Care and Support at Home – Dementia and Assistive Technology Technology is starting to play an important role in helping to support people living with dementia. Although not suitable for everyone it can help with day to day challenges and provide reassurance to family carers and relatives. Assistive technology can provide a degree of autonomy and independence helping with memory and recall and also help reduce some of the risks people living with dementia face at home. Assistive technology should however be personalised based on individual needs and following consultation with health and social care professionals. It is also important to understand that technology should be used to support and assist the individual and their carers not as a replacement for human interaction. I have described below two products which have benefited from research and testing carried out with people living with dementia. Rosebud Reminder Clock The Rosebud Reminder Dementia Clock has been developed to help prompt people with Dementia and Alzheimer’s to do daily tasks and is aimed at relieving the stress and anxiety that can build up when unknown events occur. It has a large display which shows the time and date in 4 different formats as well as 17 inbuilt reminders with a maximum of 24 alarms that can be over a 24 hour period. What I really like about the Rosebud cloak is that it can be customised by adding sounds, pictures or even videos. This means that instead of having a reminder with an inbuilt “voice” one can record the same with a familiar voice; that of a son, daughter or spouse. The Rosebud has been developed in conjunction with healthcare professionals with a vast range of experience and knowledge in Elderly care as well as direct feedback from those living with and carers of people with dementia, even down to the selection and length of the alarm chimes which are specifically designed to offer ease of understanding. Droplet Intelligent Hydration System The Droplet Intelligent Hydration System reduces the risk of dehydration by encouraging people to drink, which in turn significantly reduces the risk of related infections and illnesses. The Electronic Smart Base monitors the frequency of drinking and plays friendly pre-set or personalised voice messages with reminder lights, helping maintain healthy hydration levels. The Droplet Tumbler looks like a traditional glass but is lightweight and easy to hold. Alternatively, the Droplet Mug is designed for anyone with vision or dexterity problems. The Droplet Flow Control Lid helps prevent spills and provides dignified support by controlling the flow of liquid for people who have tremors or trouble swallowing. Note: Both products are eligible for VAT relief as they fall under the definition of equipment “designed solely for people with disability, chronic or terminal illness”. Nottinghamshire Writer Self-Publishes Debut Novel Nottingham born writer, Richard Kish, has launched his debut novel, ‘The Burning Ash’. The fantasy novel tells the story of a young man, Hideki, who though born in the afterlife manages to escape to the fantastical Kingdom of Ryushima. There he meets Princess Rosalina and is thrown into an adventure of love, friendship and sacrifice where a world of magic, dragons, and a crystalline tree await. Richard Kish from Toton, decided to rewrite the novel from scratch following his graduation from the University of Cambridge and has been editing and tweaking it while working in theatre marketing and communications in local government. After trying to get the book published through traditional methods, Richard decided to self-publish the novel himself using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.

“‘The Burning Ash’ for me encapsulates everything I’ve experienced over the past 11 years, both the highs and the lows, and all my hopes for the future. It’s all about bringing some fun and optimism to a world that at times can feel inexplicably bleak. It’s also my love letter to the video games, films, and fantastical stories that have made me who I am today.” “I hope my book can be a light in the darkness for readers and take people on a fun ride of escapism. If it can make just one person happy, it’ll have done its job.” ‘The Burning Ash’ is available to buy now on http://bit.ly/TheBurningAsh as both paperback and e-book. Find out more about Richard, his writing and his future projects at www.richardkish.co.uk.

Richard said: “It’s always been my dream to get my first novel published by the time I was 25. I started writing ‘The Burning Ash’ when I was 14 and it’s been through many versions and changes since then and I can’t wait to let the characters I’ve journeyed with for over a decade out into the world. Rather than waiting for someone else to take a chance on me in an industry that often focuses on what's selling now rather than something that could develop its own niche, it felt right to make my dreams come true myself.”

Garden Jobs For May Move and divide naturalized spring bulbs that have formed into clumps. Dividing them now means that next year you will have better spacing in the garden, and with multiplying, more flowers. The month of May is ideal for pruning evergreens. It's also time to plant Peas, Carrots, Beets, Spinach, Cauliflower, Cabbage, etc. Protect with fleece if a frost is forecasted.

It’s time to plant out tubers – Dahlias, Begonias, Cana’s etc. Once they have been planted, give them some water to boost them into action. Why not treat someone to a bag of the above tuber’s; they make a lovely gift for someone who enjoys gardening! Save any moss after the lawn has been scarified, as this can be used to line the inside of hanging baskets, it makes the planting much easier. It’s recommended that a plastic liner should be placed inside, on top of the moss.

If you have received summer plug plants in the post, they can sometimes appear “leggy”, nothing to worry about, they will grow as soon as you place them in the garden. To help them along you can pinch them out. With finger and thumb, just pinch off the growing tip above a lower node, about half way up the stem. Dead head all Spring bedding in the garden, this will increase the flowering time and add to the energy the plant needs to grow new flowers. Get on top of weeding, you can pull them up by hand, or for a large section it would be easier to hoe them and then rake them off. Don’t put the weeds on your compost heap, as the seeds will grow again . Planting up hanging baskets early gives them time to become more established for when you place then outside. GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE BILLY OCEAN! Billy Ocean announces Summer outdoor show at Birmingham’s Digbeth Arena taking place on Friday 5th July 2019! Billy Ocean is the biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced, one who has sold over 30 million records in his lifetime to date. He has collected a pile of Gold and Platinum records across the world and hit the number one spot worldwide in the pop charts including the USA, Australia, Germany, Holland, and the UK. Billy has achieved extraordinary success as both an artist and a songwriter. Born in Trinidad, Billy settled in London’s East End when just seven years old. The calypso crazy kid soon got turned onto soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, as well as pop groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, leading him to spend much of his study time in the music room. Billy got his first break when he signed to GTO records, for whom his second single was the Motown-ish ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts and No. 12 in the US.Two top twenty singles followed; ‘Love on Delivery’ and ‘Stop Me’, then ‘Red Light Spells Danger’ became a smash in both the UK and the US. Billy changed record labels and his move to Jive Records provided instant success, with the million selling American number one single ‘Caribbean Queen’ (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal), followed by ‘Loverboy’, and ‘Suddenly’, which became the first of Billy’s killer ballads. The Album from which these singles came from spent a year in the US Charts selling double platinum (triple in Canada). Billy also performed on the American half of Live Aid, making 1985 a truly incredible year for him.1986 wasn’t bad either, opening with ‘When the Going gets Tough (the tough gets going)’, the theme song to the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner/Danny Devito

In the US, there was a No. 1 single with ‘There’ll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)’. More Hits were to follow with the now classic ‘Get Outta My Dreams; Get Into My Car’, giving Billy yet another US No. 1hit. Billy proved himself to be one of the most hardworking artists on the live stage, touring the world to ever-growing enthusiastic audiences After huge worldwide successes and years of touring, Billy decided to take a break to spend some well-earned time at home with his family. In 2007, Billy decided to get back out to perform his hits again, this time with his daughter Cherie on backing vocals, with live dates in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and the Caribbean. The tour was a great success and culminated in his getting the bug once more for writing and recording. 2008 saw Billy back in the studio for the first time in 15 years, recording his new album ‘Because I Love You’-which was released in 2009. In 2010, Billy went back on the road again with his band in the UK, Europe and the US with the release of ‘The Very Best of Billy Ocean’, which entered the UK album charts at number 17 and sold 72,000 copies in 4 weeks. In 2012,he went back into the studio with his old buddy Barry Eastmond to record tracks that became the album “Here You Are” which was released in 2016 entering the charts at No 4, his highest chart position since 1988. 2017 saw the “Here You Are” album released in the USA. The year was another fantastic one for him; playing shows in Dubai, USA, Canada, Spain, Mozambique, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Germany and even Luxembourg. ‘Here You Are – The Best Of ’ Greatest Hits album is out now. 1a Devonshire Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 1BS Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm Saturday 9am to 5pm

Established in Beeston, Nottingham over 70 years ago, John Flynn Opticians is located on the corner of the leafy Devonshire Avenue and Chilwell High Road (opposite corner to Ellis-Fermor & Negus Solicitors). Director and senior Optometrist at John Flynn Opticians, Dr Sheeraz Janjua is one of only 25 Optometrists in the UK to be awarded the degree of Doctor of Optometry from Aston University for his research in Dry Eye Syndrome. He was also one of a select few nominated for the Optometrist of the Year award in 2018. Having been at the helm in Beeston since 2016, Dr. Janjua provides both private and NHS patients with the option to benefit from an enhanced eye examination using an OCT instrument to produce macular, retinal and optic nerve scans to aid early diagnosis of various ocular conditions.

With over 45 years of experience between us we have 2 goals: Provide a friendly, welcoming, homely environment with a passion for great customer service and to combine the best ophthalmic lenses from some of the most respected lens manufacturer’s alongside some of the finest hand-made frames from around the world.

We believe that the best spectacle frames are made by companies who just make spectacle frames. Sounds obvious?

Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our patients are saying about us:

We also dispense specialist lenses for people with vision loss related to Glaucoma, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration (AMD). These special lenses change the direction of light to alternative healthier parts of the retina. Combined with a special filter to improve contrast they have been a huge success with our patients.

“I’d heard that the glasses were great quality and the service was great at John Flynn Optician. The staff have been very helpful and gave me all the facts I needed. I love the personal touch and that you don’t have to ask for help - it’s just given. I love my new glasses - the style, the colour, the quality - everything. Dan and Annette have been brilliant from the minute I walked in the door. They are very friendly and provided perfect service in every way. I will be coming back and will share my experience with others.”

The glasses are well made, well fitted and I can see much better. My eye examination with Dr. Janjua was very informative and he put me at ease - very good. Most ‘designer’ spectacle brands originate from popular fashion brands lending their name to a range of mass-produced frames, usually made in China from cheap materials. We stock handmade frames made by expert manufacturers, largely in France, Italy and Japan. The quality of these frames speaks for themselves. We also have a range of beautiful frames at a lower price point, so you can have a pair for every outfit!

Draycott in Bloom – Painting and Planting!

W

ith the theme for this year’s entry being the ‘canal’, and in particular canal artwork, we, the ‘Dibbers’, wasted no time in researching exactly what was needed to create the beautiful artwork that adorns canal boats so we could attempt to replicate the designs on planters and structures throughout the village. However, we quickly realised this was something we needed expert advice on, so a search started for someone who could help us. mazingly the daughter of one local resident is Marianne Shillingford the Creative Director for Dulux Paints based in London. At the beginning of Marianne’s artistic career she studied canal boat artwork, and much to our delight was only too happy to offer us some advice. Even though based and living in London, Marianne made time in what is an incredibly busy schedule, to run a small workshop for a few of us to give some basic tuition and advice. It was an amazing afternoon! She was able to advise on the best type of paint to use and brought with her a collection of recycled Dulux paints from the Community Repaint Initiative which offers usable left-over paints to Community Groups who use them to add a bit more colour to the world! Reusing and recycling is close to the ‘Dibbers’ hearts and so it was a perfect solution. She also gave us tips and advice about techniques and brushes to use. We would have been totally lost without her help!

A

42

Being able to draw on the knowledge of someone like Marianne was absolutely invaluable to us as a group, and her easygoing tuition gave us some much-needed confidence in what was completely unknown territory for many of us. By the end of the session though we all felt we understood the basics. With further practice we hoped we stood a chance of creating some eye-catching displays, that, whilst not up to the standard of Marianne’s work, would nevertheless be testimony to her help and our enthusiasm. I think you can see from our faces - we were hooked! We have been sharing our newly acquired knowledge with other ‘Dibbers’ and villagers by running our own workshops and practice sessions and it’s been great fun and rewarding to see how much we have progressed. So during the summer, when walking around Draycott, perhaps during the Open Gardens Weekend of 29/30 June, or The Scarecrow Festival over the August Bank Holiday, we hope the displays will give you as much pleasure as we’ve had

creating them! See our advert on opposite page!

Bramcote Neighbourhood Forum Numbers alone should not matter – but they do! Recent developments have meant that the Forth Bridge no longer needs continuous painting. If only that were the case with Broxtowe Borough Council and its local plan.Back in pre-history, 2014 to be exact, Broxtowe, controlled by a Labour – Liberal Democrat coalition, adopted its Aligned Core Strategy – the master document against which planning applications for new homes, schools and so on would be managed. This set Broxtowe a target of 6150 new dwellings (I prefer to think of them as homes) to be built up to 2028. After the 2015 elections when control passed to the Conservatives, this figure and the entire Core Strategy was reviewed by legal counsel and found to be water tight. In 2016 Bramcote formed it’s Neighbourhood Forum. In 2018, Broxtowe published its draft Local Plan Part 2 – sitting beneath the Core Strategy and above the emerging Bramcote Neighbourhood Plan. Part 2 of the Local Plan should in theory be voted in by one of the first meetings of the new council after the May 2019 elections, and hopefully the Bramcote Neighbourhood Plan will go to a referendum later in the year too.You would think that that would be it for Local Plans for a while – but you would be wrong. In September 2019 the overarching Aligned Core Strategy is up for review, and with it that figure of 6150 new homes. The problem you see, is that neither Rome nor Broxtowe’s new homes are built in a day. These things take time

50

– and the sands of time are running. For Broxtowe to achieve the target it set itself it needs to deliver year on year a record number of new homes – a higher number of completions than were seen in the couple of years immediately before the great financial crisis of 2007-2008. Under delivery is a national problem that was considered by Sir Oliver Letwin’s Independent review of build out report last year. There is no reason to think that such unprecedented built out rates are going to be achieved in Broxtowe. The dangers of falling behind in the number of homes being built - missing out on a five-year supply – is that all those planning policies designed to protected precious green belt, wildlife site and green corridors are ‘out of date’ – effectively they become irrelevant. Clearly no one wants to be in such a situation, but what to do? In my opinion, the new council, whatever party political hue it ends up having, needs to move and move swiftly to revise downwards that target of 6150, to something like 5000. If more end up being built, that is fine. But at least the Council will be in control of where and of what type of homes Broxtowe will get. If you would like to find out more about the Bramcote Neighbourhood Forum and even join it if you live in Bramcote, please visit www.bramcoteneighbourhoodforum. org.uk. Support for young people If you’re worried about your boyfriend or partner’s behaviour, learning more about the warning signs of domestic violence could help you – or someone close to you – stay safe. You don’t have to deal with this on your own. Try and talk to someone you trust – perhaps a friend, teacher or parent. Or call the Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline, run in partnership between Refuge and Women’s Aid. Helpline workers are here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline: 0808 2000 247 Run in partnership between Women’s Aid and Refuge All calls are confidential. If you’ve been physically hurt, or feel like you are in immediate danger, call 999. The police have a duty to investigate and keep you safe. What about pets? -Many women and children are forced to stay with violent partners because they feel they can’t leave their pets behind. Research shows that there is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence: men who are violent to women may threaten to harm or kill a beloved pet in order to intimidate their partner. The Links Group is a multi-agency group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults. Members include leading associations and charitable organisations. As part of The Links Group, some charities offer pet fostering services specifically for pets belonging to women fleeing from domestic violence. For many women and children who leave violent relationships, the options open to them regarding their pets are very limited. The services listed below ensure that pets are cared for in a volunteer foster carer’s home until their owner is able to be reunited with them. All placements are strictly confidential. residential care can often face a range of disadvantages and the Local Care Offer seeks to level the playing field with their peers and give young people leaving care the encouragement and support they need to fulfil their potential.” Care leaver campaigner Terry Galloway has been instrumental in advising on the Local Offer and is well placed to offer advice having been in care himself throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Terry said: “I want to give the care leavers of today the benefit of my experience in care. When I left care, there was very little help available, I felt very much on my own and not prepared for life after care. “My mission now is to create a better pathway for children in care and care leavers so that they have the support they need, akin to the support we would give our own children. Nottinghamshire is the first upper tier local authority to introduce council tax exemption across every district. They are also the first local authority to create a joined up local offer for care leavers involving seven other local authorities. Terry added: “I put forward my ideas to create apprenticeships and jobs for care leavers at a business breakfast last month. Some of the county’s largest retailers and businesses attended and as a result pledged their support to look at apprenticeships, training and mentoring for care leavers.“I now want to take that work forward to create a national model. My ultimate goal is to create a guaranteed job opportunity for every care leaver, supported by job coaches and to get them ready for the world of work and beyond.”

Care leaver Keeley Terry, 20, has advised on several aspects for the Local Offer and is delighted that care leavers will benefit from the guidance and support it provides.Keeley, who was in care from 13 – 18 years old, now lives with her daughter Darcie-Ann in Eastwood and has recently joined the county council as a care leaver apprentice, currently working on a mental health project for adolescents. Keeley commented: “The Local Offer gives care leavers a sense of security, they know they are not on their own and help is only a phone call away. We don’t have the family network around us that most teenagers have, so it’s vital we access the support the councils are providing. “My advice to any care leaver is visit the Notts Help Yourself website and check what help and opportunities are available, the help I have received has given me tremendous confidence to move on to the next phase of my life.”

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL have launched a new fun and interactive website called Health for Kids, to help primary school children think about how they can stay healthy and be more aware of issues including exercise, sun protection, healthy eating, puberty and sleep. The website was developed with children to focus on the type of information, support and advice they would find most useful when thinking about health. Health for Kids has quizzes, games and engaging information aimed at children to help them learn about and understand a number of health issues.

It's that time of year when the days are longer and the sun has decided to shine across the county (albeit not all the time!). Did you know active modes of travel like cycling and walking can have an amazing impact on you and those around you? They can: • help you live longer by halving your risk of heart disease and cancer • help you burn 100 calories per mile, getting fitter and healthier for free • help look after the planet and improve the air we breathe by reducing your carbon emissions If you would like to get out in the fresh air in Nottinghamshire, why not take a look at the Travel Choice website where you could download or request a physical copy of Routes and Rides, which has a number of walks, cycle routes and horse rides across the county? Travel Choice can also provide free bus and cycle maps for the Newark and Mansfield areas as part of a project to help residents, jobseekers, school leavers and employees with free transport information, advice and services to help them explore sustainable travel option. www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ travelchoice/getting-aroundnottinghamshire/walk

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme saving an estimated 5,000 lives a year, however coverage is at a 20-year low. To help address this issue, Public Health England is running a national multimedia cervical screening campaign to: • highlight the risks of cervical cancer, • highlight the preventative benefits of the often misunderstood screening test, • encourage women of all ages to respond to their screening invitation, • encourage women to consider booking an appointment if they have missed previous invitations, and aim to tackle barriers to screening highlighted by research, issues such as fear and embarrassment.
