Margaret Lorrain Womble Smith has eluded arrest since slipping off an electronic monitoring device and vanishing from the coastal Texas town where she lived. Smith, 52, had posted a $125,000 bond on a charge of hiring a man to kill her estranged husband of 28 years, George. His battered body was found in August, 2007.    Iraq war veteran Dylan Laughery, 24, is serving life without parole for beating George to death. He did not divulge how much money he got,

but Smith withdrew nearly $44,000 from her bank in the days before the killing. Laughery had no connection to the victim.    While the hitman awaited trial, the mother of four vanished, last heard from on August 10, 2009. Smith is 5’6”, 140 pounds, with brown eyes and an olive complexion. She may dye her dark hair blond. She is a smoker and a drinker, police say, and colorful, judging from the names she hung on her kids: Stormy Summer, Scarlet Sunset, Saffron Sunshine and Sequoia Sundance—all Smiths.    A n y o n e seeing this woman, who may work in a grill or restaurant, is asked to call 911 or the Angleton Police Department at (979)8492383.

At last, Raleighites have an opportunity to take action against violent crime in the capital. The Raleigh Police Department and CrimeStoppers are co-sponsoring an illegal gun reporting program that pays cash for tips about unlawful firearm possession, whether the weapons have been stolen, are owned by a felon, or have been changed in some way to make illegal, like removing the serial number.    It is estimated that over a half million guns are stolen every year and that 8 out of 10 people charged with crimes involving guns obtained them illegally.

To report illegal firearms: 1. Call 911 or 919-834-HELP (4357). 2. Provide specific and detailed information as to the location and description of the person in possession of the illegal firearm. 3. Receive a code number instead of giving your name. 4. Call 919-834-HELP (4357) 72 hours later. If your information led to an arrest and seizure of a firearm, you will receive a CASH reward up to $200 — NO QUESTIONS ASKED.    The City of New York credits seizing illegally owned guns as a major component to its success in reducing murders last year. If it can work in the Big Apple, why not the City of Oaks?

On Dec. 16, 1962, convicted bank robbers John Paul Scott, 35, and Darl Lee Parker tried busting out of “The Rock.” The disappearance six months earlier of three fellow inmates who swam off the island probably fired their hopes of a successful escape.    December 16th marked the 25th anniversary of the first attempted Alcatraz escape, in 1937, by Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe, who presumably drowned. Undeterred by such history, Scott and Parker bent the bars covering a window and set off swimming the 1 ¼ miles to the mainland. The water was 53 degrees.    To bolster their chances of survival, they inflated rubber gloves to make water wings. Survival, they accomplished. Success – not so much. Parker only got about 100 yards out before he paused exhausted on a rock formation. Just a half hour after his escape, guards plucked him off his resting spot.    An hour-and-a half later, Scott was found unconscious and suffering from hypothermia underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. He is the only escapee known to have made it to the mainland. Scott and Parker hold a historical footnote for pulling off the last escape attempt. Alcatraz closed permanently the following March.

NORTH CAROLINA SEX OFFENDERS

johnston county RECENT ARRESTS

Since 1996, any person convicted of certain sexual-based crimes in the state of North Carolina is required to register with the local sheriff within three days of being released from jail or within ten days of moving to a new residence. It is a felony to fail to register or to notify the sheriff of any change of address or employment. Like most states, North Carolina rates offenders according to the risk they pose to the public, with a one time offender being the lowest and violent predator being the highest.    Offenders are required to remain on the registry anywhere from ten years to life, depending on the offense. Citizens can search for offenders in their areas by going to the state’s attorney general’s website, http:// sexoffender.ncdoj.gov/about.aspx, and searching by either the offender’s name or by address. Sevierville, Tennessee -   Two deputies sitting in a local market while on duty have been ordered to compensate the market’s owner for a computer screen after a .40 caliber revolver accidentally discharged, blowing through the screen and the door to a cooler and lodging in a tube of frozen baloney. One man unloaded his sidearm to demonstrate its heft, but says it went off when he went to re-holster it. See? Even highly trained pros have handgun accidents. Thank goodness it was baloney! Stockton, California –    The average five-year-old weighs what, forty pounds? So ‘splain how one needs to be hogtied with plastic zip ties to be managed by a cop. That’s what allegedly happened when a teacher asked an elementary school resource officer to talk to a disruptive student. When the kid, according to the cop, began hitting and kicking, he was trussed up and driven to a psychiatric hospital. The kid’s parents say they were never called until it was all over. Convicted burglar and terrorizer David Hobson scaled a razor wire fence at the state prison and went on the lam on the 1st. David’s dad Glenn helped all he could, and grandma’s car was one of three Hobson allegedly used during his five days on the run. He left bloody gauze in granny’s ride, a souvenir of his fence scaling. Beaverton, Oregon -   A police lieutenant here with 24 years on the job has been arrested for shoplifting personal lubricant. Dean Meisner was picking up a prescription from the Safeway grocery store pharmacy when a loss prevention employee, who knows Meisner personally, allegedly observed him walking out with a bottle of slick’um in

The 51-yearold victim of the January, 2008 onslaught lost his penis, one of his eyes, and part of his intestines in a knifing that took place after an evening of drinking. Harry Klages II was already on probation when he attacked casual acquaintance Andrew Lesperance in his home. Klages was on probation for having stabbed one man and attacked another with a hammer. Lake Helen, Florida -   Taking a cue from the English ladies whose 1999 “girlie” calendar netted enormous profits for leukemia research, a group of American Legion ladies here, ages 44 to 86, have created their own cheesecake calendar to raise money for their post. Question

What is the most dangerous city in the country? And what makes it the most dangerous?

Answer

According to the federal crime database of the Department of Justice, St. Louis, Missouri is the most dangerous city in the U.S. Nationwide, there are an average of 429.2 violent crimes per 100,000 people. St. Louis racked up 2070.1 per 100,000 residents in ’09. Those figures were released at the end of last year. When sheriff deputies in Oregon started noticing the dramatic decline in the appearance of suspects in relatively short periods of time, one began compiling booking photographs to keep a record. What he learned is that the nosedive in health and well-being occurred in people using methamphetamines, or meth, and that selling, making, and using the drug was exploding in their part of the country. Meth is a stimulant drug that gives a powerful, immediate high when it is smoked, snorted, or injected. It costs about $100 an ounce to make in a home setting, yet sells for eight times that on the street. While it started out being produced in remote rural areas, now meth has spread to every state and is being produced in the suburbs and cities, even in cars rolling down the road. This sample of mug shots shows how destructive the drug is in a short period of time.
