ENGLISH FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING We teach English to more than 500,000 students in our teaching centres worldwide. Over 10 million learners of English use our free online resources.

OUR METHODOLOGY

WELCOME TO THE BRITISH COUNCIL 2

We use the latest UK published materials to stimulate creativity and imagination, and to develop critical thinking skills. Each class provides language input and opportunities for children to develop their English through real communication tasks. Songs, games and literature maximise enjoyment and increase cultural awareness. The aim is to develop confidence, communication skills, and knowledge of the world in a safe, creative and supportive environment.

PRIMARY COURSES These courses are for children in grades 2 – 5 and are designed to develop confidence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They stimulate and motivate children through enjoyable activities and real-life English. We aim for every child to communicate clearly, confidently, and accurately in English. All primary courses contain elements of UK National Curriculum materials (Key Stages 1 and 2).

YOUNG LEARNER COURSES PORTFOLIO MEASURING PROGRESS We evaluate student’s progress through continuous assessment. At the end of each module or unit of work students complete a written or spoken assessment task, and they reflect on their performance. Grammar and vocabulary are also assessed through regular ‘mini-checks’. The results of all assessments are kept in students’ folders. The teacher will give you feedback on progress in a mid-term and end of term report.

Students learn to speak, listen, read, and write with confidence and with correct grammar and pronunciation. We use up to date and realistic topics and situations to broaden world knowledge. We also emphasise study skills to help prepare for future international education.

GRADES 4 & 5

At the beginning of each module, students will receive a list of “Can do” statements for that module. These describe what students will learn to do in English during the course. Through the course tasks, students will have the opportunity to assess their own performance, with their teacher’s guidance. Teachers will assess students’ progress overall throughout the course, based upon their use of English during the formal tasks, and in two writing assessments.
