DIPLOMA

ATELIER GRAFTON STADIUM BRIDGING A RIVER “STADIUM” IS THE ASSIGNED TOPIC FOR THE DIPLOMA SEMESTER; FROM A STUDY OF THE SWISS LANDSCAPE AND TERRITORY, IT CAME OUT AS AARAU IS THE ONLY CITY HOSTING AN IMPORTANT FOOTBALL CLUB WITHOUT A PROPER STADIUM. RIVERS HAVE A GREAT IMPACT IN SWITZERLAND: THE FLOWING OF WATER AND THE FLOWING OF PEOPLE GOING TO A MATCH BROUGHT ME TO THINK OF A STADIUM BRIDGING A RIVER (THE AARE). THIS WAY, IT BECOMES AN OPPORTUNITY OF CONDENSATION AND AN INFRASTRUCTURE THAT CONNECTS DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE TERRITORY, EVEN WHEN THE MATCH IS NOT ON. THE STADIUM ITSELF IS CONCEIVED AS A HOLLOW STRUCTURE, AS THE ALREADY EXISTING METALLIC BRIDGES ALL OVER THE SWISS LANDSCAPE, WHERE FOUR ARCHES CONSTITUTE THE MAIN ENTRANCES LEADING THE SPECTATORS TO THE HEART OF THE STADIUM AND TO THEIR SEATING, ALWAYS ALLOWING A VIEW AND A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RIVER AND FORESTRY LANDSCAPE ALL AROUND. MOST OF THE PEOPLE ARE COMING HERE ON FOOT, OR BY BUS COMING FROM THE RAILWAY STATION, IN ORDER TO IMPLEMENT THE RITUAL OF GOING TO A MATCH, CROSSING THE CITY AND THE PARKS, AND IN ORDER TO AVOID THE HEAVY

ATELIER KÉRÉ WOMEN CENTRE IN BURKINA FASO THE LOCATION IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW FROM WHAT WE ARE USED TO: CLIMATE, ECONOMICAL POSSIBILITIES, BUILDING MATERIALS... THE KEY CONCEPT IS TO ADAPT OUR ARCHITECTURE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, WITHOUT RENOUNCING TO THE BENEFITS THAT A BUILDING ALWAYS HAS TO OFFER TO THE OCCUPANTS. IN THIS CASE, THE PROJECT IS DEDICATED TO THE WOMEN, THE REAL STRENGTH OF THIS COUNTRY. TO GIVE SHELTER FROM THE HARD CLIMATE CONDITIONS, TO OFFER WOMEN A COMFORTABLE PLACE FOR WORKING AND SELLING THEIR OWN PRODUCTS, TO EXPERIMENT WITH NEW KIND OF DETAILS ARE SOME OF THE GOALS OF THE SEMESTER. RAMMED EARTH, EASY TO FIND, AND THIN CONCRETE BEAMS, EASY TO BUILD, CONSTITUTE THE MAIN STRUCTURE, PROTECTED BY A VENTILATED CORRUGATED IRON ROOF.

ATELIER NUNES / GOMES DA SILVA INVISIBLE INFRASTRUCTURE THIS LANDSCAPE PROJECT DEALS WITH THE ISSUE OF THE LINKS. A BEAUTIFUL COAST, CALLED INDEED RIA FORMOSA, FIVE TOWNS (FARO, OLHAO, FUSETA, TAVIRA, VILA NOVA DE CACELA) AND A COMMON PROBLEM: A LACKING SYSTEM OF CONNECTION WITH THE CLOSE HINTERLAND. AFTER A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE TERRITORY, ANOTHER SIMILARITY COMES OUT: THE PRESENCE OF A RIVER IN RELATIONSHIP WITH EVERY TOWN. FROM THIS, THE IDEA TO EXPLOIT THE ALREADY EXISTING PATHS OF THE RIVERS TO CONNECT THE COAST WITH THE HINTERLAND,

WITH

THE

REACTIVATION

OF OLD WELLS SPREAD ALL AROUND THE LAND, GIVING A NEW PUSH TO THE DISAPPEARING AGRICULTURE OF THIS AREA AND BEING USED AS RESTING PLACES FOR TRAVELLERS. BEING A PLACE OF TOURISM, THE RIA COULD BE BETTER EXPLOITED EVEN IN THE BACKCOUNTRY, WITH A NEW SYSTEM OF SLOW-MOBILITY DEDICATED TO BIKES, HORSES, KAYAKS OR SIMPLE WALKERS.

ATELIER TROPEANO STAGE FOR THE GREEK THEATRE IN SYRACUSE THE SITE IS MARVELLOUS AND THE WAY TO OPERATE WITH THE THEATRE IS QUITE FREE. IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO PROPOSE A NEW STAGE (WHICH IS INDEED CHANGING EVERY YEAR) AND SOME NEW BUILDINGS WITH ALL THE ACTORS AND WORKERS’ REQUIRED SERVICES, NOWADAYS SCATTERED AROUND THE BACKSTAGE. THE ANTIQUITY OF THE PLACE IS IN DIALOGUE WITH THE ANTIQUITY OF THE CHOSEN SIMPLE VOLUMES (INSPIRED BY ADOLF APPIA’S SKETCHES) ON ONE HAND, AND ON THE OTHER ONE WITH THE NOVELTY GIVEN BY THE MATERIAL CORTEN, WHICH IS PERFECTLY IN CONTRAST WITH THE STRONG WHITE OF THE EXISTING STONE OF THE WHOLE SITE.

ATELIER LAPIERRE SINGLE HOUSE IN HELSINKI FROM A ROOM TO A HOUSE: A REAL SCENOGRAPHY FOR LIVING. ATMOSPHERE IS THE KEY WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS SEMESTER’S ATTITUDE OF WORK. THE STARTING POINT IS FRITZ LANG’S “SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR”, THE STORY ABOUT A CRAZY BUT CHARMING ARCHITECT COLLECTING ROOMS IN WHICH MURDERS HAPPENED. FROM FICTION TO REALITY, THE SITE OF CONSTRUCTION IS JUST NEXT TO ALVAR AALTO’S OFFICE IN HELSINKI, AN ECCENTRIC BUILDING AS SIMPLE AS INTRIGUING. THE TIMBER HOUSE HAS EVERY ROOM, DIFFERENT IN SHAPE FROM THE OTHERS, CONNECTED TO A CENTRAL CORRIDOR GIVING VIEW FROM SIDE TO SIDE OF THE BUILDING ITSELF, WHICH GENTLY FOLLOWS THE SLOPE OF THE SITE.

ATELIER GEERS / VAN SEVEREN HOUSING IN MILAN THE GOAL OF THE SEMESTER IS TO FACE THE REALITY OF THE CITY: IN THIS CASE, A PERIPHERAL AREA OF MILAN. THE THEME IS THE ONE OF THE COPY: MANGIAROTTI’S BUILDING IN VIA QUADRONNO IS CHOSEN AS EXAMPLE TO LEAD THE PROJECT. THE BUILDING IS DEDICATED TO LOW-COST APARTMENTS, WITHIN THEIR 50SQM AND SMALL BALCONIES; TWO DIFFERENT BUT SIMILAR FLOORS ARE ALTERNATING, TO RECREATE A MAJOR MOVEMENT ON THE FACADE. FURTHER MOTION IS GIVEN BY THE REMOVABLE TIMBER PANELS, INTERCHANGING WITH THE GLASS OF THE WINDOWS. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, THE SITE: BUILT IN A SMALL PARK, THE ENTRANCE LEVEL IS AS FREE AS POSSIBLE, TO KEEP A CERTAIN KIND OF TRANSPARENCY IN THIS GREEN AREA.

WORKSHOP IN BIENNALE WITH FRANCIS KÉRÉ MUD WALL A NEW EXPERIMENT FOR THE ITALIAN PAVILION OF WALLS, A NEW EXPERIMENT FOR THE CLASS PARTICIPATING THE WORKSHOP. TO BUILD DIRECTLY WITH OUR HANDS IS MORE CHALLENGING BUT MORE SATISFYING THEN WHAT EVERYBODY IS EXPECTING. AFTER THE WOODEN FORMWORK IS FIXED, THE CLAY IS MIXED WITH SOME STRAW TO GIVE MORE STRENGTH TO THE CONGLOMERATION.

LITTLE

BALLS

OF

THE

MIXTURE ARE THROWN INTO THE FORMWORK, AND PRESSED AS SOON AS A NEW 30

CENTIMETRES

LEVEL

IS

REACHED.

THE WALL IS BUILT IN THREE WEEKENDS, WITH A CONSIDERABLE HEIGHT OF 2,8 METRES, AND LET DRY FOR ANOTHER WEEK BEFORE THE FORMWORK IS REMOVED.

COLOURS OF BRAZIL EVERY COUNTRY HAS A REPRESENTATIVE COLOUR, OR AT LEAST A RANGE OF HUES. BRAZIL HAS TOO MANY. THE RICHNESS AND TOGETHER THE SIMPLICITY OF HAND MADE SMALL DWELLINGS HAS AN OUTSTANDING POSITION WHEN TRAVELING THIS PLACE. THE USE OF COLOURS IN EUROPE IS NOT SO EASILY HANDLED WITH SUCH A NATURAL COMFORT: SO MANY TIMES WE PUT BIG EFFORT IN CHOOSING THEM, AND SO MANY TIMES THEY JUST LOOK WRONG IN THE SURROUNDINGS OR EVEN BLINDING. THESE PICTURES ARE THE RESULT OF TOO MANY RAINY DAYS IN A FORGOTTEN VILLAGE, WHERE EVEN SIMPLE MOBILE CONNECTION HAS NOT YET ARRIVED.

UNEXPECTED SCULPTURES A VERY SHORT SELECTION OF A VERY LONG-LASTING

EXPERIENCE.

NICOLAS

BOUVIER, SWISS-FRENCH WRITER, POET, PHOTOGRAPHER BUT, FIRST OF ALL, TRAVELLER, COULD HAVE BEEN THE NARRATOR OF THIS ADVENTURE, WITH BROKEN CARS AND RANDOM SCHEDULES, BUT LOTS OF INTERESTING ENCOUNTERS. IN THESE CASES, BLACK AND WHITE HELPS IN CONCENTRATING ONLY ON LIGHTS AND SHADOWS, GIVING STRENGTH TO THE SINGLE SUBJECT. “THE PLAN WAS VAGUE, BUT IN SIMILAR CASES THE MAIN THING IS TO LEAVE. […] TRAVELING OUTGROWS ITS MOTIVES. IT SOON PROVES SUFFICIENT IN ITSELF. YOU THINK YOU ARE MAKING A TRIP, BUT SOON THE TRIP IS MAKING YOU - OR UNMAKING YOU”. BOUVIER, NICOLAS, LA POLVERE DEL MONDO [L’USAGE DU MOND, PAYOT, 1963]
