While I generally appreciate the work the SkyTrain security and police do to keep us safe in our travels, I feel the need to highlight the importance of hiring people suitable to this kind of work. Last week, I boarded an eastbound train at Metrotown, and at the same time, a young woman boarded the train and began approaching people, saying she was hungry, and asking for money. Just before the doors closed, a SkyTrain police officer hopped onto the train. He immediately began yelling at the woman— words to the effect of, “haven’t we told you before you can’t do this? You don’t listen, that’s why you have to go to court and talk to a judge. You don’t get it, do you?” The officer had a demeaning tone, which was completely unnecessary, as she ceased the behaviour immediately when he started yelling at her. It was obvious that the woman had some kind of special

needs, which made the officer’s behaviour even more reprehensible. Further, it was unprofessional to violate the young woman’s privacy by disclosing her legal issues. As the officer had told the woman she was getting “kicked off” the train at the next stop, I quietly took him aside and spoke to him, advising that it would be better for everyone present if he would behave in a respectful manner towards people on the SkyTrain. At that point, the officer continued in a loud voice that he was “tired of dealing with her crap” or words to that effect. I was even more shocked at this unprofessionalism, and asked the officer to identify himself. He did not show me ID, and only stated a series of letters and numbers. I have since written TransLink asking them to address the incident, but doubt it will be resolved. I believe it is important for us to stand up when we see

this type of behaviour by others, especially those—such as this officer—who are in a position of authority. Beverly Bouma New Westminster

Help needed I am helping a person in England obtain details about a relative, pre-1958 in Burnaby and New Westminster. Emily Jane Salter (nee Watt) passed away June 12, 1958 at Royal Columbian Hospital. She apparently lived at 477 13th Ave., Burnaby, survived by two sons John and William, six grandchildren. Interment was at Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster. Emily married Walter Salter in England in 1903 and they emigrated to Canada. Walter was killed in action during the First World War. Why we should reject the HST As the referendum on the HST nears, I took some time to really think about all the pros and cons. Since the beginning, I was of the opinion that, had the HST been 10 per cent it would would have been acceptable, and I still think that it would have worked for most British Columbians. However, in principle I’m having a problem trying to justify the undemocratic way that it was introduced/ pushed upon us. We, the taxpayers of B.C., finally stood up and made our voices be heard. We stood up and said no, we told our politicians in power enough is enough and so now, for the principle of it, we should reject it regardless of any changes. Frank Di Cesare Burnaby

CREA updates housing forecast. Strong activity in British Columbia in first quarter. The Canadian Real Estate Association has revised its predictions for 2011 and 2012 home sales activity. National home sales activity is now expected to reach 441,100 units this year, a slight decline of 1.3 per cent from 2010. However, this is revised from an earlier forecast of 1.6 per cent. This is due to stronger-than-anticipated activity in British Columbia in the first four months of the year. In 2012, the CREA predicts that national sales activity will rebound by 2.6 per cent, to 452,500 units. This is in line with the 10-year average for annual activity. “Home buyers expect mortgage interest rates to rise and are mindful of their current and future debt levels,” says CREA President Gary Morse. “They’re doing their homework

to better understand how their mortgage payments and family budget might change down the road before they make an offer.” However, Morse says that though mortgage rates have increased recently, they are still keeping financing within reach for many prospective homeowners. “Some housing markets are hotter than others, so buyers and sellers would do well to consult their local Realtor to understand how supply, demand and prices are evolving in their housing market,” he says. One such hot housing market is Greater Vancouver, where multi-million-dollar property sales have surged. These sales have skewed average sales prices for B.C. and nationally, which has prompted the average price forecast to be revised higher.
