It’s time to
TARTAN AND CHECK By Georgia Reed Tartan has held its place in our wardrobe for years. But this season, it’s having a revive. The history of tartan and checkered fashion dates back to the 16th century when the pattern was first used to create kilts in Scotland. It was used to identify different clans and regions, each with its unique tartan pattern. Fast forward to now, where it is a typical design shown every winter. Most recently seen across catwalks, designers continue to use their imagination to reinterpret the pattern. Fashion labels such as Burberry, Dior and Vivienne Westwood have experimented with checkered textures, materials, and palettes in their latest AW24 collections. So, why not try something new and see how this style can work for you? It’s time to start the New Year by injecting life, colour and fun into your wardrobe. Beautiful South Magazine has selected our top tartan picks this season; from trench coats to dresses and woollen warmers, we have you covered. We’ve also pulled together a how-to guide on styling with checks.

style insider DISCOVER BURBERRY urberry is the biggest fashion brand with the longest history of tartan. Burberry tartan is now one of the most recognised symbols in fashion, and leading the way is Burberry’s iconic trench coat. Turning the clocks back to 1856, Thomas Burberry established the brand Burberry, locally in Basingstoke, at just 21 years old. Burberry was founded on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect people from the British weather and is Hampshire-born and bred. The Burberry tartan trench first appeared in 1920, and almost 100 years later, it is a luxury wardrobe staple on all of our wish lists.
HOW TO STYLE 1. Embrace New Colours: Tartan doesn’t need to be only in reds, burgundy, and greens. Why not step out of the box and try something new? Tartan and checkered patterns are modern, with various palettes and pattern styles. 2. Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix and match different tartan patterns and try other materials. This can create a unique, eye-catching look that will turn heads. 3. Don’t Forget Accessorise: Tartan accessories like scarves, hats, and bags are a great way to incorporate the pattern into your outfit without going overboard. 4. Layer: Tartan looks great when layered. Whether looking for an under-layer or a top coat, tartan and checks often look best when layered with other items and materials.
“Whilst their items are an investment, they are timeless, classic and will last for years to come.” Every year, Burberry recreates its tartan in a way which keeps the brand at the epitome of luxury fashion. Burberry’s current Creative Director, Daniel Lee, most recently created the trench coat with faux fur-trimmed lapels and aviator touches exaggerated with softer silhouettes. Whilst nodding to the brand heritage, Burberry’s recent AW24 collection draws on equestrian styles and outdoor aesthetics with modern, cosy twists and
colour pops of yellow and blue. It’s a brand which modernises and develops whilst staying true to its roots. It’s no secret that Burberry has a luxurious price tag attached. But whilst their items are an investment, they are timeless, classic and will last for years to come. If you’re looking to style your wardrobe with checks and tartan, then look no further – you can’t beat Burberry.

The Crucial Role of Post-Exercise
xercise is vital to a healthy lifestyle, contributing to physical fitness and overall well-being. However, many tend to focus primarily on our workout routines while neglecting the equally important aspect of postexercise recovery. Proper rehabilitation techniques are essential for optimising performance, preventing injuries, and promoting long-term fitness. So, what are some active methods we can use to enhance our fitness journey? Stretching should be a fundamental part of your pre and post-exercise routine. Movements, such as static and dynamic stretches, help improve flexibility and range of motion. They also reduce tightness and prevent muscle imbalances. Incorporating stretches targeting specific muscle groups worked during your workout can be particularly beneficial for avoiding future injuries. Foam rolling, or self-myofascial release, is an effective technique for alleviating tightness and reducing the risk of injury. Using a foam roller to apply pressure to specific muscle groups can release knots, improve flexibility, and enhance blood flow. Enhancing blood flow is essential post-workout as our muscles need more blood to recover.
Sauna sessions are a fantastic restoration option for our bodies. When you exercise, your body accumulates toxins and can become tense. Saunas promote detoxification by inducing a deep sweat, flushing out our bodies, and improving circulation. The heat also helps relax muscles, reducing postworkout soreness. Cold plunges, such as ice baths or cold showers, might sound intimidating, but they offer substantial benefits. The cold water constricts blood vessels, reducing inflammation and aches. It also stimulates the release of endorphins, providing a natural mood boost. Alternating between hot saunas and cold plunges, known as contrast therapy, can be especially effective in promoting recovery, not to mention it’s a great way to cool down after a sweaty cardio session.
Saunas promote detoxification by inducing a deep sweat, flushing out our bodies, and improving circulation. Contrary to popular belief, recovery doesn’t always mean complete rest. Active rehabilitation involves low-intensity exercises like walking, cycling, or light jogging. These activities maintain blood flow around your body, helping to remove waste products and deliver essential nutrients for repair. Swimming is also a fantastic form of post-exercise rehabilitation, especially for those seeking a lowimpact option.
The buoyancy of water reduces stress on joints while providing a full-body workout. Swimming encourages relaxation and helps to alleviate tension. It’s an excellent choice for individuals recovering from intense workouts or dealing with injuries. Yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to promote holistic well-being. It enhances flexibility, balance, and strength while calming the mind. Yoga can reduce stress, which is crucial for effective healing. By incorporating yoga into your routine, you aid your recovery while cultivating mental resilience and focus. Neglecting recovery can lead to diminished performance, increased risk of injury, and burnout. These methods offer diverse options to cater to individual preferences and needs. Remember that the key to recovering successfully is consistency. By incorporating these techniques into your routine, you can optimise your fitness journey, minimise the risk of injuries, and achieve long-term health and well-being. So, don’t just focus on the workout; invest in your routine and watch your fitness goals come to fruition.

treat spots and wounds, making it a powerful tool against acne-prone skin. When you feel a spot arising, dab some tea tree to help it calm. The Dr Organic Tea Tree Blemish Stick will stop spots in their tracks, making it a staple to have in your skincare emergency kit!
But with a vast amount of oils and a plethora of offerings, it’s hard to know which to reach for when standing in a shop or browsing online. Here we share our four favourite oils that will transform your beauty routine forever… 1. Rosemary oil has taken over TikTok in recent months, with users sharing videos of their hair transformation journey after embracing the product. Backed by hairstylists, Rosemary does, in fact, deeply moisturise, soothe scalp irritation and stimulate hair growth. TikTok users looking to host healthier hair or those experiencing pregnancy hair loss and PCOS symptoms are reaching for the Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Growth Hair Oil. This oil (or similar) can be found in your local beauty retailer or Amazon; just make sure to check if you need to mix it with a carrier oil like Jojoba or coconut. Apply a few small drops to the scalp and comb through to the ends a couple of hours before hopping in the shower to wash it out. 2. We’ve all been there. The dreaded under-skin blemish has started to anger me just in time for the big party this weekend; now what?! Commonly used for acne spots, tea tree oil has become a cornerstone in natural beauty and wellness due to its potent antiseptic properties and ability to
3. For those just beginning their journey with essential oils, navigating the selection at a nearby farmers market or wellness shop can seem daunting. Hälsa Cosmetics is an independent cosmetics retailer and treatment studio based in Petersfield, Hampshire, selling some of the best organic and natural products, including essential oils. One of their best-sellers is the Neal’s Yard Organic Beauty Oil. This certified organic and vegan-approved food supplement is rich in omega-3 with omegas 6 and 9. Take one teaspoon (5ml) daily with food for beautiful-looking skin, hair and nails. Head to their store to browse their full range at No.1 The Square, Petersfield. 4. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Oil is one of Beautiful South’s fan favourites, built to be a rich, restorative anti-ageing treatment. Made with derivatives of oceanic plants and marine biological active ingredients, this facial oil reinforces the skin’s natural hydration barrier, thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A powerful, natural treatment that leaves skin soft and nourished with an age-defying glow.

A GUIDE TO NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS It’s 2024, and time to reflect on the past year, as well as looking ahead to how you want the next year to go. Creating and crafting New Year’s resolutions is a great way to do that. According to research, 53% of men in the UK made New Year’s resolutions in 2023, and this year will likely be no different.
Many of us look to start the New Year with a positive mindset and a clear goal. New Year’s resolutions are a fantastic opportunity to improve your health, hobbies, relationships, and happiness. However, achieving these resolutions can be challenging, especially when life gets busy. Many of us create these every January – but don’t stick to them.
So, Beautiful South Magazine is here to share some top tips on how to create and stick to your New Year’s resolutions for 2024 and give you some inspiration along the way.
Create your resolution… 1. Choose a specific goal. Instead of being vague, such as “get fitter” or “spend less”, try to make your goal as clear and measurable as possible. Be specific and give yourself a timeline. This will help you track your progress and evaluate your success. 2. Limit your resolutions. Having too many resolutions can be overwhelming and less motivating. It’s best to focus on one or two that are most important to you instead of changing everything in one go. 3. Make sure your goal is attainable. While it is fantastic to challenge yourself and aim high, you need to be realistic and consider your current situation and resources. Aim for something you’d feel great at achieving.
16 | Beautiful South | New Year Edition 2024 | GENTLEMAN’S NOTEBOOK
4. Write down your goal and plan. Writing down your resolutions and the steps you will take to achieve them can increase your commitment and motivation. Saying them out loud, writing them down, and sharing them with somebody else will help you stay accountable and on track.
What your New Year’s resolution could be… 1. Exercise more: This is a popular one! It is a common resolution that benefits your physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise can boost your mood, energy, strength, and immunity. It’s important to find an exercise that you enjoy. Why not trial some of the brilliant gyms and activities in the area? There are plenty, including cross-fit training at Hayling Island Functional Fitness and outdoor fitness classes with Bootcamp Petersfield. 2. Learn a new skill or hobby: This is a fun and rewarding resolution that can help you expand your creativity, confidence and knowledge. Learning a
/ THE GENTLEMAN’S NOTEBOOK 4. Find ways to make yourself accountable. One way to do this is to tell someone else about your resolution and ask them to check in on you regularly. This can be a friend, a family member, a coach, or a support group. Knowing somebody is watching you can increase your sense of motivation. 5. Be flexible and adaptable. Sometimes, things might not go as planned, or you might encounter some difficulties or setbacks. Instead of giving up or feeling guilty, you can adjust your goal or plan according to the new situation. For example, if you get sick or injured, you can take a break and resume your resolution when you recover. new skill or hobby can enrich your life, make you happier, and connect you with like-minded people. Life can be too short not to give new things a try. Have you ever considered learning a new language or trying a new course, such as cooking? We’re lucky to have some wonderful activities around us in the area. Find your interest, and search for a local class or group that suits you. 3. Look after your well-being: An important resolution that can have a real impact on your overall health and happiness. Improving your mental well-being can reduce stress and anxiety and increase your positivity and resilience. These can be anything from practising mindfulness, reading more books, taking more walks or start journalling. It is important to take care of yourself, and taking the right steps can be beneficial.
“Learning a new skill or hobby can enrich your life, make you happier, and connect you with like-minded people.”
How to stick to them… Once you have created your resolutions, sticking to them throughout the year is the biggest challenge. Here are some top tips to help you: 1. Break down your goal into smaller steps. Sometimes, your resolution might seem too big or too far away to reach. To avoid feeling overwhelmed or discouraged, you can break down your goal into smaller and more manageable steps. For example, if you want to read 50 books in a year, you can set a monthly goal of reading four books or a weekly goal of reading one book. 2. Make your goal more fun and enjoyable. It will help make your resolution fun and less of a chore. You can reward yourself with something you like after completing a step or reaching a milestone. 3. Remind yourself why you are doing it. The most powerful resolutions have a meaning behind them, making them worth doing for you. Whenever you feel tempted to give up, remind yourself of why you set it in the first place and remind yourself of the benefits it has for you. You will feel brilliant once you achieve your goal.
So whatever resolutions you decide to do this year, make 2024 the best yet.
A GLIMPSE INTO THE WORLD OF
Antique restoration is a fascinating and timeless art, offering new life to pre-loved items. Georgina Harris, a skilled gilder and restorer from Waterlooville, is a testament to this enduring craft. In our latest producer profile feature, Georgina shares her journey, expertise, and the meticulous processes involved in bringing antiques back to their former glory. As a specialist in gilt mirrors, fine picture frames, and gilt furniture, Georgina has carved a niche in the realm of restoration. Her expertise extends to painting restoration, iconography, and decorative finishes, showcasing a diverse skill set honed over more than eight years. Georgina's journey began in a traditional frame maker's workshop, where she learned the importance of preserving traditional skills. "I learnt my craft and the importance of passing down these traditional skills to the next generation in order to produce
and restore fine works. I then went on to work as an Art Conservator in the historically rich city of Seville before settling in the Hampshire area, which is where I’m now based full-time. I pride myself in knowing that the work I do today will be admired long after my time,” she reflects. Advising readers, "Leaf lines (overlapping of gold leaf) can tell you if you have a gilt piece worth restoring. If you have something that has missing crumbly plaster-looking elements or perhaps the gold is looking a dull greenish-brown colour in some places, this could be a sign of a past restoration that may need saving."
“I pride myself in knowing that the work I do today will be admired long after my time.” Georgina's passion and dedication to antique restoration illuminates the artistry and skill involved in this venerable craft. She cautions against DIY repairs on valuable or sentimental antiques, recommending professional consultation to avoid further damage. Her work not only preserves historical pieces but also ensures their continued admiration for generations to come. Georgina offers a range of services, each tailored to breathe new life into various antiques, including: Picture Frame & Mirror Restoration: She skillfully restores ornate frames, addressing issues like missing decoration or the need for re-gilding.
Furniture Restoration: Gilded furniture, prone to deterioration due to frequent handling, often requires careful re-gilding. Paintings Restoration: Georgina tackles the challenges of dirt accumulation, yellowing varnishes, and canvas damage, offering cleaning, patching, and retouching services. Interior Gilding & Decorative Finishes: Her expertise extends to applying 24K gold leaf on ceilings, walls, and architectural embellishments, adding elegance to any decor. Based in Waterlooville, Hampshire, Georgina welcomes enquiries for any gilded object restoration. She can be reached at her workshop via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone at 07402 103382. More information is available on her website at https://georginaharris.my.canva.site.

From the good, bad and retrospectively ugly, interior trends are ever-changing. With a new year upon us, we’re diving into the exciting world of interior design to explore what’s hot and happening in 2024. Now, this article isn’t to imply that you should completely remodel your home to resemble one of an Instagram celebrity, but rather make subtle improvements that will bring you joy for years to come.
So you’re here because you’re craving change.
Without further ado and using a completely subjective point of view, here are Beautiful South’s Interior trends for 2024…
COLOURS ON NEUTRAL BASES NODDING TO THE 90’S
Brits are finally challenging the notion that neutrals don’t have to be beige and boring. It’s all about striking a balance between calm neutrals and vibrant patterns. Picture a serene backdrop of whites, greys, or beiges adorned with lively, colourful patterns.
Let’s face it: we’re all secretly pining for the good old days of the 90s. 2024 is the year where we’re unapologetically nodding to the 90s and bringing back some of that retro charm. Think bold colours, funky patterns, and a large and lairy disco ball.
Experiment with bold, oversized florals, playful geometrics, or even abstract designs. Whether it’s through wallpaper, upholstery, or accessories, injecting a burst of colour and pattern into neutral spaces can instantly elevate the overall aesthetic. It’s the perfect way to add personality to your home without going overboard.
Neon accents, quirky art and geometric shapes are making a comeback. Incorporate naughties chic in unexpected places – from throw pillows to statement furniture pieces. Maybe keep those lava lamps in the loft though; we don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves.
“Embrace imperfections, celebrate character, and let the history of each piece shine through.”
RESTORING ANTIQUE FURNITURE This one feels like a bit of a cheat because, in the fast-paced world of interior design, one trend that stands the test of time is the restoration of antique furniture. Like many years before and many years to come, there will always be appreciation for the craftsmanship and timeless elegance of pieces from bygone eras.
MUD-LAUNDRY ROOMS This trend is all about practicality. Muddy dog? Mud-laundry room. Post-holiday pile of washing? Mud-laundry room. In 2024, we’re saying goodbye to mud being stepped through the house and laundry taking over communal spaces. Situated near the back or side door, mud-laundry rooms are multifunctional spaces that not only serve as laundry hubs but also as mudrooms, providing a stylish transition from the great outdoors to the cosy indoors.
Give new life to that vintage dresser that you found on Facebook Marketplace or that weathered wooden chair in the loft. Embrace imperfections, celebrate character, and let the history of each piece shine through. Mixing antique furniture with modern elements creates a harmonious blend that will make you fall in love with your home all over again.
Picture this: a mosaic of tiles adorning the floors, practical storage solutions for your laundry essentials, and a dog wash and dry station. Add some greenery for a perfect blend of utility and aesthetics, and use it as a space that gives the ‘get out of jail free’ card when it comes to tidiness. Meet Katherine Plumb, the founder of KJP KJP is an independent, print-focused homeware brand with an ambition to grow slowly and responsibly. Born in Petersfield and now a global success, Beautiful South sat down with founder Katherine Plumb to hear more… Tell us about you, Kat… Growing up, I always thought I would do something academic, but events in my personal life saw me lean into creative work. I was born and raised in Petersfield and stayed there until I was eighteen before moving to London to study print, knit and weave design at Central Saint Martins, a great school in London for textiles. I loved the creative freedom and satisfaction of knit, but I knew print had more future-proof career opportunities. I stayed in London after graduating uni, working in a restaurant to tie me over as I pursued my printing hobby. I secured a small space in a screen printing studio in Brixton, where I’d continuously make prints. In truth, I was making too much, and I didn’t know what to do with it. I started selling at DIY markets in Hackney and Peckham, and soon enough, local shops began to reach out and ask to sell my prints. I had the honour of hosting an installation at the V&A Museum. I needed to credit my prints to something, and with that, KJP began.
brand are still very much the same. We’ve outsourced to responsible, local manufacturers that we can visit here in Europe, who were able to work with on smaller production runs to keep waste/excess stock to a minimum. Yes, this meant that production was slower than if we’d outsourced production to factories in Asia or the Middle East, but it ensured that our products were being made with a clear conscience and a far smaller carbon footprint. What inspires your work? Our minds are very easily influenced, so I make a conscious effort not to look at what other brands are printing, as I don’t want to subconsciously be inspired by them. We don’t believe in changing with the seasons and trends, especially not for homewares. Instead, we want to make pieces that will be kept and loved for years to come - which is why you won’t see us constantly launching exciting new products. How have you made your business a success? I’ve grown to love the Swedish style after living here for five years. My prints lend to the aesthetically pleasing neutral interiors, as they act as accessories that bring colour and personality to a space. Prints can be super intimidating if you’re starting out, for example, deciding how they will work in your home. Whether looking for forever flowers to bloom throughout your living room or craving some renter-friendly personality to make your apartment feel like home, our Instagram page shows you exactly how our products can work for you.
“We want to make
When was KJP born? After two years in London, my boyfriend (now husband) and I moved to Sweden, where he was born. Despite my prints finally getting the exposure they deserved in the UK, moving felt like starting all over again - a new set-up, a new network, a new country!
pieces that will be kept and loved for years to come”
I stopped printing for eight months, mainly because I was navigating new seasons (the extremely short, dark days of a Swedish winter) and the limited space to print. Eventually, I made a business plan ( for any creatives out there, you’ll know the struggle of trying to be business-minded), and I found a horrid studio space in a random garage where the owner didn’t care about me getting it dirty... it was perfect. When the brand began in 2018, I was screen printing and producing all the home textile products myself. I designed, printed, and hosted workshops to keep the profits where I needed them. Suddenly, there was a turning point, and I stopped printing myself, moved to a larger, nicer studio (this time with a toilet), and began to outsource. Products like my cushions take hours to make, so outsourcing production made a huge difference, as it allowed me to get back the time I was losing so that I could be more creative and focus on new designs. While outsourcing meant a few things had to change, the core values of the
Which item is your favourite from your collection? Our checkered flower towel has been our most popular product overall, although we’re sadly discontinuing this style after a few good years together. It proved to be a little too successful and has been copied by many larger brands! However, for the winter months, I think our throws are just perfect. This year will be a big year for us, and we’re working on lots of new designs for our community. My favourite products right now are our brand-new ruffled cushions that officially launched in December, and we have a new collection of kitchen textiles coming for Spring that I think will be pretty popular! Where can we find you? You can find us via our website, or Instagram @shop.KJP. When you sign up for the newsletter, you always get a head start warning when any new products drop and sales. Organising your home for a blissful 2024 ur fast-paced modern life can be overwhelming, and our homes should serve as a sanctuary where we can relax. When they are organised and reflect our style and personalities, then they become a true haven. So, as we enter 2024, here are my top tips for creating a luxurious living space for a calm and relaxing home.
Declutter and organise – whatever comes into your home should be actioned, have a place to go or leave. Following this principle ensures clutter does not develop. Creating systems in your house to keep on top of daily life is essential for a calm, relaxing space.
6 Artful display of treasures – add a touch of
your personality by displaying your cherished possessions as works of art. Display handbags behind glass or acrylic storage in your bedroom, heirlooms and books in elegant glass cabinets or on bespoke shelves. Family photos displayed in beautiful frames or as art on a feature wall.
2 Bespoke storage – investing in custom storage that is tailored to your needs not only helps declutter your space but adds value and elevates your home’s visual appeal. Consider bespoke cabinetry, built-in shelves and walk-in wardrobes.
A designated work/study area away from family life fosters a calmer work environment. 3 Harmonious colour – choose a colour scheme that reflects not only your style but also flows through your home. If you stay neutral, you can update season to season with the addition of cushions, throws and bedding to promote a cohesive and luxurious ambience.
technology - integrate cutting-edge 4 Incorporate technology into your home for a seamless and sophisticated living experience. Smart home systems can control lighting, temperature, and security, offering you the ultimate convenience.
Work zone – with many people still working from home, a designated work/study area away from family life fosters a calmer work environment. This also improves work/life balance, helping to stop either encroaching on the other.
8 Wellness area – creating dedicated wellness
zones contributes to a healthier lifestyle and enhances the luxurious ambience in your home. Create an area for a home gym, a yoga or meditation area that is calm and warm. Consider a spa-like bathroom with ambient lighting, luxury products and scented candles or simply a cosy reading nook.
By embracing organisation and these ideas into your home, your home will be elevated to reflect your personality. Your home will feel luxurious and calm, setting the stage for a wonderful 2024.
5 Comfortable furniture – investing in quality
and functional furniture ensures comfort and relaxation in your home. Dual purpose furniture helps with organisation, from an ottoman storage bed to a foot stool that can hold throws.

basics Christmas is over. The turkey’s been eaten, the Prosecco has run dry and we’re into our next annual ritual: The New Year health kick. While eating well can be a challenge, there’s no need to overcomplicate things. Instead, it’s all about focusing on three key things: fresh, seasonal and local, as well as getting creative in the kitchen.
Shop locally Here in Hampshire, we’re blessed with an array of high quality, independent producers, all of whom are championing the cause of buying fresh, direct from the producer. By visiting your local Hampshire Farmers’ Market or farm shop, you have the opportunity to buy as fresh as possible – whether this is a steak or salad, the nutritional value of the food in question will be much higher as a result, not to mention the reduction in food miles.
Changing with the seasons Next, think seasonal. It may be bleak outside, but during January, February, and March, there are plenty of colourful ingredients to throw into healthy recipes – opt for butternut squash, purple sprouting broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and parsnips in nutritional soups. In terms of fish and seafood, mussels, skate, and salmon are at their best at this time of year. For the days where you need something with a little more substance, roasted or stewed duck and lamb works wonders, and winter fruits can be incorporated into cakes and crumbles.
Many of these ingredients not only offer the obvious nutritional benefits, but also help the body and mind through winter’s dark days. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, help to keep your blood pressure down and improve your mood, while roasting vegetable caramelises their natural sugars – satisfying your sweet tooth without encouraging you to dive for the biscuit tin or unhealthy dessert. But it’s not only about sourcing healthy ingredients, but finding easy, quick recipes which will encourage you to embrace fresh food all year round. For some simple recipes with a local twist, check out the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets website (www.hampshirefarmersmarkets. co.uk/recipes)
ALL ABOUT TIME Another key factor which can affect your New Year health kick is time – or rather, shortage of it. A perfect solution to this age-old problem is the slow cooker, which offers a healthier, low-fat method of cooking and requires the minimum amount of effort. For many dishes, particularly soups and stews, you really can just throw all the ingredients in. Ideally you want to choose recipes where most, if not all, of the ingredients can be added at the
beginning, leaving you free to do other things. However in most cases, pasta, rice and fresh herbs will need to be added towards the end. And if you are not normally the most imaginary within the kitchen - The New Year is the perfect time to start. Whether you’re a novice or someone who typically sticks to the basics, 2024 offers the ideal opportunity to experiment with new ingredients, cooking techniques, and flavours. Challenge yourself to step outside your culinary comfort zone, try out diverse recipes, and infuse your dishes with creativity!

TO WARM YOUR
Winter soups serve as a culinary refuge when the chill of winter permeates the air and frosts the landscape.
These heart-warming concoctions are not just meals but an experience that unites warmth, comfort, and nourishment - embodying the essence of cosiness during the coldest (and often loneliest) months of the year. One of the most cherished aspects is their versatility and adaptability to local cuisines and available seasonal ingredients. Root vegetables, which store well and are often abundant during winter, form the hearty base for many recipes. Parsnips, turnips, and carrots bring sweetness, earthiness, and vibrant colours, while potatoes and squash lend a creamy texture without the need for heavy cream. If you proudly consider yourself a winter hermit, then there is a rather large chance that, just like the rest of us, you loathe the thought of getting out of your PJs to make a shop run for ingredients.
Luckily for us, using up what’s left in the pantry and boiling the bone broth leftover from Christmas make the foundations for a great winter soup. Both hearty and nutritious, a minestrone soup is a super-easy, moreish-ly tasty crowd-pleaser that cleverly uses up the vegetables you already have in the house. Give this tried and tested Jamie Oliver recipe a go…
INGREDIENTS: • 1 clove of garlic • 1 red onion • 2 carrots • 2 sticks of celery • 1 courgette • 1 small leek • 1 large potato • 1 x 400 g tin of cannellini beans • 2 rashers of higher-welfare smoked streaky bacon • Olive oil • ½ teaspoon dried oregano • 1 fresh bay leaf • 2 x 400 g tins of plum tomatoes • 1 litre organic vegetable stock • 1 large handful of seasonal greens, such as savoy cabbage, curly kale, chard • 100 g wholemeal pasta • ½ a bunch of fresh basil, optional • Parmesan cheese
METHOD: Peel and mince garlic and onion. Trim and chop carrots, celery, and courgette and add to a large bowl. Trim leek, wash and slice into 1cm slices and add to the bowl. Dice the potato, drain the beans and slice the bacon. In a saucepan, heat two tablespoons of oil and fry the bacon until golden. Add the garlic, onion, vegetables, oregano, bay leaf and sauté until tender (about 15 minutes). Add the potato, beans, vegetable stock and tomatoes, crushing them with the back of the spoon. Cover to bring to the boil, then simmer for 30 minutes. Discard any hard parts of the greens and chop. Crush the pasta in the packet. Add both to the pan and cook for 10 minutes. The trick is to be soft enough to eat but still have a bite to it. Season to taste with salt and black pepper, add basil leaves (if using) and serve with a grating of parmesan and a slice of wholemeal bread. Dunk and sip away!

Creative Plant-based food, made with Love Welcome to Jo’s Kitchen I’ve worked as a Chef in Petersfield for the past five years. Since moving from London in 2018, I’ve run my own plant-based takeaway restaurant, run cookery workshops, hosted supper clubs and held talks & tasting sessions. I now run Jo’s Kitchen, where we specialise in vibrant, fresh and seasonal catering for events, personal celebrations and retreats.
My passion for wholefood nutrition was driven originally by the desire to heal my own inflammatory condition without the long-term use of conventional drugs and has evolved into a joyous obsession with the limitless world of creative plant-based cookery. Quite simply, we are what we put in. Food choices affect every single part of our physiology and the way we interact in the world. I’m very keen to drop the labels and politics that increasingly dominate our diet. Food is fuel that should taste wonderful, boost your immune system, help you live longer (and better!), and, of course, bring people together.
“Jo’s food isn’t just for vegans or vegetarians... it’s for lovers of all things delicious and nourishing!” - Sarah, Client As a Chef, I’m obsessed with the flavour, colour and endless variety that plant-based cuisine provides. As a teacher and a mother, my passion is around empowering people to make healthier choices by showing them that replacing processed food with nutrient-dense wholefood is accessible, easy and exciting. Our connection with how food reaches the table has diminished over the generations, and I’m encouraged to see a new movement of advocates for chemical-free farming and mindfully sourced produce. There’s a long way to go, but I believe that the kitchen is a wonderful place to start!
From a personal perspective, I take quite a spiritual view of an animal-free diet. But my message, at its simplest and without judgement or dogma, is let’s just enjoy real, fresh food that’s prepared with love and tastes fantastic… Happy Food! xx
Some of my favourite Winter dishes on our current menu… • Creamy celeriac & parsnip gratin with truffle oil, roast garlic & hazelnuts • Baked sweet potatoes with spiced miso butter and fresh turmeric dahl • Shredded kale & brussels sprout salad with pan-fried chestnuts, cranberries & tahini Caesar dressing • Mocha chestnut mousse with coconut cream & caramelised hazelnut crumb

two-zone climate control, heated and electrically adjustable front seats with driver’s memory, a powered tailgate, sliding and reclining rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.8-inch infotainment system with sat-nav and all the parking and driving assists you could ever need.
A practical and clever compact family EV – it’s the best Smart yet.
By Wayne Gorrett mart celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023, but the brand that brought you that easyparking, diminutive barrel of fun has come a long way in that time.
The Smart Hashtag One - its official name - is a significant step forward for a company whose range was, until very recently, limited to a pair of fairly dreadful electric city cars. The #1 is targeting the best cars in the compact EV-SUV segment, and it hopes to attract buyers with its Gen-Z-tastic name, funky looks, and competitive stats. The Smart #1 is offered with two powertrains. The standard car has a single 272hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle – and it should be more than brisk enough for most drivers. Or you can have a 428hp Brabus-engineered model with an additional electric motor powering the front wheels. That model can sprint from 0–62mph - as quickly as a BMW M3.
All Smart #1’s feature the same 66kWh battery pack which, when paired with the 272hp electric motor, offers a maximum range of up to 273 miles. The Brabus model manages a reduced 248 miles because of its extra electric motor, but both versions of the car can charge from 10–80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes as they both support 150kW DC rapid charging.
“The Smart #1 is loaded with clever technology and built exceptionally well.” There are three trims available at launch. The range-entry model is called ‘Pro+’ (from £35,950), but there’s nothing range-entry about its equipment list. You get 19-inch alloy wheels,
Mid-range ‘Premium’ models (from £38,950) build on that spec with a different set of 19-inch alloys, adaptive headlights, a 10-inch head-up display, a gesture-controlled tailgate, real instead of fake leather seats, fancier ambient lighting, a booming Beats audio system and wireless smartphone charging. From £43,450, the range-topping Brabus variant features the same amount of technology as the Premium model, but it gets a sportier body kit, a unique set of alloy wheels and a few well-placed Brabus badges. The Smart #1 is good to drive at civilised speeds, is loaded with clever technology and built exceptionally well. There’s plenty of space inside, and tall adults will find loads of leg and headroom in the back. Plus, the ability to slide the rear bench forward to increase boot capacity means it’s never impractical. Performance for the single-motor versions is more than adequate, while the Brabus is silly bordering pointless. And while the #1’s range might not be the best in class, it’s more than enough for most commutes and day trips. I like that the ‘Smart Hashtag One’ is a bit different and I figure you might, too.

in the 20th century, showcasing tap's potential for expression and storytelling. Now, it is a dance enjoyed by millions globally.
Mastering tap takes time, but the enjoyment and health benefits are well worth the effort.
Tap Dancing: A New Year Ball Change So you're here because you can't bear the thought of another empty New Year resolution promise to yourself. After years of fad diets or exercise you don't enjoy, you're finally looking for something that will satisfy your 'new year new me' craving all year round. Introducing Tap Dance. Now, if Billy Elliot or Singin' In The Rain didn't already sell it to you, then tap dancing is a vibrant form of dance characterised by the rhythmic tapping of shoes against a hard surface. 'Aren't I too old to start tap dancing?' you ask yourself. Never! Boasting a rich history and many benefits for enthusiasts, this dance style is perfect for all ages, from young superstar wannabes to adults just beginning their tap journey. The history of tap dancing is a tapestry of cultural interaction and innovation. Its roots can be traced back to the mid-1800s in the United States, where it emerged from a fusion of European clog dancing and African rhythmic and drumming traditions. Tap gained prominence in minstrel shows, later moving to vaudeville stages and eventually to Broadway, becoming an integral part of American theatrical performance. Famous tap dancers like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers helped popularise the dance form
Engaging in tap dance is not just an artistic pursuit but also a highly beneficial physical activity. It's a fantastic cardiovascular exercise that enhances fitness, as the constant movement and tapping increase heart rate, improving heart health and endurance. The dance form also develops coordination, balance, and agility, as it requires a combination of footwork, body motions, and rhythm. Moreover, tap dancing is a cognitive exercise; learning complex patterns and sequences stimulates neural pathways, aiding memory, and cognitive agility. It's also a powerful mood lifter, helping reduce stress and anxiety through its energetic routines and the joy of self-expression. Starting tap dance as an adult might seem daunting, but it's an incredibly rewarding endeavour. The first step is finding a dance studio or community education program that offers beginner classes for adults, so we've shared a list of local adult beginner classes below. It's important that the environment feels supportive, encouraging, and tailored to adult education. In classes, new learners should expect to start with basic steps and rhythms, gradually progressing to more complex sequences as they become more comfortable.
Practising at home or setting your own stage such as a train platform or checkout queue can supplement studio sessions, with many online resources available to aid independent learning. The key to progress is patience and perseverance; mastering tap takes time, but the enjoyment and health benefits it provides are well worth the effort. Embracing tap dancing opens up a world of historical richness, cultural understanding, physical health, and personal enjoyment. For adults, it presents a chance to engage in a new form of exercise and an opportunity to be part of a continuing legacy of dance and cultural fusion. FASHION FOR A SUSTAINABLE WARDROBE
ave the Children Petersfield Branch had a busy 2023, kicking off with The Big Sale and finishing with our festive Christmas Jumper Day. Now, we are looking forward to raising even more funds to support children across the world in 2024! Sustainability is about maintaining or supporting a process over time, and The Big Sale is a fantastic example of this, having started in the 1960s. It has certainly grown but still has recycling at its core with a range of quality pre-loved clothing, homewares and decorative objects. For over a century, Save the Children has been speaking out on the biggest issues facing children.
Sustainability is about maintaining or supporting a process over time, and The Big Sale is a fantastic example of this. The work never stops, so we, and branches like us across the UK, never stop trying to raise vital funds to ensure every child gets the chance of the future they deserve, one that is full of possibility. Save the Children labours tirelessly in over 100 countries, not just when and where conflict, violence and climate disasters strike and not just in the short-term, but sustainably, striving to keep children safe, healthy and learning. Education is key and gives children the tools to shape their future. Here in the UK, the soaring cost of living pushes more families beyond their financial limits. Save the Children has projects in place working with more than 2,400 families from Newcastle to Sheffield and Manchester to
Margate, providing early learning resources and professionals to assist with education, as well as supermarket vouchers so that children will not have to go hungry. Every child deserves the best start in life.
THE BIG SALE 2024 The Big Sale is on Monday 4th, 5th & 6th March. See posters, press and Petersfield website for details: www.petersfield-savethechildren.co.uk

In recent years, British back gardens have transcended their traditional role to become versatile spaces enjoyed all year round. With the growing appreciation for outdoor living and increased time spent at home, people are discovering the joys and benefits of transforming their gardens into inviting, multi-functional retreats.
Of course, the weather, known for its unpredictability, has inspired creative solutions on how we can enjoy this space all year round. Fire pits and patio heaters have become popular, extending the garden’s appeal into cooler months. Covered areas, be it a pergola with a retractable roof or a garden room, provide shelter from both summer sun and autumn
“A vegetable patch not only brings fresh produce to your table but also adds a delightful charm to your outdoor space.”
drizzles, making the garden a perfect hangout spot regardless of the season. Health and wellness have undoubtedly played a huge part in the desire to create our own outdoor sanctuaries in recent years. Whether we’re encouraging nature to visit, promoting plant health to purify the air or doing daily dips into plunge pools to reap the benefits, there are many ways our gardens can benefit our mental and physical wellbeing. If you’re looking for some garden-spiration, here are three predicted trends for 2024 that will achieve that backyard bliss we all crave…
“There are many ways our gardens can benefit our mental wellbeing.” Vegetable Patch
A vegetable patch not only brings fresh produce to your table but also adds a delightful charm to your outdoor space. The encouragement to step outside and see how the produce is growing is beneficial to our minds and souls, as it allows us to digitally detox for a few moments whilst getting your body moving - not to mention the money-saving aspects. Classic British vegetables like carrots, peas, and potatoes are excellent starters when embarking on your vegetable patch journey, as well as herbs such as rosemary and thyme that will add that freshly grown aroma and flavour to your cooking.
A plunge pool serves as a focal point for relaxation. Last year saw a wave of people discovering the benefits of cold water swimming, but a plunge pool has become the sought-after solution for those with fresh water not in close proximity. Whether opting for a stand-alone or built-in plunge pool, opt for a naturalistic wood or tile design to blend with the countryside setting.
Garden rooms offer superb aesthetic pleasure and exclusive thermal comfort, a perfect backyard addition that can be enjoyed all year round. With the majority of landscapers now offering a complete design-to-build service, building your own garden room allows you to create a serene retreat for hosting guests or a hobby space when you need some me time.
“Fire pits and patio heaters have become popular, extending the garden’s appeal into cooler months.” The back garden has evolved into a year-round sanctuary for relaxation, entertainment, and connection with nature. By thoughtfully designing and equipping your space with your local landscaper, you can turn your garden into a tranquil retreat that beckons you outside, whatever the weather. DAMP JANUARY: A Balanced Approach to New Year’s Resolutions By now, many of us are well into our New Year resolutions. One popular resolution we all know and love (hate) is ‘Dry January,’ where we, as individuals, abstain from alcohol for the entire month. However, there’s a catch, as this month happens to also be the longest, most depressing out of the year. In recent years, resolutioners have scoped out a more flexible and potentially more sustainable approach to the year’s start, otherwise known as ‘Damp January’, and we’re here to share our thoughts on why it might be the best approach for you…
WHAT IS DAMP JANUARY? ‘Damp January’ offers a middle ground between complete abstinence and unrestricted drinking. It involves consciously reducing alcohol intake rather than eliminating it entirely. This approach advocates for moderation and mindful drinking, focusing on reducing the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption rather than a strict ban. After all, there are five tough weeks and social commitments to get through this month, including your mother-inlaw’s birthday.
DRY VS DAMP: THE BENEFITS
Realistic and Sustainable Change One of the primary advantages of Damp January is its realistic approach. Completely cutting out alcohol can be a significant challenge for many (us included), especially those who enjoy social drinking or a wine with a home-cooked meal. Damp January offers a more attainable goal that can lead to long-term changes in drinking habits.
Forming Healthier Relationships Mental Health Considerations By not completely forbidding alcohol, Damp January encourages individuals to develop a healthier relationship with drinking. It fosters an environment where one learns to enjoy alcohol in moderation, understanding its effects on the body and mind - teaching us that not every weekend must incur a hangover. This mindful approach can lead to more responsible drinking habits throughout the year.
Due to the post-holiday blues, shorter daylight hours, and colder weather, January is often considered the most depressing month of the year. For many, a complete ban on alcohol can add to this gloom. Damp January allows individuals to enjoy the occasional drink, which can be a source of relaxation and pleasure, thus potentially aiding in better mental health during this tough month.
Avoiding Societal Pressure
January is filled with social events and gatherings where drinking is often expected despite the lack of enthusiasm (our thoughts really do go out to the January babies). Dry January can sometimes lead to social isolation or pressure to justify personal choices. Damp January, however, allows individuals to partake in social activities without the stress of entirely avoiding alcohol, making it easier to stick to their resolution.
Easing into Healthier Habits For some, the drastic change of Dry January can be overwhelming and lead to a rebound effect in February. Damp January’s gradual approach is less intimidating and can gently ease individuals into healthier habits. This method can particularly benefit those who find sudden changes challenging to maintain.
Damp January is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It allows individuals to set personal goals regarding their alcohol consumption. Whether limiting drinks to weekends, reducing the number of drinks per occasion, or opting for lower-alcohol options, it offers flexibility to tailor resolutions to personal lifestyles and preferences. To conclude, Damp January presents a balanced alternative to Dry January, offering a less daunting and more sustainable approach to reducing alcohol consumption. Promoting moderation and mindful drinking helps individuals form a healthier relationship with alcohol, respects individual preferences, and acknowledges the social and mental health aspects of drinking. This approach can lead to more lasting changes in drinking habits, making it an attractive option for those looking to start the New Year positively.
