he search for a wedding guest outfit can be fun but also stressful and expensive, particularly with the sheer amount of weddings back in the diary.

Fortunately, fashion rental has seen a fantastic boom over the last few years, offering customers the chance to rent a show-stopping outfit for a lower cost. And, if you’re on a mission to shop more sustainably, then renting an outfit this wedding season instead of buying is a brilliant option. With the help of digital apps and online platforms, you can wear your designer favourites from RIXO to The Vampire’s Wife and Chanel. Not only is it more sustainable, it works wonders for those wanting to try something new and discover new designers without having to make a lifelong and hefty summed purchase. From dresses, to handbags and designer shoes, these platforms have everything to offer. So, how to know which app and platform is for you?

By Rotation By Rotation is an inclusive, community-powered platform that allows all users to lend and rent their designer items at a peer-to-peer level. They reported their bridal selection had grown during lockdown, with searches for wedding wear up 1200% since 2020. Many brides are even choosing to rent their own wedding dresses as their ‘something borrowed’. Created by female founder Eshita Kabra-Davies in 2019, By Rotation was the world’s first ‘social fashion’ app. Eshita is on a mission to transform the way we consume fashion, empowering likeminded individuals with the motto, “what’s mine is yours.” By Rotation currently have over 35,000 items to choose from and rent, including Cecile and Shrimps. There are many gems to discover

and rent. Simply download the app, create a free account, and explore other users’ wardrobes to rent. All T&Cs are clearly stated when it comes to cleaning and looking after your item.

Hurr With the desire to end fast-fashion, founder Victoria Prew created Hurr in 2018. Hurr aims to empower women to extend the lifespan of their wardrobe, one rental at a time. Hurr allows you to rent a range of designer pieces directly from its members, as well as from its own managed stock. Fast forward four years, it is now a tech-first platform with thousands of renters and lenders building a smart solution for fashion. From Ganni and Reformation dresses to Fendi and Jacquemus bags, they have it all. You can rent an item for as little or long as you like. Download the app Hurr for free to browse their offerings and get some inspiration for your wedding outfit.

Onloan If you really like renting and end up doing it frequently, we would recommend the platform Onloan. Founded by two friends, Tamsin Chislett and Natalie Hasseck, Onloan is the go-to source of incredible clothes for a generation of women who are tired of the high street but are priced out of luxury. Their platform allows you to create a membership, with two options available. You can rent two designer items for the whole month for £69, or four designer items for the whole month for £99. What’s more, you can pause your account at any time and do not need to worry about any cleaning or damage costs. Featuring wedding-worthy designers such as Alexa Chung and Joseph, there are many options to choose from. This is definitely worth giving a go if you like trying new designers, enjoy changing up your wardrobe…and have plenty of weddings in the diary.

Here are just a few of the many benefits you can start taking advantage of today:

ho knew that one of the most powerful ways to benefit every part of your body, from your brain down to your ankles, is to utilize a skill that most of us learned at just a year old? Whilst the human ability of walking has allowed mankind to survive changing landscapes, climates and environments for years, it is not solely beneficial for transportation; instead, with every step you take being accompanied by a wide range of scientifically-proven physical and mental benefits. With it being free, easy to incorporate into your everyday routine, and simple enough for any ablebodied person to do, there is no reason to not take advantage of some of the tremendous benefits that come with it. Here are just a few of the many benefits you can start taking advantage of today:

1.Walking will help you burn calories and keep a healthy weight

Whilst many people look down on walking as a form of exercise compared to running or cycling, instead of choosing to spend £30 a month on a packed-out gym membership or purchase expensive bicycles, many different research projects have shown that regular walking can help reduce belly fat and improve the human body’s response to insulin.

Adding this activity into your daily routine can help improve the

quality of your sleep With the flexibility to plan different walking routes, see different sights and set your walking pace for each different walk, the possibilities to sustain this calorie-burning are endless. Moreover, daily walking increases the human metabolism by burning extra calories and by preventing muscle loss; with Harvard University research finding that walking helps combat the effects of weightpromoting genes, deeming it as ‘the closest thing we have to a wonderdrug.’

2.Walking reduces stress and improves mood A glass of wine or some chocolate can sometimes seem like a good short-term fix to long-term stress, but walking offers an easy and free strategy that

offers the same perk. Research found that just 10 minutes of walking can lift your spirits, heavily supported recently by the surge in walking during the Covid-19 pandemic. This positive effect can be heightened by walking through a nice route filled with greenery, or enjoying your strolls with a partner. Furthermore, research has shown that regular walking modifies your nervous system so that you’ll experience a decrease in anger, as well as releasing exerciseinduced endorphins to leave you feeling better than ever.

3.Walking improves sleep Adding this easily accessible activity into your daily routine can help improve the quality of your sleep by boosting the effects of melatonin, the sleep hormone, helping you feel better rested to tackle the rest of what life has to offer.

4.Walking improves the strength of your immune system and overall health

Many people today are looking for ways to improve their immunity, and research has shown that walking in particular increases the number of immune cells within our body to attack pathogens, ramping up our immune system. In addition, if you do get sick, walking has been known to improve the overall health, thus shortening the recovery period. Research has also found that walking helps to lower blood pressure and lower the risk of future heart problems.

It’s fair to say we’re coconuts about it. £11.20 for 75ml, £19.60 for £150ml

Years of the Hampshire Food Festival

ampshire Fare, the county food group, is bringing back the award-winning Hampshire Food Festival this summer with a programme of events for food lovers running across Hampshire from 1st-31st July 2022. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, says: “We are looking forward not only to the return of the Hampshire Food Festival, but celebrating, after a break of two years, the Festival’s postponed 20th anniversary.” Hampshire Fare established the very first Hampshire Food Festival back in 2000. Back then, as one of the first tranche of food festivals being held countrywide, it helped to make a significant contribution to the renaissance of interest in local food and drink. Hampshire Food Festival also quickly achieved an ambition and scale not seen elsewhere. At a time when most food festivals were based around a market format and held for one day, Hampshire’s ran for a fortnight during the summer and included walks, talks, farm tours, tastings and cookery demonstrations. This ignited interest, and by 2008 it had evolved into a month of activities during July, encouraging locals and visitors to explore Hampshire’s countryside, villages and market towns and discover its abundance of food

and drink. Some of our greatest chefs and cooks contributed to the Festival over the years, holding demonstrations, giving talks or writing the foreword to the Festival programme. The impressive roll-call includes Raymond Blanc, Gino D’Acampo, Rose Elliott, Sophie Grigson, Ainsley Harriott, Shaun Hill, Mark Hix, Prue Leith, James Martin and Gordon Ramsay. In this year’s Festival events programme, MasterChef winner and Hampshire local Jane Devonshire writes: “The message to try local is a message which truly resonates at the moment. Choosing local supports your neighbours, considers the environment and strengthens the local economy. Just as important, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s produce is among the very best on offer across the country and, indeed, the world.

Hampshire Food Festival celebrates one of the great pleasures in life: food and drink with a relaxed carnival atmosphere. This year this popular Festival continues to feature a wide variety of tasty events, such as tours of breweries, distilleries, farms and vineyards, masterclasses and workshops, festivals, fetes and markets, pop-up dining experiences, cookery demonstrations, and more. A few highlights from this year’s programme include: Cocktails and Canapés with MasterChef winner Jane Devonshire at Gorilla Spirits in Upton Grey; baking masterclasses with South Downs Sourdough in Cheriton; Food Fare at Westlands Farm Shop near Wickham; Southsea Food Festival; Shakespeare in the Garden at The Ship Inn, Langstone; a Summer Party at Hattingley Valley vineyard featuring Southsea’s Grate Catering; and Raimes Sparkling Wine Summer Courtyard, Tichborne.

Tracy Nash comments: “Hampshire Food Festival celebrates one of the great pleasures in life: food and drink with a relaxed carnival atmosphere and opportunities to discover new tastes and experiences. The Festival continues to provide what it set out to achieve when it was set up in 2000: a great opportunity for independents to raise their profile and a unique way for everyone to enjoy and appreciate Hampshire’s heritage, culture, and sense of place. We are inviting everyone to join the celebration, and how welcome that will be after the past two years.” Hampshire Food Festival’s programme of events can be found on the Hampshire Fare website:, with free copies of the print programme available to pick up from various farm shops, village stores, pubs, restaurants and hotels. Notebook Summer Skincare By Sophie Paravicini

What would Gatsby be using 100 years on? In 2022 we should officially be closing the door to out-of-date, traditional social norms on how men should and shouldn’t behave when it comes to beauty or ‘grooming’. I have four-bathroom cabinet must-haves that will leave you feeling and looking summer-ready in seconds. Whether you’re spending the summer in Southsea or in St Tropez.

1. Sarah Chapman Rapid Radiance Cleanse Radiance Cleanser and Mask £43.00 from

Starting with cleansing (washing) your face morning and evening with Sarah Chapman’s Rapid Radiance Cleanse. Apply two pumps when you’re in the shower as your daily face wash or, alternatively, onto dry skin to act as a detoxifying mask to battle blackheads and breakouts. The lactic and salicylic acid will also prevent any ingrown hairs post-shaving and leave a dull complexion looking energised thanks to vitamin C. If you’re ever in town, pop into Sarah Chapman for their ‘Men’s Facial’ because if it’s good enough for the men of SW3 it’s good enough for the men of GU32 and P08!

The people at Ameliorate know what they’re doing when it comes to getting us beach ready! Now one thing that comes hand in hand with Brits and summer is minimal clothing the second it becomes slightly warmer than usual. However, in turn, this also means exposing our bodies possibly earlier than one would have hoped. However, do not fear because there is something magical called the Transforming Body Lotion from AMELIORATE. No one wants dry, flaky, bumpy skin, so lactic acid works to gently remove dead cells and refine the appearance of pores, e.g. great for body acne. The lightweight, fast-absorbing texture means you can apply it post-shower even if you only have 2 minutes before you need to get clothes on and out of the door. The people at AMELIORATE know what they’re doing when it comes to getting us beach body ready - they even have a shower gel. 4. Dr Jart. Cicapair™ Tiger Grass Calming Gel Cream £28.00 from

If you’re suffering from redness and irritation, then reach for the Calming Gel Cream from Dr Jart. Apply this ultra-light gel onto clean skin in the morning and evening for instant hydration and to combat any complexion crisis. We need our skin barrier to be strong and resilient to prevent any future inflammation, and with the blend of four probiotic ferments, this is exactly how your skin will be left feeling. This product is like a glass of water for the skin, leaving you feeling quenched and instantly more comfortable.

2. Ross J. Barr Adrenal Calm Formula £32.00 from

It’s all well and good looking our best, but if we’re not feeling it internally, then we’re never going to be 100%. Not that anyone is ever truly at 100%, but one man who can certainly try and help you get there is Ross J Barr. I have been taking his Adrenal Calm supplements for over a month now, and I don’t want to ever go through life without them again. This calming supplement combines rhodiola with vitamins B5 & B6 to help support the adrenal glands to prevent adrenal stress & adrenal fatigue whilst supporting our nervous system and mental performance. They have also traditionally been used to alleviate the symptoms associated with anxiety. The chill pill of all chill pills.

3. AMELIORATE Transforming Body Lotion £8.50 from

The lactic and salicylic acid will leave a dull complexion looking energised thanks to vitamin C.

spott and herbert:

The story so far... By Joanna Eastbury-Jepson After completing a foundation course in Somerset, where I originally hail from, I studied illustration at Cambridge. I went on to work for the wonderful London-based agency Eastwing, illustrating for many magazines and books in the process, including Country Living and Waitrose Food Illustrated. One of my proudest achievements from this time was finding an album sleeve/cover I had illustrated for Andy Coleman in an HMV store in Madison Square Garden! In 2004, I gave birth to my wonderful son and spent my early years of motherhood making hand-printed greeting cards, an activity which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. In fact, my company name, ‘Spott & Herbert’, originates from a small drawing that my son created that he named Spotty Herbert. A few tweaks later, Spott & Herbert was born. Having always been fascinated by typography and printmaking, I have never been short of inspiration and ideas for the designs and pieces that I have produced and have been able to

develop the necessary skills to bring them to life. A fortuitous chance meeting led to my inclusion on the books at Pearl & Black, amongst many other talented makers, to supply their fantastic client list. I was fortunate enough to supply Liberty, Paperchase and Fortnum & Mason, as well as being shortlisted for the most engaging print at the G F Smith’s The Paper Awards. The products I produce represent very simple statements or designs on a carefully chosen palette of muted colours, with the occasional pop of neon. Each design has its own hand-stretched silk screen, which is made from scratch using drawing

inspiration! fluid and screen filler. With this method being perfect for the loose, sketchy nature of my images, it allows me to paint freely to execute these designs. Don’t be fooled, however; sometimes, the simplest of images have taken the most attempts to get just right! I use organic, sustainable Fare Wear cotton clothing wherever possible, whilst my cards and paper goods are typeset by hand and individually printed using a vintage Adana letterpress with

plates made for myself by the marvellous Lyme Bay Press, based on the Isle of Wight, onto 100% recycled cotton, with each paper item purchased supporting WaterAid. None of this would be possible without my wonderful husband, who tirelessly delivers me to and scoops me up from different places every weekend, rain or shine. He also does his best not to show too much despair as I add another ridiculously heavy concrete or marble slab for ‘display purposes’ to every increasing load! You can find me and my products at:, as well as pretty much all the brilliant Love Southsea Markets and events, We Create Markets around Portsmouth and Southsea, Traders Keep events and The Waterside Market at beautiful Port Solent, alongside some other glorious makers - a wonderful community I am extremely pleased to belong to.

Upcycle with bright hues

This summer, it’s time to spruce up your garden space and create an area you really love. In recent years, gardens have proved invaluable, with many people across the country relishing in their outdoor spaces. Gardens are important for our well-being and can be a sanctuary of peace and joy. Not just that, but they shape how we entertain and relax with our loved ones. As the days get warmer and we gravitate outside, Beautiful South is here to give you some inspiration. From garden furniture pieces and accessories to lighting and plants, you can get your outside space looking stylish just in time for summer.

Statement umbrellas

Ideal for shaping shade on hot summer days and as a centrepiece to your garden, umbrellas are a brilliant way to elevate your outdoor area and add statement furniture to your patio. East London Parasol Company has an array of gorgeous offerings, all of which are flamboyant, luxurious and unique showstoppers. From peach and lilac to lime and ruby, they have a number of bright coloured and stylish designs to create a dynamic garden space.

Create a cosy corner in your garden with a warming firepit, perfect for summer evenings hosting parties and get-togethers. Is there anything better than gathering around a fire with family

If you’re lacking colourful blooms, buds and flowers in your garden from little green space, then we would recommend introducing colour in other ways. This summer, introduce lustrous, jewel-like colours including citrine oranges, fuchsias and sapphire blues for a burst of excitement. Painting is a great place to start! And, if you are looking to upcycle old tables and chairs, benches, or even a garden wall, then Farrow and Ball have an array of hues to choose from to bring some fun to your garden.

Outdoor shelves

There is no better time to invest in some chic garden furniture that transforms your outdoor space. Use an outdoor shelf as you would indoors by storing pretty garden tools, pots and plants as a display feature. Place it against the house exterior wall where it is most likely to receive the most shelter, and stand out. We are currently loving String Furniture’s outdoor storage solution, the Outdoor Strong System, with galvanised shelves that can withstand any weather and add a touch of stylish functionality to your garden.

Mural wall

Try creating a patterned statement wall if you have a smaller garden space or an area of your garden you wish to create as its own little hub. Via tiling, you can create a beautiful mural and statement wall. You can give your patio, terrace or outdoor space the perfect finish with Ca’Pietra’s Exterior Stone and Tile selection. They offer a whole host of tiles in porcelain, limestone and sandstone in a variety of patterns and styles. Simply have a browse on their website, and order up to six free cut tile samples for some serious inspiration.

With plant the perfect finish. pots and hanging plants, you can create an oasis of nature in your garden. Introducing plant palms and banana leaf ornamental shrubs can create an exotic space for you to enjoy. We’re lucky enough to have some brilliant garden centres in the local area, including Architectural Plants in Pulborough, Haskins Forest Lodge and Stansted Park.

Invest in furniture

Instead of shifting mismatched kitchen chairs into the back garden, ensure your space is as inviting as possible and invest in some furniture that will last you for years to come. Whether your space is better set for outdoor dining, large luxurious bean bags, or for a comfortable corner sofa, being happy and enjoying your garden is the most important thing. Anthropologie and Cox and Cox have some gorgeous, eye-catching options in their summer 2022 range. A few chic scatter cushions will add a pop of colour, while a large rug will pull it all together nicely. We would always recommend having woollen throws hanging from sofas or chairs for an extra touch. Left page: image Right page above image, left inset image

If you want to create your own paradise in the garden, there’s a quick and easy way to make your garden magical instantly: lighting! From fairy lights to solar-powered illuminations, you can brighten up your outdoor space by selecting the right lighting. We are loving fairy lights, as you can string them across your outdoor space and create a warm and comforting area. You can count on Habitat’s fairy lights to brighten up your area, big or small. They have a wonderful collection of fairy lights to add a bit of sparkle to the dullest of days. With plenty of shapes, sizes and lengths for you to choose from, you’re bound to find the best fairy lights for your garden.

f we gained anything from lockdown, it was how we can enjoy eating outside. Since then, our love for outdoor eating and drinking has stuck.

What once was something you would only really participate in during a holiday to one of our continental cousins has rightly become a necessary English activity. We are not just talking about the pub garden under a parasol. The UK now has a thriving outdoor eating scene, and we are very much looking forward to seeing gardens filled with full tummies and smiling faces this summer. Embracing the outdoors whilst dining is incredibly refreshing. Scientifically, alfresco dining has also been known to make food and drink taste better, thanks to its effects on the senses. What’s more, it certainly scores brownie points when it comes to relaxation, harmony, adventures and even nostalgia.

Why not take your outdoor affair to another level with an open air movie night? Although we can never predict the weather here in the UK, when the sun does show up, we are compelled to dust off the BBQ and enjoy our food amongst the great outdoors. Luckily, cafés, pubs and restaurants across the UK are pretty equipped for the sudden British showers, sheltering us under the gazebos and marquees. The team at Beautiful South are here to show you the top trends for at-home alfresco dining this summer to help you create your perfect cookout. Start with the set-up… The more rustic the garden table, the better. Invest in a new set of colourful, embossed wine glasses, display a simple floral arrangement and foraged greenery short, clear cups and use a linen table runner to bring the placements together and make the dining experience feel more intimate.

Wood-f ired ovens are not only an investment to your home but also the planet, as they use low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels. Open skies can feel overwhelming, so start building a natural rooftop now by training climber plants like vine or ivy to grow above your seating area. Accessorise your surroundings with solar garden lights to give that fairy tale evening when night draws. Move over to the wood-fired oven… Outside ovens have soared in popularity in recent years. Why? Because they let you host the best garden party on the street and test your cookery skills at the same time! The versatility of woodfired ovens will keep your guests in awe, and with a little practice, you’ll be cooking foods with authentic smoky flavours that are impossible to recreate in a standard oven. Wood-fired ovens are not only an investment to your home but also the planet, as they use low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels. Save on electricity, make great tasting food and help the environment? If this hasn’t already sold it to you, then we are not sure what will.

Close the evening with an outside cinema… It’s easy to lose track of time before dusk falls, which is usually the perfect time to pour a glass of red, light the fire pit and wrap up in a blanket to watch the moon glow. Why not take your outdoor affair to another level with an open-air movie night? For a post-dinner treat, hang a white sheet on the washing line and stream your family’s favourite Disney film via a projector. Green Goddess Salad

Compliments to the condiments Life’s better with condiments. Whether you’re prepping wings, ribs or chops, we suggest opting for the Levi Roots Reggae Reggae Jerk Bbq Sauce. The sauce has gone from strength to strength after winning the attention of the nation on a 2007 episode of Dragon’s Den. The unique jerk mix compliments all sorts of bbq favourites, and with its scotch bonnet ingredient, it’s sure to bring some heat this summer.

The viral TikTok sensation that took the salad scene by storm, the Green Goddess Salad by Baked by Melissa, will knock your guests off their feet and have you enjoying leftovers for days to come. Salad Ingredients: 1 small green cabbage • 1 large cucumber 30g cup chives • 1 bunch green onions or scallions Dressing Ingredients: Handful of basil leaves • Handful of fresh spinach 2 cloves garlic • 1 small shallot • 2 lemons, juiced 85g cup olive oil • 30g cup nuts of your choice (recommend unsalted cashews and walnuts) 20g cup nutritional yeast • 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons rice vinegar

Method: Wash and chop the salad ingredients with a sharp knife into small pieces. Place in a large bowl. Add the liquid salad dressing ingredients to a blender (olive oil, lemon juice, rice vinegar). Add the rest of the dressing ingredients to the same blender. Blend until your dressing is a thick, pourable consistency. Pour the dressing over salad ingredients. Mix well and tuck in! Welcome to

Nestled in the heart of Hampshire, between Winchester and Southampton, The Twynams at Bishopstoke Park is a place for people who want more from later life; more memories to cherish, more friends to share them with, and more of the finer things to discover and savour. Rarely has ‘the great outdoors’ been a more fitting description than at Bishopstoke Park, where our beautiful parkland, wooded glades and manicured gardens create an inspiring and idyllic park like atmosphere. Set in the historic parish of Bishopstoke, the village enjoys a beautiful location alongside the course of the famous River Itchen, occupying over 32 acres of stunning Hampshire countryside. Taking pride of place at the heart of Bishopstoke Park is the sympathetically restored 19th-century Mount Building. This unique and inspiring centrepiece has

“I think our village is an amazing place to live and I am very happy here. It was the right decision made at the right time. I have made a lot of friends and enjoy chatting to the other residents.” Miss Frankel Bishopstoke Park resident

been home to a number of renowned local residents, and now houses our luxurious swimming pool, spa and state-of-the-art wellness centre. Bishopstoke Park is a warm, open and inviting community of like-minded people. Whether it’s a delicious lunch in Antler’s bar and restaurant, a swim in the pool, a therapeutic massage, a new haircut or an afternoon relaxing in the bar with friends that you crave – you can have it all, and much more, at Bishopstoke Park. And of course it is the spectacular, airy twobedroom apartments surrounded by nature that make the homes available at The Twynams unique. Not only is each apartment finished to the highest standard, with luxury finishes and quality fittings, they have each been designed and built with layouts that maximise your exposure to the beauty around you.

British summers are unrivalled. Long evenings in the park, relaxing on a check blanket as you fully immerse yourself in the alfresco lifestyle. Us Brits know how to host a pretty magnificent picnic, but when it comes to the beverages, we’ve slightly fallen off the wagon. We are not saying a jug of Pimm’s isn’t picturesque… but with a basket full of goodies to carry and ice cubes melting at a rapid rate, this season is all about keeping it simple by keeping it in a can. Refreshing and convenient, pre-made drinks give the classic picnic beverages a run for their money. What was initially viewed as a liquid consumed by younger generations, thanks to their low calorie and low ABV offerings, RTD’s (Ready To Drink) are making their way into the wider consumer bracket, focusing on natural ingredients, sophisticated flavours, and aspirational Instagramfriendly branding. We at Beautiful South want to share our top three picks of cans you can take with you wherever you lay your bottom this summer.

Hard seltzers like White Claw are taking the nation by storm, and honestly, who can blame people for loving them! The ultimate refresher when you are in need of a lighter, low-cal alternative to beer or cider. Made from a blend of sparkling water, triple distilled spirit, and a hint of natural fruit flavours, each can is gluten-free, has 95 calories and contains no artificial sweeteners. Available in four flavours, Black Cherry, Natural Lime, Mango and Raspberry, White Claws give off the ultimate essence of long summer days. Picture sipping on a can in the park, watching the day turn to night for a perfect summer evening picnic. Pick up your cans at Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s, Co-Op and Waitrose or get White Claw delivered straight to your door from

Whether you’re picnic-ing around the bandstand or under the shelter of a pergola in one of the South’s bestkept gardens, pre-made cocktails are here for you. Be gone the guilty swig and relish in the outdoor socialising, which is officially on the summer 2022 menu. The undefeated M&S cocktail in a can is definitely one of our favourites. The classic tinny’s come in an array of flavours and pack a punch with 8% alcohol content the ideal grab and go choice for lastminute plans. Pick up at M&S, or online at or

Disclaimer: Beautiful South encourages our readers to always drink responsibly.

But of course, not every picnic needs an alcoholic tipple. Hill Farm Juice, based in the South Downs National Park, have been pressing juices since 1970. Thanks to their micro-climate location, Hill Farm Juice are able to grow excellent apples and pears to make their wide range of juices, including our favourite, Apple Juice with Elderflower. This 2014 Great Taste Award winner is a delicious combination of farm picked apples and the heady aroma of elderflowers. The elderflowers are picked and steeped in freshly pressed apple juice to give a truly refreshing taste on a lazy summer’s day. Find your closet stockist via

On Friday, our Activities Team entertained the residents with a variety of games, followed by traditional fish and chips, always a favourite. Long Weekend of Jubilee fun and frolics at Downs House and Stroud House. The weekend started on Thursday with our big Jubilee lunch, with residents tucking into a great variety of British dishes, including, of course, our chef ’s Jubilee Pudding. After a long lunch, the residents relaxed with a delightful harp concert from Danielle.

Saturday was our big Jubilee Party day, where we welcomed family and friends to join residents in with a sumptuous BBQ buffet and a lively performance from Mike. All enjoyed a dance and sing-a-long with the National Anthem as a finale, and a great surprise was the arrival of the Ice Cream Van handing out complimentary Ice Creams to one and all. On Sunday, the residents planted a tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy, followed by Afternoon Tea and piano performance and a sing-a-long from Eliza. Residents and families all said how enjoyable it was to be back to the fun times at Downs House and Stroud House after the years of lockdowns. There were many complimentary comments, including our favourite, “it was good to have the opportunity to see and chat to staff, who all do an amazing job; it really felt like a big family.”

Family run local care homes, proud of our reputation for elderly care. “Just wanted to thank you and all of your staff so much for all you have done for my Mum. She sounds like a new person, a whole new lease of life at 86 is truly fantastic.”

nce upon a time, not too long ago in a land quite close to home, the Toyota Supra was seen as a classic Japanese sports car, a position cemented by the Mark 4 model’s starring role in the very first ‘Fast & Furious’ film and a prominent place in the original version of Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo’ PlayStation game.

There have, of course, been endless media comparisons between this car and its BMW Z4 cousin. However, all the dynamic elements that really matter - namely the settings for suspension, steering and the electronically controlled differential - are all Toyota’s own, courtesy of an intensive tuning programme from Gazoo Racing, who developed this model.

The tail was, let’s say, ‘lively' but it never felt dangerous or out of control. Production of the Mk4 ended in 2002, and many believed that was that. However, BMW found itself in need of a partner to develop its third generation Z4 sports coupé, which segues nicely to the car we have here. This was the first Toyota to be produced entirely by the brand’s competition division Gazoo Racing - hence the ‘GR’ badging (a GR Yaris followed, and a GR Corolla will happen and might, just might, make its way to the UK). The GR Supra Pro series is built alongside the BMW Z4 on an Austrian production line in Graz and offers a choice of two engines, as also offered in its BMW cousin: a 2.0-litre 254bhp four-pot (£46,000) and a 3.0-litre 335bhp in-line six turbo (£53,000).

The GR Supra Pro’s 3.0-litre power output of 335bhp and performance figure of 0-62mph in 4.3s are very Cayman-like. But the gearbox used on this GR Supra Pro is somewhat different to anything you’ll find on a Porsche. It’s an eightspeed ZF torque converter auto, the change times of which are influenced by your choice between ‘Normal’ or ‘Sport’ drive mode settings. These also alter steering feel, throttle response and the

ride quality you get from the ‘Adaptive Variable Suspension’. For Supra purists, a six-cog manual gearbox is expected in late summer 2022. I put the new GR Supra through its paces at the Millbrook Proving Ground near Bedford recently. The car’s suspension is forgiving enough to drive daily. Its steering is accurate, nicely weighted and direct, which enhances its fun-to-drive personality. Flicking through some switchbacks with the nannying safety electronics disabled, the tail was, let’s say, ‘lively’ and wanted to come round the front to say ‘hello’ a few times, but it never felt dangerous or out of control. Such fun! The GR Supra’s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada sees this as an ‘old fashioned sports car’, and in many ways, it is. There’s something timeless about the feel of a classic front-engined sports car with a lightly-loaded driven rear axle that you just don’t get from supposedly purer mid-engined models like Porsche’s 718 Cayman or the Alpine A110. It’s special, memorable, different and frankly a total blast… exactly as a Supra should be.

here are so many ways that homeowners can change the look and feel of their homes, from small DIY projects to more major renovations. The kitchen is now the most used area of the home and a space that has to combine cooking, eating, entertaining and sometimes home working. We now have a wide range of TV programmes that are inspiring us to transform areas of our homes, to create a sense of spaciousness by connecting our inside to our outside space.

Timber Windows of Winchester 81 High Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9AP Tel: 01962 676 304

The sale of patio and bi-fold doors has increased enormously in recent years. This single renovation can help lighten and make any kitchen and other living spaces look and feel larger. They also help us to feel more connected to the outside and the changing seasons, which is good for our sense of well-being. The addition of garden rooms and conservatories to our homes can also create much-needed multi-function space that links us to the outside.

Whether your home is a country cottage, a Victorian semi, a modern townhouse or a converted barn, we have a range of traditional and contemporary timber windows and doors that will complement it perfectly. Please visit us to explore our range of beautifully crafted timber doors and windows, and expert advice on enhancing the value and beauty of your home.

FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY! An unexpected phone call from a TV production company has certainly changed the course of Kirsten Ramsay’s career in ceramic conservation. As well as running her own business Kirsten now fits in a number of days of filming each month for the phenomenally successful TV series ‘The Repair Shop’ on BBC1. As one of the original conservators on the series, Kirsten has been part of the renowned team of highly experienced artisans since 2017, with the popular show recently completing its seventh series. “I was completely and utterly surprised when Ricochet Productions approached me. Being on TV was not something I had ever thought about. At first, I thought it was someone playing a joke on me! Initially, I was filled with fear, and then I thought, what a wonderful opportunity to showcase conservation. I spoke to some friends about it, and they said it might be fun, so I decided to feel the fear and do it anyway!” “The Repair Shop film crew are amazing, and the filming days are quite intense and long. We are now in our sixth year of filming the series, and strong bonds and friendships have formed in that time.”

work, so they can come into a commercial setting. It is lovely to see their passion and enthusiasm at the start of their careers, and I enjoy passing on my knowledge.” “I found my career in ceramic conservation quite by accident. I originally trained to be an exhibition designer, technical drawing, model making etc., all with a 3D element. I did this for a while but didn’t find it particularly fulfilling. Then while living in London, I was attracted to an adult education course on ceramic restoration. The lady who ran the course was a ceramics conservator working on ancient Egyptian ceramics. At the time, I didn’t know that kind of job existed and thought how amazing to be able to do that kind of work.” “I had only just moved down to Sussex when I found that the nearby West Dean College had a two-year Ceramic Conservation Course, which was life-changing as I soon realised it was what I really wanted to do as I absolutely loved it as it ticked all the right boxes for me.”

“I feel very privileged that people trust us with their precious items; sometimes it can be something of low monetary value, but comes with an interesting family history and memories that open up big and sometimes emotional conversations with the owners. It is often a place of last resort for their ceramic pieces that are badly damaged.”

“Working together with the other experts on ‘The Repair Shop’ has made it special for all of us; there is the cross-pollination of skills, and it has been really enriching for me. It is a really special, genuinely warm and collaborative and supportive space to work in.” The programme is filmed at The Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton, West Sussex, not too far from Kirsten’s Sussex based home and ceramic conservation business that she founded in 1995, when still working part-time at The British Museum. Kirsten also gets some help in her business from a couple of assistants, graduates from West Dean College where she studied. “I just couldn’t do without them, and it is really lovely to offer them

“It combined the physical practical side, with the colours in the ceramics, and it brings me huge pleasure exploring the history and story behind each piece, often working with objects from all over the world. The absolute joy of this work is that I’m constantly learning, with each piece presenting a new challenge.” “Consulting with the owners of each piece, private clients or museums presents a whole variety of considerations and is never dull.”

Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Dame Judi Dench, all playing their part in the hilarious Comic Relief sketch visiting The Repair Shop - were all disappointed not to meet Kirsten, all repeating: “We didn’t get to meet Kirsten!” “I grew up watching French and Saunders and was really flattered they included my name in their scene at the Repair Shop, and although I wasn’t there for the filming, I did get to meet Dame Judi a few weeks before the filming.” When not filming or working within her own business Kirsten has a love of nature, gardening, walking out in the beautiful countryside and rows with a local rowing club. The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Photos by @sarahweal.

Discover the magic of...

A space for relaxation against the breathtaking backdrop of the Giraffe Conservation Centre.

Have you ever wanted to visit this iconic Sanctuary? Giraffe Manor’s popularity soars to new heights as the safari aficionado’s bucket list destination since featuring on TV. So what better way to commence a wonderful wildlife experience and/or beach trip in Kenya. Giraffe Manor leads the world in the repopulation of the endangered Rothschild giraffe. The long-necked residents visit the estate both morning and evening, poking through your window in the hope of a treat. Karen and James of Meon Valley Travel have just returned from this Conservationists trip of a lifetime, happy to share their experience.

The Manor House Giraffe Manor is an exquisite boutique hotel forming part of The Safari Collection and normally commanding up to a 3-year waiting list. There are two main guest houses, each with six rooms and set in 12 acres of private reserve amidst the forested outskirts of Nairobi. The pandemic

has created a unique window of opportunity, with post-pandemic availability being rapidly snapped up by those in the know. The Manor gifts the warmth of a home from home, with every guest enjoying dedicated host service. All room names are inspired by local author Karen Blixen’s iconic ‘Out of Africa’, which is definitely worth a read whilst soaking up the surroundings of the terrace. Giraffe Manor is ‘fully-inclusive’; there is a strict 12-noon check-in/out policy, which is a need to know and mindful of giraffe having priority. If you arrive or depart late, it’s worth knowing to book a day room at additional cost in the adjacent Manor Retreat to make your wait more comfortable.

Afternoon Tea Reserved exclusively for in-house guests, you will want to embrace the customary afternoon tea ritual on the terrace. A truly magical experience as

the sun sets behind the Ngong Hills, highlighting the view of the reserve and throwing a warm afterglow across the giraffe. With the chinking teacups’ clarion call, the giraffe know they are in for a treat and delight in joining the guests. This is a celebrated photo opportunity where your host will ensure you’re suitably armed with the giraffe’s favourite grass pellets and to assist in getting that all-important Instagram shot. We love the Giraffe Manor motto ‘No food, no friendship’. This is particularly appropriate for ‘Kelly’, one of the more infamous giraffes known to give a testy little headbutt if you’re too slow with your food offering. You are correctly and constantly respectful of the fact these gentle giants remain wild and not in any way domesticated!

A bucket list dream destination where your stay directly gifts life to conservation. Breakfast with the giraffe

The Giraffe Centre

If you are lucky enough to experience Giraffe Manor, the day starts early. Karen and James’s experience began around 5.30 am when greeted by patriarch Edd leading the herd, headbutting the window demanding attention. Each room is supplied with an enormous bowl of grass pellets. Your once in a lifetime experience begins with breakfast in the world-famed Giraffe Manor dining room. Whilst shown to your table, the windows are closed. Once you have finished your glorious breakfast, the windows are thrown open, and your new found giraffe friends are keen again to join.

The AFEW Giraffe Centre is both mission and purpose of the property. Across the lawn from Giraffe Manor is where the foundation hosts the wildlife breeding and repopulation programme of these elegant but endangered creatures. Since the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) was founded, wild Rothchild’s giraffe numbers have risen from 100 to more than 1,800 with the Manor guests’ support.

The Retreat New to Giraffe Manor is a little haven of wellness. The Retreat is a space for relaxation against the breathtaking backdrop of the Giraffe Conservation Centre. It’s exclusive to guests staying at The Safari Collection properties and Safari Camps, and that’s the trick to jumping the queue!

Did you know?

• One night is enough; however, many stay for two nights to make the most of the hosted experience and wonderful facilities. • Giraffe saliva contains antiseptic properties. • A giraffe’s tongue can grow up to 20 inches long. | Tel 01730 711010 Email

Bathrooms Despite being one of the smaller rooms, Bathrooms have quickly become a focal point in the home; a place of relaxation, tranquillity and cleanliness. Bathrooms are the first place you visit when you wake up and one of the last before you sleep, so they deserve to be treated with the same love that other prized rooms inside your home receive, to set you in a good mood for the day ahead or relax your mind before bed.

Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles,

Design The Natural Outdoors - Incorporating natural woods, potted plants and eco-materials helps create a relaxing feel by bringing outside world indoors. Injecting Colour - Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles, bringing it all together with gold features; if you’ve ever visited the famous ‘Sketch’ in London then you’ll be able to gather inspiration from its modern quirky 18thcentury designs. Warm blues or pinks show off your personality and create an inviting place to get ready each morning. Details in the Dark - Dark colours are making a strong comeback in the interior design world. Perhaps one of the trendiest things of this season, dark features are no longer boring or intimidating, instead they can wonderfully contrast against feature colours and tiling.

A well-designed bathroom is a thing of beauty and can also boost the value of your home. From lighting to flooring, features to accessories, colour, texture and of course, the tubs, basins, sinks and showers – there’s a lot of elements to consider.

You don’t need to install a brand-new bathroom to achieve your #bathroomgoals. Decor You don’t need to install a brand-new bathroom to achieve your #bathroomgoals. Stripping your current bathroom back to its canvas and adding new features and accessories can take your bathroom to meh to mwah! To create a calm ‘sanctuary’ feel on a budget, use warm earthy tones throughout your bathroom accessories to contrast against bold black accents for handles and hangers, that will help deliver a mixed soft industrial appeal.

Details With so many products for haircare, beauty and hygiene, our bathrooms can often feel cluttered. Try utilising your storage space and reducing the amount of products you have on display. Only leave the products out that are appealing to the eye and help tie-in with the true sanctuary feel to provide a welcome antidote.
