Notice must be given 5 business days prior to program start for refund. If the required notice is given refunds will be issued less 10% of the cost of the program. Medical refunds given after a program has begun will be prorated and the 10% fee will be charged. Other exceptions are noted in program descriptions.

Cape Ann Whale Watch

Tickets: $33 each (regular prices $40-$55)

Whale watching is a fun, family-friendly activity and you may purchase tickets at the Recreation Office. Once you have the tickets, visit www.SeeTheWhales.com, choose your date/time options and make a reservation at 1-800-877-5110. More information and directions on the website. The Whaling season runs from April through October. Cape Ann Whale Watch is at Rose’s Wharf in Gloucester. Pick up tickets at the Recreation Office. Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets do not expire. (Not valid for the Saturday or Sunday, 1:30 trips June thru Labor Day). Children age 3 and under $10 directly with Cape Ann Whale Watch, please call and request with your reservation.

Everyday Asian Flavors

Instructor: Katie Walter, Two Aprons Cookery

In this class, you'll explore vibrant dishes from a variety of Asian countries, all of which are quick and easy to make. We'll start with Thailand and make one of the country's most popular dishesShrimp Pad Thai. Next is China with Garlicky Soy Green Beans. Then our last dish is a bit of Chinese and Korean fusion - Chicken Fried Rice with Kimchi. Occasionally we will have leftovers, so feel free to bring a reusable container if you want to bring food home and an apron. Class held in Kids’ Club, room 149, 12 Mudge Way. (min 5/max 8)

Katie, owner of Two Aprons Cookery, enjoys food – cooking it, eating it, traveling for it, reading about it and writing about it! She cooks simply, from scratch and seasonally and is passionate about composting and running a less-waste, sustainable kitchen. She has been teaching cooking classes out of her home – first in London and now in Lexington, Massachusetts – for nearly 10 years. In her past lives, she has co-authored a cookbook titled “Some Like it Hot” (Chronicle Books, 2005) and put in time at America’s Test Kitchen in Boston.

Make Your Own Probiotics: Sauerkraut Workshop!

Instructor: Emily Makrez, MS

Owner of F-Word Farm (Farming, Foraging and Fermentation)

At this class on food preservation, you will learn the principles of fermentation and how to make sauerkraut yourself! Did you know most of the sauerkraut you buy in stores is pasteurized, thus killing the helpful probiotics contained within? When you make it yourself, you will see how easy (and fun!) it is to not only capture these microbes, but also create a delicious sauerkraut! You’ll get your hands in there and leave with your own jar of sauerkraut to care for and eat! The demonstration will include the basic principles of fermentation so you will also leave with the knowledge and confidence to be able to safely ferment practically anything! We will touch on the benefits of lacto-fermented food and how adding these foods to our diets are a benefit to our overall health. Samples will be provided! Sweet Baking with Flair

Instructor: Jeannette Pothier, Professional Chef

Flair means baking different delicious pastries like Profiteroles, a cream puff, or pâte à choux is a filled French and Italian choux pastry ball with a typically sweet and moist filling of cream, custard, or ice cream. We’ll make Madeleines, very small sponge cakes with a distinctive shell-like shape acquired from being baked in pans with shell-shaped depressions. Will also make cake using a jelly roll pan and filled with sweet filling. You will learn techniques from the French school on beating, folding and making what seems impossible quite easy. Jeannette earned her professional Chef degree and Culinary Arts Teaching diploma from Madeleine Kamman of Modern Gourmet in Newton, MA. She taught Classic French cooking, including French baking and pastry making. She studied in Aixen-Provence with Ms. Kamman. Jeannette was the day chef at Café l’Orange in Concord while teaching at Modern Gourmet. She wrote the recipes for The Zone, by Dr. Barry Sears and she teaches healthy eating. Jeannette also taped ten classes called Cooking in the Zone that appeared on Bedford Cable TV. She enjoys sharing her knowledge of cooking, especially in the baking arena such as breads and pies.

Emily is the owner of F-Word Farm and educator on all things fermenting, farming, and foraging related. She's passionate about bringing the joy of microbes to others through explanations and demos of all the fermented foods we know and love! Vinegar, Pickles, Hot Sauce, Sauerkraut, Miso, and more!

The Wonders of Beeswax

Instructor: Tony Pulsone, Certified Master Beekeeper

Discover the wonders of beeswax! How Honey Bees make it and what they use it for. We'll then learn how to render it into a usable form – from which we can then use it to make Lip Balm, Candles, Beeswax Food Wraps, and more! A longtime beekeeper will walk you through history and share fundamental Chandler techniques to make 10” beeswax tapers, food wraps, lip balms, and other beeswax items. Tony is a second generation beekeeper and has been keeping bees since 2010. He is a certified Master Beekeeper by Cornell University, President of the Middlesex County Beekeepers Association, and has taught beginner beekeeping classes at MIT since 2015. He has several hives at his home in Weston, that his wife and daughters put up with in exchange for honey.

Puppy Socialization and Basic Skills (for ages: 10 weeks –5 months)

This class will combine the all important puppy socialization with the following: Effective CommunicationBody Language - Focus skills - Energy Management - Basic cues (Sit, Down, Wait, Leave It, Drop It, Walking Skills 101 and Reliable Recall 101). We will also address common puppy issues such as potty, nipping, chewing & jumping. He received his BS in Engineering from Northeastern University and his MBA from Syracuse University. As a College Funding Advisors associate, he now lectures extensively throughout the greater Boston area on his experience and insights in the financial aid system and enjoys guiding families through the college financial process.

Basic Bike Maintenance

This course is geared to newer cyclists. Covered will be basic bicycle maintenance and repair for most bicycles. When you are done with the class, you will have a better understanding of how to set up the shifting and braking on your bike, how to fix a flat tire and best practices to keep your bike running smoothly before and after your ride. Probate and Estate Administration: Facts vs Fiction

We often hear from lawyers on TV and radio talking about the "agony of probate" and the importance of avoiding it. But what actually is "probate" and is it so bad? What is the difference between probate and estate administration? Learn the difference between probate and estate administration, how to avoid probate and how to minimize the steps involved in estate administration. We will also discuss when probate is a good thing, and how to navigate the process. You will also learn about traps for the unwary when trying to set up your estate plan to avoid probate. Margaret received her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College and her J.D.,cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School. She concentrates her practice in the area of estate planning and elder law, including long-term care planning, guardianship and conservatorship, MassHealth (Medicaid) application, and probate administration. She is currently the President of the Board of Directors for Minuteman Senior Services. She serves on the board of the Concord Council on Aging and the Liberty Alzheimer’s Partnership. She is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

You’ll leave the class with a basic understanding of what an NFT exactly is, how it’s used and their impact on the future for music, artists and digital creators! Leave the confusion behind and get up to speed on the latest information you can use for your lifelong learning journey.

Tour the Wang Theatre (Boch Center)

Tour Guide: Scott Towers, Manager of Tours

Get a behind-the-scenes peek at one of Boston’s most venerable theaters with this private tour of The Boch Center. Learn about the theatre’s roots as a Vaudeville Movie Palace and discover unique locations like the “Ice Room” where slabs of ice were delivered to keep the building cool. You will also experience the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame or FARHOF, an exhibit space located inside the Wang Theatre celebrating Boston’s rich music history and the local artists who contributed to the evolution of Folk, Rock, Jazz, and several other genres. See Boston’s contribution to music culture, a series of sculptures of musicians from the Civil Rights era, and a celebration of the guitar with unique pieces from Ernie Boch Jr.’s personal collection, as well as an exhibit celebrating the career of Arlo Guthrie. This unique Hall of Fame is the first of its kind in Boston and illuminates Boston as a music city and the crucial role played by the Wang Theatre in that history. This program is in collaboration with Concord-Carlisle Community Education. Information will be emailed prior to the date for meeting location at the Boch Center. Scott joined the Boch Center in April of 2019 after spending over ten years in the Boston Area Tourism & Hospitality Industry. Most recently, he spent nine years with the Boston Red Sox ending his tenure as the Manager of Fenway Park Tours. He has a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston College and started a small venture in wedding and event videography out of college. With the Boch Center he provides behind the scenes tours and works to preserve the rich history of the Wang Theatre. He is honored to be a part of such a unique enterprise and knows that tours of the theatre in addition to the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame will add an element to the Boston Tourism landscape that has previously not been available and will be of great interest to the millions of visitors that travel to Boston annually.

Introduction to Photography

Have you ever wondered how some photos were taken or how to get into photography? You're in luck, because in this class, we’ll be learning the ins and outs of digital photography. We’ll take photos both outside and in-studio and learn how to make the photos look how YOU want them to look. If you have your own digital camera, feel free to bring it in and we can teach you to work with your own equipment. At the end of this class you will be able to enjoy and be comfortable using a digital camera as well as know how to edit your photos using Adobe Photoshop. Non-Fiction Filmmaking

Have you ever been interested in creating your own non-fiction film but are not sure where to begin? In this class we will help you create your own non-fiction film from concept to completion. You will learn all the aspects that go into creating an amazing nonfiction film including storyboarding, camera techniques, interview styles, editing and much more. During and in-between classes students will have access to all of the professional equipment Bedford TV has to offer. Students will also receive hands-on assistance from Bedford TV staff in order to complete their video. We hope to see you at this class and we are excited to help you create something great! Bedford TV is membership based, non-profit community access television station serving the town of Bedford. Our studio is centrally located at Old Town Hall on South Road. The Bedford TV mission is to make media available, reflective and responsive to the needs of our community. We broadcast on three channels on both Comcast and Verizon cable systems.

Pysanky: Ukrainian Easter Eggs

Instructor: Hanka Robertson

Pysanky are decorated eggs created by using a written-wax batik method with traditional folk motifs and designs. Students will learn how to draw on a plain white chicken egg with a special pen and melted wax, then dye the egg with special dyes. The drawing and dyeing are repeated several times as each layer of the design is applied until the egg is finished. Hanka will provide a short history of Pysanky, instructions with an explanation of the process, motifs and pictures for design inspiration. All supplies are provided and you can expect to make 1-2 eggs. Material fee of $10 payable to the instructor at class. Ages 15+ (min 6/max 14) Class held at 12 Mudge Way, Flint Rm.

Hanka was born in Slovenia and as a child learned to make Pysanky from her mother who was from the former Czechoslovakia where making Pysanky every Eastertime was a tradition. Hanka is an avid Embroiderer and a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and the New England Lace Guild.

Sea Glass Window Workshop

Instructor: Lisa Young of Coastal Craft Workshop

Come join Lisa and create a Sea Glass Window! What a nice home decoration or gift for someone...like Mom for Mother’s Day! You will use shells, star fish, urchins, sand dollars, stones, glass, driftwood, coral, sand and other goodies to make a wood framed 8” x 10” art piece. Create your own design or use one of the provided templates. Due to curing time you will complete your design in the workshop and be given a kit and instructions to complete at home. Cindy started as a designer with Given Erwin in 1994 and has now owned the shop since 2004. She is AIFD accredited and teaches floral design at the shop, adult education, for woman's groups and floral industry events. Given Erwin Florist specializes in custom orders for those looking for a gift out of the ordinary. They love to be different. Looking for something unusual? Just ask! They travel to the Boston Flower exchange each morning, to pick the freshest flowers available, from the best source on the East Coast and special requests are not a problem. Cindy and her staff love flowers, and it shows!

Crystal is an artist that finds great pleasure in teaching mosaics to diverse learners of all ages. She enjoys creating and instructing others how to use mosaics as a way to inspire and spread joy to communities everywhere. Furthermore, she believes that mosaic art can also encourage healing from trauma, illness and loss. Gel Print Collage Workshop

Interested in making collage with gel print? Join this class and learn how to make beautiful trees out of gel prints. You will learn the technique used to make precision collage. Watercolor Journeys: Organics & Plants

In a multi-step process that is part printmaking, part painting, and part drawing, students will create layered, textural images influenced by organics and plants. Organic plant material, and other found items, will be the foundation of this process merging traditional techniques with more experimental techniques. After creating a few “starts,” students proceed on a journey toward abstraction or realism. This introductory class will include demonstrations, discussions of techniques and processes, with individual feedback. Take a journey of exploration and come play in the water. Tissue Paper & Watercolor Texture Workshop

We will use an acrylic medium and tissue paper to create random texture on the surface of our watercolor paper. We will then develop our paintings with watercolor and oil pastels. Stone Carving Saturdays

In this popular one-day workshop, you have the opportunity to carve your own stone, an art form that is not typically accessible. Beginners and experienced sculptors alike will be guided through the process of looking into the rock for imagery, carving into material, planning and forming a sculpture, and using tools. He likes to focus on getting his clients to accomplish their gym goals while building character and mental toughness. Gregg has competed in CrossFit comps, obstacle course races, half marathons and ultimate frisbee. Gregg is always looking for new ways to learn and strive to improve in coaching and in his own journey.

Join us for a very unique yoga experience in nature! Classes take place outdoors on the farm and feature a herd of friendly baby goats. Goat kids are naturally curious and playful, and love to climb on anyone and anything. While this may not be the most meditative and relaxing yoga class you will take, it will surely be the most fun and memorable - perfect for melting that stress! Bring your own mat, blanket, or towel but be prepared for the goats to potentially taste test everything. The class will take place outside, so bring layers in case of cool weather or mosquitos. Sandy grew up in Maine. She received her undergraduate degree in Business at Bentley College. She began teaching fitness classes in college. Sandy attended the Massage Institute of New England, became a CLMT, and had her own practice in Waltham for 15 years. Sandy has been teaching Fitness classes and working as a Personal trainer for more than two decades. She has certification through AFAA, ACE and various other programs.

Mystery Walks

Discover new places to hike and hear tales about Native American settlers and esteemed writers such as Alcott and Emerson. Walks are typically four to five miles and usually rain or shine. Mary, a long time resident of Bedford, has been the spirited leader of hikes, bike trips and other marvelous adventures for more than 30 years in our local area of historic New England. Previously, she worked as the Adult Education Coordinator for the Bedford Public Schools. Her passion has turned into quality leisure time. Now she lives to PLAY. She feels that the reason that folks enroll is for friendship and love of the outdoors. Learning about our region and how it relates to us and to history is her passion. The shared knowledge of these connections and a desire for all of us to feel as though we are young forever is why she continues to lead people through the woods.

Kyle is a PTR certified tennis instructor who has been teaching both children and adults for nearly three decades. He is a resident professional instructor at the Dedham Health and Athletic complex. Kyle has been offering classes in Bedford for 13 years and he offers instruction to all levels and ages. He is also certified in safe play and cardio tennis. Kyle is a Bedford resident where he has raised his two daughters.

Beginner Pickleball Instructional Clinics

Have you been curious to try pickleball, but not ready to join an open play session? Not sure how to swing the paddle, where to stand on the court, or how to keep score? Here is your chance to learn the fundamentals of the fastest growing sport in the country. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, racquetball, and ping-pong played by four people on a half size tennis court with paddles and a plastic polyball. Each class includes learning a new stroke, hitting drills, and game play. It’s great exercise and easy to learn! Equipment will be provided if needed. Please wear comfortable clothing, court shoes and bring water. Wear or bring pockets; we will be keeping plenty of balls in motion for each lesson. Check out www.usapa.org for detailed information. Mark Pirrello is a level 4 NTS Certified Coach and USA Archery Instructor. In 2012, as a camp counselor, he volunteered to help out with archery and after that Summer he was hooked on the sport. The following Fall he started his own company, On the Mark Archery and runs programs for youth and adults through afterschool programs, recreation programs, corporate events and professional outings. He feels archery is a sport to empower people to achieve a new skill, lead to success and build character.

Spring-Summer Co-Ed Slow-Pitch Softball

Register online for the Softball Interest List if you are interested in playing this Spring/Summer. We will contact you with more details and give you information for registration if we have enough players to form teams. If we do not have enough players, we will see about a Pick-Up program, if we have people interested in coordinating.

• Please indicate if you would be willing to be a Commissioner for the League, Captain or Pick-Up Coordinator.

The program is an In-Town, casual, fun, co-ed league that begins in the spring and continues through the summer. Teams will be created by a committee of League Co-Commissioners and Captains, with an emphasis on creating balanced teams. Participants may request to play with up to 4 people. Players must be age 21, Bedford/Hanscom Residents or Bedford High School alumni. There will be a meeting in later March for people interested in being Commissioners, Captains or being on the committee.

Schedule to be determined: You may participate in Spring only, Summer only, or a Spring/Summer option.

Spring: (April -June) 8+ games, some doubleheaders and playoffs. Sunday games in late afternoon. Summer: (June–mid-August) 12+ games, some Sunday doubleheaders and playoffs Sunday games in late afternoon and one mid-weeknight game.

Men’s Summer Outdoor Basketball League

Men’s Basketball returns to the outdoor courts at BHS this summer for the 11th season of the league. The season is June 1 - August 3. There will be 10 games plus playoffs. Playoffs will be held in A and B divisions to accommodate both competitive and recreational teams. All players must be Bedford residents, Bedford High School graduates or employed by the Town of Bedford. The cost includes uniforms, 2 patched officials/game, 2 scorekeepers/game and playoff games for all league members. Games will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and some additional weeknights during the season as needed.

Fee: $1,000 Per Team /$1,250 after June 8 deadline

A mandatory meeting will be held at 12 Mudge Way, Flint Room (near Recreation Office) on Thursday, May 18 at 7 pm. All Captains/Team representatives and free agents must attend. Rosters and team fees must be submitted by June 8. Unattached players may put their names on a free agent list by contacting the Recreation Department (will be placed if space is available).
