in addition to headlining her own business radio show, “Dot Complicated with Randi Zuckerberg,” on SiriusXM Radio. This month she’ll star in a new TV show, “Quit Your Day Job,” for the Oxygen Network. The series gives women from all walks of life a chance to take their business ideas to the next level. “We had a lot of entrepreneurs come through who would have never gotten a chance to walk into a venture capital firm,” says Zuckerberg, who is one of the show’s four investors and mentors. Indeed, being a mentor is something that’s important to Zuckerberg. “I’ve had a lot of wonderful mentors along the way, and I’m very thankful to all of them,” she says, mentioning financial powerhouse Suze Orman in particular. She describes Orman as a “woman’s woman” who aspires to empower other
women. “She practices what she preaches,” says Zuckerberg.
EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION
Another project Zuckerberg is anticipating is an animated children’s TV show based on her book “Dot,” which will be premiering in the fall in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company on Sprout.
“Don’t shelve who you are to fit into other people’s expectations.”
Zuckerberg is excited to bring the character she considers like a daughter to viewers. She believes that in order for girls to think about a career in tech, they need to see girls in pop culture who are “techies.” It’s also a project she can share with her children. “My son and I went into his preschool and read ‘Dot’ together to the class,” she says. “To see him looking proud and excited was a really special moment.” In the course of following her dreams, Zuckerberg has learned some life lessons along the way. She stayed true to her passion for Broadway, making that dream a reality in 2014 with a two-week run in the musical “Rock of Ages.” That inspired her to continue to share her philosophy about goal setting. “If you have a passion for something, don’t be afraid to be a three-dimensional person – your career and your family will be there,” she says. “Don’t shelve who you are to fit into other people’s expectations.” This past summer, Zuckerberg and her family moved to the city she’s longed to come home to. Settling on the Upper West Side, Zuckerberg says she’s “living the dream.” “I feel like I can return to New York with my head held high.” B

Visit Europe Without Leaving New York By Barbara Bellesi
GOETHE-INSTITUT NEW YORK 30 Irving Place New York, NY 10003 212-439-8700 Goethe.de/NewYork
Dreaming of a European vacation? If you can’t make the time for a Roman holiday this spring, consider hailing a cab instead of catching a plane or grabbing a MetroCard instead of a passport and visiting one of the many European cultural centers in New York City. Manhattan might only be about 22 square miles in size, but it manages to fit all of Europe within its borders, thanks to centers and institutes that celebrate the language, culture, and people of the EU. Bon voyage!
The Goethe-Institut New York serves as regional coordinator of 10 locations throughout North America, including Boston, Atlanta, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Mexico City. In the future, there will also be a GoetheInstitut in Havana, Cuba. Language Lessons: German lessons are available for children and adults both in person and online. Coursework for adults ranges from beginner (A1) to advanced (C2) and is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Library: The library at the Goethe-Institut New York is one of only a small number of German language lending libraries in the country. The library features four concentrations: contemporary art, contemporary and classic literature, film, and history from the late 1800s to the present. Why You Should Go: Ludlow 38 is the art space (sponsored by the MINI car company) that houses work from German artists who have been invited to residencies in New York on an annual rotating basis.

QUEEN OF TRUFFLES By Daniel G. Hall
Truffles are perhaps the world’s most expensive food, often called the “diamonds of the kitchen.” BELLA had the honor of sitting down with the queen of truffles herself, Olga Urbani from Urbani Truffles. Talking with Urbani, it’s clear why this 164-year-old familyrun business continues to thrive. Born to Paolo and Olga Urbani, the truffle heiress, as she’s been referred, learned the meaning of hard work, tradition, and ethics early on. She has been a game changer for women in Italy through her foundation, Fondazione Marisa Bellisario. Urbani has also helped countless families with their medical needs through a medical facility, Fondazione Giulio Loreti Onlus, that she created and funds. For these reasons and more, BELLA is proud to spotlight Olga Urbani in our Influencer Issue. What is a typical day like for you? It is always crazy, even on Saturdays and Sundays. I work 15 hours a day because of the company in America [headquartered in New York]. When I finish my job in Italy, I have to start calling America and with the six-hour time difference, it is very hard. In the morning I go early to my company because my employees need me. They need to be guided. Even if I imagine my company being a great family, we are all at the same level. The formula for success for an entrepreneur like me is to be all together facing the problems of the company. What is the formula for having six generations of success? The formula is to not think you know everything. I am there every day to learn from my people. They deal with everything, and they teach me a lot. The formula is humility – to never think I’ve arrived, that I am number one. I always think I have to learn a lot and better myself.
Olga Urbani and BELLA Publisher, Daniel Hall What inspires and motivates you? What inspires me is the name “Urbani.” The name comes first, before anything else. We have to do everything to increase the prestige of our name. Our goal is to make a larger number of people think of us as serious people who are doing great business and doing it properly. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? In the beginning, my father was not confident in me. I remember hearing him tell someone, “I created an empire and all I have is a daughter.” That was sort of like advice, because I said to him, “So, that is what you think? You think just because I am a woman, I cannot run the company? Okay, I will live my life to change your opinion.” From that day on, I did my best. Every effort was to demonstrate that a woman could do better. At the end of his life he recognized that and said, “You’re much better than I am.” He saw that I was very modern and very smart.
You’ve done a lot for women in Rome. Where do you see that going? I am a member of Fondazione Marsia Bellisario, which was created for managers who are women. We changed the law in Italy so that in public companies, a certain percentage of the administration committee needs to be women. Before that law it was a disaster – [it was] all men, everywhere. Now you see men and women in very important spots because of this law. I am very proud to be part of the group that did this. It was very hard to protect. We had to go against all the political parties and the people who were scared of what we could do, but now it’s getting better and better. We are all satisfied. You’ve also done a lot of work with the sick. Tell us more about that foundation. The foundation started with the intention of taking care of cancer patients, but then a baby came. How can you say, “No, we can’t help you” to a baby? From that moment on we started helping those with all kinds of problems, not only cancer. Sometimes we deal with children with other diagnoses. The foundation became bigger and bigger, and now we have 180 doctors who work for us.
Bruno, Olga, Giammarco, and Francesco Urbani Public medicine in Italy doesn’t go very well. People need to be cured first in their soul, and then medically. Public medical care is very fast; they don’t pay attention to the real needs of someone. I feel that if you have the opportunity, you have to help people. The most important thing in my life is to give someone else what I have, not to keep everything for myself. That is the only moment I really am happy – when I can help and heal. Who are your mentors? Through the medical foundation, I have had a chance to meet a lot of people who are suffering; people who are suffering teach you a lot more than people who are happy. Also, as we suffer we grow. When we are very happy we don’t think about our growth. You have been part of your family business for a long time. If you weren’t, what would you have done instead? My dream was to be a writer. I like to write very much; I do it as my secret. In my bag you can always find a booklet that I use to write down what I think. In writing, I really recognize myself.
“You think just because I am a woman, I cannot run the company? Okay, I will live my life to change your opinion. From that day on, I did my best. Every effort was to demonstrate that a woman could do better.” What makes Urbani different? We are authentic. We are a real story of a truffle family business that started 164 years ago. In this period, we increased the quality, technology, and volume of our products, organization, and service. I think we are the only company that gives such service with truffles and truffle products. This year we worked on 140 tons of truffles – can you imagine?! I think this makes us very special because we have inherited from past generations what no one else can. Six generations is a lot. It is also very weird because in Italy all the companies break, they fight. You don’t see a family business making it for a long time like Urbani. This is an important added value. What advice would you give to young female entrepreneurs? They have to learn to dream. I talk very often to young people in interviews, people who want to work for me, and I see that they do not have dreams. They think everything is impossible. I suggest that they start thinking that everything is possible if they want it. What would you consider your greatest accomplishments so far? My biggest satisfactions in my life are my two children, Luca and Francesco, taking over the family business. I did it in a very strange way. I started showing them that I didn’t want them coming in, but when I realized that they were following me, my tradition, my business, I was very happy. That was the number-one thing in my life – I know that they will carry out the business and it’s not finished with me. How do you define beauty? Beauty has to do with your inner self. You are beautiful if you are beautiful inside. Beauty also has to do with the relationships you have with others. Beauty is if you have a big heart, if you’re generous, and if you’re positive. Beauty is loving your family and taking care of them. B

Fans of the beautiful and hardworking Kristin Cavallari know she’s a woman who has come a long way. From her days on reality TV to making a name for herself in the world of business and fashion, Cavallari is carving out a path that includes marriage (her husband is Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler), motherhood, and embracing all the exciting opportunities life brings her way. A High School Success Story Before she started down an entrepreneurial path, Cavallari was best known for her time spent on MTV’s “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” and “The Hills,” two wildly popular reality TV shows. Reality programming wasn’t as prevalent in 2004 as it is today, and as a high school junior, Cavallari found it exciting to enter unknown territory. “At the time I didn’t have any reservations about joining the show,” she says. “You had to be 16 years old to audition and it became this competitive thing in school; everyone wanted it.”
While the group of students cast couldn’t have known just how successful the show would become, Cavallari envisioned “Laguna Beach” more along the lines of MTV’s hit show “True Life.” “I don’t think any of us expected it to turn into what it did,” she says. “I didn’t expect to be portrayed the way I was.” That’s why, when executives from MTV asked her to join the hit reality show “The Hills” a few years later, she was hesitant. She eventually signed on, but this time she viewed it strictly as a job. “In order to enjoy it and have fun with it I was game for whatever they wanted me to do,” she says. “But at the end of the day I went home and had a normal life.”
From Reality TV to Real Life Fast-forward 10 years, and it’s clear how far Cavallari has come. “I feel like I’ve finally found happiness,” she says. “I’m in a good place and am ready to let people in.” Fans may think they know the blonde beauty based on her celebrity status, but her new book, “Balancing in Heels,” makes it clear that the perception has been the media’s creation. “I’m comfortable in my own skin and am no longer affected by what others think,” she says. “This is me; there’s no sugarcoating who I am.” The book stemmed from Cavallari’s self-titled lifestyle app that garnered downloads, popularity, and media attention. In it, Cavallari talks openly about her relationships, something she hasn’t done in the past, and lets readers see what makes her tick. From motherhood to her relationship with beauty, fitness, and living a healthy lifestyle – something about which she is extremely passionate – the first-time author shares tips she hopes readers will take to heart. “It was a really therapeutic process,” she says. “I poured my heart and soul into this book.”
Romper: Finders Keepers Earrings: Chinese Laundry
Rapid Fire 5 Favorite Accessory: A good pair of booties Favorite Shoe from Her Line: Black fringe booty – “Fringe is so in right now.” Classic Look: “A great blazer and jeans will never go out of style.” Hottest 2016 Trends: “Lace-up sandals and lace-up heels are going to be popular. We saw them a bit last year, but they’ll be really big this spring and summer.” Favorite Designer: Balmain
Romper: Alice McCall Earrings: Melinda Maria Shoes: Chinese Laundry
Fashion Forward With the title of author now on her resume, Cavallari has yet another accomplishment to add to her achievements in the fashion world. For the past four years, she has been working together with Chinese Laundry, a women’s footwear company, to create her own line of shoes. She was a fan of the brand growing up, which added to Cavallari’s excitement of partnering with them.
“It’s more fun now because I have so much confidence and I no longer second-guess myself like I did in the beginning,” she says. “I’m having a blast.” In addition to her successful shoe line, Cavallari launched a jewelry line with one of her best friends. Emerald Duv, which debuted last year, features dainty, layering, and stackable pieces, and much more. “We recently launched candles and hats and are turning the site into more of a lifestyle website, with the hope of one day including home goods as well,” she says.
Putting Family First KristinCavallari @KristinCav BalancingInHeels.com EmeraldDuv.com ChineseLaundry.com
“I’ve always been a big shoe girl; I used to steal my mom’s shoes and wear them,” says Cavallari. In fact, having her own shoe line has long been Cavallari’s dream – when she was 18, she created an inspiration book in the hope of one day designing her own line. After teaming up with Chinese Laundry to write an online fashion blog, the future designer accepted the opportunity, hoping it would lead to something more. And indeed it did. Cavallari started off designing two shoe collections a year, and that number has almost doubled, with new designs coming out almost every 90 days. She’s involved in the complete design process, giving her a strong sense of who her customers are and what they like. Plus, seeing her very own designs come to life and become number-one sellers has been extremely gratifying.
Amid all her projects, Cavallari says her most important role is being a mom. Of course, prioritizing her family sometimes means turning down career opportunities that would keep her away from her husband and children, something she’s not ready to do just yet. “Maybe when the kids are in school full time and Jay’s done with football it might change, but right now they’re my priority,” she says. Despite declining numerous hosting opportunities, Cavallari says her career is better in a lot of ways because she is doing what she loves and only saying yes to the things she absolutely wants to do. “I can make my own hours and do all these great things while being a stay-at-home mom,” she says. With three children under the age of 3, Cavallari finds support from both her husband and her mom, who lives nearby in Chicago. She values face time when they’re all home together, especially during family dinners. “I love talking and connecting and I want my kids to be good, respectful children and have good hearts,” she says. Still, she knows there will be ups and downs, and bumps along the way because it’s all a part of children growing up. “I’d be lying if I said I had it all figured out – I don’t,” Cavallari says. “None of us have all the answers; we’re just trying to live our lives and do the best we can.” B

But unlike you might expect, this place is not kitschy, nor does it serve up ridiculous dishes. Start off with their incredible beer and bacon flight, which pairs world-class bacon with refreshing brews. Move on to any number of their dishes, each as good as the next, ranging from bacon Caesar salads and BLTs to fish tacos and lobster rolls. Each dish has some bacon in it, but they are not overloaded. They even have an impressive cocktail menu, some of which boast bacon as a garnish or baconinfused bourbon, yet others that have no bacon component at all. The perfect spot for weekend brunch, watching a sports game, or just getting your fix of bacon, this is one niche spot we can’t get enough of. -Amanda Mactas

At Trinity Place, located in the heart of the Financial District inside the historic Trinity Building, guests can wine and dine within the 35-ton bank vault doors that date back to 1904. It was converted in 2006 into a fine dining and bar experience that’s a true treasure. There are two dining areas to enjoy, including a front bar area that boats a 40-foot mahogany bar anchored between 5-inch-thick steel cut walls of the original vault. The second option is the stately dining room, crowned with an original brass chandelier that was once part of the private meeting room for the bank’s executive board members. GETTING TO KNOW
His Road to Redemption By Courtenay C. Hall
Scott Stapp began his 22-year career as lead vocalist and founding member of the multiplatinum alternative rock band, Creed. Despite a thriving career during the late 90s and early 2000s, Stapp’s life took a downward spiral that ultimately left him homeless and addicted to drugs and alcohol. The media coverage was massive during both of these significant periods in his life, and as Stapp admits, he “went off the deep end for awhile.” After hitting such a low point in his life, and upon receiving a bipolar diagnosis, Stapp has been able to recreate himself into a stronger, more faith-based family man, and his honesty about it all is a truly refreshing story that must be told. 108 BELLANYC.COM
You have had an amazing career, one that many dream of, but you’ve had some very tough times as well. You seem to have gotten through it and become a better man, which is very admirable. What do you want people to know about the man behind the headlines? I think I would want to be known as a survivor. When I sit and look back at my life, my childhood, where I’ve came from, and where my life has taken me, it hasn’t been easy. It seems like it was a series of obstacles, one after another. All of which could have easily sent my life’s course in a completely different direction. I definitely think I am a survivor. How were you able to overcome all of those obstacles? [It was through] the love and support that have been given to me by my wife and family. When you’re broken and shattered into a million different pieces, there are times you need to be carried, and my wife has been that rock for me. She carried our entire family when I couldn’t. I’ve always been blessed with strong friendships and a strong support system and they, too, have helped carry me through those difficult, challenging times in my life. But in all honesty, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today without my wife.

“We are fighting for our love, fighting for our marriage, and fighting for our family. That is the greatest example we can leave for our children.”
I recently watched the new season of “Couples Therapy,” and was surprised to see you and your wife on it. It must have been very difficult speaking so publically about such personal struggles. It was probably one of the most difficult experiences of our lives, but we felt it was necessary to go that route because of my personal crises last year. I put our family out there. This gave us an opportunity to tell our story and tie things up and let people know we are fighting through it. We have real problems just like everyone else. We are fighting for our love, fighting for our marriage, and fighting for our family. That is the greatest example we can leave for our children. It hasn’t been easy for my wife to hold it all together. That’s been a big motivation for both of us.
UPCOMING TOUR DATES: April 30: Moonstone Music Festival - Orlando, FL May 20-22: Rock'n Derby - Schaghticoke, NY July 14-16: Rock Fest - Cadott, WI In the show you talked a lot about being a Christian; what role has God played in your recovery? The most important role. It’s the foundation of our marriage – the glue that holds us together and guides our lives. It’s been critical for our relationship to have that faith in God and that faith in Christ in common. We will both tell you that without that we wouldn’t have made it this far. I’ll be honest with you, during a couple of those low points, I asked, “God, why me?” I got into that victim mentality and really felt like why did I have to have bipolar? Why do I have to deal with this? Thank God for my wife to help point me in the right direction and get me back in line spiritually and change my force. That is what we do – we are accountable to each other, not only personally but also spiritually, and that’s been so important to our marriage. What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned through all of this? That is a good question. There have been so many [things], so I am trying to pick the key ones. I think the greatest lesson has been to let go of control, and I mean that in every area of my life. It seemed that I was trying to control things,
either what I was putting into my body or what I was not putting into my body in terms of my addiction. By letting go of control, I am able to stay in the present. Acceptance has been another big lesson that I’ve learned – that I can’t worry about the mistakes I have made nor about the ones I may make in the future. I have to be present in the now and accept life on life’s terms. I’ve got to take it one day at a time. What is something you wish you could tell your younger self? I would tell myself that life is not a party… and not to take things for granted. What was the turning point in your career? When did you know that you made it? I think when the fourth single on my first album hit number one and at the same time Creed moved to arenas. That is when I realized I made it. That must have been an incredible feeling. It was surreal; those are the moments I will never forget. What did your time off teach you? I did a lot of soul searching and worked really hard on myself, medically and spiritually. During that time I had moments where I realized how much I love what I do and how thankful and grateful I am to have the opportunity to do what I love. If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose this career? Absolutely, without a doubt. B BELLANYC.COM 109

MIND+BODY If your cycle length falls outside this range, you may not be ovulating (releasing an egg) each month, which will decrease your chances of getting pregnant. The medical term used to refer to this set of problems is “anovulatory disorders.” There are different causes for anovulation, and it is recommended that you talk with your gynecologist if this is a regular problem for you. Some of the reasons that women can fail to ovulate are: weight-related (being too thin or too heavy), an overactive or underactive thyroid, extreme stress or exercise, and in rare cases, benign or cancerous growths within the brain.
Trying to Get Pregnant With Irregular Periods? By Dr. Katherine Melzer-Ross
Getting pregnant can be challenging, and can become even more so if your periods are irregular. But you’re not alone: up to onethird of patients with infertility have issues with irregular periods. What exactly are considered irregular periods? Well, the average menstrual cycle occurs every 28 days. Cycles that are shorter or longer by more than seven days are considered abnormal (in other words, cycles that are shorter or longer than every 21-35 days).
However, the most common reason for irregular periods and anovulation is a disorder called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). In fact, it is a hormonal disorder that affects 5-10% of all females. Women are often unaware that they have this diagnosis until they start trying to conceive, as many of them are placed on birth control as teenagers to help regulate their periods. The diagnosis of PCOS is made using three criteria: the inability of the ovaries to release an egg on a regular basis (anovulation resulting in irregular periods); signs of increased male hormone levels, such as acne or hair growth in certain areas; and/or polycysticappearing ovaries on ultrasound. If you have two out of three of these, you fit the diagnosis of PCOS. Why is it important to determine the cause of irregular periods? If one the above problems is identified, your doctor or a fertility specialist can talk about ways to treat the
“Women are often unaware that they have this [POC] until they start trying to conceive, as many of them are placed on birth control as teenagers to help regulate their periods.” underlying issue to allow for more predictable ovulation and more regular periods. In addition, some of these underlying conditions can have other effects on your overall health as well. For example, patients with PCOS are at higher risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and overgrowth of the uterine lining. For women who are not trying to conceive, your doctor may recommend birth control pills to help regulate your periods so that they come monthly. If you are trying to conceive, your doctor can help determine if you would benefit from taking a medicine to assist with ovulation. Clomiphene citrate is the most commonly used ovulation-inducing fertility medicine. It is taken orally for five days of your cycle to help induce an egg to grow within the ovary so that you can ovulate and potentially become pregnant. If you have irregular periods and are trying to get pregnant, or you’re frustrated, confused, and simply want some more answers, consider scheduling an appointment with your doctor or a fertility specialist to help maximize your chances of conceiving.

New Pasta Packs Protein and Taste By Sari Beth Rosenberg
If you’re like most health-conscious people, you’ve tried to eliminate pasta from your diet. Thanks to Banza pasta – made from chickpeas instead of wheat – you can put it back on your grocery list!
Why chickpeas? Because it’s “power pasta” • Double the protein • Nearly half the carbs • Four times the fiber • Gluten-free and grain-free • Low-glycemic • Vegan • Non-GMO
How It All Got Started
Rudolph recruited his brother Scott, who left his job in private equity to help co-found the business, and they launched Banza in August of 2014. The brothers appeared on “Restaurant Startup,” and received an investment from celebrity restaurateur Joe Bastianich (who also helped them get Banza into two Eataly stores). Now their pasta is in over 1700 stores nationwide, and they’re aspiring to give nutritional makeovers to other staple foods like cereal and pizza. “We are trying to make a food product that is not only nutritious, but also affordable, convenient, and accessible,” says Rudolph. 118 BELLANYC.COM

When he tricked his roommate cheese. into thinking it was traditional wheat pasta, he knew this could be more than just a hobby.

Chris Wood’s Transformational Fitness Tips By Sari Beth Rosenberg
His character in “The Vampire Diaries” embodied pure evil, but now Chris Wood stars in CW’s “Containment” as the powerful S.W.A.T. officer during a deadly epidemic outbreak. Wood, who recently earned a spot on Variety’s 2015 “10 TV Actors to Watch” list, gained nearly 30 pounds for the role. Here’s an inside look at Wood’s transformational fitness regimen that can easily be adapted if you’re looking to “contain” a healthier lifestyle for yourself.
From Zero to 30
When Wood started preparing for his role in on the breakout CW show, he realized that it was going to take more than just great acting. “My character needed to have a relaxed power behind him, and sticking out my chest or showboating in that way in my smaller frame wasn’t going to work.”
Instead of cutting carbs, Wood increased his intake of healthy fats and protein. He started the day drinking a concoction of water, lime juice, and Himalayan sea salt on an empty stomach. “It’s an electrolyte boost that is supposed to help your body absorb nutrition better,” he explains. Wood also ate six meals a day and supplemented his normal meal intake with 500-600 calorie shakes made with healthy grains, proteins, and vegetables.

The 90-10 Rule
Wood emphasizes that quick diets and shortterm fixes don’t work. In order to truly make a body transformation, you must make a lifestyle adaptation instead. He also doesn’t believe in depriving yourself of the joys of life: “I enjoy a burger and fries sometimes, but spend the rest of the time exercising and eating healthily.” His mantra: Make healthy choices 90 percent of the time, and let yourself slide the other 10 percent.

MIND+BODY Winded from a morning at practice, April Holmes, the athlete favored to win the gold in track and field at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, cherishes any rest she can get. Though her down time has been scarce since her first track and field competitions in the Paralympics in 2002, her infectious smile and determination remains in all she does. Flashback to the beginning of it all, and Holmes is running track in college, something she figured would be a dead end after school. She studied mass communications and worked toward becoming the person on the other side of the camera, producing and directing for a sports network. “I prayed to God every day that He would give me a job in sports where I could travel and meet people,” Holmes recalls. Her destiny proved that He was listening and had a plan, but not one anyone would have imagined. When Holmes’ lost her leg in a tragic train accident in 2001, she found herself in a search for self-identity. “I was like, ‘Who am I? Where am I? What do I like and don’t like?’ What helped her get through,
“Figure out who you are and get back up…” surprisingly (or not so surprisingly) was athletics. Holmes knew that getting back to what she enjoyed most – running – would bring purpose back into her life. The surgeon who performed Holmes’ major surgery shared some magazine articles about the Paralympics, solidifying a new dream for the then-28-year-old. By “learning the disability” and how it affected her body, sports helped Holmes transition from the hospital bed back to her feet.

The recipient of the 2015 NCAA Inspiration Award has much to share about the spirit of determination: “Everyone falls down. To get past your own obstacles, you have to figure out who you are and get back up,” says Holmes, who was also named to the BMW Paralympics U.S. Performance Team. “The quicker you can create your goals, the quicker
you can reach your dreams.” Holmes’ constant upbeat support from friends and family was her inspiration. “They never let me fall.” Not only has Holmes’ changed physically, but she has also grown emotionally. “It has definitely opened my eyes to people with disabilities.” Before the accident, Holmes admitted she didn’t know anyone with a disability. As part of the April Holmes Foundation, which she began in 2002, she strives to give disabled people the opportunity to travel and meet others as she has been able to, all the while raising awareness of what is possible regardless of physical challenges. “My definition of beauty is to be able to look in the mirror and see through yourself. When you can be pleased with who you are on the inside as well as the outside, that is true beauty.”

Time for a Spring Wellness Check-up By Dr. Didier Demesmin, MD
Spring is around the corner, and I am curious to know how many of us kept our New Year’s resolutions. Do you even remember what they were? Why is it so challenging to keep the promises you make to yourself on January 1, and how can we improve our chances of keeping them? If you made any resolutions this year, my guess is at least one of them had to do with improving or maintaining your physical, mental, or emotional health. As a pain management physician, I see people who are in a lot of pain, and many times the medical issues could have been prevented if the patient had taken better care of their health. Usually, patients tell me that they neglected their health because they were too busy with other things. To prevent such a situation, you need to take your health into your own hands. Here’s how:
You are responsible for your own health and well-being, and your health deteriorates when it is not maintained. It is easy to avoid taking care of yourself by being too busy, however, your health and well-being should always be a priority. If you are in pain, don’t ignore it. Pain is your body’s way of communicating that something needs your attention. You should also make sure to have your own copy of your medical health record and bring it to all your medical appointments. Before all appointments, prepare a list of questions for your doctor and make sure to ask them all. Never forget to remind your physician of any medical allergies or conditions you may have.
Make sure to get all your information from credible and valuable resources – you have to be curious and seek out as much information as possible. If you are healthy now, learn how you can maintain your health.
If you are receiving treatment for a medical condition, make sure you understand the diagnosis and all your treatment options.
DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE
Unfortunately, we often neglect our health until we are faced with a condition that requires our attention. We are so busy running around that we forget that health should always be a priority. Playing an active role begins with taking preventative steps to reduce the chances of becoming injured. Paying attention to your posture and not smoking are things you can do every day to benefit your health in the long-term.
MAKE PLANS AND SET GOALS
Set long- and short-term goals, and be positive you can achieve them. It is helpful to keep a journal and write everything down so you can brainstorm your plan and keep track of your progress. Make sure you schedule regular medical checkups and keep the appointments. Pencil in some sort of physical activity as well as relaxation throughout the day. Create a plan with your physician that will ensure you maintain and improve your health in the right way.
It is always helpful to have social support, whether you’re seeking motivation to return to the gym or you’re suffering from a painful medical condition. Make sure you involve those close to you in your journey to physical and mental health and well-being.
DR. DIDIER DEMESMIN, MD
With double board certification in pain medicine and anesthesiology, Dr. Didier Demesmin is a leader and pioneer in the field of modern medicine. His passion for offering his patients the best treatment options available led him to achieve a spot at the forefront of clinical and scientific research. Dr. Demesmin is also very involved in the industry of medical devices and is affiliated with many projects aimed at progressing the science of medicine. “Science is evolving quickly, so I do my best to stay involved in and informed on the latest advancements in medicine so that I am able to offer my patients the most efficient treatment options possible,” he says. “Every patient is unique and needs a unique approach to their care. Having knowledge of and access to the newest and most efficient technology and treatment options, I am able to consult the patient and help choose a treatment plan that they feel most comfortable with so that they can get back to doing what they love faster and pain free.” University Pain Medicine Center (UPMC) is a comprehensive medical practice specializing in interventional and minimally invasive pain management. Comprehensive care means that when he’s taking care of his patients, Dr. Demesmin uses a “complete” approach, integrating all parts of well-being and health (physical, emotional, mental, and social) into the treatment plan. “At UPMC, our mission is to provide patients with the safest and most advanced treatment options,” Dr. Demesmin continues. “Our goal is to have the patient informed and educated prior to treatment, comfortable during treatment, and functional (and happy!) after treatment. We don’t rely solely on medication, and instead offer the safest and most effective long-term solution treatment options.”

LOVE IN THE CITY THE BAD: But what happens when you can’t agree? He’s gone and fixated on some rugged, old-school gym while you would prefer something that doesn’t look (or smell) like the basement of a decaying crack house. He’s all “theme music from Rocky” in his head while you have a panic attack trying to remember if your vaccinations are up to date. THE UGLY: Somehow you find a compromise that works. Unfortunately, six weeks later you have a massive fight and break up. Thanks to the super deal you negotiated – that came with a contract more binding than a prenup – you are now tied to your ex like a resistance band that won’t ever, ever break. #KillMeNow
HIRING A PERSONAL TRAINER
Getting Fit Together
The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly By Jarrod Thalheimer
Should couples hit the gym together? In a word, no. Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for fitness and getting out to do things together. But bed buddies as gym buddies? Eh, not so much. I get that it might seem like a no-brainer. You already share so much. What could possibly go wrong by “battling your bulge” as a team? Actually, more than you think.
PICKING A GYM THE GOOD: Hey, it’s always fun trying out new gyms. Who doesn’t love the flirty back-and-forth that comes with scoping out a new fitness locale? “Oh, look! They have covered bicycle parking.” “But this one offers a Socratic, trilingual day care.” It’s a full-on party as you’re toured through luxe facilities full of shiny equipment and endless samples of whatever fair-trade, organic, gluten-free juice is on tap. And don’t forget, couples usually score a better deal than a mere single.
THE GOOD: Having a trainer can simplify even the most complicated fitness goals – and training as a pair means you will pay even less per person to do so. That’s great! Hiring a professional to guide you through the world of fitness puts you both on the fast track to success. THE BAD: What happens when the arguments over whom to hire suddenly turn personal? What if you’re pushing for the trainer with the best resume while he’s more focused on the one wearing painted-on yoga pants? Someone is going to say the wrong thing… guaranteed. THE UGLY: And yet, bad as that may be, it’s nothing compared to the hell a guy enters after realizing that he is flexing his own insect-sized biceps under the watchful eye of some superhero-bodied Joe Manganiello look-alike more focused on sliding his hands (or self) up and down your partner in pursuit of “proper form.”
ACTUALLY WORKING OUT TOGETHER THE GOOD: Having a partner makes hitting the gym way easier. It’s nice to have someone help with the motivation part of working out, and if they happen to already live with you, all the better. Plus, you have a spotter and at least another set of eyes to decipher how to use that bizarre-looking device in the corner with all the levers and an upside-down seat. What the heck is that thing? THE BAD: Sadly, the reality of mixing your “motivator” with your home life means you either become the annoying one always harping about getting to the gym or the hassled one who begins to fantasize about smothering the annoying one with a pillow if the words “spin” and “class” are mentioned one more time.

“What if you’re pushing for the trainer with the best resume while he’s more focused on the one wearing painted-on yoga pants? Someone is going to say the wrong thing… guaranteed.” THE UGLY: Worse? Hell, yes. Remember that weird face he makes when you … er… get together? Well, it seems that honey-bun busts out that same freaky look whenever he lifts anything over 30 pounds. That means what you have learned to close your eyes to now plays on a loop in front of you. And for multiple – interminable – reps and circuits. Lucky, lucky you.
PLAYING A SPORT TOGETHER THE GOOD: Joining a team is a great idea. You get tons of exercise and have fun doing it together. Plus you get to meet new people. Playing sports is a genuinely great way for couples to bond, as the spirit of competition mixed with group camaraderie can’t help but bring out the best in people… THE BAD: …until you eventually realize how much it bothers you that your sweetheart dribbles the basketball with two hands, staring straight down. Or that he throws a baseball like it’s a Frisbee. Or that she swings a tennis racquet like a fly swatter. Respect can be a fragile commodity on the sports field. THE UGLY: But what happens if the opposite is true? What if she’s actually really good? So good, in fact, that her talent also
includes a temper to rival Serena Williams’ when things go wrong. One missed shot leads to an expletive-laden, chair-throwing rampage that pretty much guarantees awkward stares or hostile silence during the first (and last) post-game beer hoist.
DOING CROSSFIT TOGETHER THE GOOD: As a strength and conditioning program that mixes intense aerobic exercise, body-weight strength movements, and Olympic-style weightlifting, what’s not to love? It seems to hit all the areas of concern while allowing couples to plan workout routines that complement their individual skills and shared abilities… THE BAD: …until you take it too far and end up looking like those plastic, over-buffed Barbie and Hulk-like Ken sets that seem to dominate the televised coverage of the sport. Could anything be worse than planning your entire life around CrossFit competitions, spray tans, and endless selfies? THE UGLY: That you both truly believe you actually succeeded in becoming plastic, over-buffed Barbie and Hulk-like Ken CrossFitters when you so very clearly did not. Failure can always be survived, but clueless delusion lasts a lifetime.

What Does Your DVR Say About You? By Jarrod Thalheimer
When it comes to doing impromptu detective work, nothing beats snooping through someone’s medicine cabinet. Checking out the various pills, creams, and whatnot usually offers a solid snapshot of what’s up. Unfortunately, it also leaves out a lot. But a DVR sure doesn’t. Digital video recorders are the Catholic confessionals of a person’s actual cultural locale. You might successfully mask your inner thoughts and feelings in public, or even censor what you post on Facebook, but that innocent little set-top box knows all. It hums away, storing and organizing all your dirty little secrets. Have an obsession with clueless models “competing” for fame? Your DVR knows it. Lie to friends about Keeping Up with the Kardashians? Can’t fool your DVR. That box could bury you. Don’t believe me? Here are some examples.
DVR CONTENTS: Batman: The Animated Series, Johnny Test, SpongeBob SquarePants, Curious George JUDGMENT: Unless this unit is being shared by someone under the age of 8, we may have a very real problem here. Sure, it could signify a harmless “Peter Pan” mentality (never wants to grow up) or just someone who likes their entertainment simple, uncomplicated, and in primary colors. Or they might be a kidnapper. Look around for locked rooms without windows, and pre-dial 911 just in case.
DVR CONTENTS: The Soup (reruns), Tosh.0, Crazy Talk, Fashion Police
DVR CONTENTS: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
JUDGMENT: This is clearly a complicated person. On the one hand, they can’t bring themselves to actually watch the sort of horrific television the shows listed routinely make fun of. However, they also can’t stop finding out about such shows and rubbing their hands with glee as snarky hosts make painful sport of those on them. Smarter than average (and probably smug about it), these folks don’t like to admit their own hypocrisy as they snort and guffaw at the televised mockery of others. They may have issues recognizing their own shortcomings.
JUDGMENT: There are two kinds of people: those who care enough about the news to follow it on their own, and those who want others to think they care enough about the news to follow it but generally don’t bother. This DVR obviously showcases the latter. Too bored or uninterested to discern any meaning from objective news reports, these folks are more than happy to let well-trained comedians dice up select current events into funny, bite-sized chunks of irony that somehow render the viewer smarter than those actually making the news in the first place.
printed about movie stars and the world they inhabit. Still seeing red carpets as places of honor and accomplishment, these precious gems go to sleep at night wishing they too could someday live the glamorous existence of the stars they idolize. Sadly, unless you are similarly deluded (or perpetually stoned), you may find it difficult to remain friends with this simpleton.
DVR CONTENTS: The Steve Wilkos Show, The Meredith Vieira Show, Dr. Phil, The Dr. Oz Show, Moonstruck, Frasier, Rhoda JUDGMENT: Second banana syndrome is the order of the day here. The contents of this box show that the owner identifies first with the runners-up – those hardy folks who patiently wait for their turn to shine. Don’t be fooled though. These people might seem like they’re content to be in the background, whether it’s bouncing for Jerry Springer or putting up with Sonny Bono, but don’t think for one second their eyes are not locked directly on the prize. Caution: don’t do karaoke together.
DVR CONTENTS: The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, iZombie, Z Nation JUDGMENT: It would appear this individual is either researching a novel they plan to write or they are weirdly fixated on the dead rising. While this may be little more than a monochromatic taste in escapism, it could also be a clue to why he bit your neck so hard the other night. Unless he gets annoyed with you for having to explain the importance of a secondary “head shot” (should he happen to die in your presence), the only thing he’s infected with is fan-boyitis.
DVR CONTENTS: Border Security: Canada’s Front Line, Border Security: Australia’s Front Line, Dog Squad, Homeland Security USA, Cops, Airport 24/7: Miami, Airplane Repo
DVR CONTENTS: MASH, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, Taxi, Gilligan’s Island, Hogan’s Heroes, CHiPs, Emergency! JUDGMENT: Stuck in a time warp somewhere between the late 1950s and 1970s, this person has clearly had enough of modern television and wants to revert back to the “good old days” of a less PC view of things (e.g., no car seats for kids, doctors who smoke, etc.). In and of itself this is not a significant problem, unless conversation turns to more modern topics such as what past TV stars like Bruce Jenner, Robert Blake, or Bill Cosby are currently up to. Tread carefully.
DVR CONTENTS: Dancing with the Stars, Entertainment Tonight, The Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, Barbara Walters specials JUDGMENT: Sweet, happy, and hopelessly naïve, this person believes most anything
JUDGMENT: While curiosity is natural, delving into this level of detail on borders, law enforcement, and airport-related issues may suggest something larger at play. Trust your gut: if their apartment is as sparsely furnished as their list of friends and they have passports in all colors of the rainbow, it might be best to notify the authorities. Remember: If you see something, say something.
DVR CONTENTS: Downton Abbey, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Selfridge, Broadchurch, Father Brown, Midsomer Murders JUDGMENT: A perfect case of Anglophilia or “love of all things English,” the owner of this DVR is enthralled by the proper speech, mannered air, and storied British television tradition of placing unlovely actors in starring roles. It is important to note that anything said by anyone with an English accent will immediately be accorded more respect and reverence by this person. So if you don’t already have an accent, get to work. BELLANYC.COM 129

A Passionate Voice for the Voiceless By Dr. Robi Ludwig
You probably recognize Jane Velez-Mitchell from her work as a veteran TV journalist, New York Times best-selling author, and award-winning activist. I was lucky enough to work with her when she hosted her show, “Jane VelezMitchell” (formerly “Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell”), for six years at HLN. Together we enjoyed analyzing the various psychological dynamics of high-profile legal cases that found their way onto the cultural TV landscape.
Now it’s my turn to interview Velez-Mitchell instead of her interviewing me. Over lunch at one of her favorite Upper West Side vegan restaurants, Peacefood Cafe, we talked about one of her most passionate career adventures to date – addressing animal rights via her new website, JaneUnChained.com. “When my show came to an end, one of my biggest concerns was that I wouldn’t be able to have my weekly animal segments anymore,” she said. Over the years, Velez-Mitchell’s journalistic eye saw that important issues concerning animal rights and activism were not being addressed enough (or even at all) in the news. So when her job at HLN came to an end, she decided to turn her award-winning skills and direct them, along with her partner in life and work, Donna Dennison, toward becoming a media powerhouse for animal rights. Velez-Mitchell’s love for and commitment to animals could make even the most apathetic observer enthusiastic about social action. Here, she shares why she feels so committed to this cause, and why she believes everyone else should, too.

Some people may be surprised to learn that you weren’t always a vegan. What helped you make that shift? I was lucky to grow up in a mostly pescatarian household. We avoided meat. Unfortunately, we did eat fish, eggs, and dairy. When I became a journalist, I saw the horrors of industrialized farming in videos like “Meet your Meat,” “Farm to Fridge,” and “Earthlings,” which I urge everyone to watch. I moved gradually toward a totally plant-based lifestyle. The turning point was interviewing fourth-generation-cattlerancher-turned-vegan-activist Howard Lyman, author of “Mad Cowboy.” He told me how calves are ripped from their mothers at birth so humans can steal their milk. The veal industry, where calves are kept in crates to keep their flesh soft, is a direct by-product of the dairy industry. I realized dairy was “liquid meat,” and I’ve been vegan ever since, about 19 years now. I am healthy and full of energy – living proof that meat eating is unnecessary. You mentioned that the mainstream media overlooks protests addressing the cruelty against animals, which are often happening all around us. Why? Follow the money. Mainstream media relies on ad revenue, which comes in large part from meat/dairy/fast food companies, which don’t want the public to see what’s going on in factory farms, where pigs are kept in crates the size of their bodies, never able to turn around. This is why mainstream media ignores the destructive nature of meat production, which is a leading cause of climate change, obesity, heart disease, and other illnesses. Also, we could end world hunger today by taking the food we feed billions of farm animals and giving it to starving children. Meat is the most inefficient food source. As a society, do you think we’re becoming more aware of animal cruelty? The outcry over Cecil the lion and “Blackfish” [the documentary that exposed SeaWorld] would probably not have happened a decade ago. Animal rights is approaching the tipping point and will become the defining social justice movement of the 21st century. You’ve been in the news business for a long time. What inspired you to create JaneUnChained.com and use social media as a platform to get your message out? When my national TV show wrapped, I decided to videotape some animal rights protests. I noticed that, even when many demonstrators showed up, these events were ignored by mainstream media. So I launched JaneUnChained.com, a multiplatform news outlet producing original videos to speak for voiceless animals. JaneUnChained’s videos are widely shared through Facebook and other platforms.
“I am healthy and full of energy – living proof that meat eating is unnecessary.” You’ve quoted people who have compared animal cruelty to slavery and the Holocaust. Can you tell us more about this idea? Brilliant activists like Farm Animal Rights Movement founder Alex Hershaft, a Holocaust survivor himself, lectures widely about the parallels. Animal activist Robbyne Kaamil, a descendent of slaves, also draws comparisons between human and animal exploitation. The compassion movement seeks to defend all sentient beings against cruelty and exploitation. After viewing and/or signing up for JaneUnChained, what are you hoping the takeaway will be for fans and new viewers alike? We all want peace. Non-violence begins with you… now. How can those who don’t know much about animal cruelty learn more? Read Peter Singer’s “Animal Liberation.” What does being an activist mean to you? It means going into my discomfort zone to expose the truth. What are some advantages of becoming vegan? It’s the most joyous, delicious, and healthful adventure. “The China Study” is one of many books that show it’s the healthiest diet. What has creating JaneUnChained helped you learn and understand? It’s shown me that each of us can create positive change using the skills and imagination we possess. What’s your ultimate goal for the site? To push others toward greater compassion so our species can evolve. It’s going to happen – the only question is how soon. B
A NOVEL IDEA
“Barbie The Icon”
Massimiliano Capella (Glitterati)
Can a toy be influential? It sure can, especially if we’re talking about a doll named Barbie. The Mattel® creation made her glamorous entrance into the toy universe in 1959 and hasn’t looked back since. Today, a Barbie is sold every three seconds somewhere throughout the world. One of the best things about Barbie is that she doesn’t simply rock an evening gown, she can rock a profession as well. She’s had over 150 careers, from business exec to doctor to astronaut. Fun fact: According to a post on the Barbie Facebook page, Dentist Barbie debuted in 1997, when only 14 percent of dentists were female. Nearly 20 years later, women make up 27 percent of the dentist population. Coincidence, or girl power? Only Barbie knows …
“In Other Words”
Jhumpa Lahiri Translator: Ann Goldstein (Knopf)
When one thinks of literary influence, Jhumpa Lahiri’s name is bound to come up. Lahiri won a Pulitzer for “Interpreter of Maladies,” a stunner of a short story collection, which also happened to be her debut book. In her new memoir, Lahiri writes of her passion for Italian language and culture, which resulted in moving her family to Rome so she could fully indulge in that passion. It’s one thing for a writer to find her voice, but Lahiri managed to find her voice in two languages – she wrote this book entirely in Italian, and it is presented in a duallanguage format, thanks to Goldstein’s translation. Brava.
Influential Words, Influential People By Barbara Bellesi
Words are powerful. Choose them carefully and you can woo someone or hurl an insult. In fact, fewer things are more powerful than the written word. Books give us the opportunity to read the thoughts, opinions, and creations of many different writers, from memoirists and essayists to novelists and biographers. In this, our Influencer Issue, BELLA recommends authors who can wield the superpowers of words for good. 132 BELLANYC.COM
“American Rhapsody: Writers, Musicians, Movie Stars, and One Great Building” Claudia Roth Pierpont (Farrar, Straus and Giroux)
New York is like no other city. Its culture, history, and inhabitants are one of a kind. This book, which is part biography, part criticism, is a tribute to 20th century visionaries and their contributions to making New York a city to which all others are compared. From Edith Wharton to George Gershwin to Dashiell Hammett – and not to mention that most iconic of skyscrapers, the Chrysler Building – Claudia Roth Pierpont’s book belongs on the shelf of anyone who loves New York.
“The Geography of Genius: A Search for the World’s Most Creative Places from Ancient Athens to Silicon Valley” Eric Weiner (Simon & Schuster)
Is creativity connected to location? Eric Weiner certainly seems to think so. The New York Times bestselling author of “The Geography of Bliss” traveled throughout the world to the familiar haunts of influencers like Socrates, da Vinci, and Freud to pose the question, “What was in the air, and can we bottle it?” From ancient Greece to the Italian Renaissance and from the Song Dynasty to Silicon Valley, Weiner examines the theory that creativity and invention could very well be the result of being in the right place at the right time.
DON’T WAIT TO START LIVING YOUR LIFE
“Your Best Age Is Now"
Robi Ludwig, Psy.D. (HarperOne)
If anyone believes that age is just a number, it’s Robi Ludwig, Psy.D. “I love [the] idea of being able to look at your life from a spiritual perspective, which maintains a level of hope that then allows you to reject ideas, get in touch with your inner moxie, and continue to reinvent yourself based on how you’re changing, how you’re evolving,” Ludwig explains.
Age is just a number, and “middle-aged” is just a phrase. Renowned psychotherapist and writer Robi Ludwig instead wants women to get over the semantics and get on with living their lives. Thanks to modern science, women are living longer, so middle age has all but faded into mythology. Ludwig advises us to forget keeping score with the years and start living our lives. Whether it’s having a family, a career, or hotter sex, Ludwig believes that whatever it is you want is within reach – and this book will help you get it.
Ludwig is not a fan of the term “middle age,” and that’s putting it mildly. “Reject this cultural notion that midlife is about loss and about being insignificant. Throw that in the garbage. It’s rubbish, and we need to know it’s rubbish,” Ludwig says. “Once you embrace your passion and what you’re meant to do, and you have the right perspective, the future can be as bright if not brighter than your past.”

Stephen King has been thrilling millions of readers for decades, writing books that keep them up at night – some out of fear, some just to find out what happens next. His latest literary feat is a crime fiction trilogy, starting with “Mr. Mercedes,” which focuses on a hard-boiled detective named Bill Hodges. The final book of the trilogy isn’t due out until next year, but King fans have something with which to bide their time – David E. Luxe bungalows and private villas overlook two championship golf courses with ocean views from every hole (popular with celebs for their charity tournaments), while nongolfers can relax in the Spa Acqua Colonnade before a California Sugar Glow or Marine Wrapsody treatment.
A resort of this caliber doesn’t like to name names, but a wealth of professional sports figures, Hollywood’ers looking for a mini-escape (such as Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Anna Faris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Kate Beckinsale), and other names-to-know have enjoyed the excellent service and culinary delights. Mountain Lodges of Peru A Machu Picchu Journey By Dara Kaplan
Machu Picchu is the prized gem at the end of the Lares Adventure created by Mountain Lodges of Peru, and for good reason. However, the off-the-beaten path visits along the way are what will truly steal your heart and make this trip through the Sacred Valley an experience of a lifetime. 140 BELLANYC.COM
"Experiences that you can expect include touring the Sacred Valley, exploring the archaeological complex Pisaq, and enjoying exclusive access to the isolated community of Viacha."
A perfect combination of luxury accommodations, cultural immersion, and exciting quests, the Lares Adventure is ideal for the traveler who loves in-depth cultural exploration with optional hiking, yet still wants to be pampered. The “soft adventurer” will love both the five- and seven-day adventures, which combine spectacular treks through awe-inspiring landscapes, with a peek into the lives of people of remote Andean villages that you would otherwise never have the opportunity to visit. Not only is this customized travel at its finest, but it’s also a deep dive into conservation tourism. The cultural alternatives to the daily light treks are the heart and soul of this expedition company. The natural treasures of Peru are an excellent backdrop to an unparalleled look into lives and traditions unchanged for centuries. Endless companies tour through the Sacred Valley, but Mountain Lodges of Peru has developed and built sustainable lodges serviced by the locals in these remote villages. Employing the local native community also works to support the local economy. At the lodges, villagers simultaneously share their customs and learn how to be hospitality professionals, giving them an opportunity for growth. I began my journey in Cusco with a night at a five-star accommodation just blocks from the main plaza, across from the Temple of the Sun at Palacio del Inka, capital of the Inca Empire and gateway to Machu Picchu. The first night in Cusco is a must to get yourself acclimated to the 11,200 foot altitude. Trust me, do not take this lightly when you’re coming from New York City’s sea-level location. Experiences that you can expect include touring the Sacred Valley, exploring the archaeological complex Pisaq, and enjoying exclusive access to the isolated community of Viacha, where you can try ancient artisanal potato farming practices and enjoy a traditional pachamanca meal, cooked under hot stones deep within the earth. You can also explore the heart
of the Lares Valley with a look at the unfrequented archeological site of Ancasmarca. Travelers can choose between visiting the traditional weavers’ village of Choquecancha and hiking to cerulean blue lagoons and monumental peaks en route to the remote village of Huacahuasi. The ancient town of Ollantaytambo, the oldest living city in Latin America, can be added to the itinerary before the jewel of the trip, Machu Picchu. Enjoy verdant vistas on the breathtakingly scenic train ride along the famous Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes, before ascending the mountain to take in the beauty and magic of Machu Picchu. In short, the Lares Adventure to Machu Picchu defines the adage that the journey is the destination.
An Intimate Caribbean Escape
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, an escape to the island of Anguilla is the perfect way to disconnect from the outside world and recharge in a place known for its beautiful beaches (33 to be exact) and tranquility. With only about 30 miles of island, you won’t find this hidden gem overrun with tourists and crowds. Throw a little romance into the mix, and your relaxing island getaway just got a little hotter.

Spyglass Hill Villa
Perched atop the ridge at North Hill overlooking Road Bay harbor, this luxurious gated villa boasts stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, along with beautiful nightly sunsets visible from the large outdoor pool deck. The secluded, 7,000-squarefoot villa features an open-air courtyard, indoor-outdoor living spaces, four spacious bedrooms, an entertainment suite, and even a fitness room – all the comforts you could dream of without having to venture off the premises. Spyglass Hill is pure elegance and anonymity if you’re looking to soak up all this peaceful island has to offer, in the privacy of your own paradise. SpyGlassHillAnguilla.com
This five-star Mediterranean resort is set along Maundays Bay, a beautiful white beach with magnificent views of the crystal clear, turquoise waters. With rooms just steps from the beach, we experienced another side of vacation life in Anguilla. Our beachfront junior suite had all the amenities we could imagine. Breakfast on our private terrace was the perfect way to start the day. With three restaurants on the premises, our favorite culinary experience by far was a private dinner on the beach arranged by the resort’s staff. From the ambiance to the food, prepared by the excellent culinary team at Pimms restaurant, the five-course tasting dinner was unforgettable. CapJuluca.com
Garvey’s SunShine Shack
At this popular beach bar on Rendezvous Bay (one of Anguilla’s most magnificent beaches), we spent the day with our toes in the sand, island cocktails in hand, and fresh BBQ straight from the grill – all prepared by Garvey himself. With its laid-back vibe, this hot spot is popular with both visitors and locals looking for good music, good food, and an afternoon or evening of authentic island fun. Twitter.com/ SunShineShack
CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa
For visitors seeking a short break from the outdoors, the CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa, also located on Rendezvous Bay, boasts on-site cooking classes. Using locally grown herbs and vegetables straight from the property’s hydroponic farm, we assisted executive chef Jasper Schneider with the prep for a variety of dishes. Afterward, we dined outside on the terrace and enjoyed our culinary creations. Pastry, Japanese, Pizza and Cookies, and Restaurant Food Made Easy are the classes offered four times a week; an Italian class is currently in the works. Even if you’re not a guest at the resort, you can still take advantage of the classes by contacting the cuisine concierge. CuisinArtResort.com
This small cay off Sandy Ground beach is a popular off-island getaway – an experience not to be missed when vacationing in Anguilla. Not only will you feel like you’ve been transported to a whole other island, you’ll also enjoy a true tropical afternoon getaway. Because the island is accessible only by boat, the daily sea shuttle (appropriately named “Happiness”) dropped us off for a day of relaxation. Lounging oceanside on a daybed, we sipped piña coladas and dined on some of the best seafood the Caribbean island has to offer. MySandyIsland.com BELLANYC.COM 143

There’s a reason Providence continues to be lauded as the best restaurant in LA–it’s just divine and one of the most delectable dining experiences you will ever enjoy. Chef Michael Cimarusti is the creative mastermind behind the modern American seafood restaurant, which has two highly coveted Michelin stars and multiple James Beard Award nominations. Choose one of the tasting menus that will delightfully take you on a gastronomical journey; your taste buds will forever be changed from the high fine dining bar, which Chef Michael sets. From the Wild King Salmon to the Maine Lobster to the Liberty Farms Duck – every dish will be like nothing you’ve eaten before. But one of the standouts is the rich and juicy A5 Wagyu served with sunchoke, pancetta, and dates that will have you reminiscing about it days after you’ve dined at this standout establishment. Sublime! The décor at Providence is homey with comfortable seating and a non-fussy feel with barnacles scattered across the walls. But the contemporary execution, distinctive presentation, delicious cuisine, and attentive service are just a few reasons why Providence continues to receive the rich accolades it so deeply deserves and title of the number one restaurant in LA.
