Start by making a scaled plan of your entire property on a quad-ruled sheet of paper, adding existing elements such as the back door, the windows, the side entrance, fences, trees, rocks, etc. Now is the time to decide what you want to include in the landscape design, as well as the space required for each element. You could incorporate a children’s play area, a garden shed, a utility area, a terrace, an area for adult activities which could include a hot tub, a vegetable garden and flower beds. Some items may have to be eliminated from the list depending on your priorities and the available space.
Exterior lighting can be divided into three categories: • Functional, to light the front door, steps, garage, shed, etc.; • Security, to discourage unwelcome visitors; • Decorative, to highlight a sculpture or shrub. The two most popular lamps available on the market today are the little solar lamps that are a favourite for many because they are so reasonably priced, and the low voltage (12 volts) lighting that is connected to the home’s electrical system. The choice is very personal and can very well do the job.
Outdoor lighting is a question of balance and playing with the contrast between light and shadow.
Be careful about the intensity of any lights destined for decorative purposes. The idea is to create a soft, nocturnal atmosphere not to recreate daylight.
When highlighting plants and objects, it’s preferable if the source of light is invisible. Moreover, installing a timer on any outdoor lights helps to save energy.
On another quad-ruled sheet, sketch the different areas you have decided to include, cut them out and place them on your original plan. By modifying the layout and, if necessary, the shape of the different zones, you’ll find the ideal site for each element. For example, by installing the shed in one of the corners of the yard, it will take up less space. Design each area as efficiently as possible. For example, a utility area for the clothes line, garbage cans, woodpile, etc., could be covered with gravel or paving stones which require minimal maintenance. The open lawn in the centre of the backyard should be big enough for all your outdoor activities. If there isn’t much room left for plants, you could always integrate them into existing structures. Hanging plants and flower boxes will put the finishing touch of colour to your landscape design.
