What’s New

Veterans Art Center Tampa Bay (VACTB) is having its Grand Opening on March 25, from 11am to 8pm, at their new location in the Gaslight Plaza at 6798 Crosswinds Drive North, St. Petersburg (behind Chili’s). VACTB is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for military and veterans to develop and showcase their creative and artistic accomplishment. Their mission is to provide therapy, healing/wellness and educational programming for veterans, active military, first responders and their families. It is also supportive of their need for creative outlets as well as the need for economic opportunities. There will be food trucks, art demonstrations, street performers, art exhibits, live music and a kids’ art zone at the Grand Opening celebration. The galleries will be on full display along with additional pieces in the courtyard. The event is pet and family-friendly. Phone 813-504-3092. One of the most popular resorts on the beach has changed hands. The Sirata Beach Resort and Conference Center has been acquired in an off-market deal by Crescent Real Estate, LLC along with the Atlanta-based Five Star Realty Partners, LLC. HEI Hotels will manage the resort. This company also manages under such brands as Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott. The Sirata, as it is popularly known, was owned by the Nicklaus family for more than 50 years. They took the property from a 46-unit motel to a well-known resort with 382 guest rooms, three restaurants, three swimming pools and 30,000 square feet of meeting and conference space. However, it had become increasingly difficult to compete with newer resorts in other locations along Pinellas County’s beaches because of local restrictions. The Sirata is located at 5300 Gulf Boulevard, St. Pete Beach. Phone 727-897-5200 and see their website at www.sirata.com. If you’re looking for a fun and family friendly way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year, the Indian Shores St. Patrick’s Day Festival takes place on Saturday, March 18 from 11am to 4pm at the Municipal Center, 19305 Gulf Boulevard, Indian Shores. The festival will feature arts and crafts vendors, Irish dancers, live music by Dan Bauer, food, beer and wine sales, and a book sale. There will also be a collection by the Beach Community Food Pantry, so don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item to donate. There is no cover charge for the event, but as the seating is limited, it’s a good idea to bring a chair. This is sure to be a fun day for all ages. Continued on page 6

Open for two years now, A Slice of New York, an authentic New York pizzeria, has collected quite a loyal following. Which is no surprise because their food is simply delicious! Be warned: one taste and you’ll be hooked. A Slice of New York’s owners take pride in serving pizzas, heroes, wings and pasta dishes that are freshly cooked to order. You can taste the quality in every bite. They use Grande 100% Mozzarella cheese, which is the best available, make their own pizza dough and sauces daily, and bake their hero rolls, garlic knots and pinwheels from scratch. And, you won’t want to miss the homemade meatballs! Seriously, you haven’t had any this good since Mom’s (and they are probably even better than hers, though we would never tell her that). We are talking melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. A Slice of New York bakes pizzas, calzones and Stromboli to order in a brick oven, with a huge selection of toppings to choose from. Build your own, with your favorite sauce and toppings, or choose one of their specialty pizzas, such as the Lasagna Pizza, which is topped with zesty marinara sauce, sausage, meatballs, ricotta and Grande cheeses. To die for! Their NY-style thin crust is light and crispy, with lots of flavor, and the sauce-to-cheese ratio is just right. Beyond pizza, they offer Buffalo wings and boneless chicken chunks with a selection of homemade sauces, including their special-recipe Sesame Garlic Pepper. They also have a variety of fresh salads, including a Greek salad, for which they make their own rosemary potato salad. On the pasta side, their five-layer Homemade Lasagna is excellent, and they also offer a number of Italian favorites, like Baked Ziti, Chicken Parmigiana, and Sausage and Peppers. A Slice of New York’s hero sandwiches are served on freshly baked bread, and lots of times people come in specifically asking for the Meatball Parmigiana hero, because they have heard about it from a friend. You’ll also want to try the Authentic Greek Gyro, with homemade Tzatziki sauce, rolled in a traditional flatbread. One visit isn’t enough; you’ll need to come back again, because it’s nearly impossible to choose when everything looks and tastes so amazing. They offer delivery and carry out, plus if you decide to dine in, A Taste of New York has indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance is classic New York City, with a hand-built brick archway to the kitchen, custom NYC-themed artwork on the walls and music from the great old-school crooners, like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, playing throughout. A Slice of New York is located at 595 Corey Avenue in St. Pete Beach, in the PJ’s Seafood Plaza. Open daily from 11am-4am! Visit www.asliceofnewyork.net to see their complete menu, and call 727-201-9900 for take-out or delivery.

BeachLife March 16 - March 29, 2017

Lauren’s Corner lauren copenhaver Dear BeachLife Readers, As the third quarter ends for Pinellas County Schools and we head into the last nine weeks of the year, it is important to keep up with our studies and finish the year out strong. Spring break brings some well-deserved time off and a fresh start to the final quarter, but it is important to stay organized and study to prepare for all of the end of the year exams and tests we have coming up. There are many ways to stay organized and it is all about finding the way that works best for you. These are some of the techniques I use to stay on top of everything and study for the many tests I have every week. Using a planner to track homework and projects is one of the keys to staying organized. Whenever I get an assignment or I have an activity going on, I will write it in my planner so I won’t forget about it. Doing this helps me stay on track with what I have due and also what is going on outside of homework assignments. There are also apps for your computer or phone that can help you plan and keep you from missing deadlines. These apps are similar to written planners where you input what you have due and they sync to your calendar on your phone or computer. It is hard to find a teen today without an electronic device, so a calendar app would be an easy way to keep track of what you have going on. Many schools today also use websites such as Moodle or ManageBac to

assist with homework organization, and learning to use these tools will help you stay on top of assignments and get good grades. Keeping track of your grades as the semester progresses is also important. Many schools use an electronic system in which teachers input grades as they are earned. Keeping an eye on your progress and talking to teachers if a mistake is noticed can help ensure your grades are accurate. Seeking extra help from teachers or after school tutors when you need it rather than waiting until the final week of the semester is a good habit to develop. An easy way to watch your grades is using the program your school most likely provides. For Pinellas County Schools, the program is called Focus (focus.pcsb.org) and every student has an assigned username and password to access the portal. Making sure you know where you stand at all times during the semester is a great way to stay on top of your grades and ensure a good outcome at the end of the year.

As far as studying goes, there are many apps and techniques that can help you. Quizlet is a studying app and website that allows you to input terms and create study games or quizzes. Also studying in chunks and taking short breaks will help you retain the information better than waiting until the last minute and trying to cram it in all in at once. You can set a timer or an alarm for designated study sessions or set up study groups with friends to help each other study in advance of a test and not just the night before. This will help you comprehend the information more efficiently and retain it for your test. Overall, there are many ways you can stay on top of the last nine weeks of school and finish out the year strong! Finding the method that works best for you, setting goals for the quarter and staying organized will set you up for end-of-year success!

On November 7 of this year, Pinellas County voters will decide on a ten-year renewal of the Penny for Pinellas sales tax, from 2020-2030. Before the referendum vote, the Board of County Commissioners is seeking citizen input on the most important areas to invest future funds throughout the community. Members of the public are invited to give their “two cents” about the Penny at an open-house meeting from 6pm-8pm on Monday, March 20, at the Historic Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd. S., Gulfport or from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, March 29, at Pinellas County Extension, 12320 Ulmerton Road, in Largo. (There was also a meeting in Palm Harbor that occurred on March 15.) Since it was initially approved by voters, the Penny has helped build a better Pinellas by supporting projects aimed at areas that matter most to citizens, including: improved roads and bridges, water quality and flood protection, public safety and environmental preservation. The Penny is shared between Pinellas County and its 24 cities to fund long-term, capital projects, such as roads, bridges, storm water projects, public safety equipment, fire stations, parks, land acquisition, public facilities and investments in courts and jails. Because Penny for Pinellas is a one-percent sales tax paid by everyone who spends money in the county, one-third is paid for by tourists and seasonal visitors. All collected Penny funds stay in Pinellas. The tax is not collected on groceries and medications; it is only collected on the first $5,000 of a single purchase. This tax has been in effect since 1990. To learn more about the Penny, including an interactive map of projects, visit www.pinellascounty.org/penny.

Shorebird Paper Lantern Procession On Saturday, April 1, you are invited to celebrate the beginning of the nesting season for local shorebirds by joining in a paper lantern procession in Pass-A-Grille. Learn about local shorebirds and how you can help protect these beautiful birds while you enjoy a relaxing evening at the beach. Beginning at 6pm, they will have fun activities for young and old alike, which highlight unique features of the shorebirds’ habitat and how they camouflage themselves to avoid predation. There will also be local environmental non-profit groups with displays and information about their wonderful work in helping to protect our environment. They will begin distributing paper lanterns at 7:45pm, and the lantern procession begins at 8pm. Lanterns are

FREE but donations are happily accepted. All donations will go to support an education scholarship fund which sends local educators to Audubon summer programs. Please note, participants will not be releasing the paper lanterns and will not be in an area with nesting shorebirds. In the unlikely event that shorebirds do decide to nest in the area, they will cancel the event. The birds come first! Event location is Paradise Grille, 900 Gulf Way, St. Pete Beach (Pass-A-Grille). Metered parking is available along the street. This event is sponsored by Florida Audubon and St. Petersburg Audubon Society. Questions? Please contact Andrea Leavitt Andersen at climatechange@stpeteaudubon.org.

Latin Music Festival by the Bay Gulfport City Limits, LLC. Is proud to present the first in a series of annual Latin Music Festivals, “Latin Music by the Bay” on April 8. The concert will be located on beautiful Boca Ciega Bay from 1pm until 9pm. The concert event will feature recording artist Orchestra Fuego, The Latin Jazz Knights, Freddy Montez, Victor J. Moreno with Esther Suarez, and Eddie Garrido. In precaution of our Florida weather, many people are waiting until the day of the event to purchase their tickets. We want to extend the same ticket price as the advance tickets to the day of the show. That will give everyone the same opportunity to enjoy the Latin Music Festival for $15.00 per ticket. The ticket prices are reduced for active military and first responders to thank these brave men and women for their service. Also, children under 10 are free. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the Michael J. Yakes Foundation to further enhancement the educational needs of children. The Michael J. Yakes Foundation will be present to speak to the attendees of the concert. The concert is dog friendly, (dog, cat, bird or whatever) but bring a leash. There will be food and drinks available all day for your enjoyment from several of Gulfport’s local

21 restaurants. There will also be a Cuban Cigar maker selling his wares from La Habana Cigar. And Richard Maurer, Massage Therapist will be set up for your relaxation. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and stay for a while. Waist bands will be issued to the attendees at the entrance and enable you to leave and re-enter the concert. While here, visit Gulfport’s fabulous restaurants and shops. We would like to thank all of our sponsors including the City of Gulfport, Saunders & Walker, P.A., Attorneys, Evander Preston, fine jewelry, Olympus Printing, Gibbs & Parnell, P.A., Attorneys, Salty’s Gulfport Bar, SIK Promotions, Soup to Nuts Media Marketing, The Dog Bar and the Michael J. Yakes Foundation to name a few. Tickets are $15.00 and available online at www.gulfportcitylimits.com, at Domain Home Accessories & Gallery at 3129 Beach Blvd. So., and BoTiki at 3015 Beach Blvd. So. Check the website to see which record / music stores will have tickets available as well. Or contact Michael G. Knettel at 727-686-1155 for more details.

Marine Science Summer Camps Does your child have an interest in marine science? Do they love going to the beach and finding animals? If so, this is their chance to learn more about it! Send them to Tampa Bay Watch this summer for some fun in the sun with their marine ecology summer camps. Now is the time to sign your kids up for the fun and educational summer camps offered at Tampa Bay Watch Marine and Education Center, located on Tierra Verde. Offered June through August, in week-long increments, they have Sea Monkeys Camp for ages 6-8 (half and full-day sessions) and Tampa Bay Discovery Camp for ages 9-14 (full days only). Both are a great opportunity for kids to get their feet wet and learn all about the inhabitants of the amazing estuary that is Tampa Bay. Campers will spend many days snorkeling in local waters off of the Tampa Bay Watch USCG inspected 32’ “classroom boat”, in search of local species, participating in hands-on labs to study the small alien-like plants and animals we call plankton, observing Bay life while kayaking over shallow seagrass beds, and collecting and studying the numerous Tampa Bay inhabitants with seine nets and otter trawl. (Kayaking is for Discovery Campers only, weather permitting.) For more information and to register now, please visit http://www.tampabaywatch.org/summer-camps.html.

Gulfport Art & Gallery Walk Saturday, March 18

Featuring Artist Lauri Zavala – Tillie’s Offbeat Bazaar On the third Saturday of each month, you can visit Beach Boulevard in Gulfport for the fun and fantastic Gulfport Art & Gallery Walk! The event features art from several different perspectives. There are paintings, sculptures, photographs and even fanciful art created from upcycled items. That’s only part of what is on exhibit. You can also find hand-crafted jewelry, self-designed and handmade clothing, accessories and bath & body products. There’s something for everyone! This week’s Adopt-An-Artist is Lauri Zavala, owner of Tillie’s Off-Beat Bazaar, who creates one-of-a-kind art and gifts with a fun, funky vibe. As a child, she and her grandmother, Tillie, spent hours creating art together and Tillie continues to be her muse today. She enjoys creating colorful offbeat art; finding “orphans” and giving them new purpose is her specialty. Many trips to Mexico, New Orleans and Thailand have left an impression on Lauri, not only fueling a passion for the deep history and culture, but also a fascination for the people. Artists like Frida Kahlo - one of her favorite inspirations – influenced Lauri’s use of bright colors, yet often a bit on the dark side. Whether it be furniture, wood scraps, or clay, her influence comes from the mystical energy she felt in those faraway places. She discovered that she has a special connection with Angel Cards and uses that gift to share their beauty and guidance. Because of this energy, each piece is crafted with spiritual and artistic imagination. “I truly love when one of my sweet pieces find a home! The excitement that my people express when they find their favorite is really what I love the most!” – Lauri Zavala When it comes to music, Art Walk’s got you covered. For your musical entertainment, live musicians appear at several venues throughout the waterfront district including Urban Gypsies, Double M Band and Pete n’ Me, just to name a few. On top of all of that, downtown Gulfport features many unique shops, boutiques and galleries with small town charm you will only find here. With over a dozen great restaurants, you are certain to find something that fits

your taste, and it’s all within walking distance of all the evening’s festivities. Don’t miss out on your chance to eat at one of the foremost dining destinations in the Tampa Bay Area. Admission and parking is complimentary, with courtesy trolley rides available from off-site parking areas. Gulfport events are pet and family friendly. Can’t wait to see you there! The event is located near the surrounding area of 3101 Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport. For more information regarding how local businesses and residents can get involved with Adopt an Artist at an upcoming Gulfport Art and Gallery Walk, email artistadoptions@gmail.com. Vendor information can be found at SIKpromotions.com. For general information, follow on Facebook www.facebook.com/GulfportArtWalk.

Gone Fishing capt. larry blue

When it comes to fishing, this is my favorite time of the year. Warming temperatures and longer days make the fish become much more active than they are during the cooler months of winter. Though we can hardly say it has been much of a cool winter; this is been one of the mildest winters that I can remember. A sure sign of spring is the appearance of the Spanish and king mackerel. The seasonal migration has begun and the schools of mackerel can be found just about anywhere offshore. Watch for the tell-tale sign of diving birds for an indication of where to begin your angling day, as the birds will be feeding on the baitfish that the mackerels chase to the surface. Both king and Spanish mackerel have sharp teeth and voracious appetites. The baitfish they feed on do their best to stay clear of them, but most often that isn’t enough. The mackerel will tear into a school of bait with ravenous force, giving the bait little chance of escape. From the beach you may even be able to see the Spanish mackerel feeding. They come very close to shore and some can even be caught by surf-casters and also from the area fishing piers. But the best results will be from one mile to three miles from the coast. King mackerel, on the other hand, usually prefer to be in deeper water—approximately six to 12 miles offshore. They can be caught closer, and some of the biggest kings can be surprisingly close to shore. Really big kingfish often feed on the Spanish mackerel in surprisingly shallow water. The best fishing for the mackerel species is in the early morning hours until about mid-morning. The bite tapers off from about 10am until around 3pm, when fishing picks up again and continues until just before dark. Bottom fishing for grouper and snapper also picks up with the changes in the weather and temperatures. The surface water warms with each day of bright sun and the heat radiates down to warm the fish and their appetites. Locals love to fish for grouper and this is one of the best tasting fish we have. Blackened, fried, grilled, or bathed in a beer batter, just thinking about it makes me hungry. While grouper and snapper are a diner’s delight, they are quite a challenge for anglers to catch. It seems that grouper know when to strike a bait—that often happens when the angler isn’t ready! Even if the angler is paying attention, he better be prepared to earn his prize. They don’t get big by being stupid, so you’d better eat your Wheaties if you want to tangle with this fish. Talking with Capt. Bill Fehl on backwater fishing; Bill said that he is expecting the black drum to show up any day now. Last year most of the drum weighed anywhere from 22 up to 60 pounds and an average fish was around 35 pounds. The drum can be caught on jigs of various colors depending on the available ambient light and water quality. Mackerel and pompano are taking baits and lures

around the flats; the best time was during the incoming tide. Bill also said that snook and redfish have taken a backseat to the speckled trout because of the outstanding action on the flats. Return of Movies in the Park

Movies in the Park, presented by St. Petersburg Preservation (SPP), returns in May. In the meantime, join them for a fun Movie Announcement Party on Thursday, April 6, starting at 6pm. Be among the first to learn which movies will be showing on the big outdoor screen and what bands will be playing. The party takes place in the courtyard at downtown St. Pete’s The Ale & The Witch (111 2nd Ave. NE). SPP will have prizes for the first to guess the correct titles based on movie trivia questions as hints. The new movie poster and movie poster note cards will be available for a special price. Choose from the usual great selection of American craft beers at The Ale & The Witch, as a portion of the beer sales will go to SPP. Best of all, the party is FREE! May Movies in the Park will occur each Thursday evening during the month of May (4, 11, 18, 25) in beautiful waterfront North Straub Park. As a special bonus, Movies in the Park is coming to Midtown! Movies at Midtown will take place in the beautiful garden area at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum on April 27. For all movie nights, live music starts at 7pm and the movie starts at dusk. You are encouraged to come early to get a good spot and enjoy the music and the waterfront view before the movie begins. At Movies in the Park, you may purchase food and drink from onsite vendors, or bring your own picnic. Bring a blanket or low seat (some folding chairs available). Secure onsite bicycle valet parking will be available from Coast Bike Share (or pick up a Coast Share bike and drop it off at a convenient bike share station, one is adjacent to North Straub Park and the Carter Woodson Museum). The Getaway marks the Grammy Award-winning band’s seventh top ten album and third Number Two on the Top 200 Chart. The album debuted at Number One in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, and New Zealand and at Number Two in the United Kingdom and Germany. U2 Joshua Tree Tour Coming to Raymond James U2 is bringing the upcoming 30th anniversary tour of their blockbuster album The Joshua Tree to Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium on Wednesday, June 14, with opening band OneRepublic. Tickets are on sale now online at various ticket outlets. The Joshua Tree sold more than 25 million copies and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1987; it still stands the test of time today as a great rock album. The album contains the hits With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and Bullet the Blue Sky. The band will perform the album in full, along with some other special songs. “Recently I listened back to The Joshua Tree for the first time in nearly 30 years,” Bono said in a statement on

the band’s website. “It’s quite an opera. A lot of emotions, which feel strangely current: love, loss, broken dreams, seeking oblivion, polarization…all the greats. I’ve sung some of these songs a lot…but never all of them. I’m up for it; if our audience is as excited as we are…it’s gonna be a great night.” The Edge said, “It seems like we have come full circle from when The Joshua Tree songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album—as these songs seem so relevant and prescient of these times too—we decided to do these shows; it feels right for now. We’re looking forward to it.” For more information please visit www.u2.com/news/title/the-joshua-tree-tour-2017/news/.
