Like most truly great organizations, Bay Creek is always looking for ways to add more enjoyment, more value and more service to the unique experience here—adding amenities like the new equipment, programming and landscaping at the Life Center, for example. Then there’s another exciting endeavor: the construction of an expansive new Cart Barn led by the innovative architectural firm Sinclair Hillie, along with plans for the future renovation of the Coach House.. “We’re proud of these improvements,” says Bobby Masters, General Manager of Bay Creek “It’s truly a privilege for us to add ease and enjoyment to our residents’ daily lives. More Exciting News... “It’s hard to follow an announcement as big as Troon, but Bay Creek really is bursting with news right now!” Bobby says. Most notably, two exceptional new property offerings have launched—Muirfield and The Commons at The Fairways.

Properties Released in Much-Anticipated Muirfield

Without a doubt, one of the most exciting real estate offerings in Bay Creek right now is Muirfield. With Phase 1 officially launched, 69 exceptional homesites have been released. Muirfield is set among the spectacular Nicklaus Signature course and homesites are nestled alongside fairways, lakes and woodlands. “The development team really put in an incredible amount of care and planning here,” says Bobby. “And the result is a well-placed, beautifully designed neighborhood that will have the perfect mix of homes, trees and scenic views.” The interest in Muirfield has been tremendous—but not surprising. “You’ve got a storybook kind of area in Phase 1

that’s going to exude that classic Bay Creek neighborhood feel,” Bobby explains. “And then you have the Muirfield Bluffs properties that look out on the Bay and private beach. These are the kind of big-view properties that will be the site of stunning family homes. This neighborhood is right next to the Life Center, too, and that’s another major plus.” “These homesites represent the final release of single-family homesites along the Chesapeake Bay. We’re looking forward to seeing it continue to take shape,” Bobby adds.

EASY, ELEGANT LIVING: The Commons at The Fairways Our entire team is thrilled about The Commons at The Fairways. These are new low-maintenance attached single family homes in an already established section of The Fairways, Bobby says. The collection by Preserve Homes & Neighborhoods will consist of eleven individual structures with three or four residences per building. These new homes offer a lock and go’ lifestyle, with all exterior maintenance handled by the Homeowners Association. An extra perk: the initiation fee for the Club Sports Membership is included with purchase. We’re preparing a fully furnished model where visitors can walk through, see the interior finishes and get a feel for these homes, says Bobby. Ranging from just over 1,900 SF to nearly 2,700 SF, these homes will offer well-designed spaces and floorplan options, like adding large bonus rooms, a second owner’s suite, and more. We have just unveiled the two home models: the Vinings and the Vickery , Bobby reveals. Both home plans have flexible spaces that allow homeowners to purpose rooms to match their lifestyle. These

plans were designed to work for different types of owners,” explains Bobby. “You’ve got optional bonus areas that can be converted into a game room, or even a second owner’s suite.” This along with spacious areas that flow from kitchen to dining to living make The Commons plans incredibly appealing. “Another big plus is the attached 2-car garage. This is golf cart country,” laughs Bobby. “A spacious garage is a must-have here!” Also included with every Commons residence is the luxury of a lifestyle maintenance plan which includes the care and maintenance of the lawn and all exterior surfaces. “This is an intimate collection set in one of Bay Creek’s great golf neighborhoods,” says Bobby. “The Reservation Program is underway and we encourage you to speak with a member of the Bay Creek team to get involved.”

Bay Creek has enjoyed many chapters of development and growth. In 2019, Preserve Communities dedicated itself to a myriad of exciting plans and enhancements for Bay Creek that continue to be realized. Among them were two foundational goals: 1) Preserving the beauty of the Shore and deepening the connection to Cape Charles and the Bay, and 2) The introduction and improvement of lifestyle and Club experiences and world-class amenities. The creation of the 350-acre Nature Preserve, trails, nature programs, community activities and responsible, eco-driven practices are now a way of life at Bay Creek.

Now, the Bay Creek and Preserve Communities leadership teams are excited to announce a defining moment: We welcome Troon, a global

leader in club management, to manage club operations at Bay Creek. Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, will manage golf and club operations, food and beverage, course agronomy and membership marketing and programming.

“Troon has a track record of excellence in achieving the very goals we have set for Bay Creek,” says Bobby Masters. “The vision for Bay Creek is unique, and is tailored to the needs of our members and guests.” Troon Privé works collaboratively to define and deliver each club’s unique vision. In their own words, the Troon Privé team “focuses on elevating private clubs by making them relevant, healthy and sustainable for decades to come.”

For the last two years, Bay Creek has also been diligently working to improve, “Having Troon know-how and professional reimagine and elevate the lifestyle private club management to activate the vision for this community will be amazing for those and Club experience. who live here and visit here,” Bobby says.

Soundings The enhancements will be comprehensive and meaningful. Industry veteran Rich Hohman has been tapped for the critical role of Interim Club Manager. As one of Troon’s leading onsite Transition Club Managers, Hohman—who served in the position of Executive Director of PGA WEST among other clubs— will lead the transition and assist in the appointment of the future General Manager of the Bay Creek Club. “Troon is very excited about this opportunity to partner with Preserve Communities at such a beautiful property,” says Hohman. “The Members and the Bay Creek Managers and Staff have welcomed us with open arms, and we have hit the ground running. The Member Survey results will help us shape our future direction and we look forward to better things together going forward!” he adds. At Bay Creek, community is key. The partnership with Troon was born of a desire to deliver the best possible experience for members, guests and the team members whose livelihoods are here.

how to fulfill our goals for the community. This is a uniquely personalized approach, yet it offers all the benefits and advantages of the powerhouse that is Troon.” Troon will support Club Leadership with daily operations to achieve peak performance in all areas: Club Operations, Golf Course Maintenance, Food & Beverage, Sports & Wellness, Sales & Marketingand Accounting & Finance. But partnering with Troon Privé goes much deeper than optimizing operations. Troon Privé acts as a long-term partner in enhancing experiences, adding new amenities, ensuring the very best talent in every position and increasing benefits for members. In fact, full golf members of Troon Privé Clubs can enjoy preferred rates and access to more than 100 private courses and amenities, 150 resort and daily fee courses, and more. The result is a healthy, sustainable Club with world-class experiences for members—at their home Club in Bay Creek and beyond.

“Finding the right partner was critical,” explains “At the end of the day, we are here to enhance Bobby. “We began by electing to discuss Bay the daily lives of the owners, members and guests Creek’s vision with this world-renowned entity… of Bay Creek,” Bobby Masters says. “Troon gets us everyone in the development and private there.” community industry is familiar with Troon’s reputation. There’s no shortage of excitement happening when it comes to Bay Creek’s cuisine, events and community gatherings. Executive Chef Jason Van Marter shares a quick look back as well as some of the new things that are coming up next at Bay Creek. “2021 was a great year. In the summer and fall, golf went into full swing. It was an incredibly exciting season with some large tournaments and member events,” Jason says. “Bay Creek hosted a Member Appreciation party in conjunction with the Member-Guest Tournament. We created a cocktail reception type of event that was attended by some 300 people. We had a good time putting this together and seeing it come off so beautifully for the members and their guests.” “The King & Bear golf tournament took place mid-November. This was our largest tournament of the year,” recalls Jason. “The Bay Creek culinary team helped make this iconic event a tremendous success.”

At the Coach House, two more exceptional Wine Dinner evenings have taken place. Selecting unique wines and pairing them with a complementary menu is one of Jason’s and Chef de Cuisine Michael Koch’s favorite member events. “We recently held a Pacific Northwest Wine Dinner—an eight-course meal for 40 people. Selected wines from Oregon and Washington were also served,” says Jason.

Valentine’s Day menu, laying the groundwork for an ideal environment to celebrate this day with a loved one or special friend.

Soon after, they hosted an Italian Wine Dinner showcasing eight courses of Italian wines with intriguing Italian foods prepared by Michael. From there, the Bay Creek culinary team geared up for a memorable New Year’s Eve, where they curated and presented an intriguing à la carte menu and bubbly wine flight. It offered the perfect pre-party gathering before ringing in the New Year at Bay Creek. Now that it’s January, there are a lot of great things on the horizon. “We’re initiating a new Happy Hour at the Coach House, which we expect to be very popular,” says Jason. “And we’re working on plans for Valentine’s Day as well as the next Wine Dinner.” Chef Michael has already curated some prime choices for the

WINTER RECIPE Chef Jason shares one of his own favorite recipes for a hearty winter dinner.

Smoked Venison Leg Roast INGREDIENTS • 3-5 lb venison leg roast trimmed of sinew. I like to use a whole deboned leg myself. Brine • 1 lemon, juiced • 2 dried bay leaves • 5 tablespoons kosher salt • 1 qt water • 16oz beef broth • 1 onion chopped • 2 large cloves garlic crushed • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns • 1 rib celery chopped • 1 carrot chopped • A few sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme

“We’re also very excited about the Troon partnership,” says Jason. “We’re in the midst of that process now. It’s a great transition… they’ll be helping us move forward on all fronts and provide us the tools necessary to do so successfully,” he adds. Jason explains that there are a lot of components involved in successful member and guest experiences when it comes to dining, events and hospitality at Bay Creek. “We’ll have all the resources we need to offer better pricing, different ingredients to further enhance our offerings, newly modified menus—our possibilities with Troon will be endless,”, Jason says. “It goes back to our vision of taking Bay Creek into the future of culinary arts…and our dedication to a great resort community atmosphere. ”

INSTRUCTIONS Brine 1. Bring the brine ingredients to a boil then cool completely. Submerge the venison roast in the brine in a small pot or similar container (or a thick plastic bag set into a flat tray or container to prevent spills). Refrigerate the venison roast in the brine for at least 12 hours. I like to aim for a solid 24 hours. Smoking 1. Preheat smoker to 350F. Smoke for 1 hour then reduce temperature to 225F. 2. Remove roast from Brine and pat dry. At this point I like to put an additional BBQ rub on the roast. Totally optional. 3. Cook roast to an internal temperature of 130-135 F. 4. Remove the roast and let stand in a warm place for AT LEAST 15 minutes before slicing. After resting, this should give you about a medium-rare to medium doneness.

BAY CREEK NATURALIST WINTER OFFERS UNEXPECTED BEAUTY AND PROMISE AT BAY CREEK Bay Creek naturalist, Joe Fehrer, has an uncanny ability to see the beauty and life in all things—especially in a winter landscape. We spoke with Joe about what’s happening in Bay Creek’s Nature Preserve this winter.

They’ve all put out their buds.” And they can be quite lovely, too. “I was out at the Preserve this morning and there’s a grass species that becomes very noticeable this time of year known as broomsedge, ‘Andropogon virginicus’. And then there are the salt marshes… the tidal marshes…they turn a beautiful tan-gold color. And in some areas, it has beautiful areas of lavender to crimson coloration,” says Joe.

Looking Ahead Joe will continue his popular themed walks series that highlights the history of the Cape Charles and Eastern Shore area with an interesting twist. “I’m sharing information about the history and nature of the region, but I’m also bringing it home to the specific property that is Bay Creek,” says Joe. There have been a cadre of people who have attended every one of Joe’s walks, which will continue through the winter months. “We’ve worked through the history starting 35 million years ago on up through the Native Americans who were here pre-colonization. In a month or two, we will end up at present-day Bay Creek,” he says. Coming up next, Joe will lead his nature walkers from the Native American to colonial and civil war eras, focusing on their effects on the Eastern Shore. He’ll also talk about the railroad coming to the Eastern Shore and how Cape Charles came to be

It’s an exciting time at Bay Creek, with a new year and so much to look forward to. “Winter at Bay Creek is an interesting time, and there’s a lot to see if you know how to look,” smiles Joe. “The dormant areas, the plants… they are very

much alive even if not at first glance. There’s a lot of promise that lies just under the surface.” Joe welcomes everyone to take part in the upcoming nature walks and in the unexpected and unique beauty of nature in winter at Bay Creek.

Meet Dr. Higgins FOUNDER OF CAPE CHARLES VETERINARY HOSPITAL People love their pets, and at Bay Creek, it’s no different. On any given day, you’ll see folks out walking the nature trails with their canine companions or a couple golf carting with a furry friend nestled between them, taking in the breeze. Neighbors’ felines are often spotted birdwatching from a window or curled up on a sunny screened porch. In the last few years, caring for these precious pets has become much more convenient and comprehensive, all thanks to an exceptional veterinarian with a heart for animals and a love of the Eastern Shore. Meet Dr. Nathan Higgins, the founder of Cape Charles Animal Hospital. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Virginia Tech and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Higgins practiced small animal medicine in Manassas, Virginia and lived in a busy suburb of Washington, DC. When he first visited the Shore in 2013, Dr. Higgins was intrigued. “It was a refreshing contrast. I met great people and saw an exciting small-town community that was growing,” says Dr.

Higgins. “But there was no veterinary clinic in the county. It felt like I was called to be here.” Dr. Higgins moved to the Shore from the DC area in 2014 and set up his practice to serve the residents of Northampton and Accomack counties. Life on the Eastern Shore is just as he hoped it would be. “Coming from the DC area, I was used to the hustle and bustle of life and I didn’t want that anymore,” says Dr. Higgins. “Even though this area has changed over the last seven years I’ve lived here, it still holds its small-town feel, with lots of locally owned shops and restaurants.. It hasn’t become over-commercialized with corporate entities. When you need that, you can easily be in Virginia Beach in about 45 minutes—it’s ideal.”

“My primary goal is to keep pets healthy,” says Dr. Higgins. “I’m a firm believer in preventive medicine and educating my clients about the needs of their pets.” In service of this goal, Dr. Higgins provides much more than just the vaccinations and checkups that people normally think of. “We are full service at Cape Charles Animal Hospital. That includes surgeries, dentistry, hospitalizations, routine preventative medicine, X-ray. I also have a certified team conducting ultrasounds here,” Dr. Higgins says. “I’m fortunate to have a great staff who works very hard and is accommodating and compassionate.”

With happy, healthy patients (and their owners), and a community that continues to grow, Dr. Higgins Convenience is an enormous benefit for Dr. Higgins’ is making plans to add another veterinarian to his patients, too. “If you’re going to the grocery store, practice in the future. you have to come by my office,” he laughs. “Because my practice is located along the highway, people can Outside of his important work with animals, Dr. get their pets here easily.
