I just love this time of the year, when the shorter days are compensated by the anticipation of the festive season to come. It is a time of friends and families gathering to enjoy delicious food and each other’s company, a time to reconnect. Once you have completed your whirlwind shopping trips, wrapping and hiding gifts away and food preparation, you can really relax and snuggle up by the warmth and comfort of an open fire, with the latest issue of Beautiful South magazine… Many of us enjoy a tasty turkey at Christmas and it is good to know that local producers like Alex and Simon Bridger of Ashford Farm near Petersfield, ensure that their turkeys have enjoyed a long grown, good and happy life outside all day. Read about their family farm and their 11 yearold son Henry who has already decided a life on the land will be his future. From food to the other important element of the festive season, we explore the ever popular option of the watch as a possible gift or style statement. Even with constant access to the time via our mobiles, the watch has become an essential fashion accessory and our Time Piece article will

show you that there is a watch for every occasion and for everyone - for him, for her and unisex watches. Take a look at our Gentleman’s Notebook for warm winter wardrobe ideas, reflecting the return of timeless tweed and chunky knits. Complement the look with the right scent for the festive season with our featured aftershaves. Our lead interview features man of faith, football’s finest Linvoy Primus MBE, who tells us why he loves the South so much and can truly call it home. But if you are longing to slip those summer clothes back on again and enjoy some winter sun and warmth, then take a look at our Escape to Thailand, where we will take you on an exotic journey to one of the world’s most vibrant and colourful destinations. So relax, dream and enjoy all that the winter season has to offer. With all good wishes for a joyful, happy and peaceful festive season for all of us at Beautiful South,

Denise Lloyd Denise Lloyd, Managing Director

style insider Follow our formula for surviving the polar chill in style! With Beautiful South’s layer friendly fashion advice, we can give you the building blocks for a warm, trend setting winter wardrobe this season...

Resist the urge to grab the thickest jumper in your wardrobe. Start with the staple piece of a beautiful fitted polo neck, adding balance to your look with a hint of simplicity and sophistication.

With all these layers we can sometimes feel as though our winter attire is not as flattering as we might hope. Why not add a neutral strapped belt to the top of your coat to clinch the waist, creating a defined shape under your multiple layers of clothing.

2. THE CARDIGAN LOVERS: Wearing cardigans are a fashionable way to keep warm. We advise that you invest in a light fitted cardigan that will lift your turtle neck, giving you vertical slimming lines on the upper body, whilst adding a refined look to your outfit.

4. THE PERFECT ACCESSORY: Lastly, why not top your outfit off with a scarf ? Scarves are an excellent accessory to play around with, you can either wear it loose, casual, wrapped, or even a layered knot!

Wrap the season in style Scarves have well and truly earned their position in our winter wardrobe this season - but it’s not just the case of embellishing yourself in any old scarf ! For any fashion statement to look good, the quality of the product is essential to build that luxe effortless style.

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.

As the festive season looms, many of us will dwell on the past year, and determinedly decide on the new year’s resolutions. Many years ago, in 1812 one of the greatest writers in literary history was born in Portsmouth, who would go onto write a variety of literature, most notably Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and of course, A Christmas Carol – the ideal story for this time of year. We all know a ‘scrooge’ who reveals themselves around Christmas and is far from joyful about the occasion, and the phrase ‘bah humbug!’ – all of which come from the familiar tale. A Christmas Carol tells the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserable, selfish old man who despises Christmas. Those around him are getting into the

Christmas spirit, but scrooge is having none of it. He is visited on Christmas eve by ghosts, trying to save him from their fate. One night, Scrooge is shown how other’s actions have affected their spirits in the afterlife, and the consequences his actions will have, should he continue behaving the same way. After being shown a variety of things by the spirits, Ebenezer Scrooge is desperate to change his ways and redeem himself to alter the fate he is heading for. Dickens himself was born and spent his early years in Portsmouth. He lived at 393 Old Commerical Road, (originally named 1 Mile End Terrace) the first home of his parents, John and Elizabeth Dickens. The much-loved author, journalist and social commentator would later call London and Chatham home, but his birthplace still remains in Portsmouth, where much of the city’s Victorian heritage is still apparent. Portsmouth is clearly inspiring and breeds talent, as it is known for a variety of famous writers, such as Michelle Magorian, H.G Wells and Neil Gaiman. If you’re inspired by the story of A Christmas Carol by local legend, Charles Dickens, why not head to the Woodlands Hall, in Headley Down for their production of the tale, on 15th and 16th of December? Or to The Old Vic Theatre in London throughout December 2017 and January 2018? You could even bring your very own Scrooge for a festive evening out!

Proteus Theatre are putting on a production of A Christmas Carol, showing at Woodlands Hall in Headley Down. There are two showings – one at 6.30pm on Friday 15th December, followed by a showing at 2pm on Saturday 16th. Tickets are £7.00 for Adults, £5.00 for Kids, with the option of a family of two adults and two children for £20.00. For more details call 01420 472664 or visit Or catch this timeless classic at The Old Vic Theatre in London from 18th November 2017 – 20th January 2018 with ticket prices starting from £36.00. WINTER Ah, the wonders of walking. It’s the simplest and easiest way you can improve your health and fitness. For starters, it’s free and accessible for almost anyone, without the restrictions of timetables or limits of traffic and delays! Walking is proven to improve heart health, can reduce pain, diseases such as cancer and dementia and manage high blood pressure. Your mental health can also benefit, as walking can help your brain function, leading to more productivity and inspiration. A daily walk can be a great time to think, and to wind down at the end of the day, or start the day as you mean to go on. We’re blessed with delightful countryside and beautiful surroundings in the South, no matter what the season, and walking is the perfect excuse to explore it. With pretty villages, pebble streams, rolling hills, wide valleys and huge ancient forests of Hampshire, it really is a fantastic place to walk on a winter’s day. With more routes than we can even count, it’s hard to pick just one trail for this winter, so here we have put together a couple of our favourites.

The Hangers Way… If you’re feeling brave, tackling the Hangers Way one day this winter could fix your seasonal blues. The Hangers Way is a 21 mile walking path which starts at Alton, before passing through the quaint village of Selborne, and then on through the historic market town of Petersfield, before finally finishing at Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The scenery along this route is to die for, featuring beautiful woodland and immense grassland, as well as passing a series of steepsided hills called the Hampshire Hangers. If you don’t feel up to completing the full trail, try

WA L K S training first by completing shorter stints of the route – this will help you build both your fitness and your confidence, and after a few months you may be able to go the full 21 miles!

St Swithun’s Way… Follow the 34 mile St Swithun’s Way from Winchester to Farnham on this incredible historical walk through the picturesque Hampshire and Surrey countryside. This trail is particularly interesting as it gives the walker the unique opportunity to visit numerous churches with pilgrimage connections, making it a truly fascinating experience. The walk begins at the Winchester Cathedral before heading east through the Itchen Valley towards New Alresford. This initial section of the walk includes a long waterside stretch along the River Itchen, passing through the idyllic village of Itchen Abbas as you go. If you wish to do a shorter route, stopping here would mean you had walked 5 miles, and would allow you to have a delightful lunch in The Plough, a gorgeous pub serving heavenly light lunches. Continuing on to the next section takes you from New Alresford to Alton, along winding country lanes and through a couple of peaceful woodland stretches. You will also pass through the village of Chawton - home to Jane Austen! From Alton you follow the River Wey through Bentley, before finishing at Farnham in Surrey. Here you can enjoy a visit to Farnham Castle and Farnham Park where there’s 320 acres of hills, valleys, ponds and streams. No matter which route you choose this seasonn, the environment will certainly be stunning. We truly are very blessed to live where we do, so get out and enjoy it! The benefits of walking are endless, so it’s time to get some fresh air and stretch those legs out!

in 10 minutes flat… We have adapted a full party season make-up look to be low maintenance and easy to achieve… allowing you to look glamorous even with only 10 minutes to apply.

The base…

Decide what you want from your foundation. Long lasting formulas offer great coverage, however they are prone to drying out your skin so make sure you exfoliate and moisturise beforehand! Lighter, dewy products are not as long lasting but you can build them up to create the perfect look.

The blush…

As we age, we lose colour from our skin, but some strategically placed blusher can bring it back. Apply a bright powder blusher to the apples of your cheeks, and in a circular motion, brush it outwards on to your cheekbones.

Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blusher, Love Is The Drug £30.00

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Ultra Lift and Firm Makeup SPF15, 30ml, Bisque £32.00

THE POWDER… Powder is absolutely essential for party season. It keeps your make up in place, and eradicates shine so you can dance all night without getting a gleaming face! Aim for a powder that doesn’t dry your skin out though! Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder, Translucent £29.00

THE BRONZE… Following applying foundation, your skin can look one-dimensional. Use a large soft brush to apply bronzer, swirling it around the pot and then tapping off any excess. Apply in sweeping strokes under your cheekbones and up to your temples. Be careful not to apply too much, you only want the lightest of dustings! Hourglass Ambient Light Bronzer, Diffused Bronze £45.00

Brush your eyebrows and apply your chosen product to them, focusing on the arch shape and lengthening if needed. Your pencil should always have a grey undertone rather than brown, as brown can surprisingly look unnatural! Tom Ford Fiber Brow Gel, Blonde £36.00

The accent…

You need to choose either the eyes or the lips to focus on – not both – as this will make your look chicer and more effortless.

For statement lips choose a matte effect lip colour in a shade that complements your outfit, however our all time favourite is a deep burgundy red… while this may seem overly gothic, it looks so stylish and is a lot more wearable than a bright red! Keep the rest of your make up simple to truly finish off this look. Giorgio Armani Rouge D’Armani Lipstick, 404 Flamboyant £29.00

Beautiful South | November/December 2017 | 19

Beautiful South’s Denise Lloyd explores the range of cuisine available at The Running Horse.

It was a difficult decision regarding what to have for dinner as the menu was so varied. Gazing at other meals with what looked delicious as they were brought out from the kitchen made the thought on what to pick a greater challenge.

Located in the village of Littleton guests are immediately greeted by the impressive décor. Your eyes are drawn to the panelling throughout the room and you are overwhelmed by the sense of homeliness.

The dinner menu offered something for everyone. Starters and light dishes included homemade and comforting seasonal soup with bread at £6. Another option was their black pudding scotch egg, garlic and saffron mayo at £7; this was rich in flavour and a dish worth recommending. Salads were reasonably priced between £5 and £10. The healthy portions would certainly fill a gap leaving you very satisfied.

The warmth and pub vibe initiates excitement within you as you head to your table. Looking around you are fixated on the open kitchen with a curiosity on what food is causing that exceptional aroma. Staff welcome you with a friendly smile ensuring you are happily settled ready to immerse yourself with what is on offer. Their courteous approach was valued. We commenced our evening by ordering a bottle of Sancerre which was enjoyed throughout the evening. The £37.50 bottle complimented our dishes well and is an excellent French wine worth tasting.

But the mains were what enticed our table. A classic beef burger, cheese, fried onions, tomato relish and skin on fries were on offer at £12.50. Basil pesto, Isle of Wight slow roast tomato pasta for £13. My partner and I agreed the fillet and belly of pork, cabbage and bacon was delicious. The meat was mouthwateringly tender with a crisp to the outer skin. It was cooked to perfection. Parmesan fries, mixed salad and mash potato were just a few of the sides available to enjoy. We had no space for pudding as the portions were substantial leaving us very pleased with the meal. We did conclude our time in the restaurant drinking a coffee bringing a perfect ending to that sitting. The Running Horse also offers bedrooms for guests to stay. The team were so accommodating at the dinner table we had decided to book a room for the night. Our converted stable was stylish and immaculate. At every angle you would see something

contributing to the character of the room. Dressing gowns were placed on the bed and complimentary soaps presented in the bathroom. The overall experience is one my partner and I will remember. This country business needs attention from anyone desiring to have an easy escape with endless benefits. The Running Horse is open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 11pm, and Sunday, at 11am to 10:30pm. Tables and rooms can be booked by calling 01962 880218. or visit Other reviews can be found on their Trip Advisor portfolio. Bookings are now being taken for Christmas. The business will take care of your Christmas Day with an exquisite menu certain to satisfy you. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy quality time with your loved ones whilst indulging in some specially created dishes by the head chef and their team. All Christmas parties require a £10 per head deposit with pre-orders to be made 7 days prior to reservation date. Christmas Day requires a £50 non refundable deposit per person with all pre orders made by 1st December. There will be a full lunch and dinner menu available on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

WINTER COLLECTION at LRMan, 5 Lavant Street, Petersfield, Hampshire GU32 3EL

Fragrances for your Christmas wish list… There has been a lot of research over the years about what makes us attractive to our current and potential partners. Our scent, both natural and applied can play a key role in our powers of attraction and the key to smelling sweet is not only about selecting the right fragrance for

Sauvage Eau De Toilette, Dior. £105 200ml Sauvage is a radically fresh composition, which seems both raw and noble all at once. The natural ingredients evoke a sense of wideopen spaces and exploration, with crisp citrus notes and distinctly masculine woody undertones making it an eternal favourite.

yourself or partner as a gift, it can also be more about how much fragrance you put on. Less is often more, as they say. Be subtle with your scent and don’t allow it to fill the room enjoy the sweet smell of success!

Comme Des Garcons 2 Eau De Parfum. £90 100ml Comme des Garçons 2 from Comme des Garçons Parfum is a fragrance that is based on complements and contrasts, light, floral scents mix with more masculine, earthy notes, creating this unique and extremely popular parfum.

Dries Van Noten par Frederick Malle. £185 100ml

Oud Wood, Tom Ford. £155 50ml

The enduring charm of tweed returns to make this high quality fabric the new wardrobe staple for winter. Its timeless elegance and durability are equally matched by the cable stitch chunky knits that can complement both tweed pants or casual jeans. Suede boots complete the look.

Volvo S90 saloon by Wayne Gorrett

The rapid evolution of Volvo continues unabated under the confident stewardship of Chinese owners Geely as the Swedish automaker recently launched the S90 - its new flagship sedan. It is one of four current Volvo 90 family members, along with the V90 estate, the V90 Cross Country and the award-winning XC90 SUV. With a marked £8.4 billion investment, all these new Volvos began life as blank sheets of white paper. Nothing was sacred; everything had to be re-imagined from the ground up.

and steer in road conditions with clear lane markings up to speeds of 80mph. For now, the system permits hand-free ‘driving’ for up to 15 seconds, shutting off automatically if no driver involvement is detected on the steering wheel. Technology and safety abound on the S90. There’s ‘city safe’, ‘cyclist and large animal detection’, the aforementioned ‘pilot assist’ and arguably the best adaptive cruise control in the business.

In the UK, the S90 is powered by Volvo’s own all-aluminium Using styling cues from the XC90, the S90 emerges as a sleek four- 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, D4 and D5 twin-turbo diesel engines and all S90 variants offer only the eight-speed, door coupe, highlighted by a bold concave Aisin-sourced automatic gearbox – there are grille and the “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime “Front and rear furniture no manual transmissions available. A petrolrunning lights. Distinctly European, the S90 offers a diversion from its German and British are super-comfy and electric T8 twin-engine plug-in hybrid has recently become available to order. rivals.

head and legroom throughout make longdistance travel a doddle.”

If you like the XC90’s luxurious cabin then you’ll definitely adore the S90’s. The saloon looks remarkably similar on the inside, with mild revisions made to the dashboard and door panels. The dashboard is a bit slimmer and features larger wood inserts and taller air vents on the center stack, but everything else remained unchanged. The S90 raises the premium bar with a blend of natural materials and the latest technologies. Front and rear furniture are supercomfy and head and legroom throughout make long-distance travel a doddle.

There are three main trim grades, comprising Momentum, Inscription and R-Design and each has a ‘Pro’ sub-grade. Standard on the S90 is Volvo’s semi-autonomous Pilot Assist software which allows the car to accelerate, decelerate, come to a complete stop

28 | Beautiful South | November/December 2017 | MOTORING

On the road, the all-new S90 may not feel like a true European sports sedan but it does reveal a keen sporty character when asked and is light years away from Volvo’s old ‘pipe and slippers’ perception. There’s a more relaxed demeanour to it – softer, quieter and comfortable – one that becalms rather than excites. While it’s a large car, it’s no floaty land yacht especially when dynamic mode is selected at which point the Volvo flexes its muscles. It is very capable of maintaining a tight line through the twisty bits or cruising along gobbling up huge portions of motorway. The S90 isn’t as good to drive as the Jaguar XF and it isn’t quite as comfortable as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but it offers a more then acceptable compromise. It’s a truly likeable, stylish alternative to the established executive saloons and the Volvo S90 should be high up on your shortlist.

SDA Planning Case Study: Holt Farm, Dockenfield Having applied for planning permission to extend the family home and failing the advice that followed was to appeal; unfortunately the Inspector agreed with the Local Planning Authority and the appeal was dismissed. Resolute that the property was never going to be allowed to be altered to meet the changing family needs Stephen at SDA Planning was mentioned. At the time it seemed that a meeting would not hurt, but what could change? After all even the planning Inspectorate had said no! Stephen took the time to consider the planning history and what we wanted to achieve, he immediately began identifying options and strategies to overcome the hurdles that had been put in place by the previous decisions.

With Stephen’s input we were able to resubmit a revised scheme, in the full knowledge that the Council would resist granting planning permission. However, this time when the planning appeal was made the Inspector had no hesitation in siding with Stephen’s well-structured and considered argument and planning permission was allowed. Stephen managed the case from start to finish and had predicted the process perfectly. Whilst we understood there would be no guarantees there is no doubt that without him we would not be looking to extend our home and would be facing moving instead. His dedication and commitment to his profession and customer service is second to none and we are eternally grateful.

At SDA Planning we can help you achieve your planning goals even when there has been failure in the past. If you require any form of planning permission, listed building consent or find yourself faced with correspondence from Planning Enforcement give SDA Planning a call and we can do our best to ensure that your planning needs are met. to help out on the farm.’ Alex explains ‘He also loves to look after his impressive 80-90 ducks!’

is a happy Turkey! Introducing Alex & Simon from Ashford Farm With the festive season very nearly upon us, Beautiful South meet local family run business, Ashford Farm to discuss the importance of buying local free-range birds for your Christmas day meal.

by giving them a good, happy life; ‘Our animals go outside every day, and we aim to give them as free a life as we can, and reduce stress as much as possible, which we believe then reflects in each of our products.’

Ashford Farm is owned and run by Simon and Alex Bridger and their young family. Their farm is situated a couple of miles west of Petersfield, Hampshire, on the outskirts of the village of Steep.

‘The turkeys are traditionally slow grown – being slaughtered at 24 weeks, where normal supermarket bought turkeys would be slaughtered at half this time. There’s plenty of research and images to show that a slow grown bird has developed their proper bone structure and laid down muscle and fat, which leads to a far better tasting turkey. We also grow our own oats and wheat for the birds to eat.’

The farm holds a suckler herd of cows, headed by ‘Jacaranda’ the Charolais Bull which produces about 40 calves a year who then go on to be sold as store cattle around 18 months of age, with some being taken through to provide fresh quality beef boxes. The farm also has free range laying hens and a flock of sheep, but the main part of their business is their turkeys and geese. Ashford Farm are also passionate about producing fresh, quality products, and ensuring customers are safe in the knowledge that a high welfare standard is provided for their animals,

Alex and Simon appear to be the perfect partnership, with Simon running most of the farming and Alex running the business side of things as well as the two of them looking after their three young children. The couple’s eldest son, Henry, loves getting involved, even at 11 years old! ‘Henry wants to be a farmer and would be quite happy to miss school

Farming is in Simon’s blood, as his father was a pig farmer in Chichester. As one of four children, Simon and his siblings would often fight over who would rear the calves! This could not be further from the truth for Alex, who has not come from a farming background at all, and has married into it. She takes care of the business side, including quality control of the turkeys and the farm paperwork, although she says she is ‘chief bottle feeder’ for the lambs. As a local independent business since 1998, Ashford Farm appreciate their new and regular customers; ‘We’re hugely grateful for the loyalty of our customers – some of which have been coming to us for almost 20 years!’ For more information call 01730 268131, visit or email:

Case Study... Conquest client Mr and Mrs Purnell felt that their kitchen had begun to look a bit dated and Conquest created a modern minimalist design with sleek lines, that has really opened up the space, making it lighter and appear larger. Mr Purnell said:

Our children have grown up and moved out, so my wife and I wanted a fresh new look that suited our style and needs. Conquest understands that each homeowner’s aesthetic tastes will differ, and so each design is personally made in order to reflect each customer’s desires and requirements. All the bespoke furniture used by Conquest is designed and handcrafted in our workshop in Hampshire and fitted throughout the UK. Mr Purnell continued: “The designers at Conquest were careful to ensure that the breakfast bar was at the exact height we required, as we do not like to be perched up too high. They even went so far as to keeping the wall-hung cabinets to a minimum and changed the cooker housing into one that was easily within reach as my wife isn’t very tall.”

Ten Year Guarantee

We are very confident of our products, giving each kitchen we design and install a ten year guarantee. All of Conquests bespoke furniture is hand-crafted in Hampshire, with much of our work in the South East including Hampshire, East and West Sussex, Kent and Greater London, with other major projects across the UK.

INVITATION FROM CONQUEST FURNITURE We invite you to arrange a personal design consultation at your home, as well as a complimentary design. Call 0800 975 1199 to make an appointment. The Conquest team will be delighted to turn your dream project in-to reality. During While ensuring that Conquest kept in mind the family’s wishes of a clean white space, our designers worked together with Mrs Purnell’s eye for colour, adding a modern element to the design with a colour scheme that not only added a sense of warmth to the kitchen, but the colours also reflected the couples inspirations from their trips to Hong Kong; the splashes of deep purple, the touch of chrome, brass artefacts and the Chinese symbols on the wall which stand for ‘health, wealth and happiness’. “We wanted to maintain a clean-white look whist being more up to date and that reflected our personal style. Richard from Conquest used a grey trim to tone with the white cabinets and then kindly took a colour match for our paint.” Mr and Mrs Purnell were delighted with the finishing result of their kitchen; it retained their wish for a clean white finish as well as incorporated a modern theme with the colour scheme, glass breakfast bar and contemporary furniture. Mr Purnell concluded:

We love our new kitchen, it is uniquely styled to reflect our individual tastes.

Thailand is a country which never ceases to amaze visitors. Discover why this popular destination is top of our list… Thailand offers visitors more than just a holiday destination – it is also a cultural treat, a scenic delight and a foodie haven all rolled into one.

From the hill country in the north, to the azure blue seas of the southern beaches, the people in Thailand are renowned for their smiling faces, warmth and charm. The country itself is a wonderful combination of ornate temples, ancient pagodas, glorious beaches, stunning mountain scenery, colourful tribes, bustling cities and buzzing nightlife – Thailand really does have it all.

44 | Beautiful South | November/December 2017 |TRAVEL

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, Thailand has something for everyone. In fact, lots of people return more than once so they can experience more of Thailand’s delights. No visit to Thailand would be complete without spending a few days exploring the buzzing capital of Bangkok. Visitors will be greeted by glistening

skyscrapers dwarfing the spires and domes of temples along the chaotic street markets and renowned nightlife. The city’s most famous landmark is the spectacular Grand Palace complex, which was the former residence of the Thai royal family and is now used for ceremonial purposes. Other places worth visiting include Wat Pho which houses a 150 foot long reclining Buddha.

“Visitors will be greeted by glistening skyscrapers dwarfing the spires and domes of temples along the chaotic street markets and renowned nightlife.” People wanting to delve further into Thai culture should head north, where they will feel like they’re in a different country to the south. The landscape, language, architecture, food and people are quite distinct in this region. A particular highlight is Chiang Mai – the Rose of the North – which is Thailand’s second largest city. It is great for those seeking soft adventure and offers everything from rafting to cycling.

Khao Lak boasts long expanses of sandy beach bordered by the mountains of the surrounding national parks; it’s the perfect place to take it easy, read a book and get back to nature. Island hopping is a popular pastime in Thailand, as the destination offers a collection of enchanting islands offering a laid-back vibe and natural beauty. Visitors can choose from idyllic Koh Samui, which offers a relaxed vibe and lots of attractions including a 39ft high Big Buddha shrine; Koh Phangan, known for its famed Full Moon Parties; Koh Tao, home to stunning beaches and well regarded by dive enthusiasts; and the Phi Phi Islands, made famous after featuring in the 2000 movie ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. People wanting to do something a bit unique can head to Elephant Hills in Khao Sok National Park, where they can interact with elephants by preparing their food, feeding them their meals and scrubbing them clean.

History enthusiasts will be interested in visiting River Kwai to discover Second World War landmarks including Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway which runs to the Burmese border. There’s so much to discover throughout this enchanting kingdom and once you’ve been you will want to go back. Our tailor-made Thailand itineraries are put together by Travelplanners Faraway experts, each offering the perfect introduction to the country’s main highlights. Choose from a Bangkok, Elephant Hills and Khao Lak itinerary; a Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket break; or an island hopper independent tour. Alternatively, contact us to create your own incredible Thailand holiday. Our Staff at Travelplanners have travelled extensively in Thailand and with their wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience will provide you with quality service and expert holiday advice.

The stunning beaches in the south are one of the big draws to Thailand, with many people dreaming of spending a week beside a white sandy beach fringed with swaying palms. Blessed with some of the best beaches in the world, each with its own distinct personality, visitors will find it difficult to pick just one. Phuket is aptly named the jewel in the Andaman Sea; it is Thailand’s best known island and is home to majestic mountains, rainforests and pristine beaches. It has a wide appeal due to its variety of attractions and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Winter Sleep Cycles On the surface, it may seem as though we should sleep better during the winter months, warm, cozy, snuggled up and dark outside, but it is precisely this extended darkness that disrupts our sleep patterns. Our body clocks are set to be awake in daylight and to sleep in darkness, so as the days draw in, and we go to work and come home in the dark, this dearth of natural light suppresses the release of melatonin, which plays havoc with our circadian rhythm. Melatonin is a hormone, produced by the pineal gland, which helps to control our daily sleep-wake cycles. Our circadian rhythm influences how much melatonin the pineal gland makes, and so does the level of exposure to natural daylight. Normally, melatonin levels start to rise in the mid-to-late evening; they then stay elevated for most of the night while in darkness. In the early morning, as the sun rises, they drop causing you to wake. Without this natural light, your body produces more melatonin as you don’t get the suppression that you do in the summer months, so your body doesn’t have a clear distinction between day and night. In turn, this leads to feeling sluggish, increased tiredness and more difficulty sleeping properly, once you do nod off.

The added disadvantage is that lack of natural daylight can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD Syndrome) which is a form of depression. Symptoms are a depressed state of mind, lethargy, indifference, irritability, not wanting to get out of bed, carbohydrate cravings and weight gain. Not a great deal is known about why exactly this occurs, but it is believed that lack of sunlight affects the function of the hypothalamus, which may affect both the production of melatonin and serotonin, which is the body’s ‘feel good’ hormone and lower serotonin levels are linked to depression. There are several things that you can do to help combat this. The key is to ensure that you wake to light. Otherwise, excess melatonin will leave you feeling sluggish and lazy. Try purchasing a ‘Light Therapy Alarm Clock’, these offer a steady increase of light for 20-30 minutes prior to the actual alarm, simulating sunrise. Ensure that bathroom and kitchen lights are bright so that as you get up, you enter a brightly lit room. Make a point of going for a walk outside on a daily basis, preferably at noon when the sun (if you can see it) is at its peak, the combination of exercise and a natural light source is invaluable.

When indoors, try sitting next to a window that provides natural light and if none of this is possible, consider using a ‘Light Therapy Box’. However, it is important to note that these are not recommended for people who are bipolar or have past or current eye problems such as glaucoma, cataracts or eye damage from diabetes. In the evenings, ensure you go to sleep in darkness, many studies have shown that staring at a tablet or mobile phone prior to bed is extremely detrimental to sleep patterns, read a book, lower the lights and if you live in a brightly lit area where light intrudes, consider blackout blinds. Foods that contain melatonin, contain minimal amounts but tart (sour) cherries, especially the Montmorency variety, have now been scientifically proven to have the largest concentration – “such a significant amount that it is actually enough to produce positive results in the body.” Dr. Russel Reiter of the University of Texas Health Science Center who is a distinguished researcher of melatonin, stated: “We were surprised at how much melatonin was in cherries, specifically the Montmorency variety.”
