The most obvious compositional difference between the two works is the hand of figure on the right, which is shown to be pointing in the Paris version. There are various theories as to why da Vinci painted two versions of the picture. The most widely accepted theory is that Leonardo fell out with his sponsors over how much he should be paid for the work. He may have begun a second version of the painting to give to the commissioners, selling the first on elsewhere. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/art-news/8666224/Leonardo-da-Vincis-Virgin-ofthe-Rocks-paintings-united-for-first-time.html

Leonardo Da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks – more to Mary than meets the eye? Leonardo da Vinci was once accused of being a heretic [pagan]. And does The Virgin of the Rocks hint that Jesus's conception was less than immaculate?
