The leopard print coat Animal design is everywhere this season, and the leopard print trend doesn’t seem to be changing its spots anytime soon. If you don’t normally wear bold patterns, begin small by incorporating accents of this print into your outfit with a scarf or belt. Once you feel more confident, you’ll realise it’s easier to embrace leopard print into your outfit than you think, and you’ll be strutting down the street in this coat in no time! Pair this statement coat with some ankle boots in the day and swap for a pair of stilettos, a little black dress, and finish with a gold necklace to transition to evening wear.

Evening wear jumpsuit This lightweight wrap jumpsuit is perfect for work and play, with just a quick change of shoes and the addition of jewellery, you can go from desk to dinner with this classic staple item. Combined with metallic boots, a bold scarf and a leather jacket, you’re ready for the night!

Don’t let the cold weather get you in a fashion funk... with these ten items your winter wardrobe woes will be no more! With classic jumpers, a pop of on-trend leopard print and a sprinkle of gold, simply mix and match these outfits and you’re good to go from head to toe.

The classic white blouse No capsule wardrobe is complete without a wellfitting white blouse, and this subtly-embroidered number is perfect to wear for all occasions. Wear with trousers under a black jumper with the collar popped out, layer over a dress for a textured look, and tuck into a skirt for a traditional formal look.

LEATHER JACKET No wardrobe is complete without a timeless icon, and a good-quality leather jacket never goes out of style. A black leather jacket easily transitions from day to nightwear, and adds biker glamour to any outfit.

Tailored grey trousers Stride into winter with this seasons trouser-print of choice: tartan! Pair with loafers for a casual day-look, or vamp up with metallic boots and gold accessories.

PINK TARTAN SCARF Tickle your outfit pink and keep snug with an oversized scarf, ideal to wear while out and about, as well as doubling as a shawl for a night-time look. This subtle tartan scarf adds a pop of colour and pattern to your outfit and will keep you cosy all winter long.

STATEMENT BLACK LOAFERS Combine comfort and style with these black leather loafers, ideal for work paired with trousers, or smartened up with a dress and gold jewellery.

The Cashmere knit Invest in the best knitwear for the winter with a versatile jumper that you’ll wear and re-wear with a variety of outfits. This star-print jumper is perfect to wear with jeans and trainers for effortless casual chic, or wear over a dress or tucked into a skirt for a smarter look.

METALLIC BOOTS A pop of metallic is all the range to add a touch of sparkle to your outfit, and can be styled with jeans for a casual day look, and smarter trousers, dresses and skirts for a work or evening occasion. These boots will be a goldmine in your wardrobe throughout the winter.

Statement gold jewellery The right accessories can completely transform an outfit, and nothing is quite as timeless as statement gold jewellery. Go straight from office chic to a night on the town with pearl drop earrings, and complete your ensemble with a pendant necklace.

Combat the cold this season and restaurants are filling reusable bottles free of charge, enabling you to hydrate on the go wherever you are.

Take a breather While exercise is an important factor in reducing the risk of illness during the winter, a proper amount of R & R is just as beneficial for your mind, body and soul. Remember to slow things down from time to time and relax, whether that’s snuggling down in front of the fire with a warm drink, or getting an early night and catching up on your zzz’s. Your body can’t function without sufficient rest, so set aside at least 30 minutes every evening to unwind.

is’ the season for illness; whether it’s a common cold or the flu, the chilly weather can leave us feeling bunged up and lethargic, which makes it all too easy to forget to take care of ourselves. But as the weather turns icy, it’s time to heat up our routines and stay healthy throughout the winter months. Here’s a few ways you can reduce illness throughout the frost, and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle rain or shine (or snow and sleet).

Beneficial Bacterial Greek yogurt not only tastes delicious, but it’s also hugely valuable to our well-being as it’s filled with healthy probiotics that help maintain a healthy immune system. Greek yogurt also contains iodine, which is essential for our metabolism, and calcium which is great to reduce fat storing in our bodies… so this delicious treat is fundamentally a triple-threat when it comes to keeping well this winter! Greek yogurt is easy to add into our diets, whether it’s combined with oats and berries for a healthy breakfast, or switched in as healthier alternative to cream and butter.

Energy from endorphins We all know exercise is great for our health, but it can also have a huge impact on our immunity to illness, as it drastically improves our overall fitness which in turn keeps our immune system in great shape. Our heart and mind also reap the rewards from moderate exercise, and it has been proven that even just walking daily, running twice a week, or going to the gym every other day can reduce the amount of cold symptoms we get, as opposed to partaking in no exercise at all.

Healing hydration Despite all the vitamins, kale smoothies and superfoods that exist, water remains the most consistent way to keep a healthy body and mind. Drinking 2-3 litres of water a day not only does wonders for your skin, metabolism and energy levels, but is also recognised to reduce the risk of illness due to flushing away toxins and keeping the body hydrated. Investing in a reusable water bottle contributes to saving the environment of plastic waste, plus more and more cafés

Winter illness may seem inevitable, especially as there is no permanent cure for a cold. But indulging in these proven methods will help keep the chill at bay, and allow you to embrace the season with resilience and positivity.

to discovering your new beauty must have serums

Scrub goodbye to signs of aging and oily skin… these serums will become the new champions of your skincare regime. During the winter months it can be all-too-easy to neglect taking care of your skin, but it’s important to keep your skin properly hydrated through the cold spells when oily skin can become irritated, and dry skin can be triggered. Serum is a beauty product you may already have in your makeup bag or bathroom cabinet, but you may not know the full extent of what this magical liquid can be used for. Fret no more, as we’ve sourced the five best serums on the market, so whether you have oily, dry or combination skin and want to reinvigorate it with a youthful glow, the perfect potion is just waiting for you to try.

To plump up your skin Plantscription Anti-Aging Power Serum, £65 Featuring 20 targeted anti-aging plant extracts, this serum works tirelessly to reduce visible lines and wrinkles, and your skin will appear plumper and firmer in as little as two weeks. The wonderfully natural ingredients in this serum include: anogeissus from Ghana, bamboo and pea extract from Australia, crithmum from France and commiphora from India. appearance. The added aroma of frankincense has been proven to help you de-stress and age less! This set is also perfect as a stocking filler or birthday gift during the festive period. For supple skin Decorte Liposome Serum - £113 If a serum is endorsed by fashion icon and beauty expert Kate Moss, then it must be good! This product is designed to strengthen the barrier of your skin and gradually release hydration and moisture throughout the day to keep your skin looking fresh and glowy, so it’s ideal for the winter when our skin becomes dryer.

Nicotine Before you take another puff, please can we talk about what is actually in a cigarette. Seasoned smokers will tell you, that a cigarette relaxes them, helps them to concentrate, makes them calm down and many other justifications, but in actuality, the majority of that is not the cigarette itself, it is nicotine. The American Addiction centre cites nicotine in the top five most addictive substances on the planet, along with heroin, barbiturates, alcohol and cocaine. This makes sense as it is an alkaloid, which means it contains nitrogen and is chemically similar to things like caffeine and cocaine. Nicotine is found naturally in tobacco which is part of the nightshade family which, alongside aubergine, potato and tomatoes, also includes, mandrake, deadly nightshade or belladonna. It is a mild stimulant that actually can help to sharpen memory, concentration and attention span in the short term. When it binds to receptors in the brain, it releases dopamine, which aside from being the ‘feel good’ chemical, also plays a role in appetite suppression, movement, and concentration. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance, that can cause feelings of temporary relaxation and stress relief, by elevating your mood and heart rate.

12 | Beautiful South | November/December 2018

Your smoker friends are not incorrect with their justifications. It can provide instant relief, just one puff through the lungs and nicotine is released to the brain in just ten seconds. A short-term fix with long-term detriment. Nicotine and tobacco are not the only ingredients in cigarettes. They are said to contain more than 600 ingredients, and that is not a typo. A few notables are; tar, used for paving roads, formaldehyde which is used to embalm bodies, carbon monoxide as in car exhaust fumes, lead, arsenic, acetone as in nail polish remover, butane as in lighter fuel, ammonia, naphthalene, which is an ingredient in mothballs and methanol; a main component in rocket fuel and these are just ten off the list. This information and all other health cautions are freely available in the public domain, yet millions of people continue to smoke voluntarily. Which just goes to show how powerfully addictive nicotine is. What is most important to remember is that many people who smoke frequently refer to this pastime as a habit, it is not. It is an addiction to one of the top five most addictive drugs on the planet, coupled with a psychological habit; a truly deadly

combination. So, in giving up, it is essential to address both the addiction and the ritual together. The physical craving lasts between 10-20 minutes, so many find that a distraction during this period helps them through it. Pair this with creating a new ritual. Some peel grapes, some crack pistachios, some water plants, it doesn’t matter what it is, the key is to find what works for you. Intense withdrawal cravings usually peak at three days after quitting and continue on and off for approximately two weeks, after that they start to dissipate, and it is said that after three months your brain chemistry starts to return to normal allowing the smoker to regain both their freedom and health. There are methods of extra help, that don’t use nicotine replacement therapy, such as The Maas Clinic’s ‘Stop Smoking Programme’ which works using Pulse Electromagnetic Feedback technology. It is well worth looking into as it generally only takes 2-3 sessions to do the trick. Drug free, totally painless and non-invasive.

Meet the new Head of Bedales Pre-prep School, Dunannie Victoria Homewood, new Head of Bedales Pre-prep School Dunannie, arrives with a wealth of experience, enthusiasm for Early Years’ education, and a fresh approach to reading, writing, numeracy, and creativity as well as the benefits of encouraging children to interact with nature and the outdoors. When the chance came for her to join Dunannie, with its track record of pioneering and innovative education, it was an opportunity she simply had to take. She says: “The school’s values and approach align very closely with my own educational philosophy, which focuses on the differing needs of each individual and the development and encouragement of children’s inquisitiveness and love of learning.” The school’s ethos of ‘head, hand and heart’, as established by founder John Badley, prescribes an education for the whole child, combining the academic, the practical and the social. Victoria endorses this ethos entirely, but adds, “the Bedales original educational philosophy obviously requires constant reinterpretation to make it appropriate for its time”. For example, of her enthusiasm for outdoors’ education, she says: “These days, most of us spend the vast majority of our time indoors,

and our connection with nature is consequently limited. This is one area where we can re-imagine education and rectify this imbalance”. Beside the benefit of this bringing subjects to life in a new way, Victoria believes that exposure to nature can help children connect with themselves and others in an unpressurised way. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she is not in favour of testing for young children. She says: “There is an assumption that children should achieve a certain level at a certain age, which is misguided – they should not have to deal with that kind of stress, and the fear of so-called failure”.

“The school’s values align closely with my own educational philosophy, which focuses on the differing needs of each individual.” Rather, Victoria is an advocate of ‘growth mind-set’, a concept developed by psychologist Carol Dweck, which supports the idea that young people who believe their intelligence, intellectual and otherwise, is not fixed but can be increased, or grown, are better able to cope with life both as children and adults. Accordingly, she favours children learning to see mistakes as evidence of something that they are simply not be able to do at present but will eventually achieve in the future. What, then, might the future for Dunannie look like under Victoria’s ambitious stewardship? She will ensure the essentials – reading, writing and numeracy – are thoroughly addressed, and brings with her innovative and proven new methods in these areas. But she is equally passionate to ensure that creativity and other talents are nurtured, such as an emphasis on social and interpersonal skills – the values of

helping others, of politeness and consideration, and being kind and decent to one another. Victoria notes: “The ethos and family culture – of involving parents, grandparents, siblings and the wider community – are invaluable here at Bedales. The facilities are also wonderful, and we have great teaching talent.” However, her passion for outdoor learning might see more happen outside the classroom. She concludes: “This has always been an outstanding feature of life at Dunannie, but it is one of several areas I plan to explore and expand.”

Victoria Homewood invites prospective parents and children to visit Bedales Preprep, Dunannie, part of the 3-18 Bedales Schools. There is a special Santa’s Grotto free event for Nursery age children and parents on Wednesday 5 December at 10am. To book a place or to arrange a visit, please contact Kate Freeman, Deputy Registrar, 01730 711558; e:

As the days grow shorter and the frost sets in, we’re trading nights out for cosy evenings in… so what better time for a wintery interior revamp! This season is all about Contemporary Glamour, which means monotone greys and pastels are taking a back seat, and gold accents are at the forefront of our winter interior must-haves. There are some easy, fun and surprisingly inexpensive ways to glamorise your home this season, and with Christmas upon us, it’s the perfect time to shop for those extra luxurious accessories. A chandelier is the perfect place to start glamming up your home. A contemporary chandelier can become a focal feature within your room, and will certainly draw the eye. Opt for a chic and elegant light that is not too heavy on the metal, but rather focused on glass and intricate detail, with a touch of gold on the arms. This will give your dining room, living room, or bedroom a truly stylish look. As interior designer Rebecca Barnes from Petersfield says: “It’s the devil in the detail that will create a fabulous home.” Contemporary Glamour is all about the details - try switching up your curtains, rugs, cushions and other

fabrics throughout your home with pieces that have accents of gold colouring and patterns. Why not go all out and create a gold feature wall, or simply add gold paint to your shelves and skirting boards! If you aren’t quite ready to take the complete goldplunge, you could simply replace the curtain hooks or poles with a dash of shimmer for a more subtle look. This will give you the sophisticated edge you’re looking for without requiring a full curtain make over. And don’t forget those accessories… Gilt mirrors, glass and coated brass coffee tables and lamps will add a wonderful pop of metallic to the room, and you could even go all out with gold pillows, a foot stool, or even a statement chair. Less is more when you are initially redecorating your home, so start small with accessories and go from there once you find the style that suits your room and taste. Unsure where to start? Not to worry! We have handpicked our favourite on-trend products that will set off your redesign, so you can get inspired and begin your own Contemporary Glamour home design.

Colder climates call for evenings filled with warm fireplaces, glasses of red and fabulous cheese boards. With many Hampshire farms producing award winning cheeses on our doorstep, mastering the art of creating the perfect cheese is easier than you think. A well put together cheese board is the perfect food for any occasion - be it a starter, dessert or an afternoon nibble. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love cheese? A cheeseboard is such a versatile dish, so even if you get tired of one board in particular, there are so many cheeses out there for you to try so you can easily change your selection and swap in new choices each and every time. The possibilities are endless. In general, the trick to a good cheese board is to include a variety of textures and tastes. You should select three to five cheeses and ensure that there is a mixture of hard, soft, blue, nutty and oaky flavours. Don’t forget about the accompaniments. You should always pair cheeses with breads, crackers, fruit and meats to balance and compliment their flavours. However, there are no rules to cheese boards, so have fun with it and try something new! To push you in the right direction, we have tried and tested some local produce to bring you some delicious suggestions as to how to create the perfect, hearty Hampshire cheese board...

Photos on opposite page: top left Old Winchester cheese from Lyburn Farmhouse, bottom left British Camembert, Tunworth from Hampshire Cheeses. Top right Isle of Wight Blue cheese, bottom right Gouda from Briddlesford Lodge Farm

Choose a cheese made from goats milk to add variety to your platter. The Beau Farm Soft Goats Cheese, made from free range goats milk, will add a strong and salty flavour to any cheese board selection. This cheese is beautiful when enjoyed with a sticky caramelised onion relish. You can find this cheese online at The Beau Farm Shop and the Farmers Choice Delicatessen.

For a hard cheese, try the Old Winchester from Lyburn Farmhouse in the New Forest. This is an award-winning British cheese that has been recognised across Europe for its mature and distinctively nutty taste. Pair with a segment of fresh fig, as the honey-like sweetness of the fruit will compliment this sharp cheese. The Old Winchester is also a fantastic vegetarian replacement for any hard Italian-style cheese. You can find this cheese at Stansted Park Farm Shop in Rowlands Castle and Kingsgate Wines & Provisions in Winchester.

For that scrummy blue cheese, tuck into the Isle of Wight Blue. This mild, dark blue and green veined cheese has a lovely smooth texture and tastes delicious when accompanied by a wafer cracker with a sprinkle of walnuts. This cheese is proven to be the best of the best, having most notably won the Best English Cheese at The World Cheese Awards. You can find this delicious blue cheese at the Southbourne Farm Shop in Emsworth, or you can order online at

If you’re looking to add some oakiness onto your board, try the Gouda from Briddlesford Lodge Farm in the Isle of Wight. This rustic cheese has been maturing on wood for up to 12 months prior to purchase and as a result offers a unique meaty flavour. Find this oaky delight at your local Southern Co-op and online at Last but not least is the classic cheddar, so if you can’t get enough of this traditional favourite, look no further than the Buffalo Cheddar from Laverstoke Park Farm in Overton. This protein rich, crumbly cheese is made an even more attractive purchase as it is produced purely through organic means, making it a delicious and healthier choice. This cheese is available from The Farm Shop in Longstock Park, your local Watirose, and online. For a creamier cheese, bake the soft British Tunworth, the unique Camembert from Hampshire Cheeses, until the centre is oozy. You cannot go wrong when you pair this camembert with a warm crusty loaf and a dollop of sweet cranberry sauce. The earthy mushroom fragrance of Tunworth ensures you will not mistake this local delight with a camembert from across the Channel. This unique Hampshire cheese is available from The Great British Charcuterie Co in Brighton, The Hampshire Farmers Market in Winchester on the second and last Sunday of each month, and online at

Autumn and Winter Reds

Discovering the perfect wine for your festive feast By Jonathan Rogers of VIN WINE MERCHANTS, Emsworth.

After the hottest summer on record where we spent our time sipping fresh fruity rosé, crisp dry whites and the odd gin and tonic, it’s time to focus our attentions to some stunning ‘sitting by the fire’ reds to warm our hearts as the cold nights draw in. It’s the time of year when we start to think about which in the world wine we are going to enjoy with our Christmas feasts. If you love to stay traditional and opt for the turkey to take centre place on your table then fruity, rounded whites’ pair well. However, in this issue we are focusing on the red variety, so I have picked three fantastic choices that will pair perfectly with turkey, beef and goose, as well as the vegetarian option of your choice.

TAHBILK Cabernet Sauvignon Nagambie Lakes, Victoria Australia £16.99

LES VIGNES DE L’EGLISE Merlot/Grenache Languedoc Roussillon France £8.49

From the oldest family owned vineyard in Australia dating back to the 1860’s and where I learnt how to make wine, this stunner has a beautiful, full yet smooth character full of blackcurrant fruit and minty hints. Savour this wine, take your time and it will remind you why winter is the best time of year.

A great example of what good value for money wines from this region are. Softer red berry fruit with bags of flavour with a rounded, medium bodied finish.

SANTA ALBA Pinot Noir Chile £10.25 The perfect red to pair with the turkey, this smooth, elegant number is light and fresh and is ideal to drink at the beginning of your meal. Its cherry fruit characters jump out from the glass and its finish is round soft and gentle.

All of the wines mentioned above plus many more delicious options are available from VIN Wine Merchants 6 Queen St, Emsworth, Hants, PO10 7BL and online at

Proprietor of VIN Wine Merchants and The Solent Wine Experience Jonathan Rogers has over 25 years of experience in the world of wine, having started his career at Oddbins and then moving on to a position at Tahbilk Vineyard in Australia where he learnt how to grow grapes and make wine. Jonathan’s career then took him to London, where he had a buying role with Annabels Club and Harrods Wine Department, but he eventually returned to the South Coast to begin his own venture. Visit Jonathan at VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth today for quality wine at affordable prices, or to speak to him about the various courses he has to offer, as well as tours and tasting events. It’s time to embrace the great outdoors, with the trend for ‘all things heritage’ this season! Tartan and tweed have always been ‘team mates’, and they are back in fashion again this winter offering you warmth and durability! Both tartan and tweed originate from the Scottish Highland which has grown in popularity amongst the fashion industry.

At this point, we’re all wondering how to make our daily outfits weatherproof. In the world of fashion, many things look appealing but aren’t exactly practical, however, investing in tweed and tartan products will enable you to stay warm and stylish without bulking yourself up in layers of heavy clothing.

This season, the trend of country-side inspired apparel, is set to dominate the shop rails. While tartan and tweed associate itself with tradition and quality, it also embeds the conception of being a timeless and voguish style. After enjoying two months of unseasonably warm weather, winter has finally arrived!

Both tartan and tweed originate from woven wool which come in a variety of weights, weaves and colours, making it the perfect wear for the winter months. When worn together they burst with charm and sophistication.

Creating the perfect outfit... hen it comes to pairing tartan and tweed, it’s all about the accessories you choose. Primarily, if you are wearing a tweed jacket or trouser, we advise that you pair with a tartan scarf. It is the scarf that will lift the outfit to create a modish look. Or, if you are planning to wear a tartan hat, you should always opt for apparel that complements the detail of the pattern.

For example, if the hat incorporates the colour light brown, pair with a tweed jacket or trouser that match the colour precisely. It is through this articulation that you can form a compelling outfit that oozes with composure and character.

Polo Plaid Twill Sport Coat, £495.00, Ralph Lauren Ralph Lauren Classic, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth PO1 3TA, 023 9289 0030

That said, if you are purchasing your first tweed or tartan item, we advise that you should start with a tweed jacket. For instance, you could buy a jacket that will suit your existing wardrobe and pair with a cashmere jumper and dark fitted jeans. An effortless and fashionable way to wear the fabric to keep you warm this winter. Or, if you prefer a jacket that is less formal, we have included a tweed coat which is the perfect wear for those ‘stylish’ winter walks of glooming chill.

Alan Paine Combrook Men’s Field Coat, £329.95, New Forest Clothing, 17 Downton Industrial Estate, Batten Rd, Salisbury SP5 3HU, 01725 510051

Don’t forget, investing in a practical, yet stylish boot is also a key ‘must have’ to accompany the final look. Beautiful South have found the perfect boot created by Thomas Partridge. This is inspired by the original Chelsea Boot, and has been expertly crafted with the highest quality leather and engineered with comfort and style. On a final note, tartan and tweed in unison create the perfect outfit. Not only does the style associate itself with the British heritage look but it also offers you a practical yet modern appearance for your everyday wear, this Winter! Donkeys are often associated with Christmas, but the folks at The Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary work year-round to provide a safe home for these beautiful creatures. Christmas is on the horizon, and so our thoughts turn to giving something back to those less fortunate than ourselves, whether that be people or animals. In this edition, we share the magical story of The Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary and how this non-profit organisation provides incredible life-long care for retired, unwanted and abused donkeys. Owners of the sanctuary Paul and Tracy Hunt are experienced equine carers having owned horses for many years. Thirteen years ago, after seeing an advert in the local paper for two working donkeys named Ollie and Rusty, Paul and Tracy instantly fell in love and bought them. They continued the tradition of donkey rides along Hayling Island seafront as a hobby, but soon realised that these kind and caring creatures had so much more to offer. Since then, Paul and Tracy’s herd has grown, and they now provide a home to eighteen gorgeous donkeys with various background stories; some retired, some unwanted, some neglected and some simply in need of a place to call home. Old or young, a donkey hug from one of these affectionate animals will uplift the spirits of all. After a health assessment, the donkeys that are still able to work provide rides for children at local farms, fetes and shows. They also visit schools and nursing homes, and are available to hire for special occasions.

To help fund their work further, the sanctuary has introduced a ‘Care n Cuddle’ workshop, an adoption scheme coupled with open days so that people can spend quality time with their adopted donkey.

“THE EXISTENCE OF THE SANCTUARY HAS ONLY BEEN POSSIBLE THROUGH THE SUPPORT FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND THE GROWING BAND OF TRULY AMAZING VOLUNTEERS.” Over the years, employees and volunteers have cared tenderly for these donkeys to help rebuild their trust in humanity. These people have witnessed first-hand how these gentle and intelligent creatures will give themselves whole-heartedly and in return, simply ask for a comfortable safe home for the rest of their lives, which may not be possible without the sanctuary. Paul explains, “It is so heart-warming to find so many like-minded, kind hearted people who appreciate how special the donkeys are.” To enable the sanctuary to continue providing a safe and fulfilling place for both two and four legged beings, Paul and Tracy hope to replace the old fencing, improve the animal facilities and build a garden building where workers, volunteers and visitors can gather. Why not adopt a donkey this christmas? Refer to the Beautiful South Christmas gift guide for more information, or visit adopt-a-donkey/. Visit the sanctuary at Mill Rythe Lane, Hayling Island, PO11 0QG. To volunteer/fundraise for sanctuary, or to find out more information email, or call 02392 465640.

Award-Winning Local Author: Claire Fuller

aving been awarded the 2015 Desmond Elliott Prize for her debut novel Our Endless Numbered Days and winning the Royal Academy and Pin Drop Short Story Award in 2016, Claire Fuller discusses with Beautiful South her latest book entitled: Bitter Orange along with an insight into her career to becoming a renowned novelist and short fiction writer.

Writing a novel, we thought would entail a considerable amount of planning but for Claire, it’s the opposite. “I don’t plan my novels. I have no idea how they will end and what will happen, it happens as I write”.

Claire was born and raised in Oxfordshire and currently lives in the beautiful city of Winchester. She studied Sculpture at Winchester School of Art but went on to have a long career in marketing and didn’t start writing until she was forty. She later completed an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Winchester.

“Without giving away any spoilers, it’s about Frances who is commissioned to survey the follies in the gardens of an old country house. There she meets a couple who are staying in the rooms below hers, but it becomes clear that not everything is right between them. As Frances becomes increasingly entangled in the couple’s lives the boundaries between truth, lies, right and wrong, begin to blur. A small crime is committed which brings on a bigger one, which changes all their lives forever”.

We then continue by asking about her most recent novel, Bitter Orange.

Her skills and life experiences encouraged her to write several books. These being, Our Endless Numbered Days, Swimming Lessons, and her most recent, Bitter Orange. Each book has been bought by the renowned publishing company Penguin, with each edition becoming a success amongst a variety of readers. As external surroundings can influence a writer’s creativity, we thought it would be interesting to begin the interview by asking what influenced her writing. Claire states: “It is my memories, culture, local places and the books I read that impact my writing”. For instance, “The Grange, a neoclassical country house near Alresford, was the inspiration behind my latest book, Bitter Orange”. Claire also finds it inspiring to read a variety of other novels and believes that it enhances the creative flow of her writing.

The book is currently receiving fantastic reviews one being:

“Claire is an accomplished and serious writer who has the ability to implant interesting psychological dimensions into a plotty, pacy narratives.” – The Observer Claire States: “Receiving positive reviews validates my writing and its great to know that readers enjoy my books, it’s an inspiring feeling”. Speaking of the future, we asked her what literary success looked like to her. “People might think it’s about the books charts and how many books are sold. Although there is an element of that, I also feel that writing a book that I am proud of and building a readership of people who enjoy my novels are priceless.”

ow in its sixth-generation, the 2018 Ford Mustang gets a leaner face, revised suspension, improved safety equipment and a more powerful 5.0-litre V8. Now more suited to European tastes, Ford’s 50-year-old American icon is more rounded for wider appeal but remains as enthralling as ever. Enhancements under the skin are more substantial than exterior changes. Ford has retuned the suspension and added a new optional 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine gains additional torque, while 5.0-litre V8 GT model as tested gets more power plus a re-engineered six-speed manual gearbox and a two-mode exhaust system. Outside, the bonnet loses the longitudinal ribs and power dome of last year’s model for a lower, cleaner-looking one with a pair of tastefully executed extractor vents. The grille has a revised shape, as does the front fascia. But the biggest visual change is the move to more dramatic LED illumination for the headlights, daytime running lights, tail lights and fog lamps. The handsome 19-inch alloys fill the wheel arches nicely and are standard across the Mustang fastback and convertible range, irrespective of engine choice. The front seats are comfortable and supportive either around town or when carving up a challenging B-road. The dash is still a mixed bag. It’s charming, certainly, but the characterful design touches don’t hide the use of cheap plastics and switches. More impressive is the standard 12.0in digital instrument cluster. The graphics are sharp and you can toggle between a variety of layouts that range from conventionallooking dials to simplified displays that show

You can even mix and match between different displays and change the colour of the instruments. The Ford Mustang GT convertible has a belting engine in the 5.0-litre V8, full of brawn, torquey from idle to redline, and possessed of a thunderous soundtrack. With 444hp and 530Nm of torque, performance is suitably brisk and a 0-62mph sprint takes just 4.6 seconds, with 155mph possible flat out. It really is the making of the Mustang. The optional 10-speed automatic ‘box in the test car was a bit dim-witted and prone to hunter-gatherer tendencies when left to its own devices. Fortunately, a pair of steering wheel-mounted flappies allow you to take full control when you want to. And you’ll want to. For a car that weighs a little under 1,800kg, the

Mustang has lots of front-end bite and does a reasonably good job of telegraphing what the front tyres are doing through the steering wheel. While you can get the front end slipping wide if you enter a corner too quickly, there’s more chance of the rear stepping out if you’re too early with power on corner exit. The convertible exhibits a touch of body flex and wobble going on that erodes that cornering keenness but it’s still hugely entertaining and lovable through and through. It’s not at all efficient, nor is it the most precise-handling. But, it’s easy to love and readily turns heads everywhere it goes. It’s loud, throbby, looks marvelous and is satisfyingly fun to drive.

in the Cellarium. There’ll be simple activities for younger children too, so there’s fun for all the family. Mottisfont’s Christmas involves creative work from all staff and volunteers, including a craft group and garden florists, who come together to create decorations and dress the house and grounds to wow visitors year after year. Any installations have to be carefully planned to protect the historic nature of the house and grounds, and need to be durable to last the winter. Foliage for outdoor decorations is cut and collected from the managed woodland on Mottisfont’s wider estate. Everything – and everyone - comes together to create a Christmas that’s truly unique to Mottisfont.

The night before christmas Mottisfont, located near Romsey, is one the National Trust’s most popular properties: an 18th century house with a medieval priory at its heart, surrounded by beautiful riverside gardens. Mottisfont offers a year-round programme of exhibitions and events, and Christmas is always a highlight. From 24 November – 6 January (excluding 24 and 25 December), 10am-4pm, scenes from the much-loved poem ‘The Night Before Christmas’ will be brought to life around the house and grounds, with exquisitely decorated rooms and a festive family trail.

A team of garden florists will make sure you’re given a festive welcome with outdoor decorations, from giant wreaths on the entry gates to floral displays on the bridges that lead you into the grounds. Follow pathways illuminated by decorated lanterns to discover Father Christmas’s sleigh in front of the house; and, of course, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen – all crafted from willow. Inside the house, oversized books and set-dressed rooms will take you through each verse of the poem, from children’s dreams to hints of Father Christmas’s impending visit. And, unlike the poem, the mice are definitely stirring here, hidden in nooks and crannies. Spot a carolling choir, tiny Christmas helpers, and little robed monks hinting at Mottisfont’s medieval past. Rooms will be enhanced by luxurious, traditionally-styled decorations, with festive flower arrangements, mantelpieces draped with dramatic swags, and towering trees sparkling with hundreds of baubles.

A 14ft tree, surrounded by a pile of children’s presents, will take centre stage in Mottisfont’s celebrated Whistler Room as a grand finale. Families can follow in Father Christmas’s footsteps around the grounds with an active trail, great for warming up on cold days. Take part in Santa’s sack race, throw some presents down a chimney, and visit Father Christmas’s workshop

Another classic Christmas tale is being brought to life at Uppark, whilst at Hinton Ampner there’s foul play afoot with a festive murder mystery. The Vyne and Mompesson House are celebrating Christmas from centuries gone by, and at Sandham Memorial Chapel’s cosy craft workshops you can make unique gifts and decorations. There are family activities at all National Trust places in the local area, including the New Forest base camp and Winchester City Mill. National Trust shops feature traditional and contemporary Christmas ranges for all ages and pockets, including locally made food, drink and artisan gifts. Tea-rooms are serving a new winter menu, featuring delicious homemade treats using ingredients from our own kitchen gardens and local producers. Each festive day out you enjoy supports the National Trust’s work as a charity looking after special places for future generations to enjoy. ©Top left Photo National Trust - David Sell ©Photo Below National Trust - Oskar Proctor

Expect to see roadside stalls displaying an appetising aroma of satays, noddle and rice dishes, as well as sophisticated restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. Then there’s Borneo - a great destination with something to offer everyone, from soft adventures to wildlife encounters. The Malaysian portion is an exotic paradise comprised of two states, Sabah and Sarawak, boasting extraordinary landscapes and ancient tribes. A visit to the majestic Mount Kinabalu or the lush green rainforests of Sandakan should be high on any itinerary. Sandakan is also home to the wild men of Borneo – the beautiful orang-utan – which are undoubtedly one of the destination’s biggest draws. A must-do excursion is a full day tour to see these endearing creatures at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Visitors enjoy a guided walk to the feeding platform where the animals are fed twice a day, as they are prepared for a life back in the wild. There are further opportunities to spot wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, hornbills and monitor lizards during a cruise along the Kinabatangan River. YOUR FIRST STOP FOR LUXURIOUS WOMENSWEAR Velvet & Rose arrived on Chapel Street in Petersfield in March 2018 and has already become a staple clothing boutique within the town. Owner Shirley Leader had previously worked at Procter & Gamble amongst other companies, so has over twenty years of experience with high-end beauty brands such as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, OPI and Max Factor. Shirley’s prior experience with indulgent brands gave her a fantastic understanding of what women like, so with her eye for what looks good and an interest in setting up her own retail business, Shirley went to look at a premises in Petersfield in December, and things moved swiftly from there! With a background in working with marketing, Shirley quickly learnt that networking and speaking to other shop-owners was the best

way to get retail advice, and from there she began sourcing brands to stock in the shop. The name of the shop came into fruition from Shirley’s want to convey softness, beauty and luxury… and so Velvet & Rose was born. Velvet & Rose prides itself on stocking only a few of each item, so that each piece feels truly glamorous and one of a kind. Shirley is also hugely passionate about sourcing sustainable fabrics, from vegan leather to organic cotton, and that passion is evident through the beautifully designed shop, which radiates luxury from the wooden floors to the bespoke crystal chandelier above the till. With a supportive community behind her, plenty of repeat customers who can’t resist a luxurious splurge, and Shirley’s fantastic range of clothing at good prices, Velvet & Rose has quickly established itself as a must-visit shop

Spice up your G&T this Christmas with one of these festive flavoured gins! There is no denying it that the ubiquitous gin and tonic has been a summertime staple! But, that doesn’t mean we should avoid drinking it within the Winter months! Gin has become one of the fastest selling spirits across the UK, with fruited gins being the perfect winter beverage. One of our favourite festive gins is the locally made Cherokee Gin, produced by a company in Clanfield called Corner 53. The recipe draws inspiration from Tennessee Whisky producers in the 1800’s who would use the maple-charcoal filtration process to create a whisky that incorporates a distinctive, smoky and sweet taste. Corner 53 use the same process but instead, create gin. The maple flavoured gin includes the essences of fresh orange peel, pear and apple alongside an earthy vanilla essence. This concoction sits well with Indian or elderflower tonic. The Copeland, Winter Limited Edition Spiced Apple and Blackcurrant Gin is also a favoured

drink of ours. They create a Winter spice wonder, by combining both ingredients and mixing it with cinnamon to ensure a fruity but warm flavouring. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and charred orange. If you prefer, you could also add a sweetened pear. You can serve with ice, or heat to create a warm texture. This is a gin which will enlighten your pallet delightfully due to the variety of fruity festive flavours it offers.

Spiced Apple and Blackcurrant, £39.95 Copeland Gin. Buy online at:

The Winter Wassail is a great dry gin, produced at the Winchester Distillery. This gin is an ideal festive beverage due to the variety of flavours it offers. It is rich in juniper and spices as well as fresh Bramley apple, quince and whole cranberries. Winter Wassail can be served with tonic water, sparkling apple juice or, if you prefer, you could also add, hot apple or Cranbury Juice to enjoy as a Winter warmer. It is the perfect tipple to accompany you while you sit by a hot roaring fire this Winter.

Winter Wassail Gin, £36.95 Winchester Distillery, Manor Factory, Old Alresford, Hampshire, SO249DH. Also available from Fareham Wine Cellar, 55 High St, Fareham PO16 7BG.

That said, if you prefer a plain traditional gin, you can always create a wintery vibe by adding a flavoured mixer. For instance, Ginger Ale blends perfectly with gin. Garnish with root ginger and a sprig of rosemary to finish. With the topic of gin on the radar! We have included our favourite festive gin cocktail for you to try - this being the Hot Negroni.

Cherokee gin, £35.00, Corner 53, Available from

Lottery Fund initiative). This money was used to renovate and fit out The Space. The award however, was contingent upon PYT providing £20,000 towards the work, meaning that urgent fundraising was required. The building is now fully operational – though some refurbishment projects await further fund-raising effort!

PETERSFIELD YOUTH THEATRE: A SPACE FOR Petersfield Youth Theatre was founded in 1990. It is a registered charity working to advance the education in music and theatrical arts among children and young people. The company is run mainly by volunteers who employ theatre and education practitioners to direct productions, workshops and projects. As well as producing two shows a year, in September and at Christmas, PYT run termly workshops for all ages. Years 1 to 6 can take part in Learn, Rehearse and Perform, an introduction to theatre and music, and older members 7+ are offered a series of musical theatre performance skills workshops. In addition an annual Easter Project

is run for non-members as well as members. This usually takes the form of a challenge to produce a piece of musical theatre in four days to perform to family and friends. A Summer School provides further opportunities for younger members and non-members to build on their theatre skills. PYT pushes the boundaries of theatre for young people, offering experiences of the highest possible standard and encouraging them to develop their teamwork and communication skills as well as self-discipline, thereby building their self confidence. The Friends of Petersfield Youth Theatre was set up in 1997 and their financial support has provided invaluable equipment for the group. In 2001 the Ron Bowler Memorial Fund was launched in recognition of the wonderful support that Ron gave to the Youth Theatre. In 2007 PYT announced its intention to find a suitable building from which to deliver its year round activities. The search for this venue ‘The Space’ was exhaustive and for some years appeared impossible. However the ideal building was found in 2010 and a lease signed in January 2011 – PYT’s 21st Birthday year. A most welcome birthday present was the granting of a £60,000 award from the Jubilee People’s Millions (A Big

To celebrate twenty one years of PYT, the group put on a cabaret style concert of music and dance at Chichester Festival Theatre. Twenty One was excellently received by the sell-out audience and won the Youth Theatre many new supporters. Most recently, the production of Les Misérables in 2011, Miss Saigon and High School Musical in 2013 and West Side Story and The Jungle Book in 2014 proved to be sell-out performances. The group are not afraid to take on more challenging works, and Leonard Bernstein’s Candide in 2016 was a case in point. Audiences have also been enthusiastic about Honk! In 2017 and this year’s production, the highly rated Guys and Dolls was extremely well received. The Youth Theatre will shortly be performing Oliver! at the Petersfield Festival Hall between 18 and 22 December. PYT membership is open to young people from school year group 1 up to the age of 23. Young people come from as far as Denmead to the South, Alton to West, Petworth to the East and Haslemere to the North. Samantha’s skincare dream has come true

These last few years have been quite a journey for skincare entrepreneur Samantha Worsey. In April 2015 she lined up a small selection of homemade, natural soaps on a Southsea market stall, to see what would happen. Three months later, she left her job to go full time as the director of Southsea Bathing Hut - natural skincare from the seaside. “I started making soap as a hobby,” Samantha says. “When I read about Portsmouth’s forgotten soap-making heritage in the local paper, I thought there was a business idea in that. People loved my soaps and asked me to make other types of skincare. I started experimenting with different vegan, cruelty free products and haven’t stopped!”

Southsea Bathing Hut has won accolades including The Beauty Shortlist, International Beauty Awards and Green Parent Natural Beauty Awards. Last summer, Samantha realised her dream of opening a skincare apothecary on Southsea’s Albert Road.

“I love imagining all those people on Christmas morning, opening presents we’ve made.” “We make everything on the premises and, with a permanent roof over our head, we can offer plastic free options, grow our range further and run workshops for people who share our passion.”

those people on Christmas morning, opening presents we’ve made. From all the new faces we always see in January, I know they’re received with as much love as they’re given. Which is quite right, because love is our special ingredient.”

Christmas is a busy time for Southsea Bathing Hut. Samantha says, “I love imagining all

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE OPENING A SAVINGS ACCOUNT Setting aside money for unexpected emergencies is a part of life. Mortgage or rent payments, food and utilities, a failed MOT or an unexpected vet bill can all effect how much money you can afford to save each month. However, if you are able to save regularly, growing your own nest egg is a prudent thing to do. If you have been thinking about opening a savings account, but are not sure where to start, we have put together four points to consider. 1. Set yourself a savings goal: Those who set themselves a target, or have something specific they are saving for, usually save £550 more a year than those who don’t, claim the Government’s savings arm NS&I. Defining your savings goals will help you understand your savings needs and can steer you towards appropriate accounts. If you open an account that suits your savings plan, it can help you reach your goals more quickly and efficiently. There are a range of savings accounts on the market, such as easy access accounts and ISA’s, each of which has their own features and suitability. And, while setting a goal isn’t strictly necessary, it may help spur you on! 2. Shop around but don’t forget, loyalty can pay off too: Treat savings accounts in the same way you would your internet or gas provision – look at a range of provider’s savings account rates and compare them. By doing so, you can establish which account will give you a better return in interest. Visiting comparison websites such as Which? and Money Saving Expert is a good starting point for anyone looking for a savings account which is tailored to their needs. Some banks and building societies also reward a customers’ loyalty if they decide to open a savings account with them. Some offer their higher interest rates on ‘linked accounts’ or ‘member accounts’, which can only be opened if you are an existing customer of the bank or building society. 3. If the rate seems too good to be true, it may be an introductory for a limited time: Introductory account rates are usually higher, to encourage new customers to open an account. Unfortunately, these rates may only last for a set amount of time - typically 12 months. After this period, the rate may well drop.

4. The longer you commit your money to a savings account, the better the rate of interest: Shorter term, or ‘easy-access’ savings accounts usually provide instant access to your money and allow frequent withdrawals. These accounts tend to have lower interest rates. Alternatively if you open a ‘long-term’ savings account, with restrictions on withdrawals, the interest rates can be higher. As a rule of thumb, interest rates increase the longer you ‘tie-up’ your money. Some ‘long-term’ savings accounts allow only limited withdrawals or no withdrawals at all within an agreed time period. This makes them an unsuitable choice of account if you are saving for an emergency fund or a short-term goal. If you are unsure about which accounts are suitable for your savings plans, visit your local Newbury Building Society branch and speak to a qualified savings adviser. Visit our Winchester Branch (143 High Street, Winchester, SO23 9AY), call us on 01962 852716 or email

An ‘introductory rate term’ should never be hidden from you. With this in mind, it is always a good idea to thoroughly check the account’s terms and conditions before you sign any agreement. You can always set up a reminder to review your savings account when the introductory term is about to end.
