The proposal for a Professional Hairdressing Apprenticeship was designed to enhance skills within the sector, and attract young people back to hairdressing, which can be perceived as a difficult sector in which to make a sustainable career. Creating apprenticeship opportunities in cities and small towns across the country will increase job opportunities for

young people within their own communities and will help to keep communities alive, building sustainable employment into the future, suggested Bridget Haren, President of The Hairdressing Council of Ireland. “The Hairdressing Council of Ireland was set up as not-for-profit organisation to make essential and much needed changes in the hairdressing industry. We can see that these positive changes have already begun. I am delighted to be part of such a results-focused organisation and I hope that all will partner with us in this exciting new development for our industry. We have 750 members and this Professional Hairdressing Apprenticeship will encourage newcomers to our industry”, she added.

Denman announces Paul Stafford as Global Creative Director

In September 2017 the multi award-winning natural skincare brand, Kinvara Skincare became the first Irish Skincare brand to be recognised by the International campaign ‘Beat the Microbead’ for the ban of micro plastic beads in cosmetic products worldwide. Kinvara Skincare was commended for its outright ban of microbeads in all of the brand’s skincare products, most notably in its new exfoliator, the Elemental Exfoliating Powder.

Denman, maker of the world-famous D3 and other professional tools, recently announced the appointment of British Hairdressing Hall of Fame member Paul Stafford as Global Creative Director. The move brings Paul, who has been using Denman for more than 30 years, into the heart of the long-established, family led company. Paul will lead its creative contribution to the industry, supporting Denman’s education efforts including mentorship of 2017 Denman’s Stage Star competition winner, Sam Carpenter.

Microbeads are tiny particles of plastic that are added to thousands of personal care cosmetic products, such as soaps, shower gels and facial scrubs sold around the world. These microbead plastics, hardly visible to the naked eye, flow straight from the bathroom drain into the sewer system. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter out microbeads and that is the main reason why they contribute to the ‘Plastic Soup’ swirling around the world’s oceans. Sea animals absorb or eat microplastic beads mistaking them for plankton and the microbeads get passed along the marine food chain.

As Global Creative Director, Paul will also lead the soon-tobe-launched global ambassador programme, The Denman Global Collective, which features established and emerging stylists from across the globe. Paul’s appointment coincides with Denman’s 80th anniversary. In 1938, John Denman Dean was inspired by a revolutionary new material, Nylon to create the iconic Denman styling brush.

The Sunbed Association recently welcomed the publication of a review of available medical data that concluded no proven causal relationship exists between moderate commercial sunbed use and an increased melanoma risk. The results of the studies have been published in two articles in the scientific journal Anticancer Research (Vol 38). The review also refutes recent reports from the EU and the World Health Organisation. Chairman of The Sunbed Association, Gary Lipman said; “This careful review of studies confirms what we have long known to be true but authorities and other vested organisations have repeatedly refused to acknowledge and accept; responsible UV exposure on a sunbed by those able to tan does not cause melanoma. The publication of this scientific review identifies and highlights many flaws in the studies that have been used to determine public policy, campaigns, legislation and public scaremongering regarding sunbed use.

Everything from protocols to décor should be reviewed and importantly, don’t forget to ensure your sunbeds are in tip top condition. Regular servicing reaps dividends in minimising any downtime and ensuring maximum performance for your clients.

“We will be demanding an urgent review by all public and charitable organisations who have published information claiming, stating or even suggesting a link between sunbed use and melanoma. Our industry has been an easy commercial target for the anti-tanning lobby for many years and this has to stop.”

Refreshing the retail side of your business - for example, indoor tanning lotions and accessories, can help boost additional revenue even before the season takes off. Do give some serious consideration to incentivising staff to maximise the potential from this part of your business. If in doubt as to how to maximise retail opportunities, talk to your suppliers for support and advice in this area.

Pro MUA and owner of Denise’s Beauty Clinic, Denise Bennett White tells us why she chooses ARTDECO as her professional makeup brand. When did your makeup obsession start? I have always loved makeup, but my obsession started when studying beauty therapy, and I have been growing my skills since then. How long have you been a makeup artist? 18 years now, having received my qualification in 1995. When I finished my beauty therapy training, I felt that, while the makeup modules where a great basis, I didn’t feel my qualifications were quite enough to call myself a MUA. I returned to training several times to focus on techniques, trend and advanced makeup skills. I even travelled to the West End in London to complete a theatrical makeup course to further hone my makeup skills, which led to me doing makeup for musical societies and pantomimes back home. Where did you study makeup artistry? I qualified at the renowned Bronwyn Conroy Beauty School in Dublin for my beauty therapy qualifications and furthered my studies at the LA Make Up Academy in London and the International Makeup Academy in Dublin. Continuing to learn and keep up-to-date with trends and techniques, I like to offer my customers the best experience possible during their makeup service. How long have you used the ARTDECO makeup brand? I have been using ARTDECO since 1997. It’s been my original love mark brand and I couldn’t imagine using anything else. STRESS AT WO RK Within the workplace, an employee will often be confronted by a number of different challenges. These challenges or factors can also have a negative effect on the employee’s ability to deal with stress, or be the cause of stress. An organisation’s culture can be the key in determining the factors of work related stress. This particular element can highlight whether working long hours is effecting employees, or if there is an expectation to bring work home. Poor communication and management style also contribute and will indicate the organisations attitude towards stress. Working Demands Demands on the employees can result in elevated stress levels. This may occur if too much work is expected and there is insufficient resources provided. The work may be too difficult, or management may have inadequately trained the employee to complete the task. Control of Work The lack of control over the job can result in heightened stress levels, this may happen when the pace of the work is set outside of the workers environment. Relationships within the Workplace Some employees may have difficulty interacting or building relationships with existing staff. In some situations this can lead to interpersonal conflicts, which could just be down to a lack of communication. Position & Training When an employee begins a new job, stress can develop because their position is not clearly defined or they do not fully understand what is expected of them. They may not be completely confident of the scope and requirements of the position. There is a lack of support from their surrounding colleagues, as well as from the management. Training can also be a major factor, as a lack of training at induction or when a working task has changed can result in stress. Additionally, the training may not be adequate and result in the employee

If you aim to be the very best that YOU think is possible, then YOU become the judge - the panel of experts. It’s very easy to live up to those expectations, because they are entirely yours. Nobody else can say whether you have failed or succeeded, and nobody else gets to decide the criteria for what you decide is right for you. If only you can judge whether you have succeeded, then obviously, if you are doing your best, you must score 10 out of 10 every time. How liberating is that? To do your very best, simply set your standards, then all you are left to

feeling worried or anxious. What does this mean for Employers? If stress is allowed to embed itself within the workplace, it can have a number of negative effects on the business. An increased number of employees calling in sick will reduce output and productivity. It will affect the workforce’s morale and motivation. High staff turnover and recruitment problems indicate a lack of control by management. This can cost organisations. How Employers should manage Stress Employers should adopt a prevention, management and minimisation policy. This approach will look at the issues of stress, what is the source of stress and will help stop its reoccurrence. Management of the employee through their career. This is finding the fine line between micro-management and a lack of engagement with employees. Finally, the minimisation of stress can occur through counselling of employees or assistance programmes to provide extra support if the employee feels it necessary.

e have a crazy pension system in Ireland. Yes, we have the ‘Old Age Pension’ in place which entitles people in the workforce to receive a pension of €243.30 per week when they reach the age of 68. However, the big problem is that “The Irish Peoples Pension Fund” is actually not there at all, and is being paid each month out of tax revenues that the Government receive! With people living much longer now than before, this system is surely similar to the ongoing Defined Benefit pensions fiasco. These were being funded by employers in the main but made investment assumptions and gave guarantees that were unsustainable. These have proved a disaster to employees and employers alike and by and large they are all now being wound up. Will the same thing happen to the current system of State pensions in Ireland? I for one would not like to be dependent on the state for my income in retirement. Is there an alternative way to give you more security for when you are older? Of course there is. I call it the Young Age Pension. All this requires is for you to take some action – talk to a financial advisor in your area and start your own personal pension that can be paid to you when you get to age 60. The earlier you start the better - the bigger the savings fund the better the income it will produce for you.

Ask your skincare supplier for as much product information and training as possible, and don’t be afraid to experiment to create new treatments. Choose your skincare brand based on its ability to deliver results, rather than its market position. Make sure all salon staff can confidently explain the individual benefits of every single product, and when/how to best use it. BEAUTY FROM WITHIN Why everyone needs to be taking collagen supplements by Jennifer Rock

It is a truth universally acknowledged that after a certain point, that point being around twenty-five years of age, we will not produce collagen at the same rate that we used to. What this means is that your skin will slowly start to become more lax, crêped, wrinkled and less plump. Collagen is an integral component of the structure of the skin - think of it like the foundation of a house, making sure everything stays in place. This age-related loss of volume can be difficult to deal with as there is not an abundance of non-invasive treatments out there to correct it. There is Ultherapy, otherwise known as microfocused ultrasound with visualisation (MFU-V), which targets the SMAS and creates the effect of damage on the skin’s tissue to encourage it to produce more collagen and elastin. However, this treatment comes at quite a high price point and the effects last for a year, when you would then need to top up with another treatment. The alternative is to stimulate the production of collagen from the inside rather than the outside. Enter collagen supplements. There is a wealth of brands that produce them, with some brands such as Skinade dedicated to creating collagen supplements and collagen supplements alone. The benefit of collagen supplements is that they are a damage-free, non-invasive way to urge the body to create collagen and they are taken daily, meaning that you have a constant booster. If you have looked into collagen

supplements before, you will notice that they are predominantly in drink form rather than in capsule form. This is because collagen in drink form has higher bioavailability and thus a 95% absorption rate and can have a higher concentration of collagen. When collagen enters the blood stream, it triggers the fibroblasts to synthesise collagen throughout the body.
