This year especially has seen a huge rise in digital and social media usage. SYMPTOMS & SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT DIGITAL FATIGUE

F

atigue, as we know, is the overall feeling of tiredness or a lack of energy that is often traced back to our routines and behaviours. A new topic of discussion focuses on digital fatigue, who many are not even aware exists. Those days when your eyes feel dry, that dull headache you can’t seem to shift, neck strains and poor posture – those can all be signs you are suffering from digital fatigue, which can affect our bodies mentally and physically. According to The Sleep Foundation, an excessive amount of screen time can affect the body’s levels of Melatonin, often referred to as the sleep hormone. The blue light emitted by screens including phones, laptops and televisions can reduce the amount of Melatonin that is produced

and in turn, disrupt the quality and duration of your sleep, upsetting our cardiac rhythm; a key factor in digital fatigue. Blue light from our devices has also been found to cause slow yet serious degradation of our skin’s structure. Too much screen exposure can lead to more fine lines and wrinkles and a loss of plumpness. Recent studies also show that blue light has a greater ability than UV light to penetrate our skin and could be just as, if not, more active in causing pigmentation across our skin.

1. Be mindful of your screen time – allow plenty of breaks away from your TV, phone and laptop. Incorporate gentle movements and stretches to keep you nimble and try to factor in short walks to get as much fresh air as you can. Many devices now offer features that send alerts when you have reached your daily screen time limit and allow you to change the screen display to a warmer, more yellow hue to reduce eye strain. For when you need to use a screen, you can purchase a blue light screen protector for your devices or invest in glasses that block out blue light altogether. 2. Build a consistent skincare regime – packed with antioxidants that nourish, calm and revitalise dull-looking skin to combat the effects of daily blue light exposure. Vitamin E and C contain powerful anti-ageing properties which help uncover a more youthful appearance. If you don’t already use them (and we highly advised you do) SPF creams and serums with zinc oxide protect our skin from harsh UV rays and blue light emissions that we are exposed to every day.

Incorporate gentle movements and stretches to keep you nimble and try to factor in short walks to get as much fresh air as you can. Therefore, as we steer towards a progressively digital world and continue to live in lockdown that has us glued to our screens, we offer some tips to help you reduce your screen time and exposure to blue light, in hopes to avoid the feeling of digital fatigue:

3. Master the night-time wind-down routine – consciously set aside time in the evening to wind down before heading to bed, ideally 1-2 hours. Try to steer away from digital devices during this time, to allow your mind, eyes and body to completely relax and de-stress. Fill your ‘Me Time’ by reading a book, writing a journal of what went well during the day, listening to a relaxation playlist or submerging in a hot bath with bath salts and essential oils designed to soothe, such as lavender and chamomile.

There is something special and comforting about a room which brings you both nostalgia and style. From brass radiators and antique drawers to sleek armchairs and statement lighting, merging a time period with contemporary is exciting to create. Antiques Antiques are the backbone of any vintage homes. Regardless of which decade is your personal favourite, they are the key pieces that help cement the vintage feel in your design. As a rule, if you don’t think the piece will stand up to daily wear and tear, keep looking for a more efficient option. When selecting antiques for your home, pay special attention to the weight and sturdiness of the piece. Heaviness is a sign that the antique was made from real, natural materials. When you do find antiques that fit the bill, make this the focal point of the room. Putting a true antique into this role will help set the tone for the rest of your room. Textures Welcoming a variety of textures such as leather, faux-fur, wool, silk, and linen will help to create an exciting and unique living environment. Whilst worn and aged pieces are beautiful and historic, it’s important not to go overboard and mix them alongside smoother and unblemished textures. For example, place a mirrored tray on top of a worn, timber coffee table. Or, a velvet cushion on-top of a distressed leather chair. Introducing such textures creates a more dynamic style in your home. Beautiful South is particularly enjoying textured lighting at the moment. Walls Adorning your walls with pictures, paintings, and mirrors can be a brilliant way to achieve this interior look. Why not try adding a display of images on one of your walls, mixing and matching different bronze rimmed frames and ornate dusty copper frames. Here you can frame some of your most cherished memories for all to see. Pairing these against a contemporary coloured wall such as a pastel pink or olive green will create the perfect contrast. Or, decorating with artwork and paintings lends the opportunity to merge different styles. andy Hickson is certainly no ordinary woman, as a tall attractive (6ft) blond with a gregarious and warm personality, she makes her mark on everyone she encounters. AN 18TH-CENTURY VILLAGE PUB SET IN THE HEART OF THE SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK

T

he Star & Garter Country Inn is a charming flint-and-brick pub in village of East Dean. We arrived at the Star & Garter in the evening and as we stepped inside, we were greeted by host Will and Manager Jim who reassuringly advised us how the pub operates within the new government guidelines. The pubs interior instantly set a great atmosphere with its twinkly lights, church benches and lit stove; creating a comfortable, cosy setting from the outset. We were shown to one of three 3 spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated rooms within the pub which are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness. Our large bedroom kept a grand king-sized 4 poster bed, lovely bathroom with a freestanding big bath (perfect for a relaxing soak), Nespresso coffee machine, serving Hampshire roasted Mozzo coffee, and bottled water. Aligning with the pub’s ethos, the amenities inside each room were all local and eco-friendly, including sustainable facial tissues and loo roll and natural toiletries from New Forest Aromatics. Each room had a distinctive character with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. I greatly appreciated the excellent extras touches that each room offered; specifically,

the picnic hamper which can be organised as a packed lunch for when you are out exploring the surrounding deer-populated woods. Maps and walking routes are also provided with a list of attractions to see and do. After a quick spruce up, we made our way to our dinner reservation. The outstanding menu reflected the pubs love for seasonal British produce. The pub and its sister brewhouses and restaurants, who trade under the Thomas Babb Brewing Company, all strive to reduce food miles with a ‘field to fork’ approach and design their seasonal dishes using, whenever possible, the best local ingredients.

we feasted upon a Butcher’s cut steak, cooked to absolute perfection. The fresh fish is sourced from Fresh from the Boat Emsworth and vegetables from Richard Foot in Chidham. Goodwood Estate, M R Starr of Emsworth and Southdowns Venison provide the Meat and Game and the Dairy and Cheese celebrates local producers including Hampshire Cheese, IOW Cheese and Bookham Harrison Farms. I was so pleased to see my favourite Rosé, AIX Rosé 2018 Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, served by the glass as my partner enjoyed a pint of local Ale. For starter, we enjoyed delicious Braised Short

Rib of Beef, served with celeriac remoulade and watercress for £7. The grilled Sardines Escabeche for £7.50 were sat upon endive and horseradish – ‘so good, I could have eaten them all again’. For mains, we feasted upon a Butcher’s cut steak, sold at market price and cooked to absolute perfection. This came with portobello mushroom, slow-roasted tomato, hand-cut chips and the option of peppercorn sauce, blue cheese, chimichurri or garlic butter, which we opted for. The taste of the pineapple glazed Confit Pork Belly was truly outstanding. For £16.50, this was accommodated with creamed potato, beetroots, carrots and finished with a red wine reduction. As avid cheese-lovers, we chose to share the Four Cheese Board for dessert and a glass of Taylors Late-Bottled Vintage Port. At, £9.50 this board contained local cheeses, quince jelly, grapes, celery and rye crackers – a delicious end to an absolutely exquisite meal. After a peaceful night’s sleep, we lined our stomachs with a breakfast of smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough toast and a full English breakfast, which were included in our stay. As we left to head home, we admired the pubs’ picturesque surroundings of the famous Goodwood Estate. It’s hard to find a flaw for The Star & Garter; an idyllic, charming and welcoming place for those seeking a traditional, luxurious country getaway; to enjoy a delicious meal or a relaxing overnight stay.

R

other Valley is a family-run farm and traditional butchery who aim to reconnect the local community with high-welfare, fresh and tasty food from the farm and other various local artisan producers. Based in the village of Rogate near Petersfield, Hampshire, the farms online butchers shop sells some of the finest, free-range, grass-fed and ethically-raised meat in the UK. Farmer and Business Owner, Shon, was born on the farm, the very house he still lives in now. After graduating from the Royal Berkshire College of Agriculture, Shon came back to Rother Valley to

set up the first line of Aberdeen Angus beef to sell to Waitrose. Since it began, part of the farms’ remit is to help preserve the environment and to date, is the biggest conversion the Soil Association has seen, with much of the grazing land working as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) or an ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area) and Organic. The farm animals are grazed on the Thorney Island marshlands which is high tier environmental ground, SSSI and supports the bird reserve on the island and at Chichester Harbour. Through the management and keeping this ground organic, the farm helps improve the island’s biodiversity including ground nesting birds and many unusual plant species. The farm’s free-range, high welfare meat is available via their online butchers’ shop, weekly Farm Market and in local restaurants and pubs.

Safety is also paramount to the farm. In line with the current restrictions, the farm now offers a contact-free delivery service within 23 miles of the farm offices and a zero physical contact click & collection service. In recent months, the farm launched their Farm Gate Farmers’ Market; an open-air, socially distanced market which is COVID-safe and held every Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm. Initially set up as a way to support the business, local enterprises, and the community during the COVID-19 lockdown, the successful market now offers a variety of products from local suppliers including an artisan Coffee and Cake stand, Hand-cut flowers, Bread, Pastries, Antiques, Chutneys, Fruit and Vegetables, Milk, Cheese and Ice Cream.

Locals are invited to attend the farms’ courtyard and barn every weekend to browse the fresh and seasonal produce. A stay at the historical Hotel

in the heart of Windsor Beautiful South’s Lily Lloyd enjoys a night at a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Windsor… The grand Castle Hotel sits elegantly within the quintessentially English town of Windsor, in the Royal County of Berkshire. As my friend Arabella and I made our way to our stay, we were amazed by the rich history that surrounds the hotel, including the famous Windsor Castle and St. George’s Chapel, which are both a short walk away. The hotel is steeped in fascinating history and has been dedicated to exceptional hospitality for more than 500 years. Dating back to 1528, the property began life as the Mermaid Inn before it became one of the finest boutique hotels in the area. The property was fully renovated in 2015 and Castle Hotel restored and modernised the interiors to pay homage to its rich Georgian history with a refined take on contemporary design. Upon arrival, a parking space was kindly reserved for us within the hotel’s car park. However, if you’re travelling by train, the town has excellent

connections to London Heathrow and direct trains from London Waterloo and London Paddington. Reassuringly, the hotel holds an ALLSAFE label verified by Clifton and hand sanitiser was provided as we entered the hotel which operates with a one-way system, as well as a ‘Protection Kit’ for guests in each room; giving confidence that measures are in place to keep COVID-safe. Once we checked in, we were greeted with fresh fruit and pastry treats inside our room. The hotel’s 108-rooms and suites sophisticated taupe décor is accented with original features, modern cuttingedge technologies and amenities including luxurious White Company toiletries. After a day of exploring the historical town and building a hearty appetite, we were eager to make our dinner reservation at the hotel’s highly

regarded Marco Pierre White Restaurant. For starter, Arabella was excited to see her favourite French Onion Soup on the menu for £7.95. I enjoyed the Wheeler’s Crispy Calamari for £9.50 which came with sauce tartare and fresh lemon. For mains, we both decided to feast upon steak because after all, you cannot attend a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and not order a steak! I opted for an 8oz Ribeye Steak for £27.50 whilst my friend chose a 6oz Fillet Steak pricing at £27.95. All cuts came from the finest quality grass-fed Campbell Brothers beef and are served with roasted vine tomatoes and chunky chips with an add-on option of Bearnaise or Peppercorn sauce for an extra £3.50. We both also shared a green side salad with our favourite truffle dressing priced at £3.50. To complement our meal, we shared a bottle of Los Romeros, Chile Sauvignon Blanc which cost £27. Dessert presented us with many sweet options. After some debating, we went for Mr White’s Classic Cheesecake with fresh blueberry sauce at £7.50 and three scoops of lemon, mango and raspberry Sorbet for £5.50. The next morning after a soothing night’s sleep against the bed’s duck feather pillows, we made our way down to breakfast before our 11 am checkout. To satisfy my sweet tooth I went for the continental breakfast which included toast with jars of jams and honey, fresh fruit and pastries whilst Arabella enjoyed a traditional Full English Breakfast. If you prefer to lay in or stay in, breakfast (or dinner) in bed is available via a room service menu. As our stay at the Castle Hotel Windsor came to an end, we were left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and safe to say, very full! imon Brencher’s life journey has been a rich and exciting adventure to date. From performing dangerous stunts as a comedy clown in a French Circus to following his dream to be an actor, Simon found himself drawn into the hospitality world. “I fell into hospitality as a way of supplementing my terrible circus wages and enjoyed the industry, and met my wife when we both worked in the same restaurant.” Together with his Spanish wife Norma, they run The Greyfriar, a traditional village pub and Cassandra’s Cup tea room in the heart of Jane Austen’s village of Chawton. “When the Covid crisis hit earlier this year, we were keen to do something to provide additional support to the community and opened a popup shop from our tea room. With running two food-related businesses we have been working in partnership with many local food suppliers who provide the best quality regional produce, and we wanted to be able to continue to support them, while at the same time provide a convenient and safe click and collect service to the community,” commented Simon. “We were overwhelmed with the response, and Norma came up with the idea of

a good supply of fresh mainly organic produce and groceries in-store.” Simon had spent many years working in various London restaurants for renowned chefs including running two restaurants for Gordon Ramsey, and working with chef TV presenter Lawrence Keogh and Michelin Star chef Atul Kochhar.

llie, founder of Frosting and Flowers started making graze boards in lockdown after helping her boyfriend’s mum organise baby showers. Soon, friends and family were requesting Ellie’s grazes and her hobby grew into a business!
