DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT; DO SOMETHING USEFUL etersfield has one of Save the Children’s longest established branches in the UK, and one of its most forward thinking. Their mantra is “Do something different; do something useful” and this has been borne out by their wide range of fundraising activities.

P

Then a global pandemic struck and The Big Sale, their highest earning, longest running and most well-known fundraiser of the year had to be cancelled followed by all the other planned events. But children’s needs did not get cancelled. Children’s learning is often one of the first casualties in a crisis, as Covid-19 has cruelly demonstrated. However, Save the Children has long understood that empowering parents to get involved in their own children’s learning and development plays a major role and boosts their chances of success. Save the Children’s Families Connect programme provides a series of activities, games and techniques families can use with their 4-6 year olds to support their numeracy, language, literacy and social and emotional development. Last September, Petersfield’s Save the Children Committee were determined to do something to raise much needed funds and, together with the support of Nicholson’s Auction House in Fernhurst, an online auction ensued. Local Save the Children supporters donated 125 lots of quality china and glass, jewellery, gold, military medals, and a collection of antique gloves. The sale raised over £4,000 – a magnificent sum. With social distancing and caution still necessary, another online auction is being held on May 29th, once again in collaboration with Nicholson’s, and it is sure to provide much needed funds for children around the world in poverty, hardship and hunger because of war, devastating weather events and disease.

Child protection underpins everything the charity does in 117 countries across the world, and Save the Children is probably best known for the work it carries out to provide children with nutrition and medicine in war torn and cyclone devastated areas. Back in December, local children were the focus of Festive Fun on Petersfield’s Heath, where brave teddies whizzed down a zipline and a socially distanced twinkly trail led to a glimpse of Santa and Mrs Christmas with their industrious elves. Save the Children is a charity for all children in need both here in the UK and in the wider world. In 2020, 10,000 of Britain’s poorest children were helped with early“Child protection underpins learning packs, food vouchers and other everything the charity does in essentials. Across 117 countries across the world” the world thousands of households were provided with access to clean water and soap and 2.9 million children were helped to access distance learning during this global pandemic. Children everywhere should have the right to safety and to have fun, adequate nutrition, the right to education and to play, and the right to blossom into happy, socially responsible adults because children are the future.

Gut health has always been important in science, but for the average person it has only just recently entered the mainstream health and beauty market as a hot topic of discussion. The science behind it is incredibly complex, but Beautiful South’s Lily Lloyd is here to make the concept more user-friendly and offer advice on how to improve your gut health. According to experts, there are around 40 trillion bacteria types in our bodies, with most found in our intestines. Collectively, they are known as gut microbiota (or microbes), and they are greatly important for our health and wellbeing as they produce our different hormones and vitamins.

There are plenty of products that claim to help improve gut health, but experts often advise that the best way to do this is through a few simple natural steps…

Gut health and our immune system also go handin-hand, because the majority of cells that make up our immune system are found in our digestive tract. So, to put it plainly, having a happy gut means fewer sick days and a lower risk of allergies and autoimmune conditions! A lot of us already invest a big chunk of time into clean eating but it must also be noted that gut health is also important to consider here, as even if we fuel of bodies with the healthiest of foods, if we don’t have a healthy intestinal lining to digest it, we won’t get all the benefits of what we’re eating.

1.

Prebiotics and Probiotics: To boost the beneficial bacteria (otherwise known as probiotics) in the gut, some people choose to take probiotic supplements which can be found in most drug stores. Some fermented foods are a natural source of probiotics and are therefore good for the gut for example, kimchi, kombucha and fermented vegetables.

Obvious signs of an unhealthy gut include bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or stomach cramps. However, even if you don’t have any symptoms, that does not necessarily mean your gut is working in tip-top condition. Gut health isn’t a quick fix; to make sure your gut is healthy and happy, there are simple changes that you can make to your everyday life and overtime (months and years) you will start to see the benefits for your whole body.

e n k s a M eauty enthusiast Sophie Paravicini shares her skincare secrets, tips and tricks for looking after our skin during a Pandemic. What is mask-ne? Its acne brought on by wearing a mask and it is something almost impossible to avoid so we might as well face it head-on. So why is this a thing and how do we tackle it? Unfortunately, yet it is the sole purpose of wearing a mask, little airflow is accessible to our skin whilst wearing a mask, so it creates a warm, moist environment which is ideal for bacteria to do its thing. Masks rub our skin, causing friction and irritation, which combined with all the trapped sweat and oils... Hello mask-ne. Before I recommend my current ‘mask-ne fighting’ skincare favourites, I have to stress, wear a clean mask. Don’t reuse a disposable one for more than one day in a row – just don’t do it and cotton masks are the best! We want to be cleansing every morning and night, it is the first and most crucial part of any skincare routine. For my evening cleanser, I am loving The Inkey List - Oat Cleansing Balm. It’s fragrance-free and oat is known for being super gentle which is perfect for calming down irritated skin. It will leave your skin makeup-free, hydrated,

your redness reduced and it’s great for budging any pesky blackheads. It also only costs the same as a few coffees? Winner. Apply it to a slightly damp face, massage and remove with a clean hot cloth. Next up, CeraVe - Renewing SA Cleanser should be your go-to second cleanse for the evening or it’s great as your reviving morning cleanser.

“A HEAVENLY COCKTAIL OF VITAMINS, OMEGAS AND BOTANICAL OILS TO HYDRATE, SOOTHE AND REPLENISH OUR INFLAMED SKIN” Ever since I have started double cleansing in the evening, I have seen a dramatic difference in the clarity of my skin. The SA Cleanser helps to alleviate bumpy skin with the help of salicylic acid gently exfoliating but without compromising our skin barrier. It’s also developed by dermatologists which is great. This is your treatment cleanser, not your makeup remover! After cleansing, we need to hydrate and treat our skin. I am talking about Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial, her best-selling product that is famously loved by celebs worldwide. Sold yet? It’s a heavenly night time cocktail of vitamins, omegas and botanical oils to hydrate, soothe and replenish

our inflamed skin that is just crying out for the hug of Overnight Facial. It’s your facial at home musthave that will leave you looking red carpet ready. Finally, before you close your eyes for bed grab your Skin Purifier from Clinisoothe+. This antibacterial spray is the last thing you want on your face at night-time but you can also spritz it as your final step within your morning routine. It protects the skin from pollutants and impurities, prevents future breakouts and promotes rapid recovery. In my head, I picture it nibbling away at any nasty bacteria before it can settle into my skin. Follow @sophiesuggests for more!

OLD SCHOOL SUMMER SNEAKERS Trainers, sneakers or creps – whatever you refer to them as, the fashion statements on your feet should show off your style and personality. Looking back at fashion in the good ol’ days can be embarrassingly nostalgic. Many brands offering vintage trainers have left their styles untouched for years and rightly so, as they are making a huge comeback in Men’s trends. In recent years, the global love for trainers has boomed and today, good quality trainers from big brands are often kept as collectables and can be

Even if you debut them on your UK stay-cation, you still deserve to treat yourself to a pair of fresh kicks to wear to the local pub garden. With so many new styles and designs released each week, it can be an exhausting chore to find your perfect pair of trainers. Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you by selecting the season’s sexiest sneaks…

STREET TO BOARDROOM – THE RISE OF THE SNEAKER According to a study by Harvard Business School, casually dressed people tend to appear more confident – an outlook that’s made its way into the Men’s Fashion World. Trainers have quickly gone from sport-based activities to a pretty standard choice of footwear for most occasions. In terms of business attire, what started with casual Fridays soon evolved into trainers becoming an acceptable footwear for office duties. So for when you do venture back into the office or attend a

soirée and you’re thinking about how to rock your new kicks, here’s a few rules to stick by: • Keep them clean and in optimum condition. • For summer, invest in some boat socks (visible socks are a no go!) • Go for neutral shades like white, black, brown or navy. • Pair with an ideal trouser length which ends just above the ankle. • Keep it simple, you want to bend the rules, not blatantly violate them.

Bathrooms Despite being one of the smaller rooms, Bathrooms have quickly become a focal point in the home; a place of relaxation, tranquillity and cleanliness. Bathrooms are the first place you visit when you wake up and one of the last before you sleep, so they deserve to be treated with the same love that other prized rooms inside your home receive, to set you in a good mood for the day ahead or relax your mind before bed.

Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles, A well-designed bathroom is a thing of beauty and can also boost the value of your home. From lighting to flooring, features to accessories, colour, texture and of course, the tubs, basins, sinks and showers – there’s a lot of elements to consider.

Design The Natural Outdoors - Incorporating natural woods, potted plants and eco-materials helps create a relaxing feel by bringing outside world indoors. Injecting Colour - Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles, bringing it all together with gold features; if you’ve ever visited the famous ‘Sketch’ in London then you’ll be able to gather inspiration from its modern quirky 18thcentury designs. Warm blues or pinks show off your personality and create an inviting place to get ready each morning. Details in the Dark - Dark colours are making a strong comeback in the interior design world. Perhaps one of the trendiest things of this season, dark features are no longer boring or intimidating, instead they can wonderfully contrast against feature colours and tiling.

You don’t need to install a brand-new bathroom to achieve your #bathroomgoals. Decor You don’t need to install a brand-new bathroom to achieve your #bathroomgoals. Stripping your current bathroom back to its canvas and adding new features and accessories can take your bathroom to meh to mwah! To create a calm ‘sanctuary’ feel on a budget, use warm earthy tones throughout your bathroom accessories to contrast against bold black accents for handles and hangers, that will help deliver a mixed soft industrial appeal.

Details With so many products for haircare, beauty and hygiene, our bathrooms can often feel cluttered. Try utilising your storage space and reducing the amount of products you have on display. Only leave the products out that are appealing to the eye and help tie-in with the true sanctuary feel to provide a welcome antidote.

NICOLE SMALL

I love the variety; every show has a different style, period and actors.

F

rom Pirates of the Caribbean to Aladdin, Phantom of the Opera and Netflix’s newest series Bridgerton; Hollywood, West End, Broadway, Ballet and opera have blessed us with some phenomenal costumes, but who is the face behind the creations? Beautiful South’s Lily Lloyd speaks to local Costume Cutter and Maker, Nicole Small, about her 39 years of incredibly hard work in the industry. It often shocks people to think that some of the world’s most celebrated costumes are made by one super-woman inside her home-workshop in Petersfield, Hampshire. Now aged 61, Nicole has been working for over 39 years and specialises in period costumes.

N

icole began her three-year Costume training in Liverpool in 1979, before beginning her career at Cosprop in London, one of the world’s leading costumiers. Nicole then made the decision to go freelance working as a supervisor, designer, cutter/ maker and teacher. Nicole spent the first 10 years of her career in London, moving to Los Angeles for 13 years and returning to Petersfield in 2004 with her two (now adult) children, where she continues to work from her home workshop. “Before my children arrived I would often work on location all over the USA and other countries, but I now do the fittings at the film studios (Pinewood, Shepperton and Warner Bros in Leavesden) or in London and sometimes Europe for Theatre ”. Nicole describes her passion “I love the variety; every show has a different style, period and actors.

Every show has a different style, period and actors. My job is to help tell the story and help the actor become that character. My job is to help tell the story for the audience and help the actor become that character”. Her craft is intricate, time-consuming and labour intensive “making a costume requires measurements and a 2D design, (drawing, reference, painting etc) and creating that image into a 3D costume to fit that actor by cutting the patterns, constructing, fitting and finishing to the satisfaction of the Designer, Director etc”. Nicole explains “the actors or performers may just be standing in conversation or they may jump on a horse, dance or fight, so I need to make that costume work and look good for whatever is required. Period costumes can be restrictive but including stretch fabrics can help the actor move more freely”. Film and Theatre have different considerations “in Theatre a costume is generally viewed from a distance, so the decoration needs to be more

obvious, whereas, in Film, the camera can be extremely close-up so every detail will be seen. Both require multiples of the same outfit. I am currently making Anna in ‘Frozen’, which comes to the West End soon, and there are three of each costume (one actor and two understudies) . In Film, we may make the same costume 10-15 times, if the actor is getting wet or used in any way that would damage it. There are also stunt doubles in Film, who may wear harnesses and padding so we work with the special effects team and make the costume to accommodate these”. Nicole explains that each principle (speaking) pirate in all Pirates of the Caribbean films had at least seven of everything because of the conditions and scenes they filmed. Nicole often works with the same teams who dye age and distress costumes. Nicole notes “It can be heart breaking to see my perfectly made costumes ripped and torn to shreds, they may even use cheese graters on the elbows”!

It can be heart breaking to see my costumes ripped to shreds, they even use cheese graters on the elbows! She tells us that the average time it takes her to make a period costume is 40 hours and with changing schedules in film she can sometimes be working until 2 am! “Theatre production is fast but less likely to change. I get the actors details at beginning of rehearsals when I measure them, then I have 4 -8 weeks to finish it, with one or two fittings. Film on the other hand starts way ahead of filming, sometimes we have to make samples to show the Director before we go into actual production and we’re still making costumes during shooting. I worked on Batman & Robin for over a year”.

The deeply humble Nicole shares some of the incredible work she has completed over the years, including costumes for Daphne on Netflix’s Birdgerton, Michael Ball in Hairspray, most of Tim Burton’s films including Dumbo, Sweeney Todd, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the 2016 Alice Through the Looking Glass where she made her favourite costume to date for Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. She has made costumes for some of the world’s most famous actors including Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Naomie Harris and Kaya Scodelario in all five Pirates of the Caribbean films, Nicole Kidman in Far and Away, Kristen Stuart in Snow White and the Huntsman and Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Isabella Rossellini in the 90’s black comedy Death Becomes Her, and for both Fantastic Beasts and The Little Mermaid which is still filming. In the West End her work includes Phantom of The Opera, Shrek, Spamalot, Aladdin, Dirty Dancing, Mary Poppins, Evita, Twelfth Night for the National Theatre and Romeo and Juliet for The Globe.

Locally, Nicole is in her sixth year as Costume Designer for Petersfield Shakespeare Festival, a job which she loves. “We are a very happy, hardworking theatre company.” PSF will be making a spectacular return to open air theatre this year with ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ from July 20th - 25th in the exciting new setting of Wylds Farm in Liss. Many households have been stuck at home, with the main chef of the family frantically trying to come up with new meal ideas, and with this option they are now spoilt for choice. Laura Whitaker-Jones from Chawton, near Alton is a big fan of Hello Fresh after she and her husband Rob had tried various other competitors. “We select from forty different weekly food options and get one delivery each week, containing four different meals for two for our Monday to Thursday meals. Best of all it saves me a lot of time, hassle, shopping and food waste, and gives me easy quick recipes that are delicious.”

he meal kit recipe box business has become one of the country’s most unexpected consumer success stories of the year. Market leaders Hello Fresh, Gousto and Mindful Chef are all jostling for position, with Hello Fresh seeing its customers double in 2020. Names like Waitrose and Nestle have also been keen to acquire major stakes in this relatively new business model.

Joe Wicks, TV presenter known as The Body Coach, is supporting Guosto and it is good to see that all of the recipe box providers are mainly focused on healthy and nutritious meals, with many of them seeking out fresh local produce and using local distribution centres. the Day Away Picture it now; relaxing in your garden, soaking up the sun’s rays whilst sipping a chilled glass of Rosé…bliss. Paler and lighter than a red but still full of aroma, rosé is perfect tipple for the Summer months. This crisp glass of heaven has surged in popularity over recent years thanks to its light citrussy tasting notes and its all-dayand-night drinking capabilities. As we scan the shelves, a pale rosé has become the go-to for many in Britain, however it is worth mentioning here that you should not shy away from the darker full-bodied styles, which also contain plenty of vibrant flavours. Although we would love an excuse to try them all, Beautiful South’s Lily Lloyd has selected the three best bottles to admire this season… Disclaimer: Beautiful South encourages our readers to always drink responsibly.

Miraval Rosé 2019 Côtes de Provence

Whispering Angel 2020

Wimbledon Pink 2020

With its pink pastel colour, the Miraval Rosé is a fresh, vibrant, elegant wine with notes of peach, wild raspberries and hints of florals. Fun fact; The Perrin family, of Château de Beaucastel fame, coowns the estate and manages the winemaking with celebrities Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who were married in the Château’s Chapel in August 2014.

Of course, we couldn’t have a Rosé feature and not include Whispering Angel. Produced in the cellars of Château d’Esclans, Whispering Angel is a benchmark of classic Côtes de Provence rosé. Made from Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle (Vermentino), its delicate and silky texture is adored by wine-lovers around the world and can be paired with a broad range of cuisines.

Besides the beautiful bottle, this subtle blend expresses both complexity and freshness of Pinot Noir grapes that are lovingly hand-picked in late October from a specially selected plot in the sunniest corner of the Wimbledon Vineyard. The next vintage will be available in Spring/Summer 2021 at www.wimbledonbrewery.com

Available to buy at Majestic Wines, Marks Available to buy at Waitrose, Sainsburys, & Spencer, Tesco and most stockists. Hennings Wine and most stockists. Starting at £17.00. Starting at £16.00.

Available to buy at www.wimbledonbrewery.com Starting at £17.50.

What’s clear is that this endlessly delicious, exceptionally versatile and aesthetically ‘Instagram-able’ wine signifies summer and sunshine and shall rightfully be enjoyed through many a bottle over the coming months.

Charred Vegetable Salsa, Roast Tomatoes and Halloumi Ingredients serves 4–6 You will need bbq or grill pan

This can make a beautiful dish on its own served with the lovely crusty gluten-free French Bread recipe also in the book, or else as part of a spread of food – the colours just sing of summer. I have also prepared it indoors on a grill pan for those wonderful English summer rainy days. Don’t be scared to really char the veg.

Once everything is blackened remove from the heat and cut the pepper in half lengthways. Using a spoon, remove the pith and seeds. For a milder sauce, remove the pith and seeds from the chilli too. If you like it spicy, just cut off the top green stem.

Method

Place the pepper, onion, chilli and basil with two garlic cloves from the bulb into a food processor with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and blitz (just one quick blitz is sufficient). Alternatively, finely dice them.

If using heritage tomatoes, cut the bigger ones into quarters and leave the cherry ones whole. Barbecue or use a grill pan to roast the tomatoes, garlic, pepper, onion and chilli until they are blackened and charred. Leave the garlic whole; this recipe only needs a couple of cloves but the roasted garlic can be used in many other dishes and kept wrapped in tin foil in the fridge once cooled. My tip I learnt this technique when I was in Mexico with MasterChef working with Enrique Olvera at Pujol. It’s one of the top restaurants in the world, so you listen when he shows you how to do something. If I can take just a little of his magic and put it into my dishes, it makes me so very happy.

150g heritage tomatoes (you can use red if you prefer) 1 garlic bulb 1 large red pepper, whole 1 red onion, cut into rings about 1.5cm thick, kept un-separated 1 long red chilli 15g basil, stalks included, small leaves picked off and saved 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 x 225g pack hallouwmi cheese squeeze of lemon (optional) sea salt (optional)

Chop the halloumi into chunks and fry off in a frying pan with the remaining oil until golden and crispy. To serve, put the charred vegetable salsa on a plate. Place the halloumi on top and spoon over the roasted tomatoes. Sprinkle with the baby basil leaves. I don’t add salt to this dish as I think the halloumi is salty enough and I wanted the vegetables to have a purity of flavour. However, please feel free to add salt and a spritz of lemon if you feel it needs it.

Exquisite garden ornaments & show-stoppers in

Sculpture at Beaulieu The stunning grounds and gardens of the Montagu family home of Palace House at Beaulieu will be transformed with more than 250 sculptures by over 50 internationally and nationally acclaimed sculptors this summer. A trail will lead throughout the atmospheric backdrops of Beaulieu Abbey Cloister, the Wilderness Garden, Victorian Flower Garden and throughout the rooms of Palace House with Sculpture at Beaulieu from June 19th to August 30th. Building on the success of its inaugural year in 2019, the showcase will range from exquisite garden ornaments to show-stoppers such as Rachael Long’s powerful, life-sized rhinoceros made from salvaged industrial metalwork. Also celebrating the variety of the animal kingdom are a life-sized bull, horse and bull terrier created in bronze by the late Brian Taylor.

“There will be an eclectic mix of work to be seen, from figurative sculptures and abstract pieces to key signature pieces.” The wildlife theme continues with a soaring peregrine falcon, leaping cheetah, leopard’s and horse’s heads by Lymington sculptor Michael Turner, whose Gorilla sculpture was bought by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay for Bread Street Kitchen, one of his signature restaurants in London. Closer to home, Michael’s handmade poppies lead followers on an annual trail around the New Forest in aid of the Royal British Legion. Based just a stone’s throw away from Beaulieu, another local sculptor is Gary Boulton, whose eyecatching kinetic and contemporary sculptures are inspired by nature yet beautifully crafted from metal. Equally eye-catching are David Watkinson’s amazing kinetic sculptures, inspired by sycamore and dandelion seeds, which move in the breeze. On a smaller scale, delightful sculptures of wild birds, including owls, ravens, kestrels and kingfishers, are the creations of Paul Harvey, whose work can also be found in the Royal family’s own

collection. While Royal College of Art alumnus Paul Vanstone’s powerful stone figures have been exhibited at some of the world’s leading galleries. Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors Rebecca Newnham will return to Beaulieu with her work for the second time. Appearing for the first time is the wonderfully intricate work of Shaun Gagg, who makes a statement from everyday items with his painstakingly welded coins, nails and keys. With a line-up of more than 40 sculptors new to Beaulieu alongside returning artists, Sculpture at Beaulieu curators David Waghorne and Kate McGovern have chosen sculptors for their diversity of materials and styles. David said: “With every piece carefully selected to complement its setting, there will be an eclectic mix of work to be seen, from figurative sculptures and abstract pieces to key signature pieces.” A socially-distanced, Covid-secure trail will guide visitors from piece to piece. If a particular sculpture captures your heart, the works range in price from £85 to £100,000. A catalogue of all of the exhibition sculptures can be purchased on arrival at Beaulieu’s Visitor Reception. For more details, see www.beaulieu.co.uk/events/sculpture-at-beaulieu. Sculpture at Beaulieu is included in an admission ticket to Beaulieu, which also includes entry to the National Motor Museum, Little Beaulieu, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House, the Secret Army exhibition and Beaulieu Abbey.

CELEBRATING AWESOME YEARS

I

t was with great pleasure that Petersfield Youth Theatre welcomed 124 young people to their Easter Project – Come Sing and Dance.

This was their first theatre experience in seven months, and everyone involved was ecstatic to be back. Five marquees were erected on the Bedales Sports pitch, and the young people spent four days working on theatre based workshops. Professional Theatre Workshop Leaders were dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz to greet the participants when they arrived on the first morning - and dance, drama, musical theatre and puppet making workshops followed.

THEATRE WORKSHOP LEADERS DRESSED AS CHARACTERS FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ TO GREET THE PARTICIPANTS WHEN THEY ARRIVED As well as adult chaperones and volunteers, older PYT members volunteered to assist, happy to ‘give something back’. It was an exciting and rewarding experience for everyone! PYT would like to thank our friend and Corporate Patron Michel Focard de Fontefiguieres Photography for taking the photographs, The Petersfield Town Council for their financial help, and Bedales School for allowing us to use their facilities. 2020 was the Youth Theatre’s thirtieth birthday, and though they were not able to produce their much loved shows due to the pandemic; Thirty Awesome Years, a film featuring current members and alumni was streamed to and enjoyed by thousands.

Future events in 2021 include weekly workshops during the summer and autumn terms and a Summer School in August. There will be two productions, Disney’s The Little Mermaid in September and Elf – The Musical at Christmas. More details of the productions and ticket information will be on their website nearer the time. For more information about PYT and how to become a member, visit our website pyt.org.uk

THIRTY AWESOME YEARS A FILM, WAS STREAMED TO AND ENJOYED BY THOUSANDS

Smell the roses.. and the coffee! Flowers and coffee? Absolutely! A new concept launched by Hampshire locals Anna Tonkin and Julie Marjoram in the coastal village of Emsworth. A successful pond-side florist shop doubles up as a cafe opening the doors to customers to enjoy both their flowers and delicious coffee, tea and cakes at the same time. “Flowers and coffee go together really well! With the early starts as a florist, coffee has always been important” jokes Anna, founder of Blooms and Wishes.

Blooms and Wishes is a lockdown fledgeling business, started from a back room based on an idea Anna had 6 years prior. Anna left a directorship at a marketing agency in the middle of lockdown and this left the path clear to pursue the dream. “I’ve spent my entire career telling people how to market their businesses and then I had to do it myself! It’s completely different” says Anna. Based on fresh, seasonal flowers delivered as a ‘posy in a jar’ (one of their top-selling items to this day) or as a hand-hand-tied bouquet, Blooms and Wishes was launched. Anna wanted the business to be entirely plastic-free - an eco-mission that now forms part of the business’s core values.

We really want everything we do to be of the highest quality. The marketing worked! As orders grew, professional florist friend, Julie joined the venture. The pair had the right skills to grow the business. “You have to do a bit of everything when you run a small business; sales, marketing, finance, operations, cleaner!” explains Anna.

One of the most successful aspects of Blooms and Wishes has been their Friday Flower Club, a subscription service with flowers delivered weekly, bi-weekly or monthly on Fridays to the local area. ‘We’ve got so many lovely subscribers and we really enjoying delivering them something different each week” says Anna. “We’ve invested in our coffee offering too - it’s really high quality and we’ve got a great coffee machine. We really want everything we do to be of the highest quality, whether that’s flowers or coffee or the cakes we source from local bakers” explains Anna. There’s much more to come too it seems. The team hope to be selling flowers nationally from May using what they will only describe as a ‘unique concept’. “We’re so excited for the future, it’s been a roller-coaster 9 months and we’ve loved it all. If you get a chance to go for your dream, do it! You won’t regret it!’

The Flower Shed, as it is affectionately known, offers plenty of outdoor seating and lovely views over a pond. “We’ve especially enjoyed welcoming our lovely Brides and Grooms here this week to talk about their planned weddings” said Julie.

You can find Blooms & Wishes at The Flower Shed, located behind The Jingles Hotel at 77 Horndean Road, Emsworth, PO10 7PU. Delivery is currently available at a 10 miles radius from Emsworth. Order online or give them a call on 01243 218278 to order your delivery! www.bloomsandwishes.co.uk

PLANT PARENTHOOD:

Popular Indoor Plants If you haven’t already, then the green finger trend is one that we recommend getting behind (and obsess over). A family of indoor plants brings a pop of colour to your living space, creates a fresh style and helps purify the air you breathe. Indoor plants offer benefits for our mental and physical well-being. They are said to improve our mood, reduce stress and increase productivity. Just how we open our windows to let the crisp air in, indoor plants help remove the nasty bits of indoor air pollution and create a refreshing aroma that contributes to good health.

As for a design element, plants effortlessly soften, add texture and build dimension. Plants should be considered carefully, just like you would a piece of art; choose pots varying in sizes and colours to create a more relaxed feel or go with matching pots to display a chic uniform effect. Here are this year’s popular plants to add a little life to your home:

Aloe Vera: Probably one of the best-known house plants, the Aloe Vera is a plant and first-aid kit all in one. Its gel insides are grown all over the world and luckily for us, it’s incredibly simple to take care of. Likes lots of light, not too much water and to be treated with fertiliser in summer months. Available at www.patchplants.com

Chinese Money Plant Also known as Pilea Peperomioides, the muchloved Chinese Money Plant is a super easy, eyecatching decedent of the stinging nettle family. Take cuttings and plant all over the house and if become rich overnight, then you’ll have this little guy to thank! Likes to be in bright indirect sunlight, a frequent dusting, less frequent watering but regular sprays. Available at www.beardsanddaisies.co.uk

Calathea ‘White Star’ The Calathea ‘White Star’ is a perfect large decorative plant that absorbs pollutants and turns them into oxygen. You’ll be able to admire the red bases of the leaves as they curl up for bedtime after a long hard day at work. Likes high humidity, regular water sprays and partial shade. Available at en-gb.bakker.com

Never forget a plant again: It can be a little overwhelming looking after lots of plant children but luckily for us, there are now a handful of apps available for our devices to help us stay on the right path to our plant parenthood. Simply upload an image of your plant for the app to identify, monitor its watering and light exposure and it will send you reminders for when it is due to be fed.

Castles

IN THE SKY

W

hen William the Conquerer landed on our shores in 1066, his own dreams, hopes and plans for how he would change our beautiful British Isles, may have seemed impossible and unrealistic. One of the many strategic ways the Normans succeeded in changing our landscape, our history and our defences was by building 500 castles, with many of them still standing today. One of the most famous castles in the world is without doubt Windsor Castle, which has been the home of royalty for almost 1000 years. As an official residence of Queen Elizabeth II, it is one of her most favoured homes and where she chooses to spend her private weekends, Easter and during Royal Ascot. Queen Victoria also felt very much at home at Windsor, spending most of her year there. To this day the castle is still very much a working royal palace, supported by a huge team of staff, with many living within the Castle, all helping with the upkeep, preservation and traditions including

the changing of the guard, a colourful spectacle that takes place in the Castle’s Precincts. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, the castle has well over a million visitors each year. Many parts of the Castle are open to the public, including the precincts, the State Apartments, Queen Mary's famous dolls' house, St George's Chapel, and the Albert Memorial Chapel. It is with thanks to huge teams of conservationists, who worked so hard to save both the fabric of the building and the contents after a devastating fire in 1992, that visitors can still experience the depth of history of one of the most magnificent castles in the world. Set high above the River Thames, the castle is surrounded by the town of Windsor, with its many other attractions and access to beautiful riverside walks and river cruises. Visitors can also follow the Long Walk that leads down from the castle into Windsor Great Park. Windsor is just over an hour from our ‘Beautiful South’ catchment area and provides visitors the opportunity to experience living history.

A little closer to home just a short jump over the West Sussex border you will find an equally, if very different, castle at Arundel. As with all castles it is set on very high ground and overlooks a beautiful river - the River Arun. With over 1000 years of history this great castle is set in magnificent grounds. It is within these extensive grounds that visitors can enjoy some of the most beautiful gardens in the country and the spectacle of their annual Tulip Festival. Arundel Castle has many areas open to the public including State Rooms, Bedrooms, the Fitzalan Chapel, Inner Gatehouse and Barbican and the Keep. Most of the castle and its extensive grounds are open to the public. Rich in history the castle has descended directly from 1138 to the present day. Today the castle remains the principal seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, the dukedom currently being held by the 18th Duke, the Earl Marshal of England. we are the Peppermint People We grow, harvest and distil our signature Black Mitcham peppermint on our farm in Hampshire - and have been doing so for over 25 years. Its refined, distinctive taste inspires our wonderfully refreshing range of chocolates, teas and treats. As a family the Colmans have always been drawn to robust, piercing flavours. For years it was mustard, but 25 years ago we turned our tastes to mint. Back in 1995, Sir Michael Colman and his farm manager Ian set their sights on America to track down Black Mitcham peppermint – a notoriously tricky herb to grow and one which had, 100 years before, been native to England.

we now grow over

100 acres

of English peppermint,

transforming it into the world’s purest peppermint oil

Struck by the overwhelmingly intense, nostalgic flavour of this peppermint, Ian and Sir Michael decided to take a few cuttings back home, and have a go at cultivating them. After a lot of research, advice and a good bit of patience, they started by planting a plot the size of a tennis court. And, over time, those peppermint plants slowly started to establish themselves in the soil at Summerdown. Skip forward a few decades to today and we now grow over 100 acres of English peppermint, transforming it into the world’s purest peppermint oil, which we use in everything we make. We also sell this oil directly to our favourite makers so that they can use it in their collections too. We’ve become ‘The Peppermint People’.

Fifteen years ago, we launched our chocolate and teas range to great acclaim and have won twenty eight Great Taste Awards to date. We pair our cool Black Mitcham peppermint with ethically sourced, rich, velvety chocolate – could there be a more luxurious partnership? We don’t think so. Our multi award winning body, bath and home range was introduced 7 years ago and also features our star ingredient. Refreshing and invigorating, the signature mint and lemongrass fragrance of this natural range not only smells divine but awakens your senses, restoring and reviving mind and body alike. From bath soak to body lotion, candles to diffusers, the collection really is sunshine in a bottle. Hailed as nature’s best refresher, peppermint boosts mental alertness, lifts mood and brings clarity and focus. To eat, drink and experience the taste of our pure, English peppermint yourself, visit our online shop at www.summerdown.com and follow us on Instagram and @SummerdownUK

Audi RS4 Performance estates will always fire our imagination in a manner few other vehicle types can. When we think of them, it’s difficult to prevent the Audi RS4 and RS6 siblings from gate crashing our frontal lobes. Just four days into 2021, an RS4 Avant in top Vorsprung trim arrived on my drive. During its seventh and final day under my stewardship, I took it out for a final blast across the South Downs National Park before the bad man came to take it away. As I waited for the blood to return to my fingers and my eyeballs to rehome, I mentally construed a few notes…

Crushingly fast, effortlessly discreet, and

The RS4 Avant recently received a series of updates for its current model year. It acquired no new sheet metal, but the bumpers received a spot of Botox resulting in front air intakes big enough to swallow oncoming traffic while the exhaust pipe finishers are the diameter of Johannesburg storm drains. The wheel arches are 30 mm wider at the front and rear compared to the regular A4 Avant. New twilight-design rear lights and air vents next to the oversized tailpipes are also evident.

The interior received some updates to the infotainment system, while Audi removed some weight and tweaked the engine and transmission to produce better economy and emissions figures. The RS4 comes with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit as standard, replacing traditional analogue dials with a 12.3in screen. Its graphics are bespoke with extra RS-specific displays available such as boost pressure, tyre pressures, power and torque output, and a G-force meter…mmm, like you’ve got time to look at that while cornering with enthusiasm. With row two in place, the 495-litre boot is one of the biggest in its class. Fold the 3-piece rear seats and there’s a useful 1,495 litres of flat load space. The RS4 estate is offered in three trims; ‘Avant’ (£65,025), ‘Carbon Black’ (£71,425) and ‘Vorsprung’ as tested here (£83,170). Being the top of the A4 estate range, all three RS4 Avant models carry significantly deep toy chests. The current Audi RS4 Avant offers a superefficient and omnipotent 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, paired with an eight-speed auto cogbox. The Porsche-sourced motor divides its 444bhp power and 600Nm of torque between both axles, with a 60/40 bias towards the rear under normal conditions.

When you eventually ‘fire up the quattro’, there are few clues to its sleeper status. Only when you stomp on the accelerator is the RS4’s potential revealed. There’s a little hesitation as the turbochargers spool up, but it can cover cross-country routes with an incredibly indecent pace. The car’s quattro system grabs the tarmac and spits you out of corners, but don’t expect to playfully unstick the rear wheels though as the RS4 is more about security than showboating. If you are so deep of pocket not to have to worry unduly about trifling matters like fuel bills, then the Audi RS4 Avant is the consummate all-rounder. It’s crushingly fast, effortlessly discreet, beautifully finished and genuinely practical.

The sculpture trail will take visitors through this award winning garden, which nestles in a fold of the Surrey Hills and features rare and unusual trees. They will discover a dynamic range of sculpture as they walk through the garden, past Stag Glade, The Pond and into the magnificent azalea garden. In 1927 the garden was first opened for the National Gardens Scheme, and remains one of the few original gardens which are still open. Sir Harry Waechter laid the foundations for the present garden, adjacent to Ramster Hall, now the private home of the owners.

Ramster Garden to host Surrey Sculpture Society exhibition this Spring

S

urrey’s much loved Ramster Garden in Chiddingfold near Godalming, famed for its incredible display of rhododendrons and azaleas, is hosting a special exhibition by the Surrey Sculpture Society within its grounds from 23rd April until 20th May 2021. The sculpture trail will offer visitors a rare chance to see 98 inspirational original sculptures, created by professional and emerging artists, within a magical woodland setting. The sculptures will be staged on a circular route around the 20-acre garden, adding further drama to the breath-taking show of over 300 rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias which burst into colour throughout spring.

“The sculpture exhibition will add an exciting new element to the garden, which is already home to enchanting sculptures and natural carvings which can be discovered as you follow the winding grass paths. It is a perfect setting to balance sculpture with plantings,” enthuses Rosie Glaister, who runs the family owned Ramster Garden. SSS Exhibition Manager Alison Catchlove commented: “The Society is thrilled to be exhibiting at Ramster Garden. It’s so exciting to have a new venue where we can create a completely fresh sculpture trail. The grounds at Ramster are beautiful and we have a fantastic range of sculptures, that are going to look amazing there.”

The sculpture trail has been designed by SSS member Carol Orwin, working closely with the Ramster Garden team, to create an exhibition that will show a diverse range of sculptures. They will be strategically positioned throughout the gardens, ranging from modern abstract to more classical styles, using fired earth, metal, glass, stone, wood and bronze — with each piece accompanied by the artist’s statement.

It’s so exciting to have a new venue where we can create a completely fresh sculpture trail. The wide range of sculptures which would form eye-catching focal points in gardens, conservatories and interiors, will be for sale during the event. Ramster Garden will be open daily 10am until 5pm throughout spring (free car parking). Visitors can also enjoy delicious cakes, sandwiches, snacks and drinks from the Tea House. Seasonal garden membership is available.

Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles,

A well-designed bathroom is a thing of beauty and can also boost the value of your home. From lighting to flooring, features to accessories, colour, texture and of course, the tubs, basins, sinks and showers – there’s a lot of elements to consider.
