s in any good crime story, there’s always a "person of interest" the cops are looking for. However this time, the criminal is the Mu variant of the coronavirus. While there's nothing yet to suggest that the current COVID-19 vaccines won’t work against the newlynamed Mu variant, the "variant of interest" is top of mind. However, not enough is really known about this latest addition to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Variants of Interest” list to draw any strong conclusions. Nonetheless, it has already made its way to nearly every state in the U.S. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) continues to track variant cases in Los Angeles County. While the most dominant circulating variant in L.A. County continues to be the highlytransmissible Delta variant, the Mu variant is being closely monitored. To date, Public Health has identified 167 Mu variants in L.A. County; these specimens were sequenced between June 19 and Augusts 21, with the majority of Mu specimens sequenced in July. Mu was first identified in Colombia in January 2021 and has since been reported in 39 countries. The World Health Organization labelled variant Mu, lineage B.1.621, as a variant of interest on August 30, 2021. The Mu variant is found to have key mutations linked to greater transmissibility and the potential to evade antibodies. More studies are needed to determine whether Mu variant is more contagious, more deadly or more resistant to vaccine and treatments than other COVID-19 strains.

Reader reacts to ‘… Won’t you be my good neighbor?’ When it comes to good manners, consideration and civility, Shawn Spencer’s seven words say it all: “Behavior, whether good or bad, is learned.” What is most encouraging about good behavior is that children don’t have to be gifted to master it. What it takes is for their parents to practice good examples for them to emulate. And we can all participate in that endeavor by praising children when, for example, we see them carrying their soda cans to a trash bin instead of tossing them on the ground for someone else to pick up. (Their parents love to hear that, too.) Perhaps we, as a society,

are to blame for the abysmal depths into which our civility has fallen. Far too many parents spare no expense to make certain their offspring are successful in academics and consider it even better if they are also outstanding in athletics.

What a pity! They want their children to become success machines but give little thought to their manners and how they treat their fellow human beings. And sadly, our society is all the worse for it. - David Q. MONROVIA
