WEST WIGHT news Yarmouth to host celebratory tea party In honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday, a celebratory tea party is being held at the Community Hall in Yarmouth on Thursday, April 21st from 2pm-5pm. Thanks to a grant from Yarmouth Town Council and help from Community Hall volunteers, a party will be hosted for about 70 people of whom 23 will be receiving special ‘celebration cakes’, as they are over 90 years old.

‘Ritz’ teas of finger sandwiches, scones and little cakes will be served to tables of eight. Children from Yarmouth C of E Primary School will be helping serve the teas and to sing the National Anthem.

There will be quizzes about the Queen and people are being asked to share their memories of how they spent Coronation Day. It is hoped that people will lend photos and memorabilia which can be copied and mounted on the walls of the Community Hall to give a flavour of life 90 years ago.

The loan of china, photographs and memorabilia would be gratefully received by Janet Harding (761261) or Jill Cowley (760327).

The team of volunteers are appealing for loans of non-precious blue and white china; cups, saucers and plates, to add to their collection of 60 cups and saucers for use on the day.

FYT Bus network continues to expand The FYT Bus network (Freshwater, Yarmouth, Totland) has been expanded with a new service link between Brighstone, Shorwell and West Wight. This is keenly supported by the Parishes and residents of the two villages some of whom work as volunteers.The service offers the residents: • Improved access to Freshwater, Yarmouth and Totland • Links to the existing routes and the Yarmouth ferry • The supermarkets and many small independent shops and cafes • The Brighstone route also offers residents of the West Wight community and visitors to the area more opportunities to: • Visit picturesque villages and surrounding countryside served by the Brighstone Loop • Visit friends, village shops, pubs and other amenities • Walkers can travel to anywhere en route and walk back to Freshwater

• Stay a little longer, have lunch and return by Southern Vectis • Enjoy one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the UK The service runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings but for more details see our advert opposite (look out for the bus).

Royal Mail to pull out of West Wight By Cllr. John Medland.

The old Post Office in Freshwater is being sold off. I have put out a petition in some shops in Freshwater requesting that Royal Mail use their other building in Tennyson Road for the collection of rounds by the local delivery staff. The current Royal Mail plan is to transfer the Freshwater sorting office completely to Dodnor Industrial Estate outside Newport.

This means the local staff will have to make four journeys a day, once to travel in to Dodnor, then back to deliver their rounds, then back to

return the Post Office vehicles and then to come home to the West Wight.

This will increase vehicle use and carbon emissions and will add at least two hours to their working day.

In time it is likely that these jobs will pass to workers from the Newport area to save two journeys a day. This risks losing the expertise of our local postal staff which is vital for an area that is acutely difficult to deliver to given the general lack of numbered addresses and often even missing house names.

Local deliveries therefore need local staff who can memorise each house name in order to plan each daily round.

The Tennyson Road building could also be used for local residents to pick up failed deliveries. Therefore, for the benefit of the local staff and residents and in the long term interests of a good quality postal service, I hope we can appeal to Royal Mail to reconsider their plans and keep the PO39 and 40 deliveries in the hands of the local staff who know where we live.

The ability dogs have an enormously positive effect on the lives on the young people and children, as they greatly improve their independence and often give them confidence to leave their homes alone for the very first time.

The ability dogs can pick up items; open doors; help dress and undress; help calm the acute anxiety experienced by autistic young people and they can be trained to summon help when a recipient has an epileptic seizure.

SPEED WATCH TRAINING: My thanks to those people that have put themselves forward and have been trained to carry out some speed watch in our area. It will be interesting to see the results of speeding, or perceived speeding around our area.

DOUBLE YELLOW LINES: I received more requests for double yellow to be added in Bellevue Road.

ROAD RESURFACING PROGRAMME 2016: Baring Road, Charles Road, Churchill Close, Egypt Esplanade, Parklands Avenue, Park Road, Queens Road and Rogerson Close in Cowes, and Albert Road, Church Road, Princes Esplanade and Rew Street in Gurnard are scheduled to be resurfaced this year. Please note Ward Avenue is also scheduled to be repaired this month.

SHORE ROAD: Due to the deterioration of Shore Road, repairs have been made and I have requested the road being reconsidered for inclusion within this year’s programme.

LAND ADJACENT TO DOTTENS FARM: The report and recommendation on this has been delayed owing to issues being raised concerning the discovery of dormice on site. In light of this, the hearing is now likely to take place on Tuesday 12th April.

I will do my best to pursue, but traffic orders take up to six years to progress!

These issues have been relayed to the landowner, who has agreed to meet with me.

by Richard Knowles With the promise of better weather as the days lengthen, life in the coppice awakens and, with spring now in full flow, the flowers on the woodland floor are all bursting into bloom. April is marked by primroses, violets and wood anemones.

What many consider to be the main event of spring in the Island’s woodlands commences in May; the appearance of bluebells. By the middle of the month, the wood will be carpeted in a sea of slender, powder blue flowers, each nodding gently in the breeze. The areas in the wood opened up by last year’s cutting of the hazel understorey are now bathed in light and this is what the bluebells love.

The mood of the wood changes not only with the seasons, but also in the course of a single day. On a still morning, the tree trunks first appear out of the dark like an assembly of grey pillars. The mammals of the woodland floor return to their burrows and nests and the barn owl makes its last sweep of the open glades. The daylight increases and the smaller birds begin their daily chanting. Then, as the sun warms the

earth and the mist begins to dissolve, the diverse shapes of the timber tops appear.

By noon, if the day is sunny, the light passing through the emerging leaves brings a vibrancy to the shades of green and the sunbeams glimmer off the shiny wings of insects in flight. By the day’s end, the light in the wood is altogether different. With my back to the sun as it lowers and reddens, the trunks and branches take on a russet hue. When I’m facing the setting sun, they become silhouettes against a backdrop of red and orange that changes by the minute, until the gloaming takes over. Once twilight descends, the tree canopy seems to close over, except where the newly coppiced areas allow the moon and starlight through to the woodland floor. Then, under the cover of darkness, nature’s night shift begins again.

Everything in nature is getting on with the business of continuing life. My workshop is regularly a prime nesting site for that well known avian squatter, the robin. In most years during April, I find a pile of leaves on my workbench and a developing nest on the shelf above.

Finally, the nest is ready and Mrs Robin begins to lay an egg a day for six or seven days and then starts sitting on them. The eggs hatch in early May. The first clue is a little pile of eggshells on the workbench below the nest. The nest is too close to the roof to be able to look in, but I do see a few hungry mouths poking over the edge of the nest while Mrs Robin is out.

Mum and Dad robin come and go whilst on their all day food collecting duties and are not at all bothered by my presence in the workshop as I work on the various items I’m crafting from some ash I cut last winter. The pile of mealworms I place on the workbench every day as a reward for their company is quickly transferred into the mouths of the hungry chicks.

Back in the wood, it’s time to pause cutting coppice as the sap is rising and the birds, dormice, and squirrels are building their nests up in the branches. Now I can spend time under the developing leaf canopy crafting products from the coppice poles cut during the winter.

With the benefit of a decent fire close by, a kettle of hot water always to hand and something chocolatey from my wife Linda’s “Hundred Muffins” recipe book, I’m happy working on woven hazel hurdle panels and miniature versions for plant supports and border edging. Spring is also my busiest time of year for the sale of hazel bean poles and pea sticks. Victoria – Queen of England, Empress of India, Housewife of East Cowes . . .

These three photos of the Queen’s 1897 Jubilee celebrations at Newport are notable for a couple of reasons – one, they are of the same event, taken within minutes of each other, and two, the Queen is smiling . . .

Island residents were used to the sight of their monarch - she had lived at Osborne House since the early 1840s.

Never owned by the state, it was the personal property of the Queen, bought with her own money; a private home where she could do what she liked when she liked. Writing to an uncle she said: “You will be pleased to hear that we have purchased Osborne; it is so nice to have a quiet place of one’s own, free from the charming Departments who are the plague of one’s life.” Balmoral, tucked away in the Scottish Highlands, was another private purchase that, like Osborne, was deliberately aimed at dissuading her Ministers from turning up at her door unannounced.

For the next fifty years the two homes provided the unhappy Queen with an

escape from the affairs of state. After Albert died, leaving her a widow at 42, she was shattered, and withdrew from public life. Her virtual disappearance and her appointment of John Brown as manservant saw her popularity plummet but by the time of her 1897 Jubilee, Brown was dead, the Queen was rehabilitated and now she could do no wrong.

On the Island, the summer of 1897 saw a long series of extravagant Jubilee celebrations. “After tea, drove to Newport… through the beautifully decorated streets. At the Market Place we stopped in a front of a platform on which stood the Mayor & Corporation, who presented me with an Address…. we left amidst great cheering.” The County Press noted, “The Queen was all

On New Year’s Day, 1901, the Queen wrote in her diary, “Another year begun and I am feeling so weak and unwell that I enter upon it sadly.” Three weeks later, on Tuesday, January 22nd, at half past six in the evening, the Queen died in her bedroom at Osborne, cradled in the arms of her grandson, the Kaiser. Her son Edward, now King, closed her eyes, and the announcement of her death was posted at the gates of Osborne House where large crowds had gathered.

Victoria was the first monarch whose death was reported electronically. Local boys had been recruited by Fleet Street reporters to race down to East Cowes post office on their bicycles, with a bonus for the first one to reach the telegraph counter where forty extra staff

had been drafted in to work through the night. In a matter of minutes the news of the Queen’s death was telegraphed to London and the Empire.

The following day the Queen’s body was viewed by the household and servants, “Yesterday, 300 of the tenants, with their wives and families, were permitted to pass through the room in which the body is lying. There lay their beloved Queen, beautiful in her long sleep. With calm and placid face, wearing her widow’s cap, with her hands crossed in perfect repose.”

A triple-shell coffin was prepared for the Queen. Her body was placed in the inner shell, made from oak from the Osborne estate, and this was then placed inside a mahogany, lead-lined, outer shell.

But before any of this could be done, there were secret matters to be seen to.

The Queen’s dresser, Mrs. Tuck, took Sir James Reid, the Queen’s doctor, aside and produced a secret note that had been given to her by the Queen three years before. The Queen, who always enjoyed a good funeral, had left a handwritten note detailing ‘very minute instructions’ as to the actions

to be taken after her death. It included details of items to be placed in her coffin, ‘some of which, none of her family were to see’.

The faithful Doctor Reid, who had attended the Queen for twenty years (but had never been allowed to examine her) followed her instructions to the letter.

“I helped Mrs Tuck put a satin dressing gown on the Queen. We cut her hair and rearranged the flowers, put a layer of charcoal on the floor of the coffin and then the Kaiser, King Edward and myself

lifted the Queen’s body into it.”

When the doctor was finally alone, he carried out the Queen’s last instructions.

He placed in the coffin Albert’s dressing gown, the Queen’s wedding veil, a sprig of Balmoral heather, a cast of Albert’s hands and numerous photographs and pieces of jewellery.

Finally, Doctor Reid placed a bunch of flowers in the Queen’s hands. They were strategically placed to conceal the fact that in her left hand the Queen was holding a photograph of John Brown.

The Queen smiling, as she often did. Our Council own a vast collection of historical artefacts currently sitting on shelves in a store in the Ryde area. It includes one of Queen Victoria’s carriages; possibly this one. The collection is not open to the general public.

THE JOHN HANNAM INTERVIEW

Rob ‘Emu’ Farley

Since 1971 it’s been hard to escape Rob ‘Emu’ Farley. He first came here as the local manager of door-knockers Betterwear. You may have seen him in shops as a commercial traveller for sweets and tobacco wholesalers, refereeing an Island football match, on stage for the Don Mills Variety Club, parading as a Rod Hull look-a-like in Island carnivals, as an assistant manager of the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital cafe and shop or, currently, as a volunteer at the Medina Theatre.

When I first met him, back in the 70s, he was like a real-life Frank Spencer. He’d fixed a new front gate to his property and it took me five minutes to open it.

Rob, who is still affectionately known as ‘Emu’, due to resembling the late Rod Hull, also had his own emu for some years, made from raffia and ladies tights. The only person who didn’t laugh was Rod Hull himself. Rob confronted him when he opened an Island Motor Show. I’m sure Rob’s emu would have been much kinder to Michael Parkinson.

Rob is a born salesman and was popular with customers all over the Island - and they all knew him as ‘Emu’.

“I treated my customers as if they were my own parents. It was all about respect and we had such fun. You had to sell yourself first and then it became easier,” said Rob. He did admit he was a little bemused when he became a catering salesman for Bookers and didn’t know one end of a cow from another, when questioned about particular meat cuts.

On one occasion during his days with Sinclair & Collis he was asked to collect some money from a notorious late payer.

Rob was asked to leave and as he left, with no cash, he shut the shop door and the handle came off in his hand. He just left it on the step and scarpered.

During one of his days on the road he took his young daughter Emma with him for a day out and she went into a village shop with dad when he was selling a new product - milk in cans. It was not an easy sell and he had an even tougher job when

she told the shopkeeper she didn’t like it.

Once Rob was in Ventnor and he called in at the Terminus pub for an order. Local dentist Keith Fradgley was in there having his lunch: two bags of pork scratchings, which was a surprise. As Rob left, Keith called out to him: “Keep selling the sweets, it’s good for trade.”

Rob, who lived in the Birmingham area for many years, played in the same school team as Bob Latchford, who went on to play centre forward for Birmingham City, Everton and England. He also began refereeing in Brum and this continued here on the Island from 1972 to 2008. He did make the Top 10 of Hampshire League referees but was never likely to earn up to £100,000 a year as a Premier League official.

“I was told once that I would have gone a lot further if I’d sent off and booked more players. I preferred to have a quiet word in their ear.”

Recently he received an award for his 50 years service to the Referees Association, as did his close friend Mick Hunns. Rob has been the chairman of the IW Referees Association for 15 years and before that he was their secretary for 20 years.

He still vividly remembers his first ever Island match. He refereed the old arch enemies - Seaview and Brading. The final score was Seaview 1 Brading 6. Brading’s Tony Grimwade got a hat-trick and Seaview’s Nobby Nash lost a tooth.

“I thought many of the players were swearing but was told ‘furk it here’ was actually an Island expression!”

On another occasion Rob was refereeing one of only two games that were played on

the Island, during a spell of bad weather.

It was Newchurch Reserves v Plessey Reserves. The wind was so strong at the Princelett ground the seagulls could not even take off. The local paper headline read ‘Seagulls attack Emu.’ On the same day a player went to take a long throw-in and walked back into the electric fence that hadn’t been turned off. He was shocked, no doubt. Thankfully, it all ended safely.

When Rob took matches on the mainland he thought he was safe from any friendly crowd banter. All was well until he was refereeing a game at Waterlooville and he heard the unexpected cry of “come on Emu.” His fame had spread.

‘Emu’ is a great storyteller and has kept locals amused for over 40 years. He’s also very clever and you never quite know whether it’s fact or fiction. According to Rob, when he had his interview for a volunteer at the Medina Theatre he was asked to walk backwards with an ice cream tray! I didn’t fall for this one. I’ll let Rob tell it.

“I had to phone 111 the other night as my partner, Angela, swallowed two clothes pegs. They asked me to put her on the line but I said I can’t, as she’d swallowed both of them.”

I always have assumed that the lovely Angela was Rob’s wife – until he corrected me.

“We are not married and she has had at least seven leap years but has still not asked me.”

They make a great double act and he still makes her laugh. Just a few minutes in Rob’s company makes anyone laugh – except the late Rod Hull.

Legal With financial abuse of the elderly apparently on the rise on the Island, where are attorneys going wrong?

Financial Lasting Powers of Attorney are an easy way of gaining access to a person’s finances, but the authority is a privilege and privileges can be removed if abused. There are limitations to an attorney’s authority and attorneys need to be wary.

Several cases have come before the Court of Protection in recent years and looking at the facts of one extreme case highlights recurring issues:

The gardener may have thought he was on safe ground when the police decided there was insufficient evidence to commence an investigation, but the Court of Protection have different parameters.

A widow who had never had children was befriended by her gardener whom she appointed as her sole attorney by a Lasting Power of Attorney. This power authorised him to manage her financial affairs. There were no limitations on the power and likewise, no provision extending his authority.

The financial abuse by the gardener was quite extraordinary and if we assume there was no criminal intent, then his actions are unbelievably naïve.

He placed the net proceeds of sale of the widow’s house in a high interest account in his sole name.

He made several attempts to cash in an Aviva Bond, so much so that Aviva made a complaint to the Office of the Public Guardian.

The attorney made a gift to himself of £38,000.

There were numerous unexplained withdrawals from ATMs and a payment by banker’s draft of £1500.

Sadly our political masters abusing their expenses’ claims were a poor role model, but what happened to those MPs concerned is a lesson worth noting.

£10,300.70 was supposedly spent on improvements to the widow’s house to make it ready to sell, but the attorney could not produce receipts.

It transpired that £7300 actually represented a ‘salary’ to himself of £20 a day for house clearance and rubbish removal - for 365 days! Plus a further £1,040 for gardening at a rate of £20 per hour.

He used monies to fund his wife’s Motability vehicle by paying a deposit of £599. He then spent a further £55 per week to hire the vehicle from his wife. Additionally, she was paid £10 every three to four days for petrol.

An attorney is first and foremost a trustee and that should never be forgotten. If suspicion is raised an attorney can be called to explain his actions to the Public Guardian. So here are some basic principles: • Do not give away the donor’s money even if the donor would have made the gift had he/she been well.

• Do not borrow money from the donor without the consent of the Court of Protection.

• An attorney can only be paid out-of-pocket expenses.

Otherwise he/she can only be paid for his time if he/she is a professional attorney or there is authority in the power or from the Court.

• If an attorney wishes to be paid a regular sum for his/ her time in providing services, then he should apply to the Court to be paid a salary!

No one likes to think to about their own demise and what would happen if they weren’t around, but failure to do so, particularly in relation to the distribution of your assets, can have devastating consequences for your loved ones.

Most people assume they are covered because of the nature of the relationships around them.

We often hear people say, “I don’t need a Will because I am married and my spouse gets everything.”

Or, “We are common law spouses so everything will passes to each other.” This is simply not always the case!

Should you die without a Will, then you are relying on the Intestacy rules to distribute the assets in your estate. These are fixed rules specifying who benefits from the estate, along with how much they receive. The distribution under these rules will depend upon the value of the estate and the relatives which survive the deceased.

If you are married without Wills then you are running the risk that on the death of one of you, the estate will be shared between your spouse and your children. This may mean that your spouse may not end up with the assets that you wanted them to have.

If you are living with a partner but are not married and you do not have a Will, assets in your sole

name will not automatically pass to your partner. Instead, these assets would pass to your blood relatives and this may mean that you are leaving your partner in financial hardship on your death.

If you are single and think that it doesn’t matter who receives your assets, or you are assuming that your family will just deal with it for you, having a Will can assist them in managing the estate administration process and can ensure that those people you want to benefit actually do so.

If you don’t have a Will then a family member that you did not know existed might benefit from your estate! Even worse, a family member that you do know exists might end up with your money!

Losing a loved one is a traumatic time. To then find out that you are not entitled to the assets that you always believed you would be entitled to can cause additional stress at an

Lead the Way - Public Forum Age Friendly Island is one of 12 Island based projects working in partnership to tackle loneliness and support Islanders to enable them to enjoy the many opportunities older age can offer. Funded through the Big Lottery, Age Friendly Island developed from an initiative led by the World Health Organisation. Whilst aimed at adults over 50, the project is passionate about helping to create inclusive and accessible environments for people of all ages.

With a wealth of experience and insight it’s important for older people to exercise choice and to be involved at a local level. As part of the Age Friendly Island initiative anyone interested in directing the project is invited to join the Public Forum meetings.

The Age Friendly Public Forum meets quarterly in three separate areas across the Island. The groups are located in Central and West Wight; the North and East Wight and the South Wight.

The Public Forum is open to anyone interested in making a difference to our Island. They are a space where practical issues relating to the project are developed and Islanders have the opportunity to really shape important changes happening on the Island, such as health and social care, transport and outdoor spaces.

In May the Public Forum Meeting will be teaming up with My Life A Full Life to focus on how we can shape the Island’s health and care services around people’s needs. As part of that discussion, they will be asking you what you want from health and care services and how, together, we can plan for the future.

Hair Show 2016 Isle of Wight College

A fantastic evening was had by all at the annual Isle of Wight College Hair Show, held at Medina Theatre on March 9th.

The Hair Show is the culmination of months of hard work for the Level 2 and 3 hair students who showcase their hair, make-up and costume creations to a panel of judges and a packed audience.

The theme given to the students this year was ‘Eco Divas’ and they were told they could only use recycled, repurposed and reused products for their hair creations and costumes.

Their brief was about environmental sustainability. Their research has taken them through a journey of global warming; sea, land and air pollution; deforestation and their effects on human and animal life. It is a real education for all involved.

This year’s judges of the Level 2 and 3 hair and total looks (i.e. the combination of the hair, make-up and costume) were made up of Wendy Harris, Julie Wallis, the Beacon’s Sarah Griffin and Millie Cooke. Wendy competed in the hairdressing industry for many years all over England, winning many awards. She also led

the Great Britain hairdressing team to international success. Julie competed for many years in hairdressing competitions all over the country, going on to National Hairdressers Federation Team GB ladies fashion team. She achieved success as European and British Champion in her field. Millie is the winner of last year’s Level 3 Total Look competition.

She currently works at K&H Hair Salon in Cowes. The judges of the mood boards were Amanda Gavaux and Christine Dellanoy from Amey.

The chosen charity for the evening was Kissy Puppy with funds being raised through a raffle, a donation from the proceeds of sales of the Isle of Wighter voucher book and album sales from the evening’s performer: Claydon Connor.
