With spring just around the corner, colour will be back in our lives once more. Celebrate the new season with an injection of pastels and sorbet shades into your wardrobe. From lilacs and mints to buttercup yellows and bubblegum pinks, soft hues are a classic spring staple, and timeless enough to be re-worn year after year. The most important rule of pastel shades is not to overdo with their sweet and dainty manner, so try to avoid ruffles and embellishments. Wearing pastel clothing is all about clean line garments and strong shapes, so choose streamlined items with simple cuts and structure to capture the look. Searching for some style inspiration? Beautiful South Magazine has selected our top pastel picks for this season, to make your life that little bit easier.

style insider The secret to keeping your outfits exciting is by playing around with accessories. For some, accessorising comes easily, and for others, it can be difficult to know where to start.

DAINTY GOLD NECKLACE A gold necklace is timeless and can be worn forever, no matter your age. Gold is an investment, and a special item you can treasure forever. Beautiful South Magazine loves the look of layering necklaces, mixing and matching different types of chains and lengths.

HOOPS From shining silver to matte finishes, and little and large shapes, there really are so many hoop options to choose from. But, where to start if this is a new style for you? Mini hoops are a delightful accessory to complement your outfit and can work for both casual daytime activities and evening events. If you are feeling a little daring, experiment with hoop sizes and go for something a little larger.

STACKABLE RINGS Stacking rings is a trend that keeps growing and growing, first making an impression on the fashion industry in 2013 across catwalk shows. It can bring great excitement and glamour to your outfit, and if you’ve fallen out of love with some of the rings in your jewellery box, stacking is the perfect way to see them in a new light. First of all, the thing to remember is that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do this. The more different the rings, the easier it is to stack them. Wear statement rings with dainty rings, mixing metals and mix stones. Engagement and wedding rings are not off-limit to stacking, don’t be afraid to try something creative.

STONES Gemstone jewels across necklaces, bracelets and rings are beautiful, versatile and should be a staple in your jewellery collection. Although gemstones can be eye-catching, they don’t always have to steal the spotlight. Sometimes just a touch of colour and sparkle can do the job. Whether it is adding a small pendant necklace to a simple workday look, wearing drop earrings to make your outfit a little more formal, or adorning your wrist with a gemstone bracelet, it will add a new touch of elegance to any outfit. We are lucky to be home to some delightful jewellers in the local area, including RL Austen in Chichester, RJ Morris based on Hayling Island and Annie Haak online (www.anniehaakdesigns.co.uk). All of which have a vast and beautiful selection of jewellery to choose from, including our staple suggestions. Be sure to make a journey to the delightful stores over the next few weeks and follow our jewellery guide for some inspiration. You won’t regret it!

There is no denying that in recent years the trend and conversation around fasting, or 'intermittent fasting' as it is known, is growing rapidly. You probably know someone who has engaged in some form of it or perhaps even given it a go yourself. But what are the benefits that back up the theory? And what’s the best way to do it yourself? Popularised by British writer, Michael Mosley, the 5:2 diet involves eating normally 5 days of the week while restricting calories to 500-600 for two days out of the week. On the fasting days, women are to eat around 500 calories while men eat 600 calories. For example, you might eat normally every day of the week except Mondays and Thursdays. For those two days, restrict your intake over 2 small meals. The Warrior Diet was created by fitness guru Ori Hofmekler, and is based around eating small amounts of raw fruits and vegetables during the day and eating one large meal at night. You fast at day, and feast in the night within a 4 hour window. This approach advocates that food choices that are quite similar to a paleo diet — whole, unprocessed foods that resemble what they looked like in nature. Fasting, when undertaken correctly as part of a balanced routine and overall healthy lifestyle, has many beneficial and scientifically proven positive attributes. From weight loss, through to a reduction in insulin and blood sugar, through to inflammation, increase of hormone and growth of new nerve cells. There have even been claims of increased lifespan... The basic explanation of intermittent fasting is through shifting your eating patterns between periods of consuming and fasting. You are still able to eat an average amount of food but just in a smaller time frame, which is called your 'eating window.' On the right are our top 3 round-ups for ways you can give it a go.

Basically, you "fast" all day and "feast" at night within a 4-hour eating window. Eat-Stop-Eat involves a 24-hour fast, either once or twice per week. This method was popularized by fitness expert Brad Pilon. By fasting from dinner one day to dinner the next day, this amounts to a full 24-hour fast. For example, if you finish dinner at 7pm Monday and don't eat until dinner at 7pm the next day, you've just done a full 24-hour fast. You can also fast from breakfast to breakfast or lunch to lunch. The end result is the same. Water, coffee, and other non-caloric beverages are allowed during the fast, but no solid foods are permitted. Remember, always consult your health care professional before embarking on any new dietary ventures.

Talking Organic We increasingly spend so much time thinking about our diets. We are, apparently, what we eat. There are also many theories around our skin and its power of absorption. Can the products we apply – cosmetics, fragrances, lotions or soaps really penetrate the dermis and circulate within our bodies? Generally, the theory is 'not really'. It's not easy for ingredients to penetrate through the skin because of it's highly complex and defensive structure, and primarily, these are myths. However – there are small and specific changes, based on the size of molecules in ingredients, where our skin can indeed pick up and absorb certain products. With this in mind and in the broader context of looking after the planet and being conscious consumers, it is still a worthwhile exercise to find out more about where your products come from, how they are sourced, their chemical make-up, and what affects this could have on our bodies. Just like vegetables or fresh produce, Organic Beauty is the formulation of cosmetic products using organically farmed ingredients. These ingredients are grown without the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GM), herbicides, synthetic fertilisers and more. eaceful simplicity surrounds the modest designs of Japanese culture. keeping it minimalist. The Japanese are famous for being smart with their space, and their clean designs are heavily influenced by their history and beliefs of simple, happy living. A great way to bring the Japanese ethos into your home and find more inner peace is by getting rid of things that don’t bring joy, for example: clearing surfaces, emptying drawers and creating space by stripping back your unneeded items. We highly recommend the wonderful Japanese author, Marie Kondo’s book ‘The life-changing magic of tidying up - the Japanese art of decluttering and organising’, to guide you thoroughly through your new journey.

Colour code To create your zen space, choose the colour palette of your interiors wisely. Japanese homes avoid bold hues and instead opt for calming, neutral colours. From sand and pale grey to ivory and mocha, be sure to keep your colour code basic and authentically calm. KEEPING THE FAITH Faith & Football is a Portsmouth based charity which was started and is run by ex-Portsmouth footballer Mick Mellows. Here he tells me about his life and work within the charity. Mick was born in Woking, where he attended Sutton Grammar School for Boys and played firstly for Sutton United before going to train as a teacher at King Alfred College, Winchester. During this time he played and scored (although losing 2-1) the 1969 FA Amateur Cup Final and made 16 international appearances for the England national amateur football team. While playing for the college, he came to the notice of many league scouts[ and eventually signed for Reading, for whom he played 17 games, before signing for Portsmouth prior to 73-74 season. He was to remain a regular for the next five years and won the clubs coveted “Player of the Year” trophy in 1975.

They provided the charity with an opportunity to connect and build relationships with the local communities to help meet the needs of the city. The leagues are for children 7 - 11 years old. There is no coaching involved, just a friendly and encouraging environment to allow children of all abilities to play together, have fun, make friends and keep fit! Other initiatives include Family Engagement Programs, Christian Supporters Club (PFC), Enterprise & Leadership Challenge, and work in Uganda, where a Bi-Annual football tournament has been hosted to bring together local Ugandan people with Sudanese refugees arriving in the region.

One of the longest-running schemes is the “Extra Time Reading Course”, which has now been in operation for more than ten years. Are wood-burning stoves bad for air quality? In recent months there has been much talk about wood-burning stoves and air quality. Many of the headlines have been based on studies that don’t necessarily give the whole picture, and modern wood-burning stoves have been lumped together in the same category as open fires and much older solid fuel appliances.

Ecodesign Ready stoves reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire To combat, SIA (Stove Industry Alliance) Ecodesign Ready stoves are a new breed of stoves that are actually part of the solution to air quality offering exceptional efficiencies and very low particle and CO emissions. Ecodesign is a new Europeanwide programme to help lower emissions and improve air quality across the UK and Europe. All products manufactured and

installed after 1st January 2022 will have to comply to Ecodesign regulations. Ecodesign stoves have to meet a set of clean-burning criteria. The efficiency must be over 75%, and emissions must be below certain levels using ultra clean-burning technology that ensures an excellent burn while reducing smoke and emissions whilst burning a lot less wood. As well as helping to reduce household emissions, wood-burning stoves also provide a carbon-neutral, sustainable heat source. In fact, recent SIA tests have shown that Ecodesign Ready stoves reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire and 80-84% compared to an old stove. They are a cost-effective and fuel-efficient option for households across the country, and in particular, they help to provide a source of heating for people in rural communities who live off the gas grid. In the government’s energy efficiency indicator logs have a significantly lower carbon factor than gas, oil or electricity.

Modern wood-burning stoves are virtually carbon neutral when using current burn technology. High-quality wood emits less CO2 when burned than it does with natural decay, so with correctly installed stoves producing emissions of only 0.008 kg CO2 per kWh - compared to 0.198kg for gas, and 0.517kg for electricity - wood provides an attractive and environmentally responsible alternative to gas and electricity for heating the home. TFS Wood Stoves offer one of the largest ranges of Ecodesign ready stoves on the market that not only meet the criteria but are a vast improvement on the regulation by up to 45%. If you would like some help and advice on choosing a wood stove for your home, please call TFS Wood Stoves on 01730 890200. With Polo Season in the UK officially kicking off in May through Summer, now is the perfect time to review your wardrobe and update your style.

Here we give you the ultimate recap on what to be seen in this season. Giddy up.

The biggest determining factor in shoe choice at the Polo is probably the weather. For wet and muddy terrain, go for a Chelsea Boot.

This suit is the ideal centrepiece of the outfit for the ultimate daytime chic. Saman Amel favours a natural palette, believing careful fabric selection will add the right amount of texture and depth. explore a whole range of subjects, often those that are about the environment. Even during the winter months in dry weather, the children were out there writing poetry about what they see and experience around them in the woodland fringes of the green, the far distant views and the wildlife. It was a joy to see how engaged and excited the children were as they discussed and composed their poems.

is renowned children’s author Michael Morpurgo, who with his wife Clare, founded Farms for City Children. This is a charity offering urban children a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week on a real farm in a ‘learning through doing’ experience of a different life, for children who may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world.

There is now a growing movement towards taking the classroom outside, and this has been promoted by the global Outdoor Classroom Day campaign, with three million children

The environment is a key issue at the moment, and the desire and need to get children outside and connecting with nature is being fulfilled in many imaginative ways, even in the centre of huge overpopulated cities, including in London with its Vauxhall City Farm, not that far from Waterloo station. The farm is run as a charity focusing on education, youth work, animal care and horticulture.

recent survey has revealed that children spend less time outside per week than a prison inmate, with 74% of children spending less than 60 minutes out in the fresh air each day, which is recommended to prisoners as essential to mental and physical health. The temptations of modern technology and our addiction to it have not helped. On the BBC’s ‘Easy Ways to Live Well’ programme, a typical modern family were interviewed about their screen time, with the mother monitored as spending up to six hours a day on her phone and her children far more daily screen time when TV viewing was also added. One of the startling statistics to come out of this programme was that those who have too much daily screen time are 26% less productive. The good news is that educators are now getting the children into the fresh air, with a relatively new movement to take the classroom outside. The writer of this article often sees groups of school children and teachers using her local village green as a classroom. The campaign promotes that: ‘outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. It can also teach critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity and is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood’. The annual campaign states that time outdoors every day is import to every child. pring is all about revitalising, refreshments and new starts - the ideal time to consider revamping your home. After a long, cold winter, a spring renovation project is a great way to breathe new life into your living environment. There are plenty of ways to update your home without the messy overhaul or vast expense of remodelling. Whether you are only looking to do small changes, or for a whole new project, Beautiful South Magazine can share some inspiration on where to start. Once completed, these touches go a long way to improving your living space.

Small touches There are plenty of renovation projects you can do if either you're working with a more modest budget or do not have the desire for a major revamp. If so, it is time to explore with a new palette of paints. Whether you gloss your walls, kitchen cupboards or even front door, adding new pops of colour to your home can make it feel like an entirely new space. Why not be bold, and opt for hues outside your comfort zone? It's spring, after all, so the ideal time to adorn your walls in minty green or tangerine, or perhaps your front door in a vibrant blue. Other small touches you can update your home with can include: updating a kitchen backsplash with new tiles, replacing doorknobs, light switches and handles or even styling your walls with artwork and prints. The possibilities are endless.

Lighting Lighting is an essential aspect of interior design, as it enhances the aesthetic appeal and creates the ambience of a living space. Lighting fixtures that illuminate a room create a safe and comfortable environment alongside adding style to the interior

dĂŠcor. Ensure your 'light spectrum' from your bulbs is appropriate for each room. Soft bulbs emitting yellow and red undertones are more suitable for lounges and bedrooms, whereas brighter bulbs emitting blue undertones work better for the bathroom or study. To enhance the lighting of an area, hang mirrors from your walls to create a lighting illusion.

Reupholstering furniture Rather than bidding farewell to your sofa or dining chairs, you can reupholster your furniture to immediately update your home. By adding new fabric to an existing armchair or sofa can create a chic modern style that will look as good as new. Easier additions, such as new throws or cushion covers, also help give old furniture a fresh feel.

The essentials While it isn't the most glamorous or exciting, upgrading your living environment's electrical and plumbing mechanisms can improve the safety and efficiency of a home and be the base of starting your house projects. There's little sense in updating a whole new bathroom on a crooked floor or have your new room damaged by a leaking foundation or roof. Being smart with the essentials is key!

Getting outside It's important not to forget about your outdoor spaces so dress them the same as you would inside, to create flow and continuity. While winter weather can expose exteriors to harsh conditions, these couple of months bring a much better working environment. And if you're thinking about these exterior projects, starting in the spring allows damaged grass, shrubs and gardens to recover and regrow once complete. Just as the interiors should be carefully planned and rearranged, so too should the outdoor entertaining area.

Covering costs Renovating a house from fresh can bring about a set of issues that will need to be resolved before your dream home can emerge — and these issues tend to involve hidden costs. Being aware of these and having a step-by-step plan of action should mean the project remains on schedule and budget. Plan your expenses and let the fun begin!

Adding new pops of colour to your home can make it feel like an entirely new space.

The art of the Spritz You would have seen them sweeping bars, beach clubs and restaurants across the south, across the UK… probably across the world. The Spritz. Specifically, the Aperol Spritz. Aperol Spritz is one of Italy’s most famous exports. An easy 3-2-1 mix of three parts

The Pimms Spritz Originally sold as a medicinal drink in 1823, Pimms was intended as a way to improve digestion by Mr James Pimm himself.

But did you know, there is a whole world of Spritz beyond simply Aperol? Yes indeed… and here we have it. Our top 3 picks for the best alternative Spritz recipes that will guarantee equal surprise and delight over the Spring months and beyond!

The Ginger Spritz

Add the below ingredients in a long glass over ice, garnish generously and enjoy. 100 ml Pimm’s Number 1 200 ml lemonade 1 large sprig of mint 2 slices of cucumber 1 slice orange cut in half 1 slice lemon cut in half

prosecco, two parts Aperol, and one splash of soda water. Pour all the ingredients into a wine glass filled with ice, garnish it with an orange slice, and you’re ready to go.

The perfect serve for a hot spring day, when you need a refreshing drink with a kick. Prepare the following...

The Campari Spritz Keep it close to the Aperol - but with a distinct difference. Campari spritz is your answer. Dry sparkling rosé and lemon soda bounce off the citrusy flavour of Campari.

1 thin slice of peeled ginger 2 oz Lillet 3 oz Cava Splash of ginger beer

Place ginger around the inside of your glass to maximise flavour. Fill with ice, and add Lillet and cava. Top off with ginger beer and stir gently to combine. Delicious.

2 oz Campari 3 oz dry sparkling Rosé Splash of lemon soda

Pour Campari and rosé into a high glass - or, even a wine glass. Top off with soda, stir gently to combine, and add the lemon to garnish. Squeeze en route - and sit back.

Not satisfied and need more cocktail inspiration? Mixel is a brilliant bartender app with over 1,700 recipes that you can customise and choose based on every occasion.

Give it a go!

Loving Hayling Island… Tucked between Portsmouth and Emsworth, Hayling Island is a place which boasts greenery and nature, local produce and a true sense of community; all surrounded by fresh harbour waters and awardwinning beaches. Hayling’s coastline consists of a three-mile stretch of unspoilt beaches, as well as more miles across the shore of the Harbours. Known for its swimmers and water sports enthusiasts, the island’s blue flag beach is the perfect place to take a dip or practice your windsurfing. The deep high tide is an excellent location for the more competent swimmers, whilst the low tide exposes a vast area of sand for families and dogs to enjoy. You will soon realise that horse riding is a popular pastime

for residents and visitors of the island, with owners and their four-legged beauties galloping across the shallow waters into the summer sunsets - creating a true cinematic scene. The rainbow of beach huts between the Golf club, Funland Amusement Park and the Seaside Railway make this beach an idyllic place to stroll (or ride) along. Many walkers often pop into the local café for a well-deserved icecream or make a mid-way pit stop for fresh fish and chips at the Inn on the Beach pub.

The famous coastal Hayling Billy Cycle Trail, which was originally used as a railway line to the island and Havant, is a five-mile off-road round trip used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. This trail passes through Langstone Harbour, which is recognised internationally for its impressive nature conservation due to its haven for bird life and aquatic wildlife; including harbour seals! Image above: Hayling Billy Trail

The harbour is home to charter fishing boats and commercial fishermen and is also an excellent location for recreational activities such as water skiing, canoeing, motor cruising and more. After a day of exploring, the locals and visitors of the island venture to Langstone’s The Ship Inn. Sitting alongside the edges of the harbour, this pub serves locally sourced dishes including freshly caught fish, which can be enjoyed alongside the great company and stunning views of the harbour’s freshwater. Inland you’ll find the much loved Northney Farm. Located in Northney Village with views of Chichester Harbour, the Northney Tea Rooms are open every day between 10 am – 5 pm, serving delicious home-made sandwiches, icecreams and light lunches. The farm dates back to the 1930s, before dividing into two sister farms in the 70s . Northney farm is one of the islands most enjoyed attractions, boasting a herd of 120 Ayrshire cows, fresh produce and its admired heritage. Image below: Stoke Fruit Farm Sunflowers by Andrew J Hulson

Guests are welcome to walk along the fields footpaths and spot the wildlife that too enjoys the farmland; including pheasant, foxes, deer and woodpeckers. The Northney Farm crop rotation is an important part of farming for its sister farm, Stoke Fruit Farm, which also uses some of Northney’s fields to grow wheat, potatoes and peas.

Images above: Northney Farm

Stoke Fruit Farm shop is a family-run business located on the main road of the island. It sells delicious local produce including eggs which are freshly laid each morning from some of their 3,000 free-range chickens.

The shop’s Milk re-fill station is most definitely a highlight. Pricing at £1.99 for a glass bottle of milk or 99p for a milk re-fill, the milk station dispenses locally sourced pasteurised whole and semi-skimmed milk, promoting the brilliant efforts to re-use glass containers, instead of purchasing plastic milk bottles from supermarkets. The farm is also home to the extremely popular sunflower fields. Owner Sam Wilson first sowed the sunflowers seven years ago and now runs the annual pick-your-own sunflowers extravaganza with the help of his wife Annabel, his sister Nette, his stepchildren and the rest of the family.

It’s safe to say The golden radiation from the acres of sunflower fields, the beautiful beaches and the local produce are some of the main things that attract the thousands of people to the island each year... ...Deservingly

BASED ON THE DESIGN OF A SIXTIES LEGEND THAT FOUND FAME IN RALLYING, IT’S A SUCCESSFUL HOMAGE TO THE MUCH-LOVED ORIGINAL boot and a similar amount under the bonnet. Think of the Alpine as a fun weekend toy, and it’s unlikely to be an issue, but a TT, Cayman or even a Toyota GT86 can carry more if you plan on taking your sports car on holiday.

enault has revived the name of a classic French sports-car ibrand, and the stunning Alpine A110 is its first production model. The Alpine A110 is a mid-engined sports car that’s fast, fun, surprisingly cheap to run and probably the best French Porsche current money can buy. Based on the design of a sixties legend that found fame in rallying, it’s a successful homage to the much-loved original. It’s far quicker than its predecessor, too, and adds extra choice for driving enthusiasts who, these days, have a relatively narrow selection of cars from which to choose.Compact and lightweight, the A110’s closest rival was the nolonger-available Alfa Romeo 4C, but being built out of aluminium instead of carbon-fibre, the Alpine is less extreme and easier to live with day-to-day. Now that the 4C isn’t offered new, the Audi TT, Toyota Supra and Porsche Cayman are arguably its nearest competitors. However, the Alpine is still a very different proposition from both these cars. Power comes from a throaty 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 249hp. It’s the same engine found in the Renault Megane RS, but here it only has one

tonne of car to get moving. This means 0-62mph is dispatched in just 4.5 seconds, which puts it on a par with its rivals. Yet, despite its performance, whooshes and rasps, the A110 can still return economy of up to 46.3mpg, bringing surprisingly agreeable running costs. RenaultSport engineers have more experience with front-wheel-drive hot hatchbacks, but that hasn’t held the Alpine A110 back. Light, communicative and accurate steering makes threading it along a twisting road a sheer delight. A low centre of gravity and mid-engined balance mean it can flick from one direction to the other in an instant. It also has a pliant ride, making it more comfortable than the Porsche or Audi. Its interior is spacious enough for a tall driver and passenger, with supportive and comfortable seats and decent visibility. The dashboard layout is simple, with an infotainment display hovering in front of the fascia and a simple row of toggle switches under it. The centre console is a thin spine with push buttons for the automatic gearbox and a prominent red starter button. It’s less brutally simplistic than the Alfa 4C, but can’t quite compete with the Porsche 718 Cayman or Audi TT for plushness or build quality. In most respects, though, the Alpine A110 is a surprisingly good all-rounder. door, and a beautiful body of work started to come together. My warm-hearted neighbour, Roessa Marks, offered her home as a venue, Amanda Wyatt of Sage & Season set up in the kitchen with homemade soup, and fresh focaccia arrived from Sarah Raisbeck. Over 100 wonderful people turned up from across the county, and I faced a wall of generous buyers for the best part of four hours. Pieces were sold from £1 to £400.

Australia In early January, I sat in the kitchen and said to my partner, ‘how bad does it have to get?’. How bad does it have to get before we really take notice of what is happening to our planet, to nature, to our home? For me, this was bad enough. I had reached a point where I wanted my voice to be heard. If I feel the horror and if I feel daunted by what is happening, I can’t be the only one. That question planted a seed, and very quickly, an idea began to develop.

I am a potter, working and living in the Meon Valley. I have a small presence on social media, but enough of an engaged audience I hoped would share my sentiment. My overriding thought was, I can’t sit here and do nothing, I want to help in the only way I know how. So on the 19th January, I planned a charity art sale, bringing together the work of local and national artists and makers, to raise funds for relief support and wildlife rescue in Australia. I first posted about the event on my Instagram account ten days before. From expecting just a small handful of artists wanting to take part and hoping there would be just enough space in my small studio to hold the sale, I am still shocked by what ended up happening. In those few short days, over thirty artists and makers reached out to me, asking to take part. Incredibly generous donations of work arrived at my

We raised an incredible £5,690.59. This has now been donated to Australian Red Cross, Wires Wildlife Rescue and Cobargo Wildlife Sanctuary. This amazing event has taught me some lasting lessons. The most important being that I can make a difference. We can all make a difference by sharing our thoughts and ideas and coming together. Each of us, individually, has a voice. And if you are in position for that voice to be heard for good, then use it. If you have something to say, someone else will be wanting to say it too. This is when change happens. These disasters continue, and they will spread. The fires in Australia, the floods in Indonesia, they won’t be the only shocking climate disasters we see in the years to come. This isn’t happening to someone else; it’s happening to us all. Make your voice heard.

An intensely herbaceous yet

delicately floral

Nestling at the western end of the South Downs Way, surrounded by the rolling Hampshire countryside, clear chalk streams and watercress beds for which the county is known, you will find Winchester Distillery, home of Twisted Nose Gin. Launched by Paul Bowler in 2014 from his kitchen in central Winchester, and now based a few miles outside the town in Old Alresford, Winchester Distillery is home to hand-crafted premium spirits using traditional methods and botanicals sourced from the surrounding landscape, such as watercress, lavender and coriander. A former software developer, Paul left behind his career and daily commute to London to pursue his love for gin and to become more involved in the local community. Despite living in Winchester for years, Paul felt like a visitor in his hometown and wanted that to change. Initially selling gin at Hampshire Farmers' Markets and through local pubs and restaurants meant that Paul got to know more and more locals who were also passionate about their food and drink. Those people are still loyal supporters, and many have become friends along the way.

The journey in creating what is now the distillery's signature gin, Twisted Nose, was not an easy one. In fact, it wasn't until recipe 84 that Paul was satisfied he had achieved what he had set out to make – an intensely herbaceous yet delicately floral spirit with soft sweet citrus notes and spicy undertones finishing with a peppery sparkle.

The name comes from the translation of the Latin name for watercress –

The ten botanicals, including juniper and locally grown watercress, are distilled slowly to maintain the freshness and delicate aromas, and the result is an intense, fragrant and refreshing gin. The name 'Twisted Nose' comes from the translation of the Latin name for watercress – nasturtium. It is thought that the spicy, peppery leaves were bestowed this moniker after the effect on one's nose after eating them! In November 2019 Twisted Nose was relaunched in a stunning bespoke bottle that ripples and refracts like the surface of a Hampshire chalk

stream, demonstrating its vibrant celebration of provenance and place, and raising interest in the premium spirit beyond the Hampshire border. Paul Bowler, owner of Winchester Distillery, comments: "Twisted Nose was the first gin I created, which launched back in 2014. With the growth of the business and successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year, it was the right time to reinvigorate Twisted Nose. The new design perfectly captures all the key elements of our delicious, flagship gin and will help us take it to a new level." Winchester Distillery successfully completed their first crowdfunding round last summer smashing their investment target by 122%. These funds will be used to extend their production of spirits beyond their current range of gins with an exciting move into rum, whisky, and other creative concoctions. atching the forests burning in Australia, covering an area roughly the size of England, has undoubtedly torn the world's hearts; acknowledged through the outpour of donations and praise to the firefighters and aid workers. But even as we count our blessings here in the UK, there is sadness in our hearts to say that our own forests are too currently suffering a devastating threat. Ash dieback disease (also known as Hymenocyphus Fraxineus) is moving frighteningly quickly through forests within the UK; including Stansted Park, situated on the Hampshire/West Sussex border, which now suffers from the infection causing many young trees to die.

This virulent disease weakens even larger trees, reducing their ability to fight infection and making them unstable. This has serious safety implications in areas of public access, or adjacent to roads and buildings. Managing them is fraught with danger, meaning landowners are, with heavy hearts, having to fell large numbers of ash trees. The Stansted Park Charitable Foundation is offering the chance to help forests closer to home, planting thousands of trees to recreate forest cover, offset emissions and create wildlife habitats.; but it needs your help.

The public can help support the Foundation by sponsoring a tree.

creatures reliant on it for food or habitat. Old trees, with numerous cavities, are homes for birds, insects, bats and a myriad of insects and fungi. The public can help support the Foundation by sponsoring a tree. Selling at £10 each, a tree within Stansted Forest can be bought as a present for family members or in memory of a loved one. Michael Prior said, 'We are incredibly fortunate that Stansted Park is wellloved – and are very grateful that so many people have already expressed support for this project. While it won't be possible to identify your individual tree, you will be able to specify which area and species you'd like and know that you have permanently committed to the restoration of the forest.'

The Stansted Park Foundation has reluctantly begun its own felling programme, under licence from the Forestry Commission. Head Forester, Michael Prior, said, 'This is a last resort, something we never wanted to do. 'Ash is one of our most common trees and its widespread loss will have a disastrous effect. The species is vital for biodiversity, with huge numbers of

The cost of replanting these large areas within the ground is huge, however this scheme a vital part of Stansted Park's charitable mission. A mix of native hardwoods will optimise biodiversity and the introduction of new species, able to thrive in our changing climate, will add seasonal colour. New access paths will also be laid to enhance visitors' experience.

Emsworth Arts Trail 2020

25-26 April and 2-3 May By Kate L’Amie

his year’s Emsworth Arts Trail is set to be just as varied and exciting as ever. With 99 Artists taking part in venues throughout the picturesque harbour town, it promises to be two weekends full of a diverse and interesting range of art. “The Emsworth Arts Trail has certainly put the town on the map as a destination for art,” said Carol Price, the event’s chairman. “Now in our 19th year, we have seen visitor numbers grow year on year and art lovers arriving from far and wide.” Last year’s event saw 99,000 individual visits recorded over the two weekends, an impressive increase since the trail began in 2001, with just a handful of artists exhibiting in their home studios.

is a creative and colourful journey around Emsworth; it really is a community-wide event.

Artist Focus:

With the majority of venues located within a mile of the town centre, visitors often make a family day out of it by walking or cycling along the trail. The printed trail guide can be picked up in shops around Emsworth or in the library and includes a map so you can plan your visit. With such a wide variety of work on show – painters, printmakers, photographers, textile artists, woodcarvers, ceramicists, jewellers and sculptors – there is something to interest everyone. The Arts Trail takes place on 25-26 April and 2-3 May 2020. To preview all the artists taking part, and plan your visit, see emsworthartstrail.org.uk.

Julie Turner is a contemporary printmaker, working mainly in monoprint and screenprint to capture the wild beauty of Chichester Harbour in her own distinctive style. She sells work in PO10 Interiors in Emsworth and also shares her love of printing by teaching workshops there. Sylvia Tomkinson is a “technique-led” jeweller, experimenting and perfecting new processes to create distinctive individual collections. Sylvia loves working with natural stones and forms, always creating jewellery that is both wearable and comfortable.

“We like to think of ourselves as a community of artists, with new exhibitors always welcome; this year we have a number of new artists joining us”, added Carol. “It means there is always something new to surprise and fascinate - from both the new and established participants.” The Trail includes many local businesses and community venues; Artists and makers exhibit their work in shops, halls, pubs, sailing clubs, home studios and pop up galleries. The result

Kate L’Amie is taking part in the trail for the second time this year. A stitch artist, she is inspired by the beautiful birds and scenes of Chichester Harbour. Her thread paintings are created (following trips out with the binoculars!) at home on her dining table, using free-motion embroidery.
