Clients are booking holidays, weddings, festivals, race days and outdoor events, and they are often more willing to invest in treatments that help them feel polished, confident and ready for the season.

Vernon Kay raises awareness of male skin health

Vernon Kay recently partnered with Christina Louise Aesthetics in Purley, South London, to highlight the importance of men taking care of their skin.

The television and radio presenter filmed and shared clinic owner and registered nurse Christina Murray-Twinn discussing his skin needs and carrying out a facial treatment.

Vernon’s treatment began with a full skin analysis using Opatra’s Dome Pro Skin Analyser to understand exactly what his skin needed. The technology identified enlarged pores, breakout-causing bacteria, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.

This was followed by the Opatra Aqua Spectra Supreme multi-step facial, which combines hydromicrodermabrasion, radio frequency, bipolar RF, hydro oxygen (O2 -H2) jet spray, ultrasonic skin scrubber and cold hammer functions to effectively accelerate the metabolism of cells, using water to lift out impurities and remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin fresh, plump and glowing.

His treatment was finished with a session of LED therapy.

Cannock clinic first in Midlands to debut new CACI facial

Tonic Day Spa in Cannock has become the first clinic in the Midlands to introduce CACI’s new multi-technology facial system, Rejuva Med. The established beauty business has built its reputation on results-driven treatments combined with a personalised client experience, and the new system forms part of its advanced facial offering.

Liquid microneedling is the latest skincare trend to move from online forums into the mainstream, with new search data revealing rapidly growing consumer interest.

Analysis, conducted by beauty and wellness booking platform Fresha, shows Google searches for “liquid microneedling” have increased by 535% over the past year, with 38,000 searches recorded in March 2026 alone. The surge points to rising curiosity around Korean-inspired spicule treatments, which promise microneedling-like effects.

Unlike traditional microneedling, which uses needles to puncture the skin, liquid microneedling products are typically applied as serums or masks.

Microscopic marine sponge derivatives, known as spicules, create surface-level stimulation that helps deliver active ingredients while producing a tingling or prickly sensation.

The trend is gaining traction across Reddit communities such as r/AsianBeauty and r/ SkincareAddiction, alongside Sephora-led TikTok content, where users share visible peeling, redness and before-and-after results.

Hidden admin cost of salon payments highlighted

New data from Phorest has revealed the hidden operational cost of payment administration for UK salons, spas and clinics.

The software provider says the issue lies not in taking payments, but in the manual follow-up, including cashing up, reconciling transactions and resolving tip queries.

Phorest data shows that businesses using fully integrated payment systems spend up to 12 fewer hours a month on endof-day admin. Digital tipping prompts are also linked to an average 25 percent increase in tips, while booking deposits can reduce no-shows by as much as 69%.

The Impossible Pursuit of

50/50

Women in the beauty industry need to stop chasing an equal work/ life balance, says Katie Godfrey.

L

et me say something that might ruffle a few feathers. Balance, the kind we are constantly told to strive for, does not exist. Not the neat, tidy, perfectly divided version anyway and I think the sooner we stop pretending it does, the healthier and more successful we will all be.

As women in the beauty industry, we carry a particular kind of weight. We are running salons and clinics, leading teams, serving clients, raising children, managing homes and somewhere in the middle of all of that, trying to

take care of ourselves. The pressure to do all of it beautifully and simultaneously is immense, but the idea that we should be splitting our time and energy equally across all of it, every single day, is not just unrealistic, it is is setting us up to feel like we are constantly failing.

From experience I know that balance is not a fixed state, it is a constant, fluid adjustment and the sooner we give ourselves permission to embrace that, the better. There are seasons in business when everything demands more of you; 23

a new treatment launch, a team member leaving, a growth phase, a difficult month. During those periods, the business is going to take more of your time and energy. That is not failure, that is reality.

And then there are calmer seasons, when things are ticking along and you naturally have more space to be present at home, with your children, with yourself.

The key is not to divide yourself equally between all things, but to be fully present in whatever you are doing in that moment. This is where boundaries become everything. Set clear times when your team cannot contact you unless it is a genuine emergency. Create windows in your week where you are truly away from the salon. Make the time spent with your children sacred. These things do not happen by accident, they have to be designed and you have to be the one who designs them.

Start working with our cycles, not against them

Here is something we do not talk about enough, even in an industry built almost entirely by and for women… hormones. As women, we are not built to operate at the same pace and energy level every single day of the month. Those are not the days to push through and prove something. Those are the days for the quieter work, the admin, the planning, the reflection.

When we understand our own rhythms and start working with them rather than fighting them, everything shifts. We stop feeling broken for not being “on” every day. We become more strategic, more effective and a whole lot kinder to ourselves in the process.

Self-care sustains everything else

There is something quietly ironic about the beauty industry. We dedicate our careers to helping other people feel good, look after themselves and carve out time for self-care and yet so many of the women running these businesses are last in line for any of it.

As women, we are conditioned to put ourselves last, to pour into everyone else first and take what is left. But if you drop the ball on yourself and burn out, you cannot look after anyone else properly. Not your team, not your clients and, if you’re a mother, not your children.

Self-care is not indulgent, it is how you sustain everything else. This might look like a morning routine that sets you up right or a workout that clears your head. It could mean booking your own treatments in advance so they actually happen, enjoying a meal not eaten standing over the kitchen counter or sleep that is prioritised. These are not treats, they are maintenance.

Guilt is one of the biggest things that holds women back. The guilt of taking time for yourself when there is always more to do, but you are not a better mother because you are running on empty. You are not a better leader because you have sacrificed your own wellbeing. You are a more patient parent, a more inspiring leader and a more creative business owner when you are looked after. Full stop.

The pressure women in our industry feel to do it all and look effortless while doing it is something I want us to collectively release. So many of the salon and clinic owners I work with are fully booked, running busy teams and still feeling like they are not doing enough, because they have been sold the idea that success means having it all perfectly together, all at once.

Real success looks like a business that works without requiring you to destroy yourself. Stop measuring your balance by how evenly you are dividing yourself and start measuring it by how intentional you are being. Are you present when you need to be present? Are you boundaried when you need to be boundaried? Are you showing up for yourself, not just everyone else?

That is the real work; not the impossible pursuit of 50/50 but the honest, daily practice of knowing what matters most right now and giving it everything you have got. Because you can have a busy beauty business and a beautiful family life and take care of yourself.

Just not all at exactly the same time.

Energy is not infinite. You cannot pour from empty and call it sustainable. So before you chase more clients, ask yourself: am I actually taking care of the body that runs this whole operation?

Your relationships

When did you last really show up for your children, not just be physically present, but actually there? There was a time I couldn’t sit and build Lego with my son without my mind being somewhere else entirely, consumed by work I couldn’t switch off from.

When did you last thank your partner for quietly holding everything together while you built your dream? The people closest to us are often the most loyal supporters and the most neglected.

Your money

You want more but how are you managing what you already have? Is there debt you’ve been avoiding? Subscriptions quietly draining your account that, added up, could free an entire day’s work?

Wanting more money while avoiding your current finances is like filling a leaking bucket. Sort the leak first.

Your time

Are you genuinely managing your time or filling the gaps with scrolling and halfstarted tasks? Wasted time compounds and the hours lost to procrastination are exactly the hours you claim not to have.

Here’s something I’d genuinely recommend; start time-recording your tasks because when the temptation to procrastinate kicks in, it helps to know that hoovering your room takes four and a half minutes. Rebooking a client?

45 seconds. Planning your meals for the week and collecting the order? One hour. You think I’m joking, I promise you, I’m not, this is how I run my life.

Your current clients

You want more clients but do the ones you have feel valued? Are you re-booking with care, following up, making them feel like they matter? Growth built on a shaky foundation doesn’t hold.

If you want to reap the harvest, you have to tend the soil you’re standing on. Become the woman who is genuinely capable of handling more, not just hungry for it.

Before you move forward, sit with these two questions:

If I woke up tomorrow with everything I’m currently asking for, would I be ready to handle it well? What in my life right now is quietly showing signs of neglect? Start there.

f you’ve spent any time scrolling through Instagram recently, you’ve probably heard people talking about Trial Reels. Some creators are calling them a game-changer for reach, others are saying they’re a waste of time. As with most social media features, the truth sits somewhere in the middle.

So, what exactly are Trial Reels, what are they designed to do and should hair and beauty professionals be using them? Let’s dive in.

What are Trial Reels?

Trial Reels allow you to test content with people who don’t currently follow you before deciding whether to share it with your existing audience.

Think of it as a focus group for your content.

Instead of posting a Reel directly to your followers, Instagram shows it to a small audience of nonfollowers first. Based on how that audience interacts with the content, Instagram provides performance insights to help you decide whether to publish it to your main audience.

The goal is simple: give creators the confidence to experiment without worrying about how their current followers might react.

Why did Instagram introduce them?

One of the biggest complaints from business owners is the fear of posting the “wrong” thing.

Many salon owners stick to the same content over and over again because they know it feels safe:

• Before and after photos • Client selfies • Appointment availability • Product promotions

While there’s nothing wrong with these posts, they don’t always help you reach new people.

Instagram introduced Trial Reels to encourage experimentation. The platform wants creators to test new ideas, different hooks, educational content, trends, storytelling and personalityled content without feeling like they’re risking engagement from their existing audience.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to share more educational content but worried your audience only wants transformations. Maybe you want to talk directly to camera or show more behind-thescenes moments. Trial Reels allow you to test these ideas before committing to them publicly.

You may reach new audiences

Because Trial Reels are shown to non-followers, they can provide useful insights into what attracts people who haven’t discovered your business yet. This can be particularly valuable if you’re actively trying to grow your local audience.

They can boost your confidence

Let’s be honest: many business owners overthink social media. Having the opportunity to test content can reduce some of that pressure and encourage you to be more creative.

The downsides

As promising as Trial Reels sound, they’re not a magic solution.

They don’t guarantee reach

Just because a Reel is being tested doesn’t mean it will perform well. Content still needs a strong hook, engaging visuals, and a clear message. A weak Reel is still a weak Reel, regardless of how it’s distributed.

They can slow decision making

Some business owners already spend too much time analysing every post. If you’re constantly waiting to see whether a Trial Reel performs before posting, you may end up creating less content overall.

They don’t replace strategy

This is perhaps the most important point. No Instagram feature can fix a lack of strategy. If your messaging isn’t clear, your content isn’t speaking to your ideal client, or your profile doesn’t encourage enquiries, Trial Reels won’t solve those issues.

Should hair & beauty businesses use Trial Reels?

My answer is: yes, but with realistic expectations.

Trial Reels are a useful tool for experimentation, not a replacement for a content strategy.

They’re ideal for:

• Testing new content styles • Trying different hooks • Exploring educational content • Sharing more of your personality • Finding out what attracts new audiences

However, I wouldn’t rely on them as your primary growth strategy.

The salons and beauty businesses seeing the best results on Instagram are still focusing on the fundamentals:

Creating content their ideal client actually • wants to see • Building trust through education and expertise • Showcasing results and client experiences • Using clear calls to action • Posting consistently Use Trial Reels to experiment, learn and refine your content, but remember that bookings don’t come from features alone. They come from creating content that builds trust, demonstrates expertise, and makes it easy for people to choose you. And that’s something no algorithm update can replace.

ED therapy has rapidly moved into mainstream professional use, bridging the gap between non-invasive treatments and results-driven outcomes. As demand rises for treatments with minimal downtime, practitioners are integrating LED into facials, advanced aesthetics and even scalp services, often alongside topical skincare to enhance outcomes.

“Once viewed as a niche add-on within advanced facials, LED therapy is rapidly establishing itself as a core category within professional beauty,” comments David Sneddon of +maskology® (maskology.co.uk). “As clients continue to prioritise non-invasive, results-

How does LED therapy work?

Unique wavelengths of light, each with a clear purpose and that appear as different colours, are incorporated into devices, enabling you to deliver a wide range of skin treatments. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are integrated into panels that can be positioned over different areas of the body, into masks placed over the face or into handheld tools.

“Blue light and red light therapies are not the same. They work at different wavelengths, penetrate the skin at different depths and treat different concerns,” notes CACI’s Lauren Evans (cacibeauty.com).

Blue light, typically around 405–470nm, works closest to the skin’s surface and is best known for targeting the bacteria involved in acne, making it a popular choice for breakout-prone skins. Red light, usually in the 620–700nm range, penetrates more deeply into the dermis, where it is associated with skin rejuvenation benefits such as supporting collagen production, reducing inflammation and improving overall skin quality. Near-infrared (NIR), which sits just beyond visible red light at roughly 700–1100nm, penetrates deeper still and is typically positioned for healing, recovery and calming inflammation in the deeper tissues.

In practice, this means blue is generally used for acne management, while red and near-infrared are more often chosen for anti-ageing, repair and post-treatment recovery. However it’s worth noting that treatment outcomes still depend heavily on device quality, dosing and protocol.

“Emerging clinical evidence suggests these wavelengths may help support healing responses, reduce visible inflammation and improve overall skin recovery following aesthetic procedures,” adds Kate Monteith Ross, member of the Dermalux Clinical Advisory Board (dermaluxledpro.com). “Near-infrared light can be particularly useful when managing compromised or highly inflamed skin. We often see skin become calmer and more resilient over a relatively short period when LED phototherapy is incorporated consistently into treatment plans.”

Farrah Mohamed, neuroscientist and director of Neo Elegance (neoelegance.co.uk), notes that it makes biological sense to integrate LED into sequenced, multi-modality treatment plans.

“Take post-microneedling, for example. The skin is in an active inflammatory state, that’s by design, it’s how the treatment works,” she says.

“Near-infrared light at that stage accelerates the resolution of that inflammation and supports the skin’s natural repair process, without disrupting what the treatment has set in motion.

“LED therapy is rapidly establishing itself as a core category within professional beauty” – David Sneddon.

“After a chemical peel, red light supports barrier recovery and stimulates fibroblast activity at precisely the moment the skin is primed to respond. After skin booster treatments, it helps reduce localised swelling and supports tissue integration. These are not arbitrary combinations. There is a photobiological rationale for each one, and that is how LED should be used, with intention and with understanding.

Trichology patients are also seeing the benefits of LED, as Farrah continues to explain:

“The story in professional hair and scalp practice is earlier, but it is building. Trichologists and forwardthinking salon owners are beginning to explore near-infrared therapy for scalp health, specifically for its ability to improve microcirculation at the follicular level and reduce the kind of chronic scalp inflammation that contributes to conditions like telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia. As the industry’s understanding of scalp-as-skin grows, I think LED will become as standard in the scalp treatment menu as it already is in the skin clinic. This is something they already to in Korean skin clinics.”

Why LED is experiencing a resurgence While LED is not new, its resurgence is being driven by improved device technology, stronger clinical understanding and consumer demand for non-invasive results.

“LED has reached an inflection point in professional practice,” says Farrah. “We are past the era of novelty, practitioners are now asking for irradiance data, peer-reviewed evidence and structured protocols before they invest…

When you understand the photobiology, LED is not an optional extra – it is one of the most powerful tools in a modern treatment room.”

Earlier scepticism around poor-performing devices is also being addressed. Newer professional-grade systems offer greater accuracy and sufficient energy output to trigger biological responses, bringing the technology more in line with research.

Plus, with celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Margot Robbie and Kendall Jenner noted as fans of LED therapies, awareness amongst consumers is growing.

“According to the Global Wellness Tech Trend Report 2026, 34% of consumers globally have used or trialled red-light therapy, with 86% adopting the technology within the past two years,” shares David Sneddon. “In the UK, 26% of adults have already tried it, underlining growing domestic demand for advanced wellness technologies and professional aesthetic treatments.”

Plus combing the technology with products enables the delivery of personalised treatments to target concerns discussed during consultation. “One of the simplest ways to elevate an LED treatment protocol is through the integration of targeted skincare serums designed to support individual skin concerns before and after treatment,” suggests David.

Training, compliance and device selection Despite its accessibility, LED should not be considered a simple treatment. Professional delivery requires a solid foundation in skin science, photobiology and treatment planning.

“While LED phototherapy is often marketed as a simple treatment, professional application requires a strong understanding of skin health, wavelength selection, treatment planning, contraindications and combination protocols,” says Joanne Quinn Geoghegan.

From a compliance perspective, practitioners should complete accredited training and ensure their devices meet appropriate safety standards.

Choosing the correct equipment is critical.

Farrah Mohamed advises: “Not all LED devices are equal and I think it is important to be clear about why.

It comes down to three things: irradiance, wavelength accuracy and protocol. Without sufficient irradiance, the energy density delivered to the skin, you are not triggering a cellular response. You are simply shining light. Without accurate wavelengths, you are not targeting the biological mechanisms the research is based on. And without a structured protocol, even a good device will produce inconsistent results.

“Before purchasing any LED device, I would encourage practitioners to ask for irradiance output and appropriate safety certification. If a supplier cannot provide those things clearly, that tells you something important.”

Treatment protocols and aftercare

Consistency is key to achieving results with LED therapy. A course of treatments, often multiple sessions per week initially, are typically recommended to build cumulative benefits.

“The reason we see stars like Victoria Beckham using these masks religiously every single day is simple: consistency is the bridge between a good result and a transformative one,” suggests facialist and aesthetician Eavanna Breen (eavannabreen.ie).

Lauren Evans adds: “Visible results can often be seen after just one treatment, with the skin appearing brighter, fresher, smoother and more rejuvenated.

However, the best outcomes are achieved through a course of treatments, as the benefits build progressively over time. For best results, we recommend two to three treatments a week, for 1015 treatments followed by monthly maintenance.”

Aftercare is generally straightforward, another reason why LED is an attractive option for clients.

“One of LED’s real strengths in a professional setting is how well clients tolerate it,” says Farrah Mohamed. “There is no downtime, no barrier disruption, no peeling. Post-treatment guidance is straightforward: avoid strong active ingredients for 12–24 hours and apply broad-spectrum SPF as part of the morning routine. Where LED follows a more intensive treatment such as microneedling, aftercare follows the primary treatment protocol.”

Salons can further enhance outcomes through tailored homecare recommendations, supporting results between appointments. “Lightweight, hydrating formulations can be incorporated into treatment protocols to help comfort and replenish the skin, while brightening and balancing serums can be recommended to support radiance and overall skin condition as part of an ongoing skincare routine,” David Sneddon recommends.

“For example, hyaluronic acid serums can be used to support hydration-focused facial protocols, while vitamin C formulations offer an ideal retail recommendation for clients looking to improve radiance and glow between LED appointments.

Niacinamide-based serums can help support clients concerned with excess oil and unevenlooking skin tone, while squalane formulations provide nourishment for clients experiencing dryness or compromised skin comfort.”

In today’s results-driven, knowledge-led treatment environment, LED therapy is no longer a superficial add-on but a clinically relevant modality that rewards precision, consistency and training. As device technology advances and practitioners deepen their understanding of photobiology, its role within professional protocols will only strengthen. Why are supplements becoming such an important conversation within the professional salon industry?

RS: I think consumers are becoming far more aware that beauty isn’t just about what you look on the outside like it’s also about supporting the body from within. With so much information at our fingertips we’re seeing women, especially, becoming increasingly interested in their energy, stress, sleep, hormonal changes and longevity, because all of those things can impact your skin and hair so it makes sense that they’re looking to their beauty expert for advice.

Hair and beauty professionals are often the people clients speak to most openly, so naturally these conversations come up in salons and clinics.

and they want to feel looked after during their treatment but with some top tips to take home with them too.

How can beauty and hair professionals talk about supplements responsibly?

RS: The most important thing is to stay within your scope of expertise. Professionals can absolutely talk about wellbeing and the role nutrition can play in supporting healthy skin or hair, but they should avoid making medical claims or suggesting supplements can treat or cure conditions.

I always think the best approach is education rather than prescription. It’s about saying: “Here’s what this ingredient is generally known for,” rather than “This will definitely fix your problem.”

It’s also important to remind clients that supplements are designed to support a healthy lifestyle, they’re not a replacement for medical advice, a balanced diet or professional healthcare. However, we do know that people are confused on what to take, so any advice from beauty and hair professionals to help cut through the clutter is helping to give customers great service.

What should professionals look for in a quality supplement?

RS: Transparency is key.

Professionals should look for brands that clearly state ingredient levels, sourcing and the science behind their formulations. You will be surprised at how many brands don’t do this!

are meaningful rather than simply trendy. Sometimes products include fashionable ingredients at levels too low to have any real benefit. We see this a lot. When people say they are taking magnesium to help them sleep, when we look at what they are taking, they often have bought the wrong type of magnesium or at a level that really won’t make any difference.

Cheaper products do not mean better when it comes to supplements!

For beauty professionals, trust matters enormously. Recommending supplements should feel like an extension of client care, so choosing reputable brands with clear messaging and responsible claims is essential and ideally made in the UK where our regulations are tighter than most other countries.

Are clients becoming more educated about ingredients?

RS: Definitely. Clients are researching ingredients more than ever before, whether that’s collagen, biotin, NMN, adaptogens or vitamins linked to energy and skin health. But there’s also a huge amount of misinformation online, which is why trusted beauty professionals can play such an important role in simplifying the conversation and helping clients understand what may realistically support them.

Consumers don’t necessarily want complicated science explained to them; they want honesty and realistic expectations.

How can salons or clinics introduce supplements without sounding sales-driven?

I think it works best when supplements are positioned as part of a broader wellbeing conversation rather than

a hard sell. For example, if a client is talking about feeling tired, stressed, menopausal or concerned about hair or skin quality, that opens the door naturally to discuss nutrition and supplements that may complement their routine.

The key is authenticity. Clients can tell when something is genuinely recommended because it aligns with their concerns versus simply being another retail product on a shelf.

What trends are you seeing within beauty supplements right now?

RS: We’re definitely moving beyond “quick fix” beauty supplements into more sophisticated wellness support.

Women are increasingly interested in healthy ageing, energy, cognitive wellbeing, sleep support and stress resilience, because all of those areas affect how we look and feel.

There’s also growing demand for formulations that feel premium, science and expert led that easily integrate into everyday life.

Ultimately, consumers want products that support vitality and feeling good in their own skin at any age.

Any final advice for beauty professionals discussing supplements with clients?

RS: Keep the conversation informed and realistic. Beauty professionals don’t need to become nutritionists or doctors, but they do have an opportunity to guide clients responsibly by encouraging healthy habits and credible products.

Sometimes simply listening to a client and understanding how they’re feeling is the most valuable part of the conversation. Supplements should support that wider journey, not replace it.

Summer is finally here, and for us nail technicians, that usually means two things: holiday nails and wedding nails.

out of fashion. Think ocean blues, shimmering mermaid effects, shell details, sandy textures and wave-inspired nail art.

It’s one of the busiest and most creative times of the year in the salon because summer nails can be as subtle or as bold as our clients want them to be.

Of course, not every client wants bright colours. Pastel shades remain a timeless summer option, especially butter yellow, soft peach, baby blue and delicate lilac. These colours give a fresh seasonal look while remaining elegant and wearable for everyday life.

As soon as the temperatures start rising, clients begin thinking about sunshine, holidays abroad, weddings, garden parties and special occasions.

When it comes to holiday nails, bright colours always make a comeback. Neon pinks, vibrant corals, electric blues, lime greens and sunshine yellows are popular choices every year. Some clients love a full neon manicure, while others prefer something a little softer with just a pop of colour.

Neon fades continue to be a favourite because they instantly create that summer feeling without needing complicated nail art.

Tropical-inspired designs are also incredibly popular, including palm leaves, hibiscus flowers, exotic fruits and sunset-inspired colour blends.

For clients heading to the coast, seaside-inspired nails never go

Mediterranean-inspired designs are also becoming increasingly popular, with beautiful blue-and-white tile patterns inspired by destinations such as Greece and Spain.

Sophisticated wedding styles Summer is also wedding season and bridal nails deserve special attention. While trends come and go, some styles remain favourites year after year.

French manicures continue to be one of the most requested bridal looks, but modern brides often choose softer versions. Baby Boomer nails, also known as French fade nails, remain incredibly popular because they create a beautiful, elegant transition between pink and white without the harsh smile line of a traditional French manicure.

Soft French designs are another popular choice, offering a delicate and sophisticated look that complements any wedding dress without stealing attention from it.

When it comes to bridal nail art, less is often more. Delicate lace details, fine white line work, subtle shimmer, pearl effects and tiny hand painted flowers are all beautiful options.

These details add a touch of luxury while keeping the overall look timeless and elegant.

Nails that fit the holiday

Holiday nails aren’t just about colour. I always encourage clients to think about what they’ll actually be doing on holiday. If they’re planning to spend two weeks relaxing by the pool, they might happily wear longer nails than usual, but if they’re heading off on an active holiday packed with walking, sports or outdoor activities, a shorter length is often the more practical choice.

The best holiday nails are the ones that fit the holiday as well as the outfit.

Protecting products in a heatwave As nail technicians, we often spend so much time helping our clients cope with the summer heat that we forget our products can struggle too. Higher temperatures can make gels noticeably thinner and more difficult to control, especially during long, busy salon days.

If your salon doesn’t have air conditioning, try keeping your gel pots and jars on a cool pack between clients. It’s a simple trick, but it can make a huge difference. Working with smaller amounts of product, keeping lids closed and avoiding direct sunlight on your nail desk can also help keep your gels behaving themselves during a heatwave.

Make your work stand out

Summer also brings plenty of opportunities for beautiful nail photography. If you’re photographing your work for social media, don’t be afraid to add a few seasonal props to help tell the story. Seashells, sunglasses, miniature cocktail umbrellas or even a sprinkle of bath salts to mimic sand can instantly create a summer feel and make your images stand out.

Whether your clients are preparing for a beach holiday, a destination wedding or simply want to embrace the brighter side of summer, this season offers endless inspiration.

From bold tropical neons to timeless bridal elegance, summer nails allow us to showcase creativity while helping our clients feel confident for their special moments.

In the know about P

rofessional nail technicians across England, Wales and Scotland are preparing for significant regulatory changes affecting nail products containing Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO).

This commonly used ingredient acts as a photo initiator, helping gel systems cure effectively under UV and LED lamps while supporting colour stability and preventing yellowing.

However, following updated safety classifications in Europe[1], TPO has been identified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant based on laboratory data.

Although scientific opinion has suggested it can be safe at limited concentrations[2], legislators have taken a precautionary approach.

As a result, the UK is introducing restrictions aligned with wider European changes[3], and nail professionals must now prepare for a phased withdrawal.

Key dates for England, Wales & Scotland Under the Cosmetic Products Regulation amendments, two deadlineswill directly impact your day-to-day practice:

15th August 2026: Manufacture of nail products containing TPO is prohibited.

14th February 2027: Sale, purchase and professional use of TPO containing products must stop. From this point, nail technicians should not use TPO-based systems in treatments, even if stock remains.

For context, stricter timelines already apply in Northern Ireland, where the ban has been in place since September 2025, alongside across the EU.

TPO What this means for your treatments

While this is a regulatory shift, it is not a ban on gel nails. Products formulated without TPO remain fully compliant and available.

That said, the reformulation of professional systems may affect application, curing and finish.

As Charlotte Lowe, Education Brand Manager at OPI, explains:

“TPO is a chemical photo initiator that plays a key role in gel systems, supporting fast curing under UV light, strong adhesion to the natural nail and long-lasting colour stability… when this ingredient is removed… application technique becomes even more important.”

This means technicians should expect slight adjustments to working methods, such as thinner application, strict adherence to curing times and use of brand-specific lamps. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines and follow any additional training required.

Reformulation: challenges & opportunities

For manufacturers, removing TPO is far from a simple ingredient swap. Giorgia Cappella, Head of Education at The GelBottle Inc. (thegelbottle.com), explains: “Photo initiators like TPO play a significant role in supporting efficient polymerisation, cure speed and overall product stability… Every reformulation requires extensive testing to ensure the product continues to meet professional expectations.”

“Ahead of the UK TPO regulations, we are taking a phased approach to reformulation – ensuring products are not only compliant, but still deliver the professional results our customers expect,” adds Giorgia. All TGB Gel Colours are TPO free, alongside a wide selection of BIAB™ and Hard BIAB™ colours.

Similarly, Michael Henson, founder of HONA, highlights the technical complexity: “The biggest challenges… are maintaining the non-yellowing finish… and achieving reliable cure performance… brands often need to re-balance the system.”

HONA’s (homeofnailart.com) professional gel system has always been completely TPO-free as well as free of HEMA, HPMA and IBOA. The range includes TrueBuild, TrueSculpt and TrueFoundation gels along with Gel Polish collections in a wide spectrum of colours and finishes.

The Halo collection of formulations, available from Pure Nails (purenails.co.uk), are also TPO-free including Halo Easibuild, Halo Polibuild and Halo Acrylic Plus along with the extensive collection of colours in the Halo Gel Polish and Gel Polish Plus ranges.

For technicians, this transition presents both a learning curve and a professional opportunity. As HONA note:

“Regulatory changes like this are not something to fear, but an opportunity… to improve standards, safety and ingredient awareness.”

OPI’s Charlotte Lowe agrees that these regulatory changes provide opportunity, saying:

“As the industry evolves in line with regulatory changes, these updates also present a great opportunity for professionals to refresh their skills and expand their knowledge.”

In line with the new regulations, OPI (uk.wella.professionalstore.com) is launching Super Strong, a TPO-free IntelliGel™ Base Coat, joining Intelli Gel™ Super Base, Intelli Gel™ shades, all Intelli Gel™ top coats and all GELevate™ 4-in-1 Builder shades as TPO and HEMA free. Super Strong will replace the current GelColour Stay Strong Base Coat. Super Base Coat will continue to be available in the UK and Ireland.

Compliance, insurance & best practice

From an ABT perspective, compliance is essential. While you may legally hold existing stock, continuing to use TPO products beyond February 2027 could affect your insurance cover.

ABT guidance is clear: transition to TPO-free systems as soon as possible rather than waiting for the final deadline.

It’s also your responsibility to ensure all products you use are compliant. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) remain the most reliable way to check ingredients – TPO may appear under several names or its CAS number (75980-60-8).

Talking to clients about TPO

Clients may already be aware of ingredient bans through media coverage. Clear, confident communication is key.

Explain that changes are industry-led and safety-driven and reassure them that professional products remain safe and regulated. Transparency in your product choices and training demonstrates professionalism and builds trust.

To stay compliant and protect both your business and clients, now is the time to take proactive steps. Begin by auditing your current kit to identify any products that contain TPO, using Safety Data Sheets to confirm ingredients where needed.

Speak with your supplier about TPO-free alternatives and start transitioning your services early, allowing time to familiarise yourself with any differences in formulation or curing.

The phased removal of TPO from nail products marks a significant moment for the UK nail industry, prompting both regulatory compliance and professional evolution. While changes to product formulations may require adjustments in technique and product choice, they also reinforce a broader shift towards transparency, safety and higher standards across the sector.

For nail technicians in England, Wales and Scotland, staying informed, adapting early and investing in education will be key to maintaining both client trust and business continuity.

By approaching these changes proactively, you’ll not only remain compliant but also strengthen the quality, credibility and long-term sustainability of your nail services.

ABT accredited educator Natalia Belc-Dobrzynska (@natalia.bee.nails) shares how to create her beautiful seashell-inspired nail art.

Step #1: After prepping the nails as

usual, apply one coat of your favourite gel polish base colour. I used Nailac Glammy Pink Base. Do not cure.

Step #2: Using contrasting light and

dark gel polish colours, apply a few dots of colour onto the wet base.

Step #3: Using vertical and horizontal

strokes, drag these dots to mix the colours into a satisfactory effect, now’s the time to cure.

Step #4: Add some shiny elements; it

could be foil, glitter, powder or glitter gel.

Step #5: Apply matte top coat over the entire nail.

Step #6: Enhance the shell-like design by

adding ridges using a no-wipe builder gel or shine top coat, starting from the free edge and dragging towards the cuticles. Freeze each line to prevent it from spreading. Cure everything for 30 seconds.

Step #7: Now you can add extra elements

like rhinestones, pearls or other decorations.

Step #8: Finish the design with small dots of no

wipe top coat to make the shell look more realistic.
