With the New Year upon us these next couple of months offer the perfect opportunity to implement some positive change in to our lives. Many of us will transform our wardrobes, with others setting New Year’s resolutions, striving to see more optimism. Regardless of how each of us welcome 2018, Beautiful South will present you with a fraction of all things bright and beautiful across the south. In this month’s edition we explore The New Forest – a beautiful district rich in wildlife offering fabulous tourist attractions. We concentrate on the excellent range of food and drink available pin-pointing you in the direction of some of our favourite eateries. The Gentlemen’s Notebook draws attention to how appearance is key to feeling confident in your own skin and can be achieved by investing in some classic, luxury and timeless shirts. A profile on designer Gresham Blake highlights his pride and passion which he executes in his creative tailoring techniques to fulfil the ‘need’ and ‘wants’ of his customers. Our Style Insider is about Power Dressing and how it has been a woman’s way to self-express for decades. This read inspires ladies to step out of their comfort zone and to avoid wearing what their body feels

at ease in. Ladies are encouraged to wear clothing they feel best represents the spirits of their youth. Meanwhile, for those of you who are petrol heads, you can read all about the Audi S4 on its attractive design and powerful engine. The vehicle is a refresh of the Audi A4 with the interior design being contemporary and overall body being well constructed. This edition also delves in to the success story of Mum and Dad’s Kitchen based in Southsea. We love our local area and are so pleased to see a local company positively grow and develop. Beautiful South caught up with Olympic gold medalist and Great Britain women’s national field hockey team Captain Alex Danson. She was born and raised in Hampshire before moving away to concentrate on her sporting career. Be encouraged by her determination and willingness to inspire others. Wherever you may be, sit back and relax, enjoy flicking through your local lifestyle magazine, and Happy New Year from all of us at Beautiful South…

style insider THE FASHIONED BODY By Danielle Beavis–Smith

Remember power suits? That certain style of clothing that offered women the armour of confidence and amatory? Sure you do! Power dressing has been a woman’s way to self-express for decades.

The man to thank for the ‘Power Dress’ evolution is ‘Helmut Newton’. He developed a fashion movement by beautifying a women’s body through photography and fashion. The ‘little black dress’ soon took a back seat and the power suits swiftly became the forefront of the fashion runaways. Those fragile stereotypes of women soon dismantled and a version of a strong independent woman aroused! This style of dress continuously seeks a tangible message of empowerment that gives us the confidence to be the best version of ourselves. We have no doubt the power dressing created that flash back in your mind to those times you wore almost anything you wanted because you felt fabulous in doing so. Well, we want to create that for you again! Step out of your comfort zone and avoid wearing what your body feels most at ease in. Instead, wear clothing you feel best represents the spirits of your youth. By that, we don’t mean rummage through your wardrobe for those tight trouser suits you brought in your teens, but to dress yourself in a way that brings happiness and admiration to your soul. With fashion joining the movement of female empowerment, there is truly no better time than for you to take risks and dress to exceed that fearlessness confidence we continually looking for as women.

style EDIT Comfort and Quality The art of power dressing should always result in you feeling good with an element of comfort. Choose garments that are tailoring; something that hangs nicely and fluctuates your figure. Take a suit jacket; a classic cut, light weighted fabric that oozes superiority and sophistication.

Red tailored wide-leg trousers, £140, Karen Millen, Southampton, Portsmouth

Mila Jacket, £199.00, Hobbs, Southampton, Portsmouth

Texture print pencil skirt, £40, Oasis, Southampton, Portsmouth

Statement Touches Don’t be afraid to make a stylish statement. Opt for those bold coloured outfit pieces or even that luxe statement accessory that will immediately elevate your look!

At Beautiful South we believe every woman has their own personal style and individuality which can be expressed through visual balance by investing in the best ‘highstreet’ steals! We are passionate about giving women advice and the tools to dress themselves to feel fabulous...

The Examination First things first, stop comparing yourself to the model you saw displaying that dream like outfit. Instead create a self-assessment of yourself by examining your body shape and bodily features. The clothes you buy should always complement your seamless lines to help your discover that new found confidence we all need!

Styling tip: If you describe yourself as a woman with ‘shapely curves’ wide leg trousers and pencil skirts will always highlight that beautiful silhouette of yours.

Styling tip: Invest in statement and versatile pieces that can instantly upgrade and lift your day to day looks. But remember… comfort comes first.

The Crisp White Shirt It is important that your appearance should always look crisp, clean, and perfectly pressed. By investing in a classic white shirt you will always look timelessly stylish and you will find it will pair with almost anything in your wardrobe!

The Power Blow Never underestimate the power of a blow dry to create that polished, groom finish. By treating yourself to a professional blow dry you will leave the salon with a new found spirit that enhances your outfit attire. So what are you waiting for? Master these rules to find the perfect wear that will give you that new found confidence to fuel your spirit this season!

How can the Bank of Mum and Dad help my son purchase his first property? My son is struggling to save for a deposit to purchase his first home. I’m eager to assist if I can. I’ve heard the phrase ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ a few times but don’t really understand it. Can you help? - Mr Harris from Winchester The Bank of Mum and Dad (and now also Granny and Grandad) became the UK’s 9th biggest lender for first time buyers in 2017. This is due to a number of reasons: rising house prices, slower wage growth and the size of deposits needed as a down payment – it’s no surprise your son is finding it difficult to fly the nest. It’s great that you’d like to help boost his chances of getting onto the property ladder, and there are a number of ways you, as the Bank of Mum and Dad, can help: By gifting a deposit – You can gift a deposit sum which will go towards the property purchase. Without a deposit you are unable to buy a property with a mortgage; therefore you can help your son by providing a larger deposit. This could also potentially lower the cost of interest rate that will be payable on the mortgage. Additional borrowing on the family home – Providing you own your home, you can release equity from your property. You can take out a mortgage and gift the funds to your son – no matter your age. Joint mortgage - Sole ownership – Have you considered a joint mortgage? This could potentially increase his purchasing power and enable him to get onto the property ladder. But don’t worry. Being jointly named on a mortgage doesn’t mean you’re accountable for it; the ownership of the property would be in your son’s name and the monthly repayment responsibility stops with him. Help to Buy and Shared Ownership – The property sector’s knight in shining armour, the government’s Help to Buy scheme provides a realistic

Lisa Wedge, Office Manager at Newbury Building Society’s Winchester branch.

platform for first-time buyers to boost their purchasing power. With as little as a 5% deposit needed and for Shared Ownership a mortgage that requires owning anything from 5% of the share value, getting onto the property ladder is no longer a pipedream. Just remember: Before you make any decisions, it’s always advisable to seek independent advice. Helping your son may seem like the right thing to do, but do ensure that it is affordable for you and any agreements entered into are clear to all parties involved.

Good luck! If like Mr Harris, you would like to talk about how the Bank of Mum and Dad can work for you, please contact us and arrange an appointment in a branch local to you or by telephone. We are known for providing a tailored and individual service and our qualified mortgage advisers are also available for appointments on Saturdays.

Discover the benefits of

hot yoga By Joanna Young

Being a dedicated yogi follower, I am always looking to find new and exciting ways to practice. Just recently, I have ventured into the world of hot yoga. Apparently, you can burn off around 700 calories per session. So what's this all about or is just a load of hot air? Fitness and wellbeing are important to all of us and vital for our happiness and health. Whatever our age, we are all looking to preserve our fitness and find inner calm. Well I think I have just found the answer. This popular fitness class has now launched in the Portsmouth area, with sessions at four venues across Portsmouth, Southsea and Cosham.

Hotpod is Europe’s largest yoga business, running 50,000 classes in 35 locations across 7 countries. Celebrity fans include Andy Murray, Nicole Scherzinger and Lady Gaga.

“The 37 degree heat warms the muscles allowing you to ease into the class even if you’re really inflexible.” The ethos behind hotpod is "Working the body, calming the mind." This one hour experience helps you escape the stresses of everyday life, enabling you to relax and recharge. As well as the mental benefits, you will achieve greater flexibility, strength and overall fitness. The class is a one hour vinyasa flow which takes place in a portable heated pod. The pod resembles a giant inverted bouncy castle with curved walls and muted lighting. A calming scent of bergamot, lavender and orange floats in the air. Dark and heated to a temperature of 37 degrees, the pod immerses you in a calming and nurturing experience, reminiscent of being in the womb. Hotpod Yoga is designed for all ages and abilities, empowering you to work at your own pace. Lisa Rattray, lead

instructor guides you through various postures, the heat helps to relax your muscles, improving flexibility. "Hotpod is great for people of all ages. The 37 degree heat warms the muscles allowing you to ease into the class even if you're really inflexible. It gets the heart working and helps build up a good sweat. It's a little cooler than some other hot studios - avoiding over-exertion and allowing everyone to relax into the class." From the first session, I was hooked! It's a wonderful and invigorating experience, with both physical and mental benefits. I loved the warmth and cosiness of the pod. It's a great way to escape the chaos of my daily life whilst improving my core strength and flexibility. I definitely ache less and look forward to the weekly sanctuary of the pod.

So interested in trying a class for free? For the months of January and February, Beautiful South readers can try their first class for free. Simply register on line at and book a Single Class Pass, entering the code HPYSOUTH at checkout. Or email Lisa, quoting Beautiful South and see for yourself.

Alcohol As we start the new year, most of us break our resolutions fairly quickly. Promises made for a vague moment in the future are easily uttered but far harder to adhere to, yet despite this, most people still look to the new year to detox after the excesses of the season, the first to go is usually alcohol. Have you ever noticed that you can no longer drink like you used to? That where you could once party like a rock star and leap out of bed the next day, you now sense the alcohol in your system, you feel sluggish, your taste buds are off, you have headaches and feel horrible. There is a simple explanation for this. As we age our liver starts to shrink, so alcohol stays in our system for longer, there is less fluid in our body, so the alcohol in our bloodstream is more concentrated and takes longer to break down, effectively we get drunk quicker and take longer to repair. As defined by The American Society of Clinical Oncology, a heavy drinker is a woman who drinks more than eight units a week and a man 15, which differs greatly to the current NHS guidelines of 14 units each. The truth is that nobody knows for sure

14 | Beautiful South | January/February 2018

what, if any, the safe level is, so while we may think that disciplining ourselves to one glass of wine with dinner is modest, in real terms, it’s not. Drinking is on the rise globally, which is astounding when you consider that we now know that there are confirmed links between alcohol use and breast, throat, neck, voice box, liver, and colon cancer. The risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer increases by 5% and post-menopausal by a significant 9%. If that’s not enough, regularly drinking, even a little, above recommended levels, can increase your risk of dementia, obesity, stroke, liver and heart disease. It is a known depressant, as the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages is ethanol, which is the substance that makes you drunk. Ethanol is produced by yeasts when they digest the sugar in certain carbohydrate-rich foods, such as grapes or grains. It has a depressing effect on judgement and reasoning which is why there are so many cringeworthy morning-after recriminations. Long term, this can lead to mood disorders, anxiety and depression and on occasions, alcohol-related brain damage.

When you consider this line up of terrifying risks, you would probably have better odds skydiving. So why is it the world’s most popular legal drug? The alcohol industry is big business, not just manufacturers but pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs. There is far more profit in alcohol than food, so you are encouraged to drink, it’s the first thing that you are offered on arrival anywhere. There are enticements of salty nuts or olives to increase thirst, and that is before the social pressures, that age-old cry of ‘just have one’ and the look of suspicion if you ask for water. The problem is that one lowers your judgement and that in turn leads to two or three and before you know it you have sunk a bottle. Instead of one virtuous dry month, then reverting to old habits, take a long-term view. Try not keeping alcohol in the house, alternate the days you drink to allow your liver a chance to rejuvenate and try to limit it to legitimate occasions, and if you know you won’t just have one, drink a spritzer, or ask for half a shot.

Beautiful South’s Samuel Poole explores the exceptional range of bars, restaurants and quaint tearooms on offer across The New Forest.

Visiting the area, whether you are seeing towns and villages, or going to one of the many attractions, you will be left feeling invigorated. The sense of history in The New Forest remains strong and the ancient system established by William the Conqueror to protect and manage the woodlands and wilderness heaths is still very much in place today.

There are few places in England where the ancient landscape has remained so unchanged. In 1079 when William the Conqueror named the area as his ‘new hunting forest’, little would he know almost 1,000 years later his ‘Nova Foresta’ would remain its mystery and romance.

Presenting endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, as well as plenty of indoor establishments to appreciate, there is something available to all. A perfect short break, or a brief day visit, means the area is accommodating for a wide range of people with different desires.

When dining away from the comfort of your home expectations are continually high on the food and service you receive. The New Forest is no swindler when it comes to quality and deliciousness. Their range of traditional country pubs work in harmony with smaller tearooms and independent coffee houses. The Drift Inn, near Lyndhurst, is best known locally for its log fires, large gardens, real ales and locally sourced menu. Mouth watering food is presented wonderfully on each plate creating a meal which will inevitably be enjoyed when consumed. The pub and restaurant are also accommodating to families with two children’s play areas. The homely space can also be the picturesque conclusion to your country walk with wellies, walking boots and dogs welcome.

E D U R S S E L R E L RIL 4 Audi S

By Wayne Gorrett The world of performance saloons has repopulated several times since the first generation of BMWs spawned in the 1970s – those four-door quicks with brutal, ill-disciplined power, monstrous bling and bellowing exhausts. Behind such automotive chest-thumping is a raft of cars that perhaps prefer less of the limelight, the quieter, less rude thrillers – like the redesigned 2017 Audi S4, the high performance variant of Audi’s compact executive car A4. A model refresh late last year took the A4’s already purposeful shape and gave it even more intent with enhancements that included 19-inch alloys, LED headlights, reshaped air vents, rear diffuser, discrete boot spoiler, quad tailpipes and subtle use of ‘S4’ and ‘V6T’ badging. The S4’s interior design is contemporary and very well constructed, but its looks are scarcely different to the A4, aside from the optional 12.3-inch configurable Virtual Cockpit digital driver instruments with three display modes. There is a flat-bottomed steering wheel and ‘S’ embossed sports seats.

At the heart of the new S4 is the 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 power plant. It is brand new and develops 349hp (up 20hp) and a nicely-rounded 500Nm (up 60Nm). The new engine is 14kg lighter and more efficient than the supercharged unit it replaces.

“THE S4 IS TERRIFIC FUN TO DRIVE AND THE NEW ENGINE IS AN ABSOLUTE BELTER, WITH ALL 500NM OF TORQUE AVAILABLE FROM A LOWLY 1,370RPM.” In common with every Audi S model, power is transmitted to the road by Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive. During normal driving, the selflocking centre differential has a 60/40 rear bias, but is capable of sending 70 per cent of torque to the front or 85 per cent to the rear, depending on the operating situation. The engine is paired with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

28 | Beautiful South | January/February 2018 | MOTORING

The S4 is terrific fun to drive and the new engine is an absolute belter, with all 500Nm of torque available from a lowly 1,370rpm. In Dynamic mode, the car muscles up with firmer suspension and noticeably more growl to the exhaust – but, rest assured there’s no fake piped engine noise here – it’s as genuine as the thrill. The steering also weights up, which takes a little getting used to after the lighter, friendlier setting in Comfort mode, but thankfully you can set up an Individual mode to dial the assistance back in while everything else is set up for go-fast. The S4 is superbly balanced and for most of the time defies its 1,700kg bulk. However, there is hesitance when changing direction through a challenging set of bends – as if the front rubber wants to scrub – but the quattro system makes a quick adjustment to stop it happening. The new Audi S4 is not an exuberant machine, but a perfect example of ‘less enthusiast, more enthusiasm’. The new S4 is lighter, slightly faster and more technologically advanced than its predecessor, as it brings the raft of charms from its A4 sibling to the quicker part of the executive saloon segment. Undoubtedly a thriller less rude.

Meeting Gold Medalist Alex Danson MBE Interview by Samuel Poole

etermination has made Alex Danson the sportsperson we see today. A tenacious hockey player representing England and Great Britain on international platforms, the Olympian tells Beautiful South Magazine how a developing career has made her the person we see today…

“I look at my gold medal and cannot believe it happened. It was all about sheer planning and knowing we can achieve it. We planned as well as we could and took one day at a time. If I could divide my gold medal into little pieces to share with all those who have supported me then I would.”

Alex, now 32, identified hockey was the sport she adored, when she played for entertainment with her mum, brother and sister in the garden.

Last summer, the Alex Danson Hockey Academy was launched, aiming to engage 10,000 children with the sport over the next three years. “Whatever sport young people play it is good for them. Hockey is so much more than being active.

“I started playing regularly with the local hockey club. When I was about 15-years-old I made the junior stage, and this was when I knew I loved playing. I had to go for it. I was playing other sport but just loved hockey.” The Hampshire medalist was born in Southampton and raised in Odiham – a village which now bursts with pride regarding achievements by Alex and her team.

The captain of the England Women’s Hockey team says she is proud to see how the sport has grown in popularity, especially among women, she said: “When I first started doing this sport there was not the opportunity to be a full-time hockey player. But now I can say to the young girls they can do this sport full-time if they have that desire.” The surge in hockey came after the London 2012 Olympics, where Alex was awarded with a bronze medal, and, most recently, with Rio 2016 where the women’s team were victorious with gold. The number of girls playing the sport has doubled over the 5-year period. Speaking on her achievement, Alex said: “Without question winning gold was a special moment of my career. But to win bronze on my homeland was just fantastic.

It gives youngsters an opportunity to express themselves and this means so much. The sport also builds up your ability to communicate with different people and through the academy we encourage this.”

Royal recognition at Buckingham Palace in 2017 saw Alex awarded an MBE by Prince William. She said: “The whole team were held in a waiting area and I felt so nervous. All I kept saying to myself was do not faint. It was such a special experience. I am so grateful for this recognition and thank everyone who has supported me.” Speaking of Hampshire, Alex says: “I was so fortunate to live in the county. I used to spend hours at my local park. The village in which I lived was a great community and when I come home the village put on a party. It is so lovely to be valued. I have many fond memories.” Alex is now based with Great Britain Hockey at Buckinghamshire. Investec, the specialist bank and asset manager, support women’s hockey from grass roots level through to the national team. For more information visit

A New Year is always an exciting time, it’s like a fresh chapter in our lives. A time to contemplate where we are in the world and think about making positive changes. Take charge of your new chapter by writing your New Year’s resolutions. Need some inspiration? Here’s a few ideas below to get you started:

Eat healthier Food really is fuel for our bodies and we all know the benefits of eating healthier. It has been medically proven that those on restricted diets live longer and suffer fewer age related diseases. Eating a healthier diet, making sensible food choices with a smaller calorie intake will help you lose weight and reduce your chances of developing heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Emma Scott runs NutriLife, a nutrition and lifestyle business with clinics in Petersfield and Alton. Passionate about empowering her clients, Emma recommends making a SMART plan to kick start your new healthier lifestyle.

There are an array of fitness classes in our local area, catering for beginners as well as more advanced fitness levels. George Turner is lead instructor at Innovations Fitness, who offer personal training and fitness sessions.

“The key to making nutritional and activity changes is to make a plan that fits your lifestyle, which means keeping it simple and being realistic. Make each goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed. Taking small steps and meeting short-term goals will move you towards your long-term plan. Whether that be losing weight, getting fitter or improving your sports performance.”

Move more

Nowadays, our lives are very sedentary and this is having a really negative affect on our physical and mental wellbeing. Whatever you chose to do, go for a short walk, join a sports team, take the stairs instead of the lift, all of these will have a positive impact on your health.

“I believe that fitness should be fun and an enjoyable part of your day to day routine. There is no point in trying to get fit in a way that doesn’t inspire you as you are more likely to give up. It’s key to find a class or activity that suits your ability, where you can increase your fitness and your confidence gradually.”

“There is no point in trying to get fit in a way that doesn’t inspire you as you are more likely to give up.” Being inactive increases your chances of being overweight and puts you at a higher risk of depression. So find ways of incorporating movement into your daily routine.

Sleep well

Never underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep! Sleep is essential for our physical and mental health. Experts suggest the average adult needs between six and eight hours sleep a night so this is what you need to aim for.

“Establishing a ritual and keeping the timing the same each night is key, as this helps your body’s natural body clock.” Try to keep regular sleeping hours, ensure your bedroom environment is calm and peaceful and make sure you relax before going to bed. Emma Scott’s Top Tips for a good night’s rest: “Establishing a ritual and keeping the timing the same each night is key, even on weekends, as this helps your body’s natural body clock (circadian rhythm), which has a direct effect on our sleep and energy levels. Avoid stimulants like caffeine after 4pm to wind down, and limit alcohol as it becomes a depressant when consuming too much, due to its sedative effect on the body.” Switch off - smart phones and blue light emitted by digital devices disrupt your body’s internal clock. Switch off 1 hour before bed and try reading a book or magazine instead. It blunts our melatonin levels that rise at night to prepare us for sleep. Hot Bath – warming your body then transferring yourself into a cooler room will drop your core body temperature, to induce sleep naturally. Mug of cocoa - drinking milk which contains an amino acid called tryptophan, will help you to

build the neurotransmitter serotonin, which helps produce the hormone melatonin to induce sleep. Note Pad - write down your thoughts, to do list etc on a note pad by your bed, now forget about them. Think Positive - reflect on your day, focusing on all the positive things that you have achieved, or moments you have enjoyed during the day. Lights Out - a dark room helps elevate melatonin levels, a chemical that helps your natural sleep cycle. If you wake during the night, remember to keep lights low.

Play more Fun and play ends with childhood? Definitely not. As adults, we need to have fun and play to help us relax.

“Reflect on your day, focusing on all the positive moments you have enjoyed during the day.” We live in a fantastic area, full of exciting things to do. Fill your calendar with one exciting event each month. It doesn’t have to be expensive, maybe a trip to a local art gallery, yoga in the sky at the Spinnaker Tower or a tasty dining experience. By booking these events in your diary, there is always something to look forward to.

So whatever resolutions you decide to write this year, make 2018 the best yet. Enjoy the little things, spend time in nature, read more, stop procrastinating and enjoy life to the fullest.

Introducing MUM & DAD’S KITCHEN…

Business is booming for a local pastry and cake company settled in the heart of Southsea. Jane and Dave Endean never anticipated the impressive success with Mum and Dad’s Kitchen. And now they are providing delicious homely pies enjoyed by thousands of people across the county – all gluten free too! The story began at the back of a convenience store where Jane’s late mother, who provided a recipe for a delicious chocolate cake, inspired her daughter to bake it herself. The cake was made for fun and in memory of the baker and was an instant hit with customers. An impressive 15,000 cakes were purchased from the shop in the first year. It was from this year of success the company was birthed. “My husband was a police officer and I was a nurse. When we sold so many cakes we realised this really could lead to something so invested our

efforts in to launching a business full time. Never did we think we would be where we are today with regular orders.” The couple lived in Buckinghamshire and moved to Worcester where the company was established. Moving to Southsea was an easy decision as their love for the sea meant there was no turning back. They now operate a gluten free kitchen from their home and partner with local businesses ultimately offering something exceptional.

“As an independent business we benefit from other small companies and they gain income from our custom.” Jane said: “All of our meat comes from Farmer’s Choice in Fareham. Many of our ingredients are also locally sourced. I think it is important to promote local business. As an independent business we benefit from other small companies and they gain income from our custom. It works both ways, so this is important.”

“Deciding to be gluten free was not a risk as we were producing something flavoursome and already enjoyed by so many people. We offer sausage rolls, pasties and other pastries which are enjoyed by the growing number of customers we have. Our biggest sale is the pies.” Speaking on the development of the business Jane says they are comfortable with the level of work they receive currently. Although, they would be open to the idea of expanding, offering the excellence to a greater number. At least 1,000 pies are leaving the kitchen on a weekly basis. The team-of-two now provide for Pie and Vinyl on Castle Road in Southsea, Boathouse No 7 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Green’s Café beside Canoe Lake in Portsmouth and Piecaramba in Winchester. Call: 02392 293890 or 0777 333 0906

The gluten and lactose free label carried by these pastry makers was initiated from a challenge. Jane said: “Someone asked whether we could make something free from gluten and lactose and the result was really positive. Therefore, we decided to operate a gluten free kitchen and all our products are enjoyed by a greater number of people. Heart touching songs secure success for Hampshire country stars Ward Thomas wherever they go. “We have different voices that suit different sorts of songs,” Catherine says. “We call Lizzy the trumpet and me the French horn.”

Hampshire’s home grown country crossover music stars Ward Thomas have enjoyed a phenomenal rise to fame in just a few short years. From their successful British Country Music Award winning 2014 debut album ‘From Where We Stand’, begun for fun when they were still at school and released as an experiment on their own label, when the twin sisters were barely out of their teens. To their acclaimed second album ‘Cartwheels’ entering the UK album charts at No. 1 in September 2016 and also gaining number one slots in the iTunes Country Chart and OCC Country Music Chart. Sisters Lizzy and Catherine, now in their early twenties, have completed their own headline 22 date sell-out UK tour. Also playing Glastonbury, Latitude and Cornbury, amongst other high profile festivals, as well as playing London’s O2 Arena and supporting Tom Petty at London’s Hyde Park. So where did it all begin? Growing up on a farm not far from Petersfield, their grandmother’s taste in country music was to be a primary influence, as they listened to the Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood and other country stars as well as being influenced by Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles

and KT Tunstall. Lizzy and Catherine developed their beautifully blending vocals in their school choir, attending Alton Convent School. They started out by playing the regional music circuit with gigs in their local pub, The White Horse otherwise known as The Pub With No Name, then onto music festivals such as Meonfest and venues including Southampton’s Mo Club.

“Growing up on a farm not far from Petersfield, their grandmother’s taste in country music was to be a primary influence.” These days they are working with legendary country music guitarist and 20 times Grammy Award winning Vince Gill, known as the Eric Clapton of country music, and being championed by Bob Harris on Radio 2. ‘Cartwheels’ has been produced largely by Martin Terefe, who produces KT Tunstall and Jason Mraz, with three tracks produced by Jimmy Hogarth who was producer for Amy Winehouse. The Ward Thomas sisters are being seen as two major talents, who write as well as they sing, their trademark harmonies earning them new fans

The title track ‘Cartwheels’ was the first song they wrote for the album and inspired what was to come. “It established our new sound”, says Lizzy. “Lyrically it was much more grown up than anything on our debut album.” The track tells the sad tale of someone who refuses to accept that a relationship is over and Catherine commented: “All of our lyrics are personal, but Cartwheels was the most brutally honest we’d ever been. No one wants to admit they’re that needy, that they’re prepared to do anything to save a relationship they know deep down is broken. Being able to share those emotions with an audience is incredibly powerful.” One of their most recent projects has been to perform on the new Roy Orbison album ‘A Love So Beautiful’, with their beguiling harmonies blending with Roy Orbison’s distinctive vocals on the track ‘I Drove All Night’, with all of the tracks accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The late Roy Orbison recorded the original vocals for this track before the Ward Thomas sisters were born. But with modern technology the Roy Orbison In Dreams Hologram UK Tour will begin in 2018, yet another interesting project for Lizzy and Catherine to add to their long list of successes. Ward Thomas haven’t just developed as a duo, but as individual singers, musicians and heart touching song writers, who are set for continued success. Listen to Ward Thomas featured on the new Roy Orbison album:

Discover some of Hampshire’s

hidden gems

Travelling along the A272 from West Meon to Winchester, it is easy to think that the only landmarks as you pass through Bramdean and Hinton Ampner are the two popular public houses - The Fox Inn and The Hinton Ampner Arms, and the magnificent National Trust property Hinton Ampner House and Gardens. But if you are prepared to turn off the main road and take the roads less travelled, you will find a number of hidden gems. The first turning not to miss is the one to Brockwood where you will find not one, but four gems with the first two being arts related. Granary Creative Arts, located in an ancient granary is full of history and is an atmospheric setting for exhibitions, workshops, gigs, small

theatre, talks, youth arts and even laughter yoga! “We see ourselves as a growing creative collective,” commented Kezia Hoffman, the Winchester based artist and tutor, who founded the project with help from crowd funding in April 2016. Kezia invited local artists and artisans to showcase their skills and to set up workshops. With a passion for keeping alive heritage skills, she combined her experience of working in community arts to create a venue that is now a successful creative community space. Step across the narrow lane from the Granary and you will find another highly creative space occupied by the Wessex Sculptors, also set in a traditional building - a large black barn. This is the home studio for thirty talented sculptors from across Hampshire, and where they run workshops for those interested in the art form, as well as being part of the Hampshire Artist’s Open Studios every August. Brockwood is also home to The Brockwood Park School, an international co-educational boarding school providing personalised holistic education for 14 - 19 year olds, inspired by the teachings of philosopher and writer J. Krishnamurti. The school, set in beautiful parkland, is next door to The Krishnamurti Centre that offers weekend or study retreats in a peaceful setting.

A little further along the main road in the centre of Bramdean, you will find another turning to the 12th century church of St. Simon and St. Jude.

“THE RENOWNED NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A WINTER WALK WHERE YOU CAN DISCOVER AN ANCIENT TREE TRAIL THROUGH THE WOODLAND.” This Grade II* listed building is worth discovering before you head off to Hinton Ampner House and Gardens. This renowned National Trust property is the perfect place for a winter walk where you can discover an Ancient Tree Trail through the estate and woodland, as well as the breathtaking views across to the South Downs. Imaginatively designed formal gardens surround the elegant manor house, which has recently re-opened its first floor after an extensive three year restoration project repairing the devastating damage caused by the February 2014 storms. Although it maybe winter, there is still so much to do and to discover in this beautiful corner of Hampshire countryside!

Western Canada is an outdoor lover’s paradise and a holiday destination made in heaven. A trip to Western Canada will offer you a world of diverse contrasts – spectacular coastlines and imposing white capped peaks, deep blue lakes, peace and tranquillity, and the chance to spot amazing wildlife. On arrival in this stunning destination, visitors will be greeted by astounding views at every turn. And if they’re feeling the need for some adventure, the opportunities are endless. Where better to start than the province of British Colombia and the beautiful city of Vancouver? Surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the city has a fantastic selection of attractions, restaurants, nightlife and shopping. A few days exploring Vancouver will provide plenty of time to discover its charms; head to the historic waterfront and Stanley Park, where totem poles made by the first nation people of Canada are on display.

Set out early to discover local sights including the Capilano Suspension Bridge – stretching 450 feet across and 230 feet above the Capilano River, this is not an exercise for the faint hearted! A self-drive or coach tour is the perfect way to travel around the region, and the scenery visitors will encounter on their travels is breathtaking. Two hours north of Vancouver sits the town of Whistler, home to one of the largest ski resorts in North America. Enjoy a spot of shopping;

Whistler boasts a large number of shops selling everything from jewellery and artwork to sports gear and souvenirs. The dining options are plentiful too; visitors will find a variety of pubs, bars and restaurants. Equally worthy of a visit is Clearwater, on the edge of Wells Gray National Park and the gateway to Mount Washington – one of the highest peaks in the Rockies. In the heart of Western Canada is the province of Alberta,

“Western Canada is the perfect place for people who love the great outdoors – if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is for you.” undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places one Earth. Stretching along Alberta’s western border, the Canadian Rockies contain a network of protected national parks that have collectively been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jasper National Park is the largest of the mountain parks and a popular destination for visitors, who fall in love with its landscape. For the best views of Jasper, ride the Skytram, which takes people to the top of Whistler’s Mountain – up 7,472 feet. The view of the mountain ranges is incredible and an experience people will never forget. Jasper itself is an authentic old rail town surrounded by glorious views; it is also one of the stopping stations for the famous Rocky Mountaineer train. Banff National Park is joined to Jasper National Park and boasts the spectacular Icefields Parkway running through both. This is a land of dramatic high mountains, glaciers and untamed scenery. No trip to Western Canada would be complete without a stop at Lake Louise – it has to be seen to be believed. Well known for its chateau which sites on the lakeside, the deep green lake and snow-capped peaks is like a scene from a fairy tale. Western Canada is the perfect place for people who love the great outdoors – if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is for you.

Highclere Castle Highclere Castle has been home to the Carnarvon family since 1679. Built on an ancient site, the original house was recorded in the Domesday Book. The present day Castle was designed in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, the architect also responsible for the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. The Castle’s history also includes a fascinating connection with ancient Egypt, as the 5th Earl, with Howard Carter, discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 and many of his artefacts are displayed in the Egyptian Exhibition which is housed in what were the Castle kitchens. More recently, of course, it was the location of the world famous “Downton Abbey” series. The Castle and its surrounding gardens are open to visitors during the summer months.

She is also working to recreate the children’s nursery rooms on the top floor.

The Saloon is physically and socially the heart of the house. It was designed for the 4th Earl by Thomas Allom in a gothic style with rich decoration and completed in the 1860s. The remarkable wall coverings are made of leather. They were brought back from Cordoba, Spain by the 3rd Earl and date from 1631.

The below stairs scenes for “Downton Abbey” were filmed on a purpose built set at Ealing Studios. The set team recreated the lower flight of staff stairs at Ealing, so that the actors could be seen as if arriving from the Castle.

The State Dining Room is dominated by Van Dyck’s great equestrian portrait of Charles I. Either side are portraits of Carnarvon ancestors who took part in the civil war in England in the 1640s. The double Library was in its heyday during the late Victorian period. The 4th Earl was an active Tory in Parliament and a member of Disraeli’s Cabinet. It was here that he met with Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier to draft the first Constitution of Canada. Visitors to the Castle are able to look round some of the 12 principal bedrooms off the first floor gallery of the Castle. There are a further 40 to 50 bedrooms on the second and third floors, many of which are in the process of being refurbished by Lady Carnarvon, using prints and drawings from the archives.

“The State Dining Room is dominated by Van Dyck’s great equestrian portrait of Charles I. ”

CASTLE GARDENS To the south east of the Castle lies the Monks’ Garden – its name derived from the Bishops of Winchester who owned the Estate for 800 years before the Carnarvon family. Records in 1218 list 61 fruit trees which were replanted in 1364. Over the years it has been planted to become a more decorative garden, where climbing roses make a fine show in June above a border with penstemons, agapanthus and geranium. Lavender grows under the walls whilst a glass house is filled with Tea Roses for cutting as well as peaches and nectarines. Highclere Castle, Highclere Park, Newbury RG20 9RN.
