SURVIVOR ST

My husband of twenty-two years has been having an affair on and off thr g g

This affair was devastating, heartbreaking, and sad, but most of all, what was to come in the years to follow made me question at times my sanity, my value, and my contributions to the family. As the affair continued throughout the years, I was told time and time again it did not, and was not, happening. He told me that things I read were not real, that things I saw with my own two eyes I did not see. I was at a point where I was so confused. I felt lost, hopeless, and was miserable. I begged to be able to talk to a therapist, but I was told that if I was going to seek help they would kick me out of the family.

There were multiple times in our marriage that I tried to leave, but I kept being drawn in by his lies and manipulation I was now questioning my own reality I was suffering from depression due to these things, and had even contemplated suicide a time or two because I was made to feel unworthy

My breaking point was a four-day period when I couldn’t call or talk to anyone, not even my mom There was always someone by my side, twenty-four hours a day When I finally had a few moments to myself I reached out to my mom, who had seen the abuse for years She would say things to me, but I would ignore her because I felt like she didn’t know what she was talking about. She called my friend and asked him to help. He tried taking me to the hospital, but because I was so afraid of my husband and his career, I would not go. I agreed to go to the Beacon Center because it was 100% confidential and would not be reported, therefore not hurting my husband’s career.

When we arrived, I looked at the sign and it said it was for domestic violence and sexual abuse. We walked up to the door and I could not go in. I said, “This is not me.” Those things are not happening to me, and I did not want to take resources away from someone who really needed it. After driving away, my friend received a call from the center and they asked to speak to me I agreed to return to the center and I am so thankful I did That day changed my life forever

The counselor spoke to me about gaslighting As she’s describing it to me, my heart sank This was what was happening to me all these years She told me about manipulation being a form of emotional and mental abuse I felt relieved that I finally had someone confirm I was not crazy They offered me counseling, a safe place to stay, and twenty-four-hour access to someone to talk to It was my counseling at the Beacon Center that led me to do reading and research about gaslighting During this, I realized that my husband is a narcissist, a compulsive liar, and a gaslighter, and there’s no changing him.

The Beacon Center has helped me to understand that mental and emotional abuse is real. It is harmful. Some survive; some do not. It does hurt. It is dangerous. I am so grateful for my family, my friends, and the Beacon Center. I am finally starting to be myself again. I am in a healthy relationship. I am happy.

BECOMING A SPONSOR

Corporate donors are a vital part of our organization. The generosity of our community ensures that victims and survivors have access to services to help keep them safe while attempting to leave an abusive relationship. We know that individuals sometimes leave their homes and situations with nothing but the clothes on their backs and fear in their hearts

Every year, Beacon Center engages new and returning sponsors to support our mission Monetary and in-kind donations are used where needed most, ensuring that all of our programs and services are fully funded each year Without the Beacon Center, which provides shelter to clients at no-cost, the community or clients themselves would have had to provide shelter in order to safely leave their abusive relationship In 2021, this cost would have totaled approximately $61,650

Through corporate sponsorships, businesses are able to support Beacon Center while gaining access to our community and sponsorship benefits Together, we can promote a positive brand image, increase brand awareness and help your business reach a wider audience through event advertising, donation matching and promotional opportunities. Specific benefits awarded by each sponsorship level are outlined on the following page.

If you are not ready to commit to one of our main sponsorship levels, don’t worry! You can still provide critical support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking and/or elder abuse living in Clark, Codington, Deuel, Grant and Hamlin Counties through regular monetary gifts. Regular gifts allow us to plan ahead and offer the long-term commitment that survivors need to improve their lives. Suggested donation amounts include:

$30: the cost of one box of diapers provided by the Beacon Center's pantry

$75: the cost of one night in a hotel room a survivor would pay without Beacon Center

$94: the average cost of one service provided to a client

Tax Exempt Status: Beacon Center is a 501(c)3 Organization
