We are well into the swing of Summer and in such, this issue is dedicated to getting your mind, body and soul in full holiday and relaxation mode. It’s time to enjoy the abundance of what this time of year brings. This issue features a round-up of wonderful features. Firstly, we dispel myths around Tequila. No longer a spirit for wobbly nights out, a new breed are amongst us and we have some excellent cocktail suggestions to get your evenings underway. On the other hand, some of us may use this time to detox and nurture our bodies. We take you on a journey to understanding facial peels, and how they can be easily used and applied at home. On the inside meanwhile, it’s all about juicing. We are bringing you up to speed on what you need to know and

giving you a classic breakdown of the green juice that’ll have your bodies topped up with nutrients for the months ahead. Gentlemen, it’s time to update your wardrobe. Some simple solutions from boat shoes to SPF will have you on your way. And finally, we take a look at local cooking schools and explore what is worth loving in the beautiful town of Emsworth. Feeling lucky? Your chance to win dinner, bed and breakfast at the beautiful Star & Garter Country Inn in East Dean, or perhaps a family ticket for a day out at Beaulieu – one of my personal favourites. I hope you find this issue a relaxing, insightful and welcoming read and enjoy the months ahead.

style insider WEDDING READY Among the list of wedding requirements such as presents and accommodation, finding an outfit can be one of the trickier tasks. Weddings are a wonderful celebration and one of life’s most joyous occasions, so looking stylish needn’t cause any stress. There are some definite musts when attending a wedding, such as steering well clear of white and wearing shoes comfy enough to dance all evening in. To help make it all a little easier, Beautiful South have compiled our top styling tips to stay event ready this season. While some styles are classic and never date, aim for your wedding fashion to be modern, relevant and celebrate the latest trends. This summer, popular and fashion-forward dresses include dainty slips, caped shoulders and tie-arounds. We are lucky enough to have plenty of fabulous independent boutiques within the surrounding area for all our shopping needs. Local boutique, Velvet and Rose, based in Petersfield, offers a range of feminine and floaty dresses designed to revamp your event wardrobe with the latest styles. With the weather getting warmer, opt for lighter clothing with thin materials - preferably satin or silk to keep on trend.

Weddings provide one of the few opportunities we get to go ‘’all out’’ and dress to impress. Why not use this chance to experiment with a new palette? Such as lavender and lime, or bubblegum pink and tangerine? Or why not try a new print? Such as wild florals or atzec patterns? Embrace your inner glamour and don’t hold back! Independent boutique Pushka in Chichester features a wide selection of charming, seasonal dresses that can help you dazzle at all occasions. And finally, accessories can make an outfit. The more impressive a bag, the better — try metallic accents and textured details such as crystals, sequins, tassels and pom-poms. Getting dressed up and celebrating the happy couple should be fun, after all!

Digestive health. Glowing skin. Achieving your The benefits of juicing are never ending. An easy way to get nutrients inside you, it’s the ideal way to top up your body with the goodness it needs. But we aren’t talking about orange, apple or fruit juices. High in sugar and often made from concentrate, these juices can often have more sugar than common soft drinks and do the opposite effects for your body. We are talking vegetable juices – dark green, potent and despite popular belief, can be tasty. Thanks to easy at home solutions such as a Nutribullet, it’s never been easier to blend and blitz a selection of ingredients within minutes. And, with an almost never ending list of benefits – including helping conditions such as thyroiditis, eczema, psoriasis, acne, constipation, chronic fatigue syndrome, blood sugar issues, migraines, acid reflux, high blood pressure, addictions, adrenal issues, gout, allergies, autoimmune conditions, and many more …it’s time to give it a go.

The trick with any good juice with health benefits is to balance the more bitter and strong green flavours with a mixture of sweetness and lemon. Also, the colder – the better. Blending with ice makes the experience much more enjoyable.

bunch curly kale roughly chopped large lemon peeled and quartered inch ginger peeled large cucumber cut into long strips large granny smith apples cored and sliced whole celery stalks

Simply wash and prep each of your ingredients, and apply in the order above. Add ice or chill after and you’re set to go. We all know how hard it is to get our recommended intake of vegetables – but this will be an easy way to do so, and you’ll notice the benefits in no time. You’ll also find the green juice to be an excellent snack due to the sheer amount of vegetables and goodness. However, buyer beware. The key to a successful juice is the amount of vegetable content. Don’t be tempted by common supermarket premade green juices. Look for yourself and carefully read the ingredients and sugar content. It will soon become quite obvious that these options, while tasting great, are heavily sugar influenced and not packed with the goodness you’ll need from options such as spinach, kale or cucumber.

Time to give it a try!

a day.

It’s officially summer and we are all focused on looking, and feeling, our absolute best. But how do we make sure our skin is in high performance mode? It’s time to wipe away the winter, dust off the spring and get onto bringing our best skin to the surface.

When we say the word peel we are immediately reminded of the aggressive and acidic notions of the 90s. No longer banished to expensive cosmetic clinics, nor something to be afraid of – the new peel represents simple, at home and gradual solutions that are less concentrated and allow us to undertake the process at a slower, more controlled and comfortable pace. Firstly, let’s talk benefits. Peeling has the following distinct advantages against techniques such as exfoliating:

1. Glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric and salicylic acid peel in a deep shade of red takes ten minutes to snap your skin into action. You’ll notice a visible difference. This is our favourite pick for cost, effectiveness and reduction of shine and oily skin over time. The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution: £7, The Ordinary.

• • • •

2. A safe bet in the middle of the budget with a creamier texture that relies on natural enzymes. This feels a little more luxe and nourishing to the skin and uses ingredients including papaya and pineapple. A great option for more sensitive or mature skin. Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel: £33, Elemis.

Different peels use different forms of light acids or enzymes to gently remove the top, dead layers of skin and penetrate the pores below.

3. Don’t have time to sit around and wait? Dr Dennis has your back. Easy to use, effective pads that sweep over the skin and apply a peptide milk and fruit acid that strips, firms and hydrates. Dr Dennis Gross Skincare, Media-spa peel, £60. Dr Dennis Gross.

Unclogging and releasing dirty pores Reduction of scaring, assistance of acne Brightening overall skin tone Enhancing the absorption of skin products such as serums • Treating pigmentation or discoloration • Relieving the depth of wrinkles or fine lines • Deeper exfoliation

an Outdoor Space that Breathes

with Botanicals... TAKING IT Our obsession with plants just keeps growing. Taking life from outside plant pots, tropical palmy and leafy prints are an inspiration for throughout the home. From wallpapers and bedsheets, to artwork and throws - we are revelling in this interiors trend. The uplifting botanical theme is a fantastic celebration of nature and creates the

feeling of bringing the outside, inside. Ideal for the summer season, tropical and natural prints can breathe new life into your home, no matter how big or small the room is. Offering a new way to reconnect with nature, the trend allows you to use the refreshing shades of the natural world and create a sense of serenity and peacefulness in your home.

Updating your home into a tropical oasis is not simply just about adding plants - although that definitely helps. By choosing the right colours, patterns and utilising your space correctly together can make your home a natural retreat. With so many plant prints and furniture items around, it is easy to adapt the look to your individual tastes and preferences. Beautiful South have compiled some suggestions on incorporating this trend into your living environment. It is all in the prints! From jungle palms to English garden greens, incorporating a whole wall of printed wallpaper or large patterned draped curtains creates the illusion of a greenhouse. For instance, Rebecca Barnes Designs Ltd based in Petersfield offers a delightful selection of wallpaper and drapes that will help bring a sense of nature indoors.

And finally, try exploring with a new palette this season. Jade and emerald greens mix incredibly well with pastel coloured hues such as peppercorn pink and creamy yellow. The combinations can create a fresh and eye-catching fusion. Neptune Interiors in Winchester feature a range of hues if you are looking for a new painting palette. With these suggestions combined, you will no longer need to travel far for your tropical, natural retreat. Enjoy the greenery of your own home this summer!

TA L K There are some drinks, spirits or particular drops that can bring back rather unwanted memories. That particular hangover or feeling the day after that lingers in the back of our mind and can be brought back all too soon with even a memory or scent of said concoction. Tequila typically is often one of those. But banish what you know. Forget what you remember. The ultrapremium Tequila industry is one of the fastest categories growing on a global scale thanks to a new breed of expertly crafted, balanced and quite frankly delicious spirits hailing from Mexico. We are recognising how versatile tequila can be in cocktails, or simply enjoyed neat as our friends across the pond in America love to consume it. Tequila is made from the blue agave plant. The juice extracted from the plants is fermented and distilled, producing the spirit. However, unlike some excellently priced wines, sparklings or even gin – typically with tequila it’s a case of you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. But when the time comes, perhaps a dinner party in the summer with friends, a Friday night gathering or merely knowing what to order when on a trip in coming months, here are 3 excellent tequilas to take note of – along with the all classic Margarita recipe that is sharp, delicious and the perfect accompaniment to a meal of fresh fish, or a side dish of guacamole.

Casamigos Blanco Tequila Patron XO Cafe Coffee Liqueur

El Jimador Reposado Tequila

This is George Clooney’s Tequila brand. Yes, you read correctly. It’s the hottest trend in Hollywood right now - but this Tequila is worth it. Crisp and clean with a long finish and hints of citrus, vanilla and sweet agave. A powerful finish and well balanced overall taste.

Patrón is one of the most renowned Tequila houses in the world, for a good reason. This blend is crafted with coffee liqueur that doesn’t come across too sweet. Whether sipping solo after dinner, enjoying as part of a Tequila Espresso Martini or other cocktails - it’s balanced, bitter taste is highly enjoyable.

Around £48,

Around £31,

A great option for cocktails, this pale gold Tequila is from the heart of the Jalisco region and aged in oak for two months to give a deeper, darker finish. A caramel aroma with notes of cinnamon spice and peppers provide a balance of sweet and sharp.

Around £20,

A Classic Margarita So, up for giving it a go? If you’re a Tequila newbie, we suggest enjoying it in a classic and loved Margarita. The Margarita was apparently invented in Mexico, when the dancer Majorie King requested a drink with Tequila, the only alcohol she was not highly allergic to!

2 shots of your chosen Tequila Shake the first 3 ingredients with 1 shot Cointreau triple sec ice, strain into a chilled, salted glass 1 shot freshly squeezed lime juice and garnish with lime Lots of ice. Keep it chilled, sip, savour and enjoy. If you’re feeling To garnish adventurous, mix up the garnish Salt to rim the glass or sweeten with a strawberry or Lime slices, for garnishing pineapple.

GROOMING The sun’s out more, and it’s important to shield our skin from UV rays whether out and about on the weekend or heading on holiday. Beautiful South | July/August 2019 | 27

Beaulieu’s CEO Russell Bowman tells Beautiful South about the fun and challenges of his diverse role.

s Managing Director of Beaulieu Enterprises, with responsibility for the Beaulieu and Buckler’s Hard visitor attractions and Beaulieu River, there is never a typical day for Russell. “The variety of the role can also make it quite frustrating but there is never time to get bored. I am able to juggle the different parts of the business by having a good team of managers, who are all experts in their specialisms.” Beaulieu holds so many interesting and special events, and Russell spoke about his particular favourites. “I love Beaulieu’s vibrant Hot Rod & Custom Drive-In Day because of the huge variety and colour of the vehicles it brings. As this event is always held on Father’s Day, it is not just for car enthusiasts but also a fun show for all the family.” “As Beaulieu’s biggest and longest-running event, International Autojumble has a worldwide following, and many of the exhibitors and visitors have become our friends. I talk each year with a Belgium car club which has been bringing a coach party for over 30 years.” When asked what his own dream car would be, he was very clear. “Nothing exotic! If I had the time – and a garage – I would like to own an early 1950s Chevrolet 3100 pick-up. I see a lot at our Hot Rod & Custom Drive-In Day but would prefer an original, rather than a customised model.”

back over 800 years. The Montagu family has held custodianship of the estate for centuries and everything we do builds upon those foundations, with genuine reasons for everything to be here.” He is particularly happy with Beaulieu’s objective to invest in the long-term in the estate and preserve it for future generations, rather than just achieving a profit and Russell has seen many positive developments and changes. “While the core remains the same, we have achieved an enormous amount with many improvements, constantly adding new features, as well as giving a new lease of life to traditional ones. We have developed the World of Top Gear, the Secret Army exhibition and the Victorian flower and kitchen gardens during that time, and also managed the smooth transition from Edward, Lord Montagu to the next generation.”

Russell recalled some of his most memorable days at Beaulieu. “Edward, Lord Montagu staged a wonderful jazz picnic to celebrate his 80th birthday. It was such a memorable event because I share his taste in music and we were lucky to see performances by Humphrey Lyttleton, Acker Bilk and George Melly. Also for the Beaulieu River, it was a particularly proud day when Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour recently became The Yacht Harbour Association’s Coastal Marina of the Year” Russell also spoke about the different aspects of this renowned visitor destination that draws people back again and again.“What makes the Beaulieu and Buckler’s Hard attractions, as well as the river and estate, unique, is that we are based on real history which dates

Russell’s role also involves working with a lot of interesting and sometimes well known people. “I have been lucky enough to work with racing legend Sir Stirling Moss and veteran F1 commentator Murray Walker on several occasions because of his relationship with Beaulieu. I also became The Stig’s chaperone for our opening of the World of Top Gear, when photographers were trying to use their flashes to see who he really was.”

One of Russell’s ‘off the wall’ moments was working on breaking The World Record for the longest line of toy cars, with 24,189 snaked around the museum and its grounds covering 1.91km. The cars were later sold to raise money for Naomi House Hospice. A ticket to Beaulieu includes all of the attractions - the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Palace House, Secret Army exhibition, 13th century Beaulieu Abbey and the grounds and gardens. or call 01590 612345.

Lesley Eaton is former Ladies Captain at Petersfield Golf Club, and she's on a mission to persuade newcomers to give the sport a go. "Like a lot of people, I started to play when the wear and tear from other sport began to take its toll," she said. "Most wait until they have retired until they take it up. I wanted to start while I was still able to swing freely, to give myself the chance to be able to play at a decent level.

and woodpeckers always about. Today a stoat ran across the practice ground! You can genuinely play with anyone of any ability and age both competitively or for fun, as the handicap system takes account of this, so you don't have to adjust your game.

"I chose golf partly because it was an activity I could play with my husband, but also without him, when he was working weekends. There is always someone to play with!

“I can't think of another sport like this. Because of the handicap system you can continue to play competitively into your old age. We have several people in their 80s who still play and some are still very good. You can play as a single player, single sex pairs, or mixed pairs. You can play for fun, in club competitions, county competitions, or friendly matches against others.

"I like the personal challenge. It can be the most frustrating game (when you 'thin' a chip across the green into a bunker) and the most rewarding (when the shot feels effortless, as you clip the ball off the fairway, it soars in a perfect arc and lands exactly where it was supposed to).

IT'S ACTUALLY VERY GOOD EXERCISE – FOR THOSE WHO LIKE STATISTICS, IT IS ESTIMATED YOU WALK MORE THAN 12,500 STEPS AND BURN MORE THAN 1500 CALORIES. “We play in all weathers (except thunder and lightning) with our wet weather gear on and rain dripping off our noses sometimes. "You get to appreciate the changing seasons and the wildlife. At PGC we keep a wildlife log. We seem to have a couple of pairs of resident red kites

"In January 2019, new rules came into play. These were designed to speed up the game, and simplify the rules, which were unnecessarily complicated. When I was young, golf was for 'posh' people and golf clubs were stuffy places. Yes, if you're a member of a club there is a dress code out on the course and in the clubhouse, but it is more relaxed than it used to be. There is golf etiquette to be followed, but most 'rules' are based on common decency and general politeness. A lot of clubs, including PGC offer a flexible membership. You don't get all the benefits of full membership, but it is an economical way to belong to a golf club, get a handicap and play a quality course. Golf is changing. "People lead busy lives, and some haven't got the time to play 18 holes of golf. At PGC we always offer weekly nine-hole competition for ladies. If you're considering taking up golf, my advice (apart from go for it!) would be: Start off by having

lessons, because it's challenging to undo bad habits. Be kind to yourself and don't expect too much too soon; golf takes time! "Join a club that encourages and supports beginners if you are just starting out. At PGC we have a fab informal programme for supporting new ladies." Petersfield Golf Club has two courses: the main one just off the A3 at Tankerdale Lane, with its modern clubhouse, and South Petersfield which is in the town centre, opposite the Heath. The 2019 Ladies Open Team event will take place on Tuesday, August 6th. There is a Mixed Open on Sunday, August 4th. Lesley Eaton is former Ladies Captain at Petersfield Golf Club, and she's on a mission to persuade newcomers to give the sport a go.

Peter Pan or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. Written by J.M Barrie in 1904, this is the original story of the infamous Peter Pan and the adventures he has in Neverland. Peter would fly to London every night to listen to the bedtime stories that Mrs Darling told to her children. One night when Mr and Mrs Darling were out at a party, Peter snuck into the Darling Children’s nursery to steal

/ MOTORING rear passenger space, with plenty of leg room and an unusually wide interior. With the rear seatbacks in the upright position, the boot of the i20 can hold an impressive 326 litres which makes it one of the largest in this class. The i20 Play Edition features a higher level of standard equipment than the existing SE trim level upon which it is based. Additional kit over the SE includes 16inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, a seven-inch touchscreen navigation system and rear privacy glass. One of the most significant upgrade changes from last year comes if you choose the delightful turbocharged three-pot 1.0-litre T-GDi engine which can now send its 99bhp through either the five-speed manual gearbox or a new seven-speed auto transmission. Other petrol engines include a 1.2-litre with 74hp or 83hp. The Hyundai i20 is surprisingly comfortable to drive, given its diminutive size. Around town, the i20 is very easy to manoeuvre thanks to its light steering, and good visibility and the rear parking camera and front parking sensors fitted to the Play Edition make it a doddle to park.

By Wayne Gorrett In early April 2019, Hyundai added a special ‘Play’ edition to its current i20 line-up and I recently spent a week with H3 HYU and made some notes… Now available only as a five-door hatchback, the Hyundai i20 has been styled rather conservatively since its introduction in 2008, but the chiselled lines of this second generation are more appealing. The refreshed i20 features new front and rear bumpers, new boot lid which now also accommodates the rear number plate which has been relocated from the lower portion of the pre-facelift bumper. The car also gets new alloy wheel designs and a pair of redesigned tail lamps. Changes to the interior of the 2018 model include the addition of a new infotainment system that now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

YOU SIT QUITE LOW IN THE I20 BUT FINDING A GOOD DRIVING POSITION IS FAR FROM CHALLENGING. The new touchscreen system and dashboard are logically laid out and within easy reach of the driver. The i20 is one of the roomiest in the supermini class, with enough leg and headroom to accommodate tall drivers with ease. In the back, again the i20 is right up there with the best in class in terms of

On the motorway, you’ll only hear a slight burble from the 1.0-litre engine, and there is very little road noise from the rubber underneath. However, door mirrors and windscreen produce a noticeable amount of wind noise at 70mph. The i20 is available with a host of hi-tech safety aids, including lanedeparture warning and lane keep assist as well as tyre-pressure monitoring. Every i20 comes with six airbags, electronic stability control and an emergency stop signal. Smart styling, comfortable, well-equipped and easy to drive, the Hyundai i20 makes for a compelling proposition in a very competitive arena.

Emsworth oyster fleet, operating as one of the London’s top oyster suppliers. Although the production of oysters is now much less, the town’s values still revolve around its homegrown pleasures. Emsworth is home to a variety of independent businesses that flourish throughout. Examples include The Blue Bell Inn, a popular British pub which has been owned by the Babb family since 1994 and H. H. Treagust & Sons, a family butchers wellknown throughout Hampshire for their excellent sausages.

Up until somewhat 100 years ago, the town was most famous for its oyster fleet, operating as one of the London’s top oyster suppliers.

In the early 13th century, tucked away on the shore of Chichester Harbour, the charming town of Emsworth was born. Nestled between the sea and the South Downs, this town is particularly popular among fishermen, sailors, walkers and food lovers. Its impressive harbour boasts a rich history of fishing and boat building, which is still greatly appreciated by residents, visitors and of course members of the two sailing clubs. Up until somewhat 100 years ago, the town was most famous for its

ysters had been fished in Emsworth for many centuries. In 1788. It is recorded that over 7,000 bushels of native Emsworth oysters, with a value of £1,500, were raked and dredged by a dozen master fishermen. The oyster industry flourished, and the fishery was at its height during the last decade of the 19th century. In 1901 between 300 and 400 people, out of a population of some 3,000, were working in the Emsworth oyster trade, either for Foster or the other fishing masters, or engaged in the sale of oysters. Emsworth’s important oyster industry on which so many relied for their living was devastated by the great oyster scare of 1902 when guests at a Winchester banquet became ill, and the Dean of Winchester died from typhoid attributed to eating Emsworth oysters at that event. Following an inspection of the oyster beds, gross sewage contamination was identified, and the sale of Emsworth oysters immediately slumped. Giles Babb chef patron of The Blue Bell Inn, Emsworth has produced this traditional Steak & oyster pie recipe. Oysters were once a part of a staple diet rich in nutrients and minerals, cheap and readily available they were often used to bulk out meat dishes.

• 1kg/2lb 2oz diced beef skirt (Treagust Butchers Stock this) • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 50ml/2floz local rapeseed oil • 175g/6oz smoked bacon, cut into large lardons • 125g/4½oz onion, chopped • 125g/4½oz carrots, peeled and diced • 75g/2½oz celery, peeled and diced • 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled, chopped • 25g/1oz plain flour • 500ml/17½fl oz Wodehouse ale, The Emsworth Brewhouse • 2 litres/3½ pints fresh beef stock • 1 large bouquet garni (bay leaves, parsley and thyme, tied together with kitchen string) • 12 large fresh oysters, shucked (Johnson’s Fish Or seasonally from Fresh from the boat Emsworth) • 250g/9oz ready-rolled Shortcrust pastry • 1 free-range egg, plus 1 egg yolk, beaten together with a pinch of salt

METHOD 1. Season the beef with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat a large pan until hot, then add the oil and fry the beef for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned all over. 2. Add the smoked bacon and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, then add the onion, celery, carrots and garlic. Fry for 2-3 minutes, then add the flour and stir well to prevent any lumps from forming. Cook for a further minute. 3. Pour in the Wodehouse ale, bring to the boil and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until reduced by half., then add to the pan along with the bouquet garni. Bring to the boil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then reduce to a simmer and cook for approximately two hours, or until the beef is tender. Remove the pan from the heat and set

aside to cool. Discard the bouquet garni. and add the oysters, folding them gently into the beef mixture Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Roll out the shortcrust pastry until it is 3mm thick, Grease and line a large pie dish with the shortcrust pastry or individual ones if preferred. Spoon the beef mixture in. Then cut out pieces of pastry large enough to fit over the top of the pie dishes as a lid, with a bit of overhang. Crimp the edges with your fingers, securing the pastry to the dish. Prick the surface of the pastry with a fork, then brush with the beaten egg. Place the pies onto a baking tray and bake in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the pastry is goldenbrown and crisp. Serve the pies with mash, any excess sauce and seasonal local vegetables.

A FUSION OF CULTURE, TRADITION AND MODERN DAY TECHNOLOGY MAKE JAPAN ONE OF THE FAR EAST’S MOST FASCINATING AND BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES... Japan is a land of almost shocking contrasts: 21st century skyscrapers jostle for space with wooden houses and grand palaces, gourmet restaurants sit alongside the rituals of the tea ceremony, and Shinto shrines and atmospheric temples are within touching distance of karaoke bars and neon signs. The destination is a heady mix of tradition and modernity in almost every corner of this fascinating country. Where else in the world will you find vast, new technological developments and ancient customs so close together? The starting point for most visitors, Japan’s unique capital, Tokyo truly takes your breath away. Whether it’s the bright lights, skyscrapers and hectic buzz or the fantastic food and friendly locals, there’s a world of options to draw you in and something new to be found at every turn. Narita Airport is incredibly well connected to the city, and Tokyo’s excellent public transport network is the easiest, most cost-effective way to get around. As you’d expect, the trains run like clockwork and timing is to the second! Tokyo’s huge fish market is famous worldwide and is a must-see attraction. Packed with traders selling prime cuts of fish, this massive market is the largest in the world and is incredibly busy. Browsing the stalls is a great way to get a feel for city life. Other top activities include a visit to Senso-Ji Temple (the oldest in Tokyo) and Ginza, the highend shopping district packed with luxurious department stores. There are hundreds of options for eating out in Tokyo, and both western and local cuisines are widely available, with some of the best restaurants found amidst the high-rise skyscrapers way above the street level. Enjoy panoramic views and traditional rice wine known as Japanese Sake at the top of the Skytower. To the west of the capital lies the Hakone National Park with the magnificent Mount Fuji at its heart. Take an emotional journey to Hiroshima, one of Japan’s most famous destinations, devastated by the atomic bomb attack of 1945. Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo for an incredibly fast, efficient and comfortable journey – you can even get a few pictures of Mount Fuji along the way! With its wide boulevards and friendly locals, Hiroshima has a laid back ambience and is really welcoming. One of the must-see attractions is the Peace Memorial Park, built to honour the victims of the atomic bomb attack.

Exploring the many museums and memorials, you realise how Hiroshima has completely rebuilt itself from scratch, with only the original A-bomb dome now left as a reminder of what once happened there. While Japan’s former capital, the ancient city of Kyoto, is a modern city, this is the place where your view of traditional Japan will be fulfilled. Completely walkable and packed with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this beautiful city is an ideal place to unearth Japan’s history. Browse the shops and markets of Higashiyama’s cobbled streets, explore the famous Gion Geisha district and visit several of the stunning shrines including the famous Silver Leaf temple, Golden Pavillion and the iconic Nijo Castle. Bustling Osaka is Japan’s commercial centre, which bursts with eclectic street culture, vast underground shopping malls and futuristic landmarks. Attractions include Osaka Castle, offering amazing views from the top. The city is also fantastic for foodies, boasting many superb restaurants and cheap food stalls. Further insights into Japan’s traditional side are found in the Japanese Alps, a scenically stunning area with snow-capped mountains, villages, wildlife and hot springs. Even the best cooks can have their culinary disasters - the writer of this piece has too many to list here, including the incident of the steamed pudding that resembled cement and initially refused to release itself from the dish, until the dish broke! The neighbourhood birds were offered the pudding and even they refused to risk their beaks chipping away at the solid mass. In recent times I have realised that I can pick up a few useful tips from some of the TV chefs, skilled friends and my mother - who always said ‘practice makes perfect’. But after decades of catering for friends and family, there is still something missing from my cooking, so I feel the only thing I can do to improve is to take myself off to a cookery school. My research into cookery schools in Hampshire threw up a mind-blowing range of options that seem to cover British and most international cuisines, vegetarian, vegan, nutritional cookery, gluten free and dairy free courses. A number of the cookery schools in Hampshire are run by some of the most renowned top chefs,

Many of the cookery courses are located in beautiful places in the county, either to spend half a day at a class or longer courses of several days, with some offering accommodation as part of the package. who have worked in highly acclaimed restaurants and hotels in the UK and abroad. Many of the cookery courses are located in beautiful places in the county, either to spend half a day at a class or longer courses of several days, with some offering accommodation as part of the package. The schools range from intimate home setting kitchens to industry standard kitchens for larger groups, with many Hampshire hotels offering courses in their own cookery schools. There seems to also be an excellent social aspect to learning to cook with others, which can add an element of fun. Some of the cookery schools offer group events for children, teens, family groups, hen parties and even corporate team building events for staff or to entertain clients. There are even cookery courses for those who are leaving home for the first time to go off to university. The influence of television cookery programmes including Junior Bake Off and

Masterchef Junior have inspired children and teenagers to start cooking, with specialist cookery courses for those age groups, that are fun to do as a group to celebrate a birthday or end of the school year. There seems to be a cookery course for everyone from the total novice to the experienced amateur cook. From one-to-one tuition to group courses, with so many options to choose from, with some cookery schools able to design specific courses for individuals or groups. Unlike my mother and a number of my friends, I am not a gifted cook, but I adore good food and entertaining friends and want to improve my knowledge and skills. The cookery school route seems like a great way to achieve that. The opportunity to learn to cook dishes I would never tackle on my own, to build my culinary confidence with the help of experts sounds like a good idea, and it also looks like a lot of fun!

Natural skincare from the seaside Southsea Bathing Hut is making waves By Samantha Worsey, founder of Southsea Bathing Hut

rom handmade soaps on a local market stall to a full range of cruelty-free skincare products in a boutique shop, the last four years have been quite a journey. Back when I used to make soap bars as fun little Christmas presents, I never dreamed I’d turn my hobby into a successful business. Yet here I am. My small family company has grown into our very own shop - Portsmouth’s home of natural skincare, with its own workshop and treatment room. How did we get here? Since 2015 I’ve developed all kinds of products for face, hands and body - scrubs, oils, balms, moisturisers, cleansers… whatever your skin needs. We still make everything ourselves, by hand, on the premises. That’s rarer than you might think. The norm is for small and mid-scale producers to hire big companies to make their products and put a label on. That wasn’t for us.

Every product is refillable at our Southsea shop, and everything is cruelty-free, right the way through the supply chain. I want us to be accountable and connected to our products. Not just because of what we want them to do for your skin, and the sensory experience of using them (both of which take real attention to detail), but also because I want us to know everything about the environmental impact from where and how each ingredient was grown, to how the final product is packaged. All our packaging is recyclable. Every product is refillable at our Southsea shop, and everything is crueltyfree, right the way through the supply chain. I feel so lucky to work with beautiful, high-quality ingredients. It’s lovely to be surrounded by herbs and botanical extracts at work, including those I’ve picked myself - from juicy blackberries and perfect rosehips, to aromatic rosemary and the wonderful, conditioning seaweed we harvest. Our products have always been inspired by where we live, which is why I like to use seaweed and other coastal botanicals in products including our international award-winning, premium organic facial range, the Pure Marine Bio Essence Collection.

We’re totally natural, with nothing to hide. That’s why our workshop is open to view from the street. If you’re passing, stop and watch us at work. If you want to go a step further, you can book onto workshops and spa parties in the same space - or have a luxurious private treatment. These are all fun and fulfilling experiences, but also enlightening and inspiring. Few purchases are more intimate than skincare. It pays to be educated and think about your choices holistically - how are they made, why are they right for you, how do they complement your lifestyle? You can consider the impact of your skincare - not just on yourself, but on the world. In our apothecary on Southsea’s Albert Road, we’re always happy to help you do exactly that.

It’s lovely to be surrounded by herbs and botanical extracts at work, including those I’ve picked myself. So how did we get from a market to the high street? By making products, your skin will love, with all our love. 2&2c Albert Rd, Southsea, Portsmouth PO5 2SH.

We all have our passions, but often there is no greater love than the love we bestow on the special animals we have in our lives. The Oglesby family, with their herd of beautiful huacaya alpacas, plus dog Jazz and Marmalade the cat, have devoted their last twenty-one years to lovingly creating the perfect environment for their four legged ‘family’. Set with the rolling countryside of the South Downs National Park, the Oglesby’s farm at Droxford is home to the Meon Valley Alpacas, with the clear chalk stream waters of the River Meon just half a mile from the farm, giving their alpaca herd its name. Their twenty-two acre farm has stables within a Newmarket Ring and was originally purchased for the family’s horses, and it suits their herd of alpacas very well. For those who are fascinated by alpacas and would like to know more about these adorable creatures, Karen Oglesby runs Alpaca Experience Mornings from £40. “Alpacas always make me smile,” commented Karen. “And they make everyone smile as they are intelligent, inquisitive and very different to any other animal. They are not really petting animals, but will accept you close to them if you are calm and peaceful around them.”

Spending a morning with Karen and the herd is the key to being accepted and enjoying a close contact experience. “Our visitors all have the love of animals in common and enjoy seeing how alpacas are so very different to any other animal. The experience is so much more than just alpaca walking, with time spent tending to the herd, perhaps seeing a birth or helping with the various husbandry tasks, or halter-training the weanlings, getting them used to handling ready for the shows. The morning will probably include taking an alpaca for a walk around the woods and sharing experiences over a cup of tea and biscuits.” The Oglesby family has bred and raised many award winning alpacas and Karen, with husband Peter and daughter Rebecca, enjoy taking them to shows. “We have great fun meeting up with other breeders, sharing experiences and making new contacts.” The increase in popularity of alpacas prompted Karen to also offer Private Beginners Courses on all aspects of alpaca ownership. They also welcome visits from schools and colleges for a £2 - £5 donation per person to go to their chosen Peruvian charity The Quechua Benefit.

ALPACA SCULPTURES Karen’s love of her alpacas has extended into her creative life as a highly talented sculptor. Her life size sculpture of alpaca heads have been inspired by her prize winning females in the herd. These sculptures are for sale in bronze and bronze resin, as well as her ceramic sculpture of young alpacas. For more information visit:

Information and Guidance Have you ever considered keeping bees in your garden but are not sure how to get started? This editorial should help you on your first step...

Starting out Before starting out, it will be necessary to think about the size of your garden, the possibility of objections from your neighbours, the safety of children and pets, and so on. If it is not feasible to keep your bees at home there is usually a farmer who will let you keep your bees in his field.

Plight of the Honey Bee

Portsmouth and District Beekeeping Association (PDBKA) are intending to have stands this year at various shows, our programme will indicate when and where. There will be experienced beekeepers there to answer any questions, a display of beekeeping equipment, honey and wax products for sale and you might even like to try your hand at making a rolled beeswax candle. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to handle live bees at the show due to health and safety regulations. However, we will have an observation hive at most of our shows enabling you to view the bee’s at work and spot the queen. Clothing is provided, it also allows you to use different types of hives helping to evaluate the kind of hive which suits you. There are lots of books on beekeeping; also the internet is a mine of information.

Recently there has been extensive publicity in the media regarding the global problems facing the honey bee. This has raised people’s awareness of this fascinating and extremely interesting insect. The more people who take up beekeeping and who are well informed will go a long way to preserving this fascinating, industrious insect. Most of the food we eat is directly attributable to the honey bees pollinating activities.

Stings As a Beekeeper, you will be stung at some point; however, this is not as drastic as it seems. Bees are usually quite gentle when treated with respect. The more experience you gain, the more confident you become.

New Bee The first step to becoming a “New Bee” is to join a local beekeeping association or attend some meetings as a guest. Dip your toe in the honey. If you feel it would appeal to you, then the next step would be a short, but informative course on beekeeping basics carried out by an experienced beekeeper from the association. The association can guide you through the early part of setting up your apiary as there is a little more to it than just buying a hive and popping it in the garden. All associations have experienced members who can mentor you during the early days and give you support.

If you would like some more information on beekeeping or would like the attend the monthly meeting of the Portsmouth Beekeepers Association which is held on the last Thursday of each month in Portchester, please contact Mike Cotton (Chairman) on 02392 412758 or 07794645388.
