“...Lack of sanitation has four main consequences. • In health, two million people die every year from diarrhoea, threequarters of whom are young children. Many of these lives could be saved by improved sanitation and hygiene. • The economic loss caused by lack of toilets is about $100 billion per year, mainly the values of people's time spent either being ill with diarrhoea or caring for family members with diarrhoea. • In social development, lack of toilets affects people's dignity, privacy, status and safety. This is especially important for women and girls. Forexample, girls' education suffers because many schools around the world still lack segregated toilets for girls, so at puberty many girls stop going to school. • Lack of sanitation affects the environment by causing serious pollution. Over one billion people have no toilet of any sort and defecate in the open– if they all defecated in one place, that would produce a pile of shit big enough to fill a football stadium every day. Imagine the disease spread by that. This problem has a complex solution – if it was easy it would have been done by now. It needs a systemic intervention. ...”
