believe in miracles. I believe that a pregnancy–a new life–means the beginning of a family, and that there is nothing more important, dignified, or beautiful than that. I believe that motherhood is

built on parenting with purpose not perfection. Our world is in despair, women are in a constant struggle for perfection and comparing themselves to others but they are hungry, hungry for the real beauty of motherhood. I believe that comparison is the thief of joy and creativity. Strong mothers are the very core of society, and I have been learning daily as I travel on the journey of motherhood with my own two, that one tangible way a mother can show her appreciation and understanding of what a big deal being a mother is, is by planning an intentional, deeply meaningful purpose to her parenting. Taking old traditions and making new ones, creating meaningful memories with her family.

It’s not about being a perfect mother, it’s about living and breathing a purposeful motherhood where you keep choosing to embrace joy and the beauty of it.

I

believe in chances, in possibilities, in new experiences and journeys. I believe in the color black, in the color pink, and in living colorfully. Life is full of people and groups trying to tell you how to

look, to act, to think, and it takes courage to step back and decide your own concepts of “perfect” and “happy” and “beauty”. When you do step back, you can experience everything fully and beautifully, and find others who do, too. I believe in strong women, and in women supporting women, saying “no” to forced ideas of competition and instead joining together, living colorfully. The act of motherhood, especially, is both a difficult and exciting time full of newness and possibility. It unites people of all kinds in a special way. Every culture and family has its own unique traditions and protocols, working together with old and new to do their best to raise and grow a child from the womb to the world. Motherhood is a patchwork, a tapestry, of culture and good intentions. The nurturing

believe being artists, a lot of our days are filled with creating; creating moments that will last forever. Creating that painting they will look at in ten years and laugh with reminiscence. Creating

stories about their favorite make-believe friends. Creating yummy foods in the kitchen, and living each moment with getting the most out of life that matters to a child. I want my kids to look back at their childhoods and be able to relive each memory with happiness and joy. I hope to fill them with the confidence needed to succeed in life through creativity. Showing children they matter, and are loved, can change the future. My fashion sense is comfortable-chic. I love jeans and gray t-shirts mixed with timeless accessories and that messy beach mane of effortless waves. I’ll even don a graphic tee representing a beloved hero or two.

regnancy for me is one of the most beautiful experiences. Creating life is such a miracle and a wonderful gift that we as women are blessed to do. This particular pregnancy came with a roller coaster ride though. After trying for 4 years and experiencing 3 miscarriages, this pregnancy seemed as though it might have the same fate. But I was certain this one was going to stick. From the very start I was bleeding a lot and terrified I might lose the baby. The doctors put me on bed rest and as time went by, the bleeding turned into a blood clot that didn’t go away until my 4th month of pregnancy. I wasn’t lifted from bed rest until the blood clot was completely gone. This, of course, left a lot of time to think about all the “what-if’s”. I had to distract myself with a lot of TV. Once I was free to move around like normal I was able to let the excitement sink in that everything would be okay and I was finally going to have a baby. The 2nd trimester is always the most enjoyable. You are out of the worrisome 1st trimester and you have the most energy, you feel the “sexiest” in the this part of your pregnancy as well. I enjoyed showing off my, already large, baby bump! My husband and I spent a lot of time rubbing, talking, and singing to my belly. The last trimester is always the “hurry up and wait” trimester but also the most exciting and uncomfortable. I loved every moment I could feel her moving around and her cute little hiccups would bring tears to my eyes. My belly was so large that everyone thought I was having twins! But no, I just make big babies. Willow Skye was born on 8.8.14 weighing 8lbs 8oz via a scheduled C-section 5 days before her due date. Once I heard her little cry and saw her precious face for the first time, I was so overwhelmed with every emotion imaginable. I was almost in disbelief that she was real. She was our miracle baby and she was finally here with us, in our arms! I didn’t want her out of my sight for a second.

Every day I am so grateful for the opportunity to be her mother. She brings us so much joy. I do know, that having the experience that I had, brought me so much more patience. I’m a pretty patient person to begin with but I surprise myself with just how calm I am even when she wakes us up 5 times a night. Me and my husband are still brought to tears just watching her sleep. I feel alive again! My heart is filled with so much love. If I can give any advice to new moms; it’s to embrace every moment with positive energy, and remember that your baby is experiencing everything for the first time too, and you are the teacher. How you respond will be the same way they respond in return. Hold them as often as you like, the time simply goes by too fast! - Barbara

h e n the birth is over, there will be parts you remember most clearly. The moments when time paused, it stood still, and you soaked in the feeling of the moment, the emotions, and everything around you deeply. The moment you held your heart in your arms for the first time, the softness, warmth, and new baby fragrance you will keep alive in your heart to think back on in years to come… This, our first issue is for us the birth of a meaningful beginning to our magazine. We were inspired by real mothers, by the memories they’ve already made, and those they will create in the days and years to come, because I am going to share a secret with you as a mother too; some of the sweetest days of motherhood are never “planned”, they come when you least expect it, they make you pause, they take your breath away. There is so much meaning in being inspired by those who have traveled the journey in which you’ve just begun. Both in your pregnancy, birth, and the new family you and your husband create together. While you may draw inspiration and encouragement from mothers who’ve come before you, know that no pregnancy, birth, or journey of motherhood is perfect, and that is okay. Take the best memories with you and don’t dwell on the struggles, purposeful means more than perfect. Your journey in motherhood is an opportunity to start a family your way! A new generation on the family tree and new meaningful memories to create and cherish for generations to come. We are honored to share inspiration from real mommies with you in this first issue, celebrating the beauty of motherhood in the many unique and special ways it comes. We can’t wait to see how you create your own meaningful beginning to motherhood.

Design & Decor In a world with design inspiration at our fingertips, the possibilities are endless when planning your little one’s nursery. y husband and I love the beach and we love to travel to new places any chance we get. The two passions sparked the inspiration for the nursery. My hope is that our love of travel and adventure will pass on to our sweet baby Piper.

I started by collecting maps, artwork, and toys that reminded us of places we have traveled to. Some of the fun reminders of places we have visited are; a Heather Brown picture from Hawaii, photos of Santa Monica (found on Etsy), and a small painting of a wave and Mt. Fuji. I also wanted the room to be visually stimulating. Babies spend a lot of time on their backs and I wanted her to have something beautiful to look at when she is laying in her crib. That sparked the idea for the star decals on the ceiling (thank you Pinterest for the inspiration!) and the shell chandelier. Finally, I wanted to add things she would enjoy and play with as she grows, such as a wooden taxi from a trip to NYC and a stuffed sloth and owl perched on shelf. One of the most enjoyable parts of designing this nursery was picking out things that I hope she will love and eventually be able to play with.

What was the most important thing you wanted to achieve when creating this space? I wanted to create a space that was serene with a sense of whimsy. I wanted it to be a space comfortable for both Piper and myself since we both spend a ton of time in the nursery. Most importantly, I wanted the nursery to reflect the things we love and to share them with Piper. Now that the accent walls have dried and bedding is neatly tucked, what is your favorite thing about the room? My favorite thing is the artwork. I love watching Piper’s face as she studies the different prints. What’s the first thing people notice when stepping foot into this room? The first thing people notice is the ceiling and chandelier. If you had to remove one key item from the room, what would you part with? Right now I’m emotionally attached to every item of this room because it all reminds me of those precious first months with our sweet baby. If I had to pick one thing to remove it would be the slip-covered chair to make room for a reading nook and play area. If you could add another item to the room, what would be your first choice? If I could add another item it would be a covered play area shaped like a VW bus or Airstream trailer. This adorable camper playhouse from Land of Nod would make a fun addition to the room. http://www.landofnod.com/jetaire-camper-playhouse/f13331

started with colors that I wanted in the room. I wanted a space that was bright, but warm and welcoming as well. I created this by mixing the gray walls with the green, orange, and blue accents.

Now that the accent walls have dried and bedding is neatly tucked, what is your favorite thing about the room? I love the rocking chair, I spent so many hours in the chair rocking and nursing him. We now spend nights reading books, singing songs, and saying prayers before bed. Definitely one of my favorite purchases! What’s the first thing people notice when stepping foot into this room? The colors that pop off the wall, and how it makes the room inviting.

If you had to remove one key item from the room, what would you part with? The monogram above his bed. I originally wanted a piece of art hung above his crib. I would swap the monogram and get a canvas or piece of art to hang in place.

EASY UPDO Photography: Stephie Joy

Being a mommy is hard work and I am always looking for a quick way to not sacrifice my style on limited time. I am a big fan of dry shampoo and creating easy hairstyles that do not require washing my hair every day. Who has time for that? Something I would have cringed at pre-mommyhood but is now my reality. This is one of my favorite go-to easy updos to look stylish and put together in a time crunch. It’s easy, uses minimal products, and you can do it with fresh washed or preferably a couple days unwashed hair.

1. Run a hairbrush through your hair and smooth out and tangles. With a hair curling wand take 2 inch sections of your hair and curl the bottoms about 3 inches from the ends upward. 2. Seperate the front section of your hair and bangs, and back comb the section, hair spray, and then secure section out of the way with a clip.

Pregnant Skin Take Control! WRITTEN BY: CHARITY HALL

Pregnancy can undoubtedly be one of the biggest skin-changers in a woman’s life. Dry skin can turn oily, smooth skin spotty, and often hyperpigmentation and redness can occur, which is difficult to treat. The most important thing to understand with changing skin types is that your previous skincare will most likely no longer be suitable, especially if your skin has become sensitive. So, most important during pregnancy is to use gentler, more natural products to ease irritation and begin taking care of your new skin type early and effectively. I’ve rounded up some of the best gentle skincare lines and products for different skin needs and issues.

Dry Skin or Dry Combo

If your skin takes longer to get shiny and oily, has flaky patches that you notice even more when applying makeup, or even gets itchy, you most likely have a dry skin type. Skin can also be combination, meaning one type is dominant but also has features of another skin type. Combination/dry skin is going to have some or all of the above qualities, but may get oily in certain spots, such as the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). Like with all skin types, it will get lighter or worse depending on the season and your environment. It’s important that dry skin is properly exfoliated and moisturized to remove dead skin and hydrate to prevent flaking.

Ole Henriksen Truth Crème™ Vitamin C Advanced Hydration

Ren Ultra Moisture Day Cream A replenishing day cream that provides instant and long lasting hydration to leave dry skin soothed, optimally hydrated and looking beautifully healthy.

A luxurious crème designed to brighten, firm, and provide unparalleled moisturization.

Simple Facial Scrub Our Smoothing Facial Scrub gently lifts dry, dead skin cells to help your skin look brighter and more even textured

Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask Creamy, penetrating night mask helps skin drink deep to replenish lost moisture, build reserves for tomorrow.

No7 Beautiful Skin Cleansing Balm A luxurious crème designed to brighten, firm, and provide unparalleled moisturization.

Oily Skin or Oily Combo

Oily skin can often be seen as the most bothersome of skin types, but it does have its advantages; for one, oily skin is less likely to wrinkle as badly! If your skin quickly becomes greasy, your makeup separates and becomes very shiny especially in the T-zone, or you’re more acne-prone, your skin type is probably oily. Oily combination skin can be oily yet still get dry flakey patches. The most common mistake with oily skin is washing it too often and too intensely and not moisturizing. If your skin has its oils removed and none replaced, it will overproduce oils, making you even more greasy.

No7 Beautiful Skin Night Cream Normal/Oily Skin A light, non pore blocking moisture cream to hydrate whilst rebalancing oil production overnight and preventing breakouts. Designed to work in harmony with your skin.

YES TO TOMATOES DETOXIFYING CHARCOAL MUD MASK It is the most decadent detoxifying experience...ever! Even dreamier? It’s so rich and creamy, you’ll feel as if you are at the spa. (No... really!)

Dramatically Different™ Moisturizing Gel Dermatologist-developed formula combines oil-free hydration with skin-strengthening ingredients.

No7 Beautiful Skin Foaming Cleanser - Normal / Oily Say goodbye to shiny skin with this gentle, soap-free formulation. The foaming ingredients remove make-up and impurities with Witch Hazel to help tighten pores without drying skin.

CLEAN & CLEAR® OIL ABSORBING SHEETS These super soft, silky sheets can be used easily around your nose and other oily areas of your face.

blmommy.com | BEAUTY & LIFESTYLE MOMMY MAGAZINE 67

Normal Skin A normal skin type is neither overly greasy or dry. Average skin will get a slight sheen to it, but not as much as an oily type. It may also occasionally get dry patches, especially if the face isn’t washed and exfoliated often enough, but they don’t occur on a normal basis and intensely. Normal skin doesn’t need as specialized products as the oily and dry types. Ole Henriksen Sugar Glow Face Scrub This invigorating scrub deep cleanses, smoothes and refines the skin as it polishes away impurities. CLINIQUE Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector This powerful serum is dermatologist developed to be safe and comfortable. In clinical trials this serum was comparable to a leading prescription ingredient in visibly reducing dark spots—a verified 58 percent improvement at 12 weeks.

Yes to Carrots Fragrance Free Daily Cream Facial Cleanser True to its name, this is indeed a fragrance-free cleanser, and it’s a very good one for those with normal to dry skin not prone to breakouts and/or for those who prefer a more emollient cleansing formula

Simple Micelar Cleansing Water A gentle fluid cleanser with an ingredient list that reads more like a gentle liquid makeup remover than a standard water-soluble cleanser.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner Helps refine surface texture while providing the ideal preparation for Ultra Facial Cream or Moisturizer and gently removes surface debris and remaining residue while hydrating and comforting skin.

Sensitive Skin Sensitivity can occur with any of the above skin types at any time and can come and go, especially during pregnancy. Skin even becomes more sensitive during menstrual cycles. Sensitive skin will easily become irritated, itchy, red, burning, dry, stingy, or tingly by chemicals, strong natural ingredients, too much exfoliating or abrasion, sun, or heavily scented products. Therefore, it’s important to find products that are gentle yet still effective. Ole Henriksen Blue/Black Berry Enzyme Mask A luxurious, aromatic gel mask that will renew and condition sensitive skin by gentle exfoliation.

KIEHL’S Ultra Facial Moisturizer A luxurious crème designed to brighten, firm, and provide unparalleled moisturization.

KIEHL’S Clearly Corrective Clarity-Activating Toner High-performance clear toner gently re-texturizes skin and Infuses skin with hydrating actives for noticeably cleaner and softer skin

REN Evercalm™ Global Protection Day Cream An antiaging moisturizer for skin that is delicate or affected by everyday stressors like smoke and pollution.

Ole Henriksen 3 Little Wonders A three-step daily regimen developed for an effective, easy, and healthy skincare routine to treat all major skin concerns.

YOUR B A B Y

BODY WRITTEN BY: ERICA ZIEL

MOVE YOUR BODY MAMA! LOOKING FOR EXERCISES YOU CAN DO ALMOST ANYWHERE? HERE ARE 5 GO-TO YOU MUST TRY, PREGNANT OR NOT!

D

id you know that more and more research is proving that staying active throughout your pregnancy can result in some awesome benefits to both you and baby? Including the time you spend pushing baby out, I see this all the time with my clients and women who stay moderately active during their pregnancy, not to mention the ease of getting back into exercise after baby. These exercises are wonderful for you to do as a circuit to 4 times through 2 to 4 times each week or even every day if you choose. All you need is you! And if you have a pair of light weights that’s even better,

you can do these exercises anywhere; at home, the park, while waiting on your older child at practice, you get the idea. Ideally you should aim to work out 30 minutes most days of the week, more if you like and even if all you have is 10 minutes – go for it! Because even just 10 minutes of exercise every day does add up, so pick a couple exercises (pst… be sure to include this first exercise) and get your body moving mama!

P

lies are a wonderful way to strengthen your pelvic floor and booty muscles, both are important to help minimize back pain during and beyond pregnancy. Complete 20 small tricep pulses then move on to the next exercise.

1

. Standing in a plie position, heels pressing together and lifted, lower part way down into your plie squat and hold this position.

2 3

. Keeping your elbows by your side, exhale as you press your arms straight back squeezing the back of your arms. . Inhale as you bend your arms back. Continue holding the plie until you complete all 20 reps.

EQUIPMENT: 3 TO 5 LB. DUMBBELLS MODIFICATION: KEEP YOUR HEELS ON THE GROUND.

tip Continue practicing your kegels throughout your daily activities until around 34 weeks, then spend more time relaxing your pelvic floor.

A

favorite among my clients, pregnant or not! Plus, squats are a great exercise you can do everyday that also help strengthen your deep core muscles, those are the muscles that help you push baby out and flatten your belly after baby!

DO YOUR SQUATS IN FRONT OF A MIRROR SO YOU CAN SEE THAT YOU ARE DOING THEM CORRECTLY. GOOD FORM IS A MUST!

tip

f

Do your squats in front of a mirror so you can see that you are doing them correctly. Good form is a must!

1.

Stand with feet wider than shoulder width apart and slightly rotated out; your knees should be aligned with your feet. Lower your hips down as low as feels good for you, while maintaining good form and sticking your butt out.

3

2.

Exhale as you stand up, rotate to your left, pivoting on your right toe, allowing the rotation to come from your hips. Keep the focus on your core, “hugging your baby” while squeezing your glutes. Continue reaching your arms up and around to your left.

4

. Inhale, return to your squat.

. Exhale as you stand up and rotate to your right, pivoting on your left toe and reaching your arms to your right. Continue alternating sides.

complete 10 reps on one side then switch. Modification: Hold on to a supportive surface such as a chair or wall for added balance support.

1

. Reach your left arm overhead while keeping all your weight on your right leg.

2

. Exhale as you gently activate your abdominal (think “hug your baby”) as you bring your left elbow and left knee towards each other (they do not have to touch).

3

. Inhale as you lengthen your arm and leg away from each other, keeping that light abdominal connection. Continue on the same side for 10 reps, then switch sides.

IT CAN BE A CHALLENGE TO FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WORKING YOUR ABDOMINALS AS YOUR PREGNANCY PROGRESSES, AND WHILE TRADITIONAL CRUNCHES ARE “NO-NO”, THESE STANDING SIDE BENDS ARE A SAFE WAY TO WORK CORE MUSCLES.

Embrace the Bump

The power to create life and carry that life as it grows within us is a daily miracle for 9 months. Unselfishly we freely give our bodies over to be a nurturing and protecting home for a baby already loved. From the first moment a mother finds out a new life is within her, she will subconsciously caress and protect her baby bump. Her heart knows. Let these mom-to-bes inspire you with their pregnancy stories and beautiful bump photos!

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. psalms 139: 13-16

NICOLE & DILLON

How did pregnancy change you as a woman? Pregnancy changed my maturity level so quick! It showed me that now my life & decisions effected someone elses life so I needed to make good ones. It changed how my outlook on life is & showed me you can love something so much without even being able to physically see it. What do you wish you’d known before giving birth? Something I wish I would’ve known before giving birth is if you get up & move around it helps ease up the pain of contractions.

Working to become a digital/film hybrid shooter she works hard, immersing herself in the industry in hopes of becoming on of the country’s top wedding and lifestyle photographers.

JILLIAN & DAVID

How did you find out you were expecting? This was my second pregnancy, so I had an idea of what it felt like to be pregnant and when I woke up one morning I just knew something was different. I immediately ran to the bathroom and took a test, and sure enough it was positive! How did you tell the father? I ran out of the bathroom and woke him up by saying “I think I’m pregnant!” I’m pretty sure I had some way I wanted to tell him that was really cute, but in that moment, I couldn’t wait. And I needed him to confirm that there was a second line. How has pregnancy changed you as a woman? It has made me truly appreciate our bodies. It’s a miracle that we are able to create a human life. I am proud of everything my body is able to accomplish and I don’t take it for granted any more.

What are your beauty must-haves while pregnant? A great gentle cleanser like Purity Made Simple by Philosophy, Burts Bees lip balm, and a good undereye concealer. What is one thing you find beautiful about being pregnant? It’s so hard to pick just one! I would have to say feeling the life inside of you has to be number one. Feeling her move and kick was absolutely incredible. It’s a very intimate bond between a mother and her child. Something no one else will be able to experience. Sure, daddy, grandparents, family and friends will get to hold him or her once they enter this world, but no one else will be blessed enough to feel that child grow from within. What are your 3 must-have pregnancy items? 1) Workout clothes that will fit you throughout the pregnancy. Looking and feeling good can help motivate you to stay in shape (I loved Lululemon Wunder Under Roll Down pants and Cool Racerback tops). 2) A great pair of maternity jeans. It’s worth the splurge! 3) Maxi dresses and maxi skirts.

XENIA & ERIC

How motherhood has changed you? I now live my life to revolve around my son and his well being. My priorities have completely shifted to making sure he is well taken care of at all times. I have become much more vigilant of my surroundings and mindful of the type of environment he’s in wherever we go for his safety and health, and for my peace of mind. Advice for new moms? If you can, get a doula! Best decision we made was to hire Elizabeth Schatz from New Mama Support in Santa Clarita. Her knowledge, compassion, and understanding for what new moms experience during such a significant life event have been so valuable. She has been there every step of the way from prenatal visits, to the labor and delivery, to post-partum visits to provide objective advice, support and empathy when needed.

What do you wish you had known before having a baby? Breastfeeding. Although it’s not easy at first, once passed the initial discomfort, I have enjoyed the process of feeding my baby and providing him with quality nutrients for his growing body. Yes it is time consuming, and yes there is a lot to learn about it, but the bond it provides for my baby and I makes it worth the effort. I love to see his little face content and happy after a full feeding. To know that God designed my body to birth this beautiful baby, and then to feed him with my own body, is absolutely beautiful.

SKYLAR WYATT PHOTOGRAPHY 757.621.4449

Skylar Wyatt Scott was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. She took up photography in 2007 after stumbling into her high school photo shop class. That class inspired her and soon she taught herself how to use a camera. Growing up in the country, she acquired a love for nature and old run down things. You will find that most of her sessions are held at an old barn or in a field with the crop of the season. She finds most inspiration when photographing at locations that seem to share their own special story. Whether it be an old falling down barn or farmhouse. Her love for old things led her to one of her favorite vintage pieces that she now uses for a prop, a vintage 1963 Shasta camper called Sugar Snap. When she is not out photographing in a field or preparing for her next “glamping trip with her camper, you can find her relaxing with her 2 Labrador fur babies and husband.

How did you tell the father? It was a very sensitive time. We had just lost a pregnancy the month before (along with another one about 9 months prior) AND, we were in the very final days of losing his mom to cancer. It was a time of very mixed emotions. We wanted to celebrate a new pregnancy, but we were grieving all the while. Without being able To jump up and down and scream “I’m pregnant!!!” I simply told him quietly, “I got another positive pregnancy test, so I am going to the Dr. to have it confirmed.” From there, we held tight and prayed. Did you find out the gender of your baby? No! It was a total surprise! We have one 3.5 year old girl that we adore, so we did not have any preference on gender for the second and thought it would be a great surprise and it was!! How has pregnancy changed you as a woman? Pregnancy has surely changed me in a lot of ways. I’ve been pregnant 4 times with 2 of those coming to fruition with healthy living kids. It blows my mind every time how a body is capable of such intricacies and development. It can only be explained (to me) by a very detailed and powerful Creator that is capable of such design. God’s divine craftsmanship at work within a body is an overwhelming thought and beautiful at that. I am in awe of the possibility.

What advice do you wish you had known before getting pregnant? One thing I wish I would have known was how to get through the first month AFTER childbirth. Managing a newborn, hormones, emotions and lack of sleep was really rough the first time around. The second time around was a breeze and total joy, due to the fact that I knew what was coming.

Mel’s specialties include maternity, birth and newborn photography! She absolutely loves capturing the transition into motherhood and utilizing dreamy, natural light. She more recently has fallen in love with dressed up mommy & me sessions in the desert.

JOY

& PETER

How did you find out you were expecting? We decided last July to try for baby #2. Towards the end of July I was pretty sure I was pregnant (I was already feeling the hormones!) so I was surprised to get several negative tests. My husband and I got into a fight right before he left town so after I dropped him off at the airport, I put our toddler to bed and took another test (feeling positive the hormones were a major contributor to our fight!). It was positive. How did you tell the father? Because Peter (my husband) had just left town and was on a flight, I knew I couldn’t reach him so I took a picture of the test and sent it to him with a text saying “maybe this is why I’ve been so crazy lately.” It wasn’t romantic like I had hoped but it definitely was real life! How has pregnancy changed you as a woman? It made me feel more beautiful and powerful in a lot of amazing ways. Watching your body do something that you have no control over, but that it was made to do is life changing. It has made me appreciate my body more (both for what it can do and for how I look - I appreciate being “in shape” more.)

What would you tell someone who just found out they were pregnant? That you have so much JOY ahead of you. Pregnancy is the start of a life-long journey and in a lot of ways, it’s the hardest part. You are going to meet this little person that you have been waiting your whole life to meet (even if you don’t know it) and it is the most special thing you will experience.

What is one thing you find beautiful about being pregnant? The fact that I am growing a little life and giving a gift to my family is a beautiful feeling. And, there are aspects in pregnancy where I find the changes to my body beautiful (let’s be honest, it’s hard to see it at the end when you are just big). PHOTOGRAPHER

CHRISTA TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY 360.798.0339

I love nothing more than making people feel beautiful. I started my own fashion line when I was 17 years old, and soon after I picked up a camera to create images of my work the way I envisioned them. It wasn’t long before I fell in love with the beauty in people’s faces and the emotions that could be captured through my lens. Today my passion is wedding and portrait photography because it allows me to indulge my obsession for fashion while creating work that makes people feel beautiful inside and out. Whether I’m shooting a big wedding with lots of guests and tons of details, or a quiet boudoir session where I get to connect with my client one on one, I am always searching for the best light, the right angle, and the perfect moment so I can bring out the best in everyone.

What are your 3 must-have pregnancy items? 1. The tank tops from Motherhood Maternity! Specifically the ones with the side ruching. I can’t live without them and use them even after pregnancy because they are comfortable and slimming. 2. Saltine crackers - they are what get me through those first months of morning sickness. I’ve seriously eaten so many of those. 3. A workout routine! Nothing makes you feel better when you are big and preggo, than a good workout. It makes you feel like you can do anything when you are in the gym at 8 months pregnant! It also made me feel more sexy and good about myself knowing that I was still putting in effort with my body AND my baby. What are your beauty must-haves while pregnant? 1. Some stylish clothes - something that makes you feel beautiful and sexy. PS - they don’t have to be maternity to be worn during pregnancy. 2. A good skin care routine (because those hormones can do a number on your skin!) 3. A spray tan (or self-tanning lotion). Being tan instantly made me feel more pretty and less “fat”.

HARA & SHAYNE

How did you find out you were expecting? I found out a week before our honeymoon to Thailand! I took about 8 at home tests and they were all Positive! How did you tell the father? I called him and let him know he needed to come home I had something to tell him. He had no clue what I might have to tell him, when he finally got home I ran to out front foot with pregnancy test behind my back and told him guess what while excitingly and nervously showing him my positive pregnancy test, we both cried happy tears instantly. How has pregnancy changed you as a woman? Pregnancy has made me realize how amazing a woman’s body is and what it’s capable of doing. As women we can be very harsh on ourselves. Even though it wasn’t easy because of the amazing beautiful Blessing of being pregnant I’ve learned beauty is not measured in pounds or size my mind set will forever be changed for the better.

Starting with our engagement shoot we wore boots during an outdoor lemonade stand shoot. For our wedding I wore my boots under my dress, our first dance was a two step song to “Then by Brad Paisley, and we taught our guests line dances throughout the night. Our after wedding shoot was taken in the fields of Oklahoma with our boots on once again. We felt that we should keep the outdoor/southern rustic theme going with our maternity shoot since this was something that joined us as a couple and has helped us to build our foundation. Deisy mentioned the McGranahan barn in Yukon, OK and we fell in love with the country-rustic theme once again! We pulled on our boots and headed outdoors for the beautiful day! With being self-conscious during pregnancy, a flowing dress made me feel my best. I wore a denim jacket and a beautiful Stella & Dot necklace to complement the dress!

One thing you find beautiful about being pregnant? I believe it was just being able to have her. We were told 2 days before Christmas that I had low fluid, placenta previa as well as a abruption. The doctor gave us no hope. So I think it’s a constant reminder to me that some people don’t get to do what my body was doing. Even if you’re so done with your pregnancy and you hate every minute of it, remember some people never get to feel those kicks! They never get to do what your body is doing.

Welcome Baby Jade

I

was due April 4th and never thought I would go into labor early since I was a few days overdue with my first child. And definitely not on April Fool’s day! We were actually going to prank our family saying I was going into labor that day. However, I woke up April 1st feeling some mild contractions. I contacted my husband to let him know and that it was NOT an April fools’ joke. I had a doctor’s appointment that morning, so we decided to wait and see if that was real labor. The doctor confirmed that I indeed was in labor, and called in a room at the hospital for us. We dropped our son off with grandma and grandpa, and we were on our way to have a baby girl! It was so surreal! I texted our photographer to let her know what was happening so she could come whenever necessary. I am not one to handle pain very well so I got the epidural pretty quickly after getting settled in our room. My best friend/sister in law came to visit and we just waited for baby to come. I dilated pretty quickly once I went passed 5cm, and then the nurse and then the nurse announced we were getting ready to push! I got so nervous all of a sudden but it was mixed with so much excitement! I pushed for 10 minutes and our beautiful baby Jade was born! While pushing, I I just realized more and more what was happening and couldn’t hold tears back any more. And then as soon as I laid eyes and then held my baby girl, I just started sobbing. The pregnancy was a little rough so I was relieved it was all over start of a

and the start of a new beginning. I had dreamed of having a baby girl since being a little girl myself, so finally having her here with us was just so emotional for me. I just looked at her and snuggled her and tried to realize she was ours forever. I cannot describe the feeling of holding your brand new baby for the very first time, there is so much love in the room. And seeing her dad hold his little girl for the first time is an indescribable feeling too. Jade was looking at us as well and it was magical.

Postpartum advice: first, postpartum depression and baby blues is real. I would say to every new mom to be prepared for that! And don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about it and see what your options are to make life a little bit more manageable. Also prepare freezer meals, it will be so convenient once your baby is here and you don’t have much time or energy to get dinner ready! And don’t hesitate to ask for help from friends and family. Even if it’s just to take a shower or a 5 minute power nap.You might feel weird asking but who doesn’t love snuggling a brand new baby, and you’ll feel so refreshed and ready to conquer to world (or at least to change yet another diaper...). Make time for your husband (and other children). It’s hard on everyone having a new baby ruling the house for a little bit, so make sure you let them know you haven’t forgotten about them. And last, but not least, take time for yourself! Go out and get a mani/pedi, go get some ice cream, go to your favorite store, etc. It might seem impossible because baby might need you for feedings, etc. but even if it’s just for an hour, you need it and deserve it!

First day home with Jade was a bliss. We finally were able to be home all together. My son (almost 3) was so excited to have his sister home and he loved on her all day. They are still very sleepy then, so we just cuddled, took pictures, and try to take it all in.

Even though I have said being a mom is hard work, it is such a beautiful thing. The thing I cherish the most is the love I can see in my children’s eyes. They love me unconditionally, even when I mess up. Seeing how my sweet baby girl lights up when she hears or sees me in the room fills my heart with so much love and gratitude.

W

hen I was told I that I would ultimately need another C-section after being diagnosed with Gestation Diabetes, I was crushed.Wanting a VBA2C more than anything, I thought I had failed. But I had the greatest C-section I possibly could. I had both OB’s from the practice present in the OR. I was also able to have my amazing photographer there, which we were scared might not happen. Along with my husband, I also had a retired midwife from the practice. She was there with me through a previous miscarriage before she retired. Lynn showed up that morning during prep, stayed with me through the whole surgery and helped Jenn get all the amazing shots during surgery! My OB listened to all my concerns and issues I experienced with a previous C-section and did everything she could to make this the best experience possible. Baby was always with me or my husband, I was never alone and baby began breastfeeding right away, It was a beautiful experience and one I’m glad we captured through photos!

What advice do you wish you had known before giving birth? Listen to your “mommy” instinct that you might not think it is there with your first, but it is. I wish I would have listened more to what I felt was right, then what everyone around me was saying was right. It was not always the same thing. What are your 3 must-have birth bag items? My three essential birth bag items were the Boppy pillow, and my own pillow and blanket! It made recovery a little more comfortable while at the hospital. What would you tell someone who just found out they were pregnant? Your birth might not go the way you plan or what you envision for it. But all births are special and something you accomplished!

Ryder is so lucky to have been born into this family. Both Mom and Dad set their sights on a home birth with some of my favorite midwives in Seattle. Camille Fallon I was 40 weeks and 2 days when I gave birth to Miss Camille Fallon. I had predetermined that no matter the circumstances, I would try to relax and enjoy the process. and I did just that. From beginning to end, I truly savored every moment. I trust that because of this I will always be able to look back and remember our birth experience with great joy and no regrets. From the time we found out that we were expecting until the day I delivered, I would say, “I cannot wait for that moment when they lay my brand new baby on my chest.” I longed for and looked forward to that moment throughout my pregnancy. When the time came, the last push passed, and they laid that baby girl on my chest, I just exploded with emotion. It was more than I ever could have imagined and I was so overwhelmed with pure love and happiness. I felt so complete in that moment with my new baby on my chest and husband by my side. Our experience at the hospital was wonderful, but there truly is no place like home, so walking through that door with new baby in tow felt amazing. We got settled in, the baby was asleep, and my husband and I just looked at each other like, “What now?” We quickly learned to sleep while the baby was sleeping. Being first time parents, we may have went a little overboard. We were lucky enough to be blessed with everything we could have needed or wanted for Camille. While every baby is different and a lot has to do with personal preference, we loved and would recommend a Fisher-Price Rock and Play, First Years Sound Machine, and carrier for babywearing to keep baby close and mama’s hands free.

What postpartum advice do you have for women getting ready to have their own newborn? 1.) Do not put too much pressure on yourself during birth – I truly believe that I had such a great (and easy) birth experience because I was relaxed and focused on the goal, meeting my baby girl face to face. 2.) Rest and enjoy your newborn – You will never get back this time. Enjoy getting to know your new baby the first few days/weeks.Your focus should be on recovery and bonding with baby. The rest really can and will wait. 3.) Accept help – It is easier to rest and enjoy your newborn if you accept and/or ask for help. People want to help you. Let them. You will not regret it. Something you wish you’d known before having a new baby? This is a hard one. There are hundreds, make that thousands of little things I have learned since becoming a mother. You can prepare for parenthood as much as you want (seriously, I read 10 books in preparation), but it is all so different once you are living it out day to day. But I think that is the fun of it, figuring things out hands on as you go. For me, a very organized person who likes to be in control, it was all about letting go and enjoying the process. All the preparation and education kind of flew out the window for me when I saw that sweet baby for the first time. Everything just clicks and your motherly instincts kick in. PHOTOGRAPHER

emerson Emerson’s birth was the most physically challenging and emotionally trying, surreal experience I’ve ever had. I was induced at 41 weeks and after 24 hours of arduous labor, with minimal progression, he was delivered via Caesarean Section. We had decided to be surprised by our baby’s gender, which made the moment he entered this world even more incredibly beautiful. I will never forget the tears of joy my husband and I shared as the doctor had him peek over the curtain and announce that we had a (BIG) healthy baby boy! What was the first thing you thought when you held your new baby? My heart was overflowing with so much love. I remember thinking what a beautiful little miracle he was and thanked God for choosing us to be Emerson’s parents. Something you wish you’d known before having a new baby? I wish I had known not to plan so much during my maternity leave. It was jam packed with visits from family and friends, road trips (to see more family), purchasing and moving into our first home, a Sip N’ See, Emerson’s Baptism... the list goes on. We had so much planned and scheduled ahead of time that once we were home and settled I realized we forgot to set aside valuable time for our new family. This cherished time passes too quickly and I wish I had more time just to enjoy the simple moments rather than filling up our calendar before Emerson even arrived.

JACK & JILL What are must-have items for twins? We absolutely LOVE the swings, they are a lifesave when you are caring for one twin and need to keep the other twin moving. Stock up on diapers and wipes, LOTS. Get a Target giftcard and everytime you shop add $10 to it during your pregnancy just for diapers, and invest in a double nursing pillow if you plan on breastfeeding. Advice for expecting moms of twins is to get as much sleep as you can during your pregnancy, rest up. Also recruit helpers for after the babies arrive to help around the house and with any other siblings. During your last month of pregnancy freeze lots of meals ahead of time because you won’t have much time in those first couple months with the new babies to cook.

She is sweet, gentle, beyond patient and has a special talent of being able to coax the babies back to sleep over and over again (for more photos)! I never felt rushed during our sessions and she was super quick with editing and releasing our gallery! I can’t imagine any other photographer coming BOTH to the hospital and our house to make sure every special moment was captured for us. When Kimberly left I knew she had some good images but I never could have imagined the way they turned out! Each photo is better than the next. These pictures have brought me SO much happiness and I will be forever grateful to Kimberly and Simply Beloved Studio for beautifully documenting such a special time in our life. There is no way to express the gratitude our family has for such an amazingly talented photographer! t r a d i t i o n s & t r e at s HOT APPLE CIDER IN THE PARK WITH BABY JACK We used to always drink apple cider and homemade wassail on Christmas, and this year, I wanted to find a homemade version that I could make with the kids. I immediately thought of the crock pot, because I loved the idea of the smell of apple cider filling our house and because it is so easy. We had a mixture of different organic apples in the house: Fiji, Honeycrisp and Gala so I used those. I didn’t have to add any sweetener because those apples were naturally sweet, but any apples would work. If you use more sour apples, you may want to add a little honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar to the final product. The apples and spices smelled heavenly as they cooked down in the slow-cooker and the finished product was delicious. We liked it served warm, but we refrigerated the leftovers in a stainless steel pitcher and it was wonderful cold as well.

Instructions: Wash apples and peel if they aren’t organic. Cut into slices and place in slow cooker. Slice orange into 8 slices and add to slow cooker. Add spices. Pour water into the slow cooker and turn on low for about 8 hours. I prefer to make this before bed and have it ready (and the house smelling incredible) for breakfast. Strain out apples and spices using a cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.

JANUARY 2016

CLARA’S 1ST B I RT H D A Y S H O O T For my daughter’s first birthday shoot, I turned to Pinterest for inspiration, as many moms do. Unfortunately, I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, something styled, but that also had a cake-smash aspect. Since I knew I was going to be the photographer for the shoot, I decided that if something that I liked didn’t exist, that I would create it! spent a Saturday morning at the flower market picking out blooms, and the evening assembling a floral crown, boutonniere and tiny bouquet. We had initially planned to have our daughter, Clara, wear the crown, but as one-year-olds do, she ripped it off immediately so we quickly changed plans. Clara has an egg allergy, so I enlisted the help of my friend and professional baker, Jen Musty of Batter Bakery, to create a beautiful, modern naked cake, free of eggs. Early one Sunday, we trekked into the forested area of the incredible Presidio National Park in San Francisco, and set up shop. After our family shots, we let Clara loose with the cake. She didn’t quite know what to do with it, and never really understood it was for eating, but she sure loved playing with the frosting!
