Waco schoolgirl helping the homeless stay warm By Wendy Gragg Tribune-Herald staff writer Saturday October 23, 2010 Email Print

Taylor Lloyd, 10, is hoping to make this winter a little warmer for some Waco residents through her “Hats for the Homeless” project. It started in December 2009, when Taylor, a fourth-grader at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, noticed a man outside in the cold, who had no hat. “My husband said, ‘Well, what could you do about that?’ ” said Taylor’s mom, Becky Lloyd.

The project took off from there. On Sunday, Taylor wants to be able to hand out close to 70 handknitted hats to people at the Church Under the Bridge. The hats will first be blessed at a 9 a.m. service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Taylor knits on a round loom-like contraption, an activity that she said can produce a hat in one day. “It’s fun, it’s fast and it feels good because I know that I’m going to do something good for someone,” she said. Taylor figured she could make even more hats if she recruited others to knit them, too. She’s taught at least 12 friends to knit on the loom and taught a class of 50 people at St. Paul’s. She hopes they’ll all be contributing hats. The word about Taylor’s mission has spread and friends of friends have been pitching in hats. Becky Lloyd got an out-of-state call from a woman who wanted tips on teaching her church to knit. “I tell Taylor, ‘That’s really awesome. You had an idea that’s important enough that people want to take it on for themselves,’ ” Becky Lloyd said. Lloyd said St. Paul’s encourages students to see how they can make a difference with their actions. And Taylor may have gotten the message to reach out from what she sees at home. www.printthis.clickability.com/pt/cpt?acti…

Teri Holtkamp, homelessness coordinator for the city of Waco, is touched by Taylor’s “Hats for the Homeless” project. She said it’s simple and lovely the way Taylor saw someone in need and knew she could help. “It’s precious. That’s the way it’s supposed to happen. If I could just get adults to see things as easily as children see them,” she said. Holtkamp said Taylor and her friends are definitely filling a need in the homeless community. Every January, the Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition gives out coats and cold-weather gear at the Project Homeless Connect. But Holtkamp said before that event, there is often a need for hats and scarves and gloves, especially if there’s an early cold snap in the area. The Salvation Army of Waco is an excellent place to make donations of coats and cold-weather gear for the homeless, she said. www.printthis.clickability.com/pt/cpt?acti…

Now that Taylor has seen the power of one little idea, she’s thinking even bigger. She said she wants to keep knitting hats and sell them and give the proceeds to Fuzzy Friends. Becky Lloyd appreciates the enthusiasm, but reminds her daughter to see one project through before she starts the next. wgragg@wacotrib.com 757-6901
