January is named after Janus, the Roman god of doorways and of beginnings and endings. He is represented with a two sided head, one looking ahead and the other always looking behind. He symbolically represented that Rome was the first real civilization, looking back at those primitive cultures before them. Some Roman coins showed him with and without beards, even occasionally with four heads.

Buster Brown Bean Company co-owner and head chef, David Culver, will be cooking live on the CW23’s morning entertainment and news show, “Winging It, Buffalo Style! On WNLO” The segment will begin Monday, April 9 at 8 a.m. and run until 9 a.m. on CW23 (WNLO, Buffalo) Channel 10 in Fredonia and Channel 11 in Dunkirk. Culver will be introducing the upcoming change in the menu for the spring and summer seasons. He will start out the segment by preparing broiled salmon with white wine butter and fresh dill to add a burst of flavor. The dish will be served with a side of haricot vert green beans and toasted almond pilaf. Culver then plans to use the leftovers to make a salmon salad sandwich, an easy, light meal fit for the spring season! “Of all the more common seafood, salmon has always been my least favorite. I was recently inspired by a meal I cooked with my father, which changed my perception. Everything was fresh from the sea, which is easy for us because that is what we always do at the Bistro. We are currently developing our Spring & Summer entrees and salmon will be offered two ways, one you’ll see me do LIVE for WNLO on Monday, the other is blackened.” Buster Brown was established in November 2006 and the Bistro has been open since May 11, 2011. It is located at 33 Chruch St., Fredonia, at the corner of Center Street. For more information concerning the event or recipes used during the cooking segment, visit our website at, http://busterbrownbean.com/ , or contact David Culver at 716-672-6622 or david@busterbrownbean.com for more details.

Benefit Payments Going Paperless In less than a year, all Social Security payments will be made electronically. Ninety percent of us who receive benefits already get them that way. The remaining 10 percent are being asked to make the change now and not wait until the last minute. The deadline is March 1, 2013, and applies to more than just Social Security. Veterans, railroad retirees, Social Security Income recipients and those who receive Office of Personnel Management benefits are included. It’s said that going paperless will save the government $1 billion over 10 years. We can choose how we’ll receive our money — either direct deposit to our existing bank account or a Direct Express debit card. So which should you pick? If you have a bank account, the money will be automatically deposited each month. If you don’t have a bank account, the money will appear each month on the Direct Express debit card. It can be used like a regular debit card, but you only

get one ATM withdrawal each period, and there can be fees for other services. You’ll also need to remember your Personal Identification Number (PIN) when you use the card. When you’re ready to make the switch to electronic payments, you can do it either online [www.GoDirect.org] or by phone at 1800-333-1795. If you want to sign up for the debit card, you’ll need your Social Security number or claim number, 12-digit federal benefit-check number and the amount of your most recent federal benefit check. If you want direct deposit to your bank account, you’ll need your bank’s routing transit number (the numbers on your personal check), account number and type of account, either checking or saving. ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER Hi, I am Renee. My question is: First let me tell you I am so excited about both of your columns. Last week some one asked you about cusps and their Sun Sign. My question is similar: My birthdate is March 21, (year of birth withheld for privacy) - time: 10:09 a.m. Would you please tell me my sun sign? Renee - Brocton.

Utilizing your full Birth information your natal (birth) sun sign is Aries on the cusp of Pisces Aries. As an F.Y.I.: If you had been born the previous year in the same month; on the same day; and at the same time you would have been a Pisces on the Pisces - Aries Cusp. Your Moon sign is Cancer. The Natal Sun sign represents one’s Ego. Our Natal Moon Sign represents our subconscious- who we are internally. In your case with your sun in Aries you may come across from your mind and your intellect. Your Moon sign deals with matters of the heart; passion; nurturing; and care giving. You may find yourself in conflict at times because of this. At the Higher Side of these qualities- you are able to see both sides more clearly and blend the two. You Natal Sun is a Fire Sign and Your Natal Moon is a Water sign. One last reminder: Fire makes water boil and/or steam and water puts fire out. ~~~~

My son is currently starting his own business. What do you see for him? J. from Arkwright The first thing I see is your son is highly motivated and personally skilled in the area of his intended business. You and his mother might consider relaxing a bit. I see he has already attended a college and received either a two or four year degree. I see the three of you discussing monies; all three present; and then one on one with either you or his mother. He seems to be putting the idea forth to both of you that a business can begin with out a large sum of money. I see in the past he has paid attention to both of your spending habits; you each have done well with starting with little to no money. I feel he is capable of doing the same. This adds to a promising foundation for his business. I see the doors to Higher Education still open for him and his continuing with his studies to strengthen the skills he already has for his business. He has expressed this as a part of his continued intent on several occasions to both you and his mother. He is also experienced mathematically which adds to his strength and abilities. His “burning desire” to make this business a success will be an asset to its realization. For Entertainment Purposes Only. The Sprint Cup season is only five races old, but Clint Bowyer has gone a long way toward eliminating the uncertainty that clouded his career during the off-season. Bowyer, 32, made his name at Richard Childress Racing, where he won five races since joining the Cup ranks full-time in 2006. Twice he won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, in 2007 and 2010, and at Talladega Superspeedway, in 2010 and 2011. He also won at Richmond, in 2008. Late in 2011, Bowyer found that, due to sponsorship issues, there was no place for him at RCR. The Emporia, Kan., native considered several offers and decided to move to Michael Waltrip Racing, where his No. 15 Toyota is sponsored by 5-Hour Energy Drink. Waltrip’s team has won only twice since its inception in 2007. RCR has won 100 Cup races, dating back to 1983.

The platypus is one of only five mammals that lay eggs (the others are all species of echidnas, which look like a halfway between anteaters and hedgehogs). It is also one of the few venomous mammals - the male platypus has a spine on its back foot. There is no official plural of platypus in English - scientists variously use “platypuses or “platypus. “Platypi is often used conversationally, but this is pseudo-Latin - the Greek would actually be “platypodes.

to ancient times, as it was believed that mineral water could cure various diseases. In the 1770s, scientists found ways to replicate naturally carbonated mineral waters, and it soon became commercially available. The artificial mineral water was often called “soda water”, and soda fountains quickly spread in the United States. Herbs and chemicals were soon added for flavor, such as birch bark, dandelion, sarsaparilla, and fruit extracts. Due to difficulties in the glass industry at the time, most soft drinks were consumed on-site, and pharmacies with soda fountains gained a prominent place in American culture. Over 1,500 patents were filed for various methods of capping bottles of carbonated beverages, and it wasn’t until 1892 that a successful version was found - the “Crown Cork Bottle Seal”. In 1899, a glass-blowing machine was patented, that was able to produce glass bottles without the need for hand-blowing them.

Consider looking within during current transits when making outer changes- from the First through the Fourteenth with your ruling planet Retrograde through late night on the thirteenth. You may choose to look at finances this week for future expenditures. Transits at weeks end indicate spending time with those who support and share interests within the same areas which you do. Sensitivity is indicated.

TAURUS Current transits within the second week indicate a time - let your view points be known with self responsibility and sensitivity to those you disclose them to. MOON CHILD Slowly take action now with Mercury having gone direct. The Eighth can find you in the lime light of personal and Romantic relationships. Single Cancerians could find the start of life long romance now. Moon Children already in a relationship may need to make certain their passion is directed toward their life partner. The Thirteenth and Fourteenth opens door to your career and/or business under current transits. Self responsibility is indicated on theses dates as well.

LEO April’s second week indicates becoming involved in new classes. Interacting in small groups can bring old and new ideas into the light allowing you to understand and utilize them more efficiently and effectively. VIRGO April’s second week’s transits with the illumination from the Full Moon from the Sixth shines brightly and starting to put a goal list into action. Your shared Ruling Planet (Mercury) now Direct gives you prowess within all areas of communication when utilized with self responsibility and consideration toward others. You and yours may consider spending time with someone whose way of thinking and opinions are respected by each of you.

LIBRA April’s second week may require making use of inner guidance- as well as paper and pen for writing down all pros and cons for making a self responsible realization. You may need to utilize this by this week’s last two days under current transits. Planetary transits indicate a need to bring your wardrobe up to date utilizing self responsibility from within your current financial ability. This includes Libra men as well as women.

SCORPIO Libra Full Moon on the sixth continues to shed light on your social sector on April Eighth. The second week could find you dealing with someone’s) who may be less than forthright and with a less than favorable character. Utilize knowledge gained over the past six to eight weeks; self responsible communication and action; along with energies around you from current planetary transits for a favorable outcome.

Add asparagus and 1/2 teaspoon salt; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to medium-high and cook, uncovered, until barely tender, 5 to 10 minutes (depending on the thickness of asparagus); drain. Most people use the majority of their energy between breakfast and dinner, so lunch is necessary to be productive and energetic. Dramatic calorie highs and lows aren’t good for anyone, especially those with diabetes and dietrelated illnesses. Researchers at the University of Georgia studied the eating patterns of athletes. Their study determined that men and woman showed higher levels of body fat if they had irregular eating patterns throughout the day, even if they were in energy balance by the end of the day. In addition, compared with athletes who ate consistently through the day (breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner), irregular eaters had worse muscle mass, lower energy levels and poor mental focus. These studies prove that when it comes to lunch, you are what you eat. Good sources of protein, whole grains, vegetables and fruits will help you be more focused, productive and energetic throughout the rest of the day. The beauty of this recipe for Microwave Salmon with Mushroom, Apple and Endive Salad is

that it can be quickly prepared for dinner as a warm dish and easily packed for lunch and eaten cold.

or wet inside; cut in thickest part to test. Cover and set aside. 3. Place mushrooms, remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper, and remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons oil in a 3-quart microwave-safe casserole. Cover; microwave on HIGH (100 percent) for 4 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. 4. Add any remaining seasoned oil mixture to the cooked mushrooms to make a dressing. Stir in the endive, mixing lightly to coat greens evenly. Spoon endive and mushroom mixture onto 4 individual plates. Top each with the apple slices sprinkled with lemon juice, and a serving of salmon steak. Serves 4.

Olive oil infused with sage and thyme perfectly accents the moist salmon steaks and the sharpness of the endive.

LARGEST GLACIERS BY CONTINENT North America – Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. Hubbard has also been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska ever since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895 (Davidson, 1903). And, this is happening despite climate change and the fact that many glaciers are thinning and retreating.

South America – Perito Moreno Glacier

90% of the world’s glaciers in Antarctica and Patagonia at the southern tip of South America are melting quickly. Argentina’s mighty Perito Moreno glacier is thriving in defiance of the global climate change. University of Alaska Fairbanks experts say the area’s heavy precipitation seems to have increased. This combined with strong, cold Patagonian winds has reinforced the glacier.

Europe – Vatnajokull Glacier

The Vatnajokull covers about 8% of Iceland with and average thickness of 400meter. Beneath the glacier are active volcanoes. Grimsvoth Volcano is Iceland’s most active – latest eruptions in 1996, 1998, 2004.

Africa – Glaciers of Kilimanjaro

These glaciers may not be the biggest on the continent but they are definitely on the highest mountain of the continent. They were also the center of much global warming alarmist hype until it was proven that retreat and advance of glaciers is not caused by climate change as much as it is caused by overall changes in precipitation.

Asia – Siachen Glacier

Siachen glacier is the highest battleground on earth. It is a place where India and Pakistan always meet in a frozen standoff. It is the world’s largest non polar glacier, Siachen glacier is sometimes called third pole. This glacier is well known for its scarce population and treacherous climatic conditions. Siachin boasts more than 2 trillion cubic feet of ice, and within 25 kms has 45 peaks which rise up to a height of 18000 feet.

Australia – Heard Island Glacier

Australia’s little know glaciers sit in sub-Antarctic Heard Island in the Indian Ocean. The area was discovered by U.S. Captain William Heard in 1853. Scientists call the area an ideal laboratory for studying climate change – at the end of the Polar Zone and isolated from humans.

Antarctica – Lambert Glacier

Lambert along with Mellor and Fisher glaciers, which form the upper extension of the Lambert, the ice mass have been measured at 320 mi. long and over 40 mi. wide. “The Lambert drains into the massive Amery Ice Shelf at longitude 70 deg. E, almost due south of Bombay and approximately 1,400 mi. from the South Pole.

HOLLYWOOD — Seventy-year-old Barbra Streisand will produce and star as Mama Rose, mother of striptease legend Gypsy Rose Lee, in a big-screen remake of “Gypsy.” Streisand has hungered to play Mama Rose, long considered to be the best female role in musical theater, ever. In l959, Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoirs, excerpted in “Harper’s Magazine,” prompted producer David Merrick to option the story for Broadway legend Ethel Merman. Arthur Laurents, who wrote “West Side Story,” was hired to write the libretto. Ironically, Merman didn’t win a Tony Award for her stunning performance. “Gypsy” has been revived four times on Broadway. Angela Lansbury won a Tony Award (l974), Tyne Daly won a Tony (l990) and Patti LaPone won a Tony (2008) for their Mama Rose. However, Bernadette Peters’ Mama Rose (2003), which was considered the first to break the Merman mold, didn’t earn her a Tony. Before he died last May, Laurents, who directed Streisand in her first show, “I Can Get It for You Wholesale,” gave her his blessing

to remake “Gypsy,” hoping she’d get right the things he disliked about the 1962 Rosaland Russell film, made by Warner Brothers. Russell didn’t do her own

Barbra Streisand in “Hello Dolly” singing, but was so good as Mama Rose that nobody cared, and with the star power of Natalie Wood, the film was a great success. In l993, Bette Midler won a Golden Globe for her Mama Rose in a CBS TV movie, available on DVD. When Streisand played Dolly Levi in the big screen “Hello Dolly” (1969), only her second film, critics complained she was too young for the role and did a bad Mae West impression. She’ll soon be seen in “The Guilt Trip” with Seth Rogan, set

for a Nov. 2 release. Streisand has acquired so much knowledge as an actress and director; she will undoubtedly give the greatest performance of her career as Mama Rose. Remember, you heard it here first! *** Oscar winner and “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg is spreading her wings. Last year she produced “Sister Act” in London and New York, and now plans to produce a documentary about Moms Mabley. For many years, Whoopi talked about Moms Mabley in her nightclub acts and has joined forces with “Laugh-In” producer George Schlatter and Tom Leonardis to bring “I Got Something to Tell You” (one of Mabley’s catch phrases) to the screen. As the garlic cloves and chickpeas blend together, questions may abound, starting with, “What is the Middle East in the middle of? That’s where your maps come into the mix. In the Middle East and here, hummus is a snack or side dish. It is often served with pita bread, the kind with a little pocket inside.
