Santa Anita Parents of Arcadia Student Killed in Crosswalk Park is in Accident File $5 Million Municipal Claim Running for 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championships In addition to Santa Anita, Churchill Downs in Kentucky - which is hosting this year’s Breeders’ Cup - and Belmont Park in New York are also finalists for the Breeders Cup, one of racing’s most prestigious awards. Santa Anita Park has hosted the internationally recognized thoroughbred horse racing event five times since 1986, including most recently in 2008 and 2009. Breeders’ Cup Board of Directors is scheduled to meet this Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky.

Antonovich Announces $10k Reward in Shooting Death of High School Football Player The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the shooting death of an John Muir High School football player. On February 12, 18-yearold Brandon Jackson was shot as he walked home from a party in the 300 block of West Palm Street about 10:40 p.m. He was transported to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena where he died a short time later. Jackson had recently completed his junior year at Muir and was a fullback-linebacker for the Muir Mustangs football team. Antonovich encourages anyone with information to call Detective Adan Torres at (323) 890-5500.

Arcadia Stabbing Victims On Saturday July 9, at approximately 2:20p.m., the Arcadia Police Department received a call regarding a fight in the parking lot located at Duarte Road and Golden West. When officers arrived, no fight could be located and all parties involved in the fight had left the location. Sometimes We Make Mistakes BY TERRY MILLER In our last edition (July 7, 2011), we printed an opinion piece, which caused a certain amount of debate in this community. As is often the case, when I lead with my emotions, my communication is not always lucid. As a result, I offended some members of our community and business leaders I respect. I responded to, what I measured to be the hypocrisy of a local blogger whose views are frequently dissimilar to my own. This is not an attempt to minimize my culpability for using poor judgment and

an inappropriate response to said blogger. Opinions (fueled by strong emotions) are like that. We all have opinions, yet ours do not always seem as odious as perhaps they might appear to others. Unlike facts, opinions cannot be checked. In my column I referenced a well-known animals rights group (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals –PETA) - that became involved in a disagreement connected with an elephant that was slated to be included in the July 4 parade in Sierra

Madre. PETA had alleged that this particular elephant had a history of abuse. In the same column, Santa Anita Race Track was mentioned in a quote from PETA’s website - which had no relevance to my piece. This was PETA’s opinion, not my own nor that of Beacon Media Inc. I am an animal advocate - not aligned with any organized group. I recognize that PETA have strong opinions regarding all animals that some are controversial and
