As autumn draws in, the leaves begin to fall and summer salads are replaced with homely comfort food, and our wardrobes gradually move closer and closer to winter. This is the perfect time of year to curl up on the sofa or laze in the early autumn sun, while enjoying the latest issue of Beautiful South magazine…
In the health section, we explore some of the many fitness apps we have access to nowadays. Have a read to make sure you’re downloading the right app for you! This month we were honoured to be able to interview a fantastic local photographer – Sarah Sheldrake. We discuss her career, her education and what advice she has for aspiring photographers – an inspirational lady no matter where your interests lie.
This edition is – as always – packed full of engaging and insightful content which we hope you love as much as we do. Flip through to our style pages, where we draw inspiration from Septembers ‘Goodwood Revival’ – and you will find some wonderful vintage fashion articles… specifically our ‘Vintage Jewellery’ piece, where we give you a detailed guide on where to buy some truly unique pieces in the local area. If motoring is more your thing, take a peek at our review of the 1958 Jaguar XK150… a true nod to the classic vintage style we all love.
Check out our latest competition for a chance to win tickets to the Ageas Bowl – the picture-perfect home of Hampshire Cricket – to watch the Royal London ODI between England and the West Indies on Friday 29th September!
Our interiors page takes a different turn, with a ‘Modern Vintage’ guide – a look which is not easy to accomplish, however when pulled off creates a stunningly stylish effect.
Finally, if you’re a cheese lover like me, you will adore our latest ‘Producer Profile’… take a look and find out why! So, cosy up on the sofa or take a seat in the garden, and enjoy the latest issue!

ROSE SILENCE For those of us lucky enough to live in the South of England, the Rose Silence eau de parfum by Miller Harris has the power to transport us to simpler times, playing in delightful cottage gardens or wandering on long country walks with our parents. This may seem far-fetched, but the connection between scent and memory is no secret… Miller Harris has a talent for using this to their advantage every time. If the gorgeous packaging and bottle, or the idea of evoking fond memories isn’t enough to interest you, read on to be convinced by the incredible description Miller Harris gives on this scent… “Rose Silence elicits a solitary rose and an intimate embrace. Undertones of warm skin are created with creamy sandalwood and subtle musk’s of cashmere and patchouli. At its heart of course, is the rose. A rose, fresh and luminous, untouchable yet crisp, with a delicately fruity resonance of sweet mandarin and tangy blackcurrant top notes.”

The apps that make a difference Nowadays we have an app for everything, and health and fitness is no different. Whether you are trying to keep on top of your calorie intake, walk more steps each day, or even just drink more water, there is an app for it all. Due to the personal and convenient nature of them, they can be a massive help when you’re trying to make positive changes on a busy schedule, or even just if you struggle to stick to the goals you set. Having your phone notify you every 5 minutes that you need to go for a run today is quite convincing believe me!
MyFitnessPal If you are watching your weight, MyFitnessPal is one of the best apps to help you stay in control. Launched in 2005, the app has had plenty of time to work out any problems, unlike a lot of other, more recent apps. This has led to it being one of the smoothest and easiest to use apps on the marketplace. MyFitnessPal combines intelligent calorie-counting and food-logging with exercise tracking, providing you with an all-in-one platform to help you track your progress.
Nike+ Run Club
If running is your thing, the Nike+ Run Club app is sure to get you on your feet and get you smashing those miles. Whether you are just getting started or getting ready for your next race, the app offers you everything you need to help you run better, all in one easy-to-use place. The app allows you to track your progress in detail, showing you statistics on your pace, distance, routes and personal records with astounding accuracy. It also provides you with an option for personalised coaching, matched to your goals and current fitness levels, as well as a social space for runners to share information and motivation with friends and people with similar goals. If you don’t feel quite ready to grab your trainers and get up and go yet, download the NHS Choices ‘Couch to 5K’ podcasts from iTunes, which give you a weekly plan to get you started, designed for true beginners.
There have been rising numbers of yoga classes in recent years, however, if like me you struggle to commit to going to a class every week due to a busy schedule, Pocket Yoga could be the perfect app for you. With options allowing you to choose different practices, different durations and different difficulty levels, the app can help you become stronger and more flexible, and can boost your mental well-being without you even having to leave your home.
“In this day and age there is unfortunately no excuse for us to sit back and be lazy with all of these incredible applications at our fingertips, so get up and get downloading!” 12 | Beautiful South | September/ October 2017 |HEALTH & BEAUTY
Freeletics Body resistance workouts are the exercise method of the moment, having proved themselves to be an excellent way to improve balance, flexibility and strength without machinery or equipment. Freeletics is an app which provides us with highly effective 10-25 minute workouts that don’t require a gym or any equipment – great for anyone who wants to stay in the comfort of their own home to complete their workout. The app also offers you a personal fitness plan, allowing you to make the most out of the workouts on offer, as well as builtin psychological mechanisms to keep you going even when you feel like quitting.
The A/W fashion season is very nearly here, so we have collected some of the best nail looks from the catwalks so you can stay on trend via your manicure. LADYLIKE NEUTRALS A pinkish nude nail colour is wonderful as it looks fresh, healthy and natural, but still a little unique. Traditionally, we are used to seeing nude nails paired with white French tips – but avoiding that detail is the way to go in 2017. Not Just a Pretty Face nail lacquer from Essie www.essie.co.uk £7.99
SMOKY GREY Grey hues have generated a significant amount of buzz lately. If you’re looking to experiment with a new hue, a grey shade could be perfect for you. The trick is to choose one that stands out and isn’t too gloomy! Enamoured Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer in Confession, by Marc Jacobs. www.johnlewis.com £16.00
MODERN METALLICS A subtle metallic manicure will be sure to start your season with a bang. This look is at once bold and chic, and will brighten up dreary autumn outfits perfectly. Product 1 (Silver): Mia Nail Polish and product 2 (Gold): Gala Nail Polish, both from Nailmatic, available from The Hambledon, Winchester. £7.50 www.thehambledon.com
VICIOUSLY ELEGANT For a long time, black nail varnish has been associated with gothic teenage girls, however red carpets and catwalks this season have told a different story. The trick for this look is to keep your nails short and neatly filed, in order to give your manicure a chic and luxe edge. Le Vernis in Gris Obscur by Chanel www.chanel.com £20.00
BLOOD RED A red nail will always represent glamour, seduction and playfulness in just the right way, so for me it is forever a classic. Wear with a monochromatic outfit to really make it pop! The Thrill of Brazil nail lacquer from O.P.I www.opiuk.com £12.50

Quaint tea rooms, cobbled streets and traditional pubs … Old Portsmouth is full of beautiful - and delicious - things to be discovered.
Old Portsmouth was once a busy and bustling district due to its location near the dockyard, however much has changed since the old days. Today, it is a wonderfully peaceful corner of Portsmouth, featuring delightful cobbled streets lined with historic homes, old-fashioned pubs and gorgeous classic tea rooms. So far from being chaotic, it is a great place for couples and families to visit, no matter what time of year. With plenty to see, we recommend taking a leisurely walk around the area in order to ensure you see all of the sights. Begin your walk at the Royal Garrison church – or the Domus Dei, its Latin name - which was founded in 1212 initially as a hospice, by the Bishop of Winchester. Take a look inside at the fantastic interiors, featuring spectacular stained glass windows and incredible arching ceilings… a sight to see no matter where your interests lie. The church is an English Heritage property, and therefore has plenty of fascinating historic significance, including the story as to how it lost its roof…

The Hotwalls Studios
If you need a break after a while spent meandering around the lovely area, take respite in one of the many stunning pubs, restaurants or cafes, such as Manna Tearoom. Manna is a stylish tea room which somehow perfectly combines a quintessential British style with a sleek modern one, creating an alluring overall aesthetic that you will struggle to leave. Serving delicious Italian coffee and a range of speciality teas, alongside tasty breakfasts and artfully served light lunches, this really is a captivating little haven in the centre of Old Portsmouth.
“Today, it is a wonderfully peaceful corner of Portsmouth, featuring delightful cobbled streets lined with historic homes, old-fashioned pubs and gorgeous classic tea rooms.” To fully embrace the historic and creative merit of Old Portsmouth, grab a coffee and a bite to eat in The Canteen, located in the new Arts Quarter at The Hotwalls. The Hotwalls Studios are situated inside of the impressive Point Battery & Barracks, a unique heritage site of national importance. In 2014, Portsmouth City Council secured funding to transform its largely disused buildings into a vibrant new creative quarter, in order to create an environment of mutual support for artists, and to inspire creativity and innovation. From this, The Canteen was born. A vibrant, deli-style café with freshly baked pastries and juices for breakfast, a wide selection of mouth-watering salads and sandwiches for lunch, and exciting evening dishes accompanied by a range of wines and beers – a fantastic experience no matter what time of day you visit. A waterfront deck creates an exceptional dining experience, allowing you to feel almost within touching distance of the sparkling water… or dine inside and enjoy the rustic décor and beautiful architecture, reminding you of the incredible history behind the building.
Above photos: The Canteen
If you’re in the mood for some more traditional pub grub, head to The Dolphin, located opposite Portsmouth Cathedral. Established in 1716, this is Portsmouth’s oldest pub, and a great place to unwind in comfortable surroundings whilst enjoying a range of local and international beers, wines and cocktails. The menu openly boasts time-honoured pub classics such as Sausage & Mash and Ham, Egg & Chips, as well as a selection of brilliant burgers and lighter sandwiches, including the Chargrilled Halloumi and Roasted Vegetable Wrap. As you’re so close to the sea, it would be a shame not to try what the coast does best – fresh fish. The Still & West is located right on the harbour front and features a massive courtyard for drinking and dining, making it a fantastic place to finish off your day by catching the late afternoon and early evening sun. Their menu reads proudly that they are ‘Famous for Fish’, and the divine dishes they serve don’t leave you questioning this whatsoever. Whether you go for a classic such as Fish & Chips, or something more titillating – for instance the Pan-Fried Sea Trout with radish and crab potato salad – you will be pleasantly surprised by the freshness and quality of the products used, as well as the overall taste and presentation of each dish. No matter where you choose to eat or when you choose to visit, one thing is guaranteed when making the trip to Old Portsmouth – it will be a superb encounter. The area is a world away from its old incarnation as a dockland hive of vice and debauchery - now it truly is an ideal place to experience the quiet life. Left photo: The Dolphin

Stuck in the mud… September brings with it the start of the Rugby season, and therefore it’s time to pull on your boots and get stuck in the mud for some great autumnal exercise… or time to grab a beer, kick back and watch from the side-lines. Spectating… Most local clubs have games going on every weekend, be it on a Saturday or a Sunday. The atmosphere at the games can be incredible, as both players and spectators are always extremely passionate – making spectating often as exhilarating as playing the game itself. Get together with some friends and head down to the next local match, support your local team and get some fresh air whilst enjoying the quintessentially British sport.
Playing… If you have a busy schedule and are only free certain nights a week then you are in luck, as due to the amount of rugby clubs we have near us, you are bound to find one with a training night that fits you. Some of the best clubs around include Petersfield, Alresford, Winchester and Portsmouth, and all welcome new players each season. Due to the all-inclusive nature of rugby (there is a position for every single body type), you can’t really say no to joining in this autumn and winter. Petersfield Rugby Club are always looking for new players to join their teams, so if you’re looking to get back on the pitch, call them now on 01730 264588. If you’re looking for a bigger club, Portsmouth Rugby & Football Club offers 1st-4th teams, plus a Vets team, alongside some great facilities and food. www.portsmouthrugbyclub.co.uk

An unrelenting assault on the senses :
1958 Jaguar XK150 by Wayne Gorrett ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ – a maxim that rang loud and true during the heady motor-racing days around the middle of the last century. Back then, performance meant everything for most car manufacturers and for Jaguar, it was reflected in their race-tested and affordable XK series, which took pride of place in their road car catalogue.
of lasting quality. Two separate main seats can be laterally adjusted for the tallest driver. The driving position is comfortable and typically ‘flat’ for its day. The main controls fall well to hand, visibility is good and, while the bonnet is not aggressively long, it remains largely unseen.
Jaguar produced the XK series cars just after the Second World War, as a means to test the newlydeveloped XK engine, which was first aired in the astonishingly fast and eye catching XK120 (the ‘C’ type), subsequently superseded by the XK140 in 1954.
Once warmed up, the lively, white-knuckle acceleration continues through the power band. There is a wonderful sensation of having almost unlimited power underfoot. Steering, while heavy and cumbersome at slow speeds, ran straight and true at 50mph. When asked, it stopped quickly, without fuss and in a straight line.
In true Jaguar development style, the subsequent XK150 produced from 1957 to 1961, retained the good parts of the previous models but offered more in the way of speed, handling and refinement. Talk of the XK150 focussed on its new Dunlop disc brakes. Brake fade from repeated high-speed stops had been a problem of the earlier, drumbraked cars, but now the XK had stopping power to match its prodigious straight-line speed. Climbing in, a discreet but wonderful aroma of old leather, grease and oil permeates a general air
Tootling around the bustling streets of London on a warm, summers afternoon – sans seat belts or any semblance of modern safety kit – was an exhilarating and exhausting experience. Built in an era long before the words ‘health’ and ‘safety’ ungraciously removed the ‘Great’ from our collective Britain, the XK150 remains a thunderously glorious machine. It delivers a true assault on the senses and is a notable milestone in the evolution of British sports and performance cars.

Behind the lens... Interview by Poppy Baker
arah Sheldrake is a photographer based in Petersfield, whose natural charm and lust for life shines through in her work, giving her a unique edge. She shoots mainly portraiture, however also works with a small number of brands and companies, always producing stunning images in a beautiful style. With Sarah’s talent for bringing her subjects out of their shells and showing deeper amounts of personality than many portrait photographers, Beautiful South couldn’t wait to sit down one on one and find out more…
When asked what the highlight of her career has been so far, Sarah gave me three which she could not choose between… “shooting the young doctors NHS campaign was absolutely amazing as I got to photograph something so important. Secondly, working for Bedales is brilliant and was a personal ambition of mine.” She goes on to say she loves how creative the environment is at Bedales, and she feels her aesthetic works so well with theirs. “I also love working for Titley & Marr, an international fabric design company.” Sarah enjoys taking the fabrics somewhere and photographing them in different, more creative settings – using props, locations to stylise and add something We start by simply discussing her career, which Sarah speaks about different to the images. / PRODUCER PROFILE
“The cheese world is a really fun and friendly environment to work in, and people are so passionate about it!
friendly environment to work in, and people are so passionate about it!”
Introducing HAMPSHIRE CHEESES Nestled in the gorgeous green valleys of the Hampshire countryside sits Hampshire Cheeses - artisan cheese-makers who have won numerous awards for their traditionally made products… specifically their British Camembert, which has been said to be ‘good enough to make a Frenchman weep’! Stacey Hedges is a cheese-obsessed Australian, who travelled the world exploring her love of dairy, before making her home in the heart of Hampshire. She began making cheese in her kitchen, using buckets of milk collected from local farmers, before her husband eventually told her to get out of the kitchen and do it properly. This led to the company’s creation in 2005, in a very small creamery in Herriard, Hampshire.
We really take so much care of every cheese that leaves our creamery – to make sure it lands on your plate in perfect condition every time.
Stacey speaks to us about why she chose to settle in Hampshire, saying “It was an area my husband had spent time in when he was young and we had friends in the area… it’s also not too far from The Big Smoke - I am a city girl from Sydney so need to get my fix of city life every so often!”
Following the decision to start the company, Stacey took off to visit cheesemongers from across the land, asking ‘what is the British cheese market missing?’ The answers showed clearly what she needed to make… an English Camembert. Although there were others on the market, none were even close to rivalling the French cheeses. She visited many French Camembert dairies, tinkered with different recipes, and met with Ivan Larcher, the French cheese consultant who is considered to be the master of such cheese related matters. Soon after, Tunworth was born – the Camembert style cheese which everyone loves. Specifically developed to have a thinner, more wrinkly rind, the Tunworth has a distinctively more flavoursome taste to it. Charlotte Spruce joined the company a short while after its creation, Hampshire born and bred and with a passion for field to fork food production. Co-running the business together, the two have come far, with even Raymond Blanc describing their Tunworth cheese to be ‘the best Camembert in the world.’ Initially, Stacey was making only 30 cheeses a week, but now the company has continuously expanded to the point where they are making roughly 800 a day… a massive increase which has led to the company employing 8 staff, something Stacey is very proud of. She says the best thing about her career is that “the cheese world is a really fun and
Their decision to stick to traditional cheese-making methods means the process is labour-intensive, yet the results are phenomenal. The working day starts at 6am, when the milk gets delivered to the creamery. The team then begins setting the curd, cutting and ladling by hand, turning the cheeses in the ripening room, and wrapping and packing the finished product… along with many other tasks. They once experimented with using machinery to complete some of the more labour-intensive tasks, but soon gave up on the idea as it slightly changed the taste of the cheese! Stacey speaks of their success, and what she thinks sets them apart, saying “We really take so much care of every cheese that leaves our creamery – to make sure it lands on your plate in perfect condition every time.” She continues to say “We have won lots of awards over the years which has been amazing and makes all the hard work worthwhile. The thing that makes me really happy is seeing my team enjoy their work and be so proud of what we make. That is worth everything.”

The Maas Method In biblical times, food was raw and natural, there were no chemicals or toxins. It was a diet that was in full balance with nature and the seasons. Nothing was force ripened, genetically modified or sprayed with pesticide. It really was the original organic lifestyle. Today, our world is full of biochemical agents, pathogens, and fungi that drastically impact negatively on our health. Almost nothing escapes environmental assaults. Knowing how to combat this is a minefield, as there is so much misinformation; well-meaning bloggers whose hearts are pure, but who don’t have the training to back up the science; propaganda in the media and fake news all combine to create much confusion. The safest way to navigate, is to apply ‘The Five Laws of Perfect Health,’ or what we refer to as ‘The Maas Method,’ which simply put are the five molecules of health: sugars, proteins, fats, minerals, and electricity. It is the balance of these five molecules that exist within us all that ultimately determines the overall health of the individual.
The first law is to go anti-fungal. Fundamentally, our wheat, yeast, sugar based diet is making us sick and is the cause of many of our modern day ailments. By reducing the fungal and toxic load in your diet and controlling sugar and carbohydrate intake, by using a low GI diet, you can reboot the nervous system as a means to holistic recovery. The second law is to eat the correct proteins, it is important to match these to your genetic and metabolic type. Likewise, for the third law, it is equally important to achieve the correct balance of healthy fats. Over the years, fat has been vilified, but the good ones are essential to our wellbeing and adrenal and thyroid health. The fourth law is to ensure the correct pH balance as disease cannot live in an alkaline state. It is crucial to correctly balance acid and alkaline foods as the pH in our body has an enormous impact on our energy and our ability to fight disease.
The fifth and final law is a little more complex, it is effectively our bioelectricity, which is the electric energy associated with all living organisms. The human body has organs which are dedicated to sensing electromagnetic impulses, both inside and outside the human body. For example, the pineal gland is the evolutionary descendant of our ancestors’ ability to perceive light, which regulates the circadian rhythms of the body - our biological rhythms that are attuned to the daynight cycle and our sleep patterns. The Maas Method, when practiced as a way of life, will ensure a healthy body and mind, optimum energy and provide the essential toolkit needed to help fight modern disease.

...the festive fracas with a short break this Christmas The Christmas season in Britain gets longer every year, and seems to begin in September or even August. However, the year is not over yet! Perhaps the best antidote to thoughts of the nights drawing in is a short break to lift the encroaching winter blues – and this can be a wonderful time of year to visit Europe’s great cities. September and October provide ample opportunity for a last minute dose of late summer sunshine – or perhaps a visit to one of the autumn’s new exhibitions or concerts. Or travel in November and December for authentic winter experiences from the Northern Lights in Scandinavia to atmospheric Christmas markets which recreate the festive spirit of years gone by.

Southern Europe offers warm sunshine throughout September and October, and coast and countryside destinations offer excellent value for money ‘shoulder season’ deals. The Mediterranean island of Sicily is at its best in the autumn, when the excessive summer heat has passed, but the climate is still warm enough to enjoy exploring the fascinating ancient temples and ruins in the morning, before a delicious al fresco lunch – perhaps with a glass of the local wine – and a refreshing dip in the sea, or a hotel swimming pool, in the afternoon. The sea itself is at its warmest in September and October, as the summer sunshine has gradually heated the waters over the previous months.
For those in search of a cultural city “ break, look no further than the historic cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada – each of which combines delicious tapas, striking Moorish architecture, and fascinating history
This is also the perfect time of year to explore the towns and countryside of Andalucia. Whilst the summer months draw crowds to the ‘costas’, the true heart of this region is inland, where traditional white villages – pueblos blancos – remain untouched by tourism, and fields of olives, vines and sunflowers cover the hills. For those in search of a cultural city break, look no further than the historic cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada – each of which combines delicious authentic tapas, striking Moorish architecture, and fascinating history – or visit Malaga, now one of Europe’s most exciting art cities with a host of new museums and galleries. When November arrives, you have to travel a little further for sunshine, but Morocco, Cyprus and Madeira still offer warm days within a short flight. Alternatively, embrace the start of winter with a trip to Scandinavia or Iceland, where beautiful snow-dusted landscapes and the chance to see the northern lights await. Make sure to book an excursion with an expert local guide for the best chance of spotting the lights – but remember, you also need a bit of good luck. By the time December comes, the festive season is in full swing, and you may be ready to embrace Christmas. From early December until the New Year, traditional Christmas markets

The Ageas Bowl
Picture-perfect, quintessential views meet a vision for the future The Ageas Bowl, located on the outskirts of Southampton, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years and 2017 has seen further landmark development, though only the start of an ambitious journey. Hampshire Cricket’s home since the turn of the millennium, the Ageas Bowl is now a versatile allrounder, a leading destination for business, leisure and entertainment. Aside from a jam-packed summer calendar – including domestic cricket, England Internationals and high-profile music concerts – the venue is home to a state-of-the-art Hilton hotel, equipped with an immaculately furnished, Sir Ian Botham-inspired restaurant, BEEFY’S, as well as the UK’s very first eforea spa – not forgetting an expertly designed, picturesque 18hole golf course, Boundary Lakes, which opened in July.
In March, BEEFY’S relaunched as a tapas bar & brasserie restaurant, delivering a contemporary dining experience whilst still offering the most spectacular views across the Ageas Bowl’s lush outfield. Enjoy tempting tapas from BEEFY’S Bar and delicious a la carte dining in the refurbished restaurant, all while savouring an ambience which reflects the uncompromising quality of our ingredients; indulge in naturally-sourced produce and a pure dining experience that evokes a yearning for the country. But it is not only British hospitality that Hilton at the Ageas Bowl excels in. Acting as a perfect retreat from the relentless pace of modern life, eforea spa promises ultimate relaxation - boasting a multitude of thermal experiences and luxurious journeys, you’ll be sure to find yourself emerging brighter, refreshed and reconnected.
Restore mind, body and soul courtesy of Elemisdesigned signature treatments, immerse yourself amongst the spa’s luxurious facilities and relax in the tranquil atmosphere of eforea’s unique café. The Ageas Bowl’s latest addition, Boundary Lakes Golf Course, further enhances the venue’s versatility and beauty, its undulating landscape and shimmering lakes offering a magnificent backdrop to the iconic destination. Complete with USGA standard greens and signature water features, the carefully constructed par-69 parkland is sure to provide a stern test for both high and low handicappers alike. Unsurprisingly, Boundary Lakes has been subject to unprecedented demand but, despite its five and seven-day membership packages being fully subscribed, there are still a whole range of corporate packages, society and pay-and-play opportunities to make the most of. Just two years on from its grand opening, Hilton at the Ageas Bowl has firmly established a reputation for being one of the South Coast’s premier conference venues, whilst delivering memorable overnight stays for travelling business people and tourists seeking luxury, relaxation and the very best of British hospitality. Hampshire Cricket’s home provides a wealth of luxurious suites, unrivalled facilities and an uncompromising commitment to quality. From intimate meetings to extravagant celebrations for up to 450 guests, experience a personalised service assuring unsurpassed quality.
