INSPIRING WOMEN TO GET BACK TO FITNESS The best way to inspire oneself to get back into fitness is to find an activity that you are likely to stick to – one which fits easily into your busy life and adds fun to your fitness regime. Exercise need not be a chore, with new crazes and fresh classes appearing regularly in gym class calendars, it is true to say that there really is something suited to everyone.

Dance Classes

Dance classes are a fantastic, fun way for women to get back to fitness, regardless of whether you wish to join a local gym class, start with a group of friends or engage solo. The rhythmic exercise appeals to so many women worldwide due to its promise to improve muscular strength, flexibility and cause weight loss, particularly when engaging in faster styles of dance including hip-hop and Zumba. And once the music is blasting, the dancing is contagious. It is true to say that Zumba fitness continues to be hot, hot, hot! This is because women of all levels of health and fitness can engage in the class, as choreography can be easily modified for lower impact when women face injury or modified for higher intensity with the incorporation of weights. The enjoyment of dancing around in a Salsa style to popular music makes Zumba a fun way to ease yourself back into exercise. To find local Zumba classes, visit and click ‘Find a Class’.

If you are looking for something a bit more elegant and less high impact, why not check out Fitique’s barre classes in Alresford? Rebecca, co-founder of Fitique told us “Our clients particularly love Barre - a low impact, addictive, full body workout. By waking up muscles you didn’t know you had, barre aims to strengthen, tone and create poise - bringing out your inner dancer. Designed to help enhance an effortlessly elegant posture”.

Cycling If you wish to make the most of the summer sun, cycling gives riders the perfect opportunity to exercise whilst watching the stunning local countryside pass you by. The beauty of cycling is the flexibility in which it is performed – as there are no time constrictions, cycling fits easily into everyone’s schedule. But what’s even better is once you have dusted off your bike and helmet, you can boost your fitness levels without causing any damage to your bank balance.

If looking for a lovely cycling route you can enjoy in the summer sun, why not check out the Hayling Billy Trail? hampshire/Trails/00-49/HAMPTR0041_ leaflet.pdf

Belly Dancing Whilst all women should push themselves to be healthier, it is important to be realistic as to your current level of fitness. For women who wish to jump back on the fitness bandwagon at a lower level of intensity, try Belly Dancing. The gentle rocking movements work with the natural physical inclinations of the female body, rather than against them as in some other forms of dance, allowing women to get fit and to unwind. Belly dancing also aids women in preparation of childbirth as dancers develop control over their abdominal muscles and flexibility in the pelvis. If searching for a belly dancing class near you, have a look here

y e s Rom

Situated in the beautiful surroundings of the New Forest and nearby Test Valley, the charming town of Romsey has been referred to as ‘the jewel in the crown of Hampshire’.

The lively market town has a remarkable past with it’s links to royalty and range of historical architecture in the town centre, including King John’s House and the Romsey Abbey – one of the best examples of Norman architecture in Europe.

Yet the modern day Romsey continues in its finest form, particularly in relation to its thriving food and drink culture. Today, the town is host to a truly diverse blend of dining, from authentic English pub grub to award-winning international cuisines, diners in Romsey are spoilt for choice as to what they should choose. Unsurprisingly, the historical market town is home to a range of charming venues from the Old World. At The Old House At Home, situated on Love Lane, you can enjoy a selection of real ales as you snuggle by the brick fireplace of the thatched pub, dating back to the 17th Century. For a hearty, wholesome English meal, tuck into a traditional Sunday lunch at The Cromwell Arms. The flavoursome Sirloin of Chalcroft Farm beef and the Romsey loin of pork are the finest cuts from local farms and are prepared with the freshest Hampshire produce when served with crispy potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, honey roasted carrots and sticky red cabbage.

The Three Tuns, in Middlebridge Street, puts a spin on the traditional pub setting as the historical Grade II listed building adopts a stylish interior with vintage chandeliers. The well-designed menu is bursting with long-loved English favourites and seasonal specials, offering visitors a memorable dining experience. Make sure to pair a fullbodied red from the carefully selected wine menu alongside the tantalising British cheese board, full

For an outdoor dining experience, spend your day in the summer sun on the charming courtyard of The White Horse Brassiere where diners are spoilt for choice from breakfast to dinner. The restaurant handpicks its produce to accentuate the home-grown tastes in its appetizing food, from the home-made selections of muesli, breads and purees in the breakfast menu, to the locally sourced New Forest eggs and sausages,

The award-winning Brassiere also offers the perfect opportunity to pause your busy day for a spot of afternoon tea. Enjoy the sweet and savoury delights of finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones with a range of teas and coffee, or treat yourself to a glass of Prosecco, or two, for a special occasion. But it is not only British cuisine that Romsey excels in. Take a trip to France at La Parisienne. Place yourself on the streets of Paris as the smells of freshly baked French baguettes fill the air from lunch service, alongside the scent of delicious hot bowls of Moules Marinière. Or if you’re looking for authentic cuisine from further afield, delve into the array of Indian and Bangladeshi, Catonese and Pekinese or Thai dining experiences on offer. It’s time to enjoy a truly British holiday as you escape to the countryside in an English cottage. There’s no need to go far. For a romantic local retreat for two in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, The Stables offers a refurbished farmhouse situated amongst the rolling hills of the Meon Valley. The cottage offers the perfect opportunity for local exploration and a staycation that will allow you to fall back in love with the area in which you live. Feel at home as you cosy around the wood burner and enjoy the true meaning of local produce, tucking in to free-range eggs and incredible bacon, produced on the very farm in which the cottage sits. Top photo: The Stables, bottom photo: Ridge House.

Test your fitness during a bike ride in the stunning natural surroundings of the South Downs National Park, take an easy afternoon stroll around the delightful village shops before popping in for a pint of local brew at the village pub just one mile away. And after all of that, soak up the sun and relax reading your favourite book in the gorgeous plant-filled garden.

Alternatively, Beck Cottage offers the perfect fairy tale property for larger groups. The rustic, thatched cottage is situated within the charismatic village of Woodgreen in the New Forest National Park. Although refurbished in 2014 to provide modern conveniences for guests, Beck Cottage certainly retains its periodic charm. Its six spacious bedrooms can facilitate a memorable getaway for groups of family and friends of up to twelve people. The New Forest is a place bursting with activity that is sure to keep all ages occupied. Watch as wild ponies roam the open forest or jump onto the saddle yourself at one of the local equestrian sites. Discover the beauty of close by destinations; including the National Trust’s grand country house Mottisfont. Delve into the insightful exhibitions inside the romantic house and stroll around the vibrant gardens that have existed since the 13th Century. Fishermen will not be disappointed by the locations on offer to reel in a catch, or two. Neither will motor fanatics, as the National Motor Museum of Beaulieu sits in the heart of the New Forest with a summer calendar packed full of famous motoring events for you to choose from.

For a trip further afield, the picturesque Cottage at Ridge House, located in the idyllic scenery of the Cotswolds, offers a holiday that is quintessentially English. With the 18th Century architectural gems of Bath on your doorstep, this is the place to stay if you wish to explore Britain’s rich history and heritage, or if you simply wish to relax, as the peaceful location is every holidaymaker’s hideaway paradise. Uncover this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as you walk England’s best-marked trail, the Cotswold Way, or watch the beauty pass you by from above as you float high in a hot air balloon. Jumping into the water for a dip isn’t something that needs to be reserved for poolside holidays in the South of France or indulgent weeks spent lazing on the sands of the Bahamas. Swimming as an exercise is an ideal way to get the body working hard in a manner that can also be relaxing and enjoyable. In summer, it’s the perfect time of year and excuse to whip out the trunks and get involved either at your local pool, beach, or lake - after work or on the weekends. Swimming is a serious contender when it comes to exercise, helping you lose weight and get fitter. With the right technique and regularity - perhaps 2 x 30 minute sessions each week - swimming will improve your cardiovascular fitness, and sculpt muscles over your body, which is typically hard to do at the gym, or with running or jogging. It is also a great option for those of us who may have physical limitations such as arthritis or are a bit overweight, due to gravitational factors. One of the best parts about swimming, is it’s something we can enjoy doing on our own, and also with friends or family. Pools or the beach are the perfect place to disconnect from the world and take time out to relax. In the south of England, we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. To find a local pool, or open water-swimming centre near you check out and make the most of the summer months.

The natural substance has proved to be successful when used for a number of beauty and health treatments, such as facemasks, digestive cleansing, and more recently – tooth whitening. Range Rover Evoque Convertible By Wayne Gorrett It may be difficult to comprehend, but a convertible was always part of the Evoque’s future. From the very first concept sketches, Land Rover was committed to bringing back some sort of open-top motoring. Company bosses hope that buyers choosing an Evoque will seriously consider picking the convertible.

Externally, the Evoque convertible looks very similar to its hard-top sibling. The roofline is virtually the same, giving the car that same hunched, tub-like silhouette. It’s on the inside that the changes are most noticeable – namely the removal of the middle rear seat, making this strictly a four-seater. Boot space has been quite heavily compromised by the roof mechanism, too.

The Evoque has become a huge commercial success and has Range Rover’s largest trophy cabinet holding more than 200 Given the size of the Evoque, chassis rigidity is respectable, though there’s a discernible amount of body international awards. The Range Rover Evoque convertible is an excellent car. Mechanically, it impresses through rigidity and off-road tenacity. Ginger Created with Passion Interview by Poppy Baker

inger has been created by our two passions - great food delivered by excellent service.” As soon as I began my conversation with Sally Elcoate, I realised how true this statement was. The passion behind the company is astounding, and has lead to them quickly gaining recognition for their unique and personal approach to catering.

Sally goes on to speak about her favourite thing about running the business, saying “I love being able to be as creative as I want to be. Getting to know all of our clients is also amazing... to get that spark from them. Finishing a job and hearing how much everyone loved our service is so rewarding.”

What truly sets the business apart from its competitors is the personal approach they take to planning and catering events. Clients are given the opportunity to “build their day from scratch, rather than having to conform to a specific menu or style of eating.” This really opens up a huge space for them in the market, as very few companies would have the patience, dedication, or creativity to work so closely with clients in order to create something absolutely perfect.

The company is clearly their passion, and it is inspiring to see two people working so hard towards what they have always wanted to do. Food connects people, sparks happy endorphins and simply makes people happy... it is wonderful to see two people harnessing these powers and bringing them to a wide audience.

In her spare time, Sally enjoys being outdoors. “I am an avid mountain biker, and so I try to get out in the forest as often as possible with wet Ginger Catering was launched in April last year by Sally Elcoate and winter trips to Wales in our off season to enjoy the mountain biking Matthew Harris, following a number of life changing events that led to scene there... Currently the modern industry of English wine production is thriving with a rising worldwide reputation, hundreds of new wine makers stepping onto the scene and over 5 million bottles of English wine being produced each year. Following the celebrations of the annual English Wine Week in June, we explore why everyone simply cannot get enough of our delicious English wines!

English winemaking is not easy. Producers face the struggle against unexpected rainfall, rising temperatures and high production costs, but all of these troubles seem to be made worthwhile as England now produces wines that are competitive in style and price to our European counterparts. English wines were exported to 27 countries in 2016 and experts have high hopes for the future as they predict higher and higher numbers of exports on the horizon.

Since the commercial revival in 1950s, dedicated English producers have built the reputation of our wines from the ground up. In fact, the local Hampshire town of Hambledon marked a turning point in British winegrowing history when it became home to the first commercial vineyard in 1951. Today, Hambledon Vineyard consists

becoming easier to enjoy quality English wines that are produced on our doorstep. For a fruity, summertime white produced in the heart of Hampshire, you can pick up a bottle of Row Ash 2013, produced at the Wickham Vineyard. ( Whilst England is now producing wines of many varieties, the popular bottle-fermented sparkling wines continue to dominate the market. This is evident through the top three grape varieties grown in England which include: Bacchus – a white grape of a sweet variety, Chardonnay – a

Sparkling is a popular choice for winemakers as areas in England significantly mirror the climate and chalky, clay soil of the Champagne region in France, allowing world class wines to be produced here at a fraction of the price. The family-owned RidgeView Wine Estate is a prime example of this, having won medal after medal internationally and due to the fact its quality wines have been chosen by the Queen to be served at a variety of state occasions, including the banquet dinners of Xi Jinping and Barack Obama. However perhaps the most notable investment in English sparkling wine to date is that of Champagne Taittigner, as in May this year Taittigner began planting its vineyard at Domaine Evremond in Kent. If you’re eager for a taste, hold your horses! Visitors will have to wait until 2023 for Taittigner’s first English sparkling wine to be produced. In the meantime, indulge in some of our English sparkling favourites created a little closer to home, try the Three Choirs Classic Cuvée ( A fine,

Focusing on wines from smaller growers, VIN Wine Merchants offers more than just wine, it offers a whole wine experience. With regular wine courses and wine experience days (which include lunch at FAT OLIVES and a guided tour of Hambledon Vineyard) you can discover more about the wines. Along with exceptional service and advice you will be sure of finding a wine at a price to suit your budget and know for sure it will be a wine you will enjoy. (

In 2016, after a long career in the wine trade, which included working for Harrods wines, Annabel’s Club and Wickham Vineyard, Jonathan Rogers decided it was time to work for himself and opened VIN Wine Merchants in Emsworth.

Local lavender fields

The local landmark, Lavender Fields, sits on Hartley Park Farm in the heart of the Hampshire countryside. It has been 15 years since Tim and Anne Butler introduced English lavender to the farm, but now the vibrant fields of delicate blue and deep purple cover the local surroundings. In more recent years, glorious wildflowers have also been planted, providing an even more varied and colourful landscape. Although 30 different varieties of lavender currently grow in their fields, Tim and Anne are keen to grow an even wider variety of lavender on their farm, creating a stunning environment filled with relaxing, aromatic scents. The Lavender Fields are a happy place for visitors of all ages, bees, butterflies and budding photographers. It is not only the benefit of a beautiful day out that attracts visitors to the Lavender Fields, but also the range of locally produced, delicately perfumed products on offer. All handmade products are created from essential English lavender and rosemary oils, grown in

the very Lavender Fields that the farm shop sits. Customers are able to connect with their purchases as they experience the environment in which the lavender flower is distilled, the oil is matured and where the product is bottled. Tim and Anne aim to bring customers to the Lavender Fields through the use of their products, wherever you may be! Dawn Lawrence A true artist of maritime splendour

Wyllie was undeniably one of the most distinguished maritime painters of all time, and still continues to be favored by art collectors to this day. Despite being inspired by such an iconic painter, Dawn has managed to forge her own path and creative style, which has gained her recognition among masses… and has even lead to

her being exhibited within the Wyllie Gallery. In 1997, Dawn’s career began in earnest when she was invited by an Admiral of the Royal Navy to embark in R.F.A ARGUS as the official artist to 702 Squadron. This allowed her artwork to take an impressive turn, because being a qualified pilot, she was able to fly with the Lynx helicopter crew, therefore viewing marine scenes from the air. She believes this gave her the ability to create unusual perspectives in her paintings, and has helped her to become the successful artist that she is today. Following that incredible adventure, Dawn has undertaken a number of commissions for the

My desire is to convey the dramatic and ever changing play of light in the vast cloudscapes of our shores.

From a young age, Dawn Lawrence felt tremendously inspired by the bustling Solent environment that she was surrounded by when growing up, as well as by William Wyllie’s maritime themed paintings.

Royal Navy and also foreign Navies around the world, including those of both Holland and Germany. More recently, she was commissioned to create a painting for the wardroom of HMS AMBUSH. Her insightful view on the subject of maritime scenes has lead to these prestigious achievements, and her skilled technique draws attention from the wider public. Dawn’s astounding passion for painting the sea has led to her also being commissioned to paint classic yachts, both in present day regattas and the historic and prestigious America’s Cup. The distinctive colours used within these paintings truly showcase the immense glamour, drama and excitement surrounding the festivities. Recording each act in a wonderfully modern style, her paintings capture the extraordinary quest for sailing excellence in the 21st century. This wonderful artist has had her work exhibited a number of times, including in The Wyllie Gallery, Knightsbridge and Chelsea, The Marine Gallery, Cowes, the Art Museum of Chianciano, the Gagliardi Gallery in London, and by invitation at the Naval and Military Club in St James’, London. These are distinguished galleries, and being asked to exhibit in them truly is a testament to how talented Dawn really is.

Dawn spoke with us about her current work, stating that she is “concentrating on capturing the beauty and energy of the skies around Britain’s stunning coastline. My desire is to convey the dramatic and ever changing play of light in the vast cloudscapes of our shores..”

Organ Detox We are pretty sure that you would not expect your car to run for thirty or forty years without some sort of tune up or service, yet it is outstanding how many of us expect that from our bodies. The world we now live in has more toxins and stressors that at any time before, and adrenal fatigue and hormone issues are becoming widespread, starting at a disturbingly young age.

“Substitute hot water and lemon for your usual morning caffeine fix and if it is palatable to you, add slices of fresh ginger, turmeric or both. ”

A few of the signs include depression, anxiety, insomnia, lethargy, gut issues, weight gain, a noticeable afternoon slump, skin problems, dehydration and mental fog, mood swings and apathy. If you suffer from these symptoms, obviously we are going to urge you to come and see us to be tested, but in the short term, there

are a few things that you can do independently to help to detox your major organs. Substitute hot water and lemon for your usual morning caffeine fix and if it is palatable to you, add slices of fresh ginger, turmeric or both. Set reminders to drink plenty of water, it is amazing how many of us do not drink enough dehydration is not just for hot climates. To help your liver, give the alcohol a break if possible, for at least a six-week period. Add to your diet; avocado, turmeric, cruciferous veggies, sour citrus such as lemons, limes, and grapefruit, swap potatoes for quinoa and if you really do rely on caffeine, please know that this is a red flag, but try organic green tea instead. To help your gut, include fermented foods such as kefir, more cruciferous vegetables, garlic, flax and chia seeds (throw them into a smoothie or sprinkle on a salad) and switch balsamic for apple cider vinegar in the dressing.

For your kidneys, flush, flush and flush, drink water. Add berries and parsley and seeds; it’s amazing how a handful of seeds can liven up salad or yoghurt if you are not dairy intolerant. For the pancreas and lungs, fresh pineapple juice, this is also wonderful for coughs and gives you a huge boost of vitamin C and can also help protein digestion. For the gallbladder, tart apples and unrefined virgin olive oil, read the labels carefully and buy the best quality that you can afford. Use these foods as your blueprint, add to these wild caught fish and organic meats, fresh herbs and spices. Balance your proteins and carbohydrates and be kind to your body. With just these simple tweaks, you will notice a change in your energy levels, your mood and sleep and often your weight.

Human Kitchens

Originally from Hayling Island in Hampshire, Ben did most of his growing up in Italy and has also spent a lot of time in Barcelona where he developed a keen eye for design.

He now runs Human Kitchens based in Swanmore, with offices in West Sussex and the Test Valley. He's had a successful career in kitchen design and has worked with some of the 'big names' in the UK kitchen industry. Human Kitchens specialise in bespoke, high quality, made-to-measure kitchens and Ben wanted to offer top quality kitchens at the fraction of the cost, together with excellent customer service. He says: "There are a lot of customers who would use a high-street retailer to source their kitchen and find it difficult (if not impossible) to purchase the size and style they wanted to fit their space. The materials could also be low quality; for instance, rather than being real oak, it would be veneer."

Quality, affordability and service are paramount to Ben, as shown by the fact that his company recently won Best in Customer Service 2017 award from Houzz. His clients would describe Human Kitchens as a company they can really work with, a company they get great quality from and a company with whom they get a great end result, without having to spend the earth. A happy customer, David Farr, confirms this: "We can't thank Ben and his team enough for the fabulous job they did on our kitchen. We worked with Ben for a few weeks beforehand, explaining the vision we had. He was able to help us by introducing suppliers and making suggestions that enhanced the whole project. From start to finish we were treated courteously and with patience by every team member we met. Old fashioned service from a fully professional team - can't recommend them higher." Project Date: April 2017

Ben is proud of the high quality 'British Made', hand-crafted kitchens they provide. He explains: "If someone wanted to buy a kitchen of our quality from the High Street it would be far too expensive. You will find in most cases that you are paying for the brand name, not the quality of the product." Human Kitchens set to overcome this by slashing the price of their handmade kitchens. They keep overheads to a minimum by avoiding the use of flashy showrooms and not charging hefty premiums for their brand. Ben tells us that this allows him to supply and fit a ÂŁ60,000 kitchen for well under half the price and still provide a perfect service. Ben continues: "I think, our craftsmen are amongst the best in the world. They come from a luxury yacht fitting background. Fitting luxury yachts involves working to unusual layouts and specific customer requirements, whilst achieving a perfect finish. There is a world of difference between a craftsman and a kitchen fitter. A kitchen fitter can fit a kitchen, but as soon as there is a slight curve in the wall or something is not quite right with the room, problems begin. A craftsman can make something wonderful out of that situation, as opposed to being stopped by it."

When Ben was asked how people would describe him he replied: "Passionate, I think would be the best word." If you are considering a new kitchen, Human Kitchens would love to hear from you.

LOCAL LIFE A VISIT FROM THE COUNTESS On the 25th of May, HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO paid a delightful visit to Treloar School and College. The Countess is Treloar’s Royal Patron, and was welcomed upon her arrival by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson, before proceeding on a tour, meeting students and staff along the way. Treloar School and College provides education and support to over 170 students with physical or learning difficulties each year, and were exceptionally grateful to the many funders who gave so generously towards the fundraising appeal which raised nearly £350,000 in total.

THE JANE AUSTEN ROSE Jane Austen’s House Museum is continuing its bicentenary commemorations with the launch of the Jane Austen Rose. The rose, developed by Harkness Roses, was unveiled on the 22nd of May at RHS Chelsea Flower Show by Jane Austen’s House Museum ambassador Alan Titchmarsh. Harkness Roses are generously donating a percentage of their proceeds to help support the Museum’s fundraising appeal to restore and protect Jane Austen’s precious home in the village of Chawton. The rose, a bright and vibrant orange bush rose, reflecting the vibrancy of Austen’s characters, celebrates Jane Austen’s life in her bicentenary year.
