La Canada resident, Kathryn Hofgaarden, has been elected to serve as the President of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts for 2012-2013. Kathryn has long been involved in community service. In recent years her efforts have been focused on Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. In

2011 she served as Benefit Chair, which was the culmination of 17 years of membership and included a series of challenging positions within the organization. Honored in 2004 with the organization’s prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award, she has served on numerous committees and on the Board of Directors. With a professional background in nursing, she is perhaps an unlikely champion for the arts. Born in Texas, she grew up in Japan with missionary parents where she learned the value of service to the community and dedication to a cause. When asked what compels her to work full time as a volunteer Kathryn becomes serious. “I believe wholeheartedly in the importance of music and in

PSHA’s mission. As we watch more school programs being eliminated, and the economy forcing cutbacks in support of the arts, I am more determined than ever. PSHA has a proud history - over $18 million contributed over the years to many worthy programs. I feel honored to be a part of that legacy. It is very gratifying and humbling to see the difference these funds make in people’s lives. The Music Mobile is one of PSHA’s programs and is particularly close to my heart. While it is informative and enriching to every child who participates, I know it is life changing for some.” Kathryn and her husband, Charles, are parents to two adult children and a champion Cocker Spaniel.

Tech Trek “Campers” to be featured at Arcadia AAUW Meeting Brimful of enthusiasm after a week this simmer at Tech Trek Science/ Math Camp on the Whittier College campus, 13 local middle school girls will bring the highlights of their camp experience to the opening meeting of the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Arcadia AAUW members always look forward to hearing firsthand from the girls about their Tech Trek Camp classes, hands-on experiments and eye-opening field trips. The 13 girls Arcadia AAUW sponsored for Tech Trek this year were from Arcadia, El Monte, Monrovia and Temple City. Rozanne Child (AAUW’s AlhambraSan Gabriel-San Marion Branch) will bring her experiences as co-director of the Tech Trek Camp at

San Diego State University to the meeting. Hearing about Tech Trek Science/ Math Camp is pleasure enough, but as an added bonus, the Arcadia Branch hopes to have a guest speaker from NASA, sent by the JPL outreach office, give a presentation about the Mars rover Curiosity and its exploration of the Red Planet. The Arcadia AAUW meeting will take place on Monday evening, September 10, in the Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Rd. (SW corner of Duarte Rd. and Holly Ave.), Arcadia. The meeting is open to the public at no charge, and ample parking is available. All are invited to come for socializing and refreshments at 6:30 p.m., with the program to follow at 7 p.m. The September meet-

ing always gives members an opportunity to sign up for ongoing interest groups, such as the bridge club and book review groups. The English Conversation Class, which is co-sponsored by Arcadia AAUW and the Arcadia Library, will not be meeting until after the New Year. Arcadia AAUW’s future meetings include dynamic speakers and fine musical entertainment. The public is always welcome. Membership in the American Association of University Women is open to women and men university graduates, as well as to those holding a Associate of Arts degree or its equivalent. For membership information, please call Tamara Kato at (626) 375-6756 or Patricia Dietrich at (626) 446-8437. Those interested may join at any time.
