Inside your edition, you will find a rich collection of content, including a feature on the Hampshire Gardens Trust’s new president, Alan Titchmarsh and Creative Fun in Petersfield. We are well into the swing of summer with the wonderful weather we have been blessed with; in this issue, Sophie advises the best ways to protect your skin with SPF! And as Vitamin D is a primary defender of our body’s immunity, our health article explains why it is so essential and how summer is the perfect time of year to top our reserves. Gentlemen, if you haven’t already, why not try sailing this summer? Sailing is an activity that you can start at any age, and with our stunning South Coast so close, there’s never been a better time to try it: during your staycation this year.
Tipple Talk brings you three refreshing cocktails to try this summer – all simple to make and delicious. And finally, we take a look at adding a touch of pink to your interiors – since Pantone declared Rose Quartz its colour of the year back in 2016, the trend of ‘Millennial Pink’ has grown and grown. Enter our competitions for your chance to win Sparkling Afternoon Tour and Tea for Two at Hambledon Vineyard - one of my personal favourites. So without further ado, it’s time to sit in the summer sunshine with a drink, soft or alcoholic (I know which I’d prefer) and enjoy this edition.

Whether you are a dress lover, like to be relaxed and comfortable, or like a bit of colour, then we’ve got you covered. We’ve also heroed one of our favourite up and coming swimwear brands, FISCH, who champion sustainable swimwear - a really trending and important topic of now.

STYLE insider Designer spotlight on Fisch We all know we need to shop more sustainably, but when it comes to swimwear it’s even more crucial. Why is it so important? Swimsuits are made out of synthetic materials such as Polyurethane, the creation of which has a harmful impact on dwindling natural resources. If we’re more aware, we can be mindful when shopping. We wanted to shine a light on one of our favourite and upcoming designers, FISCH.
Launched in 2017, the brand was born from the desire to create statement swimwear with a superior fit and timeless design that helped to clean waste from the ocean. FISCH is an eco-innovative label inspired by the brand’s creative director’s childhood spent on Saint Barthélemy snorkelling and exploring the island’s wildlife. You’ll see that many of their patterns are beautifully coloured, and ocean-inspired.
“The brand has been celebrated as a pioneer for its use of upcycled materials.” What’s more, FISCH was one of the first brands to use the material ECONYL® a 100% regenerated nylon fibre crafted from abandoned fishing nets and other types of nylon waste. The brand has been celebrated as a pioneer for its use of upcycled materials. The fabrics that they use are woven by the world’s premier manufacturers of high-performance fabrics. This ensures constant attention to detail and unparalleled quality - we are totally obsessed. With eco-innovation being the keyword in all that they do, 10 % of global FISCH sales are donated to an organisation called Healthy Seas. We’ve pulled out a few of our favourite looks, but make sure to check them out on their brand website because you don’t want to miss their full collection.
Utterly unique and gorgeous!

Here are of our favourite Vitamin D
The benefits of and how to top up your reserves Did you know that summer is the best time of year for you to top up your Vitamin D reserves ahead of autumn/winter? Vitamin D is a primary defender of your body’s immunity; in order to maintain a robust immune system, it is vital that your Vitamin D levels are optimal. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to: • • • • • • • •
A compromised immune system Risk of bone disease Poor moods and depression Poor muscle function High blood pressure Diabetes Cancers Multiple Sclerosis
The good news?
There are many things you can do to top up your Vitamin D reserves naturally.
1. Take a daily walk outside Top up your Vitamin D reserves by taking a daily walk outside. Here at The Maas Clinic, we use the D Minder Pro app for guidance—which tells you the best time of day for you to absorb Vitamin D naturally outside—based on your location. 2. Invest in a daylight lamp Too much time indoors can have significant ramifications on your Vitamin D levels. One way to boost your Vitamin D levels indoors is to invest in a daylight lamp. Daylight lamps mimic sunshine and can be used anywhere in your home and/or office and as a daylight alarm clock. 3. Adjust your diet Magnesium and Vitamin K2 support your body’s Vitamin D absorption. Therefore it’s important to eat a diet rich in these elements to keep your Vitamin D reserves at optimal levels. Great vegetable sources of Magnesium and Vitamin K include Spinach, Kale, Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage. 4. Take a Vitamin D supplement Between 500 iu’s - 2000 iu’s per day is sufficient for most people. When it comes to choosing your supplements, do your research. The vitamin or mineral you’re purchasing should be the first or second item on the supplement’s ingredient list. You may also wish to take a Magnesium and K2 supplement to maximise your Vitamin D absorption. 5. Test your Vitamin D levels regularly, especially in the winter The only way to get a real-time gauge on your Vitamin D levels is by testing. This is especially relevant during the winter months when there is very little natural sunlight in the UK. You can order a Vitamin D test online, via an independent clinic or make a request with your GP. Once you know your levels, you can make lifestyle adjustments to accommodate your pursuit of optimal Vitamin D reserves.
Vitamin D is a critical element in your overall health; without sufficient levels, your natural immunity will be impaired, and the ripple effects on other systems can be severe. The transition from summer to autumn/winter will feel more gentle if you keep your Vitamin D levels topped up.
The or you’re purchasing should be the first or second item on the supplement’s ingredient list.
Interested in learning more about your Vitamin D levels and how they can support your immune system? Check out our sister company Level Up Health! We have a 30-day Super Immunity course that addresses all things immune health. Get in touch via the clinic for details or find us on Instagram @LevelUpHealthUK. 01730 825 457 email@example.com 3 & 4 Poppets Barn, West Harting Road, South Harting, West Sussex GU31 5BG
SPF! Firstly what do we want? UVA and UVB protection. When do we apply it? 365 days of the year, as our last skincare step. UVA rays age our skin, and UVB rays burn our skin - simple. You could be doing all the right things with your retinol and Vitamin C - but if you’re not wearing SPF daily, then you’re wasting your time and money. SPF is the best ageing prevention out there, and yet so many of us are still looking for the right one - so here are my current top five on the market right now. Estée Lauder Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defence Aqua UV Gel SPF 50 - it’s surprisingly lightweight for a factor 50. This potent, watery gel is ideal for layering with the rest of your skincare and underneath makeup. Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Green Tea and Tiger Lily Extract shield the skin from UV rays to fight against sun damage and protect our collagen and elastin to avoid premature ageing. It’s incredibly cooling, hydrating and leaves the skin glowing and ready to face the day. She’s done it again, Sarah Chapman Skin Insurance SPF 50 Invisible. The world-renowned facialist to beauty editors and A-listers worldwide has just released her new SPF 50. This featherweight formula delivers ultra-high protection and DNA-
repair technology, alongside a truly invisible finish - perfect for all skin tones and use beneath makeup. It’s packed full of powerful antioxidants and leaves us with a healthy, natural glow. Fragranced with a subtle hint of jasmine, hyacinth and rose essential oils - it’s the perfect blend of science meets botanical that you have been looking for, and her Skinesis Luxury Chelsea Clinic is the stuff dreams are made of.
SPF is the best ageing prevention out there, and yet so many of us are still looking for the right one. For those suffering from sensitive skin: I recommend Pai British Summer Time Zinc & Cotton Extract SPF 30 Sensitive Sunscreen. It’s the perfect nongreasy finish to any morning skincare routine and battles blue light and infra-red protection as well. The zinc acts as a physical shield against UVA/UVB light, and the cotton extract is rich in
Vitamin E, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to help protect the condition of our skin from damage caused by previous UV rays. Pai pride themselves on their sustainable outlook on beauty, and it’s something we should all take note of. Glossier, the cool kid on the block, has pulled it out of the bag again with their Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen SPF 30. This is another one for someone who prefers a lightweight water-gel SPF. It works for all skin types and would be the perfect SPF to introduce to the younger generation. Encouraging your sons and daughters into wearing SPF daily so that when they get into their 30s, they don’t have to spend time and money reversing mistakes made in their 20s - skincare mistakes anyway! Finally, Cetaphil Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF50+. This is the most affordable of the SPF’s at £12.99 and it’s available in your local Boots. It’s a lightweight two in one day cream and SPF, providing extremely high UV protection whilst caring for our skin barrier - perfect for sensitive skin, including a typical English rose that easily burns just by looking at the sun. A no-nonsense, fragrance-free SPF that is incredibly hydrating as well as being loved by dermatologists certainly not one to ignore. By Sophie Paravicini www.sophiesuggestsskin.wordpress.com

TRY SAILING THIS SUMMER s the summer holidays approach, now is a great time to enjoy our South Coast locations and explore them from a boat. Chichester, Portsmouth and Langstone Harbours and the Solent all offer fabulous opportunities to get on the water.
Sailing is an activity you can start at any age with various types of boat for different activities. There are sailing dinghies for children or families or larger sailing yachts that can go further. From small opentop dayboats about 18’+ long to practical cabin cruisers where it’s possible to sleep. The larger yachts tend to get much more luxurious with up to 3 or 4 cabins, hot water showers, a galley and all mod cons inside.
Getting started If you are new to sailing, a trial session with a professional instructor is an excellent way to get a taste of whether life on the water is for you. For dinghy sailing, Cobnor Outdoor Activities Trust in Chichester Harbour offers opportunities for a day trip for 5 exploring the harbour with an instructor, one or two-day familiarisation courses for adults and children or a series of ‘Start Sailing’ courses too. www.cobnor.com To try your hand at yacht cruising, centres such as Universal Yachting on the Hamble River offer a range of choices, including a family sailing day,
two-day start yachting experiences or the option of a five day RYA course to really get ‘stuck in’. www.universalyachting.com.
How to carry on sailing? Once you’ve got started, many local sailing clubs, such as Emsworth and Itchenor, now have ‘club dinghies’ for members to hire, which is a great way to build experience.
Where to start? Choose a venue that is recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association), which means the Instructors, Centre or Club are fully approved. Contact them for a chat about the best choices for you. www.onthewater.com www.r ya.org.uk/get-afloat/Pages/startsailing-boating
without owning one!
If you fancy speeding off to glorious bays or beaches and want to avoid the summer traffic, a powerboat is the way to travel. You’ll miss the queues and get to destinations that can be harder to reach by car. Anchor up, swim, picnic on the beach or visit one of the many boutique cafés or restaurants around the Solent shores.
Zhik UVActive® shirts protect you from the sun’s harmful rays The UVActive fabric blocks out 99.5% of UVA and UVB even when the tops are wet, which far exceeds the exacting UPF 50+ rating. These significantly high results are measured under the US AATCC-183-2004 standards (Determination of the UVR Transmission of Dry Textile) and the Australian/New Zealand standard (AS/NZS-4399:201) for sun protective clothing. Mens UVActive long sleeve top £39.95 www.zhik.com
Zhik’s super lightweight Fuze deck shoes will keep you glued on board! Having the right footwear is essential for boating, especially having a proper ‘marine sole’ if you are boarding a friends boat. Zhik Fuze are ultra-lightweight, sneaker-style deck shoes. Tough, sporty, and flexible they give exceptionally secure foot support, aided by the reinforced upper panel shaping and the inner sole design. Fuze Shoes come in Grey and Ash UK Size 5.5 to 12.5 £109.95 www.zhik.com
The traditional perception is to go powerboating means owning a boat. Yet this has completely changed. Boat Club Trafalgar is a new concept of a ‘boat share’ club. Similar to belonging to a health spa and gym, the Club owns a fleet of pristine, quality boats, fully maintained. Fuelled and ready on the dock for when you want to go boating. Members simply book their boat of the day via an App, arrive and set off. On return, simply hand the keys back and walk away. The club team handles cleaning, storing and preparing the boat for the next member. As well as not having to deal with any boat maintenance, towing or launching, the Club includes full training and induction as part of the monthly membership. Even if you are completely new to boating, you can be afloat within a matter of weeks. www.boatclubtrafalgar.com
INS100™ Zhik’s latest ‘street style’ inshore jacket With an athletic street-style, modern cut you’ll look equally at home or on the boardwalk in Zhik’s INS100™ jacket. It’s the perfect technical, lightweight jacket that crosses between jumping on a boat and your shoreside lifestyle. INS100 available in Black, Navy, Platinum £129.95 www.zhik.com

A Touch of
Since Pantone declared Rose Quartz its colour of the year back in 2016, the trend of ‘Millennial Pink’ has grown and grown.
illennial pink, otherwise known as blush or delicate pink, is a trend that is simply not going anywhere.
From sofas and bathrooms to living room walls and bedding, this beautiful shade can work all around the home. For anybody who adored pink in their childhood rooms, discovering the adult world of pink can be even more fun and playful. Pink has an incredible ability to look chic as well as boost your mood. But, where to start? Incorporating this colour into your home can be daunting, with fears that it may be overly feminine or childish. However, there are plenty of ways you can feed it into your home. Pink is romantic yet subtle, both nostalgic and modern, and, perhaps most importantly, incredibly easy to live with. Beautiful South has compiled our top styling tips on how to think-pink and jazz up your living environment. Read on to find out more!
Experiment by mixing with different colour pinks can create a truly unique space. The little touches Begin by incorporating just a touch of pink here and there. We are talking about coral-coloured curtains, rose gold lamps, and cotton-candy throws – even a barbie-pink kettle. Simply take a look at SMEG’s pink appliance range for some serious inspiration. By adding a SMEG kettle, fridge or toaster into your kitchen, you can instantly transport yourself into a retro and fun space. Accessories are far less of a commitment than paint, so they are a good place to start. If you want to try out pink decor and experiment, tradein everyday pieces items, like pillows, towels or bedding, for a pink alternative. This is a great way to start slowly and ease yourself in.
Find your shade Are you brave enough to opt for a paint? From salmons and dusky pinks to melons and fuchsias, there are plenty of shades to choose from.
Accessories are far less of a commitment than paint, so they are a good place to start.
Dusky pinks are ideal for injecting warmth and calmness into your home and are a good place to start if you are feeling overwhelmed by the thought of incorporating pink. Whilst rosy pinks are perfect for adding life and vibrance to a room. Remember that you don’t have to stick to just one shade! Experiment by mixing with different colour pinks can create a truly unique space. It’s important to add in the right shade of pink that works with your living space, considering the lighting and ambience of your home. Accent walls work well in any space but are particularly striking when it comes to places where you’d least expect to find them – like behind a bookshelf or on the chimney breast. If you’re looking to adorn your walls in a new colour, we would recommend a trip to Farrow & Ball in Guilford to help choose the best shade for you.
The colourful couch There is a current obsession with pink sofas, and we are here for it! From velvet crushed sofas to scallop armchairs, pink living room furniture is becoming more and more popular. Pink furniture is very vibrant, eye-catching and easily acts as the centrepiece to your room. Looking for some inspiration? The majority of high-street furniture shops will now house these
sofas; our particular favourite is the Pudding Sofa in Blushed Pink Velvet from LOAF. It is perfect for lounging and feeling luxurious. When it comes to the surrounding decor of your pink sofa, we would recommend mixing in elements of brass or gold, adding in white marble or walnut wood.
Feel good with flowers Arranging a bouquet of fresh pink flowers – especially pale pink tulips or peonies – is an easy way to add a pop of the shade to an otherwise neutral space. Try mixing peachy pinks with burgundy flowers for a more romantic bouquet. By adding flowers into your living space, your mood can instantly lift. We’re lucky enough to have some brilliant florists in the area, including Flowers By The Bridge in West Meon.

1 WEST MEON
hanks to Covid-19, the West Meon Music Festival may be celebrating its 10th anniversary a year later than expected – but celebrating it certainly will be! Founded in 2011 by the Primrose Piano Quartet – one of the UK’s leading chamber ensembles – the festival has been enthralling Meon Valley audiences with exciting performances of some of the classic repertoire’s best-loved works ever since. Over the years, they have been joined by many internationally-renowned “guest musicians”, including tenor James Gilchrist and clarinettist Michael Collins. The programme for this year’s festival, from 9th to 12th September, is largely based on that originally planned for the 2020 10th anniversary, with the event extended to four days and including eight concerts as well as masterclasses for young local musicians.
INCLUDED IN THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL ARE SUCH CLASSIC FAVOURITES AS SCHUBERT’S LAST CHAMBER WORKAND HAYDN’S STRING QUARTET IN D OP.76, NO. 5 This year’s guests also include two rising stars of the musical world: guitarist Laura Snowden, described by BBC Music Magazine as a “string sensation”, and Roman Kosyakov, winner of the Hastings International Piano Competition. While most events are held in St John’s Church in West Meon, the festival spreads across the Meon Valley with Laura’s recital taking place at All Saints’ in East Meon, while in nearby Warnford, cellist Maxim Calver – a BBC Young Musician finalist from 2018 – will be performing at the Church of Our Lady.
Included in this year’s festival are such classic favourites as Schubert’s last chamber work – his String Quintet in C major, Brahms’ Horn Trio with Stephen Stirling, one of England’s most soughtafter horn soloists, and Haydn’s String Quartet in D Op.76, No. 5. There will also be a late-night concert to tempt those who prefer twentiethcentury music, with works including Schoenberg’s String Trio, written in 1946, and extracts from “Variations on a Burns’ Air” commissioned by the Primrose in 2009 with contributions from some of our foremost contemporary composers. Full details of all the festival events can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk and the box offices opens on 1st July.

Handmade Studios Yarn Shop What started as a textile workshop in Rowlands Castle eight years ago, has evolved into a thriving yarn and knitting accessories shop in Petersfield. Linda Kirkbride’s love of yarn has led her to have one of the largest collections of hand-dyed yarns in a yarn shop in the UK. The collection is on show in the form of skeins of yarns from independent dyers taking up three of the shop’s walls, bringing vibrant colour and texture to what was already a knitter’s dream. Other products available are haberdashery, patterns and jewellery, showing that the shop aims to cater to a wide array of skill levels and interests. “I have always loved textiles, and with a background in textile arts, I find that when I open the door of my shop, for me, it’s like walking into a sweet shop!” Linda also runs ‘Knit and Natter’ sessions which encourage people to socialise and get going on a “Her instructions are very clear, and she is so patient. Never makes me feel awkward when slower than others, repeating instructions when I missed something.” Workshops held previously include machine sewing for beginners, Quilt in a Day and, for children, making a creative tote bag. If you’re the competitive type, the Petersfield Sewing Bee Challenge is held each year: a competition that aims to encourage people to sew & create. Challenges are set which are completed at home & then displayed & judged in the shop with category winners and an overall winner being honoured during the finals event. “Completing a creative project is very satisfying and invaluable for raising self-esteem. A mindful activity like sewing is the perfect remedy for stress or work overload. We should not underestimate how good it is for mental health to stop and focus on one thing.” “Creative people are generally a kind and social bunch, eager to share skills and enjoy sewing and knitting together and working on projects together, thus alleviating loneliness and creating a sense of community spirit.” Sew Creative 20-22 Lavant Street, Petersfield, GU32 3EW 01730 858020 • www.sewcreative.org.uk

Sublime Summertime It’s that time again! The British summer, the few months of every year where the days get longer, the weather gets hotter, and life seems just that little bit easier. But these longer, hotter, more jampacked days may leave you feeling... thirsty!?
We’ve got just the things to help solve your problem. A fruity, refreshing punch, a cool, spicy vodka-based classic, and a unique, bittersweet Italian staple are just the three cocktails you are going to need that will help keep you sublime for the summertime.
The ‘Moscow Mule’ ironically has nothing to do with either Moscow or Mules, but after just a few sips of this delicious cocktail, no one will care!
The ‘Aperol Spritz’ is the perfect cocktail for a summer filled with fun & celebration. From the vibrant, unforgettable orange colour to the light, unique bittersweet taste, the combination of Aperol, Prosecco and soda creates this delicious classic Italian cocktail, a staple for the British summertime.
The simple yet delightful mix of vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice combined inside a copper mug creates this classic cocktail, which is perfectly suited for summer!
• 50ml Aperol • 75ml Prosecco • Soda Water
• 50ml Vodka • 150-200ml Ginger Beer • 10ml Lime Juice
1. In a copper mug (or any glass if you don’t have one) over crushed ice, mix the vodka, ginger beer and lime juice. 2. Garnish with a wedge of lime and enjoy it in the sun!
1. Fill a glass with the Aperol over a cube of ice. 2. Add the Prosecco, and then top up to the level you desire with soda water (if you’d like!)
THE PALOMA Being the most popular tequila-based cocktail in Mexico and adopting its name from the Spanish word for ‘dove’, this fruity & refreshing cocktail is the perfect complement for the summer sun coming in the months ahead. If you love tequila, you will LOVE this fabulous drink. (Ingredients per 1 serving) • 50ml Tequila • 50ml Pink Grapefruit Juice • 15ml Lime Juice • 1 tbsp of Agave Syrup • Soda Water
1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice as well as the first four ingredients on the list. 2. Shake well for approximately 20 seconds. 3. Strain the mixture into a glass or jug over ice, top with soda water and garnish with a slice of grapefruit for the perfect cocktail.
An Evening at
Walking through Emsworth Yacht Harbour towards The Deck felt like we had jetted to the Canary Islands, excitedly approaching the restaurant where we were to spend the summers evening enjoying fresh food and the company of friends and family we've missed over the past year. As we arrived at The Deck, we were greeted by owner Ed and advised of the three hours complimentary parking. Myself and my party of three were seated within the newly upgraded balcony area with clear sides that descend when night draws to keep us cosy under the heaters. From the get-go, The Deck resembled a contemporary, no-fuss atmosphere. A beautifully located marina restaurant in a relaxed setting instantly made us feel like we were about to embark on something special.
The lemon sole was both delicate and crisp with capers to add another layer of flavour. The evening menu presented fish, seafood, meat and vegetarian options for starters, mains, and sides. The tentative waiters delivered our drinks of choice, including pale ales and rosé, followed by an Aperol spritz and a Moscow mule decorated with lemon and lime shredding; the perfect cocktails to sip on a summers evening. The impeccable presentation was noticeable from the off. Pan-seared scallops were cooked to perfection, served on top of a pea puree and decorated with parma ham crisp, for £11 as a starter or £21 for a main. The moreish Moules
marinière had the option of £9 for a starter or £16 for a main and came in white wine, cream and garlic sauce served with freshly baked white bread. One other group member and I opted out of a starter as the restaurant's famous main: the seafood platter for two grabbed our attention, and we didn't want to spoil our feast. The grand seafood platter consisted of freshly caught and cooked mussels, oysters, prawns, tempura hake, a whole lobster, white crab meat and smoked salmon; presented on a bed of rocket and asparagus accompanied with hand-cut chips, freshly baked bread and aioli. Wow. For £120, this sharing dish was one I will never forget. The gorgeously soft salmon and crab paired perfectly with the warm bread whilst the battered tempura hake melted in my mouth. The lobster was as fresh as I'd ever tasted it. The muscles and prawns were submerged in a bowl of garlic butter sauce to stay piping hot and flavourful. The other two diners chose flat iron steak and the catch of the day, fresh from the fishmongers next door - as with all the seafood served here. The lemon sole was both delicate and crisp, easy off the bone and garnished with capers to add
another layer of flavour. The dish priced at £21 and came with local hand-picked asparagus and new potatoes. As for the final main, the beautiful slices of steak were cooked to perfection and plated alongside a watercress salad and a flat mushroom, red onion and tomato stack with a side of hand-cut chips and peppercorn sauce for £19. Desserts, both options priced at £8 each, demonstrated that presentation was once again immaculate and the taste even better. The chocolate and Baileys tart were decorated with raspberry cream, popcorn, and brownie crumb to hit that sweet spot. Finally, the passionfruit delice composed a classic Madeira sponge with a passionfruit mousse and jelly - a delightful light treat as a perfect way to finish the heavenly feast. This summer is the perfect time to explore a nature reserve near you. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has over 50 nature reserves in our two counties which cover a wide variety of habitats, home to some amazing wildlife. Whether it’s a blooming wildflower meadow or a woodland in leaf, many of the habitats on our nature reserves are looking their best over the summer months. We cover some of our favourite places to explore and the wildlife to look out for as you do.
moths like the jersey tiger are also on the wing. On a cool evening, you might get a waft of sweet honeysuckle, a real treat for the nose. Woodlands are a perfect place to brush up on birdsong, as resident species are joined by summer migrants coming to breed.
Pamber Forest has excellent trails with ancient trees to discover or see if you can spot red squirrels leaping between the pines at Bouldnor Forest Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight.
The long days of summer make for unique wildlife encounters. Foxes and badgers venture out in daylight hours - you might see them in the dappled shade of the trees on a forest path. Butterflies basking with their wings open, warming up ready for the day can be seen, and striking day-flying
Britain has lost an astonishing 97% of its wildflower meadows since the 1930s, but luckily there are still fine examples of this wildlife-rich habitat to visit in our two counties. Meadows are at their most colourful in summer, with wildflowers stimulating the senses with a tapestry of colour and scents. Delicate lilac harebells, aromatic wild thyme and the yellow froth of lady’s bedstraw are just some of the plants to look for. Insects provide the soundtrack, pollinators buzzing between the flowers as they feed. Many of the insects found in meadows are common, such as the gatekeeper butterfly. But, their numbers are far higher here
than in other habitats as nectar is so abundant. Birds and bats will have young to feed, and the buzzing insect population provides them with plentiful food as they swoop and soar over the flowers. Barton Meadows and St Clair’s Meadow are two meadow nature reserves not to miss this summer.
The Solent coastline is bursting with wildlife in summer. Beneath the waves, seagrass meadows provide a nursery for marine species like bass and seahorses, and a little further inland, the shingle habitats are nesting places for gulls and terns. Listening to the waves crash as noisy seabirds circle overhead as the salt spray hits your face is a wildlife experience not to be missed. Redshank and lapwing raise their fluffy chicks at Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve or hunt for crabs in the shallows at Milton Locks, just minutes away from busy Portsmouth. Find out all about the Trust’s nature reserves and how you can help us look after these extraordinary places for wildlife by visiting www.hiwwt.org.uk/nature-reserves.

The Natural Cook Company
ecca Hoddinott has always believed that food has an almost magical ability to bring people together.
It is no wonder then that five years ago, when she was looking for a change from her corporate career, she was inspired to set up her own cookery school. Nestled in the Hampshire countryside, near Alton, The Natural Cook Company’s bespoke teaching studio is a foodie haven for anyone looking to learn to cook delicious recipes from around the world. Working with all ages, from kids to corporates, the cookery school prides itself on having something for everyone with the main focus of making even the hardiest cynic fall in love with the fun of home cooking! From the very start, Becca’s approach has been to make her customers feel like they have spent time relaxing with friends, rather than feeling the sweat on their brow and the pressure to chop chop chop!. “Making a delicious meal is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits of home cooking,” explains Becca. “It’s also about the sense of achievement, building self-confidence and the mindfulness of the process, which is all part of the joy! There is nothing better than seeing someone beaming with pride after having a fun class with us.”
There is nothing better than seeing someone beaming with pride after having a fun class with us. Becca works with a team of talented chefs with varying specialities to offer a hugely diverse range of classes at the cookery school or to cook for you at home, and she is always on the lookout for something new and exciting to offer, as well as the classic favourites. Although the classes may have an international flavour, she prides herself on sourcing local seasonal ingredients and environmentally friendly products wherever possible and often collaborates with local artisans to run events, supporting the local community. It is not unusual to find freshly picked Hampshire Watercress appearing in a recipe or for a dessert to feature some home-grown rhubarb. Throughout lockdown, despite having to close her kitchen doors, Becca switched from classes in-person to teaching online and was delighted to find, as well as her regular, local clients, she was also cooking with customers from all around the world! In fact, these sessions were so popular the cookery school now offers regular online classes
and interactive team cook-alongs for businesses, alongside the more regular to in-person classes and corporate team-building days, allowing anyone usually separated by geography, to get together, reconnect as a unit, and have fun whilst making something delicious to share with their family. Becca explains: “It’s been fantastic to go from an initial conversation with a manager and being told how disconnected everyone was, to then being able to act as the conduit to allow them to reconnect and see them all laughing with each other by the end. Food has such a fabulous way of breaking down barriers and bringing people together again.” Now lockdown restrictions are easing, Becca and her chefs are excited to be welcoming people back to the kitchen for in-person classes once again and looking forward to a bumper summer of fun with food. So, whether you are wanting to give your child a birthday party to remember, bring a group together again or simply treat yourself to someone else cooking for you at home for a change (and filling your freezer!), The Natural Cook Company can find the natural cook in anyone and leave you with a big smile on your face! lthough lockdown has been incredibly hard, it has also opened doors for a refreshing change for many people bringing out the creativity in our new traders.
During lockdown, creators and talented local artists have all been busy working away to create some incredible pieces to sell at the market. With the sad fact that the High Street shops are continuing to close down now more than ever, our local market has been an essential part of the high street fabric to create that wonderful shopping buzz. We were delighted to return back in April for our first market and have been going great guns ever since! Alongside the creatives, we also have many talented musicians who have not had the opportunity to play live for a very long time. Our market is diverse as the city itself. We’re 100% Pompey homegrown, and our passion is in supporting the local community. The market vibrates with city life; walking through the buzz of the stallholders, buyers, and browsers, is enlivening and infectious! This year, we present the most diverse traders our city has to offer. From incredible artwork, and beautiful
jewellery, to tasty homemade chocolate that would not look out of place along Parisian High Street. Candlemakers to make your house smell divine, screen printing onto T-shirts and bags, and incredible photographers who make our wonderful surroundings of Portsmouth and Southsea come to life, and so much more. So get your bag for life ready as there has never been a more exciting time to shop at Love Southsea market! CONSERVATION at its best BY THE NATIONAL TRUST
hen we think about the National Trust, most of us immediately recall the grand country houses that we have visited, but this renowned organisation is about so much more, including preserving and improving vast areas of coast and countryside through their nature conservation work. The National Trust also helps to educate visitors through their example, about how they can also help make a difference to the environment by encouraging us to garden for nature. Their many inspiring projects include the creation of a minimeadow with 50 varieties of wildflowers at The Vyne, at Sherborne Saint John, Hampshire. This project transforms the historic walled garden every summer and clearly demonstrates how creating a flower meadow area is a wonderful way to attract more pollinators to your garden. Without bees, butterflies, wasps, flies and beetles, we’d have no flowers, fruit and veg. The flowering grasses in a meadow provide shelter for wildlife and protect the soil from excess evaporation, and the insects, in turn, are food for countless birds and mammals.
NEW HOMES FOR DORMICE Most of the NT properties and estates are involved in some form of nature conservation work, including Hatchlands Park in Surrey, with their Dormice project. Hazel dormice are under threat. Changes in woodland management, farming practices, loss of hedgerows and the fragmentation of woodland have all taken a toll on their living space. They are so rare you’re highly unlikely to see one in the wild, and as a protected species, they must only be touched by licensed handlers. Having discovered a number of pieces of evidence as well as a sighting of a Dormouse in the flesh, an expert from the Surrey Dormouse Group has confirmed that these rare creatures are indeed making their home at Hatchlands, in the 50 nesting boxes across areas of woodland on the estate.
BEAVERS RELEASED Another exciting wildlife project has been the release of a pair of beavers in the South Downs as part of the National Trust’s effort to restore nature. The beavers will help to create a wildliferich wetland landscape and improve water quality.
CLIMATE CHANGE Climate Change is the single biggest threat to the National Trust’s precious landscapes and historic houses: having to adapt to unpredictable weather patterns while working hard to restore the damage caused by wildfires, heavy rain, increased humidity, high winds, droughts, and shifting shores. Another helping hand they are giving to protecting the environment is to establish 20 million new trees across National Trust sites by 2030.
VOLUNTEERING Volunteers are an essential part of the Trust’s existence, and the organisation couldn’t manage without them. You’ll find that a number of property websites carry information highlighting the many benefits of volunteering, including opportunities to make a real difference while making new friends. However, to discover exactly what’s available now, visit: www.nationaltrust. org.uk/ways-to-volunteer, or consider joining your local supporter group: www.nationaltrust. org.uk/supporter-groups.

They saw potential in my work, and that was the confidence boost I needed. It took me a little time to realise my heart was in creating bespoke treats for events, Weddings, Birthday parties and creating the same treats daily was something I started to feel limited in - creating for events was where my passion lay.
I make an array of sweet treats, including cakes, Cookies, Cake slices, Meringue Pops, Chocolate covered Cookies, Wreaths, and Macarons. I feel fortunate to have worked with so many great people so far, and it still blows my mind that they chose me to create for their celebrations. Each bespoke order is a fresh canvas and somewhere I get to showcase my creativity. I pride myself on thinking outside the box and the authenticity on each unique order. Behind every bespoke treat is a thoughtfully composed idea brought to life. I often work with party planners in London, drawing inspiration from their mood boards, colour schemes and themes for their event. Being part of a celebration,
whether that be an intimate family event, milestone birthdays, super-luxe installations or bespoke cookie boxes to announce the arrival of a new family member I feel is a huge honour, one I feel privileged to be part of. As the post-pandemic search for space continues, I thought it would be useful to provide a current overview of the market. Currently, homes are selling faster now than during ‘normal’ market conditions, and with constrained supply in most areas, sellers are in a prime position.
Currently, homes are selling faster now than during ‘normal’ market conditions. The average annual UK house price growth is up 4.1% (up 3.7% in the South East), and new forecasts from the Zoopla House Price Index show that the number of sales completions will rise to 1.5 million this year; the highest level since 2007. The tsunami of activity has been underpinned by a combination of households reviewing how and where they live and the much-debated stamp duty holiday. Whilst the ending of stamp duty relief at the end of June will of course impact the market, I predict that the search for space will continue, and the housing market is set to remain busy through to Q4 of 2021. Despite the value of sales in 2021 forecast to be £461 billion, a massive increase of 68% from 2019, high sales volumes are eroding the supply of available properties, with a demand/supply imbalance increasingly focused on family homes. The total stock of homes for sale remains constrained and is down 20.8% compared to the average last year. Also, basking in the increased movement of the property market and supported by the supply/demand imbalance, rental growth has reached the highest level in four and a half years. In the central zones of our major cities, during the lockdown, as demand eased and supply increased, there was negative pressure. However, as of May 2021, demand is beginning to build once more in the city centres.

called ‘foot garages’, which improve legroom while keeping the seating position low. In terms of boot space, there’s a 366-litre boot (see VW Golf), plus a front nose compartment offering another 81-litres. There aren’t many cars that can keep up with a Taycan, whatever power or drivetrain they might use. Most customers will opt for one of the two top variants, the ‘Turbo’ or ‘Turbo S’. Both put out 616bhp in standard form, extendable with an Overboost function to 671bhp on the Turbo and 750bhp on the Turbo S.
Its heart may be electric, but its soul is distinctively Porsche.
owerful petrol engines have become sanitised by turbochargers, particulate filters and camera-driven technology. Ultimately, fossilfuelled engines have to go, but what replaces them doesn’t necessarily have to be an automotive domestic appliance. Enter the Porsche Taycan.
come as standard with Porsche’s smaller 79.2kWh battery pack: you’ll have to pay extra for the larger 93kWh ‘Performance Battery Plus’ pack. Strangely, given that this is an electric car without an engine, Porsche has retained its ‘Turbo’ badging for the Taycan Turbo (£115,860) and the Turbo S (£138,830).
Visually, there’s plenty of Porsche DNA here specifically, the four-point LED headlights, the lateral air intakes and the pronounced wings that flank the flat bonnet made possible by the compactness of the electric drive unit.
Behind the wheel, there’s a dashboard apparently influenced by the original 911 design from 1963, and the instrument cluster is wider than the steering wheel. The gauges are displayed on a cowl-free 16.8-inch curved digital screen. The higher central infotainment screen is 10.9-inches, plus there’s also a lower 8.4-inch display for the climate controls, including a notepad for entering info into the sat nav.
There are four Taycan model choices, starting with the RWD ‘base’ Taycan (£70,690). The other three feature AWD, starting with the Taycan 4S (£83,580). The Taycan and Taycan 4S both
Size-wise, the Porsche Taycan sits between a 911 and a Panamera, and rear passenger space reflects that: two adults will be quite comfortable. Special recesses in the under-floor battery allow for so-
The Turbo S generates a stupendous 1,050Nm (775lb.ft) of pulling power and, when you activate Launch Control (standard across the range), you’ll be catapulted from 0-62mph in a face-altering 2.8 seconds. Even the range-entry RWD Taycan offers 402bhp with the standard 79.2kWh ‘Performance Battery’, or 470bhp with the optional 93.4kWh ‘Performance Battery Plus’. The AWD Taycan 4S offers 429bhp (523bhp on Overboost), puts out 640Nm (472lb.ft) of torque and deals with the 0-62mph sprint in 4 seconds flat. To ensure that the car really feels that quick, Porsche has engineered in a bit of motor whirr that you’ll hear under heavy throttle. As you might expect, the Porsche Taycan sets a fresh handling benchmark for what an all-electric performance car can be. Its race-derived technology delivers an 800-Volt power supply system that allows it to charge much quicker. Taycan pricing is exclusive, of course, but if you’re looking for electrified state-of-the-art, you’ve found it. By Wayne Gorrett

becomes the new President of Hampshire Gardens Trust
ampshire Gardens Trust is delighted to announce that Alan Titchmarsh MBE, has become its new President, taking over from Gilly Drummond OBE, who has been President since 2010. The Hampshire Gardens Trust is a charity dedicated to protecting and conserving the county’s heritage of designed landscapes. It campaigns on their behalf, undertakes research and conservation work, and encourages public appreciation and involvement. It is a membership organisation that relies on members and donors to support its work. The Trust enjoys a very close and supportive working relationship with Hampshire County Council. Like so many conservation organisations, the Hampshire Gardens Trust came into being in response to the very real threat to the survival and wellbeing of an important part of the nation’s heritage. In 1983 Hampshire was under significant threat from overdevelopment, and the conservation-minded County Council had determined to safeguard the county’s areas of high
landscape value. A report on Historic Parks and Gardens revealed some shocking facts: it indicated both the wealth of garden heritage in the county and also the decline, indeed the disappearance of many parks and gardens noted on various records and the impact of inappropriate development on sensitive sites. The Hampshire Gardens Trust brings together people from all backgrounds united by a passion for historic parks, gardens and designed landscapes and is determined to share its enthusiasm for these green spaces to inspire others and help protect Hampshire’s unique heritage for the benefit of the wider community for many years to come. The Hampshire Gardens Trust Chairman, Ted Wake, says, “As all Chairmen know, it is crucial to have the right President in place to help steer an organisation in the right direction at all times, and I am particularly delighted that Alan Titchmarsh has kindly agreed to take on this role. Alan is one of the most respected and popular gardening gurus in the UK, and the Hampshire Gardens Trust is very fortunate that he has signed up.
As Alan knows well, Gilly Drummond is highly respected in her own right as the key founding member of the HGT, and Gilly’s involvement in the organisation over the last 37 years has helped ensure that the HGT’s reputation in Hampshire and throughout England is second to none. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gilly on behalf of all members for her extraordinary work over the years. Her energy and enthusiasm sets a great example of what can be achieved - and with Alan’s help, I have no doubt that the HGT Trustees and members will be able to make Gilly very proud of the legacy that she has left.” Alan Titchmarsh, who joined as a Life Member of the Trust in 2012, says “My admiration for the work of the Hampshire Gardens Trust - and of Gilly Drummond’s achievements - knows no bounds and I am honoured and delighted to take over from her as President. Gilly has set the bar high, but I am confident that the Trust will continue to make its mark and demonstrate that the county of Hampshire is among the most blessed when it comes to the gardens it cherishes and the expertise and enthusiasm of those who do their bit as custodians of our enviable horticultural heritage. I’ll do my best to come up to scratch!” Gilly Drummond added, “This is a very joyful occasion for the Hampshire Gardens Trust, a new President, Alan Titchmarsh, whose track record on plants, gardens and above all, his ability to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to appreciate gardens, plants and green spaces is second to none”. Bathrooms Despite being one of the smaller rooms, Bathrooms have quickly become a focal point in the home; a place of relaxation, tranquillity and cleanliness. Bathrooms are the first place you visit when you wake up and one of the last before you sleep, so they deserve to be treated with the same love that other prized rooms inside your home receive, to set you in a good mood for the day ahead or relax your mind before bed.

Injecting Colour - Adding colour to a bathroom can be an excellent way to compliment eccentric stones and exciting tiles, bringing it all together with gold features; if you’ve ever visited the famous ‘Sketch’ in London then you’ll be able to gather inspiration from its modern quirky 18thcentury designs. Warm blues or pinks show off your personality and create an inviting place to get ready each morning. Details in the Dark - Dark colours are making a strong comeback in the interior design world. Perhaps one of the trendiest things of this season, dark features are no longer boring or intimidating, instead they can wonderfully contrast against feature colours and tiling.
A well-designed bathroom is a thing of beauty and can also boost the value of your home. From lighting to flooring, features to accessories, colour, texture and of course, the tubs, basins, sinks and showers – there’s a lot of elements to consider.

Introducing the colour
With so many products for haircare, beauty and hygiene, our bathrooms can often feel cluttered. Try utilising your storage space and reducing the amount of products you have on display. Only leave the products out that are appealing to the eye and help tie-in with the true sanctuary feel to provide a welcome antidote.
