From zero to HERO!

T

ownscape Heritage Initiative (THI) grant funded works have helped to transform one of Bedford High Street’s most important historic properties from ‘zero

to hero’.

80A High Street, housing Millennium Kebab, is a Grade II listed building, dating from the 17th century, with a timber frame and medieval proportions. It had suffered over time from successive alterations to the shop front and façade, which left it with a poor appearance. The THI helped the owners to fund the reinstatement of a traditional shop front and sash windows of the original proportions at first and second floor levels. Further remedial works were also required to the roofs, chimneys and gutters to secure the building for the future.

6

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The transformation of this building is a great example of the restoration of historic properties being achieved through the THI programme. This heritage-based regeneration scheme has already restored numerous properties in and around Bedford High Street to their former glory. The works at this site have brought about yet another dramatic improvement.” The THI project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Bedford Borough Council and BedfordBID, will come to an end later this year. In the remaining months, the ‘Porter Blacks’ building at 100 High Street will be receiving its final touches, following the recent removal of the scaffolding. First Wedding For New Registry Office

B

edford Borough’s new registry office at the Old Town Hall celebrated its first wedding recently.

Local couple, Christopher Keating and Caroline Connaughton, tied the knot in a ceremony conducted by Superintendent Registrar Miriam Burgess, with twenty guests. The pair, who are the first to get married in the new registry office since it reopened in April, posed for photographs before heading off to celebrate their marriage with friends and family. Bedford’s Registry Office is now open for key services, including registration of births, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships, change of name deeds and the provision of birth, death and marriage certificates. The new registry office also hosts civil partnerships, renewal of vows and citizenship

ceremonies, in the Victorian splendour of the Old Council Chamber and Mayor’s Parlour. The offices adjoin the new public square with its riverside views and bridge to St Mary’s Gardens which form part of the new Riverside Development. Deputy Mayor, Charles Royden, said: “The new registry office is a stunning, historic setting for weddings and civil partnerships in an attractively refurbished location." The new registry office is open Monday - Friday from 9am - 4.30pm, and at weekends for ceremonies only. For more information on the Bedford Borough office, call 01234 267422 or email civil. registration@bedford.gov.uk alternatively, go online www.bedford.gov.uk

MP COLUMN

What a month!

I

would not normally disturb your summer reading with politics, but the events of June and July this year require me to make some comment as soon as possible. If you had asked me to predict, on June 16th, where the country and politics would be four weeks later, I would have never have guessed the extraordinary run of events we have seen. To begin with the tragic- the murder of Jo Cox MP places all other events into context, but how quickly the nation seemed to forget. An outpouring of grief was sincere, and all MPs were touched by the expressions of concern for them, as the public realised how vulnerable our work made us. But the anguished cries for a gentler politics in its wake seemed soon lost.

seemed to place its internal wrangles far above the need for it to do its job of holding the Government to account. And then, what the British do best. I have been to many states where the transfer of power happens after tanks and guns have been on the streets, after weeks, months or even years. That the passing of power in the UK is marked by a removal van at No 10 is no mean feat, brought about by centuries of a relationship between governed and governors. It’s been a mess. But we have been through worse. So here’s to PM Theresa May MP- good luck! Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP

Then, a week later, the Referendum and its result. I make no secret of my dismay – I did not campaign on the issue lightly, and do not believe the result is in the country’s best interest. But it was a Referendum, and the result stands. So we will all make the best of the result including me, and I will be working hard to try to achieve that for my constituents. The resignation of David Cameron the next day was as predictable as rain after shine. There was no possibility of him staying on, and all comments before the Referendum to that effect were simply window dressing the inevitable. The Conservative leadership ‘battle’ that followed demonstrated some catastrophic errors of judgement, as contender after contender demonstrated exactly why none but the eventual winner was capable of doing the job. Treachery was turned almost into an Olympic event on the Government benches, exceeded only by what was happening to the nation’s leading Opposition party, which

Help with upgrading or replacing your business systems Software plays a big part in our daily lives but is usually something we take for granted. It has a wide range of uses, from web sites and apps to the code in a microchip that controls your fridge! Because of this it can be a minefield for any business but upgrading, extending or replacing an existing solution is really just about knowing the right approach. Here are some typical Q&A’s to help you with the challenges you might face. Will we lose data? Well in advance of your software release date you should make sure you test your backups by restoring them to a test system. This will reliably prevent the loss of any data. Will it get in the way of my business? Perform a timed dry run of releasing the final version of your software. This will give you an accurate idea of how much time your system will be offline so you can plan accordingly.

12

What are the risks? Testing the release and rollback strategy of your software is as important as the testing of the software itself. If you follow this guideline it will mitigate the risks. Somebody else developed our software so can we still change the application? Even if you do not have the code for you application there are often still ways to interact with it and extend its functionality. Can a new application access to my old software? Yes you can but there are too many options to list here. Can a Mobile App or a Web Site access my data? Yes this is a very common requirement. It is typically achieved with the use of web services and secure/signed certificates. With over 25 years’ experience, Hyde Software Solutions Ltd. specialise in software migration, system integration and development. Please contact us on 07969 889462 or sales@hydesoftwaresolutions.co.uk for a FREE no obligation consultation to discuss your business needs.

Cat friendly veterinary care Visiting the veterinary surgery can be stressful for cats – the journey to the practice, the unfamiliar sounds and smells and the indignity of being handled by a stranger can all make a trip to the vets an anxious one for both cat and owner alike! Fortunately, simple changes can make a big difference to our feline friends. Here’s how you can help your cat when he or she needs veterinary care.

At home

• Purchase a cat carrier that opens at the top as well as the side. No more dragging or tipping your cat out of the side opening! • Encourage your cat to feel comfortable in the carrier – take off the side door and leave the carrier in a quiet corner of your house in between veterinary visits. Every so often leave treats inside for your cat to find as he or she explores. • Choose a veterinary surgery known to be cat friendly – the International Society for Feline Medicine (ISFM) have a list of accredited Cat Friendly Clinics.

• Very large hospital kennels with igloo-style beds for cats to relax in. • 15 minute appointments so that our catloving staff can take their time with your pet. • Specific training for the entire practice team in cat-friendly handling. • A veterinary behaviour service with expertise in cat behaviour problems. • 24-hour emergency service so that your cat will be seen at our practice by our usual staff whenever he or she needs us. • Home visit service for cats that simply prefer to stay at home!

At the surgery

Acorn House Veterinary Surgery is the only practice in Bedfordshire to hold the Gold Standard Cat Friendly Clinic award from the ISFM. At Acorn House we help our feline patients to feel comfortable with: • A separate cat-only waiting area with elevated resting places for cat baskets and basket covers to provide privacy and security. • Two cat-only hospital wards so that cats can recover from surgery and illness in peace and quiet.

Celebrate softmmer fruits this su

At last the summer season is upon us and although we have had to dance in out of the showers recently, hopefully we will get the chance to enjoy a bit of the summer sun with friends and family. What better way is there to celebrate summer than with our wonderful Bedfordshire soft fruits. Strawberries and raspberries are in plentiful supply but they very rarely local in the supermarkets but if you support your local shop you should find some of the less common soft fruits such as gooseberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants and whilst they are a little sharper tasting this can be easily offset with a little extra sugar or served with ice cream. Blackcurrants make one of the most fantastic rich comforting jams that can be enjoyed in the depths of winter and is well worth investing a bit of time in making at this time of year. Here is a very quick and easy recipe that is not only quick to make but will look good on any table and truly celebrates our soft fruit season.

Quick & Easy Gooseberry Pie Ingredients 30cm circle of shortcrust pastry 450g Punnet of Gooseberries 75g Sugar (caster is good) 1 beaten egg 2 tablespoons of Semolina 1 tablespoon of demerara sugar

Method – Preheat the oven to 200°C, 180°C fan, Gas mark 6. – Roll out a 30cm (12") circle of shortcrust pastry and place on greased baking tray. – Brush the beaten egg onto the pastry leaving a 5cm (2") border. – Sprinkle semolina over the eggwash (to absorb the fruit juices). – Pile the gooseberries on top the semolina and cover them with the caster sugar. – Carefully fold over the border on top of the fruit to hold it all in. – Brush the pastry top with more beaten egg. – Sprinkle the pastry with demerara sugar. – Bake in the oven for roughly 35 minutes. – Allow to cool slightly before serving with cream, creme fraiche or ice cream.

COMMUNITY

necessity within lawful circumstances prevails at the time.

Bedfordshire Police is inviting the public to get a closer insight into the world of policing by taking part in its Ride-Along Scheme. Observers can accompany a frontline police officer and see activities such as arrests, dealing with victims and offenders, statement-taking and Stop and Searches. Since the introduction of the Bedfordshire Police Ride-Along Scheme in November 2014, more than 190 applications have been received. So far over 150 have taken place and the force has received more than 55 pieces of feedback. A total of 98 Ride Along requests were received between April and June alone – more than the total amount for the whole of 2015-16 at 79. Those who take part in the scheme may even observe a Stop and Search take place, in the event that

26

A workshop aimed at providing people with an understanding of police Stop and Search powers will also be held in Bedford on 15 August. MF Youth consultants, in partnership with Bedfordshire Police, will deliver the free workshop at Project 229 in Bedford Road, in order to educate the public, in particular young people, around their rights when being stopped and searched. Anyone interested in attending the workshop can contact MF Youth Consultants on 07943 643 354 or email mfyouthconsultants@gmail.com Superintendent Rob McCaffray said: “Stop and Search is an important tool for us to help fight crime and protect our communities and it’s important we work with members of the public to ensure they have a good understanding of their rights and responsibilities should they be stopped. “Bedfordshire Police is committed to being as transparent as possible about its work and the RideAlong Scheme is one way to help us achieve this. TECHNOLOGY

WHAT ARE COMPUTER VIRUSES? A brief introduction

Commonly, customers with misbehaving computers refer to having caught viruses but this later turns out to be either faulty computer parts or just unhappy software programs. Of those customers who have been infected, the vast majority are not suffering with viruses … A computer virus is a program which infects other computers by replicating itself. Most viruses are damaging in some way, but some merely play tricks on users. Viruses belong to a family of nasty programs known as “malware” (which stands for Malicious Software). Some other examples of malware or viruses include:

• Spyware: software which covertly loads itself onto a computer then enables information to be gathered secretly about a person's internet use, passwords, etc. • Adware: software which covertly loads itself onto a computer then tracks a person’s internet browsing habits or displays “pops up” advertisements while the computer is in use. • Computer worms: a type of virus with takes advantage of security vulnerabilities to copy itself onto other computers on a network (eg the internet). Worms spread malicious code which causes harm by using up broadband, deleting files and sometimes sending documents by email. • Trojans: on the outside, these look like ordinary computer programs with a genuine purpose, but secretly, they also do something else (eg change system files or install other programs). Eg a seemingly harmless game secretly deletes all music and videos. Computers suffering from malware infections can exhibit a variety of different behaviours, most frequently one or more of: • a sudden drop in speed • files going missing • internet searches being redirected to strange websites • error messages • computers won’t start. This outline should not be seen as a definitive guide. AV-Test.org provides independent tests for security software and registers over 390,000 new malicious programs every day. For help with infections of any computer problem, call Jan Rymarz of OakleyIT on 07401 250118.

Bedfordshire’s Domesday Mills – Part 2 Stotfold Mill.

The second watermill listed in William the Conqueror's Domesday survey that still exists today is Stotfold Mill. One of four listed in Stotfold at the time, 1086, the mill is believed to be over 1000 years old. Not the same buildings, of course, but a watermill has presumably stood on his site since late Saxon times. The rent payable to the Baron of Bedford in 1086 was recorded as ÂŁ4 and four hundred eels. His rent

42

collectors must have loved travelling to this village on the county boundary to collect that particular payment! The mill changed hands several times over the centuries and three of the millers went bust. Stotfold born John Randall bought the mill in 1887 and it contained a large dwelling house, granary and stables. John Randall installed a steam engine to improve efficiency (especially

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

in summer when the flow of the rivers can drop below a sufficient level to push the great wheel round) but it only helped for a while as the larger mills drew the business of flour production away from small local establishments. The mill finally ceased production in 1966 and was still known throughout the seventies and eighties as Randall's Mill. Local children believed the site to be haunted by the ghost of a boy who had fallen under the mill wheel and been broken and drowned thereunder, although a similar fate is rumoured amongst many old mill sites across the country, so it was probably only ever a scary tale to keep local kids from breaking into a dangerous old building; the biggest danger coming in 1992 when the building was burned to a charred skeleton and then left, seemingly, to its doom. Over the years, there had been various attempts to get the mill operational and this eventually led to the formation of the Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust; a group formed by local people with a desire to preserve Stotfold's oldest place of work, and after many years of struggle and toil

they quite literally raised the building from the ashes and it ground its first corn for over 40 years in 2006. Today, Stotfold Mill stands as a fine example of a working watermill, and plays host to many open days and events throughout the year. Each May, a large Steam Fair is held on the mills' adjacent fields with many stalls, traction engines, and arena events running across an entire weekend. This is definitely a place worth visiting so, to find out more, have a look on their website at www.stotfoldmill.com and I hope you have a wonderful day out.

Now You See Me 2 Three years ago an almost unheralded movie appeared in cinemas and caught people completely by surprise. Yes it did have a pretty all-star cast but the subject of magicians seemed a little off centre from what you would expect to see from a major Hollywood movie. The lack of promotion it seemed to get would lead you to believe they lacked faith in it instead the mix of action, magic and con/ heist genres made for an extremely enjoyable movie.

FOR ALL YOUR DECORATING NEEDS...

This sequel takes most of the same characters, just changing Isla Fisher for Lizzy Caplan, and much of the same plot mechanics (magic, hypnotism, heist & con) to create another fun filled, action packed adventure that is a lot of fun from the very start to the finale. They even hold back from the normal sequel cliché of trying to do everything bigger and better, preferring to just do what they did successfully before. Yes there are a few inconsistencies that don’t make much sense but other than that if you enjoyed the original movie then you will get as much entertainment from this as you did that.

The Brickhill Book Bug reviews… A Song for Issy Bradley by Carys Bray ‘One day we’ll understand why bad things happen and it’ll all make sense.’ Ian and Claire Bradley are doing their best to live a good Mormon life with their four children, Zippy, Alma, Jacob and Issy. Ian has grown up in the church, but Claire has converted to marry him. Zippy is struggling with the church’s teachings on sex and relationships, while Alma is trying to deal with the disappointment of not being allowed to following his footballing dreams. Jacob and Issy are still young enough to believe everything. On Jacob’s seventh birthday things are chaotic and when Issy isn’t feeling very well Claire doses her up with Calpol and gets on with the party. It’s not until later they discover how ill Issy really is… and by then it’s too late. How does your faith survive when someone you love dies? In her first novel, Carys Bray takes us into the world of the Latter Day Saints, a world she herself grew up in. She shows us how each family member struggles to make sense of their tragedy and how being an eternal family, whatever it may mean in the Celestial Kingdom, starts now, in this world.

GARDENING

The Vulnerable Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameria ohridella)

The Leaf Miner arrived in the UK about 8-9 years ago, the caterpillar feeds within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the upper surface which eventually form brown dead patches, giving the tree an autumnal appearance by July and resulting in early leaf fall. Recent evidence indicates that this insect can cause smaller trees to die while, the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth, and the cumulative loss in stored food products may compromise long-term health of mature trees.

The Horse Chestnut is a very majestic and iconic tree, found in many places throughout Britain including gardens, parks, school grounds and churchyards. The immediate threat to the Horse Chestnut is attack from Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner which pose’s a real threat to the survival of this beautiful, iconic tree which for many generations has been a favorite with children and adults for the Conkers it produces.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it.

Funky Foliage

Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve

your garden needs me!

52

Please mention BedsLocal when responding to adverts | www.bedslocalmag.co.uk

GARDENING tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of superslugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade. I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a

firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety... just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in-yourface foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage. Wasps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. • There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual RubyTailed Wasp. • The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) • While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather anti-social. • They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. • The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. • While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer.

54

• While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black. • Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. • Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. • An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year. Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council first, as many provide pest control services. If yours doesn’t, search online or in the Yellow Pages for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help. By Kate Duggan

SPORT

S

ummer is drawing to a close at Bedford Town FC. The preseason programme is well and truly underway, starting with a solid 1:1 home draw against Hemel Hempstead Town FC on Tuesday 5th July. The Saturday after saw an impressive win against S&L Corby FC, 13:0 was the final score where most players on the field got on the score sheet. The positive performance of the campaign so far happened the following Tuesday, when a strong youthful Stevenage side attended the Eyrie and were sent packing 7:1. Preseason is not about the results however, as Jon Taylor has eluded to in many post match interviews. The positive signs have been the performances and the growing sense of team spirit that is evident in the camp. Last season’s Supporters Club player of the year James Peters has agreed to stay on and has been given the responsibility of captain for this season. He has been joined by Matt Clifford, Ollie Peters, Ben Farrell, Josh Bamford, Marcus Campbell and Chris Cordora-Soanes, who have all agreed to stay for a second season in succession.

and has already showed he is a leading man up front with his performances in preseason. Watson is joined by midfielders Luke Knight and Phil Draycott, who have played for the Eagles before and are returning for a second spell. Other new faces include two new goalkeepers. Sam Wyer has joined from Leighton Town and Adam Harpur from Stotfold. The league fixtures have been released and the Eagles will start with a tough trip to Farnborough on Saturday 6th August. There is a coach travelling to this game which supporters are welcome to use. Bookings can be made by contacting Gerry on 01234 381213. The week after sees two home games against Royston Town (Tuesday 9th August) and Northwood (Saturday 13th August). The big league meeting between Kempston Rovers and the Eagles then takes place on Tuesday 16th August, before the Eagles are start their FA Cup campaign against AFC Dunstable at the Eyrie on Saturday 20th August. August’s league action finishes on bank holiday Monday at the Eyrie against Arlesey Town.

New talent has also been identified, and the club are delighted to welcome a trio that gained promotion from the Southern League Division One Central last season.
