Newsletter June / July 2010 New Bedrock Chairman – James Boden

Bedrock Book Ladies with Mathew Watson (Programme Controller & founder of Bedrock Books)

BIG BEDROCK NEWS NEW CHAIRMAN A new chairman has been announced in the April Bedrock Meeting. James Boden who is currently studying at Havering Sixth Form College is now „in charge‟. He has a keen interest in leadership and loves the whole world of hospital radio. At 19 years old, this will be a valuable experience for him as will it be for the Bedrock team. Here‟s what he has to say; “I am pleased to announce that I only recently became Chairman of Bedrock. It has been a long and winding road but one which has shown I have the attitude, mentality and spirit to be chair of the station. I had considered chairmanship several months back and I can assure you it was a very tough decision to make. It was a real dilemma and took a while to decide but in the end I decided that I believed I would be capable of being Bedrock's Chairman and hopefully I can make a great difference to the stations progression for the foreseeable future”. We wish him all the very best in his new role and we‟re sure he‟ll do a marvelous job. Go James!

BEDROCK BOOKS Bedrock Books are now in business with our lovely book team who go round the wards selling books to the patients for only 20 pence including a free Bedrock Bookmark! Nothing quite beats a good read in the evening to get you to sleep.

BEDROCK TEAM We are all very friendly so if you see us around the wards request collecting we‟d be very happy to talk with you about what we do or even general conversation. It‟ll be a little extra something to add to your day at the hospital. We‟re always happy to bring a smile to the patients of Queen‟s Hospital!

BEDROCK ‘A’ LIST June 2010

NEW BEDROCK MEMBER Richard Spong has been with Bedrock for over three months. He has shown great progress with his skills as a presenter and technical skills with all the computer equipment. He also has a keen interest in Bedrock Hospital Radio as a charity and has attended many fundraising events. Here‟s what he has to say: "After appearing as a guest on one of the shows on Bedrock I immediately felt compelled to get involved with it. I have always had an interest in radio, mainly because of my love for music and its many genres. I see joining Bedrock as an opportunity to gain the necessary experience I need if I am to pursue a career in radio in future. This was the advice given to me by my mum who used to work at Radio London with DJs such as Tony Blackburn. I'm having a lot of fun being a member. The shows are the highlight but fundraising events also have their perks in how they can be a rewarding experience, but also a little challenging. The other members are very friendly and the whole group is enthusiastic about being a part of Bedrock, as now I am too."

WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING As a charity we‟re always out and about organising fundraising events. The Romford Dogs has been very kind to us to let us do our tin shakes time and time again. We‟ve practically become part of the staff there! Other places we have fundraised are the Romford Mall, outside Roomes of Upminster and many other places in and around Havering. Of course our main priority is the hospital. We go round the wards fundraising and request collecting, meeting new patients every time. It‟s always a pleasure to see people improving in health.

Our Thanks go to Innerspace in Covent Garden, London, for providing the talks on meditation. See the photos below to see what it was like. See our events diary on page four. We have plenty more events coming up!
