Welcome to the May / June issue of your Beauty Professional Ireland magazine. It’s hard to believe that it’s summer time again, how the year has flown by. And you know what they say about the sun shining and hay! With the summer in mind I would like to draw your attention to the latest products for you to offer your clients, as part of a treatment - or to sell to - within our new look product pages. I must say that the atmosphere here in BPI HQ has been one of major excitement since we launched the Irish Nail and Irish MUA Championships. The Championships take place on the 22nd (Irish Nails) and 23rd (Irish MUA) of February 2015 in the Red Cow (Moran Hotel) Pavilion & Business Centre, Dublin. It is going to be fantastic with great prizes! There will be a social aspect too; we can all meet up and check out the amazing work that will be on show. In addition to the competitions, there will be live demos from industry peers and businessto-business workshops from brands and business services. It all promises to be an unmissable weekend! We have been inundated with interest from professional nail techs and make-up artists, and we’re delighted to create an Irish arena for professionals to showcase their skills. ULSTER BANK ACHIEVER AWARDS Ulster Bank is calling on SMEs across the island of Ireland to enter the 20th Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards. The awards are open to businesses across all sectors and entries can be submitted via Ulster Bank’s Business Achievers’ Awards website. The overall winner will receive a comprehensive prize package including a �50,000 publishing bursary with the Irish Independent, business mentoring from Enterprise Ireland, a full-service communications workshop, as well as national and regional media exposure. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission will have a dual mandate to enforce both consumer protection and competition laws. Welcoming the publication of the Bill, Isolde Goggin, Chairperson of the Competition Authority and Chair-designate of the new organisation, said: “The creation of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission serves the needs of consumers in Ireland by creating a new organisation with robust powers in the enforcement of both competition and consumer law. Anti-competitive practices are damaging to both consumers and the wider economy. The ultimate aim of the new body will be to ensure open and competitive markets where consumers are protected and empowered and businesses actively compete.”

This year’s Golden Mask for Make-Up Art went to Einat Dan, who lives in Berlin. The prize is regularly awarded to make-up artists by KRYOLAN Berlin and Messe Düsseldorf at BEAUTY DÜSSELDORF, honouring special creativity, technical expertise and dedication to enhancing the professional image of make-up artists. The award ceremony took place at the Meeting Point in Hall 10 of BEAUTY Düsseldorf on Saturday 22nd of March 2014. Einat Dan grew up in Israel. Her career as a make-up artist initially started in Tel Aviv and New York. After several years in Milan, the capital of fashion, Einat Dan found a new home for her creative mind in Berlin. She specialises in fashion, beauty and avant-garde make-up as well as in creative make-ups and body painting. Using her love of detail, she draws from a wealth of different techniques, colours and themes. She is widely known as the “Queen of Detail”.

NATURAL & ORGANIC PRODUCTS EUROPE REPORTS RECORD TURNOUT FOR 2014 The Natural & Organic Products Show Europe, in the ExCel, London had a record turnout this year. Now in its 18th year, the sold out show featured 550 exhibiting companies and enjoyed an 8% increase in total unique attendees (excluding revisits) compared to 8,810 in 2013 (a 30% increase since 2012). Significantly, the surge in footfall has been backed by glowing testimonials from across the show floor. New Product Showcase The show’s New Product Showcase was a hive of activity – and the first port of call for many visiting buyers. Featuring a record total of 320 entries for 2014 (up 8% from 2013), showcase visitors voted for their favourites on Sunday 13 April. The winning exhibitors were presented with their trophies by TV presenter, Julia Bradbury, at the industry’s prestigious Natural and Organic Awards later that night.

Functionally Made-Up Lucy Earley chats to Tina Newman of All Beauty Brands about Chris Krenzer Minerals.

Tina Newman is a qualified beauty therapist and make-up artist who has worked in the beauty industry for over ten years. She worked with several leading brands as a business consultant, trainer and brand manager, specialising in the area of cosmeceutical skincare. This inspired her to develop a make-up brand that was both good for the skin and offered excellent coverage. The resulting make-up range is called Chris Krenzer. What’s the Chris Krenzer Krenzer brand all about? Multi-functionality and treating the skin from the start - it’s as simple as that! As a skin specialist, I found the most typical skin conditions we see on daily basis in Ireland and the UK are premature ageing, rosacea, sensitive skin, acne and pigmentation. These skin disorders are simply due to UVA and UVB light exposure, which in turn cause free radicals to deplete our skin of vital vitamins and minerals; specifically vitamins A, C and E. To Be Wed Jennifer Rock looks at the Irish bride in 2014 and what you can do as a Beauty Professional to help ease worries about her big day.

Some Irish bridal facts: V The average bridal age is now 32. Groom average is 34 V The majority of weddings happen in August V The number of brides finding suppliers on Facebook has risen year-on-year V 69% of marriages take place on a Friday or Saturday V Theme planning takes place increasingly on Pinterest and Instagram Many claim the bride should look like herself on her wedding day, not an imposter, yet with pounds and stones lost, skin preened and plumped, toned and tanned we indeed expect the bride to look as glossy and as ‘magazine-like’ as possible. But how does a beauty professional tap into this important and rewarding market. After all, you’ll be instrumental in making her (and possibly her bridal party) look amazing. Get them early A wedding day starts as early as the engagement, my top tip would be to target the couple at this stage, as this is when the journey truly commences. Target sounds harsh, let’s say ‘make them aware of your services!’ Consult In the consultation you should offer various packages specifically for brides and also for grooms. Bearing in mind grooms tend to ‘branch’ out: i.e. have a massage, facial or waxing or two more than their norm! We could view the packages in tiering options similar to what a hotel / catering company may offer the couple. This way we can tie in with their specific budget, i.e. Gold, Silver, Bronze to highlight the array of treatments we could potentially offer to both. Consider all factors after you’ve ascertained the following: theme, look, goal, budget, what makeup style she loves, dislikes, her dress, the colour scheme, the bridesmaids, the location, the skin concerns, how is she affected by stress? Is she to tone up (lose weight?). What parts of her body will be exposed? Is there to be a honeymoon? The 20•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

list is endless and yet all will have a direct impact on the rapport and consequently the end result. Fashion is important, however, we as unbiased professionals must advise the bride that what is currently ‘on trend now’, e.g. a very dewy finish, may not be the best suited for her skin type, or large unruly brows may need to be tweaked for a classic timeless picture, one they will still cherish in time to come. Bringing pictures in to show us, will help us to appreciate what she envisages as her finalised and perfected wedding look. Do you think a bride would show up to a hairstylists without looking at a hair style portfolio? No! So, the same should apply for us. It’s a Shoot! Let’s face it, weddings are photo shoots from beginning to end. So the camera plays an integral role and we must respect that throughout. Tan may fade on camera, certain areas which we may ‘get away with’ in real life are not as forgiving on camera. Contouring and highlighting must be considered symmetrical - otherwise we could distort a brides face in the black and white shots. The texture of the skin is more noticeable, some products which appear fresh and dewy in daylight are deemed too wet behind the lens. Similarly areas of dryness tend to daw more attention. It is worthwhile knowing these tips and tricks. Organisation Being organised with almost OCD like tendencies are important on such a morning! Having a rapport with the mother of the bride or the chief bridesmaid will take the pressure off the bride herself. Remember you are working, and must take a polite and professional command if timing is being neglected. Work with the hair stylists and other professionals as closely as possible and respect each others timings and needs; without giving yourself least priority. Pop yourself in the ‘good memory section’! Ensure you are remembered. Some salons provide pink sparkling water in champagne flutes with strawberries to ‘set the tone’. Many provide mini samples in a goodie bag for the honeymoon toiletry bag, either way a little gesture will go a long way. Most of all, enjoy the day yourself, if brides terrify you - or irritate you - perhaps this niche (yet booming industry) is not for you. If any client feels valued and understood, we know she will return through your doors tenfold, so ensure that all the finer details are thought of before you embark on the bridal journey.

1. Prepare the natural nails. Perform minimani (cuticle work and shape the natural extension edge). Eliminate and purify with Scrubfresh. 2. Select a solid colour appliqué as the base colour. 3. Select a size that best covers the nail plate without touching the skin. 4. Start from the cuticle, completely smooth out appliqué over nail. Firmly secure edges. 5. Trim excess overhanging appliqué around free edge. 6. Make appliqué flush with nail by filing in one direction, in a downward motion. 7. Create custom designs by selecting accent pieces and applying over the base colour. Accent pieces may be layered as desired. To finish, for up to 1-week wear, apply a top coat to finish. Tee says: “I was born and raised in Malaysia. My first love was fashion, I initially designed clothes and accessories for Lucy’s Lounge in Temple Bar. When I was getting married I realised that not many make-up artists in Dublin knew how to apply make-up on Asian skintones. So that’s what led me to go to makeup classes and I got my ITEC Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media make-up artistry. For a year I interned at the MKF Institute, where I learnt a great deal about the industry. The highlight of my career (so far) is winning the Make-Up Monday Competition run by Crown Brushes. Currently, I am looking at all the areas of make-up artistry: music videos, editorial photo shoots, tv, bridal, teaching, fashion shows and special effects simply because I am not sure about the exact route I want to take. I would love to be an artist of all the disciplines. I work as a freelancer around Dublin and occasionally teach at Face-It Studio in Co. A Real Doll Ellen Kavanagh talks to Anita Whyte, founder and owner of www.dolledup.ie, who explains how she built an online beauty business How did you start out in the beauty industry? In my other business I was visiting offices and talking with women everyday. Our conversations always came around to beauty; whether it was the latest products, where they got their hair done, what works for them, etc. I realised that there was a real niche in the market for an online beauty resource - where women could search for all things beauty. What have you learnt about online business? Shortly after launching in 2011 we soon realised that it wasn‘t a case of “build it and they will come”. We embarked on a steep learning curve trying to perfect the mix from SEO

(search engine optimisation) to social media engagement and building strong relationships with PR companies, beauty bloggers and, of course, the businesses we feature. We realised that a website is never finished and is always evolving. We have continued to evolve and improve our website and business ever since. What‘s it like working with your other half? We‘ve been working together since starting our first business in 2008, initially it takes a bit of getting used to, and you’re with each other 24/7. We believe now that it’s important to ensure roles are defined from the outset. What has been a particular high? Recently we won an award for Best Business & Corporate Read for our Blog on Dolledup.ie in The Bops (Blog

& Online Publishing) Awards. The Blog is only a year old and we were up against some very big companies - so we were all thrilled! And a particular low? When we launched Dolledup.ie website in Oct 2011 we sadly lost a much longed for baby, that was pretty devastating. We had to pick ourselves up and the business did give us something to focus on. What advice would you give on starting a web business? Choose your web developer carefully, with a view to a long-term relationship, as the website is always evolving (as I mentioned) so it’s important to identify that you can work with this person / team on an ongoing basis. The summer’s welcome increase in business can also bring with it certain challenges for an employer, none less than the requirement for extra staff. Seasonal or ad hoc workers can provide a huge advantage for employers. However, if managed incorrectly it can leave an employer exposed by having workers on the books during off peak times and therefore potentially maintaining continuity of employment. Staff Contract Options If a company has a defined period in which they wish to hire workers for (let’s say a three month busy season, or a six month maternity cover) then an option available to them is a fixed term contract. on a particular date. A fixed term contract provides a degree of flexibility for an employer as they can take on the staff member to cover this particular period and the contract will cease on a specified date. An alternative to this is if a company has a particular project running and require additional resourcing for this then they can bring on employees on a specified purpose contract. This type of contract is used where there is no certainty as to when the exact job will end, however the employees are brought on to cover a particular task or project and when this project ends the contract will terminate. An additional option open to employers is that of a casual worker. Casual workers are defined as parttime workers who work on a casual

basis, have less than 13 continuous weeks’ service and who are not in regular or seasonal employment. The danger with casual contracts is if the employee continues to work beyond 13 weeks they are effectively classed as a part-time employee, and as such the company would need to look at terminating their employment in the same way they would a permanent employee. With all seasonal workers care needs to be taken to ensure that the right contract is provided to avoid leaving the company exposed down the line. Balancing Act Expert Business Coach Liz McKeon tells us how to get a better work / life balance.

Running your own salon can consume an incredible amount of time and energy. To avoid feeling burnt out, set yourself strict work-life boundaries. Retaining a personal life outside of your business may seem like an impossible goal at times, but with the right strategies in place, you can successfully achieve a manageable work life balance, most of the time... Top tips to achieving the perfect work life balance for you: V Draw a line between work and home. Get into the habit of separating the two, when you are at work, you are at work, when you are at home, you are at home. V Always stop for meals. On average most salon owners work a minimum of 64 hours per week. Taking care of yourself and establishing healthy eating habits is vital in order to have the energy required. V Make a practice of ‘switching off’. You need to build in uninterrupted thinking time into your day, away from technology and the expectation of immediate response. V Outsource wherever you can. Think about what you could delegate and to whom. V Filter your calls and refrain from taking unscheduled calls during your working day. V Make time for a holiday. V Set priorities. To feel more balanced in life and business, set priorities and create lists. V Manage your time. There are 24 hours in the day, ideally 8 for work, 8 for leisure and 8 for rest! V ‘Saying NO makes you grow’! Learn the power of saying no because sometimes we forget how important it is to say ‘no’ when we are busy. V Stop complaining and change your life! Become committed to keeping a positive happy attitude, regardless of what you are facing. V Assume responsibility - that is the solution. If you have a problem or difficulty to overcome, you are responsible to fix it. V Manage your environment. For example, a simple change to make with emails is to open and deal with them at set times, not 48•••••Beauty PROFESSIONAL IRELAND

whenever one pops into your inbox. V Manage people’s expectations and demands on you. We all get into habits that, in turn, form the expectations and views that other people, clients, staff and suppliers for example, hold about us. Other people’s demands on our emotional and time resources are a significant aspect of life balance. If you do not manage these demands they will leave you with no resource for yourself, your family, your other interests in life, and the change you want to make in order to pursue them. V Construct your own approach to life – challenge what is sometimes imposed on you. Life changes fast. Conventions and beliefs of the past are not necessarily right for the future. V Develop your own rules! Life balance is a personal thing. It must be what works for you – not what someone else decides. Work life balance and personal happiness do not necessarily depend on earning more money or expanding your salon business. Other factors can have a much bigger impact on our well-being. Age, and ‘life-stage’ particularly affect what makes us happy and balanced, as does our personality, which stems from our genetic type, up-bringing and life experiences. There is no single model that is right for everyone, and no single approach is right for anyone for their whole life. We cannot simply become happier by wishing it. We must first understand what makes us happy, and then plan how to change these things! Good luck…

Teaching Matters Welcome to our new Column by Derek O’Kelly of the Waverely Academy. In this installment he looks at the issue of supporting Dyslexic Learners Dyslexia is very common in adult education, in fact, you can be almost certain that in every twelve learners there will be at least two people with reading, writing, spelling or comprehension difficulties. But contrary to previous beliefs, dyslexic learners are among the most intelligent people around, they just learn in different ways. Generally speaking, they need a structured learning environment that uses a variety of teaching techniques. And here’s the really great part; all learners will benefit if you adapt your teaching. Here are some tips that will support dyslexic learners. Your teaching should be: V Multi-sensory methods that stimulate all areas of the brain are very effective e.g. visual, hands on, verbal, etc.

V Sequential – Structure learning so the student can build skills and knowledge in a logical format. V Cumulative – i.e. teaching helps the student to connect with what is already known and builds on prior knowledge and experience. V Repetitive – i.e. frequently recapping to help with consolidation to compensate for weak short term memory associated with dyslexia. V Challenging cognitive skills – i.e. teaching that encourages the learner to think about the information and to use their problem solving and critical thinking skills. V Relevant – Using specific and concrete examples and relating them directly to the material being studied. V Visual note taking – learners should be encouraged to use visual note taking methods to sum up learning e.g. mind maps, spidergrams, doodling, colours, numbers and symbols. In summary; adapting your learning for dyslexic students can bring an element of fun to your teaching and will benefit all learners.
