Moda Rosa - Hayley Menzies Ruffle Dress £545.00. 35 West Street, Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 9AB

style EDIT for the Festivities By Georgia Reed

Join Beautiful South & celebrate in style this season Whether you are celebrating with family, friends or colleagues, we are about to hit the packed season for parties and festivities. Christmas celebrations are the perfect excuse to splash out on new outfits, accessories and beauty treatments - to guarantee you feel your very best.

Rixo - Tyra, Long Sleeve Sequin Dress £385.00.

Beautiful South have shared our top tips on how to feel fashion ready for the weeks of festivities. For the office party, or even Christmas day, why not seek out a show-stopping dress? At this time of year, there is no meaning of ‘too much’. From red ruffles and feathered embellishments, right through to rainbow sequins and shoulder pads, no fashion is off-limits. At Beautiful South we have our eyes on a couple of jaw-dropping styles this season.

Anthropologie - Reine Ruffled Mini Dress £120.00

2019’s party season will welcome a whole host of sparkle and texture. Inspired by recent runway trends, this year, sequin styles are experimenting with new silhouettes and shapes. This is the best time of year for experimenting with something new and having fun with your outfits. So, why not try a sparkling dress in a new style, such as fringing or draping? Reiss - Embellished Silver Clutch £125.00. John Lewis Westquay, Southampton SO15 5QA

Or, if you are feeling bold, cult fashion-favourite, Rixo, have a number of unique sequin dresses in their latest collection that can take your outfit up a notch.

River Island - Dark Purple Belted Trench Coat £85.00. Churchill Way E, Basingstoke RG21 7BF

From red ruffles and feathered embellishments, right through to rainbow sequins and shoulder pads, no fashion is off-limits.

Velvet and Rose - Suncoo Robe Capucine Dress Fuchsia £89.00. 1 London House, Chapel Street, Petersfield, Hampshire, GU32 3DR

Ruffled hems have been around for a while now, but come winter 2019 - one frill will simply not do. This year, expect to see layers upon layers of eye-catching ruffles along sleeves, hems and collars. These fabulous frocks are the new statement-making solution for women who want to wow with ‘that dress’, and it works for all ages. You can shop this look at the Moda Rosa fashion boutique on Alresford High Street. They feature a fantastic selection of outfits, including designer, to choose from.

As winter wraps around us and we head out for the evening, don’t forget to stay warm. As a key stable of the colder months, you simply cannot go wrong with a statement coat. This season, why not invest in an item that will bring you comfort and style? Long, leather trench coats are a ‘must-have’ this winter and were showcased down designer runways this AW19. Stick to a classy and sleek black colour, or try something new with a khaki or deep-maroon - to really impress. With many options of leather trench coats around, it is best to have a research on what works best for you. And lastly, it is time to think about your accessories. Top off your look with an eye-catching clutch, from chunky jewels to colourful tassels, the jazzier, the better. Our current favourite is the star embellished clutch bag from Monsoon.

Monsoon - Sophie Star Embellished Clutch Bag £30.00. 71-72 East St, Chichester PO19 1HL

Once your outfits have been sorted, the true countdown can begin. Roll on the mince pies, present wrapping, Christmas carols and of course, the mulled wine!

Shop the look this season…

The secrets of

Bone Broth The colder months have set in, and getting our required nutrients, minerals and infusions through fresh vegetables and fruit that the summer months offer gets harder.

Our top picks to summarise the benefits that bone broth can have on your body: broth is rich in minerals that help 1 Bone strengthen your bones. It also contains many other healthy nutrients, including vitamins, amino acids and essential fatty acids.

Dating back to prehistoric times, the health benefits of bone broth - nutritious stock commonly used in soups has regained major popularity in recent years.

2 The gelatine in bone broth supports healthy

A cup of bone broth a day can only be sure to provide excellent benefits.

The amino acids in bone broth can help fight inflammation. Because of this, eating it may help protect against disease.

The gelatine in bone broth has been shown to promote feelings of fullness. Consuming it regularly may reduce calorie intake and lead to weight loss over time.

Glycine has been shown to promote sleep. Taking it before bed may improve quality of sleep, mental function and memory.

Bone broth is easily made at home, from simmering and boiling down the bones from just about any animal that we use in regular cooking, such as pork, beef, chicken or lamb, in a giant pot accompanied by water, a small amount of apple cider vinegar and salt & pepper for flavour. If you aren’t up for making it yourself, there are plentiful stores and regular supermarkets selling highquality alternatives.

digestion. It may be beneficial for individuals with leaky gut or other inflammatory bowel diseases.

12 | Beautiful South | November/December 2019 | HEALTH & BEAUTY

As with any health tip, the benefits of bone broth should be seen as an addition to a balanced diet and lifestyle and not a full alternative to regular consumption of nutrients. What is known is that even as much as a cup of bone broth a day (which can be a great winter alternative to a cup of tea or coffee before or after lunch or dinner) can only be sure to provide excellent benefits.

ON YOUR SMILE Our teeth are an essential factor in our face that shows wellbeing, health and good self-care. As we get older, our teeth through wear and tear become more vulnerable and our routine around maintaining their strength, colour and aesthetics become more important. Aside from regular trips to the dentist – it is always recommended at minimum once and ideally twice per year for a check-up and meeting with the hygienist – brushing twice a day, regular flossing and mouth wash, advances in dental technology mean that there are now a plethora of treatments on the market open to us. Many of these treatments deliver incredible results once only limited to highly expensive and invasive cosmetic intervention. So, looking to brush up on your smile? Here are our top 3 tips and treatments.

INVESTING IN A BETTER TOOTHBRUSH Simple but highly effective. Investing in an excellent brush, ideally electronic, has huge long-term benefits, and the cost per use is next to nothing. Electric toothbrush bristles vibrate or rotate to help you remove plaque buildup from your teeth and gums. The vibration allows for more micro-movements every time you move your toothbrush across your teeth. TechAdvisor’s recent 2019 round-up of the best includes great options such as the highly-rated Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100, or the Oral-B Pro 2 2000.

WHITENING It’s undeniable that removing stains and yellowing to the teeth to reveal and showcase a brighter, whiter smile has hugely positive implications. Whether it’s selecting a toothpaste with a stronger fluoride level or organising a whitening session with your dentist, it’s highly recommended. There are typically two forms of whitening treatment – at home, and in the chair. Take-home involves creating a mould and dental trays of your mouth, with your registered dentist preparing an appropriate strength of bleach that gradually over 2-3 weeks lift stains from the tooth enamel. It is recommended during this time you use a sensitivity toothpaste to avoid any heightened feeling.

OUR TEETH BECOME MORE VULNERABLE AND OUR ROUTINE AROUND MAINTAINING THEIR STRENGTH, COLOUR AND AESTHETIC BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT. In the chair usually present a stronger and more invasive option for those wanting immediate and high impact results. Zoom Whitening is a popular treatment, whereby UV light is applied over dental bleach bringing your teeth upwards to 5-6 shades lighter in one session. Looking for a much less invasive alternative? Charcoal toothpaste has been talked about a lot lately, and while not having quite as strong effects as any of the previously discussed, it does carry great whitening benefits at an affordable cost.

COMPOSITE BONDING Porcelain veneers are up there with the most invasive treatment when it comes to cosmetic dental with the ability to totally restyle, contour and change the overall appearance of your teeth. While a great option for some, this treatment is irreversible and a big investment. Dental bonding is a procedure in which a toothcoloured resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve the person’s smile. This is an excellent alternative and perhaps road-test for those seeking full veneers in the future. Dental bonding takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth to complete and can be undertaken often immediately after a consultation. This is a rather incredible, cost-effective and fast option for those wanting to improve corrections with the teeth and when carried out alongside a whitening treatment, the overall effects can be hugely satisfying. As with any treatment, consultation with a registered professional and also undertaking your own research is essential. Ask questions, ask to see previous case studies and make a well-rounded decision before embarking on your dental improvement journey!

We are a very well-established, family-friendly dental practice situated in the centre of Havant. We undertake all aspects of modern dentistry and have a busy Denplan, Private and NHS list.

Making Your Home With

The latest interior design trend is all about the drama of deep and dark colours. From repainting rooms to sourcing new furnishings, the Beautiful South Magazine can shed some light on how to celebrate and adopt this style into your living space… Are you looking to revamp your home? Don’t be afraid of rich and dark hues such as smoky greys,

teals, coffee browns and bottle-greens. These tones can help bring relaxation, comfort and depth into your home, allowing your personality and flair to shine through. But how? Refitting the entire kitchen isn’t the only way to completely transform the heart of your home. If you are looking to revamp your kitchen but don’t have the ability to rip out and start from fresh, then existing wood kitchen doors can be repainted and teamed with new handles and taps. Glossy white kitchens - be gone! The latest style

16 | Beautiful South | November/December 2019 | INTERIORS

is for neutral and dark walls, paired with deep coloured cabinets in navy and greens. Farrow and Ball’s Hague Blue and Green Smoke paint shades can help you create this captivating look. Brass and copper finishings work well against these darker shades, adding that extra touch to your cooking space. Together they create a beautiful backdrop for daily life in the kitchen - setting the scene for your morning cup of coffee and afterdinner drinks.

Rather than forcing brightness into the space, use the absence of light to your advantage and drown your walls with ink blues or earthy tones. Darkly painted walls are also a delightful remedy for your rooms that don’t receive much natural light. Whether that is due to a north-facing angle or a lack of windows, embrace the sombre and relaxing feeling of a naturally low-lit room. Rather than forcing brightness into the space, use the absence of light to your advantage and drown your walls with ink blues or earthy tones. Walnut wood floors or shelving units team well in these spaces, creating a classical and timeless look.

Be sure to explore Rebecca Barnes Designs in Petersfield for some serious interiors inspiration. To avoid a room looking dreary, liven it up with plants and a contrasting pop of bold colour in lemon yellow or fuschia pink. Or, perhaps you are searching for some darker, fresh furnishings to breath new life into your home? Well, look no further than Neptune Interiors’ latest Christmas collection, encompassing both traditions and nostalgic items of which can help transform your living space with the latest sombre-shaded trend. Beautiful South’s particular favourite, is the beautifully textured and comfortable George Sofa in Isla Grouse (£2,315), which will work well in your home as an iconic, standalone piece of furniture. We are already excited for winter evenings curled up in front of the television. If the bold move to the dark side seems daunting, then ease yourself in slowly. Remember that these trends can be adapted to your personal style and home comforts. To edge yourself in, start with exploring and experimenting with smaller items within your house, such as throws, rugs or even your bed linen. Home Sense in Chichester always has a beautiful selection of blankets and bedding to choose from. You never know - adorning your bed in beautiful, deep coloured sheets or covering your floors in a rustic, dark hued rug, may be the simple revamp you were searching for. Hampshire’s Food Banks By Lily Lloyd

There are currently 14 million people living in poverty in the UK, including 4.5 million children. That's 14 million people who suffer from lack of means necessary to meet their basic human needs, including food for themselves and their family – shocking, right? To help combat those staggering figures, food banks across the UK work round the clock to help relieve the times of hard struggle for those who need it. As we welcome the months of November and December, there is one large event on everyone's mind; Christmas.

“Christmas is a time of giving, spreading cheer and sharing the love with friends and family.” While many of us will be opening our advent calendars each morning as we count down to the big day, there are still 14 million UK residents that are faced with the possibility of going hungry this Christmas. Amazing charities like The Trussell Trust and Meon Valley Food Bank are situated throughout Hampshire to help our neighbours in crisis. Thousands of food banks can be found across the UK in locations such as supermarkets, churches, schools, businesses and even individual homes! Each food bank collects monetary donations and

non-perishable, in-date food. These food banks are run by more than 40,000 volunteers and workers across the UK, who selflessly donate their time and goodwill to sort through the food, check it's in-date and then store it; ready for it to be given to people who are referred to a food bank in crisis. Food banks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, teachers, health visitors and social workers to identify people in crisis and give them a voucher to access emergency food from their local bank. But charities like The Trussell Trust do not stop there; they recognise that ending hunger is more than just supplying food. That's why they encourage volunteers to provide compassionate, practical support to people in crisis so that they are less likely to need a food bank in the future. The Trussell Trust also work with nutritionists to develop a food parcel that contains sufficient nutrition for a minimum of three days of healthy, balanced meals for individuals and families. A typical package includes items such as cereal, soup, pasta, rice, tinned goods, UHT milk, tea, coffee and more. Many food banks also provide essential non-food items such as toiletries and hygiene products. Each year, as we draw closer to the 25th December, we will undoubtedly see a surge in large food collections to help support those throughout the winter months. This year, Beautiful South would like to urge those who can to help as much as possible.

Embracing Nature to Change the World from the Inside

n 2003 Sarah Brooks and Susi Lennox, two long-standing friends, had both reached a point in their lives where they wanted to do something new, daring and worthwhile. Today their awardwinning Hampshire based company The Yes Yes Company Limited sells their range of certified organic intimacy products in 95 countries worldwide. These two exceptional and determined women had such a strong belief in their vision that they sold their homes to fund their business. With their mission statement ‘To Change the World from the Inside’, they took their ethical business values and created life-enhancing products aimed at the health, wellbeing and pleasure sectors. Susi Lennox mentions one of the main motivations for creating their business and range of products and commented:

After three years of research and development, it was clear that they had brought pioneering products to a receptive market, starting with online sales in the UK, acquiring international customers and distributors across the globe.

Susi sums up the extraordinary positive feedback that they get from those who have discovered their life-changing products and said: “We absolutely know that the products we have created have been transformative – our customers and their partners tell us constantly how we have saved their sanity, their marriage, their comfort, their sexual survivorship, their intimate pleasure, their ability to heal from hurts, emotional and physical, and we are humbled and inspired by their celebration of all that has been restored through YES. Some of the profoundly moving stories that customers share are deeply disclosing – describing how life-changing YES has been for them, and reduce us to tears.”

Susi and Sarah continue to be delighted with the feedback from customers via the many positive testimonials - known as their YEStimonials, that they receive. Another area of achievement that friends and business partners are particularly proud of is the relationship they have forged with the NHS, with two of their products now available on prescription.

Sarah and Susi continue to develop new products to add to their range of organic lubricants including two intimate washes, YES CLEANSE unfragranced and Rose that is matched to vaginal/vulval pH with soothing calendula and Aloe vera. Plus a recent launch of an anal lubricant YES BUT and other exciting products in the pipeline.

“In the wake of Viagra, we realised the need for intimacy products that would be suitable for older women, and having both worked as consultants in the pharmacovigilance arena; we were all too aware of the prevalence of side effects. We decided to create a business that reflected our values and develop side-effect free and pioneering intimate care products, which we wanted to be The Ultimate for the Intimate.”

Sarah is very involved in the product development side of the business and commented: “The organic nature of YES personal lubricants and Vaginal Moisturisers reassures both Health Care Professionals and patients/clients of safe and side-effect free application, and we now have YES being recommended by Gynaecologists, Breast Care Nurses, GPs, Menopause Specialists, Complementary Therapists and many Psychosexual and Relationship Therapists. These HCPs are reporting effective relief from a wide range of conditions, especially those relating to sudden onset menopause and vaginal atrophy following cancer treatment.”

Having developed a wide range of products that enhance women’s wellbeing - it was interesting to learn more about what Susi and Sarah do to help enhance their own wellbeing. Susi came up with a long list of self-nurturing ideas that we can all learn from and share.

We are very proud of being the first company to have Certified Organic products made available for prescription by the NHS,” continued Susi.

“Guarding against stress, spending time in nature, being very discerning about nutrition and the products we use, creating harmonious environments to live and work in, having rich social communion, laughing a lot, drinking decent coffee (obviously organic coffee and all things organic where possible) and fabulous wine, conscious breathing, indulging in the soul food of music, galleries, festivals, literature and having sumptuous beds for deep dreamful, restorative sleep.”

2. A Journey to

hat’s the difference between Cognac and Brandy? Akin to champagne and sparkling wine – it’s all about geography. In purest form, Cognac is Brandy, specifically created in the Cognac region of South West France. Brandy meanwhile, can come from anywhere in the world. Aside from where it is from, there are a few other rules that make Cognac the unique French spirit that it is. Cognac is created from a blend of grapes that include the Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard varietals. A minimum of 90% of the brandy must be comprised of those grapes, while an additional 10% can be made of other kinds.

Remy Martin XO

Martell Blue Swift

Hennessy Paradis Imperial

Step it up a notch with what can be considered an iconic drop in the Cognac world. Rémy Martin XO Excellence is composed of EauxDe-Vie coming exclusively from the most sought- after vineyards of Cognac: Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne. Such Eaux-DeVie offers an exceptional ageing potential and are known as Cognac Fine Champagne. A myriad of floral, fruity and spicy aromas velvet texture, opulent density, giving a superior mellow sensation.

A curious spirit from the House of Martell. Blue Swift starts with a base of their VSOP Cognac, but it’s then finished in Kentucky bourbon barrels. The result is rich and creamy, with outstanding vanilla and spiced plum notes. Tasting notes of vanilla ice cream, clove, plum pudding, maple syrup, praline and fried banana.

Ready to break the bank and celebrate a milestone in style? Hennessy Paradis Imperial is a contemporary creation by Yann Fillioux, the 7th generation Master Blender. This rare Cognac is the apogee of Hennessy’s art of selection. Comprised of Eaux-De-Vie aged between 30 and 130 years old, with a higher proportion of Eaux-De-Vie from their 19th-century reserves than the Hennessy Paradis gives it a richer, more powerful style. Exceptional at every drop.

Once the liquid is created, it is then distilled in copper pots and aged for a minimum of two years within oak barrels – similar to whisky. The barrels themselves must be made from French oak sourced from specific regions. As this process is underway, a special grading system designed for Cognac comes into play...

We’ve rounded up our best picks – from getting started on your Cognac journey, through to pleasing even the most expert connoisseurs!

With such a pedigree, Ashling Park is our choice for putting the sparkle into this Christmas season, so log on to and buy online or find an outlet near you.

Now that autumn’s here and the nights are drawing in; our thoughts are turning towards Christmas - the presents and the entertaining… How about this for an all-round easy win? Ashling Park English sparkling wine. We did what the label said: we popped the cork and were bewitched by the aroma of ripe stone fruit and white flowers. We poured a glass and were beguiled by its lovely straw-coloured gold and the fine bubbles rising briskly to the top. We took a sip and were spellbound by the perfect balance of the intensity of fruit and the chalky acidity. It is, indeed, “enchantment in a glass” which makes it the perfect and most welcome gift, and guarantees to add sparkle to every Christmas party.

With such a pedigree, Ashling Park is our choice for putting the sparkle into this Christmas season, Ashling Park Estate is owned and run by the Gardner family at West Ashling, just outside Chichester. It’s a magic spot between the South Downs and the Isle of Wight and the perfect

location for a vineyard. With 33 acres under vine over two sites, they’ve recently harvested 80 tons of grapes by hand in the proper, time-honoured way, to ensure that only the very best of their crop goes into their delicious wine. Ashling Park is an open secret within the wine industry. It’s already won three major awards. At the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards (the wine industry’s Oscars), it came away with a coveted gold. To put this into perspective, some 17,000 wines were blind-tasted, and only 330 were awarded gold - as well as winning gold from Wine GB and silver at the Sommelier Awards. And It’s been picked by Susie Atkins and Jamie Goode, the well respected wine journalists, and chosen by Rose Murray Brown, one of only 390 Masters of Wine worldwide, and her Masterclass as outstanding favourite in a line-up of sparkling wines from not just the UK but around the world. With all this going for it, it comes as no surprise to hear that Ashling Park is already stocked at Cliveden House (Meghan Markle’s pre-wedding hotel), five-starred Chewton Glen in the New Forest, and by our very own Goodwood Estate. They obviously all know a good wine when they taste it.

And by the way, we’ve heard on the grapevine (sorry… we just couldn’t resist that) that the Gardner family are on a mission to bring a sense of place to their label. Work has just started on five luxury lodges for overnight stays, and a grand tasting room designed for them by William Hardie of TV’s Amazing Spaces fame. They’ll be open for vineyard tours and wine tastings by next summer. We’ll certainly be booking a tasting the moment they are up and running! We poured a glass and were beguiled by its lovely straw-coloured gold and the fine bubbles rising briskly to the top.

Fish dishes W

e spend our whole year waiting for the Christmas period. December is filled with Sundays dedicated to roast dinners, long naps and classic movies. But for some of us, the thought of seeing another turkey roast dinner can sometimes fill us with dread. To avoid this, we at Beautiful South, have pulled together some ‘less traditional’ winter-inspired fish dishes for you to try. Fish? Yes, that’s right! Having a fish-based winter dish may be completely unheard of for some, but for many people across Europe, fish is another staple dish on the Christmas menu. Similar to a family sharing a turkey or nut roast on Christmas day, families and friends across Europe share a whole fish of their choice; such as turbot, brill, seabass or monkfish on Christmas Eve.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE GORGEOUS WINTER WARMER FISH DISHES WE HAVE SELECTED, AND TRY THEM FOR YOURSELF. As with most things at Christmas, this tradition stems from religion, restoring the Roman Catholic and Orthodox practice of fasting in preparation for the coming of baby Jesus. Although a tradition, this meal can vary considerably between countries. For example, Greeks often take part in a 40-day fasting period in which meat is completely off the menu (apart from fish being allowed on the weekends). So before you dismiss the idea of adding fish to your Christmas plans, take a look at these gorgeous winter warmer fish dishes we have selected, and try them for yourself.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •

Panko breadcrumbs 150g Dried cranberries, chopped 120g Sliced almonds, 40g Pine nuts, 40g Flat-leaf parsley, chopped, 15g (save 5g for garnish) Thyme leaves, finely chopped, 30g Zest of 1 lemon and zest of 1 orange Butter 120g, melted 1 fresh salmon (about 1.5kg) 1 lemon, cut into wedges to serve

Baked turbot

• • • • • • • •

1 turbot 1-1.5kg Sea salt and black pepper Olive oil Fresh garlic cloves Chopped shallots & leeks Rosemary Lemon wedge Samphire grass

Serves: 8 Cooks in: 20-25 minutes

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 2. Line a large baking or oven tray with baking paper. 3. In a medium bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs, 100g cranberries, almonds, pine nuts, parsley, thyme and lemon and orange zest. Stir in melted butter and season with salt and pepper. 4. Pat salmon dry with paper towels and remove any remaining pin bones. 5. Place salmon on prepared tray, skin-side-down. Season well with salt and sprinkle crust mixture evenly on top, pressing down gently to adhere. 6. Drizzle over a little more melted butter. 7. Place on a shelf in the middle of the oven, and bake for about 20-25 minutes until crust is golden. 8. Garnish with more the rest of the chopped cranberries and parsley for colour. 9. Serve with boiled baby potatoes, salad and a slice of lemon (to squeeze).

1. Ask your fishmonger to get the turbot oven-ready, scoring around the edge and removing the fins. 2. Fill the bottom of your baking tray with chopped garlic, shallots, leek and rosemary, laying your turbot on top. 3. Drizzle the top side of the fish with olive oil, rubbing sea salt and black pepper across the back. 4. Inset a lemon wedge inside the head of the fish, this will add extra flavour and keep the fish moist. 5. Bake for 20 minutes uncovered (this will enable the skin to crisp up) 6. Round the edge of your fish, sprinkle samphire grass and cook for a further 2 minutes (you will find this at any good fishmongers or forge for your own!)

Following a major £1.3 million refurbishment from its new owners Agincare, Gorseway Manor Care Home on Hayling Island’s Sea Front is open for business.

These relaxing and sociable spaces can also be enjoyed by other members of the Gorseway Park community – the independent leasehold apartments and the Gorseway Nursing Home.

As well as its financial investment, Dorset based care provider Agincare brings with it more than 30 years’ experience of providing high quality yet affordable residential care.

Agincare CEO, Raina Summerson, said:

Gorseway Manor Care Home has 32 lovely en-suite bedrooms, as well as five luxury suites with lounge areas, bedroom and bathroom. The care home also boasts a number of communal rooms, including a TV room and sun lounge. Gorseway Manor is a home-from-home. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their own furniture and pictures. They can even bring their pets in with them. The dining room was originally a stunning ballroom, which has been painstakingly restored to its former glory.

“Gorseway Manor was a key acquisition for Agincare due to its excellent position and our confidence that we could bring it back to being the care home of choice on the Island. “Now after an intensive refurbishment, it’s up to the high standards expected of all Agincare care and nursing homes. We have a fantastic team, facilities and community here.” To find out more about Gorseway Manor Care Home, or to arrange a visit, call 02392 983 738 or visit manor

WHAT DO OUR RESIDENTS THINK ABOUT GORSEWAY PARK? We love Gorseway Park - its beautiful location, excellent facilities, friendly and caring staff and of course, our residents! But we wanted to give you an idea of how our residents find living here. Lea Achilleos is 90 and was the first resident to move into the refurbished Gorseway Manor Care Home. We asked Lea what she thought of her new home: Lea said: “The girls here are wonderful! Not once have they said to me, Oh, you can’t do that, or You can’t have that. I have everything I want. The food is lovely, and plenty. This to me, is the best, best place heaven and paradise. I wish I could go on forever!” Watch Lea’s video at www.agincare. com/gorseway- manor

The famous Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market attracts around 350,000 visitors each year and will run from 21st November - 22nd December. Considered to be one of the best in Europe because of its unique location, the market will have over a hundred ski chalet style shopping outlets selling a vast range of unusual and interesting gifts. A large Ice Skating Rink will form the centre piece of the event, and visitors can also enjoy Christmas Tower Tours of the Cathedral with elevated views of the market and across the city.

setting of Abbey Mill Gardens, just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the shopping area. Winchester’s wide range of restaurants also offers food lovers tastes from across the globe from Japanese, to Thai, Indian, French, Spanish and Italian as well as the best of traditional and modern English cuisine. Another very short walk from the centre will take you to the National Trust’s Winchester City Mill, fed by the crystal clear River Itchen. Then take another short walk past the statue of King Alfred and Winchester’s Guildhall and you are back in the hub of the city, with its street entertainers and colourful markets. As they say in the restaurants

When the facelifted Range Rover Sport arrived in early 2018, this P400e plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant was added to the line-up. It boasts a 13kwh lithium-ion battery large enough to propel it for 31 electric-only miles, which rolls its fuel-economy figure into triple digits and reduces emissions. To identify the Range Rover Sport from the previous version, the 2018 facelift introduced a new grille, front and rear bumpers, a redesigned rear spoiler and slimmer, now LED, headlights. Inside, the updated Range Rover Sport is just as luxurious as ever, with swathes of leather covering every surface and metal trim that’s cool on the eye and tactile to the touch. The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system – with its two 10-inch displays stacked on top of each other – are crystalclear and look great, with the top display taking care of navigation and media, while the bottom screen is used for vehicle and HVAC settings. There have been some compromises in practicality in order to accommodate the battery pack and electric motor. In the standard Sport, there’s up to 780 litre of luggage space, but this is reduced by up to 79 litres in the P400e, while the boot floor is also raised by 46mm. More significantly for families, there’s also no longer the option of the 5+2 seating layout that makes the Sport an occasional sevenseater, because there’s no room to stow the third row in the boot. Just one engine option is offered on the Range Rover Sport P400e, which is a turbocharged 297hp 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor to produce a combined 399hp, hence the P400e name. It’s never short of power and

can accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and keep on going to a top speed of 137mph. However, due to the size of the batteries, the P400e does take a while to charge: 7.5 hours if plugged in at home using a standard domestic outlet, or three hours using a faster public charger or dedicated wall box. Over a conventionally-powered Range Rover Sport, the P400e PHEV feels very different to drive, especially in town. Here, electric power allows the Sport to accelerate briskly from a standstill with little fuss or drama – all attributes that suit its character. While the Range Rover Sport hasn’t been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, safety should be less of a worry. Both the full-on Range Rover and the Range Rover Velar managed a five-star result, so there’s little reason to think the Sport would do worse. Depending on its specification, the plug-in hybrid P400e will cost more to lease than a Range Rover Sport fitted with a V6 diesel engine. However, for company-car drivers wanting the potential tax savings, or London-dwellers who regularly drive into the Congestion Charge zone, the financial benefits are attractive. By Wayne Gorrett

Ajman & Ras Al Khaimah Beyond headline-grabbing Dubai, this dazzling duo of Emirates are worthy contenders for a beach break or desert adventure and offer an authentic taste of this beautiful country.

Escape to...

For most people, a visit to the United Arab Emirates means Dubai or maybe Abu Dhabi. However, if you would rather escape the bling for a more authentic Arabian experience then neighbouring Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah tick all the boxes. Pocket-sized Ajman is the smallest, and currently least touristy, of the seven Emirates and just 45 minutes drive from Dubai. Its coastline is rimmed with luxury hotels, each with their own private stretch of uncrowded white sands.

All manner of watersports can be enjoyed; while the nearby desert and mountains are ideal for safaris and nature trails. If you can drag yourself away from your beachside lounger, watersports are plentiful, with stand up paddleboards, windsurfing, jet skiing and banana boat rides all on offer. The bustling waterfront promenade, known as the Corniche, is a popular place to stroll or stop for a bite to eat at one of the numerous cafes and restaurants. It’s especially lively at the weekend when events take place, and locals gather for picnics and barbecues. Another great place to wander and dine is Ajman Marina, as well as Marsa Ajman, a palm-lined promenade with a variety of cafes and restaurants. Also worthy of a visit is Al Zorah National Reserve, for a unique opportunity to get out and about with nature. This vibrant ecosystem made up of mangroves, turquoise lagoons and sandy beaches are home to nearly 60 species of bird including pink flamingo, egret and heron. The best way to explore the mangroves is by kayak, and the calm waters and network of channels make it suitable even for novice paddlers.

Al Zorah is where you’ll also find the stunning Al Zorah Golf Club, while families will love Funtastico with its exhilarating variety of rides, attractions and games or, enjoy Ajman Pearl to learn about the pearling industry in the region.

exchange brought about by trade routes. Notable sights include the 16th-century Dhayah Fort, the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, Mohammed Bin Salim Mosque and the abandoned fishing village of Jazirat Al Hamra.

Picturesque Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost Emirate, has swathes of sun-kissed beaches bordering the Arabian Gulf. Here, all manner of watersports can be enjoyed; local museums and forts give a glimpse of cultural life, while the nearby desert and mountains are ideal for safaris, nature trails and 4x4 dune bashing.

Its coastline is rimmed with luxury hotels, each with their own private stretch of uncrowded white sands, along with incredible wildlife.

Ras Al Khaimah’s relatively undiscovered beaches are sublime stretches of sun-kissed sands bordering the lovely warm waters of the Arabian Gulf. The private beaches belonging to the resort hotels are particularly hard to beat, and many boast natural lagoons with activities such as parasailing, banana boat rides, jet-skiing, along with snorkelling and diving.

If the lure of Dubai’s world-class malls and attractions prove too difficult to ignore, shuttle buses and excursions operate regularly from Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, giving the best of both worlds.

Local museums and forts provide visitors with a glimpse of the Emirate’s cultural life, history and heritage, which is rooted in a long tradition of literary work, camel races, falconry, traditional artwork, fishing, pearl farming and the cultural

ocally sourced high-quality ingredients are vital to the success of Mud Foods, the artisan multi award winning pie company based in Midhurst; established in 2009 by Chief Pie Maker, Christian Barrington. In 2006 Christian turned his back on his career as a financial advisor to follow his passion for cooking and decided to open an organic café in Chichester. The café was a huge success, serving organic, delicious, freshly prepared food. However, it was soon affected by the change in people’s buying habits. As a result, Christian started to make pies to sell at the local Chichester Farmers’ Market while also using this as an opportunity to promote the café. During Christian’s childhood, his grandmother would make her signature dish of steak and kidney pie to bring to family gatherings.

With this in mind, Christian decided to re-create these delicious pies to sell. He knew he wanted to make the pies with the same home-made quality and attention to detail as to his grandmother, while also understanding the importance of using locally sourced, quality ingredients. Christian continued to run the café, but with demand for pies now high at the farmers’ market, he would often work through the night to keep up. Shortly after, they were also being sold at Midhurst, Petworth and Winchester Farmers’ Markets. With the success of the pies now firmly established, the decision was made to close the café and instead, invest in a small industrial unit in Chichester. ‘I would set up and sell out by 10 am. So the next week, I would make even more, but with queues of people wanting to buy my pies, I would sell out by 10.30 am. I couldn’t make enough to keep up’, Christian reflects.

All their pies are made with the finest, locally sourced ingredients to create simple down to earth good food.

To keep up with demand, Christian’s wife Toni helped alongside her midwifery studies. In 2012, Christian and Toni welcomed their first daughter, Emelia. At just six days old, Toni took Emelia to the Farmers’ Markets to visit her very dedicated dad who continued to work round-the-clock to produce his popular pies. Within just six months, the business, now known as Mud Foods, outgrew the unit in Chichester and moved to a larger unit in Midhurst, where it remains today. Christian’s legendary butter-rich pastry is one of the greatest secrets of his success. He says, ‘We get comments all the time from customers about how crisp and delicious our pastry is’. The name Mud Foods was chosen because of the quality of the soil in which crops are grown and the way the animals consume them - ultimately giving Mud Foods its great-tasting ingredients. All their pies are made with the finest, locally sourced ingredients to create simple down to earth good food, and they have won 56 awards in the last five years! Mud Foods now employs 12 members of staff, so Christian no longer has to work through the night. Toni has a career as a local Midwife, and they have a second daughter, Liberty. Mud Foods continue to support local Farmers’ Markets, and more often than not, you will see Christian at a lot of these events. Mud pies varieties include steak and ale, chicken ham and leek, squash spinach, feta and even a vegan pie! They can be bought and enjoyed in many outlets from the British Library, to a farm shop near you. For more information, please visit

Created five years ago in Paul Bowler’s home kitchen in Winchester, Twisted Nose Gin, distilled with locally grown watercress, has become a favourite tipple for many across Hampshire and beyond.

The award-winning spirit is gently distilled with fresh, peppery watercress. This month, the Winchester Distillery team has unveiled the stunning new look Twisted Nose, which is sure to attract many new followers with its beautiful design and help Paul and his team take the gin to new heights.

Presented in a bespoke bottle that ripples and refracts like the surface of a Hampshire chalk stream, Twisted Nose is a vibrant celebration of provenance and place. Crafted to capture the natural habitat of where it’s now made – the former watercress factory in Old Alresford - the award-winning spirit is gently distilled with fresh, peppery watercress, grown just outside the distillery door in pure chalk streams, to give it a unique and uplifting twist. The watercress is combined with nine other carefully selected botanicals, which include coriander seed grown in the South Downs, lavender from Long Barn in Alresford and of course juniper without which it couldn’t be called gin. The final result is a herbaceous yet delicately floral dry gin, beginning with soft sweet citrus notes from pink grapefruit, then some spicy undertones, finishing with a peppery sparkle from the fresh watercress.

Twisted Nose is a vibrant celebration of provenance and place. Renowned for its nose-tickling tones of pepper and mustard, the botanical name for watercress, Nasturtium officinale, literally translates as “twisted nose”, which was the inspiration for the unusual name.

For more information about Twisted Nose Gin, please visit

Twisted Nose G&T Fill a high ball glass with good quality ice, the more ice you use, the less it will dilute your drink, pour over 50ml of Twisted Nose Gin then top with a good quality tonic water such as Fever-Tree. Garnish with a slice of pink grapefruit and enjoy!

Watercress Martini If you’re not so much of a tonic fan, not everyone likes the bitterness; then you could try making a classic martini. Chill a cocktail glass. Take 50ml of Twisted Nose Watercress Gin 50ml and 15ml of white vermouth such as Belsazar. If you have it, add two dashes of grapefruit bitters. Stir all ingredients together with large cubed ice for around 10-20 seconds & strain into the chilled glass.

Pinocchio: The best Panto ever with no strings attached! A brilliant fun packed version of Pinocchio is set to hit the stage at TFT this Christmas. Building on their reputation of bringing classic fairytales to life TFT’s version of Carlo Collodi’s dark tale is lovingly created into a new all singing, dancing, hilarious Christmas panto… all of your favourite songs and characters are here plus a few new ones.

Adam Feeley is director of Pinocchio and said: “Pinocchio is a beautiful story of a wooden puppet crafted by a woodcarver Geppetto, who dreams that one day it will grow up to become a real boy. Pinocchio is a classic tale and the panto will be as close to the original story as possible. Families will love the show; it is full of laughs, songs and of course there will be plenty of opportunity to join in!”

Walt Disney’s cartoon movie was released almost 80 years ago and in celebration of this special anniversary, Titchfield Festival Theatre brings Pinocchio to life on the stage with a feel-good production that will get everyone in the mood for Christmas.

Adam continued, “Pinocchio is one of the favourite stories of our Artistic Director Kevin Fraser and we are determined to make this year’s panto very special. We have a lovely cast including experienced actors and several newcomers too. It has been a while since the theatre performed something really traditional – we promise everyone a real treat!”

The show will follow the adventures of Pinocchio – famous for his nose which grows longer when he tells a fib – together with his friends and family. Will Mr Geppetto the village toymaker ever make his hearts dream come true? Can his wonderful wooden boy Pinocchio find his way home without his nose falling off? Will Mama Macaroni foil the evil Stromboli’s plans?

Pinocchio opens on Wednesday 11th December until Saturday 21st December 2019 at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. Matinee performances: Saturday 14th, Sunday 15th and Saturday 21st December all at 2.30pm.

8th December 2019 | 3.00pm at Portsmouth Guildhall. Tickets available now.
